Whether you have a day, a weekend or a month to spare, this Travel issue of Bay will encourage you to hit the road. AfterpagingthroughthephotoessayofFlorida SouthernCollege, you’llprobablywanttovisit inpersontoseetheworld’slargestsingle-site collectionofFrankLloydWrightarchitecture. Theschool,whichisabout40milesawayin Lakeland, wasoncevotedthe“mostbeautiful campusinthenation”bythePrincetonReview. Upon your return, read Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. Spoiler alert: this story of the women in the architect’s tumultuous life may not inspire affection for him. But you will gain a vast knowledge of his architecture and the era he defined, and perhaps be inspired to travel to Chicago, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and several other cities to see signature works. Drive just over the Florida state line and take
a short boat ride to reach Cumberland Island, which features 17 miles of untouched coastline as well as one of the most elegant inns on the Eastern Seaboard. Switchgearsfromagetawayinthecartoone onaplaneandconsiderTelluride,Colo.Evenif you’renotaskier, visitingthisformerminingtown duringtheTellurideFilmFestivalisanexperience thatcouldhookyouforlife. Add a little more flight time to your itinerary and try a group culinary trip to Sabina, Italy, near Rome. In this issue, residents of Tampa and St. Petersburg share their stories of the villa, cuisine and off-the-beaten-path tours that make for a marvelous trip. In last year’s travel issue, I wrote about the benefits of going on trips that take you out of your comfort zone and push you to try something you’d never otherwise encounter. Well, it seems
both my daughters chose to heed this bit of my wisdom over everything else I spout. My oldest, Olivia, is spending this spring semester at the American University in Cairo, where she has ridden a camel among the Giza Pyramids, walked the ancient Al-Muizz Street and tried Hummus Sham, a spicy chick pea soup-like drink. She’s also taking five classes on Arabic culture and history. My middle child, Charlotte, is taking a gap year between graduating high school and starting college to travel and work abroad. She used a website called workaway.info to find places where she and a friend could stay for free in exchange for working. So far she’s been a housekeeper at a bed and breakfast in Riomaggiore, Italy; a laundress for a hostel in the Hague, Netherlands; and worked the front desk at a hostel in Birmingham, England. As I write this, she’s on a bus called the Kiwi Experience, backpacking throughout New Zealand. Charlotte has explored the Great Barrier Reef, slept in hammocks on the beach, crossed
the North Sea by herself on a 12-hour ferry and hiked everything from the Alps in Switzerland to the Red Crater volcanic terrain in New Zealand. But what my daughters talk about most during calls home are not what they see and do, but the people they meet: There’s Maria from Portugal, Annika from Germany, Frances from England, David from Australia and Bonnie from France. Travel brings strangers together. Whether it’s someone you share roasted oysters with on Cumberland Island, the person behind you in line at the Telluride Film Festival or someone across the table from you in Sabina, travel offers conversations with people from other places that help us know more about the world — as well as where we want to go next. Thank you for reading, — Katherine Snow Smith

CUMBERLAND ISLAND
Rustic & refined BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH
Just north of the Florida state line, the Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island, Ga., gives visitors one of the most serene and natural escapes on the East Coast, yet it also offers a taste of a lavish lifestyle that once belonged only to the Carnegies and their cohorts. Though there has been talk of a bridge over the years, the island can only be reached by boat. Ferries leave from St. Mary’s, Ga., and Fernandina Beach.
Above, flowers freshen up one of the antique pieces. At left, bicycles are the best way for Greyfield Inn guests to get around the island and its stately, moss-draped live oaks. Photographs by Peter Frank Edwards, courtesy of Greyfield Inn
MARCH 2018
bay 31
By day, the mood around the Greyfield is casual and adventurous, but in the evenings guests gather in the living room to enjoy cocktails among the family portraits, Tiffany lamps and Victorian antiques.
Thomas Carnegie, brother of Andrew and a partner in the steel dynasty, bought most of the slip of land in the 1880s for a winter playground. More than 100 years later, his descendants sold and donated the majority of the barrier island to the National Park Service and it was declared a National Seashore in 1972. While the 17 miles of undisturbed, pristine coastline has the feeling of a wild, deserted land, the Greyfield, a former Carnegie mansion, is the epitome of refinement. The home was built for Margaret Ricketson, daughter of Thomas and Lucy Carnegie, in 1900 and converted to a 10-room inn in 1962. The family still stays there on occasion — and it also was where the Kennedy family secretly gathered in 1996 when John Kennedy Jr. wed Carolyn Bessette. By day, the mood around the Greyfield is casual and

