APRIL 2018
Welcome to our annual Homes issue, with stories and photos of beautiful houses from Tampa to St. Petersburg to the beaches. Each luxurious living space is different, with views of a city skyline, the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. We have modern and historical, high-rise condo and expansive beach house, bustling family home and retiree retreat. But there is a common thread — these homes are all designed and appointed for gatherings with family and friends. Judy Vezmar has numerous guest rooms and a second kitchen, a tradition in her father’s native Serbia, to help with entertaining. The Stross family designed an outdoor oasis around the pool with remote-control screens, so that even when bugs crash the party, it keeps going. The Muzzillo home has a sports court, movie theater and numerous kitchens where 60 moms
and daughters made Christmas cookies in December. The Hechts, from Chicago, were looking for a retirement place in Florida and chose a 1912 Mediterranean home in St. Petersburg over a house in Miami. They thought it would be easier to become part of the Tampa Bay community. Along with saluting homes, this issue also pays respects to the environment, because it comes out on Earth Day. Our spread on balcony gardens shows how to enhance your home with plants, from succulents to Swiss chard, within a confined space. With Mother’s Day coming up, Bay offers local gift ideas for mom that also will please Mother Nature. Think a basic gardening class, silky soft undergarments made from bamboo, and organic skin care. There’s a new option for eating al fresco for
Mother’s Day this year that also supports the community. The Friends of Sunken Gardens are hosting a fundraising brunch on the historic roadside attraction’s picturesque brick pavilion under shady trees. Families can enjoy a buffet and live jazz by Henry Ashwood, with all of the $60 per person cost going to help build a Children’s Educational Garden. Whenit’scompleted, kidswillenterthroughagrottoto reachtheirspecialgardenbehindtheoldamphitheater. Vegetablebedswillteachthemaboutthefoodcycle, they willlearnaboutcompostingandexploreahenhouse thatteachesbirdcare. There’salsogoingtobeaclimbing sculpturenamedMactheTurtleandawormbin.(Ican alreadyhearthehappyexclamationsof“gross!”) When my three children were younger, I walked them at least once a week to Sunken Gardens, even before Great Explorations opened at the same site. It was a big, safe, pretty place for them to really run around, follow a mysterious path and kick a ball without worrying about traffic. We could also always find shade somewhere for a juice box break.
The flamingos were the highlight, of course. I’m happy the Friends of Sunken Gardens raised $60,000 a few years ago to “restock the flock” when only two of the exotic birds remained. Now the group has raised $25,000 and needs $75,000 more to develop this garden. I’d sure like to help out by spending Mother’s Day there. (Hint, hint.) St. Petersburg artist Ya La’ford, who we feature in Faces, has a new perspective on Mother’s Day, as she is in the process of adopting. We ventured slightly outside our circulation area to Orlando, which is home to one of the last dollhouse stores in the state. The miniature pieces are so detailed, down a marble chess set and Japanese lantern. ost nights of the week, Robin Wiltshire chooses between organically grown arugula, Swiss chard, romaine, red leaf lettuce and black-seeded simpson. She’s not eating at a farm-to-table restaurant, just stepping out on the balcony of a downtown St. Petersburg condo to a flourishing vegetable garden. “I just pick a few leaves every night for a dinner salad,” said Wiltshire, 49, who is the assistant director of Wunderfarms, four community gardens that grow vegetables for food banks. She’s quick to say you don’t need her experience and knowledge to grow food at home. Everything she and her fiancé, architect Tim Clemmons, grow started from seeds. Carrots were one-and-done. They only offer one harvest. The cauliflower has produced several heads as well as very tasty leaves that can be sautéed. The lettuces offer a steady supply because the more they are picked, the more they grow. Even in the hot summer months, tomatoes and herbs including rosemary, thyme and basil, thrive. Beets were the only things Wiltshire tried that didn’t take. The plants grow in three horse troughs bought on Amazon for about $100 each. Wiltshire credits her success to the sea grass she collects on North Shore Beach to layer in the tubs. “It’s a barrier for weeds, it holds in moisture, and it’s like a slow release of fertilizer,” she explained. “All those tiny, little sea creatures are decomposing.” —KatherineSnowSmith

