P
lease join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign for Man or Woman of the Year. I am part of team working to raise as much as possible in a 10-week period. Every dollar I raise counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most votes/raises the most money is named the Man or Woman of the Year. But as you know, everyone wins when cancer loses, and thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund the therapies and treatments that save lives, not someday but today. Over the years, support from people like you have been responsible for "My Own" successful journey in overcoming Multiple Myeloma...Now 4 years in remission. Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day. We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers! All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well. Please visit my Web site often and tell friends who would also like to donate! On behalf of myself and other Blood Cancer patients everywhere, Thank You for your support! suggests a neutral color scheme with one pop of a bright shade, doesn’t mean that’s the final word in decorating. Williams stresses homeowners should decorate to their own tastes and needs and not try to follow someone else’s rules set in stone. This philosophy is evident in the Tampa home of Claude Guidi and Wayne Lewis. They love to entertain, so the couple made sure to create extra space for storing a lot of dinnerware, glassware, linens and other accessories. David and Elizabeth Samuelson also designed their St. Petersburg home for entertaining though in a more casual way. Their house has no dining room, but instead, a farm table between their kitchen and family room. I loved how Elizabeth was barefoot when she greeted me for the interview as well as when she posed for a photograph. Her casually elegant house definitely goes with her personality. In this issue full of an array of different styles, I hope you get some ideas for something that might suit yours. Thank you for reading. —Katherine Snow Smith
Welcome to the annual homes issue. I am grateful again this year for the homeowners who allowed Bay into their lives. Our fashion spread was photographed at two midcentury houses in Sarasota that offered stunning backdrops. We also have thoughts and tips on Florida decor from interior decorator Bunny Williams, whom the New York Times calls a “reigning star among New York decorators. When I told friends I was interviewing one of the most revered people in the interior-decor field, many said her books such as An Affair with a House have given them guidance and graced their coffee tables for years. In Point of View when discussing furnishing a bedroom, Williams advises readers to make sure the bed is big enough for “frequent visits from children and dogs. I asked her if she really does let her dogs up on her bed. She does. They go on the sofa, too. Now, just because Bunny Williams lets her dogs on the furniture doesn’t mean that’s right for everyone. In the same sense, just because she

his is not your grandmother’s wallpaper, or carpets or upholstery, or drapes. A whole new array of textures, colors and shapes has entered the interior design arena. Spaces are being transformed into contemporary areas with a touch of elegance, sometimes surprising and always amazing. Bay talked with three interior designers to get the goods on what is trending and how to get the latest look at home. Suzan Decker Ross of Decker Ross Interiors of Clearwater, Priscilla Castellano of Andrea Lauren Elegant Interiors in Tampa and Amy Bromley of Being in St. Petersburg give us their take on the hottest trends in wall coverings, flooring and fabrics for 2017. Fasten your seat belts. It’s a beautiful ride. At left, textured wall covering with brass ornaments. Andrea Lauren Elegant Interiors. WALL COVERINGS “Some of the textural wall treatments that are currently popular are 3-D architectural applications. They are typically constructed of composite materials, and offer a variety of styles from contemporary geometrics to more traditional patterns. We enjoy utilizing the talents of local artists, and a faux art Shimmerstone finish is one our favorite finishes when we’re creating an accent wall. This finish is similar to Venetian plaster; however, it is much more cost-effective to apply.” — Suzan Decker Ross “It used to be that everyone wanted to remove their existing wallpaper to paint. But with the new metallic finishes, largescale bold patterns and embellishments with jewels or rhinestones, we find that wallpapers can add a wow factor to any room and become a conversational piece all on their own.
“Metallic paints add an unexpected elegance to any room, and can be used in small spills as an accent or on large walls to create undeniable drama. Or you can simply paint your doors and trim in a metallic finish for a rich-looking sheen that is sure to impress. “Millwork on the walls is nothing new, though it has become more widely used in all different styles of rooms. Wood paneling installed in a geometric pattern on a focal wall can add great visual interest to a modern room. Both coastal and farmhouse chic lovers also use their share of wood paneling, whether it be with beadboard, board and batten, or shutter/louvered panels in either an airy or weathered finish.” — Priscilla Castellano “ ‘70s flashback … think grass cloth … think metallic. The patterns that I am drawn to are either large in scale or barely there.” — Amy Bromley

FLOOR COVERINGS “In flooring, the larger wood plank has gained popularity, along with tile ‘wood’ planks in a larger format (7 to 9 inches wide). The finish that features a slight ‘wire brush’ distressed look has become increasingly popular. European white oak is trending in wood flooring, and carpet is definitely going in the direction of soft yarns- like silk. Gray tones are very current in flooring, as well as other areas of design.” — Suzan Decker Ross “Square tiles have become a thing of the past. Even large-scale square tiles are being used less and less, being replaced by 12- by 24-inch tiles installed in a brick-lay pattern for floors, and both horizontally and vertically on walls. “Porcelain versions of natural stone (such as marble) in wispy and airy patterns give a more transitional look while being much easier to maintain than the real stone. “While wood floors will always be a best seller, porcelain tiles in large planks that look like wood are becoming more and more popular. The patterns and textures are ‘real’ enough to make some question whether or not it is really wood, and the wear and tear over time is much more forgiving. Color options are also much more abundant, in price points where that particular wood species may have otherwise been out of budget.” — Priscilla Castellano “Cowhide! Patchwork pieced and whole natural hides. Dyed, stenciled and metallic … hides are in. They bring interest into a room but are also extremely easy to clean and hold up to high traffic.” — Amy Bromley

