Many Tampa Bay residents escape the August heat in favor of cool, green mountains to the north or out west. For those of us who remain, there are still ways to enjoy our steamy habitat without melting. When my children were younger, I approached August like other mothers up north would January. Instead of snow days marooning us inside, we holed up in the air conditioning on what I called “heat days.” The craft box came out, we made cookies, watched old movies and built tents from blankets around every table and chair. We ventured out only to the pool, movie theater, library or a museum. Museums were my favorite escape because they gave us a chance to stretch our legs and minds for two or more hours in the cool and calm. Besides the climate control, our bounty of museums are great places to check out in August and September because they are less crowded.
This issue of Bay highlights the visiting and permanent exhibitions at more than 15 museums in our area. Perhaps now is the time to explore the ones you’ve never been to or haven’t frequented lately. You can extend your cooling-off period with lunch, dinner, beer or wine at the cafes within several museums. Your swimming pool, of course, is another way to cool off during these dog days of summer, or dip your toe into the ones we feature in a spread on some of the prettiest pools in the area. There’s also a story on how to cool off your pool area or patio, with more than just a breeze. A day at one of the many spas in the area will refresh you. O
utdoor relief from the heat with a blast of cool air and a spritz of water has been a welcomed wonder at theme parks and restaurants for a while now. But there are outdoor cooling systems designed for residential pools, patios and loggias as well, and they are becoming a more frequent perk for homes throughout Tampa Bay. “At first it was purely a high-end luxury item for mansions. Now people building homes in the 4,000-square-foot and up range are putting cooling systems in their patios,” said Al Erturk, president of A-NIKS Outdoor Comfort Solutions. “It’s like (indoor) air conditioning. When it first came out, only the rich had it, and now everybody has it.” His Tampa-based company has a system called TurboCool that lowers the outdoor temperature by at least 10 degrees and sometimes 20 degrees depending on the weather conditions. “Even though we use mist, it’s such a fine vapor that most of the time people don’t even know it’s mist,” Erturk said. “The TurboCool system delivers the air in such a way that the mist is diffused into the atmosphere and quickly evaporated. The flash evaporation happens typically two to four feet from the discharge point. You can sit comfortably beyond that and not get wet.”
Ken Metcalf of St. Petersburg is the mastermind behind the system. He invented the technology in 1996 after deciding there was great room for improvement to what was on the market at the time. “Fan-based systems that utilized a heavy mist and misting lines were the prevalent technology then,” he said. Metcalf ’s system, which A-NIKS bought in 2011, integrated air velocity and evaporation to create a dry, cool air. While his customers include Ferg’s Sports Bar & Grill, BellaBrava and Moon Under Water, Metcalf’s main focus was the residential market. The TurboCool system, which can be recessed into outdoor ceilings and pergolas, cools a 300-square-foot space and is priced between $5,000 and $6,500. Every 100 square feet after that costs around $1,500 more. A-NIKS also sells the standard fan and mist systems without the fast evaporation component. They start at $2,500 to $3,500 to cool a 300square-foot area and $600 more for every subsequent 100 square feet. But the TurboCool is what customers love the most, according to Erturk. “The evaporative process creates the cooling, kind of like an ocean breeze,” Metcalf said. “We thought it was a great solution for everybody’s patios.”

he sun goes down, the lights come up and suddenly you’re relaxing on the Italian Riviera . . . or in a South Tampa back yard with a titanic swimming pool reminiscent of the homeowners’ favorite vacation destinations. “They wanted to take cues from travels around the world to complement the Mediterranean influences of the waterfront residence, but with a pool they could actually use,” said architectural designer Thomas Everett Lamb. His vision of a cross-shaped infinity-edged swimming pool was one of the first drawings he completed for the house built in 2016 by Windstar Homes. The north-south axis allows swimmers a 50-foot lap lane anchored at one end with a concrete umbrella table and underwater stools. The shorter east-west axis flows from a shallow sun shelf at the east end across the pool toward Tampa Bay. Glazed porcelain tile in rustic Old World shades rim the unusual design. A trio of terraces connects the upper, main living level to the ground level, waterfront activities. An outdoor gourmet kitchen, dining table, fireplace and TV fill the top tier. The middle terrace holds a comfy sectional sofa and a fire table. The lush, landscaped pool level opens to the bay and an incomparable view of downtown Tampa and Bayshore Boulevard. “Some of the finest sunsets to be seen anywhere,” Lamb said. T
his beautiful infinity pool that spills into Tampa Bay is 7,000 miles away from Beijing, China, but that’s where its roots were born. Judy Barcia was in Beijing three years ago traveling with her husband, Dick, when she had a heart attack. She recovered with wonderful care at a private hospital — Dick Barcia, former senior vice president of operations at Tampa General Hospital, made sure of that. When they returned to their ranch in Brooksville, he was still shaken by the health scare and embraced the saying that “life is short.” “He said to me: ‘Where do you want to spend the rest of your life?’ ” Judy recounted. She thought of the yellow, two-bedroom block house on Tierra Verde they’d bought in 1996 to use as a rental property. She decided that was the place, but in a new house with plenty of room for their big Latin family to converge.