She had never bloomed before, so when I saw it, I was so excited I called the neighbors over. … Someone gave this one to me. It looks like a Dr. Seuss plant. … Somebody sent me this little guy. He’s cute. … A lot of these are very oddly shaped. Succulents are more interesting than they are pretty.” There are more than 85 pots, each holding anywhere from one to seven succulents. he view from Henry Lewis’ twin balconies in the Channel District is a far cry from his home on Lake Maggiore in Asconna, Switzerland. Still the jet-setter relishes the front-row seat to downtown Tampa’s renaissance and its skyline dotted with construction cranes. “I can see the ships in the port and the city all lit up at night,” said Lewis, who designed and built the four-story business and residence in 2000, the first mixed-use building in the district in nearly a half-century. The Tampa native, president and owner of City Blue Print, pursued a European “live, work and walk” vision, putting his business on the first floor and a 6,000-square-foot penthouse on the top. In-between levels are used for storage or rented for office space. There is a six-car private garage on the ground floor. For Lewis, the 40- by 18-foot balconies are like his back yards —, one anchored by an eightperson spa; the other, accessed through the dining room, is furnished as an outdoor living room with nautical blue, custom-made leather lounges and chairs. “Everything’s right here,” Lewis said, “a grill for dinner, heaters for the winter, portable air conditioning for the summer.”

Travertine tile covers the floors. “A friend and I bought a whole quarry in Pakistan and we each took a portion,” Lewis said. Between extreme afternoon sun and high winds, plus Lewis’ constant travel, maintaining greenery has always been a challenge. The plantfilled, blue-ceramic planters are weighted down with dirt and rock to prevent them from blowing over. “I’ve gone through various types of palms, large and small, and shell succulents,” Lewis said. “All chosen for low maintenance and they can take the wind which is much stronger when you are 60 feet up in the air. That’s why you don’t usually see foliage on any high balcony.” Lewis says he’s studiously hands-on and always learning more. “It took years to figure out what would grow,” he said. “I originally had triple palms but they outgrew the balcony and I had them lowered to the ground floor where they are now 50 feet tall.” Handsome balustrades enclose both balconies, exact replicas of the iconic Bayshore Boulevard design. “I had a concrete company make a mold of the Bayshore balustrade and reproduce it for me,” Lewis said. “It creates an illusion but it’s totally private.” —AmyScherzer

They became friends with a couple from St. Petersburg and the Hechts told them they were coming to Florida soon to look for a retirement home in Miami.

Real estate agents Don and Sarah Howe rent the house they sold to a couple from Chicago who aren’t quite ready to retire.
“We both had layovers on the way back in Miami and were planning to meet in the (American Airlines) Admirals Club,” Gail Hecht said. “I got a text that they were stuck in customs and couldn’t meet us but said we needed to look in St. Petersburg.” The new friends, Michele and Brooke Hoover, passed along the name of local real estate agent, DonHowe. Howe, who is in business with his wife Sarah, soon called the Hechtsandaskedwhattypeofhousetheywanted. “We have a place up in Michigan on the lake, that’s our beach,” David explained. “We weren’t looking for hurricanes with something on the water. We wanted something withcharacterthatdidn’tlooklikeeveryoneelse’shouse.” (That’s not surprising, because the couple’s home in the La Grange Park suburb of Chicago is a brick Victorian with awraparoundporch.) Howe sent them pictures of one house that was deemed “just so-so,” then called a week later after going to an open houseforbrokersforahomeabouttohitthemarket. “It was the most unique house I’ve been in,” Howe recalled. “There was something that made you say ‘wow’ in everyroom.”

Stained-glass windows. Arched doorways. Pecky cypress beams. Built-in bookcases and glass cabinets. Wrought iron balconies. High, coffered ceilings. A regal fireplace in the oversized living room. A 12-foot-deep pool. A patio fountain with mosaic accents. The home’s gray tile floor — the small, colorful tiles have birds and flowers interspersed throughout — is identical to the one in the lobby of the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club. Howe sent photos and video of the house to the Hechts and said there already was a cash offer on it. “We thought ‘this is an amazing house, there’s got to be something wrong with it,’” David recounted. Knowing they could negate the deal if something arose in the inspection, the Hechts made their own cash offer and it was theirs. The next day, Gail headed to Miami for a conference and David flew to St. Petersburg to see their new house and new city. He’d been to the area more than 20 years ago when his parentshadaretirementplaceinClearwaterandwaspleasantly surprised with how much more vibrant St. Petersburg had become. He loved the Euclid house, but met Gail in Miami to look at real estate there one more time.

