TAKING IT ALL TO HEART
Editor Katherine Snow Smith at the Bern’s Steak House bar with Kevin Kiermaier during this month’s Bay fashion shoot.
Preparing for a Feb. 14 issue of Bay, “love seemed the inevitable theme. And when I thought of where we should shoot our fashion spread, the rich red and gold of Bern’s and decades of loved ones gathering there made it a wonderful location. We are so pleased to have Tampa Bay Rays centerfielder and Gold Glove winner Kevin Kiermaier join in the fashion shoot as well, because we love baseball and the Rays. The love between husbands and wives is highlighted in several vignettes on couples who work together. Charm bracelets symbolize a simpler kind of love. It’s a love of places and people who have a spot on the silver or gold scrapbooks of life. The vintage ones we feature reflect a love of fine craftsmanship that has become obsolete. Even though it’s February, there is a word ringing louder in my mind than love. Hope. As terrible things are happening around the
world, across the country and in our own cities, there is still much hope for making life better. I am reminded of what author E.B. White once said to a friend who was discouraged by an abounding bleak outlook. “As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the one thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness, he wrote in a letter. In my new role as Bay editor I have met far more than one upright man or one compassionate woman. Several come to mind. Melba Harris from Tampa raised more than $100,000 on her own for Best Buddies Tampa Bay, which pairs adults with intellectually disabled teens and young adults. “I walked into every store, car dealership, you

name it, and talked about how great this program is,” she said. “I grew up with a special needs brother. I’m 52, and when I was growing up my brother was stuck at home all the time.” At the 60th anniversary of the St. Petersburg chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha service sorority, hundreds honored the women who have provided scholarships, organized standardized test tutoring, after-school programs and much more for disadvantaged youth. “We need to help these young men and women travel down the right path,” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said as he praised the group. “We need to help them have hope.” For St. Petersburg native Allison Massari, hope is an important part of her art and the inspirational speeches she makes around the world. It was essential to surviving one car accident that left half of her body badly burned and another that caused brain injuries. It was hope that convinced Carolyn and Elihu Brayboy to invest close to $1 million in real estate
on 22nd Street S in St. Petersburg and open Chief’s Creole Cafe. But it’s not just hope for the success of their own venture that drives the Brayboys, whom we feature among couples who work together. They hope for a resurgence of the area that was once thriving with businesses and entertainers such as B.B. King and Louis Armstrong. In late January, I attended an event saluting Five Fabulous Females who have donated their time and talent to wonderful causes that support everything from education to health care. The impacts these five women have made are impressive. So at the risk of sounding like a bright-eyed Pollyanna (which I assure you I am not, just ask my kids), I am going into this new year knowing that there are plenty of upright men and compassionate women in Tampa Bay who will make a difference in 2016. I look forward to writing about them. — Katherine Snow Smith

ong before scrapbooking became a verb and photos were stored in phones, the charm bracelet was the way to make memories tangible and enduring. Girls grew into women and mothers became grandmothers while collecting miniature silver and gold symbols of important facets of their lives. A ballet shoe. The Eiffel Tower. A violin. Dogs. Gondolas. Many had moving parts. Pages turned in tiny books. Parisian can-can dancers kicked their legs. Buttons on cameras clicked and turned lenses. Craftsman used intricate molds to make charms three-dimensional with minute details. Those with moving parts required numerous molds. Queen Victoria wore her charm bracelet constantly and made them a must-have for European nobles in the second half of the 19th century. Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly did the same for American teenagers and co-eds in the 1950s. But the girlish bracelets passed down from mothers and grandmothers began to fall out of favor in the ’60s when young women rebelled against tradition and fashions changed. By the early 1980s, when the price of gold jumped way up, there was more profit in mass production and bigger pieces than time-consuming workmanship of a tiny charm, according to Bob Serata, owner of Bernie’s & Son Jewelers in St. Petersburg.
Thus, the charm bracelet became more rare. His 38-year-old store deals mostly in new, modern jewelry, but still carries some estate pieces, including charm bracelets. It currently has a gold bracelet with unusual charms that the owner collected from around the world. The wheels on a double-decker bus roll. A clown’s arms and legs move. The blades of a fan turn. A celebratory male patron swings around a lamp post outside a pub. It is priced at $8,000. Serata has a few clients who are diehard charm collectors. He helps them find the right pieces to mark moments, occasions or trips. He also customizes the charms. “I have a couple with a daughter who lives in Germany,” he said. “The mother has a charm of Germany and every time she goes there I put another diamond on her map. She’s up to about 15.”
Vintage charm bracelet ($8,000) from Bernie’s & Son Jewelers, 154 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg. (727) 823-2000. Below, the hourglass charm ($1,800) contains natural yellow diamonds.

SHE HAS HEARTS IN SPADES Kelly Kennedy’s two charm bracelets laden with hearts started with one single antique charm on one bracelet that her husband gave her shortly after they were married. “He knew when he gave it to me he wanted to keep adding to it,” she said. “He’s given heart charms to me for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas. When each of the girls was born. If we went on a trip or in an antique store we would pick one out.” Brett Kennedy, one of the brothers in Kennedy Brothers Auctions and Appraisals, knows his way around the antique world from growing up in his mother’s longtime business, Patty and Friends Antique Mall in St. Petersburg.

