ne of the first things I do when a patient comes to the clinic for a hearing evaluation for the first time, is complete a thorough medical history. Over the years, I’ve noticed a surprising number of people report sleep apnea – enough that I decided it was worth looking into. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleeprelated breathing disorder and is characterized by repetitive episodes of complete or partial collapse of the upper airway during sleep. The muscles that support the so tissues in the throat temporarily relax, reducing or even closing the airway. The diaphragm and chest muscles must work harder to pull air into your lungs, resulting in loud snoring, snorting and gasping. Common symptoms of OSA are daytime sleepiness, waking with a sore throat, high blood pressure, and more recently, it’s been discovered that you can
Maximum support, airpermeable and extremely light weight. The patented "Delta Pad" design, a concealing foam cup exclusively designed by Anita, ensures strong support, a smooth outline and air circulation.

add hearing loss to the list. A 2022 European study of almost 7,000 older adults reported that people with sleep apnea are 21% more likely to have hearing impairment. Research suggests that intermi ent hypoxia (insufficient oxygen supply to body tissues) associated with OSA, leads to a long-term decline in hearing thresholds. Those with OSA may also be more likely to experience sudden sensorineural hearing loss and less likely to positively respond to prednisone treatment. Treatments for OSA may involve a device that uses positive pressure to keep your airway open while you sleep (CPAP), a mouthpiece to move our lower jaw forward, or in some cases, surgery. Consult your physician for your holistic, as well as your auditory health if you suspect you may have sleep apnea. Snoring has been measured at loudness levels up to 80 to 90 dB, so whether you’re the snorer or the person who sleeps next to a snorer for 8 hours a night, it’s a good idea to get your hearing tested! Ask The Dentist!
“The Gi of Christmas”
by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS
Déjà Vu All Over Again Q: I’m forty-four years old and I feel like my mouth is falling apart. All my life people have commented on my a ractive smile and while my front teeth seem okay, I’ve lost my two back lower le molars. They seemed to break down, needed crowns, then root canals and then they just broke and had to come out. The dentist said there was nothing he could do because I was so hard on my teeth. I’m trying to protect my teeth with a night guard, but my lower right molars are starting to feel rough, like the ones I lost on the le side. I’m afraid they’ll break, then need crowns and on and on. I pointed this out to my dentist, and he said I just needed to wear my night guard more. I’m trying but I can’t wear it during the day because I’m in the public speaking to people all day and besides, I don’t think I grind at night – my husband says I sleep with my mouth open. That makes sense because my mouth is very dry when I wake up. My dentist sent me to a specialist for the extractions and he put some bone in the socket because I had a big abscess and needed bone to fill in the hole created by the abscess. It’s almost time I got implants to fi x up that lower le side, but I’m really concerned about what’s happening to teeth on the right side. Another question is what will happen to the teeth on the implants a er they’re in?
A: O en when the mouth and teeth look in generally good health, the mechanics and function that are being played out on the teeth are not scrutinized. This may be especially true when your front teeth look so good. However, the key to what is going on in the molar areas is most o en found in how the front teeth work against one another – in other words how the upper front teeth work against the lower front teeth. When front teeth are in the correct position, the back teeth do not grind or mortar and pestle one another. They don’t wear, crack, break or get loose. If you are experiencing wear and breakage on your molars your front teeth are not doing their job. Crowns can replace cracked and broken teeth, but they become subject to the same forces and sooner or later will fail – that goes for implant crowns as well. The analysis of your bite is simple in the hands of those who do comprehensive dentistry, and they can provide you with the answers you need.

By Brenda Pye ho doesn’t like to give and receive presents? A erall, gi giving is synonymous with Christmas. However, some of the best gi s cannot be bought online, wrapped, and slipped under the tree. These last few years have shown many of us that spending time with those we care about is the very essence of Christmas, and is the inspiration for this years’ show, The Gi of Christmas. Artistic Director Lena Palermo has carefully selected music from the past and present, including traditional ensembles, classic ballads, pop rock hits, jazz, R&B classics, and contemporary Christmas music hits that celebrate the spirit of giving. You will experience the powerful harmonies of a 63 mixed voice choir, as well as solos, and duets. We will entertain you with singing, dancing, sing-alongs, humour, and so much more. It’s a fast-paced show that will