“Nothing stacked up,” he said. “That kind of house would be $1.75 million in Miami and we were trying to stay under $1 million,” he said. But they still weren’t sure until both spent another weekend in the Sunshine City. “We had wanted to have a place where there were people with different skin colors who speak different languages. I didn’t want to be with a lot of Midwesterners moving to Florida,” Gail said. St. Petersburg is clearly not as diverse as Miami. “It doesn’t have that sis-boom-bah,” she said. “But we did start to feel like if we are going to be retired we wanted to be part of a community, and if Miami is mostly a party atmosphere maybe that’s not” the best fit. So the couple spent that weekend asking restaurant staffers in their 20s and people in their 30s pushing baby strollers what they liked about St. Petersburg. They decided it was plenty vibrant, diverse and sophisticated. “The Howes did a great job finding us the house. They were able to identify very quickly what were looking for and great job introducing us to St. Petersburg,” David said. The Hechts went through with the purchase and got their dream house for $1.2 million. But since both were in

their early 60s when they bought the house, they weren’t ready to move to Florida. Upon learning insurance mandated the home be unoccupied, the new owners asked the Howes to try to rent it. Meanwhile, the Howes had just sold a large house for another client. Sarah, who learned home decor from her mother, an interior decorator, had staged that house and needed a place to stash the furniture. The Hechts said they could stage their home since it might help attract a renter. The house came alive with the addition of Sarah’s Palm Beach Chic furniture, including a large white-marble coffee table, white overstuffed sofas and bright artwork. “Before long, David asked if we would rent it from them,” Don explained. Though the couple owned their own home, they decided they could rent that out and move into the Euclid house. “I had one condition,” Sarah said. “I wanted to paint all the walls white.” The Hechts agreed, and now the Howes are happily living in the house that has a “wow” in every room, perhaps secretly hoping the Hechts are in no rush to move South.

or nearly 10 years, Clara and Billy Ferriolo lived in northwest Tampa, raising their two daughters in suburban Waterchase. Family fun at home always came first, but then came frequent getaways to their New York condo for a quick urban fix. “I’ve always been attracted to the city life,” said Clara, who had been living and working in Manhattan as a hair stylist when the couple began dating. Slowly, quietly, the search began, for a high-rise home to suit an active family. “We looked for two years before Billy found this,” said Clara, from their 5,000-square-foot penthouse on the 24th floor of the Alagon condominium on Bayshore Boulevard. “When we saw the view, it was love at first sight.” Hiring the Rob Bowen Design Group of St. Petersburg was probably the easiest decision in a yearlong renovation by Onicx Construction in 2015. Bowen previously designed their two other condos and knew their tastes. “We told him, “‘Do it as if this was your home, only more glamorous,” said Clara, 44. “I wanted Rob to take us out of our comfort zone to be modern, but warm and inviting because we have kids.”

Clara and Billy Ferriolo’s high-rise aspirations were nurtured in New York City.
The result: contemporary style with 24-7 livability. The collaboration was ideal, said Billy, 45, who is quick to point out that his input was mostly limited to writing checks. “Happy wife, happy life,” he said, recalling his only request was not to forget the only male in house, because the couple have two preteen daughters and Clara’s mother also lives with them. He made his mark in the automotive business by developing search-engine marketing that matches buyers and sellers on the internet and has helped transform the industry. Their home is decorated in a stunning black-and-white scheme with gold, magenta and eggplant accessories.