adventurous, but in the evenings guests gather in the living room to enjoy cocktails among the family portraits, Tiffany lamps and Victorian antiques. The library is filled with first editions and classics collected by the Carnegies. Guests are asked to abide by the honor system and keep tabs in a notebook of what the bartender serves them. While all meals are included in the night’s stay, which averages $600 for double occupancy, alcohol is not. The inn requires a two-night minimum. Dinner is formal, with men required to wear jackets, for a gourmet experience created by Whitney Otawka. The rising-star chef has worked in fine restaurants from San Francisco to Atlanta to New York, including, Le Bernardin and Blue Hill at Stone Barns. She also recently competed on Bravo’s Top Chef.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room with a blazing fireplace in winter and fall. For lunch, guests make their way to the kitchen to pick up a boxed picnic. The gourmet-to-go meal can be consumed on the Greyfield’s grassy lawn or put in a the basket of complimentary bikes and taken to the beach for a waterfront meal. The inn also offers fishing gear and kayaks for paddling in tidal creeks. There are hardly any vehicles on the island, but the inn does lead tours in pickup trucks with padded benches in the back. Drivers tell stories of the Carnegies and the island’s life before them. Its first inhabitants were American Indians. Spaniards came in the 1500s and brought the horses — more than 100 of their equine descendants still roam the beach wild and regularly amble up the path to the inn. The French and British had their time on Cumberland Island as well, but they didn’t stay. In 1785, Revolutionary War hero Gen. Nathanael Greene and his wife, Catherine, started building a four-story home there. Greene died, but his widow finished the home and spent the rest of her life there, according to the National Park Service. In the 1880s, the Carnegies discovered Cumberland. Thomas and Lucy built a 59-room Scottish-style castle, complete with turrets and an imposing name: Dungeness. When he died in 1886, Lucy made it a permanent home for herself and their nine children. Three more mansions were built on the island for their children. Arsonists set fire to Dungeness in 1959 and it burned for three days. Visitors to the island can walk the ruins of Dungeness, where horses bask in the sun. They can also go through the little wooden church built by freed slaves after the Civil War, where the Kennedys were married. Beyond the family history, the island is a natural habitat for wildlife including feral pigs, deer, alligators, rattlesnakes and more than 100 species of birds.

She makes jewelry cast in gold and silver from the found objects that pay tribute to the wild island. Devotees of her pieces include Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Jenna Bush Hager, Carly Simon, Isabella Rossellini and Maria Sharapova. Her collection is sold online as well as in a studio on Cumberland Island. That’s the only place to shop, though the inn sells a limited selection of clothing and sundries. This is a grand place to escape the trappings of the real world, so don’t expect the amenities of a modern resort. Cell service is spotty and there’s no Wi-Fi at the Greyfield. But once you are there, you won’t feel the need to connect with anywhere else.

DOWN THE ROAD PHOTOGRAPHS AND WORDS BY SCOTT KEELER
Florida Southern College is a living exhibit of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Located in Lakeland, near Lake Hollingsworth, the campus features the largest single-site collection of Wright buildings in the world. Wright collaborated with then-campus president Ludd M. Spivey from 1938 until the 1950s to create what they called the “college of tomorrow,” and referred to the buildings as “organic architecture” that blended in with the environment. He felt that the architecture of the buildings would unify the students so they could work together in harmony.
WILLIAM DANFORTH CHAPEL The main front stained glass window allows streams of natural light into the William Danforth Chapel. The chapel was completed in 1955 and the window was Frank Lloyd Wright’s last stained glass design. The chapel is used for prayer, weddings and religion classes.
THE ANNIE PFEIFFER CHAPEL The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel opened in 1941, and was built largely with student labor. The late Florida Southern College president, Ludd Spivey, who convinced Wright to design campus buildings, arranged with the students that their tuition could be paid through labor efforts.
THE USONIAN FACULTY HOUSE The Usonian Faculty House on the campus was designed by Wright in 1939 and built in 2013 by the college. Twenty of the homes were originally planned for faculty housing, but they were never built. The faculty home is now part of the Visitor Center at the college. The home combines Wright’s design preference for one main open space with his love of natural lighting.
WATER DOME Wright’s Water Dome was built in 1948, even though the fountain did not work as intended because of insufficient pump technology. The pool was left open and eventually paved over. The fountain was restored and reconstructed in 2008 and now operates as intended. The dome is 160 feet in diameter and the jets can spew water to 30 feet.
POLK COUNTY SCIENCE BUILDING The west end of the Polk County Science Building features the only Wright planetarium ever built. The planetarium is currently closed for repairs.

