WHAT’S IN STORE FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
A
t this time two years ago, many of us were blissfully going along with our lives. Could we ever have imagined how dramatically things would change in a month? Big-time sports and entertainment — canceled. Stores closed, malls deserted. Roads all but empty. The hunt for toilet paper, masks and hand sanitizers became a national obsession. For years I had half listened to radio ads for Zoom, thinking it a niche service at best. Suddenly it was the lifeline connecting millions of us to work, family and longlost friends. The pandemic has been a period of great loss and suffering. But for the luckier among us, it has also provided time to learn new skills, take up new hobbies and rethink how we want to live our lives. In this issue we explore pandemic-spurred trends in fashion, home decor and urban planning. Let’s hope that at this time next year, we can look back on 2022 as a catalyst of change for the better.

hristy Herrmann of Sweet Divas Chocolates in downtown St. Petersburg is decorating edible, lace-covered boxes to fill with Belgian chocolates. Olivier Rodriguez of CocoAddiction in St. Pete Beach is hand-painting gem-shaped chocolates to resemble emeralds and diamonds. And Jennifer Hill of Peterbrooke Chocolatier in downtown Tampa
will be dipping locally sourced strawberries in a variety of chocolate concoctions while keeping chocolate-infused wines and champagnes on ice. All three chocolatiers say the weeks surrounding Valentine’s Day are their busiest of the year and they are hoping candy is a pandemic-proof passion. All three are self-taught and inspired by their shared affairs with chocolate.

The goodies at CocoAddiction in St. Pete Beach include raspberry chocolate heels, a chocolate purse and bonbons.
CHRISTY HERRMANN SWEET DIVAS CHOCOLATES Christy Herrmann was four years retired from a demanding career in the computer industry when she decided to open a chocolate shop. The decision was more of a need to get out of the house rather than get into a new business, all prompted by the retirement of her late husband, Conrad. “It was like having a grand piano in the kitchen — you love it and it’s wonderful, but it’s underfoot and in the wrong place all the time,” she said. “I came home one night and he was arranging the spices alphabetically. I knew that one of us had to get out of the house.” Herrmann had dabbled in a few crafts, including candy making, and she had been making homemade ice cream for Conrad for years. At the same time, her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Bessler, was looking to leave her career as a dental hygienist. Both women wanted to do something that would make people happy. “No one is unhappy coming into a chocolate shop,” said Herrmann. “No one says, ‘I have to go
get chocolates tomorrow — oh what will I do?’ ” The two embarked on the delicious task of tasting chocolates from throughout the world. “For us the Swiss chocolate was too sweet and the French was too bitter but we loved the Belgian chocolates,” Herrmann said. Finding a storefront location on St. Petersburg’s popular Beach Drive sealed the deal. “For the most part, we sell ganache-filled chocolates, but we also do barks, chocolatedipped pretzels and chocolate-dipped Oreos,” said Herrmann, who continues to sell the homemade ice creams her husband loved so much as well as cookies, cupcakes and even wedding cakes. The goodies are prepared in an off-site commercial kitchen in Pinellas Park. After 10 years, Herrmann, who now runs the business herself, has built strong relationships with her customers. “I’ve met so many fabulous people and have the opportunity to talk to them and share the love of chocolate,” she said. “It just makes for such a wonderful experience. You come in and you smell it and you feel good.” Sweet Divas is open seven days a week and
closes only on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The minimum purchase is one piece, because Herrmann understands the need to satisfy an immediate chocolate craving. Customers can also buy personalized boxes of chocolates, selecting each piece themselves. Sweet Divas Chocolates, 400 Beach Drive NE, No. 181, St. Petersburg. 727-379-4567. sweetdivaschocolates.com.
OLIVIER RODRIGUEZ COCOADDICTION Olivier Rodriguez grew up in the alpine town of Annecy, France, where his family owned restaurants and food was the star of all gatherings. He moved to the United States in 1999 and spent years working alongside some of the best chefs in the hotel industry in Sarasota,

