DECK THE HALLS – AND THE KITCHEN AND THE KIDS’ TOY BOXES – WITH GIFTS FROM LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESSES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. Shopping locally helps gift-givers find treats off the beaten path, as well as unique items created by artists and makers right in our own backyard. Looking for skincare and beauty products handmade by local artisans? Stunning jewelry created by a local designer? Look no further than the Tampa Bay area’s bustling shops and boutiques. You’ll also find plenty of big-name and designer brands. Of course, shopping locally isn’t only about finding cool treats for loved ones; it’s also about keeping our area vibrant. That’s the idea behind this weekend’s exciting Small Business Saturday, which you’ll read about in these pages. When you think outside the big-box and spend money with a small business, you help your community thrive both economically and socially. Shopping locally keeps our money here at home, and that in turn helps create and sustain jobs here. It also helps to grow the homegrown businesses that help make our cities so distinct and appealing.
You’ll see it shine in joyful holiday events — everything from choral performances to festive boat parades — all season long. We’ll begin, as we do every year, by sharing thoughts of gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. We’ll also honor the eight wondrous days of Hanukkah from Dec. 13-20, revel in the magic of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and celebrate the beauty of Kwanzaa from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. It all takes thoughtful preparation, and our yuletide guide is here to help. In addition to creative gift ideas, you’ll find a calendar of special holiday events, information about local holiday markets, and suggestions about how to give back to your community in the form of volunteer opportunities and charitable donations. Here’s hoping this holiday season is a magical time for you and your loved ones.
But this special Holiday Gift Guide is about more than simply shopping. Sure, we in the Tampa Bay area don’t experience the same chilly weather you’d find at the North Pole, but our holiday spirit can’t be matched.

Make the small businesses merry Local merchants get their due on Small Business Saturday (the day after Black Friday), with festivals, specials and various promotions. By Ester Venouziou, Times correspondent Armed with “shop small” bags, stickers and other swag, local businesses are preparing for what they hope will be a record-breaking Small Business Saturday. The event, created by American Express in 2010, takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving and encourages consumers to shop local. “We typically do twice as well on Small Biz Saturday as we do on a regular Saturday,” says Desiree Noisette, owner of Cerulean Blu in St. Petersburg. To further entice shoppers to keep their money local, businesses are planning sales, giveaways and various promotions, so swing by your favorite shops and restaurants and see what they have going on. Hundreds of local artists and businesses are also participating in Small Business Saturday festivals and holiday markets, where you’ll find gifts for everyone on your list. Here are some to check out. Admission is free, unless otherwise noted. Thanksgiving Art & Craft Show, Tarpon Springs, features new and established artists and crafts vendors, food and drinks, and entertainment. A high-tech holiday From personal robots to drones to the voice of Alexa, the child in all of us will find this year’s high-tech offerings practical, educational, and entertaining. By Diane M. Craig, Times correspondent
Cocktail Smokers
Virtual Realty Headsets
Variety.com predicted early in the year that global sales of virtual reality devices could reach $7 billion in 2017. Some of those sales no doubt include VR headsets that put the wearer in the middle of the action. You can virtually tour museums, interact with Google Street View or play games like Bethesda Gaming Studio’s Fallout 4. Look for headsets that pair with consoles and PCs, and more affordable headsets that bring high definition to our smartphones. Some examples include a cardboard mobile headset from Insignia ($5, pictured) and the serious gaming set Vive VR system ($600) for a “fully immersive first-person VR experience.”
Shaken, stirred or ... smoked? A new generation of happy hour enthusiasts is fueling the trend of smoked cocktails. Think barbecue in a glass. Take your bloody mary or margarita to the next level with smoked jalapeños, or add the warm smell of mesquite to your next Manhattan. Look for handheld smokers like the GSM160, Gourmia’s hand-held, battery-operated smoker for under $30; the Breville Smoking Gun at just under $100; or the Crafthouse by Fortessa Smoking Box (pictured, $250) to add a smoky flavor to your holiday party.
DIY Robots
Give your children the future with a robot they can build themselves. By assembling a variety of working robots ($9.99 and up), young minds will learn about renewable energy and engineering principles. One popular model is the 14-in-One Educational Solar Robot Kit (pictured) with two levels of activity: One includes a Turtle-bot, Beetle-bot and Dog-bot; the second lets them build an Auto-bot, Surf-bot and Zombie-bot ($49.95 from several online retailers). And don’t worry about batteries — they all run on solar power! See High Tech pg. 12