But after spending four days at the 2017 Telluride Film Festival in the former Colorado mining town turned low-key ski mecca, I never want to miss another one. The combination of standout movies (Oscar favorites Lady Bird and The Shape of Water premiered there), a great little downtown and the great big outdoors madefortheperfectwaytospendLaborDayweekend. I went with a group of friends who had never been before. We rented a house where elk wandered through the back yard, with 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains. The neighborhood, Mountain Village, offers a free shuttle to the public gondola, which transports people to Telluride from 7 a.m. until midnight. The 13-minute ride begins among the towering Aspen trees and ends abovethem. Members of our group hiked, golfed and went fly fishing with the same guide who’s taken out former presidents George H.W. BushandBarackObama.

The food in Telluride was fabulous, from avocado and chili-oiltoastattheno-frillsGhostTowncoffeeshoptocontemporary American cuisine 10,551 feet above sea level at Allred’s rustic restaurant. Our group enjoyed dinner at the cozy 221 South Oak restaurant, where all sausage, bread, pasta and dessert are made in-house. Chef Eliza Gavin is a former Top Chef contestant who creates entrees such as blueberry-and-coffee-dusted elk T-bone. My favorite meal, however, was prepared at our house by Will Nolan, a chef at Telluride’s Madeline Hotel who makes house calls. He offered grilled elk and roasted whole chickens with summer squash and root vegetables. Wealsoenjoyedayogaclasstaughtatourhouseandwere picked up at the front door for a personalized jeep tour. We rode, with tops down and stomachs lurching, into the peaks of the mountains to explore the deserted mining camp that lured hundreds of hopefuls to Telluride in the 1870s. I went on a couple short hikes, but mostly focused on the tattered schedule of films I carried in my back pocket. I planned my days around the ones that already had Oscar buzz because Telluride has a knack for introducing great films. Eight Best Picture winners in the past decade made their North American debuts there. But I also enjoyed lesser-known pictures with no recognizable names. Since I didn’t buy a pass, which range from $390 to $5,000, I waited in the standby lines that allow folks to pay $40 to see the movie if there are leftover seats. BeforeI got the scheduleof40moviesshownthroughout the weekend, which isn’t released until the night before the festival, I felt a little anti-social and anti-nature, thinking about being holed up in dark theaters. But the movie-going experience is the exact opposite. Friends in our group took in a show or two with me, and when I was solo, I got to know people in line or seated next to me. The venues themselves weren’t like seeing movies at home. I saw films in high school gyms and auditoriums as well as at the Chuck Jones Cinema. The facility dedicated to the animator, writer and director of Looney Tunes features clever signs with Bugs Bunny and many of his cohorts.

Though I didn’t go to any first showings where the directors and actors traditionally appear, they still came out for several subsequent ones. Angelina Jolie introduced her film, First They Killed My Father, with Loung Ung, the author of the book by the same name. Natalie Portman, narrator and producer of Eating Animals, talked to the audience gathered at 9 a.m. one Sunday about the film on factory farming. Billie Jean King and Emma Stone appeared at a free panel in the park to discuss Battle of the Sexes. And then there were the unplanned celebrity sightings. Ethan Hawke posed for pictures as he shopped on Colorado Avenue before ducking into the Sheridan Hotel. We saw Portman with her baby girl at the Madeline Hotel.
We also enjoyed a yoga class taught at our house and were picked up at the front door for a personalized jeep tour. We rode, with tops down and stomachs lurching, into the peaks of the mountains to explore the deserted mining camp that lured hundreds of hopefuls to Telluride in the 1870s.

