IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN

Embrace summer in outfits that are at home at the beach or out on the town.

FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN Hurricane season is here again, and I’ll never forget what happened in August 1985. At the time, there was a day gambling cruise out of Tampa, and while my mother was visiting from New York, she and I decided to take it. The weather was fine when we boarded that morning, although a brisk breeze sprang up in midafternoon. By the time I stepped out on deck at 6 p.m., the wind was blowing so hard it ripped the sunglasses right off my face. Hurricane Elena had been born. We made it safely back to port, but at 11 that night police came through our Shore Acres neighborhood in St. Petersburg ordering a mandatory evacuation. As a reporter, I needed to remain in town. My husband, 6-year-old son Steve and mother headed for what would be a multiday stay at my aunt’s house in Sarasota. Their departure was so hasty they forget to take any shoes for Steve. Elena built to a Category 3 hurricane with 125 mph winds, but spun around in the gulf for two days and never came closer than 50 miles to Tampa Bay. Yet the waters rose so high that they flooded thousands of homes, including most of those in our neighborhood. We were spared only because our house was a few inches higher.

Forcing what was then the nation’s largest peacetime evacuation, Elena ultimately killed nine people and caused $1.3 billion in damages in six states. Today, a similar hurricane would be far more devastating, which is why I’m stocking up on hurricane supplies this weekend — and hoping we never need them.

They’re available year-round, thanks to new strains developed by the University of Florida that thrive in the state’s mild winters. And they’re versatile, easy to toss onto cereal, bake into delicious goodies or mix with other berries for tall, cool drinks. Whether planning a Fourth of July party or just relaxing by the pool on a lazy summer day, you’re sure to enjoy these tasty treats based on recipes from Wish Farms, one of Florida’s leading berry growers.

here’s something that Jennifer Beltz wants you to know about the law firm, Beltz & Beltz: The attorneys of the firm have deep roots in this community. They grew up in Pinellas County, attended local schools, and they proudly call the area home. They care deeply about this community, and to a person, they’re hands-on. Their cases are all treated with the same close attention. In most interactions you will speak to an attorney; you will not be routinely routed to clerks or assistants. Furthermore, at the outset, the firm will evaluate your case for free. From day one they have always promised their clients that they “Only pay if we win.” They’ll never deviate from that policy.

Jennifer muses that between the three attorneys at her firm, there are a combined 80 years of experience handling personal injury claims. The goal is to recover the financial compensation needed to pay for

14 / bay

medical expenses, lost income and funds to provide for the injuries and suffering that the client will experience throughout his or her life. The firm has successfully represented individuals in automobile accidents, nursing home abuse and neglect cases, medical malpractice, slip and fall, and more. The firm does sue drunk drivers. Areas of practice at Beltz & Beltz include auto, bicycle, motorcycle, ride-share and pedestrian accidents; nursing home abuse; dog bites or attacks; medical malpractice; negligent security claims; product liability; and estate planning. Additionally, because people don’t always fully understand the exact provisions and exclusions of their auto insurance policy, Beltz & Beltz will review your policy for free, as a public service, to make sure you are paying for coverage that is appropriate for you, and that nothing you need is missing.

In case you didn’t know … The American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys has recognized the exceptional performance of Jennifer Beltz as one of the 10 Best Personal Injury Attorneys for Client Satisfaction. Plus, the Million Dollar Advocates Forum requires that the attorney has collected a minimum of $1 million for a client, and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum requires that the attorney has collected a minimum of $2 million for a client. Over 20 years ago, Jennifer Beltz and her father and law partner Larry D. Beltz, each, individually, met the requirements for membership in both the Million Dollar and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocate forums. Less than 1 percent of lawyers in the United States are members of these forums. To contact Beltz & Beltz, call the firm at (727) 866-4586. They are available 24/7 for new clients.

SUNSET SPECIAL BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN

The Sunset Park Isles home is sleek inside and out. 18 / bay

Colorado couple moving to the Tampa Bay area did a careful search for the perfect spot to build a new waterfront home. As boaters, they wanted a place with a view but sheltered from the direct pounding of waves. They finally found it — on the southwest tip of San Miguel Point in Tampa’s Sunset Park Isles. • Now the couple is moving again, and the house, built just four years ago, is on the market for $11.7 million. It has the kind of amenities expected at that price: a pool, a putting green, an outdoor kitchen, a Zen garden and, of course, a stunning view of Tampa Bay. But it also epitomizes two recent trends in the area’s torrid luxury real estate market.