FABRICS “We are seeing a lot more geometric patterns utilized, particularly in drapery panels. This look offers a clean, contemporary look and is less fussy than other prints. We have also been utilizing more solid, neutral fabrics like linen, in some of our updated designs.” — Suzan Decker Ross “Solid color fabric, bolder and more fun textures and tone-ontone patterns can be used in more in traditional spaces. A crocodile texture, for example, can seem somewhat ‘toneddown’ in a solid color fabric. Using muted or ‘safe’ colors with an unexpected texture or pattern can make you do a double take at an upholstered piece you may have never noticed before. “Fabrics in rich textures with shimmery fibers, and modern tweeds that have threads with a pop of color stitched through them really kick your upholstery up a notch. The mixture of colors and sheens also hide stains easier, making them a more durable option for areas with food or drink or kids. “Embossed vinyls and leathers in a variety of colors and finishes can give furniture or cornices a very custom, highend look. Adding a touch of the unexpected (like a geometric stamping) to a commonly used material (like vinyl or leather) makes a big impact, especially when used in large scale.” — Priscilla Castellano “Color! Soft warm colors and Greenery, the Pantone color of the year. I think it’s a reaction to all the gray and beige we’ve been seeing for a while. I like to call it … ’slightly toasted.’ But more than color or pattern, I’m seeing serviceable and easy care fabrics as the biggest trend. Outdoor fabrics that are being used inside so that you can enjoy living … and not be so concerned about who may spill the red wine. “ — Amy Bromley

T WAS THE EARLY 1950S, WORLD WAR II HAD ENDED AND AMERICA ONCE AGAIN
WAS BUILDING TOWARD A BRIGHT, NEW FUTURE. DEVELOPER PHILIP HISS HIRED
A YOUNG ARCHITECT NAMED PAUL RUDOLPH TO DESIGN A MODEL HOME FOR THE NEW SUBDIVISION HE PLANNED ON A GULF-FRONT SPIT OF SAND IN SARASOTA
BETWEEN ST. ARMAND’S KEY AND LONGBOAT KEY.
What Rudolph produced looked like a giant glass cube, strategically situated at a curve in the road to draw maximum attention from motorists driving by in their Buicks and Chevys. The thousands who stopped found a soaring, light-filled interior and unique roof extending over a pool and gazebo Quickly dubbed the Umbrella House, the elegantly simple structure still stands, an iconic example of what became internationally known as the Sarasota School of Architecture. The Umbrella
House and nearby Goull-Chapell House are among a handful of mid-century homes in Hiss’ Lido Shores that have been restored by admirers of the Sarasota’s School’s clean lines and artful adaptations to the Gulf Coast’s steamy, subtropical climate. “It’s such a special house, and our hope was that we’d be able to share it and let people see it,’’ says Anne Essner, who with husband Robert bought the Umbrella House two years ago for $1.6 million. “We were afraid it would go into neglect or be turned into a three-story concrete monstrosity.’’

One of the most interesting things is that it has lots of levels. So there are a lot of visual changes within the house that make it feel bigger.” ANNE ESSNER, owner of the Umbrella House
After moving from New Jersey, where Robert once headed a major pharmaceutical company, the Essners settled into a gulf-front home directly across from the Umbrella House. The previous owners had begun a restoration of the house, most of whose wooden, umbrella-like roof had long since disintegrated. They had gotten as far as replacing the slatted roof to the near end of the pool when they decided to sell. “It kind of looked like it had a hat on,’’ Anne says. “It doesn’t get its proportions right until you put this umbrella on.’’ The Essners had the umbrella — now made of durable extruded aluminum — extended to the full length of the pool with an oculus, or opening, in the center to allow in the warming rays of the sun. At the far end is a solid overhang for shade. The exterior today is more hurricane resistant though very close to the way it looked in 1953.
The exterior and pool area of the Umbrella House.
Inside, the Essners found the house in generally good shape but painted orange and other loud colors. The couple restored the walls to the original gray, accented by yellow on the metal railing of a loft that resembles a ship’s deck, perhaps inspired by Rudolph’s war years in the Navy. “One of the most interesting thing is that it has lots of levels,’’ Anne says, noting the loft and a step-down conversation area with fireplace off the living/dining room. “So there are a lot of visual changes within the house that make it feel bigger.’’ Though relatively small — just 1,800 square feet — the three-bedroom house also seems far larger thanks to its original floor-to-ceiling glass jalousie panels that afford an expansive view of the pool area and crushed-shell deck. The Essners have kept true to the home’s minimalist style with sleek furnishings that include a vintage Italian dining table, French metal-framed dining chairs from the 1930s and a pair of new but retro-looking wood-andleather armchairs. A mid-century settee from Anne’s childhood faces the fireplace. Over its 64 years, the Umbrella House has been photographed for countless publications. Architectural Digest
called it one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid 20th century. The Essners, its new stewards, open the house for fundraisers by organizations that have included the Sarasota Opera and nearby Mote Marine Laboratory. It also is available for architectural tours and is a star attraction of Sarasota MOD Weekend, an annual event that highlights the city’s surviving mid-century homes and other buildings, including a Rudolph-designed addition to Sarasota High. (Rudolph, who died in 1997, went on from Sarasota to chair Yale University’s acclaimed department of architecture.) The Essners occasionally use the house themselves, slipping across the street to enjoy a glass of wine by the fireplace. They have even invited curious strollers to come in and take a look. “We get a kick out of seeing people get so excited,’’ Anne says. “We finished it a year ago and thought interest would die down, but no. There are native Sarasotans who have not seen it.’’ The Essners own another Paul Rudolph house in Lido Shores, near where their friends Carrie and Kenneth Cox have restored a mid-century home.

