WE HAVE MUCH TO CELEBRATE
My first Christmas in St. Petersburg, half a lifetime ago, was my first time attending a lighted boat parade. What a gift to a Tampa Bay newcomer. I was flabbergasted at the sight of watercraft bedecked with lights and wreaths, Santa elves and reindeer, even creche scenes. Many blasted carols, secular and sacred. And the people assembled on those boats seemed to be of exceptionally good cheer. We hope to pass along some of that celebratory spirit in this issue of Bay. You’ll experience some of the stellar views that charm both natives and tourists. You’ll learn about a couple of new art installations, some last-minute gift ideas, various fashion trends and a destination or two. Come February, Wine Weekend St. Pete opens the halfcentury celebration for the Museum of Fine Arts, bringing winemakers from two dynasties to town. In addition to their professional accomplishments, Gina Gallo and JeanCharles Boisset are married to each other. I hope the holidays are times of happy celebration for all of you. May every one of your days be merry and bright. — Mary Jane Park

Mixed-media ceramic, wood and coin necklace with wire detail, $218.
MIX IT UP WITH METAL DECEMBER 2014
bay
21
Mixing metal and stone with tiny fragments of wood, these handcrafted, oneof-a-kind pieces made us feel as though we were on a journey to the Far East. The combination of shapes is appealing, particularly the balance of delicate branches and bold, industrial spheres. This is a season to have fun with our wardrobes, especially accessories. The use of polished stones and coins, attached with twists of wire, make us think of global chic in an unexpected way. BEAUTY MEETS BRAWN BY PETER COUTURE
S
t. Petersburg’s Central Arts District is increasingly awash in murals these days. These bold displays make an even bolder statement about a city that has shed the stodgy impression that many have of it. In that regard, it’s kind of like the new Corvette Stingray. So it’s somewhat fitting to pair the car next to one of downtown’s most graphic works. When Chevy rolled out the seventh-generation Corvette last year, it upset some purists — no round taillights! — but its sculpted styling and second-to-none performance provoked many to look anew at America’s Sports Car. And isn’t that what art is supposed to do — prod us into seeing something in a new light? Well, mission accomplished, Chevrolet. This 2015 coupe recalls the iconic Stingrays of the 1960s with its swept-back roof and sleek stance. Want to be noticed?

The new Corvette’s bold style has prompted many to look anew at America’s Sports Car, although some purists are displeased with the departure from round taillights.
This ’Vette positively pops from its modernist backdrop with Velocity Yellow Tintcoat paint (a $995 option) and black aluminum wheels highlighted by yellow brake calipers. While fans of expensive European sports cars may scoff, this all-American sports car now carries some of the latest automotive technology (carbon fiber, aluminum space-frame, magnetic-ride suspension), which makes it an even better performance bargain. For 2015, there’s also a more refined 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Under the clamshell hood, the 6.2-liter V-8 puts out 460 throaty horsepower while also getting almost 30 mpg on the highway thanks to active fuel management. How’s that for combining muscle and gas mileage? In Touring mode, one of five settings, the shifts are almost imperceptible and the low-to-the-ground Stingray’s ride is comfortable enough for your daily commute. The speed-sense power steering has a nicely weighted feel and, as we can attest, the Stingray makes the perfect companion for tour-

ing the city’s mural landscape. With the turn of a dial, you can adjust the ride — there also are Weather, Eco, Sport and Track settings — to fit your driving conditions. Of course, if you want to fully experience the eight-cylinder symphony, then summon the thunder in Track mode; the optional performance exhaust changes its sound with the driving mode. Inside, Chevy has done another image makeover. The cockpit is now driver-centered and the quality — always a work in progress with Corvette — comes close to matching the level of the car’s performance. Now you can cushion yourself in leather-draped surfaces — velvety Napa leather seats and detail stitching, anyone? Of course, this being a modern ’Vette, the tech enhancements include a color Head-Up Display, a customizable driverinformation cluster, and optional performance-data and video recorder. Chevy has even added mobile Wi-Fi capability. The only thing the Stingray doesn’t come with is a striking backdrop. For that, you’ll have to take your own artistic tour.