Five members of my group were on a gondola with Stone and her assistant. Nobody openly acknowledged last year’s Best Actress Oscar winner, and she focused on the view while her colleague chatted with fellow passengers. One night, the eight women in our group went to the top of the mountain for a sunset photo before eating at Allred’s. There were some kids running around with their parents, and we asked one of the adults to take our picture and learned she was from Cambodia. “Oh! Have you seen First they Killed my Father?” I asked. “Yes, I have,” said our photographer, who then sheepishly told us she was an assistant director on the movie. The kids running around were Sareum Srey Moch, and Mun Kimhak, the girl and boy who beautifully carry most of the movie though they had never acted. Each of the young actors had brought one parent with them from Cambodia to see the premiere. In the movie, the children flee their home during the Communist Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. They end up in a labor camp, are trained as child soldiers and then escape and live in the wild. At one point they have to eat a snake to survive. I asked Sareum what that was like. She said it wasn’t good at all but teased Kimhak for liking it. When I asked for their autographs, they beamed and their parents took pictures of this first in the kids’ lives. Nothing like that has ever happened at our local theater with the reclining seats. Only at Telluride. Passes for the 2018 Telluride Film Festival, which runs Aug. 31-Sept. 3, go on sale this month. telluridefilmfestival.org

Cruising is more popular than ever, especially out of Port Tampa Bay, which just broke its record for the most passenger traffic in a single day. Nearly 20,000 set sail on a recent Sunday. No doubt leaving port with the more fashionable travelers — stripes and florals. And whether you’re traveling by ship, plane or train, the point is: Just go!
Passports. Tickets. Getting in the right line. Travelers can be intensely focused when they arrive at the cruise terminal. But once on board, a transformation happens: They begin to slow down, then relax after realizing: There are so many things to do — or not to do — that there are no wrong lines.

Traveling offers the opportunity to break out of daily routines. Sleep ridiculously late — even if it’s a beautiful day. Eat cake for breakfast. Go barefoot with a long dress. Show off your graffiti.
Graffiti duffel bag, $498, and wheelie, $698. Orange empire hobo bag, $378. Both from Henri Bendel, International Plaza, Tampa.
Whether on board Holland America Line’s Rotterdam, at a packed New York restaurant or in a cozy corner of a rustic villa, vacation calls for at least one night of dressing to the nines. That phrase, by the way, supposedly comes from the Duke of Edinburgh’s 99th Wiltshire Regiment, which was known as “the nines” in the late 1880s and renowned for its sharp appearance.
At left, strapless mauve handkerchief midi dress, $72. Stone necklace. T-strap cream shoes, $130. At right, cobalt-blue maxi dress, $156. All from Kits Well-Dressed, Tampa. White dot micro bag, $250. Henri Bendel, International Plaza, Tampa.

ike Di Girolamo’s angst over turning 50 was the catalyst for a new business and new phase of life. “I was not doing well with 50,” recounted Di Girolamo, now 56. “I had to change my outlook. I decided I’d rent a villa in Italy for a month and have all of my friends and family over.” TheseniorvicepresidentatRaymondJamesFinancial knewhewantedsomethinginatranquilsettingbutcloseto amajorcity.HefoundtheperfectvillaonVacationRentalBy OwnerinSabina,about30minutesnorthofRome. He kept in touch with the owners of the villa and ultimately developed an agreement that allowed him and two Italian business partners to have a long-term lease on the eight-bedroom, nine-bathroom home and surrounding property.
“I always had the goal to retire at 55. But what would I do? I can’t just do nothing,” Di Girolamo recalled. The villa gave him a place to retreat as well as a vacation business to build and oversee. The house boasts a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen, a baby grand piano, saltwater pool, sauna, rose garden, outdoor pizza oven, tennis court and views of hilltop castles. He rents the villa 12 to 16 weeks of the year and hosts culinary/cultural trips 18 to 24 weeks a year. He calls the latter La Cucina Sabina. Barbara Borasio, who trained in a three-star Michelin restaurant in Rome, is the lead chef. She is joined by various visiting chefs including Margaret Ann Burtchaell, owner of Margaret Ann’s Catering and Gourmet Cookies in St. Petersburg. Trips cost $3,200 to $3,400 a person. The villa can be rented for $5,000 to $12,000 per week, depending on the season, with summer being the peak. Some of the foods guests learn to make include roasted onion and shallot crostata, veal ricotta meatballs with tomato sauce, polenta and Italian pastries as well as homemade pasta, ravioli, pizza and risotto. “We try to make it so you’re cooking, but you’re not working too hard,” said Burtchaell, who will be teaching on a trip in September.