“That was in September, and by December we’d knocked down the house. He’s a man of his word,” she said, sitting next to the 53-foot pool behind their Caribbean-style home. “I wanted to be on an island. This is my island house. I’m in Hawaii or Fiji or somewhere.” The pool is flanked by a hot tub on one end and a shallow area with furniture and an umbrella on the other. The covered loggia next to it has a sitting area, dining area, kitchen and flat screen TVs mounted on the wall on each end. “You can float from one end to the other and not miss an inning,” Dick said. The other side of the pool, designed by Sekas Custom Pools, is bordered by a catch basin where water pours and then flows back into the main pool. Next to the catch basin lies Tampa Bay, and the pool appears to meet it seamlessly. “For Christmas pictures we line the grandkids along the edge and it looks like they are walking on water,” Dick said. The grandchildren, ages 14 to 25, gather often at the Tierra Verde home. After gorgeous sunsets over the Sunshine Skyway, the pool’s underwater lights come on and continually change through a spectrum of 24 colors. The lights, fans, fountains and camouflaged speakers inside rocks at the base of the palm trees are all orchestrated by a remote control. “Let me tell you, you can make those (speakers) blast. I have to tell my grandkids to bring it down,” Judy said with a laugh. “We love having everybody here.” — Katherine Snow Smith

hen the Morrisons moved from Indiana to St. Pete Beach 10 years ago, they fell in love with life on the Gulf of Mexico. Now they enjoy their renovated 1925 home even more since buying the lot next door and making way for a pool and loggia. “In the summer we have kids here every day,” said Tammy Morrison. “They go back and forth from the pool to the beach.” Her two teenagers and friends can play volleyball in the center of the pool since it’s just over four feet at its deepest. Younger guests like the sun deck, which holds about six inches of water. (Adults enjoy lounging there as well.) Morrison’s husband, Chris, is happy behind the grill in the loggia with the flat screen over the fireplace turned his way so he can watch whatever sports are airing. The pool has underwater bar stools that also face the TV. The outdoor area was created by landscape architect Phil Graham and Sekas Custom Pools. Since the city wouldn’t allow a higher wall, the pergola is there as a slight barrier from the street and foot traffic on the sidewalk. The plan was to add flowing, sheer curtains but Tammy said they feel they have enough privacy, even though passers-by stop to take photos from time to time. “But people are always so nice. They tell us how pretty it is,” she said. “During the day there is a lot of energy and fun. By nighttime the beach gets peaceful when all the tourists leave.” — Katherine Snow Smith

utdoor activities rival a five-star resort at this waterfront residence in the West Shore area of South Tampa. The homeowner and father of four adult kids enjoys “every water sport possible,” said architectural designer Thomas Everett Lamb, standing on the vast terrace overlooking an array of boats and jet skis moored at an extensive dock on Old Tampa Bay. Gas-lit tiki torches rim the property along the water’s edge, and there is a fire pit with wrap-around seating for sunset, bird and airplane watching. The view is spectacular, but the three-tiered, infinityedged swimming pool draws its share of oohs and aahs. “The upper-level spa spills into the intermediatelevel which spills down an 8-foot wall into the groundlevel pool,” said Lamb who designed the family retreat 12 years ago. The lower pool features a 50-foot lap lane and is adjacent to a 2,700-square-foot gym. Italian glass mosaic tiles gleam in a medley of aquatic blues. If the family and friends aren’t boating or swimming, they’re likely to be barbecuing in the outdoor kitchen, competing at ping pong or just chilling on a chaise longue. A fireplace, two televisions and misting fans round out the amenities. “It’s a destination for the family to come together but also to host large scale events, more often than not, benefitting worthy causes,” Lamb said. — Amy Scherzer

