PUPPY LOVE T

Bay editor Kathy Saunders cradles one of the future Southeastern Guide Dog puppies she helped birth from breeder Lucy’s litter. Photos by Maggie Jewett

hose who know me know that I love dogs. While I grew up with dogs, I didn’t want pets when I had my own family because of the chaos and extra work. That changed when I started volunteering with Southeastern Guide Dogs. My family has been raising future guide dog puppies for seven years, and I was hooked from the moment I met the first woman who received one of our dogs. Yes, we were heartbroken to say goodbye to Sarah when she left us to go to Guide Dog University for formal training, but seeing her guide Dottie Langham from Georgia made every second of the journey worth it. We love Sarah, a black Labrador retriever, but Dottie needs her. And, seeing the bond between the two of them as a working team is life-changing. During this month of love, I want to share a

story of a different kind of puppy love. Two days before Christmas, at 6 a.m., I rushed to Largo to the home of fellow puppy raisers Maggie and John Jewett. One of the puppies they raised, Lucy, is now a breeder for Southeastern. Because of rare circumstances, instead of dropping Lucy at the Palmetto campus to have her second litter, Southeastern set up a nursery in their home for Lucy’s whelping. As area coordinator of the puppy group, I was there to support the Jewetts. Admittedly, my main job was bringing lasagna for the family, but I showed up in time to see the first Labrador puppy born and was able to stay while Lucy birthed six puppies. Four of the potato-sized babies were male and two female. The second puppy out, a black female, wasn’t breathing. But, with the guidance of Southeastern neonatal care technician Beth Davis, we patted

She started moving and squeaking within minutes, although it seemed like hours. It was the happiest moment of my holidays. For two weeks, I visited the puppies and helped with twice-daily weigh-ins to track their progress. When I wasn’t there, I was checking in to see how they were doing, especially the littlest angel, the one we helped revive. They have all been transferred to campus now with their mama, Lucy, and are doing well. In a

couple of weeks, they will go to puppy raisers to begin their journey as potential guide dogs. And, who knows? That little one might even end up in my house. This issue of Bay features love in many forms. We have suggestions for selfie-worthy date spots along with fashions to impress. The Fenway Hotel on the Dunedin waterfront provides the backdrop for our out-on-thetown ensembles. The historic building offers many date-worthy options, from the menu at the chef-driven Hew restaurant to the curated

If you love a romance novel, you’ll enjoy reading the excerpt from a book by Tamara Lush, who has made a career telling stories as a Florida news reporter and now as a romance writer. We also love keepsakes and can’t wait for you to see the selection of memory boxes we found for those treasured love letters or special reminders of the loves of our lives. February marks my one-year anniversary as editor of Bay, and after reporting on charity events planned by unbelievably generous donors, interviewing amazing and inspiring individuals from our community and writing about everything from caviar to Chanel, I can honestly say that I love it!

In addition to films, the theater hosts live events, including comedian Ko Joy on Feb. 29, a performance by Postmodern Jukebox on March 7 and a special screening of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure with special guest Paul Reubens on March 13. As one of the BBC’s 10 most beautiful cinemas in the world, selfie ops abound, with a Mediterranean courtyard filled with old world statues and gargoyles and the ornate theater’s realistic twinkly night sky inside. The best nearby food option is Osteria, a swanky Italian restaurant just a skip up Franklin Street. Opened in 2018 by Top Chef competitor Fabio Viviani, it’s fancier than its name lets on, as an osteria is typically pretty casual. Expect a more elevated experience with lots of influencer types. Standouts are the braised Spanish octopus, Mediterranean salad, squid ink garganelli and ciopinno. Imbibe with Italianinspired specialty cocktails and a vast selection of Italian wines. date: ST. PETERSBURG Take advantage of Tampa Bay’s thriving art scene and take your date to the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. View the special exhibition “Art of the Stage: Picasso to Hockney,” exploring the history of artist collaborations with the theater and ballet. Wander through the encyclopedic permanent collection to see ancient works, Old Masters, Impressionists and contemporary art. Check the museum’s event calendar to time your visit with an interesting lecture or other activity. You’ll want to get a selfie with contemporary art superstar Kehinde Wiley’s large-scale painting Leviathan Zodiac, on display in the Great Hall. Wiley painted the official portrait of President Barack Obama, so the museum’s acquisition of this work is important. If all that art appreciation makes you hungry, look no further for sustenance than the MFA Cafe, which offers brunch on Saturdays and Sundays and serves wine and beer. If the weather’s nice, dine outside and enjoy waterfront views. Walk off your meal with a stroll around picturesque South Straub Park.

