A new fabric collection from textile designer Brook Perdigon, who lives in L.A., draws on her years here.
FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
My birthday is this month, and I always found it interesting that August is the only month that doesn’t have a wellknown or official holiday. (Think about it.) So how about a national Historic Preservation Day when we honor those wonderful old structures and the people whose passions, energy and financial contributions helped save them? I’ll even offer my birth date — Aug. 3 — as a good date for our new holiday. Whoops. That’s National Watermelon Day, so that won’t work. But that leaves 30 others. In this issue we take you to three places that have managed to survived for more than a century: the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, the Gasparilla Inn on Boca Grande and the Hacienda Hotel in New Port Richey. It’s good to know that not everything is being replaced by yet another urgent care clinic or strip mall.

A few weeks ago I had a scary dream. I was trying to get home but everywhere I turned the way was blocked by huge, unfamiliar buildings or giant piles of rubble. In reality, that can be a common feeling in the Tampa Bay area, which is undergoing explosive growth. Hardly a day passes that I don’t drive somewhere and wonder what’s going up here or what was knocked down there.

Textile designer Brook Perdigon’s new botanical-themed fabric line, Impressions, was inspired by her Tampa Bay roots.
Lasting Impressions BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
A
s the pandemic dragged on, Brook Perdigon longed for her native Tampa. Her mother, sister and other relatives were still there. She reminisced about happy summer days at her grandparents’ house in Belleair Beach. Perdigon, a textile designer who lives in Los Angeles, turned her nostalgia into a new fabric collection called Impressions. Inspired by her years in Florida, some patterns evoke flowers in her mother’s garden, others the ’70s decor of the beloved beach house. “I was super homesick during COVID,” Perdigon said, “so I did this.” Perdigon, pictured at right in her studio in Los Angeles, grew up in South Tampa. variety of jobs. Among them: a high-end custom carpet company where she worked on projects for architect Frank Gehry and movie director Steven Spielberg. “It was very top-of-the-line, just gorgeous stuff,” she said of carpets starting in the high five figures. “I was only going to do this a year and I was there eight years.” In 2015, Perdigon launched her own company. Every two years she does a fabric line like Impressions; in between, she releases wallpaper designs. “It costs about $80,000 to bring a fabric line to market so it is quite an investment,” she said. “Wallpaper is much more economical.” All of her products are made in the United States. and silkscreen printing and started a T-shirt line. One shirt, in a nod to home, had a Gasparilla motif. That helped her realize that she enjoyed putting “patterns on things,” she said. “You create these beautiful patterns but you have to understand the manufacturing process to generate them. It’s a two-part thing, (the pattern) has a direct end use after being just an artwork.” Perdigon got a degree in textile and design and honed her skills in a

Brook Perdigon Textiles has been featured in numerous publications, including Architectural Digest, House & Garden and the New York Times. It works mostly with interior designers, though retail customers can buy fabrics and ready-made pillows that are available through the website brookperdigontextiles.com. The company has a showroom in Charleston, South Carolina, but Perdigon plans to represent herself in this part of Florida. Earlier this year, Perdigon and her husband, who have two young children, bought a small condo on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa. They plan to be there this summer for about three weeks, then return for the holidays. “This way,” she said, “I can get home more easily.”

HISTORIC HACIENDA THE CLASSIC “PINK” HOTEL IN NEW PORT RICHEY SHINES ONCE MORE.
22 / bay
Today the Hacienda Hotel, which originally opened in 1927 and is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been restored to its splendor, left. Above, the hotel is pictured in 2019. Times (2019)
STORY BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN PHOTOS BY DOUGLAS R. CLIFFORD
O
ne day several years ago, Jim Gunderson found himself wondering what was going on with the proposed renovation of New Port Richey’s Hacienda Hotel. So he looked up the name of the city’s economic development director and fired off an email. The response was swift — Gunderson is well known in historic hotel circles for restoring Mount Dora’s Lakeside Inn. Might he want to do the same with the Hacienda, a Jazz Age relic that once hosted the likes of Joseph Kennedy, Gloria Swanson and Charlie Chaplin? From that email grew talks with city officials and Gunderson’s ultimate purchase of the decrepit city-owned hotel. Now, after a