Peterbrooke was the stuff,” she said. A schoolteacher for 17 years and a self-described chocolate freak, Hill applied online several times to open a franchise of the European chocolates, but never got a response. Finally, after moving to Tampa seven years ago, she attended a franchise expo at the Tampa Convention Center. The first booth she saw was Peterbrooke Chocolatier, and she was on a mission. She was awarded the franchise and found a prime location in downtown Tampa near the Glazer Children’s Museum and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

covered almonds or cashews, chocolate candied ginger and chocolate bars, as well as specialty spreads and jams. On weekends, he has designed 6-inch or 9-inch cakes available to purchase. Customers can also place special orders.
“You show me something once and I can do it,” said Rodriguez, who experimented filling chocolates with things like orange Grand Marnier, raspberry Chambord and Madagascar Bourbon vanilla. “We got very good feedback so we decided to come up with CocoAddiction.”
Rodriguez uses local ingredients for his fillings, including fresh lemons he picks himself and Made Coffee from Clearwater. Opening a business during a pandemic has been challenging, but Rodriguez said that what he can’t predict in the marketplace he can make up for in customer service. If he’s in the shop, even if it’s closed, he will happily invite customers in to purchase chocolates or place orders.
Rodriguez, along with Pugin, began packaging and selling the special-order chocolates throughout the Miami area. When his girlfriend accepted a job in Tampa, Rodriguez moved too. He and Pugin decided to expand CocoAddiction to a store and found a spot on Corey Avenue in St. Pete Beach. They officially opened a cafelike bakery, coffee shop and candy store last April. Pugin remains in Miami and consults remotely while Rodriguez designs and makes the chocolates at the shop. Each piece takes two days to create between the chocolate coatings and the colorful artwork. Customers can select individual pieces or fill a variety of luxuriously packed boxes in several sizes. Rodriguez also makes and sells macarons, French-inspired tarts, chocolate-

JENNIFER HILL
Unfortunately, Hill said, “I signed the lease the day the city shut down on March 13.” After the pandemic lockdown, she opened in September 2020 with the help of her three grown children. “We opened the store as a family and we knew we could make it happen,” she said. Her daughter, Sydney Morton, is the head chocolatier, while daughter Drew does the marketing and son Beau helps operate the store. Some of the chocolates are imported from the chain’s factory in Jacksonville, but most of the products are made on site. Hill sells a variety of filled chocolates, truffles and caramels along with ice creams and gelato. But one of her specialties is custom-designed chocolates featuring company logos or sports themes. She has a Super Bowl party favorite, true-to-size chocolate footballs with or without popcorn inside, as well as miniature chocolate helmets. She also designs personalized wedding favors and makes decorative baskets filled with a variety of chocolates she can select or customers can create on their own. For Valentine’s Day, Hill recommends chocolates to pair with various wines or champagnes. She also sells chocolate versions of both. This year, she is especially excited about a new offering: ruby red chocolate from Ecuador with some hints of fruit in the flavor for dipping chocolates and strawberries.
PETERBROOKE CHOCOLATIER
“We have a lot of love here and we love sharing it,” Hill said.
Jennifer Hill first fell in love with Peterbrooke chocolates while living in Jacksonville, where the company was founded in 1983. “In that area,

WELCOME TO THE DISTRICT BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
B
arely five years ago, the 52-acre lot near the corner of Gandy and West Shore boulevards was bereft of all but the shuttered sales center for a doomed development. Today, it is a thriving community with high-end apartments, townhomes and a bayview condo tower well underway. In the cute town center, you can get your hair styled, buy a swimsuit and dine on tuna tartare and truffle fries. The Westshore Marina District is one of three new planned communities that have sprung up in Tampa — the others are Midtown on Cypress Street just off Interstate 275 and the huge Water Street development south of downtown. While the pandemic initially was expected to drive people out of cities and into the suburbs, it has only accelerated the trend toward walkable live-work-play areas where the full range of urban amenities is close at hand. Unlike Midtown and Water Street, the marina district does not have any office buildings, but it is only 10 minutes from the West Shore business district and is a short trip across the Gandy Bridge to Raymond James, Jabil and other major employers. And district residents working from home can do so in a setting that includes landscaped walkways, small lakes and soon a 1.5-mile waterfront park. “It’s our local neighborhood with a gorgeous lifestyle,” says Rikki Radkay, who with sister Remy opened the first store in the district last spring. The district, site of this month’s fashion shoot, was originally planned for a grandiose residential project called Port Tampa Bay. The Great Recession killed that, and a Fort Lauderdale firm, BTI Partners, eventually acquired the property. As master developer, BTI put in roads and utilities and sold off part of the land to other developers for apartments and townhomes. BTI kept the rest of the space for its own projects: Marina Pointe, where the first of three planned 16-story condo towers will be finished this year; a 150-slip marina; and the Marina Landings retail center. Noah Breakstone, CEO of BTI Partners, notes that the district and many of its amenities are open to those living in surrounding areas. “The best part of Westshore Marina District is that it brings new life and energy to South Tampa,” he said. “Our development, and the lifestyle it creates, is here for everyone to enjoy.” The first restaurant, Cru Cellars, opened last spring with indoor and outdoor seating and a wine list almost as impressive as that of the original Cru Cellars in Tampa’s Palma Ceia area. (There is also a small offshoot at Armature Works near downtown Tampa.) A second restaurant, Chuck