We were completely engaged by the idea of updating the house so it would be comfortable for today’s lifestyle but preserving the tenets of the Sarasota School.” CARRIE COX, owner of a mid-century home, Lido Shores
The Coxes also live on the gulf, but worried about what would happen to the house across the street when it became a rental, then sat unsold for years. It, too, had an illustrious history — Hiss, the developer of Lido Shores and an architect himself, designed it in 1954. One family lived there for 40 years, then an architect bought and refurbished it before building a much larger home next door. The Coxes acquired it three years ago for $572,300. “While we had thought about buying a guesthouse, we also saw a chance to buy one of the Sarasota School of Architecture homes and make sure it was maintained and preserved,’’ Carrie says. “We were completely engaged by the idea of updating the house so it would be comfortable for today’s lifestyle but preserving the tenets of the Sarasota School.’’ Like the entire modern architecture movement of the mid 20th century, the Sarasota School eschewed the heaviness and ornamentation of much prewar construction in favor of a simple, harmonious-with-nature style. But Hiss and other Sarasota architects helped push the movement into a new direction — adapting architecture to its climate. Hiss had spent time in Bali, whose climate is similar to the Gulf Coast’s, and was impressed by the use of overhangs there to provide shade. He added overhangs to the side of the house by the pool, and designed the rest of the home so that each room had cross ventilation to take advantage of cooling gulf breezes at a time when air-conditioning was still a rarity. Clerestory windows in the living room keep out the direct sun but let in plenty of light. Because the house was fairly small, the Coxes decided to widen the living room by converting what had been a carport, then a garage. That posed a challenge: They also wanted the new addition to have the same pink-flecked terrazzo floor as the original part of the house.

Period decoration keeps the theme in the bedroom. Below, a secluded outdoor nook off a hallway provides display space for a sculpture.
Alas, an international search revealed that the pink flecks no longer were made. But a close-enough approximation was found that it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between old and new. The company that did the work turned out to be owned by the same man who, as an 18-year-old apprentice, had helped put down the original terrazzo decades earlier. The Coxes also converted a small courtyard into a third bathroom so each bedroom would have its own bath. But they kept many other features intact, including one bathroom with its original tile in dove gray and Mamie Eisenhower pink; and the fireplace with its skinny tan bricks. For Carrie, much of the fun has been finding vintage accessories that scream 1950s, from the Cool Cat figurines to the Twin Star dinner plates that grace a blond Heywood Wakefield butterfly table with dog-bone chairs. “My husband says: ‘This is the kind of stuff we threw out when my grandmother died.’ ’’
A vintage Thunderbird outside of the Coxes’ home.
Chairman and CEO of Humacyte, a firm that makes human-tissue replacements, Carrie travels often and found many of the items on eBay while killing time in airports. Some of the more substantial pieces, such as a Finn Juhl cocktail table and Adrian Persall gondola sofa, were acquired in stores specializing in mid-century design. Although Carrie grew up with furniture now considered classics of the Mad Men era, it was “only as an adult that I began to appreciate the clean lines of mid century and the sculptural appeal,’’ she says. One of the home’s showstoppers is an enormous bar and cabinet that originally were part of a 1960s apartment in Stockholm, Sweden (see page 79). With the building about to be razed, an antiques dealer bought the bar and shipped it to Minnesota. The Coxes found it online and had it sent in pieces to Sarasota, where it now houses a collection of vintage cocktail glass and Blenko vases. Nearby stands a tall wooden screen with three curved
panels. Whether it was meant to evoke a surfboard or rocket ship has prompted “many discussions around the bar,’’ Carrie says. The Coxes use the house for guests and parties, but also open it for tours during Sarasota MOD Weekend. While hundreds of homes in Palm Springs, Calif. — often considered the nation’s mid-century mecca — have been preserved, Sarasota’s inventory of mid-century structures has steadily shrunk. Of the 120 or so original homes in Lido Shores, many have given way to new behemoths. The fate of Hiss’ former studio, next to the Umbrella House and now on the market, remains uncertain. Which is all the more reason the Coxes, Essners and others like to share their marvels, whose style continues to inspire architects even as the original homes are disappearing. “It has brought interest in Sarasota architecture,’’ Anne says. “People who never had any idea Sarasota had this kind of architecture now are fascinated by it.’’