A LIGHT TOUCH Luftwerk, the Chicago artist team of Sean Gallero and Petra Bachmaier, creates spectacular light-based installations throughout the United States and was commissioned to create a work called Translucence for Pavilion XXIX, the fundraising gala at the Tampa Museum of Art. The 48 large panels of glass in the Morsani Atrium and lobby were transformed into a kaleidoscopic wonder, which you see here. It has been taken down, but the good news is the duo returns to Tampa in February with a new work for Lights on Tampa, in downtown’s Kiley Garden. — Lennie Bennett

London Philips, a stylishly traditional boutique in South Tampa, offers contemporary clothing and accessories for discerning fellows. The architecture of the store is clean and graphic. KICK UP YOUR HEELS Having made its debut last year, the shoe bootie has taken off this season, partly because of its versatility. It can be dressed up or down, paired with a little black dress or boyfriend jeans. This version from Dolce Vita, found in Tampa’s Penelope T Boutique, has a thoroughly modern twist: It incorporates cutout detailing, a peep toe and the sleekest heel we have ever seen. The shop itself offers an eclectic mix of merchandise that includes designer denim, graphic tees and cozy knits along with styles from local designers and unique vintage jewelry. Owner Nickie Riley has a great sense of her clients’ needs and wants, focusing on a casual sophistication that best describes the lines she offers. “We aim to inspire women to love what they wear,” she said, “and believe that feeling good in your clothes can positively change your perspective.” —Valerie Romas Penelope T Boutique, 3310 W Bay to Bay Blvd., Tampa. penelopetboutique.com; (813) 254-5740. holiday sounds
TURN UP THESE TUNES Gone-pop girl Taylor Swift may not be feeling the love from her former country peers this Christmas season, but Santa sure is. This year’s ho-ho-holiday musical offerings are dominated by Music Row notables (LeAnn Rimes, Sara Evans) and Southernfried singers (Darius Rucker, the cast of TV’s Nashville). Heck, even those good ol’ Dukes of Hazzard boys Tom Wopat and John Schneider get in on the gift-giving. Yeehaw? Sure, why not! Pass the moonshine-spiked eggnog, Bo! Countering the country vibe are the classically solemn and PBS-approved (Christmas at Downton Abbey, Michael W. Smith buddying with Bono), the classically belty and over-the-top (Idina “Elsa from Frozen!” Menzel’s vocally soaring Holiday Wishes) and the classically Sinatra wannabes (Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane in his other job). Of course, my pick for the greatest guiltiest pleasure of 2014 is Earth, Wind & Fire’s remake of their wedding-reception staple September. Yep, you guessed it: “Ba-dee-ya! Dancing in December!” Haha! Genius! What took you so long, merry gentlemen?! — Sean Daly

TOGETHER AT LAST You have probably seen a Pablo Picasso exhibition, and you surely have seen a Dalí exhibition since the world-class Dalí Museum is in St. Petersburg. But you have never seen them together until now. The museum organized the historic “Picasso/Dalí, Dalí/Picasso,” which puts the two great 20th century Spanish artists side by side for direct comparisons and assessments, a dream of executive director Hank Hine more than a decade in the making. Works come from major museums in the United States and Europe and from distinguished private collectors. Some have never been shown before in the United States. You may prefer one artist over the other, but this show will give you new appreciation of each as individuals and in the context of 20th century art. It continues through Feb. 16. For information, go to thedali.org. — Lennie Bennett

Two self-portraits are among the earliest works in the exhibition. Both were painted when the artists were teenagers, although Picasso (1881-1973) was 23 years older than Dalà (1904-1989). Š 2014 Estate of Pablo Picasso, Artist Rights Society.

o Brad and Angelina own a chateau and make a lovely rosé in Provence. Just one? Big deal. The true superstar couple of wine are Gina and Jean-Charles, who have more chateaus, ranchos, bodegas, wineries big and small and labels grand and petite than even the most devout groupie can count. More than 20? At least. Each. You would know them better as Ms. Gallo and M. Boisset, the names of two families who have built enormous wine empires in the New World and the Old in less than a century. Yet both are the bright faces of a younger generation of their dynasties, working royalty if you will — and new parents. Always busy, whether she is in vineyard boots prowling the wet floors of the tank rooms or he is dashing between landmark estates in silk shirts and fast cars. They will be in debonair dress and full-on charm when they visit St. Petersburg this winter to accept the honors of guest star vintners at the Museum of Fine Arts’ Wine Weekend St. Pete 2015. Recognition runs in the families. Hers started in California’s Central Valley in 1933. E&J Gallo now is the largest winery in the world, with more than 60 brands, from André and Hearty Burgundy to the most respected terroir and single vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, the Columbia Valley, Catalyud and Tuscany. His began assembling vineyards in Burgundy in the 1960s and, with young Boisset’s help, in California in the ’90s. The Boisset Collection comprises more than 25 wineries, including historic American names like Buena Vista, DeLoach and Raymond, and the French stalwarts of Bouchard, Moreau, Mommessin and gran cru vineyards and monopoles in Vougeot and Corton-Charlemagne. Gina and Jean-Charles married five years ago and will arrive together in St. Petersburg next year, a rare double treat for Florida wine lovers. Their rich heritages will celebrate the museum’s “Cheers to 50 Years.’’ Boisset attended the Wine Weekend two years ago at the invitation of event chairwoman Patricia Rossignol and her husband, Jean-Francois, and this year, Boisset arranged schedules to bring Gina as well. In California they share one of the most famous houses in Napa, the former home of Robert Mondavi, with the next vintners in line, their twin girls and French bulldog. Frenchie, by the way, has his own line of wines (and videos) with his happy mug on the labels as Napoléon, Betsy Ross and more. The couple love to taste each other’s wines, Boisset says, and some from Oregon and Texas, two places where neither has wineries. They both enjoyed a terrific string of sunny