“All the elements are classic throughout, but not stark,” said Bowen, who commissioned custom furniture, lighting and flooring from prominent local and international artisans. The elevator opens into a foyer gleaming with black-lacquer doors, crown molding and wainscotting. Houndstooth patterns cover the walls, and glass and marble tiles form giant medallion shapes. Overhead, two Dali-esque Murano glass chandeliers provoke closer looks. The striking design is from the exclusive Italian Andromeda factory’s Meltmeee collection. “We don’t collect a lot of art, but these are my art pieces,” Clara said. Metallic-woven draperies shimmer beneath an eye-catching polyhedral glass and bronze Gabriel Scott chandelier. The fun furniture in the far corners, a pair of black chests, comes from one of Madonna’s favorite designers, London company Jimmie Martin. They feature the family’s names graffitied on with razors and nails. Painted across one in huge gold letters is LOVE U and, across the other, 4 EVER. Large, black-rippled metal mirrors hang above each chest. Broad brush strokes of bright magenta zigzag across a huge canvas by Paula Bowen, the designer’s sister-inlaw, and provide the perfect pop of color.

Floor-to-ceiling hand-cut, acrylic panels separate the sitting area from the dining room. “My idea,” said Billy, for an unobstructed view when dining at the Italian-made marble table, which is surrounded by magenta cowhide chairs. The interesting glass orbs above are hand-blown by artist Lindsay Adelman. “We don’t do much cooking,” said Clara, pointing out how the compact kitchen merges with the family room, “but the kids like to make cake pops with Billy’s mom.” The glass breakfast table is circled by acrylic barrel chairs and acrylic bar stools line up at the black-granite kitchen counter. Vintage bronze glass tile by Ann Sachs fills the backsplash of a marble-recessed cooktop. White-lacquer doors cover the pantry and refrigerator. A velvet sofa by Minotti covered in eggplant velvet faces a custom-built television base made by T2theS in St. Petersburg. Push a button and the 75inch television recedes into the artful creation. The adults’ and children’s bedrooms are on opposite sides of the residence. Daughters Ava, 12, and Lola, 10, helped Mom pick out the furniture and wall coverings. The master suite goes bold with a massive brass bed with a black-fox fur headboard. Gold-leaf swirls sparkle on crystal-beaded wallpaper. Bowen keeps the contemporary beat in the master dressing room with its custom closets and vanity coated with automobile lacquer. “I was so inspired by her shoe collection,” said Rob Bowen. “For me, they’re art.” Can you say Christian Louboutin? By the way, Billy’s no slacker in the shoe department. The master bath with its bayfront views and unusual bathtub — it fills from a spigot in the ceiling — is inviting whether starting or ending the day. “I love every project,” Bowen said, “but this is as fabulous as the Ferrillos.”

As the floor plan evolved, multiple kitchens became a matter of everyday convenience for the couple’s happy blend of yours, mine and ours that includes 10 children, ages 13 to 30ish, and three grandchildren. “We both come from families that cherish time together for meals,” she said, delightedly noting that two adult children and two of her siblings live just a few blocks away. The home of Christy and Jason Stross is a balance between his taste and hers, luxury and kid friendliness, old-fashioned common sense and the latest technology. The 7,300-square-foot home on the water in St. Petersburg conjures a rustic French country house with its wide plank floors and exposed wood beams, yet with 16 crystal chandeliers and a winding staircase, it is still very elegant.
Rustic and traditional elements integrate with a “little girl glam” in the home. Exhibit A: Christy’s and Jason’s master bedroom.

“Jason likes that rustic, more traditional look, and I like to have a little girl glam,” said Christy Stross. The combination compliments their family of two older sons and a baby daughter quite well. The boys’ rooms each have Lego lofts with ladders made of galvanized pipes, while the nursery has glitter on the ceiling and a distressed wood sign in the bathroom that reads “anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink.” Jason is a commercial and residential developer. His company, West Central Design, built the house. Christy is a lawyer-turned-chief legal officer who owns and operates St. Petersburg-based Youfit health clubs, which has more than 100 locations in 16 states. Jason both thanks, and jokingly blames, her for their dream house. The family first lived at the beach, then moved to a home on the Vinoy resort’s golf course. After living there for a while, Christy noticed an older, dilapidated house for sale on the water. “The house was in terrible shape. But I went and looked at the view and it was amazing,” she recounted. “I showed him the house on a Thursday and on Tuesday he called and said we could buy it. The view sold him.”