Alexa and Her Pals
Personal assistants are part of our lives. Electronic sidekicks track our steps, keep our lists, and queue our music. Virtual assistant (VA) phone apps have directed us to our destinations, reserved hotels, made dinner reservations and called family members. Mobile device options include Apple’s Siri, Google’s Assistant, Microsoft’s Cortana and the newest contender, Samsung’s Bixby. As of this writing, Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dot are the only stand-alone VAs that operate independently of a computer or mobile device. Echo Dot (pictured) starts at $49.99; the Echo at $99. But will it help find your glasses?
Eyes in the Sky The last few years have seen the recreational drone market soar. With or without cameras, fully assembled or not, a drone is the height of a high-tech gift. Options could include easy-to-fly quadcopters for beginners or highly maneuverable drones with 3D-sensing cameras that recognize human faces and human movements. Expect to pay over $100 for a basic beginner model, or $400-$600 for more sophisticated models like the DJI Spark Quadcopter (pictured). A tip: Check the local guidelines for flying even the most lightweight drones at knowbeforeyoufly.org.

Pets as Gifts:
Beyond Cuteness There’s more to consider than the “awww” factor in giving a pet for Christmas. Make sure the situation is right; in fact, ask.
By Tom Wuckovich, Times correspondent As the holidays approach, it’s time to start thinking about gift ideas. Pets can be a tempting choice, but only if the recipient is ready to accept this living, breathing addition to the household. A few years ago, my daughter’s then-boyfriend asked me if he could give her a puppy for Christmas. I hesitated, because she was a busy 16-year-old and I didn’t think she was ready for pet ownership. After much thought — and realizing I would end up being the pup’s primary owner — I told him no. Still, on Christmas, she came home from his house beaming, with a small, cuddly, tan dachshund. I now had an unwanted gift that I certainly couldn’t re-gift.
Perfect gift for any golfer. (Or yourself.) Give the gift of the Most Colorful PGA TOUR® Tournament in the World, the Valspar Championship Holiday Pack! The Holiday Pack includes: Two (2) Select-A-Day tickets with access to the Michelob ULTRA 19th Hole, the Copperhead Clubhouse and the grounds. A Red Lot parking pass on the same day as the tickets. $25 in Hadwin Dollars that are good at Levy Prom Catering concession stands and the merchandise tent. Order before 3 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 19th, to ensure delivery before Christmas and guarantee that the special golf fan in your life has the best holiday ever! For tickets, visit ValsparChampionship.com or call 727-942-5566

I had three uncomfortable choices: Find where he bought the dog and try to return it; take it to a shelter and hope that it would be adopted, or let my daughter keep it. I knew my daughter would make a strong argument for keeping the dog. But was she — or I — ready to commit time, energy, and money to a pet we hadn’t planned on? That’s a good reason why you should ask the receiver in advance, instead of asking relatives or friends, and respect their decision. A surprise might be more fun, but it could have dire consequences in the long run. Sherry Silk, CEO of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, recommends instead of adopting a pet for someone, buying a gift certificate and letting the recipient come in and choose a pet. The certificates are good for a year. And if the pet is still not a good fit? “If after a few days or weeks, they find that the pet is really not for them, they can bring it back,” she says. “We are always open to that because we can also learn more about the pet’s habits and can make a better match the next time.” A pet is a gift that keeps on giving, in more ways than one. It’s something I realized after keeping the dachshund for 15 years — long after my daughter left the nest!

Every year brings a hot new game, doll or thing that makes noise that kids just have to have. What will it be this year? By Tom Wuckovich, Times correspondent
No holiday season would be complete without a good toy story! Every year, as Christmas nears, gift-givers with kids on their shopping list look to get their hands on what’s being touted as the season’s hottest toy. What might be this year’s model?
According to Amazon, Walmart and Toys R Us, these little darlings are going to dominate the toy landscape. But watch out for Cozmo, a little programmable robot that works with iOS and Android devices.
Topping the list for 2017 are Fingerlings, interactive baby monkeys that latch onto your finger and respond to sound, motion and touch by blinking their eyes, moving their head and making cute monkey sounds.
It’s still early in the season, and often a surprise toy suddenly shoots to the top. Here’s a look back at some of the toys that took the top spots in the past 10 Christmases.