Lager’s American Tavern, is expected to open by this summer. And a third, yet to be announced, will be next to the marina area so boaters can pull up. For district residents who don’t want to make a trip to Publix, Duckweed Urban Market in the Landings carries prepared foods as well as fresh veggies, meats, frozen foods, beer and wine. There’s also a small adjoining Duckweed liquor store. Other shops now open in Marina Landings include Crave Spa, where customers can enjoy a selection of wines while getting their nails done; Salon Color Bar, a hair salon; and Sand Surf Co., which sells swim and casual wear. The Radkay sisters moved their Sand Surf store from Tampa’s Channelside District last May after a friend told them about the new marina district. They grew up in what they call New England’s “surf culture” but went to the University of Tampa and decided to stay in the city. “We just loved that (the district) was right on the water so it really fits our water lifestyle,” Remy said. “We’re excited to see our first full spring and summer, and super excited because all the places around us are really starting to open.” The sisters are so enthused about the marina district that Remy already makes her home in the Town Westshore apartments, a quick walk from the store. And Rikki plans to move to the district, too.
The first of three 16-story condo towers in the Westshore Marina District is expected to be finished this year. Most units in the first building are sold out at prices starting in the high $800,000s. RECIPE
CRU CELLARS’ CROQUE MADAME This fabulous recipe is a collaboration between Ricardo Nava, head chef at Cru Palma Ceia, and Jasmine Funk, head chef at the new Cru Westshore in the Westshore Marina District. Bechamel sauce: 16 ounces half-and-half 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg Pinch ground cardamon 1 ½ tablespoons Dijon mustard ½ teaspoon ground clove Salt and pepper, to taste 6 ounces unsalted butter, divided 2 tablespoons flour 8 slices thick lemon brioche bread 12 ounces bacon, cooked and diced 12 ounces spicy capocollo, cooked and diced 12 ounces grated Gruyere cheese, divided Nonstick spray 4 eggs 4 ounces Grana Padano (aged Parmesan alternative) Preheat the broiler. To make the bechamel sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine half-and-half, nutmeg, cardamon, mustard, clove and salt and pepper. Once mixed, set aside. In a small saucepan, melt 1 ounce butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until you smell the flour and butter cooking, 2 to 3 minutes. Do not allow it to brown. Add the half-and-half mixture and bring to a boil, whisking well to incorporate the roux. Once the mixture is combined evenly, stir occasionally until the mixture thickens to a soup consistency, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a bowl to cool. Arrange 4 slices of the bread on a flat surface. Top each with bacon and capocollo. Mix together half of the Gruyere cheese and the

bechamel sauce. Taste for seasoning. Spread some of the sauce over the top, then top with another slice of bread. Heat a large cast-iron skillet/pan and, when hot, add half of the remaining butter. Add 2 of the sandwiches and brown on one side, 2 minutes. Turn on the other side and brown 2 more minutes. Transfer to a baking sheet and repeat with the remaining butter and sandwiches. Spread the remaining bechamel on top of the sandwiches and top with the other half of the Gruyere cheese.
Wipe away any crumbs from the cast-iron skillet/pan and spray with nonstick spray. Crack 4 eggs into the skillet, leaving a little room between each. (Alternatively, fry 2 at a time.) While the eggs are frying, place the sandwiches under the broiler and broil until the top becomes golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Season the eggs with salt and top each sandwich with a fried egg. Finish with grated Grana Padano and enjoy immediately. Makes 4 servings.

For two years, we’ve slouched around in sweats and T-shirts. Enough, already. It’s time to punch up the wardrobe. The looks we like include floaty dresses in bright colors and more structured athleisure wear that can take you to lunch or even the office. The Westshore Marina District and the nearby Salt Shack restaurant in Tampa provided the perfect backdrop as we ease into the new year.