They tore down the old house and started from scratch, combining numerous floor plans and their family’s wish list. He wanted the 22-foot foyer with windows at the top to allow for natural light. She wanted mirrors within the lattice woodwork on the refrigerator doors and three chandeliers in the kitchen. They both wanted the Lego lofts that offer a second story in each boy’s room, where there are tables and floor space for thousands of the little plastic bricks. “I had a Lego loft when I was a kid. It was about 12 feet by 12 feet,” Jason said. “Have you ever stepped on a Lego?” Christy asked. “Now all the Legos are upstairs and off the floor.” And safely out of baby sister’s reach. The couple hired an artist to hand-paint everything from wood beams (actually, architectural foam) to the feet on the claw-foot tub to create a distressed, antique look throughout the house. The house is grand with beautiful art, including Frederic Remington statues, but it is by no means a museum. Each child has his or her own full bath, but they all end up in the master bathroom with the claw-foot tub and hand-painted Mexican tiles most nights.
The pool on Tampa Bay, above, is family-friendly because its deck features artificial turf, which is easy on little feet and also serves as a design element.

The boys’ bedrooms feature Lego lofts with access by a ladder made of pipes. Says Jason Stross: “I had a Lego loft when I was a kid.”
The playroom’s crystal chandelier echoes its Peter Pan theme. All aboard for the next voyage to Neverland.
There was a gender-reveal party held at the Stross home. Does the decor of the nursery, with its fabric-accented ceiling, give you any hints? Left, the master bathroom has a walk-in shower and a claw-foot tub. Each child has his or her own full bath, but they all end up in there most nights.
The playroom has a Peter Pan theme, with a crystal chandelier shaped like the ship headed for Neverland. Peter, Wendy and the boys are painted at the top of the chalk board wall, flying around the phrase “never grow up.” Builtin bins hold books and toys. Each is labeled. There are two art carts on wheels, so the elementaryaged boys can roll them to the kitchen table when they are working on homework or school projects. At their previous house, the playroom was upstairs. In the new house, Christy and Jason wanted it downstairs, where the family spends most of its time. Christy and Jason designed the outdoor pool area from previous experience, too. Artificial turf outlines the pool, so there’s always a soft, cool spot for little feet. The garage has a full-sized door not just in the front facing the driveway, but also in the back by the pool. This makes for easy storage and transport of pool toys, fishing gear, boats and other outdoor accessories.

A few of the must-have kitchen features for Christy Stross: The three ornate, cut-glass chandeliers that preside over the counter, as well as mirrors on the refrigerator doors at right that are framed by lattice woodwork.
The terrace above the pool has its own bathroom and perhaps the most ingenious feature in the house: screens built into the arched openings in the stone walls. These go up and down with the touch of a remote control for days when Florida’s insects are merciless. “The house is designed for entertaining and everyday living,” Jason said. “We like to entertain a lot,” Christy added. The party they hosted to reveal the gender of their third child is evidence of that. The couple chose not to read what the ultrasound technician silently scribbled on a piece of paper because they wanted to be surprised with everyone else. She took it to a fireworks store in East Tampa and asked the salesman to fill a box with blue fireworks if the paper said “boy” and pink if it said “girl.” When the sky burst full of pink stars and flairs, they were shocked along with their guests.
If the summer’s outdoor pests become a problem, the screens around the outdoor entertainment area can be raised and lowered by a remote control .

DECO DREAM
A Murano glass chandelier on the third floor of Judy Vezmar’s beach home looms above what is its art-deco signature — this spiral staircase.

udy Vezmar’s home on the Gulf of Mexico is a beautifully blended scrapbook of places and people she loves. The Art Deco design is a nod to her years in London, where she found favorite pieces of furniture from the Savoy Hotel at an antique store. The second-story hallway’s glass ceiling encases hand-blown works from Venice and reminds her of Italy, as well as the Chihuly Collection in St. Petersburg.
GLOW
The home has aquatic visions both literal — the view of the beach from the formal dining table at right — and figurative, such as the guest bathroom, above, with its shower walls of blue tile in various hues. At right: the second-floor landing.