You’ve made your list and checked it twice, and now it’s off to local shops around the Tampa Bay area. We’ve got you covered with more than 60 exciting holiday gift ideas for everyone on your list. From skateboards and home décor to beer growlers and dog toys, each item here can be found on local retailers’ shelves and websites.
Best Local Gifts for Kids
Find exciting books, dolls, toys, skateboards, and more at locally owned shops that cater to little ones.
Dolls help children develop their motor skills, imagination, and empathy – plus they’re loads of fun! Boy Story action dolls ($99) give kids ages 3-8 more choices when they play. The durable 18-inch plush and vinyl dolls, created by two sisters in Tampa, are available at Green Mommy Store, 8802 Rocky Creek Drive, #108, Tampa (greenmommystore.com). “They’re awesome and they make such a great gift,” says store owner Shannon Green.
For very little ones (and their new mommies), a small bottle of Happy Droolers teething gel by Organic Reverence ($10), a company based in Indian Rocks Beach, makes a great stocking stuffer. “It’s probably one of our most popular products,” Green says. “It’s made with clove oil. You rub it right on the teeth where they’re coming in and babies stop fussing. It’s amazing.”
Find more dolls and lots of other goodies at Church Street Shoppe, 14117 8th St., Dade City (352-523-2422), which specializes in popular and hardto-find kids’ toys, kites and more. Let your little one share in the wonder of the original Christmas story with The Little Christmas Angel book and its beautiful accompanying angel doll ($19.99). The book, by author Peggy Barons, was recently featured as one of Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford’s favorite things on the Today show.
You’ll find plenty of safe, eco-friendly toys for little ones at Growing Up, a children’s boutique at 689 Dr. Martin Luther King St. N, St. Petersburg (growingupstpete.com). For babies and early toddlers, teething Buddies by Buddie Toys ($19.99) are made of BPAfree silicone and designed to look like a sweet cartoonish character. “It’s a teething toy, but it’s really like a teething friend,” says Tara Gill, the store’s manager. For kids 3 and up, Plus-Plus brand building bricks ($6.99) come in one simple shape but allow for endless creativity. Create a flat mosaic or a 3-D sculpture with these colorful non-toxic bricks made in Denmark. There’s also a larger Plus-Plus Midi set ($12.99) available for kids 18 months and up.

Best Local Gifts for Kids
Both girls and boys love riding skateboards, says Jon Stine, owner and chief designer at Local Longboard Company in St. Petersburg (locallongboardcompany.com), who estimates about 40 percent of his customers are girls and women. “We’re seeing quite a few younger girls, age 8-10, who are wanting to get into it and they’re buying their boards for the first time,” says Stine, who closed his downtown shop in 2017 and currently creates and sells his boards from his custom furniture woodworking shop, Stine Custom Woodworks, 4790 Freemont Terrace S, St. Petersburg.
Also at Growing Up: Little readers (and future feminists) will enjoy the popular book Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls ($35) and its new sequel Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls Volume 2 ($35) by authors Francesca Cavallo and Elena Favilli. Each keepsake collection is designed to inspire young readers with short stories about 100 heroic women, from Queen Elizabeth I and Serena Williams to the brilliant African-American women at NASA who helped astronaut John Glenn become the first American to orbit Earth in 1962.
Longboards, which are longer than typical skateboards, have gained in popularity in recent years thanks to college students who use them to zip around campus, says Stine. “They’re great for transportation and for exercise, and you don’t need bike locks. You just pick it up and take it with you,” he says. The company typically has 75-100 boards for sale, and custom boards can be built. Prices range from $200 to $800, with $175 holiday specials on certain models.