Enjoy nature’s nightly show at Pass-a-Grille Beach. Bay photo

Sunsets in Pass-a-Grille are magical. One of the newest and best places to view them is from the rooftop bar at the Dewey, near the southern tip of the island. You can dress comfortably or fancier to impress a date, but you won’t be surrounded by sandy barefoot diners in bathing suit wraps. Part of the new Berkeley Beach Club, the roof is a great place to enjoy a glass of one of the Dewey’s featured wines from coastal regions with seaside access and some of the gulf oysters served raw or roasted with a harissa butter. A good time to snap a date selfie is just before the last sliver of sun hits the horizon. Head down to the dining room of wicker chairs, tall ceilings and walls lined with large photos of the restaurant’s namesake, a border collie owned by one of the owners, Russ Alba. Try a fresh Florida fish entree or something with a Caribbean flair. We suggest the smoked mahi dip, fried chicken sandwich and hanger steak. If the date is going well, the beach is just across the street for a moonlit stroll along the shoreline. THE DEWEY 109 Eighth Ave., St. Pete Beach. It’s like a testosterone competition, Kate.” I grin and look up from rinsing the sink, a roar of motorcycles filling the air. The raspy voice of Bernice, the elderly woman drinking the piña colada, echoes through the empty bar. She’s a regular at Lime and Salt, my mom’s thatched-roof tiki hut, and her butt has warmed that wooden stool since I was a teenager. “Stupid bikers.” She swivels in her seat to glare through the bank of potted palms separating that side of our open-air bar from the parking lot. “Why do they have to keep revving like that? They know the exhaust comes right in here, and we can smell it. Jerks.” She slurps the remnants of her cocktail and pushes the plastic cup toward me. I don’t need to ask if she wants another. The Harley engines sputter and die, and as I mix Bernice’s drink — hand-shaken with coconut cream, pineapple juice and Bacardi light rum, no frozen pre-made sludge for her — a cloud of masculine energy invades the bar like fog over the Gulf of Mexico. I glance up, my muscles tensing. Since returning home to Paradise Beach, I’ve been on edge, awaiting something ominous. It’s probably because of my complicated history here. I both love and loathe this island, and my feelings about it change by the hour. Two bikers strut in, their boots thudding against the wood plank floor. The guys are beefy and wearing leather jackets even in the mild Florida fall weather. They take over a high-top table in the corner, one of only five in the whole place. It’s the one that would have the best view of the beach if it weren’t eight at night.

TAMARA LUSH writes “sexy books for sharp women.” She’s a St. Petersburgbased journalist, formerly with the Tampa Bay Times, which owns Bay, and currently with the Associated Press, where she covers Florida’s west coast and all the intrigue that it brings. But her side hustle might be even more exciting. She has written 12 romance novels set in tropical locations, winning awards and scads of fans. For our love issue, she kindly shared an excerpt from the first novel in her Paradise Beach Series, All I Know, which is about a hunky Marine who asks his old high school crush to marry him — so she can have health insurance. We had to edit out some of the steamier bits, but find out what happens between Damien and Kate by downloading the book wherever e-books are sold. And find more of Lush’s work at tamaralush.com.

I catch the eye of Jane, our raven-haired waitress. She winks and nods. My shoulder muscles ease away from my ears. I’m pouring the piña colada, focusing on not slopping it everywhere like Mom taught me, when I feel a body slipping into the seat next to Bernice. It’s a bartender’s sixth sense: when someone takes a stool and needs a drink. “That’s all it is with men these days,” she adds a few more colorful swear words under her breath. “A testosterone contest.” I slide a glance to her left, straight into the familiar, whiskey-colored eyes of my high school crush. Damien Hastings? Here, in my bar? How did I not notice when he walked in? So much for that sixth sense. I immediately over pour Bernice’s colada and shake my head. My skin tingles and I snicker out of sheer nervousness. “No alcohol abuse, girlie.” Bernice brushes a lock of silver hair off her forehead and lights up a Pall Mall. I finish pouring, then wipe the sides of her drink with a rag, and hand it to her. She takes a big sip. “Don’t tell your mother, but you make a better cocktail.” She tips the cup in my direction. “I’ll keep that between us, Bern.” I’m scrubbing my hands with the dishcloth to conceal them from visibly shaking when I turn to the man candy on the other side of the bar. “Well. Damien Hastings. It’s been a long time.” He grins, showing straight, white teeth. He always had a gorgeous, boy-band smile, almost too pretty and sweet for a guy. But when did he get so big and muscular? I guess the Marines did that. Over the years, I’ve often wondered where Damien ended up, what he looked like, if he remembered me at all. Now I know.