Stunning sunsets & casual camaraderie
BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH PHOTOGRAPHS BY JIM DAMASKE
W
hen Elizabeth and David Samuelson started planning the house they built six years ago on Snell Isle, the couple envisioned a West Indies look with masonry stucco walls and a metal hip roof. As they moved forward, it evolved into something they describe as coastal contemporary. With distinctive details and views of the water and downtown St. Petersburg from almost every room, the house is stunning but somehow manages to be low-key and inviting. Perhaps it should be tagged as “comfortable, coastal contemporary.”
Elizabeth and David Samuelson, at right, didn’t want any wasted space in their Snell Isle house, which has numerous luxurious features yet is a comfortable home for a family of four.
A nook in the kitchen provides a great place for the Samuelson children to snack and study.
“We wanted to keep it very casual. You can dress it up and make it elegant, but you can also take your shoes off,” Elizabeth said. “We wanted a place we could entertain and also have our kids and their friends hang out.” The casual, inviting feel is influenced by the home’s distressed wood floor and two dogs, Stanley and Blu, running about. But it’s also in the design of having one big, open space right when you walk in. The Samuelsons loved the character of the historic Old Northeast house they moved from but were careful not to replicate some of the features they didn’t like. They felt it was too chopped up, with numerous smaller rooms. Now, their kitchen, dining area and living room flow into each other with no walls, doors or arches separating them. Even the floor-to-ceiling glass pocket doors surrounding the first floor easily slide out of view so there is no barrier between the outside and inside. The house doesn’t have a separate dining room that’s saved only for special occasions. Instead, there’s a long farm table between the kitchen and living room. “We didn’t want any wasted space,” David said.

APRIL 2017
When it’s just him, Elizabeth and their teenagers, Aidan and Aliyah, the family eats around the zinc-top kitchen table. When they entertain, everyone sits at the big table or adults convene there and the younger crowd is in the kitchen. Art, most of it with a coastal component, adds elegance to the casual feel. There is framed artwork created by Aliyah, a budding artist, as well as Elizabeth’s aunt and grandfather along with artwork found at Mainsail and Gasparilla art festivals and on their travels. When the Samuelsons moved in, every room in the house had a view of the St. Petersburg Pier except the guest room. So when they saw a painting of the inverted pyramid by local artist Marc Levasseur with an old headboard as the canvas, they bought it for the guest room. “Now it’s the only room where you can see the Pier,” Elizabeth laughed. (The Pier was razed in 2015 to make way for a new design.) The Samuelsons commissioned Levasseur to create a large painting of a blue school of fish to hang in the twostory entryway next to a chandelier of about 400 dangling clear fish.
A farm table separates the kitchen and living room. The ceilings are dotted with recessed LED lights that give off no heat.

An open-concept floor plan combining the kitchen and the living area allows family and guests to interact during the entire visit.
David, a radiologist by day, became an artist by night to create the striking piece. “We had seen this amazing fish chandelier in Steamboat (Colorado) and really wanted something like that,” Elizabeth recounted. They found something similar with porcelain fish online and almost ordered it until she realized the price was in pounds, not dollars, and cost more than they wanted to spend. So David decided he’d make it himself. “I made a fish out of that Sculpey clay you get from Michaels and made a mold out of that,” he explained. He poured blue silicone over the clay fish to make the mold then poured clear polyester resin into the mold to make a fish. “When I really got the hang of that I made a bigger mold that could make 15 fish at one time.” He made most of the fish while they were still living at the Old Northeast house and had almost 400 produced by the time the Snell Isle house was complete.
The refrigerator and pantry have doors that look like antique kitchen cabinets.