Several years into their 18-year marriage, the first bracelet got too heavy and crowded. “At that point we had two daughters and they both liked it so I decided I should get a second one so each girl can have one eventually,” recalled Kelly Kennedy, principal of Oakhurst Elementary in Largo. There won’t be any fighting over Mom’s jewelry box years from now, though. The daughters have decided that firstborn Kara, 17, gets the first heart bracelet and younger sister Krista, 14, gets the second. — Katherine Snow Smith

SCANDALOUS YET CHARMING Nancy Reiley’s parents gave her a charm bracelet when she was about 10 years old. It came in a signature royal blue leather box with gold trim from Peacock’s, a jeweler that’s been a mainstay in Chicago since 1837. Over the next few decades she collected 27 charms. There’s the Christmas stocking with a lid that opens to reveal Santa hiding inside. Peek through the peephole called a stanhope at the base of the little church and you can see the Lord’s Prayer inscribed inside. The ballerina’s legs bend at the knee and her arms at the elbow. Reiley, who lives in Tampa now, was wearing the bracelet when she ran into an old high school flame on a business trip several years ago. She was shocked that he remembered the bracelet and even started looking for certain charms. Before that, it caused quite a scene in the 1970s when Reiley was at a graduate school party at Stanford University in California. “People were exuberantly dancing, including myself. My dance partner of the moment was an eminent Stanford University professor who later became president of the university,” she recalled. “Somehow, flinging my arms around, one of the charms got hooked on the fly of his pants. He had to extricate it from his pants and no doubt, other dancers must have wondered what the heck was going on.” Reiley gave the scandalous charm bracelet to her granddaughter Sophie Rottenberg four years ago when she turned 16. Today, Sophie is a sophomore at Florida State University. No reports yet of charms getting stuck on the clothing of any FSU faculty. — Katherine Snow Smith

REMEMBERING SPECIAL FRIENDS The roof of the La Scala Opera House opens to reveal tiny inner workings of the famous Milan landmark. The carts on the Ferris wheel swing as the wheel turns. These are two of the favorite charms on the bracelet Mary Ann McArthur received from special family friends when she was 15 years old. “They were like second parents to me. They started it on a trip to Europe,” recalled McArthur, a real estate agent with Christie’s in Belleair. The monogrammed circle with gold rope trim was a gift from her best friend for her 30th birthday.
She gave the bracelet to her daughter, Elizabeth Whiteley of Tampa, when she turned 21. “She had always loved it as a little girl. The couple who gave it to me were like second grandparents to her and she was one of their favorite people,” McArthur explained. Whiteley has added several charms, including a locket from her grandfather and a charm of the lone cypress tree on Pebble Beach in California. “You don’t see bracelets like this anymore, but people often comment on it,” she said. One person who always comments is her 6-year-old daughter, Elsie, who will inherit it on her 21st birthday. — Katherine Snow Smith

FROM ADELBODEN TO ST. PETERSBURG The most meaningful charm on Vicky Steinwender’s sterling bracelet is the one representing the Girl Scout chalet in Adelboden, Switzerland. She got it several decades ago when she was a 17-year-old exchange student living in France. Her host family was driving through Europe on a camping expedition and she asked if they could take a side trip to Adelboden. “I’d been a Girl Scout and always wanted to go to Adelboden to see the Girl Scout chalet,” recalled Steinwender, who lives in St. Petersburg. The first international house to host Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, called Our Chalet, was built in 1932. Girls from around the world have visited or
dreamed of visiting this picturesque chalet nestled in a mountain village of 4,000 people an hour south of Bern. Today anyone can book a stay there. “We didn’t spend the night there but we all took the tour,” she recounted years later. “You can ask to have the tour led in different languages and we had ours in French.” She started her sterling bracelet when she was a 12-year-old growing up in Atlanta and added to it for years, usually with charms collected while traveling. Other favorites include a gondola from Venice and a horse and carriage with moving wheels. — Katherine Snow Smith

WHAT I’D GRAB FIRST IN A FIRE My parents started sterling charm bracelets for my sister and me when we were teenagers. They brought back a cable car from San Francisco and the Jefferson Memorial from Washington, D.C. But the best was the Statue of Liberty with the stanhope, or peephole, in the base. When you look through the minuscule round glass with one eye squinted you see the New York skyline. I set the bracelet aside during high school and college but started adding to it again in my 20s. It’s now a mobile scrapbook of my life. Don’t sit next to me at a dinner party unless you’re ready to hear the story behind each charm, push your eye against a tiny piece of glass and tell me you see the skyline of New York, even if you don’t.

