After his release, a miracle that he survived, he fought with the Polish 2nd Corps during the Italian Campaign and received “The Cross of Monte Cassino”. On the top of Monte Cassino which was captured by these brave, honourable men, a Polish flag was placed and these words were left behind for all of us to remember these Polish soldiers by. “For our Freedom and Yours, We Polish Soldiers have given our Souls to God, Our bodies to the soil of Italy and our Hearts to Poland”. My father fought in 11 Battles during this campaign. My father is our hero, my father was an honourable gentleman, brave and loyal to all that knew him. He loved his family with all his heart and gave all for his family. He never asked anything in return, just wanting to see us happy and smiling and that was his reward. The Story of my Mother’s and Father’s life will never fade from our hearts or memory. We will honour both of you always. Love forever Marco, Aurora, Steve, family and friends

Frank R. Caldwell Royal Canadian Navy WWII Veteran

At 17, my best friend & I joined as Signalmen. We served on the HMCS Barrie, & later the Eastview. We crossed the Atlantic from Halifax to New York to Boston to England/Ireland, escorting merchant ship convoys. We endured many storms, 30-40 foot waves; our ship rolled so far on its side we could almost touch the water from the bridge. We slept in hammocks, and many of us got sick but we quickly adjusted. We lost 8 merchant ships in 24 hrs to a submarine attack off Ireland, & believe we sunk one due to debris floating to the surface; we were not allowed to stop to pick up any survivors. I spent time in New York enjoying Broadway theatre, The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, dancing to Benny Goodman, Les Paul, etc. We felt relief & remained stoic when we learned the war was over. I then signed up to serve in the Pacific Theatre but by the time I arrived to the west coast, that war was over. I reminisce of my experiences & comrades, & how those years shaped my life. Recently, at 97, I met & was thanked for my service by Canada’s Prime Minister, a deeply meaningful life moment for me.

Gunner Pte. Peter Frederick Francis

7th Medium Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery Peter was a much beloved son, father, husband, grandfather and friend. The Regiment fought its way through France and Belgium, ending with the liberation of Holland. He was a proud Canadian and represented his country honourably. His love and kindness blessed us all.

When I was age two, prior to his death, my Dad wrote me a letter. He explained: “I went to war Brian, so that you would hopefully never have to.” Dad also suggested my responsibilities in life, if he did not return; words that have guided me for 78 years. Freda Mary Hoffman-Copas

Born in Ashford, Middlesex, England in 1923, Freda flew Barrage Balloons during WWII’s London Blitz. At 17 1/2 while working at an airplane factory war effort Freda joined the British Royal Airforce’s Barrage Balloon Battalion. This brave young woman with others, protected London homes, factories and Buckingham Palace with some 500 balloons harnessed to thick cable +-5,000ft above cloudsstopping enemy dive bombers. Freda spoke of blackouts and the heavy casualties of war, but also the fun of escaping through barbed-wire to dances. Freda, an only child, became a War Bride by marrying a Royal Canadian Army soldier. The RMS Queen Mary’s seven-day-voyage took her and her two babies to Halifax’s Pier 21 then taking the War Bride Train across Canada to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Freda’s life was hard and sacrificed for her 12 children.

In Flanders Fields

BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