The three-story South Tampa home, which is listed at $11.7 million, has a dock, davits ,a pool, putting green and attached guesthouse with its own kitchen. It has five bedrooms and 6 ½ bathrooms. Photos courtesy of Tony Sica

The home is designed in an airy, contemporary style popular in California.

Several balconies and patios, and a pool, face the water. bay / 19

A private meditation garden is among the amenities at the South Tampa property.

The boater will be especially at home here.

20 / bay

The kitchen echoes the home’s modern look — and water views.

With several balconies and patios facing the water, the threestory house is designed in an airy, contemporary style popular in California. More and more of the high-end homes being built in Tampa, St. Petersburg and along the Pinellas beaches are eschewing the traditional bungalow and Mediterranean styles for a sleeker look. “Florida has always emulated California but we’ve always been a few years behind,” said Jeff Shelton of Compass Realty. “Now, because Tampa is more of an international city, we are starting to see more of what I call California modern, with our wealthy now having living and entertainment spaces flow seamlessly throughout.”

Soak in the view as you soak in one of the tubs.

In another trend, fueled by Florida’s low taxes, pro-business government and sunny climate, the state is drawing thousands like the Colorado couple from other parts of the country. Zillow says Tampa is the third most popular choice for people considering a move, and it predicts the bay area will be the nation’s hottest housing market this year. Forbes has called Tampa the top emerging tech city in the nation. “Tampa has really become the new tech capital and we’re seeing so many entrepreneurs for tech businesses,” said Shelton, who listed the house with fellow agent Mike Hughes. “Most buyers in this price range come from outside areas.” Another luxurious home the two sold this year had multiple offers, including ones from California, Chicago and Seattle. The bay area’s soaring popularity has had a predictable effect on prices, including for high-end homes. In 2015, not a single house in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties sold for more than $5 million. In just the first three months of this year, 12 homes sold for more than that amount.

A wine bar is perfect for entertaining.

“There continues to be a strong market for luxury homes in our area,” said Jennifer Zales, a Coldwell Banker agent. “I am working with many buyers from the Northeast, Chicago, California and even the east coast of Florida who are buying in Tampa Bay. Most recently, I’ve had an influx of Canadian buyers who are back and buying on the beaches.” In the first quarter of 2022, Zales closed $45 million worth of residential real estate. Among the buyers were transplants from New York, Boston, Connecticut, New Jersey and South Florida. Despite the skyrocketing prices, “Tampa Bay represents a tremendous value when compared to the more expensive markets such as Miami, Naples and even Sarasota,” Zales said. As for the sellers of this Sunset Park Isles home, they’re not going far — they’re purportedly building a new home on the gulf beaches.

The sitting area off one of the bedrooms is filled with natural light.

Kristin Cummings and Erika Johnson founded St. Pete Slumber Company.

SWEET DREAMS BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN Kristin Cummings and Erika Johnson met several years ago, when their kids took lessons at the same swim club. The two young mothers quickly became fast friends, their families partying together, vacationing together. And now they’re in business together. • Last year, Cummings and Johnson started St. Pete Slumber Company, which arranges themed slumber parties complete with colorful tents, decorative pillows, cascading balloons and other accoutrements. Business has been so good they’ve started offering photo sessions and celebratory yard cards. • “We had slumber parties when we were kids,” Cummings said, “but not like this.”

A St. Petersburg native, Cummings is a speech language pathologist and dance teacher with two kids. Johnson, originally from Chicago, is a photographer who home-schools her son and daughter. A few years ago, a Pinterest post of a teepee over a bed sparked the idea of using tentlike structures for slumber parties. “We thought this would be something really fun that we would all be able to take part in because of our separate skills — Erika being a photographer, her husband a carpenter,” Cummings said. The pandemic stalled plans until last year, when she and Johnson noticed that someone on Facebook was selling tent frames and covers, air mattresses and party accessories. Taking it as a sign that it would be a perfect time to start their own business, they bought the entire lot. Next steps were hiring a web designer, forming a limited liability company and buying extra fabric to make their own tent covers. Johnson took photos for advertising purposes. St. Pete Slumber Company launched during the holiday season with a Grinchthemed party for nine kids. “It was someone we knew,” Cummings said, “so we felt comfortable asking her for input and getting feedback on what they thought was great and what it might be nice to see in the future.” Since then, they’ve staged parties throughout the bay area, including in Temple Terrace and Palmetto. Themes have included Parisian with a toy poodle and miniature Eiffel Tower, ice cream social, video gaming and a campsite with camouflage tents, army hats and log-shaped pillows. Coming up are parties with “lacey boho” and tropical themes.