Best Local Gifts for Women
Shopping for women who love natural products, festive kitchenware, and handcrafted jewelry? You’ll find an array of art galleries, specialty shops, and apothecaries right outside your door. Find fun gifts for everyone at Urban Burg Eclectic Home Décor & Gifts, 2253 Central Ave., #101, St. Petersburg, (727-231-5506), such as Unwined Candles ($19.75). Each delicious-smelling candle is handcrafted from soy wax in an attractive glass base made from a reused wine bottle. Does she love fresh flowers? Treat her to a Magnetic Vase ($10) so she can dress up the fridge with her favorite bloom. “They’re a great little gift item and they’re very popular,” says storeowner David Weston.
Ladies who love natural products will flip for a gift from Roots of the Sun, 17 21st St. N, St. Petersburg (rootsofthesun.com), an herbal apothecary shop that specializes in handcrafted products made of organic, sustainably harvested loose-leaf herbs. One of the shop’s most popular items, says the shop’s herbalist Rebecca Fox, is its Good Spirit Spray ($8.88), a refreshing body and room spray made of healing palo santo and frankincense soaked in vodka.
The Peace Tree Trading Post, 770 E. Jefferson St., Brooksville (peacetreetradingpost.com), is a cozy log cabin store specializing in handcrafted items created by Native American artists and craftspeople of the Southwest. A piece of beautiful Acoma pottery makes a beautiful gift. Look for a collection of spectacular white pieces adorned with a cutout in the shape of a bear claw ($60 per piece).
Another great stocking stuffer is the shop’s Mama Salve ($7.77), a fix-it-all topical balm that helps soothe cuts, scrapes, rashes and more. It’s safe for babies, kids, adults and animals. Shopping for a tea lover? Check out the store’s wall of blended herbal teas, or order a custom blend specially made from Fox’s favorite herbs.

Best Local Gifts for Women Stylish ladies would love the beautiful custom-designed jewelry by American artisans at Shapiro’s Gallery, 300 Beach Drive NE #112, St. Petersburg (shapirosgallery. com), such as Gulfport-based designer Ann Allen’s exquisite bracelets, necklaces and earrings handcrafted from sterling silver and semiprecious gemstones ($75 and up). What makes Allen’s fine line even more special is each piece contains an empowering secret message handwritten on its backside. For example, “Remember your power. Don’t give it away, is scrawled on the inside of one thick Wonder Woman-style silver bangle.
Anyone who loves cooking would appreciate a gift from Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium, 2080 Badlands Drive in Brandon (rollingpinonline.com). Owner Karen West says Nora Fleming serving pieces ($35-$60) and Nora Fleming Minis ($12) are popular gift ideas around the holidays. The classic-looking white ceramic serving pieces are crafted with a hole that allows hosts and hostesses to affix a decorative holiday-themed Mini ornament to them. The colorful Minis cover every season and occasion. “You could own just one platter or one candy dish, and then have twelve little decorative minis that you change out all year long, says West. “Whether the occasion is a birthday, Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July, anything, you just change your little Mini and your one dish or platter can be used for all the different holidays.
Also at Shapiro’s: Brightly colored industrial-looking handbags and totes by Hardwear By Renee ($85 and up). They’re perfect for fashionable women who don’t necessarily love fussy, feminine clutches. Handcrafted from marine vinyl, each features parts made from durable stainless steel, aircraft cable and wood. Find more gorgeous jewelry by artists from all over the U.S. at Craftsman House, 2955 Central Ave., St. Petersburg (craftsmanhousegallery.com), like the vibrant earrings, bracelets and necklaces by Anna Balkan Jewelry ($90 and up). Balkan’s colorful, chunky pieces are chock-full of gemstone clusters. “You definitely feel like you’re wearing a piece of art, says storeowner Jeff Schorr.