My husband gave me a gold charm bracelet on my 30th birthday. It gradually accrued charms such as Mickey Mouse ears from Disney World, a windmill with turning arms from Nantucket, a “Happy Birthday” cake from my close friends for my 40th birthday. I even inherited a charm from my husband’s grandmother’s bracelet with his name and birthdate. The most unusual one by far was made from the fossil of a rattlesnake vertebra. We bought it from Gogo Jewelry, the only shop on remote Cumberland Island, Ga. Gogo Ferguson, a descendant of the Carnegie family that once owned the island, creates jewelry from things found in nature. Three years ago the bracelet went missing. I looked everywhere and finally decided it must have fallen off my wrist somewhere. Then my husband got a call from a detective with the Clearwater Police Department.
family
It had shown up in a pawn shop and they traced it to him because his name and birthdate were on the charm from his grandmother’s bracelet. He raced to the pawn shop the next morning only to learn the owner had melted it down and sold it as raw gold a few days earlier. Pawn shops must hold items for 30 days after they report them to the police but sometimes there is a backlog and detectives can’t determine the true owners of stolen jewelry within that time frame. We think a repairman in our home lifted the bracelet and pawned it. With the insurance payment I bought a new bracelet and several charms. When Gilbert Jewelers downtown went out of business I bought four vintage charms, all with moving parts.
One is a tiny reporter’s notebook with a pen and two pages that turn on a spiral at the top. I’m sure it was made decades ago to be a secretary’s dictation pad but I’ve liberated it. That’s the thing about vintage charms and bracelets. They come to you from grandmothers, mothers, aunts or estate sales with history and then you give the charms your own history. If only they could talk. — Katherine Snow Smith

history CHARMING TIMELINE Gail Whiting’s gold charm bracelet encapsulates the formative years of husband Paul’s career as a financial executive, the trajectory that ultimately brought them 30 years ago to Tampa, where he rose to chief executive officer at Spalding & Evenflo Companies. Their own partnership formed in Chicago, “where we were both born and raised,” she said, touching a tiny Marina Towers and Picasso’s Cubist horse sculpture in Daley Plaza, both in downtown Chicago. The EDAX International logo represents Paul’s time as vice president of finance; the Bahamian fish conjures up vacations at the president’s home in the Bahamas with their son, Paul Jr. Paul’s career move to vice president of finance at Questor Corp. took the family to San Francisco, recalled by an itty-bitty cable car. A sombrero signifies Questor’s operations in Mexico. In 1976, “Bicentennial year,” she recalled, the Whitings lived in Ohio. She authored a guidebook, Wholly Toledo, researched with 30 volunteers from the Junior League of Toledo. Then a butterfly alighted on the bracelet. “A graduation present from a friend when I earned a journalism degree at Bowling Green State,” she said, “my caterpillar-to-butterfly time.” — Amy Scherzer

‘I COULDN’T STOP CRYING’ Shortly after she was married, D’Arlene Llewellyn’s husband, Scoot, was called to serve in the Navy during the Korean War. Before he left for sea duty on the far side of the Pacific Ocean, the Michigan newlyweds spent their savings on a Fort Lauderdale vacation. “While we were there we found a delightful gift shop run by a couple from Maine and were impressed with their silver charms. They mostly related to New England and almost all had moving parts,” recalled Llewellyn, who now lives in Sarasota and is the mother of Todd Llewellyn, owner of Llewellyn Insurance Services Inc. in St. Petersburg. Her husband bought her a bracelet with one charm, a silver Navy hat. “The day he left to join his ship, the hospital ship Haven, he gave me a box and said to open it after he was gone,” she said. “In it were 24 charms, each in its own little box, and a note saying to open one a month while he was gone, not be sad, and remember that he loved me. I couldn’t stop crying.” Meanwhile, across the world, Scoot Llewellyn bought another charm bracelet while on R&R in Japan. It is filled with charms of trademarks of Japan at the time, such as flip-flops, chopsticks and an abacus. — Katherine Snow Smith

any resorts have luxury spas with private pools. But the serenity pool at the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain is different. Look up from your chaise or your cabana lounge and there, just past the pool’s privacy wall, is a mountaintop studded with saguaro cactus, with clouds sailing through the Arizona sky seemingly close enough to reach out and touch. The resort, one of Ritz-Carlton’s newer properties, boasts about 250 guest rooms and casitas tucked artfully among the peaks of the Tortolita Mountains, about a halfhour’s drive north of downtown Tucson. Along with five restaurants and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, Dove Mountain offers a 17,000-square-foot spa and fitness center that epitomizes the beautiful design and exquisite service for which the Ritz-Carlton chain is known. The spa’s exterior, faced with stacked boulders, opens to a serene, soothing environment with expansive spaces crafted out of stone and wood and finely tuned to provide comfort. The spa’s menu includes facials, salon services, massage therapy, body treatments, manicures and pedicures, and, of course, packages combining various services. Among the spa’s amenities are two treatment suites, suitable for couples or small groups, with fireplaces and private courtyards. There are indoor and outdoor treatment spaces, as well as a fully equipped mountain view fitness center. The spa’s employees stand ready to enhance your experience — after a 200-mile drive recently, all it took was about 45 minutes in the gentle hands of a manicurist there to infuse me with calm (and provide me with elegant shell-pink nails). Whether you’re a resort guest or not, scheduling any spa treatment gives you access for the rest of the day to spa facilities, including sauna, steam rooms, relaxation rooms and that serenity pool.
Besides stretching out in chaises or cabanas with lounges big enough for several people, or tanning or meditating on the lily-pad-shaped structure that seems to float in the water, you can also order lunch or drinks from the spa menu to enjoy poolside. Relax, but keep a sharp eye out — up on that mountaintop among the cactuses, you might also spot petroglyphs, rock art left by the Hohokam people 1,000 years ago. It’s just one more way to put things in perspective.