hough Tiffins pays homage to the people who created Disney’s Animal Kingdom by displaying their journals and sketches, the upscale restaurant can make you forget you are dining in the middle of a steamy theme park. Tiffins, an Indian word for a type of container used to carry food, is open for both lunch and dinner, but don’t be fooled by the T-shirts and flip-flops of the patrons: This is a splurge. With entrees starting at $29 and a wide variety of food, it’s a dining experience on par with the most high-end options at other parks. The restaurant opened about a year ago in the Discovery Island section of the Animal Kingdom park and sits right on the edge of the area that became the longawaited World of Avatar in May.

Like everything Disney, the 252-seat restaurant aims to be immersive, starting with three themed dining rooms: The Trek Gallery celebrates Asia, the Safari Gallery is all about Africa, and the largest, the Grand Gallery, is a tribute to the animals featured in the park as part of the Disney Conservation Fund. Each of the rooms is filled with travelthemed artwork. Diners leave with a postcard-sized sketch from a Disney Imagineer of travels that inspired the Animal Kingdom’s design. The adjoining Nomad Lounge is a real looker, with indoor and outdoor seating plus a gorgeous patio on which to sip a cocktail like the Annapurna Zing (gin, passion fruit puree, mint, lime juice and ginger beer, $8.50) and eat from a short menu of small plates. Also notable is a house beer, the Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Ale Draft ($8.75), a dark ale brewed with sorghum. The Black-Eyed Pea Fritters, with yogurt and a pep-
padew puree ($11), make for a hearty appetizer; a complimentary sweet focaccia served with pomegranate olive oil renders the Tiffins Signature Bread Service ($10) unnecessary. When it comes to entrees, there is a lot of variety, from the Wagyu Strip Loin and Braised Short Rib ($53) and the Berkshire Pork Tenderloin with a tamale and mole sauce ($39) to the Grilled Swordfish with carrot-coconut puree ($42) and Roasted Vegetable Curry ($29). The Duo of Lamb ($41), which contains a loin and a house-made sausage, came with a striking “leek ash” coating on one side of the plate. For dessert, the Lime Cheesecake ($10) isn’t your sweetest option, but it may be the best, the custardy cheesecake given texture by an almond-sesame tuile. Whether you drop in for just dessert, drinks or a full meal, Tiffins is an oasis of relaxing luxury in the midst of adventure that some might call chaos. night starting with sparkling samba dancers from Rio de Janeiro would seem destined to lose steam after such a kickoff, but the annual Collectors Choice dinner at the Museum of Fine Arts proved to be exciting up until the last minute with an unexpected round of fundraising and surprising art purchases.

HERE ARE THE RULES OF THE GAME The Collectors Circle, made up of donors who give $750 or more annually, gather at the museum for cocktails, dinner and contemplation of three pieces of art on the market. At the end of the night each member casts a vote for their favorite, and the one with the most support is bought with the circle’s funds. The party is open to anyone who wants to buy a $250 ticket, but only those in the Collectors Circle can cast a vote. If a couple votes, they must each donate $750 for two ballots or cast one joint vote. Around 120 people came out for this year’s gala, dubbed Flying Down To Rio. Two months before the big night, museum director Kristen Shepherd spent several days crisscrossing New York, meeting with art dealers and scouting works of art. “I had interest in about 15 to 20 works. I brought images and information back to my curatorial team and we discussed them all together. We considered everything from the quality of the works to how each would fit into the collection,” said Shepherd. “This year I was looking at American paintings, with a particular focus on female artists.” The curatorial team narrowed the large pool of contenders down to six, then Shepherd made the selection of the final three to present to the Collectors Circle. The dealers shipped the paintings to St. Petersburg for the night, and they were hung in the actual galleries where the museum’s curators would place them if they became part of the permanent collection.
MAKING A CHOICE Between bites of chorizo empanadas or spicy gazpacho shots and rhythmic music from steel drums, patrons milled through the Poynter and Smith galleries to see the works they would have a say in acquiring.