multiyear, multimillion-dollar restoration, it is again ready to welcome guests. “We took it back to the original layout,” Gunderson says of the 40-room hotel that first opened in 1927. “We’ve completely rebuilt it. Eighty to 85 percent of the internal structure is new.”
This is the bathroom in one of the Hacienda’s 40 rooms. In its heyday, the Hacienda and Florida’s other “pink” hotels catered to a glamorous crowd. 24 / bay
and, with the help of state grants and other funds, stabilized the vacant building. Then city officials began looking for an investment partner to reopen it as a hotel.
The Hacienda is among the smallest of Florida’s famed “pink” hotels — others include the Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach, the Vinoy in St. Petersburg and the Breakers in Palm Beach — that drew tourists and celebrities during the boom era of the 1920s. New Port Richey was then known as the “Hollywood of the East” because of its popularity with silent movie makers, and the Hacienda catered to a glamorous crowd.
“We were interested in finding a suitor not only to renovate the facility but operate the facility,” said City Manager Debbie Manns, who calls the Hacienda a “historic jewel” and “very critical component” of New Port Richey’s downtown redevelopment plan. Although other offers came in, it was only after meeting Gunderson that city officials knew they had found the right combination of business smarts and experience with historic buildings. He paid $800,000 with performance conditions that “he has more than satisfied,” Manns said.
Over time the hotel’s allure faded, and starting in 1985 it was used to house people with special needs. The city bought it in 2003, closed it three years later
When work began in early 2019, the Hacienda was in terrible shape. Electrical wiring hung exposed. Hardwood floors had rotted. Support beams were in
danger of collapse. There was no air conditioning or sprinkler system. But while much of the hotel is now brand new, it looks surprisingly like it did in its heyday. The chandeliers, molding and corbels in the lobby are original. The front desk is made of reclaimed cypress from 1927. Unique among Florida’s pink hotels, the outside walls still have fish-shaped bumps that evoke mullet jumping in the nearby Pithlachascotee River. Vintage pictures of the hotel and New Port Richey decorate the hallways and guest rooms, which vary in size. The Joseph Kennedy Suite, named after a Hollywood mogul and father of President John F. Kennedy, is the only one with a separate seating area. Three other rooms located on a half floor are jokingly called the “bordello” because women and bootleg liquor purportedly were smuggled in through a Prohibition-era tunnel leading from the river.
Jim Gunderson of Mount Dora, who bought and restored the Hacienda, is pictured in the lobby.
The hotel has no pool but its grounds open onto the riverfront Sims Park, giving it a verdant setting that can be enjoyed from rocking chairs on the patio or a balcony overlooking the park. There is a restaurant with outdoor dining; the chef came from the Lakeside Inn. A separate room can host banquets of 75 guests. The restoration of the Hacienda, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has generated the same type of excitement in New Port Richey that the restoration of the Vinoy did in St. Petersburg three decades ago. “It’s certainly a catalyst for downtown businesses along with the work we’ve done in Sims Park and other initiatives,” Manns said. “People already are clamoring to hold events there. There are two restaurants that are in renovation to open in October that would not be downtown if not for the fact we could tout that the Hacienda was coming.” Gunderson said he was drawn in part to the Hacienda because it is in a pretty, tree-lined downtown that gives New Port Richey, Pasco’s second largest city, the potential to be as alluring to visitors as Dunedin, Tarpon Springs and other small cities on Florida’s west coast. “A property like this would not survive as well on U.S. 19,” he said. “It needs to be in a historical setting in a historic downtown with older buildings.” Luckily for New Port Richey, the Hacienda is in just such a place.
A private dining area maintains the charm of the hotel. bay / 25

FOOD
a good Egg
w
BY MARK PUENTE hile heat and humidity soar across the Tampa Bay area, there’s no better time to fire up your backyard smoker or cooker to wow your friends
and family. I have been an avid griller since I bought a cheap gas grill when I was 20. As a then-father of three, I wanted a way to cook hot dogs and burgers for my sons. Twenty-five years later, my life changed when I purchased an XL Big Green Egg in 2014. I’ve hauled the 219-pound smoker across the country multiple times when I switched jobs and moved. I refuse to let any mover touch Precious — the name of my Egg. ● Eggheads, as Egg owners call themselves, build outdoor kitchens and patios around their cookers. The Eggs are like the centerpiece of Grandma’s fine china on a Thanksgiving table.