Below, a stream of water from overhead fills the tub in the master bath.
“After we moved in, he would sit up there on scaffolding at midnight every night and thread the fish,” said Elizabeth, a physical therapist. Sometimes, he had a glass of wine up on his perch, she added. David formed a spiral out of malleable track lighting then tied about 40 strands of fishing line to it. He threaded 10 or so fish on each strand. It’s not so surprising that the couple would come up with a way to make a chandelier of 400 dangling fish. At their previous home they were fierce competitors in the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association’s annual Halloween decorating contest. Over the years, the Samuelsons’ 1917 Craftsman style home had a life-size shark protruding from the front door, a huge Indiana Jones boulder dangling off the roof and a troupe of choreographed dancers re-enacting Michael Jackson’s Thriller routine the year he died. They won the contest when they created “Night of the Living Apps” with Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. (Since moving away, the Samuelsons have teamed up with friends who still live in the Old Northeast to create more haunted scenes including Ghostbusters, The Hunger Games and one paying tribute to Disney World’s Haunted Mansion ride with 20 ghost dancers made of dry cleaning bags.) Theirs was the first house in Florida to have energy-efficient LED lighting from St. Petersburg’s LumaStream. The company has been installing low-heat commercial lighting for several years but this was its first residential project. The ceilings upstairs and downstairs are dotted with recessed LED lights that give off no heat.
They have already seen savings compared to the power bill in their former house. The couple tried to use environmentally sound products elsewhere. The distressed wood floors are made of engineered hardwood, with multiple layers of recycled wood topped with a layer of new hardwood. The floor of their wine cellar is made out of cork — hundreds of circles the size of wine corks. Other details set the home apart. Their master bathroom tub sits on a rectangle of stones surrounded by tile embedded with shells. Water pours out of a faucet in the ceiling to fill the tub. Not only do the refrigerator and freezer have doors that look like antique kitchen cabinets, so do the pantry and coffee station. When Elizabeth recently hosted a fundraiser for the Museum of Fine Arts, the caterer had to keep asking her where the secret door to the pantry was, like Scooby searching for the hidden passageway in the bookcase to recover Shaggy. Their contractor, Windstar Homes, had an interior designer at every planning meeting. Elizabeth liked her idea of putting a freestanding china cabinet in the kitchen instead of wall-to-wall cabinets but couldn’t find one the right size until she was at Blue Moon Trading Company. While picking up the zinc-top kitchen table with a rustic tree trunk for the base, she spied a white distressed wooden cabinet just the right size. Someone in Tampa had the piece custom-made but then decided against it so it was on a fire sale. Elizabeth took in a few aqua tiles from the pool to Blue Moon’s in-house artist so the cabinet matches the home’s watery color palate. Right off the kitchen is a large office/mudroom with three desks, two computers, a dog bed and a 4-foot high chinchilla cage, which is home to Moonlight. “This is where we store our life,” Elizabeth said. And life is lived everywhere else.
David Samuelson designed and made this chandelier featuring hundreds of clear fish that hangs in the two-story foyer.

hen friends in St. Petersburg took the condo plunge, Claude Guidi and Wayne Lewis knew they’d be next to go high-rise. The couple purchased two adjoining Bayshore Boulevard condos in late 2014, enticed by the promise of concierge service, resort-like amenities and above all, amazing panoramic views from the 22nd floor of Monte Carlo Towers. “Dusk is breathtaking,” said Lewis, communications leader for Bristol-Myers Squibb in Tampa. He practically inhales the sunset from his favorite spot, the kitchen breakfast table, although seeing sunrise from the master suite is pretty tough to beat. “You can see downtown Tampa and as far south as the Sunshine Skyway,” Lewis said. “On a clear day, you can see stingrays and turtles.”
Dr. Claude Guidi, left, and Wayne Lewis take in the sweeping view from the condo’s terrace. At left, floor to ceiling, wraparound views of Bayshore Boulevard and beyond provide natural light and a stunning backdrop to the couple’s condo.

Guidi’s desk occupies a corner, near his fancy coffeemaker and convenient to the Sub-Zero refrigerator which is hidden behind custom wood and lacquer cabinetry made in Germany. Opposite page, gold leaf chandeliers hang in the recessed ceiling of the entrance gallery.
“And dolphins,” adds Guidi, 64, the senior radiologist of Tampa-based Radiology Associates of Florida. “Day and night, the view is very entertaining,” he said, picturing the endless stream of joggers, bikers and dogwalkers. “The only thing missing is the pool boys to bring you a drink,” Guidi said, approving of the swimming pool, tennis courts and gym, all recently updated in the 30-year-old building. When they’re not entertaining, the partners of 16 years are likely to be traveling. “We love to cook and have old-fashioned dinner parties, then lock up and take off skiing or to South America,” said Lewis, 49. Chilean-born Guidi visits his mother at least twice a year. Although the previous owner had knocked down some walls and removed one kitchen, the double unit still felt like two apartments with two entrances.

Deconstruction began in January 2015. The 4,200square-foot space was stripped down to the bare walls. Nothing remained but the supporting walls and plumbing. “The recessed tray ceiling in the dining room was designed to hide the pipes,” Lewis said. Each of them created a wish-list and a must-list. For Lewis, smart home technology was No. 1. “I can operate the air conditioning, audio system and window blinds from my smart phone,” he said, always happy to demonstrate. Guidi wanted a gourmet kitchen. “Cooking is my relaxation,” he said, “I love to try new recipes… empanadas, fancy desserts, especially French cuisine.” He grew up in Santiago, where his French-born parents owned a hotel that the family lived in. “No matter what you do, everyone gathers in the kitchen,” said Guidi, whose desk sits three feet from a fancy, built-in Wolf coffee system. “I can’t start the day without my latte.”
The only thing missing is the pool boys to bring you a drink,” Guidi said, approving of the swimming pool, tennis courts and gym, all recently updated in the 30-year-old condominum. DR. CLAUDE GUIDI