ince the days of Shakespeare, Valentine’s Day has been about high romance. But why not make Feb. 14 about high fashion, too? Your Valentine’s Day look doesn’t have to be frills and tired florals. For inspiration, look no further than the red carpet and runway. Tampa Bay Rays centerfielder and Gold Glove winner Kevin Kiermaier took a break from training to model men’s fashion on the red carpet at the storied Bern’s Steak House in Tampa. He joined model Kate Holliday to bring us some of spring’s top fashion trends.
POPPY Designers from Altuzarra to Vera Wang sent this orange-tinged red down the runway during New York Fashion Week. Wear it as a solid, or part of a bold floral print, as in this elegant dress. TASSEL Want to wear a statement necklace but without all the bling? Try a tassel. The enduring embellishment is back in a big way this spring. For maximum drama, pair a tassel necklace with a plunging neckline. Speaking of plunging, this Etro reversible silk dress can be worn with the deep V in front or turn it around and the back becomes a high — but equally sexy — neckline.
IN THE LOBBY Etro reversible silk dress ($1,050), from Saks Fifth Avenue. Shoes from personal collection. Dramatic leather tassel necklace with ebony and crystal beads ($69), from Canvas Fashion Gallery.
SPARKLE The holidays may be over, but metallics aren’t. Gold, silver, gunmetal. You can’t go wrong with a little sparkle. Wear head-to-toe gold (like the custom Calvin Klein cutout dress Brie Larson wore to the Golden Globes), or choose a blouse with some shine.
CAGED BOOTIES Is that a sandal? A boot? It’s both, actually. Caged booties offer something for everyone. They are delicate yet daring, familiar yet fashion-forward. Style-setters from Ellie Goulding to Rachel McAdams are already hooked.

A salute to couples who work together
BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH AND AMY SCHERZER
PHOTOGRAPHS BY SCOTT KEELER
Cooking and reviving CAROLYN AND ELIHU BRAYBOY
C
aroyln and Elihu Brayboy have raised three children together, leaned on each other during years at their respective corporate jobs and invested in real estate jointly. Dating since eighth grade and married for 35 years, they couldn’t leave well enough alone. A year ago they entered into one of the most physically, mentally and financially stressful ventures out there: They opened a restaurant together. Chief’s Creole Cafe at 901 22nd St. S in St. Petersburg has since received high marks from critics and customers. It wasn’t the couple’s initial plan, but after renovating a 70-year-old former corner store that had been abandoned for 35 years, they couldn’t find the right restaurateur to lease the space. Both remember when the street was a thriving business district for the African-American community. When they were in high school, lawyers, pharmacists, doctors and clothiers lined the street where B.B. King and Louis Armstrong occasionally played at nightclubs. They saw the potential of an elegant, locally owned restaurant, but operators and banks did not. One night they were lying in bed and she couldn’t sleep. She asked her husband, “What are we going to do with that empty restaurant?” He suggested they run it themselves. “I’m the dreamer and she’s the realist,” he said. “She’s not the dream killer but she does take the dream through a sifter to decide ‘Is it worth it?’ ”
As she sifted, the words of Isaiah 61 kept coming up. “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated.” The couple decided to create a limited menu from the recipes of Elihu Brayboy’s mother, a fabulous cook and New Orleans native who was called “Chief.” Chief’s Creole Cafe is more than a business venture, it’s an investment in the community. As the Brayboys sit in the French Quarter-style courtyard, passersby call out to them: “How you doing, Mrs. B., Mr. B.?” She handpicked each vintage chandelier, wrought-iron gate, marble table and crystal goblet. “Carolyn is a great DIY person. She gets it done,” her husband said. They’ve had to learn how their marriage translates into the restaurant business. “The biggest challenge in all this for me is him bringing me out to meet people. If left to myself, I probably would hold back a lot,” she said. He leads, but they both make diners feel like they are personal guests in a stately New Orleans home. Beyond that, she handles the finances and he does the shopping for fresh ingredients and late-night runs when they are low on shrimp. “We call it, ‘Stay in your lane,’ ” she said. “We collaborate on stuff but we focus on our own strengths.” — Katherine Snow Smith

Entertaining PAUL WILBORN AND EUGENIE BONDURANT
O
ne asset to being married to your work partner is you can multitask at home. “We can be making dinner and rehearsing at the same time,” said Eugenie Bondurant, who pairs up with husband Paul Wilborn for cabaret shows around Tampa Bay. An actor, model and acting coach, Bondurant started out with small parts in Wilborn’s “American Song Book” performances. During the Cole Porter classic Let’s Do It, she held up cue cards for the audience that read “birds do it” and “bees do it.” “She was in this long evening dress, like Miss Florida with long white gloves. She was trying to change the signs and the gloves wouldn’t let her,” recalled Wilborn, executive director of the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg. Bondurant hammed up the fumbling and the audience laughed. A lot. “It was like Lucy suddenly appeared on stage. A star was born,” he said. Bondurant, who teaches teenagers at the Patel Conservatory at the David A. Straz Jr. Center in Tampa, took voice lessons and became her husband’s regular sidekick. They’ve now been married and performing together for 11 years. There was a learning curve at first as Bondurant built up her confidence. She worried too much, Wilborn said, and was the duo’s worst critic.