Under the Birches (1872) is an early piece by Edward Gay, an Irish-born artist who was part of the Hudson River School, a group of mid-19th century landscape painters. Margarett W. Sargent’s After Dinner, Paris (circa 1930), demonstrates her simplified forms, strong lines and broad washes of a light palette. Wash Day, New York City (circa 1925) by Marguerite Zorach brings Fauvist and cubist styles together. “She is the most well known artist of the three,” Barbara McCoy, an MFA patron and longtime volunteer docent, said of Zorach. “I have a name for this painting, Sex and the City,” joked her husband Fred McCoy, referring to the delicate lace hanging on a clothesline between two apartment buildings, then added that his idea would draw more votes than the actual title, Wash Day.
The expected favorite, Under the Birches earned the most votes and would be purchased for $55,000. The other two contenders were in a dead heat for second place with only one vote separating them.

Of those who revealed their opinions, a majority of patrons were partial to Under the Birches, described by several donors as being so vivid it looked like a photograph. “And the frame is so beautiful,” said Mary Wheeler, referring to the painting’s original 145-year-old frame with intricate carvings that rival the creamy swirls of a decorated cake.
ART HISTORY 101 During dinner of Black Angus filet and jumbo gulf shrimp, guests learned more about the works and artists in a crash course on art history. Katherine Pill, the museum’s curator of contemporary art, educated the crowd on Sargent and Zorach. Though Sargent was the cousin of famed artist John Singer Sargent, her family discouraged this woman born in 1892 in Wellesley, Mass., from pursuing her love of art.

Still, she managed to attend the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and found a mentor in artist George Luks. Sargent made a name for herself with her portraits and figurative works and is known for her use of cool, sketchy lines and cropping her figures. She stopped painting in 1936, struggled with mental illness and spent much of her life in a sanitarium. “You can see the impressionists’ influence on her,” Pill said. Marguerite Zorach, born in 1887 in Santa Rosa, Calif., was one of the first females admitted to Stanford in 1908 but left before finishing her degree to study art in Paris, where Gertrude Stein became a friend and mentor. The influence of Picasso is evident in her non naturalistic colors, cubism and Fauvism, Pill pointed out.
“Either of these works would grow the museum’s collection of women artists,” she said. Shepherd discussed Edward Gay and Under The Birches. At age 11, he immigrated with his family to Albany, N.Y., in the wake of the Irish potato famine in 1848. After showing talent for drawing, he studied with local artists and joined the ranks of the Hudson River School painters. Like others in his genre, he felt God’s presence in his work and his subject and painted with painstaking detail.
AND THE WINNER IS … The ballots came with dessert. Collectors Circle members George and Debbie Baxter never confer on their choices until they mark their ballots, but have voted for the same work the past three years.

“I wasn’t sure he would vote for the right one,” teased Debbie Baxter as she looked over her husband’s shoulder at his pick. She admitted she was torn between one painting that spoke to her intellectually and another that moved her emotionally. The couple has a pretty good track record. “The ones they have voted for were picked for the past three years,” George said. Diane Fair admitted she had seen photos of the paintings before the event and picked her favorite but then voted for a different work after seeing them all in person. About the time spoons were scraping the last of the coconut rice pudding with crushed pistachios, Shepherd came forward with the tabulation. The expected favorite, Under the Birches, earned the most votes and would be purchased for $55,000. The other two contenders were in a dead heat for second place with only one vote separating them, she said, a smile growing across her face. After the Birches purchase there was still $30,000 left in the fund, she explained, thanks to this year’s committee chairman Mary Shuh, who raised additional donations from sponsors beyond the initial amount in the purchase budget. “We have enough to purchase the Sargent work,” she said. (It carried a $30,000 price tag.) “The Marguerite Zorach is a really important piece,” Shepherd added, then told the crowd that if $55,000 more could be raised in the room that night the museum could purchase the Zorach.

IMPROMPTU FUNDRAISING Hands went up and guests started pledging $1,000. Shepherd circulated the room, thanking each donor, then, proving this really was an impromptu fund drive, asked: “Is anyone writing this down?” Within minutes, about $7,000 was on the books. Then Mark Mahaffey, outgoing chairman of the museum board stood up and spoke: “I voted for No. 1 (Under the Birches) because it has so much color and depth. But we need to make the museum the owner of all three of these. I don’t like to ask for money even though I’ve been doing it for the past 25 years,” he said. “This is an important piece of art that we don’t want to lose. Let’s go up from $1,000 to $5,000. Then we can all go home. I’m tired.” Several donors pledged $5,000 and some upped their $1,000 offer to $5,000. “Someone asked me which one of these is best for teaching kids about art,” Shepherd said, pulling at heartstrings. “With the Zorach we can talk about Fauvism and cubism. We can talk about early 20th century life in New York. There is an awful lot in this painting.” A few more donors raised their hand and the magic number was achieved. “I heard all night that it would be really hard to vote for just one work — the group really liked all three works, which is wonderful,” Shepherd said after the event. “The result at Collectors Choice this year demonstrated that this group of philanthropists is enthusiastic, generous, and shares my passion for the MFA.”

EMBRACING cultural vitality BY AMY SCHERZER
I
n her first 100 days on the job, Martine Meredith Collier chatted up 150 artists, community leaders and elected officials, all eager to bend the ear of the new executive director of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County. Collier swiftly crafted those conversations into a questionnaire to develop a values-and-mission statement and a three-year strategic plan. More than 1,000 people responded, she said, “almost 70 percent new voices, not already on our mailing list.” Then in June, a bombshell. Results of a national economic arts impact survey arrived: Hillsborough nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences generate $433 million annually. “Jaw-dropping,” Collier said. “Like having a Super Bowl in Tampa every year,” she added, borrowing a handy comparison. “Nearly double since the study done 10 years ago. That’s a huge, huge difference.” Add in the four contiguous counties and the economic ripple hits $1 billion. “We’re ahead of similar size markets in almost every category, including nearly 15,000 arts-related jobs,” she said, rattling off fresh statistics from the 2017 Americans for the Arts study. Data submitted from event attendees incorporated the cost of tickets, dinner, parking, even down to paying a babysitter. Loaded with new information and past experience, Collier aims for more inclusion, “a deeper reach to grass-roots and ethnic organizations,” and a dedicated philanthropic revenue source, “so the organizations are not living handto-mouth.” “There’s more energy, more diversity than in the last 10 years, but not as much connective tissue,” she said. “We’re in an upward spiral, but fractured.” Collier succeeded Art Keeble, who retired last year after 32 years as executive director. She spent the prior five years as CEO of Culture Works, a regional arts agency in the Dayton, Ohio, area.

She has previously worked for Grantmakers in the Arts in Seattle, and served as executive director of the Sarasota County Arts Council. During the three years Collier worked for the state of Georgia, from 2003-06, she was most gratified helping indigenous, self-taught artists make their remote, rural communities more art-centric. “Martine is a fantastic addition. The council is going to really take off under her guidance, engaging people at all levels,” said W. Campbell McLean, Arts Council of Hillsborough County board chairman. “My biggest regret is that my term is up after October.” Collier set out to be an actor, singing and dancing through her Nashville childhood and at the University of Memphis. “The Grand Ole Opry was my first paid dancing gig, for Minnie Pearl,” said Collier, 65. Later, the mother of three children swapped the stage for roles in arts administration. “I wasn’t cut out for the life of an artist,” she said. “It’s a really hard path, but I’m an excellent patron.” Her last performance in a community theater in 2002 was her biggest success. It’s the night she met her second husband, David Bentley. “It was a British farce, What the Butler Saw,” she recalled. “I played an alcoholic nymphomaniac in a Frederick’s of Hollywood slip. A board member got him a seat down front and invited him to the cast party.” Now residents of a downtown Tampa high rise overlooking the RiverWalk, the couple soak up the entertainment at the Straz Center, mimosas at the Tampa Museum of Art and movies at Tampa Theatre. When her three grandchildren visit, “arts junkies in training,” she said, they can walk to the Glazer Children’s Museum. Recently, an omen made her even more certain she belongs in this cultural gem. “It was at Sunday brunch. My husband and I were toasting our new life in Tampa with char-grilled oysters and Bloody Marys, when I heard a crunch,” Collier said. “I bit into a pearl.”

Dalí & Schiaparelli, an exhibit featuring haute couture gowns, accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings and the history of the two artists’ creative relationship, opens at the Dalí Museum Oct. 18, just after Bay’s entertainment issue comes out.