Best Local Gifts for Grandparents Let grandma and grandpa know you love them with a thoughtful gift from the following local shops and galleries. Grandma and grandpa love rich, aromatic espresso and now they can brew their own at home with a Bialetti Moka Express espresso maker ($26 to $59) from Casa Di Mazzaro, 3001 22nd Ave. N, St. Petersburg (casadimazzaro.com). Since 1933, Bialetti’s classic stovetop pot, with its iconic angular aluminum design, has made brewing the perfect cup of espresso in your own kitchen a hassle-free experience. Add an easy-to-use Capresso Froth Plus Automatic Milk Frother ($60) and they’ll soon be the most popular baristas on their block.
Does granddad the master griller need a new outdoor grill? The folks at Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply, 8351 State Road 54, Suite 107, New Port Richey (whiskeybentbbqsupply.com), specialize in top-quality smokers, grills, grilling accessories, rubs, sauces — everything you’d need for the ultimate barbecue. Traeger grills are hot sellers, running the gamut from the economical Tailgater portable grill ($450) to the top-ofthe-line Timberline 1300 ($1,999).
Art lovers who savor spending time outdoors will adore the garden art sculptures ($15-$230) at Clay & Paper Gallery of Art, 362 Main St., Dunedin (claypaper.com). Created by renowned Safety Harbor artists Kiaralinda and Todd Ramquist, the colorful sculptures are made of wire, found glass and recycled aluminum, and depict cheerful flowers, suns, and trees. When the sun shines on them, they’re wondrous. Be sure to check out the rest of the gallery’s works, most of which were created by Tampa Bay-area artists.
Help them hit the open road together on his-andhers Schwinn Sivica bikes ($460 each) from Action Sports Center, 2549 Seven Springs Blvd., New Port Richey (actionbicycles2.com). The stylish and colorful 7-speed bicycles feature a relaxed seating position to make recreational rides extra comfy.
Treat the folks to a vibrant glass animal sculpture by Borowski Glass ($350- $1,600) from Syd Entel Galleries and Susan Benjamin Glass, 247 Main St., Safety Harbor (sydentelgalleries.com). The Borowski Glass team consists of three brothers who learned their craft from their father, a master glass blower. Their colorful, abstract sculptures depict playful birds, bees, reptiles, and more adorable critters.
If Santa’s feeling extra generous while at the gallery, consider the exquisite Lapis Borsetta ($1,900), a stunning lilac and gold glass sculpture created by Vermont artist Randi F. Solin. Part of Solin’s Window Series, the piece, which contains layers of colors and incorporates sterling silver foil and leaf, is designed to engage the viewer to gaze upon it as its depth reveals itself.

Best Local Gifts for Colleagues You and your coworkers share a special bond. Think of them this holiday season with a gift that’s perfect for the office space. What better gift to give your favorite colleague than a lush houseplant to beautify his or her workspace? You’ll find an extraordinary selection at Wild Roots, 1949 1st Ave. S, Unit A, St. Petersburg (352-8716975). Shop owner Amanda Hill says a cylindrical snake plant, ($6-$32 depending on size) would work well in an office because the plant can tolerate lower light. Says Hill, “You can just water it once a week and they’re good. They’re a very low-maintenance plant.”
Chocolate lovers from far and wide flock all year to William Dean Chocolates, 2790 W Bay Drive, Belleair Bluffs (williamdeanchocolates.com), where they enjoy gourmet chocolates and sweet candy confections created by owner and chief chocolatier Bill Brown. During the holiday season, the shop goes out of its way to delight revelers with stunning chocolate creations for both Christmas and Hanukkah. Choose from an edible easel featuring an adorable portrait of Santa made from 100 percent dark or milk chocolate ($25), or a sweet spinning chocolate dreidel ($10), among many other options. Why not treat your officemates to a 15-piece Christmas edition gift box? Choose from all of the shop’s flavors, as well as special holiday flavors like pumpkin caramel, gingerbread, eggnog and pecan ($32).
Is your colleague up for a raise? Spread some luck around with a pretty money tree plant, which according to ancient folklore, brings good luck and prosperity (prices vary). Or if you’re feeling creative, design your own hanging terrarium for about $20 using the store’s DIY terrarium bar that’s chock full of lovely rocks and crystals. Holiday gift boxes are also available at Toffee to Go, 3251 W Bay to Bay Blvd., Tampa (toffeetogo.com). The festive red-andgreen boxes come in four sizes — ¼-pound, ½-pound, 1-pound or 2-pound — and are filled with your choice of one of four delectable gourmet toffees or a combination of each. Best of all, the shop will ship for you. Perfect for those with remote jobs who’d like to send a gift to the boss ($12-$49).
For a colleague who loves coffee, consider a gift bag from The Coffee Mill, 12199 Indian Rocks Road, Largo (coffeemill.biz). The eclectic coffee shop has something of a dual personality, offering 62 varieties of gourmet coffee — 22 of which are roasted on site — and also a variety of gift items, including cute knick-knacks, puzzles, toys and jewelry. Just about anything in the store can be incorporated into a thoughtful custom-designed gift bag, or you can choose a ready-made bag full of the store’s treats. (Prices vary.)