When you light an Egg and the temperatures rise, the scent of meat or vegetables searing over lump charcoal permeates the neighborhood. You will never have a hard time getting relatives or friends to come for a cookout. I often cook tri-tip, porchetta and picanha. Picanha is a cut of beef from an area on the rump of the cow above a fat cap. It’s delicious and was made popular in Brazilian steak houses. Many times, I have made paella on my Egg. It’s delicious. My favorite dessert to make on an Egg is blackberry cobbler. Big Green Eggs are more expensive than gas grills and other charcoal smokers at big-box retailers. Depending on the seller, prices range from about $400 for a Mini Egg to more than $4,000 for an XXL model. (One benefit Eggheads love is the lifetime warranty.) The kamado-style cookers are shaped like, well, an egg and have a heavy ceramic lid. The cookers use lump charcoal, not briquettes, and can smoke and grill any kind of meat. They can even bake pizzas, pies and cookies. Unlike steel smokers, Eggs can hold temperatures for more than 18 hours without adding more coals or pellets. (Is it really grilling or smoking if you plug your cooker into electricity?) The heat in Eggs can reach more than 600 degrees to sear steaks like at high-end restaurants. While I learned to smoke pork shoulders, briskets and other meats on other types of smokers, the methods did not transfer to the Big Green Egg. Lighter fluid is one thing you never want to use on a Big Green Egg. The liquid will permeate the ceramic cooker and the foul taste will permeate your food. Another big difference is that I cannot simply open the lid of an Egg when I want to check the temperature of a meat. The Egg must be burped —
raising the lid in stages — to prevent flames from shooting at your face or arms. I’ve singed the hair on my forearms more times that I want to remember. Photo courtesy of BBQ Buddha The best deals are found at Egg events held around the country, including many excellent ones in Florida. (An Eggfest is scheduled for Oct. 2 in Tampa; check flgulfcoasteggfest.com for details.) The bigger events often have more than 100 Eggs throwing smoke for hundreds of attendees. Eggfests allow cooks to show off their grilling, smoking or baking skills. The camaraderie revolves around the love of smoking and grilling meats. The key to saving money is to buy the Egg before the event. The sellers, often grilling stores, offer a deep discount on Egg packages and accessories. The cooks use the Egg for the event and the people who buy the Eggs take the cookers home at the end of the day. You can save hundreds of dollars. If you’re lucky, bargains can also be found at some retailers. My son and I once wandered into a store that had marked down all grills and cookers because it no longer wanted to sell them. In one corner sat two XXL Eggs. My heart raced when I spotted the massive cookers, each weighing 375 pounds. They can cook 40 burgers, 16 whole chickens or about 20 steaks on a 29-inch cooking surface. I stood guard over them, thinking of multiple reasons why I needed to walk away — but I couldn’t. The retailer had reduced the price from $4,000 to $1,400. I called my wife a few times. She told me to quit wasting time and buy it. I waffled, though. After 20 minutes, my son barked, “Will you make your mind up already? I’m buying the other one.” Our XXL smokers were delivered days later. We’re egging.
BBQ Buddha Game Day Wings 1 pound chicken wings 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 tablespoons Big Green Egg Sweet and Smoky Seasoning 1 cup Big Green Egg Vidalia Onion Sriracha Barbecue Sauce Set the Egg for indirect cooking with the convEGGtor at 350 degrees F/177 degrees C with applewood chunks. Drizzle wings with vegetable oil. Add Big Green Egg Sweet and Smoky Seasoning to the wings and toss to cover. Add the seasoned wings to the Egg. Cook for 30 minutes and flip to the other side. Cook another 20 minutes and remove from the Egg. Increase the temperature of the Egg to 400 degrees F/204 degrees C. Coat the wings with the Big Green Egg Vidalia Onion Sriracha Barbecue Sauce. Place the wings back on the Egg and cook for 5 minutes or until the sauce has caramelized. Remove the wings from the Egg and let rest for 5 minutes. Optional: Garnish with cilantro, chopped green onions, toasted sesame seeds or fresh lime.