RICH HERITAGES TO ADD TO CELEBRATION A superstar couple of the wine world will visit St. Petersburg next year as the Museum of Fine Arts marks its 50th anniversary at Wine Weekend. California vintages (minus 2011), and 2014 looks as if it will be another great year. Their histories and styles do differ. “She’s the one who wants to be behind the tanks every day,’’ monitoring and adjusting the progress of each lot, while he is happiest in the last stages of blending and tasting. Boisset also is a builder and director of experiences who has restored the historic Buena Vista winery and made Raymond a sensual temple. While he is a devotee of the Napa appellation, he concedes: “Gina has a big place in her heart for Sonoma.’’

Old Sonoma County is where she made her name — and remade Gallo’s — 20 years ago when she elevated old family vineyards to produce estate cabernet sauvignons and chardonnays. Boisset’s heritage and first grand wines were in France until he fell in love with California’s old vines and fresh surf. Oddly, Gallo and Boisset never crossed paths in California: They met in Bordeaux at Vinexpo, the giant biennial trade fair, in 2000. The foreign exchange has been robust and beneficial. He showed her the vast, intricate diversity of Burgundy’s famously finicky terroir. What did he learn from her? “How to be a better husband. And father. Every day.’’ He laughs. Now they both make and sell wines all over the world, and each cheerfully makes wine affordable by the jug and box for the most humble table. They also produce exceptional wines for oenophiles willing to pay top price. On those they put their personal names. “Gina Gallo’’ is broadly signed across the 90-, 92-, and 94-point Signature Series. “JCB’’ in all caps shouts on top of Boisset’s most imaginative creations. They’ll bring some of each to St. Petersburg in February for grand dinners, rare auction lots and tasting. For now, they’re off to China. Again. It’s a very big market on the agenda of any empire. Ultimately, Gallo and Boisset know chateaus don’t matter. What counts is the vineyards. Like good rulers of any kind, they want to know each plot in detail and select the best for their own.

Lange Farm in east Pasco hill country is a sought-after destination for a range of corporate and private events. But’s also just a pretty place to visit.

Tuxedos and blue jeans. Silk dresses and Western boots. Crystal goblets and Mason jars. You’re likely to see those and a few other unconventional pairings at the Lange Farm in east Pasco hill country, where ancient oaks and the ropes of gray Spanish moss that adorn their branches seem to call to people. More than 25 years ago, Tom and Sue Lange purchased a sprawling property near Dade City, figuring they’d eventually build a house and resettle their family from north Tampa. Back then, Tom Lange told a reporter, “It looked like the Indians were the last to live here. We took out the dead trees, put in a fence around the property and began to dream about what we could do with this.” Friends suggested that they try temporary quarters before making a permanent transfer. They moved into a mobile home on the site. They owned horses, and the first building they erected was a barn to house the first foal born there.