HOME S
EVER GREEN BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
G
reen is in, gray could be heading out. Love those clean mid-century lines, but how about something really comfortable. And wouldn’t a luxurious home theater be
nice? With many of us spending a lot more time at home during the pandemic, tastes in furnishing and decor have changed. One example: a shift back to warm tones and the soothing colors of nature. While it seemed that every house on the market for a time had the same gray walls and flooring, four of the major paint manufacturers — Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, PPG and Behr — all chose shades of green as their colors of the year for 2022. (The Pantone Color Institute, which picked gray and yellow last year, went with periwinkle blue for the new year.) We talked to three bay area designers about color and what else is in store for 2022 (although supply chain issues mean that what’s actually in the stores might still be limited).

ENRIQUE CRESPO CRESPO DESIGN GROUP, TAMPA Even in high school, Crespo knew what he wanted to do in life. “I traveled a lot around Europe with my mom and was attracted to design and art and going to museums,” said the Tampa native. He attended the Savannah College of Art and Design, served a sixmonth internship with a designer and 22 years ago opened his own firm. Today he “works all over the place,” including Beverly Hills, Calif., Montana and the Florida Keys.
Leah Chorniak of Spaces by Leah, Tampa
Due to the pandemic, “people have been home a really long time and they’ve decided to make their home just the way they want it,” Crespo said. “They are trying to make things simpler, not as fussy so there are a lot of cleaner, neutral colors.” He considers mid-century “timeless,” but said that clients and furniture makers are on the same page these days when it comes to comfort. Whereas “very sculptural pieces” used to be in vogue, “manufacturers are moving away from that and making these very beautiful pieces that are welcoming as well to lay in and read a book,” Crespo said. In a continuing trend, high-end home construction is forsaking formal dining rooms for great rooms. Among Crespo’s current projects is one for a North Florida couple that bought a condo in Tampa for when they come to see the Lightning and Bucs play. “They wanted a great room with multiple seating areas. You might have just one big room that’s a dining room, game room, whatever.”

“Home gyms have become more and more popular so people don’t have to go out and expose themselves to a lot of other people. We’re seeing more and more saunas in homes, more and more full-on gyms.”

“I really see a move towards indoor-outdoor living. Now that people are at home they really want to have this sort of seamless experience from that inside to the outside of the home. When I see colors like that (the green colors of the year) it really ties into nature.” “There’s always a demand for home theaters. Because of the pandemic people don’t want to sit in a movie theater for two or three hours. I try to keep people away from the traditional theater chair. I really love big giant chaise lounges that are so much more comfortable than a theater chair. We try to do acoustical covering to help with the sound. Wall coverings (for home theaters) have come a long way. One company I love, Elitis, a French company, does this great foam paper that comes in a variety of patterns. The acoustic quality is fabulous.”
While doing custom artwork for clients, Chorniak often found herself mentally critiquing their design sense — or lack of it — as she hung paintings. “I would bring my art into a client’s home and think, ‘If they would just move that vase over there,’ ” she recalled. Her flair for decorating led to working with friends and then to starting her own business seven years ago. Chorniak numbers several Tampa Bay Buccaneers among her clientele. To accommodate their size, she sometimes designs furniture that is larger than what most stores sell and that has “more of a pitch,” as she puts it, making it easier to lean back into and sink down. “Comfort” is today’s buzzword. “Now that people are working from home they really want to feel cozy and comfortable,” Chorniak said. “I certainly hope mid-century is making a bit of an exit.
The color of the armchairs in this South Tampa room designed by Enrique Crespo is just one of the many shades of green currently in vogue. Photo courtesy of Enrique Crespo
It has unique lines and is interesting to look at, but it’s not the everyday cozy go-to chair or sofa with a book and a cup of coffee. There’s a demand for sofa and chairs that have a deep pitch.”
in comfortable ergonomic seating. A great area rug, modern draperies — things like that will absorb sound because kids might be in the next room and also give a beautiful aesthetic.”
Chorniak also finds that many of her clients “are feeling grayed out.”
“A big thing is metal color — gold, silver, copper. Builders typically give you brushed nicked (on fixtures), but when you look at a design magazine you’re not going to see brushed nickel, you’ll see satin brass, beautiful matte gold or polished nickel. Those are things that are a little more expressive for your personality.”
“Things are leaning away from gray and toward your muted greens, beige tones, oatmeal tones in soft fabrics like velvet,” she said. “Even kids’ rooms seem to be a little more neutral. Gone are the days when you had those retro colors that are stimulating for children but keep them a little more active.”
OTHER TRENDS “Home offices used to have big bulky furniture and now that we’ve gone to a digital world, people have less paper laying around and they are more interested
“The master bedroom was usually that room where you shut the door and had a dog bed on the side. Now that people are living more hours inside the house, they are really having it as a sanctuary. With the master, we’ve been doing a lot of ivories and off white because it’s soothing and makes it feel like the space is bigger than it is. Maybe have a coffee maker or a wine fridge — I find parents are absolutely loving that it’s
convenient to have a glass of wine at night in their own little sanctuary.”
SUZAN DECKER ROSS DECKER ROSS INTERIORS, CLEARWATER Ross has had her own design firm for 30 years but the roots go back much further. “Both my parents were in the furniture business,” she said, “and though I really didn’t know it at the time it was in my blood.” She studied fashion first, then design and realized that the two go hand in hand. “I had an aha moment — I love design!” said Ross, who has clients throughout Florida as well as in other states. Pandemic-caused delays mean it might take 20 or 30 months to get a custom sofa instead of two or bay / 43