ART ART FOR FOR THE THE PEOPLE PEOPLE
Catherine Woods designed and created the colorful murals being installed at PSTA SunRunner bus shelters in St. Petersburg. Photo by Martha Asencio-Rhine

IF
you’ve driven in Tampa’s West Shore area or by St. Petersburg’s police headquarters and children’s hospital, you might have noticed outdoor sculptures made largely of glass. They are the work of Catherine Woods, a St. Petersburg sculptor
whose striking pieces of public art are found in cities throughout the United States, from Reno, Nevada, to Silver Spring, Maryland. She is currently at work on 16 glass murals for the new Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus shelters along First Avenues N and S. • Raised in Maryland, Woods worked as an art director for advertising agencies in Chicago and St. Louis before starting her own business more than two decades ago. She and the client — typically a government agency — agree on a concept, then she does drawings, makes models and works closely with fabricators in New Jersey or Germany to produce the final sculpture. We recently spoke with Woods at her St. Petersburg studio off 22nd Avenue N. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. — Susan Taylor Martin Why did you decide to switch careers? Ad money is hard to walk away from but it is really hard work and wasn’t as rewarding as it was in the beginning. I had a chance to take my first three-week vacation, went to South Africa and realized there I wanted to make art full time. I came back and started saving up for a year and then I left my job in St. Louis. How did you end up in St. Petersburg? I wanted to be somewhere warm near water and my partner at the time and I did a tour of the country and liked St. Pete the best. It’s an amazing, beautiful place. Why have you concentrated on glass rather than on painting or other types of art? I like the color of glass and working with glass. I’ve done metal work and also tile work but glass and I just seem to get along really well. Who comes up with the idea for the artwork? Usually I respond to RFQ — request for qualifications — for public art projects around the country. They generally have an idea what they want — where to put it, if they want to represent the community and so on. I’m going to come up with better ideas because it’s what I do for a living, I’m good at it. (The PSTA) knew they wanted art in shelters and they wanted it to be a back panel, so that’s already a good fit. I came up with the idea of two straight lines up First Avenue south and north. I wanted the panels to relate to each other, and since St. Pete is such a big mural city I also wanted to incorporate elements from each neighborhood so the shelter would be like a welcoming front porch to the community. I took between 200 and 500 photographs per neighborhood and chose ones to incorporate. I took photos of a ton of houses. There’s a seahorse medallion from a house in Kenwood, there are elements from the high school. They’re very subtle. Someone observed that the incorporated photo elements are like “Easter eggs” for the viewer to discover. How long does it take to make a piece? It’s been maybe a year and a half since I got this assignment. It’s a very intimate relationship (with the fabricator), the samples go back and forth. When I get a glass sample, maybe
the blue is not bright enough so we do an adjustment and go back and forth until it’s exactly right. Are there challenges — and advantages — to working with public agencies? There are a lot of meetings, and with this particular project, there were a lot of groups that were interested in it and wanted to see it along the way. That’s completely fine. I want people to feel happy with it from the beginning. Part of that is communication — if you don’t keep people in the loop that’s not going to go so well. I don’t want to jinx it but I’ve never had a problem with payments (from a public agency). I read horror stories about galleries closing and keeping artists’ work and not paying them. I have not run into that. Public art sometimes faces criticism that the money would be better spent on basic needs like food and housing. Your response to that? One thing I love about public art is that it is egalitarian. It’s not in museums, it’s coming to (people’s) everyday life. Having something that goes above construction grade, to do something more appealing, I think that’s good for everyday life. Airports are like mini galleries now in many places. I think the Tampa airport is wonderful. Your previous studio was in the St. Petersburg Warehouse Arts District, which has become sort of a mecca for artists. Why did you move? I like people, but when working on the concept, that’s really a drill-down time and I don’t need the interruption. If you’re around other people, they might have downtime and then they’ll come over and want to talk. I love sharing my ideas and getting feedback, I love socializing, but not when I’m working. What’s next after the bus shelter project? This has been a lot of work, which is great. I think I’m ready to slow down for a few months and go back to the studio and do some exploration. I’d like to spend a few months not working, or working with smaller pieces of glass. I think slowing down and taking a break is good — you can come back with fresh ideas.