Tom and Sue Lange acquired the land in the late 1980s and have made it a destination for corporate and private events. Pretty soon after that, neighbors in the area persuaded them to build an equestrian center. They began hosting corporate events, charity fundraisers and yearly rodeos. One of the couple’s sons had developmental problems, and the Langes decided to stay in Tampa, where medical specialists are nearby. Over time, the farm has become a destination for horse lovers, retreats, family reunions, and, above all, weddings, about 150 of which take place on the grounds each year. “Our farm is your farm now,” Sarah Ruiz, an event coordinator at the farm, says. Guests often return for maternity photo shoots and anniversary picnics. The Garden House has a wraparound porch and climate-controlled interior. The Antique Barn is more rustic (read: no air conditioning). The Vintage Cottage recently opened a venue for gatherings such as bridesmaids luncheons, bridal and baby showers and birthday parties. On a tour of the property, Ruiz points out several large oak trees, gazebos and fence-lined pathways that are favorite wedding sites. Outdoor games such as horseshoes are popular, and she says families often pay a little more for bonfires and special S’mores packages the farm can supply. Candlelight and fireflies, porcelain table settings and vintage farm implements: a bit different than the Langes’ initial idea, perhaps, but a dream come true for many a visitor.
Our farm is your farm now.” SARAH RUIZ, Lange Farm event coordinator

OUT ON THE HORIZON “I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it’s because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it’s because we all came from the sea. ... All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea ... we are going back from whence we came.” — John F. Kennedy

orse lovers have a special place tucked into a smallish Tampa strip mall, a store that has an extensive inventory of English-style riding pants and jackets, boots and helmets. Jewelry fills the glass counters, and cowboy belts hang from racks. Western wear is also available. Nearly everything having to do with horses is here — except for the horses themselves. Mary Ann O’Keeffe has owned the Whip N Spur Catalog & Tack Shop for 19 years. Previously, she worked on a doctorate at the University of South Florida, was a stay-at-home mom and taught school for 17 years. She and everyone else in her family have ridden and love horses, so the store seemed a good fit. “Whip N Spur was open before I bought it, but it was quite limited,” she said. “I purchased it with the intention of increasing the variety of products and to provide alternate price points to appeal to a more varied customer base.” That philosophy has paid off. O’Keeffe said her customers include both local residents and visitors who are in the area for business or vacationing international travelers. The American Horse Council indicates about 440,000 people are involved in the horse industry in Florida as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. Nationwide, the figure rises to 4.6 million. “Because we carry such a large variety of products for both horse and rider, people often find many items that they need,” she said. “They might also find a gift or something unusual they just can’t live without.” Top-selling items are boots, riding pants, competition shirts and jackets and helmets. Brands such as Ariat, Veredus, Mountain Horse and Hendi de Rivel in all sizes line the racks. The retailer also carries chaps, spurs, riding crops and whips. And O’Keeffe is a stickler for helmets. “The proper equipment is always important to enjoy whatever sport one engages,” she said. “However in riding, both helmets and boots are safety items.”
Florida enacted a statute known as “Nicole’s Law” in 2009 after a 12-year-old Palm Beach County rider who was not wearing a helmet the day in 2006 when she fell off a horse and hit her head on pavement. She was in a coma for 20 days before she died. At present, the law applies to youngsters 16 and under while they are riding on public roadways or rights of way, in public parks and on any other publicly owned or controlled property. The headgear must meet the standards set by the American Society of Testing and Materials. “We know of accidents where helmets have prevented serious damage and head trauma,” O’Keeffe said. “Boots keep the leg from getting stuck in the stirrup and support the ankle. This is important, especially for young, developing legs. Pants are designed to prevent chafing and be flexible so the rider is comfortable. Your attention needs to be on the horse and not on something itchy or binding.” At Whip N Spur, approved safety helmets start around $40 and go up to about $500. But more expensive helmets don’t always mean safer ones. It’s not the manufacturer or designer that riders should look for when buying an approved helmet, O’Keeffe said. It’s the fit. And comfort comes next. Because people’s head shapes vary, riders should try on a number of styles. Beyond helmets, apparel and accessories, Whip N Spur carries the essentials such as bridle bits, first-aid and grooming items (hoof care, liniments and wound care as well as clippers and conditioners). Blankets, fly nets and other necessary horse and stable equipment is at the store or can be ordered. The jewelry the shop sells also is geared to the equestrian. “With horses being so popular, we sell a number of jewelry items or gifts with different horses or horse motifs,” O’Keeffe said. “Horseshoe jewelry is quite popular. It never hurts to have that lucky charm on you.” Whip N Spur Catalog & Tack Shop, 14434 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa; whipnspur.com

DECEMBER 2014
As we look toward 2015, there is much to appreciate about our state and its wildlife. Animals, birds and fish flourish throughout Florida, as we know through the many encounters reported each year. Some, including this Key deer at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, are vulnerable. The species our state classifies as endangered or threatened are the ones we tend to love the most.