They need stimulation, both mental and physical, and toys really help with that.” One of the shop’s most popular sellers is the Super Shredder Ball ($8-$20), a hand-woven mesh ball stuffed with colorful paper and other surprises. The ball allows curious birds to pluck, shred, and play to their hearts’ content.

MAKE YOUR FAVORITE READERS By Gina Vivinetto, Times correspondent
Got book lovers on your list? We’ve scoured this season’s new releases and found great gift ideas for readers who love sci-fi, music, mysteries and more. Joni Mitchell is lauded as one of pop music’s true geniuses for good reason: her virtuoso guitar-playing, poetic lyrics, and soaring, sweet falsetto made her a superstar in the 1970s and one of the most influential recording artists of all time. Music critic David Yaffe’s new biography, Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell ($28, Sarah Crichton Books), draws on dozens of interviews with Mitchell, her musician peers and others, to piece together the life and songs of the free-spirited Canadian prairie girl and self-taught musician who would dazzle Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Prince and Bjork, while changing the landscape of popular music. (Available at Oxford Exchange, 420 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.) Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison explores themes that recur in her work — race, fear, borders and belonging — in The Origin of Others ($22.95, Harvard University Press). A collection of essays derived from Morrison’s lectures as a 2016 Harvard University professor, the slim but powerful book examines why race matters and what motivates humans to construct “otherness.” The author considers her own life and novels, politics and history, as well as the literature of Faulkner, Hemingway, Harriet Beecher Stowe and others in her search for answers. (Available at Oxford Exchange, 420 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.) Manga fans will be thrilled to find Akira: 35th Anniversary Box Set ($199, Kodansha Comics) under the tree. The handsome hardcover box set honors the 35th anniversary of the 1982 debut of Katsuhiro Otomo’s “Akira” series in Kodansha’s Young Magazine. For the next two years, Otomo’s popular story, set in post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo, set the standard for Japanese manga and anime. The collection features the complete series (volumes 1-6) in large-format hardcovers, plus the Akira Club art book. It also presents the series in its authentic right-to-left format with original art. (Available at Anime Fix, 6185 Central Ave., St. Petersburg.)

Sci-fi geeks adored Andy Weir’s bestselling 2014 debut novel The Martian, which was adapted into a blockbuster movie starring Matt Damon. Weir is back with the suspenseful Artemis ($27, Crown), whose female protagonist, Jazz Bashara, is a small-time criminal living in the only city on the moon. When Jazz sees an opportunity to pull off the perfect heist, she finds herself embroiled in a deadly conspiracy. (Available at Books at Park Place, 10468 Roosevelt Blvd. N, St. Petersburg.)
Legendary suspense novelist Mary Higgins Clark has teamed up again with co-author Alafair Burke for Every Breath You Take ($26.99, Simon & Schuster), their fourth mystery in the bestselling Under Suspicion series. The novel follows as the series’ protagonist, TV producer Laurie Moran, investigates the unsolved murder of one of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s wealthiest donors on the night of the glitzy Met Gala. Literature lovers will devour A Secret Sisterhood: The Literary Friendships of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot and Virginia Woolf ($27, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Authors Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney rely on letters and diaries to detail the surprising transatlantic friendship between novelists George Eliot and Harriet Beecher Stowe, the passionate bond between alleged rivals Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, and more. We know you have the best intentions. This year, you won’t be the one fighting for that last parking spot at the mall or waiting in long lines at the post office. Instead you’ll be home, sipping eggnog, wrapping presents, and watching everyone else stress out on Facebook. But just in case your best intentions don’t materialize, here is your survival guide to last-minute shopping.
DEADLINES The US Postal Service deadlines to get your holiday gifts delivered on time are: parcel post, Dec. 15; letters and cards, Dec. 20; priority mail, Dec. 21; express mail, Dec. 22. If you’re sending beyond the continental United States, deadlines are about a week earlier.
SURVIVAL TIPS
LAST-MINUTE GIFT IDEAS
• Go early: Many stores have extended holiday hours, so take advantage of them. Your best bet is to go early on a weekday, when more people are still at work. Your second best option to avoid crowds is to go very late, near closing time. If you must shop during peak hours, grin and bear it. It will be over soon.
• Gift certificates: Treat friends to favorite local shops, restaurants and movie theaters and reward your- self, too. At Three Birds Tavern, 1492 Fourth St. N in St. Petersburg, for example, when you buy a
• Go on your own: Shopping with friends and family might be more fun, but it tends to bring distractions. Your best bet to stay focused is to go by yourself.

• Order online, pick up locally: Big box stores do this, but many local businesses also offer online shopping now. Plus, you’ll get the added personal touch. Artist Heather New (artbyheathernew.com), for example, meets local customers to deliver their purchases.
• For friends who don’t need anything, consider donating in their name to their favorite local non-profit. If all else fails, go DIY: Homemade cookies, creatively packaged, always make excel
• Shop and ship: At Gulfport Beach Bazaar, 3115 Beach Blvd. S, you’ll find home décor, collectibles and other gifts. And there’s a post office right inside the store!

Food, and things to make food or serve it with, are a can’t-miss holiday gift that everyone can share and enjoy.
This year, Keeler might be wrapping up a copy of her new favorite, Dorie’s Cookies by Dorie Greenspan (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016) with a few bottles of Nielsen-Massey pure vanilla extract.
By Diane M. Craig, Times correspondent
The smell of freshly baked cookies, wine mulling on the stove, or a turkey roasting in the oven … food plays a major role in our holiday rituals. Gifts from the kitchen are particularly sweet because they represent time taken and thought given, and what can be a better gift than that? Cookies, breads, and candies generally top the list of kitchen-made gifts. “I like to give useful, thoughtful gifts that can be used in the kitchen,” says Janet Krietemeyer Keeler, journalism instructor at University of South Florida St. Petersburg, former food editor at the Tampa Bay Times and author of Cookielicious. “My go-to is a cookbook that I think the receiver would like, along with a piece of corresponding equipment. If it’s a book about salads, I would accompany it with a salad spinner, or a good-quality vegetable peeler — you’d be surprised how many people don’t have one — wrapped up with a vegetarian cookbook. The yin to that yang would be an instant-read meat thermometer with a cookbook full of roast recipes.”
“I have several bottles (Madagascar bourbon plus Tahitian and Mexican blends) in my cabinet and they last me through the year because I bake a lot. My favorite is the Madagascar Bourbon vanilla paste. If I am feeling generous, I also give a good-quality aluminum baking sheet,” she says. Tampa Bay Times food critic Laura Reiley likes making infused vodkas using berries, anisette, or spicy chilies and packaging them with bloody mary ingredients. She also likes the idea of wrapping up a jar of “really good artisan popping corn with a bunch of recipes for toppings, like Togarashi, a Japanese spice mix available at Asian groceries. It’s spicy, sweet, and salty with a little citrus vibe — great on popcorn!” Other kitchen foodie ideas include bottles of olive oil infused with freshly peeled garlic cloves, spicy chili peppers or fresh herbs like tarragon or thyme. Show off the contents in a pretty bottle with a customized label. These are just a few ideas. Sweeten your own culinary imagination this holiday season with homemade gifts from your kitchen to their hearts.

PISTACHIO & CHERRY 2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus more for coating 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup shelled, unsalted natural pistachios, coarsely chopped 1 cup dried cherries (or cranberries) 3 1/3 cups sifted cake flour 1 2/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease large baking sheet or line with parchment paper. Beat butter and confectioners’ sugar on medium-high until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla and salt, then pistachios and cherries. Using spatula, mix in both flours; do not over mix. Shape dough by generous tablespoons into football shaped ovals. Place on prepared baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart. Bake cookies until bottoms just begin to brown, about 12 minutes. Cool on cookie sheet for 10 minutes. Pour generous amount of confectioners’ sugar into a bowl. Add a few warm cookies at a time and gently turn to coat thickly. Transfer to cooling rack or waxed paper. Repeat to coat cookies with sugar again. Cool completely. For many people, that means volunteering with local organizations, churches, or food banks.

We all volunteer for different reasons. Some do it to learn new skills or explore a different kind of work, while others want to give back or make a difference in the community.