riving over the Boca Grande Bridge brings back 30 years of memories vacationing on Gasparilla Island with my children, relatives and family friends. It still has the same homes, the same shops, the same restaurants and the same ambiance from those
bygone days. Rather than a been-there, done-that vacation, it’s a so-glad-to-be-back respite. This pristine, 7-mile-long island that separates Charlotte Harbor from the Gulf of Mexico is just 90 minutes by car from St. Petersburg — I say by car because many visitors arrive via boat. This is, after all, the tarpon fishing capital of the world.
52 / bay
The first order of business is to rent a golf cart, the main mode of transportation on the island. On past visits, my mom, my daughter and I would drive to the white sandy beach, where we’d alternate between sunbathing and body surfing in the crystal-clear water. My father, husband and son always had another objective: catching the largest tarpon in the pass. The silver game fish can grow to as big as 8 feet long and 280 pounds. Boca Grande draws anglers from around the world who pay big bucks to compete in tournaments where they can win bigger bucks. During peak tarpon season, midApril through June, up to 40 guides can be trolling the same location at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor. This summer, I ventured back with just my husband, and we were lucky to book a room at the historic Gasparilla Inn & Club, the oldest wooden hotel in Florida. These days, the inn, which closes at the end of July and reopens in October, recommends making reservations a year in advance.

requiring men to wear jackets and ties. (You know a place is steeped in tradition when it follows something called the “social season.”) The resort also owns the Pink Elephant Restaurant, which is walking distance from the inn. It serves steaks, chops and seafood for lunch and dinner — our favorites include fish tacos and Southern tomato pie, with layers of roasted tomatoes and lemon ricotta cheese, finished with olives. The Gasparilla Inn has 163 rooms — 63 in the main house, 67 in surrounding cottages and 33 suites. For golfers and tennis players, the resort offers a Pete Dye 18-hole golf course and Har-Tru courts. Unique to the inn is the Croquet Club, featuring a full championship English Rule croquet court where traditional white clothing is required of players. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the resort was developed by officers of the American Agricultural Chemical Company of Boston, which operated a phosphate shipping port on the island. In those days, the inn hosted inventor Thomas Edison, tycoons like Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone and movie stars including Katharine Hepburn. The inn was a favorite hangout of President George H.W. Bush and his family. Many of the visitors today still arrive by boat and dock at the full-service marina. For tarpon fishing, it’s safest to hire a professional fishing guide to navigate boat congestion in the pass. “Boca Grande has got more tarpon in May or June than any known spot in the world,” Capt. Dave Markett said. “Certainly, during the latter weeks of May and the early weeks of June there is a significant population of truly giant tarpon — fish that are estimated to be 50 to 70 years old and 180 to 250 pounds.” On the days we visited, Markett had been hired by two women who caught a massive tarpon after “fighting the fish for an hour and 20 minutes until it was unhooked, revived and released,” he said. Downtown Boca Grande has several shops, including The Palm on Park Lilly Pulitzer Signature Store and Fugate’s, a former drugstore that sells everything from greeting cards and household gifts to apparel. The upscale women’s boutique at the back of the store carries swimsuits, clothing, handbags, beachwear, shoes and jewelry. Capt. Dave Markett helps two guests land a tarpon. The huge fish can grow to 8 feet and nearly 300 pounds. Photo courtesy of Capt. David Markett
Before we arrived, we asked the concierge at the inn to book us a reservation at The Temptation on the downtown’s main street, Park Avenue. I’m glad we planned ahead because it was booked solid for a couple of weeks.
yellow wooden frame, white pillared entrance and gabled roofs. The guest rooms, like the inn’s common areas, are filled with wicker and rattan furnishings and chintz patterns of soothing pale pinks, greens and yellows with plenty of seashells and palm fronds.
We have been eating at “The Temp” since our first trip to the island. We sat in the same teal-colored banquette where our children and friends used to join us. The dimly lit restaurant looks like the backdrop of a 1950s movie and still has a working cigarette machine in the back room. We ordered the restaurant’s signature panseared snapper with lemon, garlic and apple juice and the gold brick sundae, vanilla ice cream topped with a frozen nutty, chocolate crust.
We arrived in time for supper in the main dining room, one of the few restaurants in Boca Grande not decorated with giant, mounted tarpon. But we heard plenty of tales of the catches of the day from anglers in the room while we started our meal with a creative Caesar salad plated with a tightly wound wheel of romaine topped with a Parmesan crisp and cherry tomatoes. Next came fresh grilled pompano with caper and brown butter sauce. The key lime pie with bruleed meringue and raspberry coulis might have been the best we’ve ever eaten. The pucker-power punch of lime told us we were getting the real deal and not a Persian lime ripoff, the sweetness from the meringue neutralizing the tang. The main dining room adheres to a strict dress code from Dec. 19 through April 30, 54 / bay
Boca Grande isn’t cheap: Our fairly small room at the inn was $305 a night during an off-season week. And rentals at the Boca Grande Club can go for upwards of $6,000 a week during the social season. Most fishing guides charge upwards of $1,000 for a three- to four-hour tour. Even the toll booth to enter the island has increased its prices over the years. The toll for cars is $6 a trip — but definitely worth the price of admission. Gasparilla Inn & Club, 500 Palm Ave., Boca Grande. gasparillainn.com. Contact Capt. Nearly 300 guests donned tropical-print shirts and dresses for A Night in Hawaii, the annual gala put on by St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation. From left, Emery Ellinger, Scott Smith, Cathy Swanson, Travis Brown and Kathy Parker.
Karamu co-chairpersons Rod and Kim Stohler rocked a rad ’80s theme for the roaring return of the annual black-tie benefit for ZooTampa at Lowry Park, starting with cocktail hour overlooking the giraffe and elephant habitats. Moving inside to the Savannah Oasis, the Surf n’ Turf dinner was served atop vinyl records; roses adorned cassette tape centerpieces; and a giant Rubik’s Cube covered the dance floor. CEO Joseph Couceiro played a video highlighting exciting plans for the Florida, South America, Africa and Asia exhibits, expansions furthered by the $500,000 raised at the April 9 gala, including two $25,000 auction bids to appear on the TV show “Secrets of the Zoo Tampa” and $8,000 to name an endangered baby orangutan. — Amy Scherzer, photos courtesy of Mike Carlson Photography