three as before. “You can’t put a room together, which hurts us,” Ross said, “so we see a lot of repurposing and renewing. Maybe they recover something or if it’s metal, paint it a different color. We’re seeing vintage coming back really big” because of the availability. With many people continuing to work at home, Ross finds a desire to bring the outdoors in. “Living walls” and kitchen herb gardens are big, as are flowering plants. And green will be everywhere. At the annual furniture market in High Point, N.C., last summer, “there was everything from olive green to evergreen,” Ross said. “It’s really wild the greens that were there.” In bedrooms, heavy comforters are being replaced by lighter-weight quilts and coverlets. Also, And anyone who has ever found themselves in a hotel or guest bedroom wondering where to put all the extra pillows, decorative and otherwise, might be heartened by this 44 / bay

design change: “We’re not using as many pillows,” Ross said.
OTHER TRENDS “LED lighting is huge. Now it comes in every different hue and they are nice because they last for years and the prices have come way down. Anytime we redo a home we always change all the lights to LED almost immediately. When doing design lighting can make a huge difference.” “Light woods like oak are coming back. For many years, people were so into darker floors, the cherries, the mahoganies. Now we’re seeing a lot more of the light wide-plank flooring. Also, luxury vinyl plank flooring has really come a long way. Back in the day you could hear the clink, clink on the floor when you walked, now you can’t even tell.”
Wallpaper is making a comeback, especially textured wallpaper like this behind the TV in a room designed by Decker Ross Interiors. Note, too, the lighter colored floors. Photo courtesy of Bos Images
“Textures are big, too. Your wallpaper and grass cloth, embossed papers are really big right now. We’re seeing a surge in wallpaper coming back, maybe in a power bath or accent wall or kitchen.” bay / 45

FACE S
POSITIVE LIFE LESSONS
Debbie Lundberg, a Tampa life coach and kidney donor, starts most mornings with a 5K run. Photo courtesy of Michael Lundberg

BY AMY SCHERZER
D
ebbie Lundberg can barely squeeze all her endeavors on her business card: life coach, corporate trainer, national speaker, image consultant, podcast host and author of 12 self-help books, the last two, Remote Work Rock Star and Living Kindly, published during the pandemic. A TEDx Talk, “Who Cares,” has received thousands of views. Her email tagline neatly sums up her objectives: “Committed to applied knowledge, growth, fun & ROI” (return on investment). A “learned, not born, optimist” since launching her Presenting Powerfully business in 2006, Lundberg starts most days with 100 pushups and a 5K run. Always wake up with a “grin and gratitude,” she says. “Smiling lifts my face and energy.” Friends have compared Lundberg’s positive energy to Apple TV+’s upbeat soccer coach Ted Lasso, who values relationships more than winning matches. Two years ago, Lundberg, 53, added kidney donor to her resume, immediately followed by organ donor mentor. Her first “client” was her husband Michael Lundberg, who became a “one-beaner” in February 2021 when he donated a kidney to an unknown recipient with five children. We recently spoke to Lundberg. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Why does someone seek out the services of a life coach? How long does it take to see results? People seek a life or performance coach to enhance themselves through changing habits. I provide the strategy and tips for self-esteem, communication, emotional intelligence and leadership. Results that get them to their best selves can take one session, six months or a year, depending on their goals and commitment. Everything begins with how you speak to yourself. What you think and say you can become, and that’s good or bad. You can’t love someone if you don’t love yourself. You barely knew Debra Palmer when you gave her your right kidney. How did you make that leap, from reading her Facebook posts to having a donor nephrectomy? I knew nothing about Debra other than she did good things in the community and was active in the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce. We’d never spoken beyond hello, never had a conversation. We’re very different…she’s a foodie, I’m an athlete; she’s a baby boomer and I’m Gen X. She’s very quiet about her work and I love to share my profession. When I read about her 24-year journey with kidney failure, I thought maybe I could mentor or coach her or just be supportive in some way. Then I got curious. I didn’t know anyone who had done it, but Michael and I were in a bone marrow transplant registry and were already organ donors on our driver’s licenses.
People say it’s the most selfless thing you can do. I say it’s the most self-aware thing you can do. Really, it’s the best use of my kidney, made sense and felt right.
There’s a very cool mentoring group from all over the world called Kidney Donor Athletes. They travel together and a bunch of them just went to Mount Kilimanjaro, and now we Zoom with them.
Walk us through the donor process.
The Lundbergisms you send out every weekday, such as “Desire + Dedication + Discipline = Dreams Realized,” where do they come from?
I ordered a testing kit through Amazon without thinking too much about it and let her know I was Type A+. Michael and I talked about the side effects of donation; the most common is depression. You go through this continual testing and get caught up in all the energy, then as soon as you make the donation, your part is done and it becomes all about the recipient and their recovery. I spent a week in Tampa General undergoing tests and scans and psychological and physical assessments. You have appointments with a nephrologist, surgeon, pharmacist and a nutritionist. You have to limit your protein intake forever and you can’t take certain drugs like Advil, no anti-inflammatories. As an athlete, that was the biggest surprise. So by February 2020 you were ready to donate when COVID hit. What happened next? Surgery was put off until Aug. 6 and I was home the next day. We were told full recovery could be six months to a year but I was running again on Day 15. I was thankful I could share a spare and I started to counsel others deciding if kidney donation is right for them. No judgment because it’s a big deal. Michael was the first person I mentored who went fully through with it. We’re very competitive…like playing golf every week to see who will mow the lawn.
People wonder, and sometimes, so do I, but they truly are the way my brain works, not in fortune cookie snippets, but from being aware, making my own mistakes, sorting through and simply seeing an experience clearly. For over 12 years, they are a “wake-up” for those who want to read them. And they can also watch a less than 60-second video on social media. Some of the most popular are about being true to ourselves. Do you just love Ted Lasso? Why do you think the show has become such a phenomenon? The Lasso Way is genuine, pure and positive, embracing change, being brave and wanting people to be and do their best, so yes, I love it. My running partner Lynn said, “You aren’t corny like that, but you are a version of Ted Lasso by seeing the best in each person.” That was a compliment! Mistakes happen, humor assists us all… relationships matter and confidence matters at all ages and in all positions. You can’t help but root for Ted Lasso, and so I appreciate all the people who root for kindness, support and me through all I have done. Plus, I am known for wearing Louboutins, and Rebecca (Ted’s boss) wears them, so that makes for a wink in my book.

Aston Martin DBX
STIRRED, NOT SHAKEN STORY AND PHOTOS BY PETER COUTURE
IN
the automotive world, trends seem to roll out like so many vehicles off the assembly line.
Sport utility vehicles, once a trend, now are the family hauler of choice. Such success, inevitably, has led us to all manner of SUVs, including posh performance models from brands like Bentley, Maserati and Lamborghini. Now into this niche of “super SUVs” comes another storied marque: Aston Martin. The brand preferred by Mr. Bond introduced its sleek DBX as a 2021 model, proclaiming it would combine versatility and indulgence with the performance of cars made famous by 007.
50 / bay
Aston Martin, a brand synonymous with James Bond, does not disappoint with its foray into the ultra-luxury SUV market. The DBX grabs attention and delivers on appearance, comfort and power. It has a twin-turbo V-8 and a nine-speed transmission.
And like those Astons, the DBX draws attention.
area of Florida where ultra-luxury SUVs are as common as tourists, but our Satin Lunar White DBX was a first for him.
While parking the DBX on a lunch outing, we were asked: “Is that an Aston Martin you’re driving?” Our fellow diner said he was from an
The SUV is also a first for the brand, which it hopes will entice a new segment of buyers to Aston Martin ownership.
To that end, the British manufacturer took a clean-sheet approach to the DBX. The result is evident in the design, where a long wheelbase and low roof line create a sleek profile that allowed our DBX to stand out even in a parkinglot row of white SUVs. The look is all Aston Martin, from the homage to the brand’s
heritage in the form of a side strake above the front wheels to a long nose whose curvaceous hood ends in the familiar iconic grille. Still, the sleek look of the midsize DBX can be deceiving, as the cabin is surprisingly roomy in both the front and rear seats. Those seats are swathed in fine leather — long an Aston strength — that can be complemented by your choice of luxury trim, from metal to wood to carbon fiber. But if the DBX invokes the luxury of an Aston Martin, does it also perform like one? Its twinturbo V-8, an updated version of the one from Mercedes-AMG that the DBX shares with its DB11 and Vantage siblings, does not disappoint. The 542-horsepower V-8 is mated to a ninespeed transmission and provides fierce acceleration with an exhaust note to match — especially when driven in Sport+ mode. And here’s a sentence that sounds jarring to the ear: This Aston’s six driving modes include Terrain and Terrain+ should your wanderings take you to the country club or the backcountry. This off-
pavement ability is facilitated by the standard all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension that allow the driver to adjust ride height. Oh, and the DBX has a towing capacity of nearly 6,000 pounds. Still, all that power would be squandered if the DBX didn’t have composed road manners. It’s surprisingly nimble in the corners: We were forced to make an abrupt lane change at highway speeds — did someone lose a mattress on I-75? — and the SUV’s grip never wavered. When not revealing its driving dynamics, the DBX can also nimbly adapt to your lifestyle. Among the available accessory options: a package for pet owners that includes a portable washer to keep furry friends and the SUV’s interior clean. Then there’s an Events package that mounts rear-facing seats in the cargo area and comes with food and dining storage — including a chilled compartment — for the discerning spectator. Cheers! The price starts below $200,000 but can quickly increase with a host of interior and exterior options.
The DBX has plenty of room. There’s even an Events package that mounts rear-facing seats in the cargo area. Photo courtesy of Max Earey
Yet the DBX brings a new choice to the luxury market — the practicality of an SUV and the cachet of an Aston Martin. One might say it’s a trend-setter.

WINTER GETAWAY, DESERT DELIGHT

ooking for a winter getaway but your knees and aversion to the cold rule out a ski vacation? Try Phoenix and its upscale neighbor Scottsdale.
With its craggy mountains and desert landscape, the Phoenix area provides a striking contrast to Florida but with the same delightful winter weather — daytime highs in the 70s. And as one of the nation’s largest metro areas, it’s replete with fine dining,

great shopping, outstanding museums and world-class resorts. A friend and I spent a long weekend in late fall at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas. Thanks to my Hilton Honors membership, we were upgraded at no cost to a twobedroom, two-bath villa with a full kitchen, private patio and a pool just a few steps away. The villa could easily have accommodated a family. Other fabulous Scottsdale resorts include the Phoenician, with panoramic views of Camelback Mountain and Paradise
Valley, and the classic Arizona Biltmore, designed in the 1920s by a protege of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Scottsdale is a shopper’s mecca. Fashion Square, one of the West’s largest malls, has everything you’d find at Tampa’s International Plaza and much, much more. Lining Fifth Avenue in the city’s Old Town district are numerous boutiques along with restaurants, cafes and galleries. But our favorite stop was TBC, which bills itself as the “finest in luxury resale” — in other words,
an upscale consignment store. The first dress we saw on entering was a one-of-akind strapless Balmain. Price: $18,000. That and racks full of Versace, Chanel and other couture fashions speak to the great wealth in Scottsdale, where mountainside mansions can top $20 million. In downtown Phoenix, 25 minutes from Scottsdale via broad palm-lined streets, we spent an afternoon visiting the city’s stunning Phoenix Art Museum with its vast collection of works ranging from the Renaissance to modern day. A must-see here, especially for dollhouse lovers, are the miniature rooms that replicate in amazing detail an Art Deco Manhattan apartment, an 18th century French music room and other period settings. Among 100 rooms designed by Indiana native Narcissa Niblack Thorne, they are made to 1/12 scale and even include original artwork. The Phoenix Art Museum is stunning both inside and out. Photo courtesy of Airi Katsuta We enjoyed lunch in the museum’s Palette Restaurant, which has seating both indoors and in a lovely courtyard, before heading to the nearby Heard Museum. Founded in 1929 to house Dwight and Mae Heard’s personal collection, it has grown to be among the foremost museums of Native American art and culture. Exhibits here include exquisite jewelry, hundreds of Kachina dolls and a sobering look at the 19th century boarding school experiences of Native American children. If you want to get some exercise, the area has more than 200 golf courses and challengingyet-scenic hikes in the mountains. But my friend opted for a pedicure and I for a shampoo and blow dry at Scottsdale’s elegant Spa Lamar, Arizona’s largest resortstyle day spa. With its low humidity, Arizona has one big advantage over Florida: Every day is a great hair day!