HOW SWEET IT IS BY KATHY SAUNDERS • PHOTOS BY SCOTT KEELER eveloper Fred Bullard first noticed Karol Kelly in 1968 as she was unloading boxes of shoes from her car in the parking lot of the Tampa complex where they both lived. And, yes, he used the eye-rolling “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” pickup line to introduce himself. As an on-air weather forecaster for the local ABC television station, WLCY, Kelly was used to being recognized and figured Bullard was a viewer. He wasn’t, he allowed. “I just thought she was pretty.” This year, the couple will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with the opening of a special gift Bullard presented to his bride: a new hotel bearing her name. “It’s going to be the best little hotel in Tampa Bay,” said Bullard, who developed Feather Sound where the hotel is located, as well as hotels, resorts, restaurants and apartment buildings throughout the state. The Karol, at 2685 Ulmerton Road, is the first Marriott Tribute hotel in Pinellas County, with 123 rooms, including a presidential suite, a mahogany paneled bar modeled after Manhattan’s famed Polo Club and a rooftop bar with views of Tampa Bay. We joined them for lunch recently at their favorite table at their favorite restaurant, Bascom’s Chop House, which Bullard opened in 2001. He remembered every detail of their first date. “I was pulling into the parking lot of my favorite Italian restaurant in Tampa and I turned to her and said, ‘What’s your favorite restaurant?’ ” When Kelly said she loved Bern’s Steak House, “I

backed the car up and turned around and drove to Bern’s,” Bullard said. “She ordered the biggest steak they had and she did a good job with that.” As they were leaving, he asked about dessert “and she said she would love dessert. She ate a big slice of banana cream pie and asked to take one home, too,” he said. Kelly said she didn’t eat out much in those days and sometimes didn’t eat all day at work. “So when someone was treating me, I enjoyed myself,” she said. Her openness was endearing to Bullard. “When I got to know her I saw her depth and that was killer — she had all of it,” he said. The couple married at Peace Presbyterian Church in downtown Clearwater on December 19, 1970. Along with his four children from a previous marriage, they added three sons. Today, they have 17 grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way. Karol Bullard, 75, started her on-air career at a radio station in Zephyrhills, where she began after spending a year at Ohio State University. Her parents bought the station and invited her to move to Florida and enroll at the University of South Florida for the remainder of her college education. “At the radio station I did everything,” she said. “I sold advertising, I was on the air, I did the books and I cleaned the floors.” She moved to television a few years later, taking over the weather when former forecaster Dick Crippen moved to the sports desk. Her television career ended when she became pregnant with their first child in 1972. “At that time you couldn’t be pregnant and be on the air,” she said. She has remained active, heading numerous community charity

events and serving on boards of organizations that support the causes she is most passionate about. She works tirelessly on events to raise money for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast, Operation Par Inc., the American Red Cross and the Queen of Hearts Ball, which benefits the American Heart Association. The hotel, just down the street from Bascom’s, is a passion they share. Karol has helped with designs, decorating and working with the chefs at the two restaurants: K Club Bar & Bistro and Vantage, the rooftop bar with a view of Feather Sound and Carillon. Some of the hotel designs have her initials intertwined in the decor. While working together has its challenges, the Bullards have two ways of dealing with that stress: They laugh and they spend time apart when necessary. “You have to have a sense of humor if you are married this long,” Karol said, adding, “And we always have our own bathrooms — we like our privacy.” As the hotel opening approached, the Bullards were making frequent visits to the site and tweaking artwork and furnishings.

The Bullards’ new hotel, the Karol, is located in Feather Sound.

One final touch, from their 49th anniversary, is a neon sign Karol had made with the words “Don’t I Know You From Somewhere?” It will hang in the rooftop bar.