“He’s taught me how to layer things on a more positive slant,” she laughed. “Instead of ‘No, that’s horrible,’ it’s more, ‘Why don’t we try this instead.’ ” Bondurant recently appeared in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 as Tigris, the feline-esque ally of Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth and the gang. She was in her element acting, but the premiere and celebrity-packed red carpet presented new roles for both Bondurant and Wilborn. “It was incredibly helpful to have him there,” she said. Along with preparing remarks for the throng of media interviews, Wilborn helped his wife find the perfect shoes to go with her Christian Siriano gown. Her stylist insisted on Barneys, but instead they went to Santee Alley for store after store of knockoffs. “We were taking pictures of shoes and Paul was sending them to her,” Bondurant said. The stylist finally approved of a black, T-strap spike heel. “She said, ‘I can tell by the carpet in the picture you are not at Barneys,’ ” Bondurant recounted. “She was right. We were at Payless.” Wilborn stayed within a few feet of his wife on the red carpet, but didn’t share her limelight. “If I was Brad Pitt I would have walked with her,” he said, adding proudly, “but being Paul Wilborn, it was her moment alone.” — Katherine Snow Smith

Making music ANNA KATE MACKLE AND JOHN SHAW
W
hen John Shaw moves his wife’s harp in and out of the family minivan, he could wonder why he had to fall in love with the Florida Orchestra’s principal harpist. But then, “when I’ve got tons of big instruments in the house, she could be thinking, ‘Why did I marry a percussionist?’ ” said Shaw, the orchestra’s principal percussionist. Anna Kate Mackle met Shaw when she joined the orchestra in 1999 and was seated right in front of him. “I couldn’t help but see her. We would talk at rehearsals and performances,” he recalled. They’ve been married since 2003. Working with your spouse isn’t that hard when you love what you do, both agreed. And now that the orchestra has a second harp that stays in place at the Mahaffey Theater, they don’t have to transport hers around as much. (But they still will always need a minivan for their oversized musical instruments.) “It’s good to be married to someone who really understands what you do,” she said. “And it’s nice to be able to bounce ideas off each other,” he said.

Their 9-year-old daughter, Madeline, also has a strong understanding of and appreciation for the orchestra. She often goes to rehearsals and performances because both parents are always working at the same time. “Sometimes she sits in the audience or she sits backstage with her iPad or book. She’s like the mascot, everybody knows her,” Mackle said. “She was sleeping in a bean bag chair backstage while Yo-Yo Ma was playing with us.” “We only have the best lullabies for her,” Shaw added with a laugh. — Katherine Snow Smith

Publishing in Ybor ANGIE AND PATRICK MANTEIGA
A
ngie Manteiga started working for his father’s newspaper before he did, recalled La Gaceta editor and publisher Patrick Manteiga, her Plant City High School sweetheart and husband since they were 19 years old. She learned advertising design and layout production in 12th grade; he rose through the ranks, handling sales and circulation, eventually taking over the trilingual weekly from his late father, Roland Manteiga, in 1998. The couple work in tandem but independently in the small Ybor City news bureau. “I get up every hour or so to harass her and kiss the top of her head,” he said. Disagreements are rare, but stuff happens. When it does, she likes a quick fix while he feels the need to dig deeper. “I like to resolve how it happened,” he said. She said, “He likes to pontificate. I don’t like to be pontificated.” Patrick will ask her to read his editorials occasionally. Was he too sharp? Or too easy? Her opinion matters. “Sometimes,” he said, “she’ll tell me to tone it down a bit.” He typically complies. Daughter Erin was born in 1985, Emily arrived in 1990 and son Joey in 1991. As infants and toddlers, all three came to work with their parents. More recently, granddaughter Lola Grace, now 3, accompanied Erin when she joined the advertising staff.

The Manteigas drive together every morning from their Temple Terrace home, stopping en route for eggs and café con leche at a Cuban sandwich shop. Now that they are empty-nesters, the couple, both 51, often stick around for dinner and drinks to indulge their love of Ybor. They’re greeted everywhere they go. “Ybor’s like a big Cheers, only it’s outdoors,” he said. “We started our family young,” she added. “This is like having our college years now, going out and having fun.” At home, the publisher might get notice of other deadlines from his loving co-worker. “He thinks he’s the boss all the time,” she said. “Accolades are nice, but you still have to take out the trash.” “She gets in the way of my grandeur sometimes,” he teases. “I’ve tried to supervise her all my life. It just doesn’t work.” — Amy Scherzer

Building and developing HEIDI AND SCOTT SHIMBERG
S
he wanted a solid door, he preferred a French door. The debate ended with a smart compromise: a solid door with glass surrounding it. “Our first design decision was our own front door,” Heidi Shimberg said, recalling a chaotic beginning in 1997 when she and Scott Shimberg simultaneously planned a wedding and built their South Tampa dream home. Last year, the real estate developers wrote CoupleCEO: From the Bedroom to the Boardroom and Back, sharing their blueprint for time management, technology, health and intimacy strategies, insights gained during nearly 20 years operating Hyde Park Builders. The entrepreneurial couple have built, developed and sold more than a quarter-billion dollars of real estate throughout the Tampa Bay area. Respect for your spouse’s time and opinions, “wherever, home or workplace,” she says, is the foundation. Build on individual strengths and weaknesses, and hire others to fill the gaps, advises Scott, the son of Tampa pioneer developer Hinks Shimberg. Twice Heidi left the family business, first to help open the Glazer Children’s Museum in downtown Tampa, serving as vice president of marketing and development from 20082011. Recently, she was recruited to help launch the Bryan Glazer Family Jewish Community Center, where Scott is an integral member of the building committee. The couple

rely on an array of apps to sync their schedules with sons Seth, 17, and Adam, 15, and Heidi’s oldest, Josh, 23. Making time for sailing, their chief pastime, is a priority. Sympatico as they are, her “git-er-done” style often outpaces his “idea man” personality. “Scott will be visioning and I’ll be drilling down details before he finishes,” she said, characteristically dwelling on balance rather than frustration. “It’s a process,” he said. “It’s okay to brake a bit so you don’t go too fast.” She agreed: “If you’re both visionaries, you never get anything done. And if you never have new ideas, you never move on.” — Amy Scherzer