Upholstery designer Lisa Diaz created the headboard, valance and pillows for the master bedroom. The window treatments are automated, but are often left open at night “to wake up to a beautiful sunrise,” Guidi said. Two rocking chairs beckon from the terrace.
Tampa custom home designer and developer Thomas Everett Lamb was just the person to marry their strong opinions with sound ideas in a pre-defined space. Lamb drew up four options, each featuring four bedrooms with en-suite baths plus a powder room. The winner is modern, handsome and streamlined. And functional. There are large walk-in closets in the kitchen and dining room. One is a giant pantry with a sink to function as a caterer’s kitchen. One is a butler’s dream hidden behind a mirrored door opening to shelves loaded with nine sets of china, glassware, linens and serving accessories. Much of their furniture moved with them, including the living room sofa and a grand piano, “automated since neither of us plays,” Lewis notes. The piano fit in the elevator, but an 11-foot sofa segment was hoisted up to the 22nd floor catwalk.
Lewis calls the new 80-inch television “overkill but amazing.” The linear fireplace below is fueled by ethanol, leaving no residue or smoke. “We made sure our art was made to feel at home here,” Lewis said. Their collection includes several works he bought in Japan and quite a few paintings Guidi bought from Chilean artists. They own two Salvador Dali lithographs and are big fans of Tampa artist Alberto Murillo. An 18th-century tapestry that hung in the dining room of the Guidi family hotel fits in perfectly. Most everything was framed by Master Art & Frame in Tampa. The learning curve was steep and stressful during the 18month renovation, twice as long as anticipated. But, they said, personal gains far surpassed the inconveniences: The privilege of a year of living with Lewis’ mother, building a lasting friendship with designer Lamb and reinforcing their own relationship.

L STUNNING STRUCTURE ido Shores, an enclave of midcentury houses in Sarasota designed by forward-thinking architects, provides the perfect setting for forward-thinking fashion with sleek lines,
exquisite detail and beautiful structure. Not all of the clothes and shoes are minimalist and
purposeful like the homes, but they are still striking and works of art in their own right.
On her, white cocktail dress, Aida by Nicole Bakti, $379; pumps embellished with stones, $219, Helen’s Heart Shoes, Georgette’s Boutique. Green top handle satchel bag, $398, Waldorf; gold duchess stone linear earrings, $168; gold duchess stone linear necklace, $198. All from Henri Bendel. On him, white linen shirt, $110; salmon shorts, $98; espadrilles, $77. All from John Craig.
SORRY DON It’s hard to reference the midcentury without a nod to Mad Men. It was the iconic television show that made generations well past those who actually lived in the ’50s and ’60s appreciate some of the chaotic decades’ architecture, furniture and, most of all, fashion. Here we have Megan Draper making a cameo appearance in Sarasota in a dress that would shock some, but she pulls it off flawlessly with her classic, refined beauty. Perhaps if Don Draper had serenaded her the proper way, they might have lasted.
COMPLICATEDLY SIMPLE To the naked eye this midcentury house is a simple box and this pink sheath is a simple dress. But when the smart observer looks closer, you see that every line serves a purpose to envelop and enhance. The pink rosebuds edging these sleeves are formed by intricately planned, intricately cut, intricately sewn and intricately executed small swaths of fabric. But don’t feel bad if you didn’t notice all this at first. That’s the intention of the architect and the fashion designer. You see the beautiful end product as a whole instead of all the work it took to get there. Ruffle sheath dress, $695, Lampung, La Petite Robe di Chiara Boni; hummingbird satin bag, $2,295, Celeste; Mad-Purple Fur Pom-Pom Suede d’Orsay pumps, $895, Rosa 100, Jimmy Choo. Light blue Rox choker, $168; Rox earrings, $78; Rox ring, $98. All from Henri Bendel. On him, turquoise linen shirt, $98; “Grade 8 Panama” hat, $150; Sand trousers, $128. All from Tommy Bahama.
LOVELINESS Whether it’s exquisite architecture, vintage automobiles or a fashion statement that’s far from practical, sometimes you simply must feed your passion. Perhaps Pulitzer Prizewinning poet Sara Teasdale put it best: BETTER Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstasy Give all you have been, or could be.
THE ECUADOR HAT The famous Panama hat is not actually from Panama. The hats that became a staple in men’s fashions in the early 1800s, as well as this current one from Tommy Bahama, were and are handwoven in Ecuador. They inherited their name because the early salesmen of the hats realized there was much more traffic going through Panama and started shops and outposts there.

MAKE THAT A DOUBLE Laura Petrie, meet Lady Gaga. When Mary Tyler Moore played her famous role wearing fitted, cropped pants (pants mind you), women across the country decided, well, then they could, too. Fifty-five years later, Lady Gaga introduced the masses to the “pantscape when she donned ivory pants and an ivory white cape at the 2016 Oscars. This red outfit combines the best of both their worlds.

BOUGAINVILLEA BEAUTIFUL In a competition between what’s given to us by nature and what’s manufactured by people, nature usually wins. But in this case, it’s hard to call. This midriff is intricately embroidered with narrow ribbons to create flowers and creativity that rival the real thing. Add to that a skirt with three layers of black tulle and the combination might just intimidate Mother Nature.
MODEL HOME Philip Hiss, the developer of Lido Shores, asked architect Paul Rudolph to create a model home for his cutting-edge project. Rudolph gave him what would become known as the Umbrella House because of its slat roof over the pool. Decades later, it would be deemed “one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid twentieth century” by Architectural Digest. The house is now used mostly for education and private functions, but Hiss and Rudolph might be glad it was briefly a model home once again showcasing this simple yet sensational sapphire pantsuit.