FACE S: GEORGE SME T ZER

THE PERFECT

MATCH BY KATHY SAUNDERS

O

nce a groom kissed him instead of the bride. Another time, he left the wedding venue still holding the rings for the bride and groom. George Smetzer, 59, has no shortage of uplifting and unusual experiences after working as a marriage officiant for the past 30 years. By day, he works for Kobie Marketing, handling loyalty program clients. On weekends and evenings, he officiates with his company Blissful Vibes and Vows. We asked him for a few details about his experiences and for a little advice to couples planning their own nuptials. Tell us about your background. I grew up in Clearwater. We moved here from Kansas City and I went to Clearwater High School. I went to college in Illinois ... Lincoln Christian University. I completed my schooling there and shoveled snow twice and decided it was time to go back to Florida. How did you get into the wedding business? I did some weddings way back then but I changed careers. What drew me back was trade show marketing for various companies. I really enjoy doing live exhibit presentations. I was doing a trade show presentation when the pastor of my church saw and heard me, and he thought I would be a good officiant to help with his wedding overflow. It was Pastor Curt Swan of First Christian Church of Dunedin, who has been my best friend for 50 years as well. How do you book your weddings? The opportunities first came about through a beach wedding company where Curt (Swan) was their primary officiant and he asked me to join him. About 2013 ... I became a lead officiant for a different company, Florida Gulf Beach Weddings, located here in St. Petersburg. Then, as I’ve met wedding guests, networked and spoken with friends and co-workers, I have been able to book many weddings for my own business. I would say I have officiated in the range of about 1,500 ceremonies. Sometimes it’s as many as four or five a week, and it will be any day of the week. Often it will be multiples on weekends. What do your services cost? I ask for approximately $200 for a ceremony and I request a deposit of half. The final balance can be more or less than the remaining $100, based on the couple’s feelings, whether I provided over and above, or less than what they might have wanted. I almost always receive more than the $200 fee.

George Smetzer, who grew up in Clearwater, marries Jessica and Matthew Raynal at the Wishing Well Barn in Plant City. Photo courtesy of Melissa Lauren Images Do you write the vows or do most couples write their own? I give couples three options. The hardest option is, “Do you plan on writing and speaking your own vows to one another?” Most of my couples answer right away with “Absolutely not.” Option number two would be if they choose to repeat short phrases after me. The easiest option of all is that I ask a series of short questions and they simply answer one time with the words “I do.” Most grooms prefer that short and not-so-sweet option. But when my couples write and speak their own vows, it’s very touching, and I actually poll the audience and ask if we can break the rules and go ahead and let them kiss then because it’s such a touching moment. I have yet to hear the word “no.” Do you have a most memorable wedding? Yes, one I will never forget. I usually joke that the groom’s only job is to show up — sober. I was assured by this one bride there was no concern. But, quite the opposite happened and the ceremony was a bit sloppy. We powered through it and I pronounced them husband and wife and said, “You may kiss your bride.” He kissed me instead. I quickly redirected his affection and re-pronounced them “husband and that wife.” Is there anything you are looking forward to in the near future? I anticipate vow renewal ceremonies will continue to grow in popularity for those celebrating decades of marriage. But what I have yet to do is officiate a wedding where the bride or groom has been born in the year 2000 or after. It should have already happened, but that will be what officially makes me “seasoned.” George Smetzer can be reached at (727) 776-0507, blissfulvibesandvows.com or on Facebook.

including the University of South Florida Neighborhood News Bureau, The Weekly Challenger and the African American Heritage Association to collect oral histories, photographs and other archival material from longtime St. Petersburg residents. The local residents brought their personal recollections and mementos to be photographed for the project. “We are witnessing the narrative of our history being corrected to reflect more truth and inclusion,” said Boyzell Hosey, the Times’ deputy editor for photography and multimedia. “Digging into our archives and reading mid-20th century accounts was shocking because so many stories went untold,” said John Pendygraft, an award-winning photojournalist for the Times who began revisiting St. Petersburg history before the idea of a preservation drive was born. We’re excited to share some of the portraits of community residents who shared intimate memories and stories about St. Petersburg’s African American heritage.

(Left) Lynette Hardy, 70, who was born and raised in St. Petersburg, holds a model machine used by her grandfather to teach people how to vote during voting registration drives. “My grandfather was an activist here in St. Petersburg and he would go around getting people registered to vote and also show them how to vote,” she explained. “But he would show them how to pull down the levers of all the people he wanted them to vote for!”

Carolyn Hobbs, 80, has lived a life of song. She sang with the 1957 Gibbs High School St. Cecilia Choir, then went to Howard University on a scholarship and majored in music, focusing on opera. Today she and lifelong friends still sing together with the Alumni Singers of St. Petersburg. Hobbs holds a photo of her great-grandparents.

Charles Ray and Janice Ayer Jackson hold a 1952 picture of their Tom Thumb wedding, a pageant where children act out a marriage ceremony. The picture was taken when they were classmates at Happy Workers day care. “There was a preacher. He placed around us a chain, if you will, with a lock,” Ayer Jackson explained. “It was a full procession ... I mean it was the whole nine yards, elaborate,” Ray added.

Andrew Williams Jr., 66, holds a photo of his father on an elephant during a promotional event at Webb’s City, a one-stop drugstore, in the 1940s. Webb’s City was touted as “the World’s Most Unusual Drug Store.” “Webb’s City, wow that was the place. You could buy anything there, you could get your hair cut, you could get anything. It was really something,” he said.

Donna McRae holds a photo that includes her late husband, Dr. Paul McRae, who passed away on Sept. 13, 2019. Dr. McRae, who was raised in the Jordan Park housing project, rose to become the first black chief of staff at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. The photo was taken in the early 1950s and is of a Tom Thumb wedding, a pageant where children act out a marriage ceremony. “I was looking through all kinds of pictures, trying to find things for the memorial service we had and I ran across this picture. My husband was the preacher. He looks like he’s about 6 years old here.”

Dr. Basha Jordan Jr., the grandson of Elder Jordan, holds a picture of Elder Jordan Sr. and his wife, Mary Frances. Elder Jordan was born a slave around 1850 and came to St. Petersburg in 1901. Elder Jordan Sr. went on to become a successful entrepreneur, pioneering developer and philanthropist. Both Jordan Park Housing Complex and Jordan Elementary were named in his honor.

Louis Williams, 60, joked, “Most people in the city know me as Louis ‘B’... full of bull.” Williams is a member of the Jordan Park Improvement Association and was one of the original residents when Jordan Park first opened. “My thing is, the people who are in here don’t appreciate it like we did. When we moved in here, this was like our condos. Everybody wanted to get in here. Everybody had grass. We had hot and cold running water. We had bathtubs. We had fruit trees in the backyard. It was something everyone was proud of and hopeful. But now it just doesn’t seem as though ... well, I won’t only say the people in Jordan Park ... people in this world just don’t have that appreciation of the things they have.”

Bonita Williams, 55, holds a St. Petersburg Times article from April 6, 1978, that describes her as “the first black girl ever on the Northeast tennis team.”

Lolita Brown, 71, was born at Mercy Hospital and raised in south St. Petersburg. She is holding a photo of herself as a child with her mother. Growing up, she lived behind the Manhattan Casino. “All the great jazz players, all the great actors and comedians came at some point in their careers to the Manhattan Casino. I could hear, because there was no air conditioning then, I could hear the music at night.” Her roots run deep in her community. “l’ll have to tell you this ... my mom was the first African American secretary in Pinellas County, and she worked at Gibbs High School. She had a degree from Clark University, but coming home she could only get a job as a secretary. She did that, and then she was able to get a teaching job,” Brown said. “We’re talking the 1940s, when everything was very segregated, and so to get a job it would have to probably have to be at a black institution, which would have been Gibbs High. The neighborhood back then was one big family in the sense that everybody looked out for you. Your parents could let you play outside and they didn’t have to worry, because if a neighbor saw you doing something, hey — that was it,” she laughed.

Nicole Persley, 48, grew up in Nokesville, Va. “My African American heritage was hidden from me growing up,” she said. When she discovered her heritage, she started researching family roots and discovered amazing ancestors she didn’t even know she had. “This is the history book that shed light on the secret I didn’t know about until I was in my 20s,” she said. “What I’m doing, I’m trying to rewrite history to set the record straight.”

Adrienne Reddick, 55, a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, grew up in the neighborhood around 22nd Street and 17th Avenue S. She has a proud connection to St. Petersburg’s African American history: Her uncle, Horace Nero, was one of the Courageous 12, a group of St. Petersburg police officers who fought to get equal pay and job rights for black officers. The picture she is holding is from a Black Nurses association gala. Her aunt, Mattie Bennett, was the first black nurse at Bayfront Hospital.

St. Petersburg Debutante Club Presentation Ball Sixteen college-age women were presented as debutantes at the annual black-tie Presentation Ball held at the Coliseum. The newest members of the St. Petersburg Debutante Club wore formal white gowns and carried red and pink roses as they were escorted by their fathers around the perimeter of the venue. The procession featured songs selected by each debutante, and the music ranged from Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville to Pachelbel’s Canon in D. At the ball, a club tradition since the 1930s, the new debutantes were joined on the dance floor by former debutantes as well as friends and family members. A highlight of the evening was the recognition of four generations of debutantes from the same family. Great-grandmother Betty Dixon Allen, a debutante from 1941, was joined by grandmother Gail Allen Rogers, a 1966 debutante, Shelley Rogers Cunningham, a debutante in 1989, and 2019 debutantes Abbie Cunningham and Alexandra Rogers. This year, longtime announcer, former St. Petersburg Mayor Bob Ulrich, passed the honor to Mark Wilson of WTVT-FOX 13.

Debutante Club of Clearwater Debutante Courtier Ball College sophomores from northern Pinellas County were presented at the recent Debutante Courtier Ball at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The women were welcomed into the Debutante Club of Clearwater, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The debutante season began in May and ended with the ball in December. The ball, chaired by Ela Landegger and Beth McMullen, included the presentation of debutantes, dinner and dancing to the 12-piece band DeLeon. The evening kicked off with a recognition of former Clearwater and Carlouel debutantes and marshals in attendance at the ball. The debutantes were accompanied at official events throughout the season by their marshals: Lucas Gelep, Chase Burwell, Trevor Gardella, Max Rizzo, Duncan Hayslett, Jackson St. Louis, Nicholas Amaro, Connor Flaharty and James Gelep. A new addition to the program this year was the invitation to members of the Clearwater Junior Cotillion to serve as attendants to the debutantes. The seventh- and eighth-grade attendants were: Grace Redmond, Madelyn Shimkus, Ashley McNay, Cecilia Girgenti, Kathryn Hayslett, Katelyn Berthy, Isabella Kiesel, Claudia Quick and Anna Loope. Q& A

before we go MARY K & JOHN WILSON Both have been in front of audiences for the past 50 years and have helped raise thousands of dollars for Tampa Bay charities as arts supporters and performers. Both recently retired from public life — Mary K as a church musician, teacher, voice technician and performer and John as a three-time Emmy-winning news anchor. In the 38 years they have lived in St. Petersburg, they have been singing together at fundraising events, including with the Florida Orchestra and the annual New York Yankees/Steinbrenner Annual Holiday Concerts for young people. All three of their sons share the same passion for the arts. Son Paul is an actor and singer and president of Wilson Media. Mark took John’s chair at the anchor desk at WTVT-FOX 13 when his father retired and also leads the Wilson Van band. Patrick is a Tony- and Golden Globenominated actor and singer. This Valentine’s Day, Mary K and John will be exchanging cards, flowers, kisses and maybe a few love songs. Married for 53 years, we asked them to share some of their loves with our readers. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY MEAL OR A SPECIALTY DISH THAT EITHER OF YOU LIKES TO PREPARE? Mary K: Brunch for family and friends. I am a Southern cook and love to create dishes with eggs, veggies, meats and always prepare some kind of yummy grits dish. John: I don’t cook, so whatever Mary K cooks! I like her corn bread. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG? Mary K: Classical would be Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim. Nonclassical would be Webber’s Think of Me. John: If Ever I Would Leave You from Camelot. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST DATE? Mary K: I was singing the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors and invited John as my guest for the cast party. That was 54 years ago. John: Our first date — even though we went to college together. We had dinner at a friend’s home and played mah-jongg and ended up singing around the piano. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE? Mary K: Gone With the Wind and any movie Patrick or Paul might be in. John: Phantom of the Opera. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO MARRIED COUPLES? Mary K: Remember marriage is a partnership. Communication, consideration, compromise and humor are important, and never, ever go to bed angry with each other. John: Don’t take everything so seriously, especially criticism. 78 / bay