Derek and Marcea Hennecke offered the use of their “car barn.” Photos by Boyzell Hosey
A private Tampa garage that houses rare cars was the site of a Tampa Bay Times donor reception.
Times Publishing Donor reception Staunch supporters of a free press, Marcea and Derek Hennecke occasionally donated to the Tampa Bay Times. But when they decided to substantially up the amount, they offered more than money: They said the Times could host a donor reception at the private garage where they keep their collection of rare cars, including a 1972 Ferrari Dino and a 1972 Maserati Ghibli. “I just feel really strongly that journalism is essential to democracy and that any country that doesn’t have a strong free press doesn’t have democracy,” said Marcea, whose background is in journalism and public relations. “The Times has broken numerous stories that have changed our community, and we need to support the Times.” The Henneckes joined other donors, potential donors and Times executives and staffers at a November event that showcased the paper’s award-winning work as well as the couple’s “car barn” and collection of vintage vehicles. Both Henneckes have long love affairs with cars. Marcea’s brother was a partner in RM Sotheby’s, now the world’s largest classic car company. Her husband was just 16 when he fixed up his first car — a Triumph Spitfire “that left more oil on the driveway than in the car,” he said. As Derek built his biotechnology business, the Henneckes moved around so much that each of their three daughters was born in a different 66 / bay
country: Mexico, Holland and the couple’s native Canada. After the company was sold, they decided to collect cars, and in 2018 built the garage north of Tampa International Airport. It can comfortably house 15 vehicles and includes office space (he remains active with biotech startups), a theater and a bar that make it suitable for hosting charity and other events. “We love the stories of these cars and the excitement of bringing people in and showing the cars off and telling their stories,” Marcea said. The first car the couple bought together was a 1965 Porsche 356 convertible. “We drive it everywhere,” she said, “depending on the weather.” They profess not to have any favorites, but some cars definitely stand out. Among them: a 1953 white Chevy Corvette with a six-cylinder engine and a cherry red interior. One of the first 300 Corvettes off the assembly line, it is among the only survivors. Then there’s the 1967 Rolls-Royce Phantom 5. Nicolae Ceausescu, dictator of the Soviet satellite Romania, had it built, but Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev thought the huge limo, one of just 400 made, was too “capitalist of a

car,’’ as Derek puts it. Rolls-Royce typically didn’t accept returns but took it back after Soviet officials agreed to buy some less showy vehicles. The Phantom, which eventually made its way to the United States and racked up more than 180,000 miles, was once driven by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The oldest car in the Henneckes’ collection is a 1914 Chalmers, built by a Detroit company that later merged with Chrysler. Perhaps the most exhilarating one to drive is a 1957 Mercedes 300 SL with a 250-horsepower engine, extremely powerful for the time. “Many consider it the first super car,” Derek said. “It makes the palms sweat.” The Times event raised almost $100,000, with $75,000 coming from the Hennecke Family Foundation and $10,000 from a friend of the couple who was among the guests. “I feel very passionate about the importance of journalism,” Marcea said, “and especially local journalism.” — Susan Taylor Martin

The nonprofit event, along with Tampa’s annual FARA Energy Ball, supports research into Friedreich’s ataxia, an inherited disease that damages the nervous system. — Susan Taylor Martin