FOR SOME, THE ULTIMATE
in automotive beauty is a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Or a Bentley Mulsanne. Or a Mercedes Maybach S600. Fine rides, certainly, but can anything turn heads quite like a 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria, big as a boat, all ivory and peacock blue, chrome bumpers and trim polished to a laser-light brilliance?
This is the kind of car that evokes the days when Detroit was king, when gas was cheap, when America’s potential seemed unlimited. The kind that makes you want to head for Route 66, a road that should be traveled in one direction only — westward, always following the sun. If that’s not possible, fantasize closer to home. Every Thursday evening, in cool winter or on steamy summer nights, dozens of classic car owners and aficionados gather outside a Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in mid Pinellas County. They come to show off or admire Mustangs and Corvettes and Bel Airs, hoods wide open to display engines as spotless as sterile rooms. BILL ZACK is here with his 1956 Dodge Royal Lancer, black with push-button transmission. Of course, there is a story behind it. When Zack was a young teenager in Buffalo, N.Y., his father got a Ford Galaxy and relegated the Dodge to the garage. Nobody ever went in there, so Zack took it on himself to snazz up the drab green body with a black paint job and maple-colored trim. One day, when the Ford was out of commission, his father went to the garage to fetch the Dodge. “What the hell did you do to it?” he bellowed at his son. Nonetheless, he drove it off, only to return with a grudging admission. “Everywhere I went, people just loved it.” Zack passed his driver’s test in that car, and when he turned 16, he asked if he could take it to the beach. “Happy birthday,” his parents said, and handed him the keys. “And that’s how I got the Dodge.”
I feel like I am back in the ’60s. It makes me think of going to McDonald’s, crusing, going to drive-in movies, drag racing.” JIM FILCHECK, who takes his 1969 Cadillac Seville to Quaker Steak & Lube

It’s a fun hobby. It can be very expensive, but the best part is that it’s a place to gather with friends. It’s a big family.” Clem — everybody knows him as “Car Show Larry” — is property manager of Clearwater’s Episcopal Church of the Ascension. The car owners pay what he calls a $5 “donation” to enter the show, part of which goes for youth ministries and other good causes. But it doesn’t cost anything to walk around and look at the Q-ball shifters, the padded dashes, the bench seats wide enough for the kind of fun you never told your parents about. To help set the mood, songs from the ’50s play over the loudspeakers. Since my love has left me I’m so all alone I would bring her back to me But I don’t know where she’s gone I don’t know where she’s gone The interior of Rick Belicka’s 1937 Chevy Coupe.

Many decades ago, DAN CLARK parted ways with the automotive love of his life. Then a year ago, he found it again: a 1968 Camaro 396 Super Sport, royal blue with white stripes down the sides. “My first brand-new car was just like this. Then I went into that institutional thing — marriage — and when I got out, I said, ‘I’m gonna buy that car.’ Only it was 10 times more than what it cost then, which was about $3,200.” Come, come, come, come, come into my heart. Tell me, darlin’, we will never part. I need you, darlin’, so come go with me. (Wah, wah, wah, wah ah.) DICK NOVAK bought his 1952 Cadillac convertible 25 years ago, when he was still a firefighter back in Minnesota. It needed work, but between runs he had time to pull it apart and make it like new again. Today it is a gleaming, voluptuous beauty, Highland green with a seafoam interior. There are power windows and power seats and chrome hubcaps with the gold and red Cadillac crest. Even among the millions of dollars worth of vintage vehicles here, it is a showstopper of the first order. “In ’52, Cadillac was top of the hill, better than any car in the world,” Novak says. “It set the standard.” 1953 Cadillac Photograph by Susan Taylor Martin

Before everyone heads home, gift certificates and trophies are handed out. But for those like Jim Filcheck, here in his ’69 Cadillac Seville, the real reward is the chance to relive a time, if only briefly, when life didn’t seem quite so complicated. “I feel like I’m back in the ’60s. It makes me think of going to McDonald’s, cruising, going to drive-in movies, drag racing.” So if you, too, yearn for a bit of nostalgia, come on out. And maybe get a burger, fries and a shake along the way. With a cherry on top.

THE COMEBACK ARTIST BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH
A
rtist and professional speaker Allison Massari has a survival guide that she’s sharing with audiences around the world. Though 50 percent of her body was burned in a fiery car crash, it’s not about how to survive a burning vehicle. A subsequent car accident caused multiple sheers all over her brain and she lost the ability to read, drive, create and run her business for more than a year. But her well-received talk also isn’t about the long, hard-fought battle to survive the brain injuries. She calls it a survival guide to “being human.” Her speeches are about finding the mechanisms within ourselves that we need to overcome adversity. Any adversity. Medical, emotional, familial and beyond. Massari gives her one-hour talk about 60 times a year to audiences as big as 8,000 for organizations and corporations such as Eli Lilly, Kaiser Permanente, LPL Financial and GE Healthcare IT. Her longest-standing ovation to date is three minutes. Since hitting the circuit as a professional speaker in 2011, the St. Petersburg native has been named one of the top 10 motivational speakers in North America by Meetings & Conventions magazine and named the “No. 1 rising star” by the National Speakers Association.

The 50-year-old artist, who graduated from St. Petersburg Catholic High School and studied at Rhode Island School of Design, and Parsons in New York, was first known for her imaginative and vulnerable paintings and self-portraits. She has a collage, or “paper painting”, titled The Healer in the Museum of Fine Arts’ permanent collection. Corporations such as Lockheed Martin, US Airways, AAA Motor Club and General Mills have commissioned paintings by her. Massari also has a successful line of jewelry featuring pendants with small, interchangeable paintings. While she always will be an artist, of course, these days she is more focused on speaking. Her themes are personal development, adversity, change, success and well-being. “I talk about how to forgive, how to deal with difficult people, how to walk in the world and feel peaceful,” she said recently in a phone interview from her home in Marin County, Calif. “One of the most important things I say is pain and joy exist side by side. Very often in life when bad things happen to us we are conditioned to go into that pain. That’s what you are supposed to do, to have a time of grief and perhaps also anger,” she said. “But at the same time alongside that pain there are good things happening in our lives. That doesn’t mean the pain is going to go away. But we have to make a choice at some point to focus on the good, to nourish and build the good things so much that they can eventually tower over our pain.” Next to the pain of the 1998 car crash on Belcher Road she sees the joy of Roger Pepper, the stranger passing by who pulled her from the burning car. “There’s nothing good about burning alive. What I choose to remember is the heart-lifting moment when I locked eyes with this man just before he kicked in the glass window when I thought I was going to die alone,” Massari said. They became friends and stayed in touch until he died in 2006. The year after the accident she started Roger Pepper Adventure Camps. Small groups of teen burn survivors, some with multiple disabilities, convene twice a year in Crested Butte, Colo. They are able to move and triumph in ways they never have before. “They can take people who are quadriplegic rafting. They can take someone with no fingers rock-climbing,” Massari said excitedly. “We get the kids out there doing everything from snowboarding to camping and whitewater rafting. It really shifts the paradigms for them.” There is a vetting process for applicants, but it’s completely free.
Massari created The Healer in 2008. The peaceful, yet illuminating, nude consisting of thousands of pieces of colored paper seems to represent that joy and pain she discusses. “It’s an image to me that embodies feeling that someone has shown up there for you to bring you healing,” she said. “It’s a hint to what is present for us in the divine. … But everyone on this planet could be a healer. When we look someone in the eye with our kindness, when we put a supportive hand on someone’s back.” Kent Lydecker, director of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, calls The Healer powerful. “It conveys a sense of deep humanity and spirituality. It is very much loved by our public and it speaks deeply,” he said. “Allison’s skills and quality as an artist are exceptional and her story is amazing.” Her jewelry is a top seller at the museum, he added. It’s also available at Marion’s at 1301 Fourth St. N in St. Petersburg and Allisonmassari.com. Massari still comes to Tampa Bay often to visit her parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. As with her art and her recoveries, public speaking success didn’t come easily or right away. “I was terrified of public speaking. It wasn’t something I would have ever chosen to do but I knew it was the best way to reach as many people as possible,” Massari said. “I joined Toastmasters and I worked on my craft. My theory was you immerse yourself in what you’re doing so deeply that you become something to draw people to you rather than going out and selling yourself.”
The artist found a way to be comfortable on the stage.
Tampa Bay Times researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report.

PUBLIC SCULPTURES IN CLEAR VIEW Catherine Woods works in her St. Petersburg studio creating and completing major public artworks across the country. Her work is featured in several places in the Tampa Bay area. Here are excerpts from her answers to questions about her life and her work. — Pegie Stark

Catherine, what is your definition of ‘public art’? When people are moved by the 911 memorial, awed by Mount Rushmore, photographing themselves on front of the Big Bean in Chicago, or delighted by hundreds of colorful umbrellas suspended in a marketplace in Portugal, they are experiencing public art . Public art isn’t just bronze statues of a guy on horseback anymore; now it’s everything from sculpture to digital new media and performance. For a more exact definition, I’m going to borrow a quote from the Americans for the Arts website that says exactly what I would have said, only better.
“Public art is often site-specific, meaning it is created in response to the place and community in which it resides. It often interprets the history of the place, its people, and perhaps addresses a social or environmental issue. The work may be created in collaboration with the community, reflecting the ideas and values of those for whom it’s created.” What response do you get from people who view your art in the environment? Are people amazed, stunned? Perplexed? Personally, I’m happy to say, I’ve gotten mostly positive responses! People are sometimes surprised to see glass utilized in sculpture. They think of it as a delicate medium, but once I explain the technical process, about how the glass is tempered and laminated, which makes it durable like windshields in cars and skyscraper windows, they get it. I’ve stood on a 10-foot piece of tempered glass, not even an inch thick, with a factory worker in Austria, and all it did was bend. People are also surprised that I work in mediums other than glass. For example, Chrysalis Launcher is polychromed aluminum, as is Timeline Tower. Tired Hydrant is carved urethane. And my private work incorporates mixed-media, painting and ceramics, in addition to glass. Tired Hydrant is a good example of collaboration in art-making. I came up with the concept and design, and Mark Aeling sculpted the piece for me.
Chrysalis Launcher 22’ H x 7’ W x 7’ D Media: Polychromed aluminum, stainless steel, concrete, coated steel. In Bradenton. Chrysalis Launcher symbolizes transformation, a metamorphosis like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis with its wings fluttering.
What kinds of questions do people ask you? “How much did that cost?” I get that all the time. When Kinetic Ring got trucked to Tampa on a flatbed truck and set up at the corner of West Shore Boulevard and Kennedy, the truck driver asked how much the sculpture cost. I asked him if he wanted to guess and he said, “$10,000?” I told him that $10,000 pretty much gets you a hole in the ground with rebar and 10 feet of reinforced concrete. But also you have to hire an engineer to do wind-loading studies, buy the metal, hire a company who can bend the metal, get the glass manufactured in Germany — because they’re some of the best glass painters in the world — hire a fabricator to put it all together, an electrician to run the wires to light it up at night, hire you to truck it here, and get a crane to take it off your truck and an installer to set it up. By the time I finished telling him the process, his next guess was much closer to the actual cost involved! They also ask, “Where do you get your ideas ?” I still don’t know how to answer that one. You just keep working and the ideas will come.