This slumber party had a Parisian accent.

“Erika and Kristin are amazing. They took care of every little detail (even including a pre-filled pinata).” “Our daughter and her friends were so thankful for this experience and cannot wait for the next special sleepover.” Depending on the number of tents and air mattresses, it takes Johnson and Cummings at least an hour to set up. They can provide a photo booth with appropriate backdrop (Johnson takes the photos) and recently bought yard cards that can spell out a name and birthday greetings. The women return the next day to pack up. Most of the parties so far have been for girls ages 6 to 11, but Cummings and Johnson set up a “kids corner” at a wedding to keep two young boys occupied during the lengthy nuptial festivities. St. Pete Slumber provided gift baskets with toy dinosaurs, trays on which the boys could play games and do arts and crafts, and soft blankets to curl up on when they got tired. “We had a wedding planner that reached out to us,” Cummings said. “She felt something was kind of missing from her business to entertain kids so she was very much in our corner and referring us to a lot of brides.” Cummings and Johnson see “kids corners” becoming a significant part of their business.

Reviews posted on Instagram have been glowing:

St. Pete Slumber has marketed itself by donating gift baskets to school auctions and to the Mike Alstott Family Foundation, a nonprofit that helps children and families. And, of course, word-of-mouth advertising from friends and happy clients has played a big part.

“Our girls had the best sleepover ever!”

“It’s been super cool to see the growth of it,” Johnson said.

Inn-spiring North Carolina BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN When the temperature is in the 90s and the humidity is almost as high, it’s no wonder so many Floridians head to the North Carolina mountains, known for their scenic lakes, waterfalls and spectacular views — and, of course, that cool, crisp air. The region also has an abundance of charming inns, perfect for a getaway or a place to stay while searching for a mountain home. Here are some favorites. This is the Old Edwards Inn in downtown Highlands, one of several buildings throughout the North Carolina town that collectively are known as Old Edwards Inn & Spa. Inn on Biltmore Estate, Asheville Built by George Washington Vanderbilt in the late 1800s, the 250-room Biltmore House is the country’s largest and best known private residence. You can’t stay there, but you can get a taste of Gilded Age opulence at the nearby Inn on Biltmore Estate. Opened in 2001, the 210-room inn offers sweeping mountain views, including from tables in the Forbes four-star rated dining room, set with china, crystal and white linen tablecloths. Amenities include 24-hour room service, a day spa, a library lounge, a fitness center and a heated outdoor pool. The “Morning at Biltmore” package gives inn guests special access to Biltmore House before it opens to the public, including an organ loft view not seen on other tours. 1 Lodge St., Asheville. biltmore.com.

This is the Lodge at Old Edwards, one of several buildings that make up Old Edwards Inn in Highlands. A Palm Beach couple bought the old Edwards Hotel and restaurant in 2001 and went on to buy the lodge and a golf course and add other amenities for a total investment of more than $55 million. Old Edwards Inn, Highlands Part of the Relais & Chateaux group of luxurious hotels worldwide, Old Edwards Inn & Spa is often cited as one of the country’s top resorts. The 68-room hotel, which consists of a historic inn and other buildings spread throughout Highlands, has a pool, a spa, a golf course and restaurants. Known for its upscale dining and shopping, the town itself was founded in 1875 by two Kansas developers. As the story goes, they drew lines on a map from Chicago to Savannah, Ga., and from New York City to New Orleans, thinking that the place where these met would become a commercial crossroads. Highlands draws its name from its 4,118-foot elevation, giving it among the coolest summer temperatures in the South. 445 Main St., Highlands. oldedwardshospitality.com.

Greystone Inn, Lake Toxaway

The Greystone Inn is on Lake Toxaway. Its scenic location drew notables like the Fords, Edisons and Rockefellers in the early 1900s. Photo courtesy of the Greystone Inn

Lake Toxaway is North Carolina’s largest privately owned lake, lined by some of the most expensive homes in western North Carolina. Fortunately, those who don’t live along its shores can enjoy the man-made lake by taking boat rides on the Miss Lucy or dining, staying or doing both at the historic Greystone Inn. The inn, originally the vacation home of Savannah, Ga., socialite Lucy Armstrong, escaped a disastrous flood in 1916 that caused the Toxaway dam to burst and drained the lake. In 1961, the dam was repaired, the lake waters restored, and after Armstrong’s death, the property opened in 1985 as a luxury inn. The recipient of a number of “best” awards, the resort has a spa, tennis courts, a lakeside restaurant and other amenities. 220 Greystone Lane, Lake Toxaway. greystoneinn.com.

Mast Farm Inn, Valle Crucis The roots of the Mast Farm Inn go back to 1792, when Joseph Mast walked from Pennsylvania and settled in what is now Valle Crucis, near Boone. His family raised crops and livestock, but starting in 1900 the property also began operating as an inn. Today the main house has seven rooms, all individually decorated, and there are four cottages, including the Loom House, thought to be the oldest habitable log cabin in North Carolina. (It was here in the early 1900s that Josephine Mast wove exquisite rugs and spreads, some of which are in the Smithsonian.) Guests at the inn enjoy farm-to-table breakfasts and homemade baked goods in the afternoon. The inn is also known for its gardens, at their peak from June to September. Though not connected to the inn, the Mast General Stores in Boone, Asheville and other Southern cities are worth a visit for their eclectic array of items from candy to clothing to those gag gifts we loved as kids. 2543 Broadstone Road, Valle Crucis. themastfarminn.com. 50 / bay

The Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant is on the site of the original inn, which opened in 1892 and served as the first stage coach stop in North Carolina’s Chimney Rock area. The current inn was built in the late 1990s. Photo courtesy of the Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant

Esmeralda Inn, Chimney Rock The Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant blends in so well with its wooded surroundings that it would be easy to miss it if it weren’t for the sign. Set slightly back from U.S. 64, the rustic inn and cabins are just a short distance from two of the area’s most popular attractions: Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. The current inn, rebuilt twice after fires, contains flooring donated from the gymnasium of the nearby set where parts of Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were filmed. In earlier years, Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks, Gloria Swanson and other movie stars used the Esmeralda as a hideout. The inn has an outdoor hot tub, and breakfast is included in the room rate. 901 Main St., Chimney Rock. info@theesmeralda.com.

ENJOY YOUR STAY Lou Plasencia is founder and CEO of The Plasencia Group, a hospitality industry consulting firm based in Tampa. Photo courtesy of The Plasencia Group

P

lan on spending time in hotels this summer? Lou Plasencia knows better than most how hotels have changed during the pandemic. CEO of Tampa’s The Plasencia Group, he deals with all aspects of the hospitality industry, from consulting and development to investment and sales. His company recently arranged the $110 million sale of two Tampa hotels

and one in Jacksonville. Plasencia was just 5 in 1961 when his family left Cuba for Tampa, where his father and uncle were in the cigar business. He got a degree in higher education and spent time in academia until a college friend who worked for Hyatt Hotels “let it slip what he was making,” Plasencia recalls. “I was making about a third of what he was and I thought, ‘Maybe I’m in the wrong business.’ ” He spent several years working for Hyatt, then started the hospitality division of a commercial real estate firm before opening his own company in 1993. Today it has about 20 full-time employees and offices throughout the country. Plasencia recently spoke with Bay. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. — Susan Taylor Martin

Has the hotel industry recovered from the pandemic? I would say it’s a tale of two cities. Seattle, Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, Boston, Washington, D.C., New York City — those markets that have a heavy concentration (of unionized workers) and those that are heavily reliant on big conventions are really struggling. Then you’ve got other markets where the performance has been astonishing, the so-called leisure and resort markets. Florida is by far the most successful market not only in the country but pretty much in the whole world. How is that affecting room rates? (In Florida), average daily rates are in excess of 25 to 30 percent over 2019 at most hotels. The closer you book to your dates, the higher the rate and you stand a chance of not finding a room. There’s a tremendous amount of pent-up demand, people are tired of COVID, they’ve saved a lot of money and they’re looking to break out. (In still struggling areas), you will find rooms at very good rates. What you’ll also find is that a lot of restaurants and a lot of venues that were there in 2019 are still closed today and will be permanently closed. Can you get better rates by dealing with third-party companies like Expedia? You are much better off calling the hotel directly. Don’t hit 1 for reservations, hit 0 and ask for the front desk. The front desk clerk is going to be at the hotel and he or she is going to know that property better than a reservation agent at a call center in Omaha. They can tell you what the best rooms are, what the best rates are. If you move your dates by a day or two, you might get a better rate. Check in on Tuesday and depart on Friday. Any other tips? Talk to the concierge and ask for assistance in booking visits to museums or theme parks. (Full-service) hotels typically have a relationship with local amenities or attractions and they may be able to offer you a package deal that includes hotel, transportation and a daily ticket at an attraction, maybe a 20 to 30 percent discount because of the relationships a concierge has. A lot of times the hotel itself has phenomenal food and beverage service and can create a really neat experience for an anniversary or a family reunion. They can put it all together for you — get the charter boat, the picnic basket, schedule the kayaks because they know the local providers.

on the way the hospitality industry operates today, and some of those changes in my opinion will be permanent. Don’t expect your room to be cleaned every day. A lot of hotels can’t find the staff. The housekeeper working at Marriott or Hilton two years ago is probably working at Amazon today. You are going to find the in-room dining service is not being offered anymore. At a lot of properties, it’s going to take longer to get a drink at poolside because there are fewer employees. You’re going to find mobile keys to be the norm. You can completely bypass front-desk check-in by using your mobile phone. Pre-pandemic, there was a big move toward boutique-type hotels even by the big chains like Marriott. Has that continued? It not only continued but will expand. The attraction right now is the lifestyle or boutique hotel with its own individual character. There was a time when people were looking for consistency and continuity — if I’m traveling to four different cities I’m going to stay at a Marriott or Hilton and know that the alarm clock is always going to be on the right. People now are looking for different experiences. When they go back home they want to talk about the experience they had. They’re not necessarily looking to have dinner every night at the hotel but doing the tasting menu at Rooster & the Till (in Tampa) or going to Gulfport and seeing old-style Florida in the middle of a huge urban market. You spend a lot of time in hotels. Any favorites? One of my all-time favorites is the Villa Magna in Madrid. It’s a grand old hotel and the staff has been there forever. In the U.S., the Pendry hotel in Baltimore is a really tremendous experience. It’s a very well-designed, warm, inviting place. And the Vinoy in downtown St. Pete. The renovation is well underway but what appeals to me is the fact it sits on the water and in five minutes you can hit wine bars, restaurants, museums. How would describe the ultimate hotel stay? People are looking for different experiences that appeal to all the senses — music, food, scents, artwork — so we’re trying to touch every sense as you walk into a hotel. The one sense most critical is — do you feel you it’s home? Do you feel like you never want to leave? That’s really what we’re trying to create in this industry today.

What changes will you see in hotels? COVID clearly has had an impact

Tampa Bay Times Pulitzer Prize Celebration The Tampa newsroom of the Tampa Bay Times erupted in cheers, applause and high-fives as staff writers Corey G. Johnson, Rebecca Woolington and Eli Murray learned they had won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting for “Poisoned,” their stories exposing dangers at a local lead smelter. The celebration later moved to St. Petersburg’s Poynter Institute, the Times’ parent organization, where more staffers joined in to sip champagne in recognition of the paper’s 14th Pulitzer, journalism’s highest honor. — Susan Taylor Martin

Tampa Museum of Art Pride & Passion A bump of burlesque, the dazzle of drag, a rockin’ runway — everyone was invited to “strike a pose” and celebrate inclusivity and self-expression at Pride & Passion, the LGBTQ+ community’s annual anything/everything goes benefit for the Tampa Museum of Art. Madonna, Marilyn Monroe and other glamorous Hollywood icons inspired co-chairpersons Marvin Meeks and Lillian Chor Florin’s “Vogue” theme April 9. Chandeliers shimmered over terrace lounges plush with white sofas, zebrapatterned carpets and black paillette-spangled linens. A montage of buffets and bars tempted the 600 guests who set a record for individual ticket sales, helping to raise funds for diverse museum programs. — Text and photos by Amy Scherzer

Beautiful butterflies, symbols of transformation and hope, bedazzled St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation’s elegant Heroes Ball, delighting donors inspired to raise more than $1 million for the Bayless Children’s Cancer Institute (formerly St. Joseph’s Children’s Cancer Institute). Lakeland philanthropists Deanna and Howard Bayless co-chaired the black-tie benefit, introducing daughter Emily, 17, to recount the family’s cancer journey, which began with her diagnosis of a rare sarcoma at age 1. More than 600 community leaders and advocates gathered at the Coliseum in St. Petersburg to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Juvenile Welfare Board, the nation’s first independent board created to guard the rights and needs of Pinellas County children. The main event was the unveiling of the first Dillinger-McCabe Putting Children First Leadership Award, established to honor the legacies of two long-standing members of the JWB board: retired Public Defender Bob Dillinger and the late State Attorney Bernie McCabe. The inaugural award went to retired Circuit Court Judge Irene Sullivan, who in her acceptance speech said that the two men “although having very separate roles, worked to help create programs that provided services to juveniles and often kept them out of detention.’’ — Susan Taylor Martin, photos courtesy of the Juvenile Welfare Board