A Serbian flag in the second kitchen is a shoutout to her father’s homeland, where no matter the size of the house, there’s always a second kitchen to aid in hosting big family gatherings. The rendering of a stained-glass window, made from wax and paint, hangs over the front door and is designed to mimic the windows in the Sagrada Familia, a beautiful cathedral in Barcelona designed by Antoni Gaudí. She sees Phillip from Paris, Christian from London and T.J. from Australia every time she pauses at the Murano glass chandelier that hangs on the third floor above the spiralstaircase.Theyarethreeofthecolleagueswhobought the top tier of the stunning light fixture as a gift when she left her job as chief executive officer of Lexus Nexus International a few years ago.

“I lived in Europe for 17 years, so I’ve seen a lot of unique and unusual things that I wanted to incorporate into my dream house,” Vezmar said. “When I saw this Art Deco table, I could see Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing.” Along with a small flat in London, Vezmar lived in apartments in Chicago and New York over the years. Along the way, sheboughtpiecesofartandfurniturethatspoketoher. Four years ago, she decided to build her dream house, with a place for all the special things and people in her life. Architect Daniel Thayer Dawson and home builder David Brandon brought to life the home she drew on her iPad, with tiered ceilings, detailed railings and streamlined, modern lines throughout the design. “I wanted to build a house that would fit all of my family and all of my friends,” Vezmar said. “This house is never empty. Even when I’m gone. There are always people here.” With five bedrooms, there’s a place for everyone in her close-knit family as well as friends she has met from all over the world.

Judy Vezmar’s home has both the stately appearance and the amenities to become a beach icon.
Vezmar’s affection for Tampa Bay was born more than 20 years ago, when she was living in Chicago. She came here on business with her sister. They decided the area would be a good place for their parents to escape Chicago winters. “We all started coming here and fell in love with it,” Vezmar said of her two sisters, parents and extended family. In 2014, when she decided to build, Florida’s Gulf Coast felt like home. The house took 18 months to construct. “I was still traveling everywhere for work, but my dad was here and called me every night, no matter where I was in the world, to update me on the progress,” she said, explaining the hard hat on a side table that reads “Nick” on the front and “Dad” on the back, in honor of her father, Nick Mihajlovich. A stay at a hotel in South Africa was the inspiration for the natural light in the bathrooms. Vezmar’s suite there included a bathroom behind the main room, with louvered blinds that could be open if a guest was solo. Thus, when the shades were open, the view and light from the main room’s windows came in.

Vezmar has white, wooden shutters in her master bathroom, while remote-controlled shades separate bathrooms from guest bedrooms. She had art printed on the custom shades. Each bedroom has its own character. In the “underwater room,” the bathroom walls are covered in thousands of different shades of blue, round tiles. Another room with more of an Art Deco flair has a 1920s couple dancing on the bathroom shade. Two simple curved legs form a V-shape under the blue-tinted sink basin. The same V-shape is replicated with blue tile down the middle of the shower. The home’s third floor features an open kitchen, living room and dining room with sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico. One room, a study of sorts, pays homage to Commonwealth countries. The walls are covered with pictures from family photo safaris in Africa. A wingback chair was made in a slightly ramshackle shop in London. “The very proper owner said, ‘First Madam, I want to measure your rake,’ ” Vezmar recounted. “I said ‘What in the world is that?’”
EXHALE
Choose your water view: The Gulf of Mexico is but a short stroll down a well-trod path to the beach from the home’s swimming pool.
He explained that the distance from a person’s waist to the bend behind the knees is called a “rake.” While they perused fabrics and design, Vezmar kept looking at a door with deadbolt locks from top to bottom. The owner explained proudly that the shop “once had the great honor” of making furniture for Prince William and Prince Harry when they were small boys. Everything had to be kept under very tight lock and key while in production. Vezmar’s home has a much more modern security system, with cameras in every room and all over the property. She can also remotely control those, the lights, fans, heating, cooling and window blinds. For a little touch of mystery and whimsy, Vezmar wanted a secret passageway in her house. The cozy Commonwealth room seemed the best place for it. So the bookshelf there

swings open as a back entrance to a hall bathroom off of the kitchen. She has other touches of whimsy throughout the home. Upon entering the house, at the base of the three-story spiral staircase, there’s a pool made from round glass stones embedded in the floor. Three brass sculptures of cliff divers, each about 8 inches high, are perched on the edge of three different stairs as though they are about to jump. The home also features an elevator with a window. The wall behind it is painted with caricatures that depict Vezmar, her parents, two sisters and other family members as sea creatures, swimming in the ocean. The Serbian flag in the second kitchen, custom made by Gulf Tile & Cabinetry, is another signature mark. “No matter who lives here after me,” Vezmar said proudly, “they will know a Serbian girl once lived here.”