FLORIDA LIGHT
Architectural Digest calls her “Grand Dame Bunny Williams,” while the New York Times refers to Bunny Williams as “a reigning star among New York decorators.” To Vogue, she’s one of the most highly sought after interior designers who has, ironically, perfected her idea of desirable imperfection. One of Williams’ trademarks is blending different styles and periods of furnishings along with personal items to make homes distinctive. She designs licensed lines of furnishings and accessories for Ballard Designs and Century Furniture among others and has her own 4,000-square-foot store, Bunny Williams Home, in New York City. Her interior design firm, Bunny Williams Incorporated, serves clients around the world, including Florida, especially in Palm Beach. Her latest of six books, A House by the Sea, is about La Colina, the house she built with husband and antiques dealer John Rosselli in Punta Cana, an enclave in the Dominican Republic. Williams recently talked with Bay editor Katherine Snow Smith and shared insight on decorating in tropical settings, making a room distinctive and catching a good nap on a sunny porch.
At left, up North, Bunny Williams says, dark colors make rooms feel cozy. Florida’s light, however, makes dark colors feel oppressive. It’s easy though to go overboard with bright colors and create “a cliche room.” Stick with neutrals or combine neutrals and one bright color as with this space in Palm Beach.
Bunny Williams advocates combining different tastes to create rooms like this one at her Punta Cana home that are multidimensional and not boring. The key, however, is not to get carried away. “It’s not a tossed salad. It’s about balance,” she says. Photographs of homes courtesy of Bunny Williams Incorporated

Enchanting rooms, like fascinating people, are multidimensional. … If you accept the idea that many different tastes can go together, you can create rooms that are never boring.” BUNNY WILLIAMS Outdoor furniture need not be uncomfortable as evidenced by this loggia Williams decorated in Hobe Sound.
What do you enjoy about working on homes in Florida? I think one of the things in Florida is you have extraordinary
But you aren’t a big fan of stereotypical pink and green to lighten and brighten a Florida home, right?
light, and it’s light all the time. You need dark colors and dark rooms in climates where it’s cold and you want to be cozy. What I find oppressive in Florida is if you go into a house that’s really dark. I’m working on a house now that’s all dark. One of the first things we’re going to do is paint it all light.
You can do all neutrals, you don’t have to have a bright color. Use pink and neutral, not shocking pink. I think one of the things people tend to do is they put all these (bright) colors together. That’s when you get kind of a cliche room. I just did a room in Florida that is basically a neutral color room and its one bright color is apple green.
I love how you found a 9-foot-long Chesterfield sofa for your screened porch. How do we keep upholstered pieces (that are perfect for napping as you point out) from looking out of place? If you have a loggia in Florida that’s very protected from wind and rain, then you can do upholstery. Though you can find very comfortable furniture (that’s not upholstered). There are so many new things on the market with indoor-outdoor cushions and Sunbrella fabrics. Everybody is making very beautiful acrylic fabric now. You don’t have to have a porch with uncomfortable furniture. I have wicker furniture that’s comfortable because it has lots of cushions. I’m using more acrylic bamboo than real wicker. There are so many new products that look like rattan, but it’s plastic. I have a collection at Ballard. There’s Century Furniture, Frontgate, Janus et Cie. All the really good, high-end outdoor furniture companies realize people don’t want their furniture to fall apart in a few minutes.
At left, chairs painted white with bright upholstery give this dark table a brighter Florida feel in Hobe Sound. Opposite page, a beautiful, comfortable loggia in Palm Beach.
Maybe you have something very plain next to something that’s more complicated. I think it’s so much more interesting than having a suite of furniture. It makes the things stand out. It’s not for everybody. It’s easier for the layperson to go buy everything that looks alike but that’s not as much fun.

Your taste is so classic. How do you maintain that when you work with clients in Florida who may want more of a beachy or relaxed feel? A lot of people come to Florida and maybe they moved from the Northeast or they moved from the Midwest. They think, “I’m moving to Florida, I have to throw out all my furniture.” Do you really? No. Why not bring some of your nice pieces and mix them with wicker or add cotton fabrics to them? You can change the look of things you own by making them seem tropical. For Punta Cana, I slipcovered all the chairs in blue cotton. Keep your mahogany dining room table but put painted chairs with it or wicker chairs. Start introducing more natural things that are a bit more Floridian. Why don’t you get rid of that Oriental rug and put a sisal rug down with your dining room table and mix it up a little bit? Keep a couple pieces of wood furniture and add a painted Swedish cabinet and lighter colors. Use the good things you’ve always owned and love. Don’t feel you have to throw it out and make the cliche house that looks like everything else.
In Point of View, you write: “Enchanting rooms, like fascinating people, are multidimensional. … If you accept the idea that many different tastes can go together you can create rooms that are never boring.” I love this philosophy, but how do you keep from having too many different tastes in one room resulting in too much going on? You can’t have a little bit of everything. I think there’s always a balance. I look at a room and think, “Okay, maybe I’m going to have a more modern cabinet on his wall and I’m going to have a pair of French chairs but my upholstery is going to be simple.” It’s not a tossed salad. It’s about balance.

I have another favorite quote from Point of View: “No matter what the style of your home, it is the personal possessions that make your rooms unique and express your personality. Without the aspect of layering, the most exquisitely furnished rooms can have a commercial, anonymous hotel feel.” You mention layering books, paintings, photographs, objects d’ art and plants. Do you have a rule of thumb that keeps layering your personality from becoming a hodgepodge of your life? It can look like junk or it can be arranged in an interesting way. I’ve often gone into people’s houses and thought, “This looks terrible.” I take it all off (shelves, tables, etc.) and start over. Maybe you collect pottery, well put it all together. Make a still life of some of the things that mean something to you. I have a client who collects Mickey Mouse figures. Do I love them? No. But I’ve figured out how to arrange them in a bookcase. Assemble (your personal items) together so they make a point and they aren’t just scattered all over the place. Find a space where they become a focal point and they become more interesting as a group.
Below, a living room in Palm Beach with tables and chairs that aren’t matching yet work well together.

faces CHISELERS MARKET
When the gloves come off BY AMY SCHERZER PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANDRES LEIVA
A
handful of socialites took off their white gloves in 1959 to scrape and chisel old paint off fireplace tiles, and the rest, quite
literally, is history. Just “a bunch of chiselers,” they called themselves, enlisted by the wife of the president of the University of Tampa to help fix up the aging administration building, which was the former 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel. As they continued to restore the building, they saw themselves more as working in the realm of interior decoration without realizing they were historic preservationists as well.
Nearly six decades later, the campus headquarters is a national historic landmark and the Chiselers have raised $7.6 million to replace flooring, repoint bricks and repair the iconic silver minarets gleaming over the campus. Every step in accordance with the rehabilitation standards of the Secretary of Interior. As the charter Chiselers’ social circle expanded, so did their ambitions, perhaps inspired by another president’s wife, first lady Jackie Kennedy, whose White House projects began to make preservation fashionable. “The early members were just trying to make Plant Hall pretty,” said Judy Rodriguez, past president. “We are in the final stages of replacing all 1,068 windows. . . . only 122 left to repair.” All 22 balconies have been restored with money provided by Chiseler volunteers, about 180 active members and another 50 women who contribute dues only. “People think being a Chiseler looks glamorous but it’s a big time, mandatory commitment,” said Kim Hanna, president and CEO of the Florida chapter of the ALS Association. Since joining in 1998, she has served in just

about every position on the board, and was president in 2005. Hanna is also a former board member of another historic architectural gem, the Tampa Theatre, where she founded their annual movie-themed wine tasting. “Everyone is very social but we’re still a business,” said Hanna. “We’re managing millions of dollars. The university relies on us and we have a responsibility to them.” Club records account for 15,000 volunteer hours a year. New members, called provisionals, are required to work one morning a week for a year to earn active status.

“It’s a ton of work but then we all go out to lunch and have fun,” Hanna said. “Some of my deepest friendships are within the Chiselers. They’re really my anchor.” The turning point, from prettifying to preserving, was a master plan commissioned in 1995, during Rodriguez’ presidency, and later revised in 2001. “That made us aware that we could do so much more by being eligible for local and state grants,” she said. Since 1996, grants totalling $1,689,000 were matched dollar for dollar by selling cookbooks, Christmas ornaments, T-shirts and tote bags. There’s a bi-annual fashion show, and every spring break since 1964, the Chiselers Market sends thousands of bargain hunters swarming to the UT campus. Originally called the Thieves Market “until the name was considered to be improper,” Rodriguez said, the one-day thrift sale was patterned after a church bazaar. Members met in each other’s homes and made handicrafts to sell along with jams, jellies and such. The first one took in $2,850.

Through the years, it gained a reputation as more estate sale than garage sale. Word spread that the well-heeled members donate their own fine china, silver, jewelry, designer clothing and furniture. Some bequeath all their household goods to the Chiselers. Adding a cocktail buffet preview party the night prior has boosted the market’s bottom line since 1997. For twice the price, guests may buy anything that strikes their fancy. Combined proceeds from the two events have reached as much as $250,000. Last year, the Chiselers got a big surprise when termites made an appearance in the Grand Salon. Removing the fireplace mantels and interior walls revealed daisy and herringbone tiles. “The workmen had to go further into the fireplace than they had planned and found them,” Rodriguez said. “They must have been there prior to 1959. “So we’re right back where we started... repairing tiles from the original fireplaces.”

The event raised more than $645,000 to support the museum’s extensive collection of artifacts, photographs and personal stories. FOOD + DRINK ISSUE How is it that food is so utterly diverse in how it’s prepared, served and savored, yet it’s such a common denominator that brings people together? Whether your tastes lean toward an artisanal lamb saddle with black truffle and Sauce Périgourdine, a cold green bean salad or a cupcake from an ATM, you’ll have plenty to enjoy when the next issue is served in June. Expect recipes for cool summer foods, the best plates served by award-winning restaurants and stunning tabletops created by Tampa Bay residents who have a knack for entertaining along with much more. — Katherine Snow Smith