In Hillsborough County, residents can take a quiz and match their interests with the community’s needs on the county’s website, hcflgov.net/en/ residents/citizens/volunteers. To find the quiz, enter “volunteer quiz” in the search box. The county lists six categories, including Aging Services, community services (such as homeless services, the Veterans Museum, Citizen Corps and Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful) and leadership services. Kids and Teens places volunteers with Children Services and Head Start; Pets and Animals pairs volunteers with the Pet Resource Center, and volunteers work with the agency to get pets adopted. They also help with everything from grooming and walking the animals to taking their photos to prepping them for a new home. If working outside is more appealing, consider volunteering with Parks and Recreation, which offers opportunities for training with youth athletics.

Whatever your reason, there are plenty of volunteering opportunities throughout Tampa Bay, particularly during the holiday season. Our county governments’ websites make it easy to learn how and where you can do the most good for your community.

A 14-year linebacker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Derrick Brooks turned his success into a big benefit for the community. His foundation, Derrick Brooks Charities, works to provide youths with educational programs and “opportunities to develop cultural and social vision.” Inspired by his earliest project, the Brooks Brunch (which introduces children to experiences they may never have had the opportunity to enjoy), the Brooks Foundation has served approximately 3,000 young people in 10 schools, two Neighborhood Service Centers, the Boys and Girls Club and the Juvenile Diversion/Teen Court Program, and helped more than 65 students graduate from college.

THINK BEFORE
Before you send that present packing, read these tips from an etiquette expert. By Virginia Pelley, Times correspondent
Remember the Seinfeld episode in which Elaine is outraged that her label maker was regifted? Whether people find the idea of regifting distasteful or think recycling presents is practical and perfectly acceptable, almost everyone has an embarrassing story about a regift that went awry. “As careful as we try to be, we’ve all either experienced or heard a story where someone gets caught regifting,” says etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, author of Modern Etiquette for a Better Life and founder of the Protocol School of Texas. “I wouldn’t say you should never regift, but you need to be extremely thoughtful about it.” Passing along gifts can be tricky, but it can be done if you follow these dos and don’ts. Do tape an info note on potential regifts If you receive something nice that you think might make a good gift for someone else, and it’s still in its original packaging, label it noting who gave it to you and when, Gottsman advises. So at the very least, you avoid giving it to the same person.

Don’t regift family heirlooms The family silver might not be your taste, and that ancient afghan your aunt made might make you sneeze like crazy, but resist the temptation to pass it on. “If a family member gives you something that’s meant to stay in the family, such as a piece of old costume jewelry or an antique platter, it’s important to be respectful of the gift,” Gottsman says.

“The Place to go for Christmas!”
Do think it through first It can be tempting to save a few dollars by passing along an unwanted gift to someone you’re sure will love it, but first consider the recipient’s feelings – and proximity to you. Ask yourself if there’s a chance the giver might notice that the gift is missing. The original giver’s feelings should trump the convenience and savings of giving the gift away. A gift from someone who rarely visits might be a better bet than regifting something from your sister who comes over frequently, but proceed with caution regardless.
Don’t regift joke or white elephant gifts

This one should be obvious: You know your aunt wouldn’t actually use that toilet-shaped mug, so don’t try to pass it off as a normal present. The same goes for promotional items with a logo or company name on them.

Do triple-check the guest list of regifting parties Regifting parties are a great way to regift responsibly — as long as you don’t bring something the host or another guest gave you. If there’s even a slim chance that someone at the party might recognize your item as something he or she gave you, bring something else.
Don’t regift cards without due diligence Gift cards to Amazon, a bookstore or a gas station can be useful, but make sure you call to make sure the full amount is still on the card, Gottsman says. It’s possible someone regifted the card to you, forgetting they made a purchase on it already, so that $25 gift card is now worth only $12.74.
The safest regift: one that’s not an official present but more of a thoughtful gesture Be upfront about a gift’s “used” status. You can say something like, “Hey, I got this beautiful teapot as a gift, but I don’t drink tea. Since you love tea, I thought you might like it.” This strategy is not only much less stressful because you’re being honest, but your potential recipient is also free to refuse it if he or she doesn’t want it — which prevents any embarrassment down the road if that person ends up regifting the teapot.