Moffitt Cancer Center 27th Magnolia Ball
Sandi and Chris Sullivan.
Moffitt Cancer Center supporters flashed back to the ’80s and raced to the future of cancer research and treatment when they raised $3.2 million at the 27th Magnolia Ball, a rocking black-tie benefit headlined by Pat Benatar and Neal Giraldo. Before their forever fans jammed the dance floor, Moffitt’s very own band, the ReMissions, featuring president and CEO Patrick Hwu, M.D., on keyboard, entertained the 750 guests at the JW Marriott Water Street in Tampa on May 21. Co-chairpersons Sandi and Chris Sullivan also welcomed stage 4 lymphoma patient Jarryd Reid to talk about his successful treatment and thank the Moffitt donors. The celebration continued at an ’80s-themed after-party. — Amy Scherzer, photos courtesy of Moffitt Cancer Center

Opera Tampa Grand Gala
Ernie and Judy Lisi.
Shawn Desren, left, and Frank Warren.
David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts CEO Judy Lisi and husband Ernie Lisi took their turn in the Grand Gala spotlight, accepting the Anton Coppola Excellence in the Arts Award themselves after many years of honoring other notable influencers of the opera world. The couple recalled the trials and triumphs since creating Opera Tampa with Maestro Coppola, debuting with Madama Butterfly in 1996. Gala chairperson Lee Lavoie Davis chose a classical Venetian Carnevale theme, making it fun to guess who was behind those masks. Opera Tampa vocalists entertained, accompanied by artistic director Robin Stamper, during dinner on the Ferguson Hall stage May 14, inspiring the audience to raise more than $116,000 to keep opera flourishing in Tampa Bay. — Amy Scherzer, photos by Marc Edwards

Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision Dining in the Dark A Kentucky Derby theme topped the Dining in the Dark dinner benefit for the Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision at the Centre Club in Tampa on April 30. The 120-plus guests arrived in Derby-worthy hats for the stylish occasion, and as always, spent part of the evening blindfolded to experience what it is like to be without sight or with only low vision. The annual party raised more than $30,000 to support comprehensive rehabilitation and training programs with assistive technology and devices. — Amy Scherzer, photos courtesy of Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision