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
M
any years ago, while stationed with the Air Force in the Bahamas, Ron Mummert found there wasn’t a lot to do in his free time. So he started ordering dollhouse furniture kits by mail and putting them together. What began as a time-killer turned into an obsession and ultimately a thriving business. After he left the service, Mummert settled in Orlando. “I met some people who were starting a miniature club,’’ he recalls. “That’s how it all took off and it’s been good ever since.’’
What at first glance appears to be a framed painting of a European village scene is actually a diorama set into the wall of a linen closet at Ron Mummert’s Orlando home. At Christmas, he decorates the three-dimensional scene and motorizes the figures.

To walk through Ron’s Miniature Shop near downtown is to enter a world of exquisitely crafted houses 2 feet high, chairs the size of matchboxes, plates as tiny as dimes. Most of the miniscule furnishings now come from China, although English artisans still make the hand-painted sets of china that can cost as much as much as $500. The shop, started in 1989 and co-owned with Richard Laferriere, carries on a grand tradition of dollhouses that began in 16thcentury Europe with cabinet display cases of idealized rooms. The craft reached its epitome in 1924 with Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, an exact replica of a London townhouse down to the working lights, running water and tiny bottles in the wine cellar. A gift to the wife of King George V, the house is on permanent display at Windsor Castle. In this country, interest in dollhouses has begun to wane. Not so long ago, Florida had about 20 miniature stores including one in Dunedin. Now there are three: Ron’s and shops in Tavares and Cocoa Beach. Even as American homes get bigger, people say they don’t have room for the standard one-twelfth-scale dollhouse. The most popular models now are “quarter-size’’ — a quarter-inch equals 1 foot, making them barely larger than a shoebox. These days, it’s mostly older women who come into the shop. But for those who love dollhouses, it is a magical place.
Mummert, co-owner of Ron’s Miniature Shop at 751 W Colonial Drive in Orlando, keeps this exquisite miniature recreation of an Oriental room in his own living room.
Tucked into a corner of Ron’s Miniature Shop is a small museum. Among the displays is this French chateau game room with tiny chess set. It was salvaged from a dollhouse that a customer’s dog had started to chew up. This Victorian-style dollhouse at left is assembled from a kit and is onetwelfth scale (1 inch equals 1 foot). The most popular dollhouse models now are much smaller.
Members of an Orlando-area miniatures club made this ornate room with busts flanking an arched doorway leading into a chandeliered parlor. It is in the small museum at Ron’s Miniature Shop.

AN ARTIST’S IMPACT
Ya La’Ford with her ECHOES environmental installation at the Chihuly Gallery in St. Petersburg. Photograph courtesy of VL4
Ya La’ford is a force of art across the country as well as in St. Petersburg, where she and her husband have lived the past five years to be close to family throughout Florida. She has dual citizenship in the United States and Jamaica, where she visits about once a month, and also has a studio in New York. Along with public installations in museums, her works are on display at several Fortune 500 companies. La’ford, who is in her 30s, is known for her intersection of disciplines. She works with paint, music, fabric, found objects, light and much more. She teaches communication law at the University of Tampa and art at St. Petersburg College. After moving to St. Petersburg, it didn’t take long for her to become entrenched in the community, serving on boards for the Museum of Fine Art, the Warehouse Arts District and Studio@620. Along with working, volunteering and traveling regularly, she’s in the process of adopting. Here’s a slice of her life from a conversation with Bay editor Katherine Snow Smith.

APRIL 2018
When did your interest in art begin? My mom said as soon as I had a pencil or crayon in my hand, I was doodling and drawing. I professionally started showing 15 years ago in Boston. I have a law degree, too. I got my law degree first, then I got my masters in fine arts. It has helped with the intensity and intention of my work. But it has also helped me think about how my work can impact the community. How does a law degree help with art? That seems so disciplined and art seems so free. In the law, you advocate and you have to think creatively outside the box to solve problems. I think that with paint, canvas, murals, spaces and installation, I am always thinking about how art can impact space and minds and how you can connect to other people and the community. How has your art made an impact in the community? I did Pitching Promises with the Rays. I was able to take artwork and have children think about their future through art. They helped me with a mural (in the main concourse behind leftfield at Tropicana Field) where they pitched paint and made a promise, and that promise will be realized in a decade or so. I have an upcoming project I’m doing with Nike. We will be doing a community engagement installation. I can’t say where. I have another community project for Fairmount, N.J. We are doing a large installation that is opening next month with architect David Adjaye, who designed the African-American museum in Washington, D.C. It is a large, 20-foot aluminum sculpture. In Pompano City, I’m in a program where I’m engaged in utilizing the power of art with the community. I introduced students to an engineer and we talked about the contrast of art and architecture and how you can find perspective through art and how an engineer uses it. The idea was introducing them to the idea of being an engineer and still staying creative. I was working with local students who would not otherwise be exposed to something like that. What are favorite exhibits you’ve created? I really loved an installation I did at the Chihuly. The show was called ECHOES. I also liked my show at Tampa Museum of Art. I have an upcoming show (opening June 1) at the Orlando Museum of Art. It will be an installation that explores the metaphysics of light and space with a sculptural element. I’ll use canvas, my self-made pigmentation, aluminum, LED (lighting). What do you think of St. Petersburg’s art scene? I’ve watched a renaissance happen here and it’s pretty amazing. It’s something different. Its not anything

expected. I think a lot more is going to happen. I think it’s happening in a very organic, beautiful way. There is a lot of outside-the-box thinking, that is what got us here. What is your advice to artists starting out? You need to be finding your own voice and not copying people. Stay true to yourself. No matter what anyone says about your artwork, you need to be continuing to rise to the occasion. You have to have the talent, but also the drive and passion and ability to finish. Getting your family to support you is super important overall. Everybody’s path is very different. One of the things that’s important about whatever you are doing is knowing how you are impacting humanity in a positive way. You are known for making your own pigmentation. How does that work? I carry a canvas wherever I go and make pigmentation. I make pigmentation out of whatever is around us. I’ll use the dirt or eggs or very unorthodox material. I like to find creativity in anything I’m around. My artwork is about connecting the intersection of all human lives. Maybe we look different, but it’s all about finding the best us. Some of my most fun installations have been in Cuba, Thailand, Egypt and Columbia. It’s all about finding a universal language. Sometimes you don’t even have to talk, you can communicate through art.

being there, doing that DeBartolo Family Foundation All Star Charity Gala More than 70 actors, athletes and other celebrities managed to make a formal fundraiser hosted by Eddie, Candy, Lisa and Nikki DeBartolo feel like a family reunion. The occasion was the DeBartolo family foundation’s 15th All Star Charity Gala on March 24 at the Marriott Waterside, where the ballroom made an elegant stage for ’50s-style crooner Chris Isaak. All funds from the $500-a-ticket bash remain in Tampa for scholarships, teacher supplies and grants to grass-roots nonprofits. Now about that family feel: NFL legend Jerry Rice asked Latisha Pelayo to marry him. Of course, she said yes. Rice wasn’t the only Hall of Famer in attendance. Say, is that Jim Brown dining with Mary Wilson of The Supremes?

“WHAT CAN I BRING?”

That’s the customary question when invited to someone’s house for dinner. Some ask it sincerely and confidently because they have a go-to dish that’s always a crowd-pleaser. Others ask while secretly crossing fingers, hoping the host will insist their presence is the only thing that’s expected. The question also is the name of a new cookbook: What Can I Bring?: Southern Food For Any Occasion Life Serves Up. “We bring something because that’s how we show our host how much we appreciate the time and effort they’ve given us,” Elizabeth Heiskell, the author and a caterer from the Mississippi Delta, told me when she was in town signing her book recently. In the Food & Drink issue of Bay coming June 10, local women and men tell us what they always bring. The favorite stand-bys are Southern, Egyptian, Italian and beyond. (Several say bringing wine is the best way to assure that you are invited back.) The issue will also feature some of the newest restaurants in the area, a local wine expert and much more to celebrate food and kick off the summer. — Katherine Snow Smith