How do you pull this off? These are often massive pieces that require a lot of technical skill and muscles. How big is your team? And who does what? Large-scale public art definitely takes a village! It is a very collaborative process, involving artists, engineers, arts administrators, patrons, fabricators, concrete, metal and glass vendors, trucking companies, crane operators, electricians, lighting designers and more. Luckily, my former ad career taught me the importance of concept first, and finding talented collaborators to help realize that vision. Consequently, I have good relationships with vendors all over the county and the world. And I cherish them. What are the steps in your process? Visits to the location? Then drawings? In general, my creative process goes like this once I’m a finalist or have been chosen for a project: • Visit the site. • Whenever I can, I like to talk with the community who will ultimately live with the artwork. • Take photos of the site or get architect’s drawings, if the site is still under construction or in the planning stages. • Generate lots of concept sketches. • Pare down to the top ideas and fine-tune them in Photoshop. • Build a model, if it’s in the budget, and present it to the client. With models, generally 1 inch on the model equals 1 foot on the sculpture. • Sell it and build it.

Earth, air, fire and water are represented in this sculpture inspired by the island shape of the bus platform.
When you are on location where a piece of yours will be landing when it is done, what is the thought process you go through? Or what do you ask yourself while you are contemplating this work that will be shown in the location? Every piece and situation is unique. First, I work closely with the client to make sure that we’re on the same page. Generally, I ask: Who is the audience? Will the audience be driving by the work, so that it needs to be read quickly at high speeds? Or will they be walking up to it, so more intimate details can be incorporated? What makes this piece appropriate for this location and community? How is this piece unique? I also like to consider how the artwork will enrich the life of the viewer. As an example, I’m working on a piece for an elementary school in Vancouver, Wash. I want it to be inspirational. The best site was a large wall across from a double staircase. I took a three-dimensional landscape and tilted the piece vertically on the wall, so that when it’s viewed from that angle, the kids feel like they’re flying over a magical landscape as they go down the stairs. How long do the projects take? It depends. The two projects I’m currently working on will be about a year-and-a-half from the first conversation with the client to installed artwork. That is pretty standard for my projects.
How did you get involved in creating artwork for public places? I remember in college seeing a sculpture that looked like a giant was waking up and coming out of the earth. I found that intriguing and made a special trip to Hains Point in D.C. to see it. That’s probably when the seed was planted. Later, when contemplating a career change from advertising, I remember being in a mall and seeing oversized pieces of sculptural fruit hanging from the ceiling and thinking, “That makes this place better. I want to do that.” Where did you get your training? I’ve moved around a bit. I knew in college I wanted to make art, but also knew that there wasn’t anything that I needed to express badly enough that I wanted to live in the proverbial garret, a la La Boheme — that was the image presented to me by those concerned about my financial future. I took a practical approach and got a degree in graphic design, a creative field which utilized my art skills. Studying graphic design helped me discover and galvanize my love of problem-solving. How to express an idea visually, in a way that people can understand and relate to, is an exciting process and I think it ties into creating artwork for the public realm. My design degree landed me at UPI (United Press International) in Washington, D.C., creating informational graphics to illustrate current events. After a few more graphic designs jobs, I returned to school, attending Portfolio Center in Atlanta, which led to a 12-year stint in the field of advertising.

How long have you lived in St. Petersburg, and why is the Tampa Bay area so perfect for you and your work? About 10 or 11 years now. I love it here. It’s a beautiful location. I’ve made great friends and live in a wonderful neighborhood with fabulous neighbors. The tropical environment is an inspiration for my artwork and feeds my love of color.

HOLIDAY FASHION SHOW Holiday glitz and Georgette’s Boutique go toe-to-toe every December when the South Tampa shop sponsors its glam-wrapped fashion show for St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, now 27 years running. Red ruled the runway on cocktail and evening dresses modeled by 20 sparkled and Spanxed media and sports celebrities. The sellout luncheon of 750 women at the Hilton Tampa Downtown on Dec. 4 raised $120,000 for women’s urgent care. 1.