“Some love to cook, some like it, and some don’t come into the kitchen for anything but to watch or eat.” Many of the 16 guests on each trip are from the Tampa Bay area because of Di Girolamo, but others hail from as far away as Seattle or San Francisco. “We travel for food,” said Pamela Arbisi of St. Petersburg, who went on the tour with her husband, Michael. When they signed up for their first trip several years ago, she confided a worry to her husband. “We are going with 14 people. What if we don’t like them,” she recounted with a laugh. “They were between ages 22 and 80 and we got along well with everybody.” Lia Guerra of Tampa loved the up-to-date villa but also the estate that’s old and authentic. “You need lemons, you go out and pick the lemons,” she said. “You need basil, you go out and pick the basil.”

Excursions during the week include a private tour of Castello Savelli, a medieval castle in the hilltop town of Palombara, as well as visiting the town of Tivoli and the gardens of Villa d’Este. The group spends a day in Rome that ends with dinner hosted by locals on an apartment rooftop overlooking the city. There also are educational sessions and tastings at a winery and olive oil maker. “Bill and I went on every excursion,” Burtchaell said, referring to her husband. “We wouldn’t do all that if it were just the two of us here by ourselves. But the pace is not go, go, go.” “We did so much, but the pace was always slow,” agreed George Guerra. After all, this is Di Girolamo’s retirement. He’s not going to push anyone too much.

Retired banker and philanthropist David Straz Jr.

TAMPA’S GLOBAL AMBASSADOR BY AMY SCHERZER
T
ampa banker and philanthropist David A. Straz Jr. has flown to Liberia at least 25 times since his appointment as ambassador at large and honorary consul general to the tiny West African nation in 2005. Straz travels on his own plane, takes his own water and food, and unfailingly offers personal philanthropy and expertise to advance public education, such as the renovation of the David A. Straz Jr. Sinje Technical Vocational College, part of the University of Liberia. Four honorary doctorates hang on his wall, including ones from the Catholic University of Honduras and the Polytechnic University of Honduras, where he also serves as honorary consul general. He’ll receive a fifth honorary doctorate, from his alma
mater, Marquette University, on May 20. At home, Straz influences cultural and academic life with philanthropy that has put his name on Tampa’s performing arts center, the manatee hospital at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and an eight-story residence hall at the University of Tampa, where he is chair emeritus of the board of trustees. Major buildings carry the Straz name at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Marquette University in Milwaukee. Straz has served as chairman of the board of Tampa General Hospital and the Lowry Park Zoo Foundation. He is a director/trustee of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, a former king of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and a South Tampa resident with his wife, Catherine.

Madame President was Liberia’s first democratically elected president and Africa’s first elected female head of state. She right away called a meeting of all the honorary consuls and I was one of three or four who made the effort to come.” DAVID A. STRAZ JR.
Tell us about your twice-yearly trips to Liberia. The country was organized by freed American slaves who came over in the 1850s. It’s about the size of Tennessee, with 3.5 million people, very friendly, English-speaking. I’ve made a lot of friends there, mostly in government and small businesses. I go twice a year, always for Independence Day, July 26, with the exception of last year when elections were under way. There were 20 parties running and I had to remain neutral. And I didn’t go in 2014 because of the Ebola virus epidemic. It’s a very difficult society and I never take the family. I always go in my plane. I do have a pilot’s license but it’s a trip for a professional crew. This last trip took 8 1⁄2 hours going over and 11 hours and 20 minutes back due to 100knot headwinds. We take water and frozen food, steaks and hamburgers, and keep it in the hotel freezer. I just went in January for the installation of the new president, George Weah. He’s a world-class soccer player, one of the greatest players of all time. Have you enjoyed working with the outgoing president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who co-earned the 2011 Nobel Prize for her work on women’s rights? Madame President was Liberia’s first democratically elected president and Africa’s first elected female head of state. She right away called a meeting of all the honorary consuls and I was one of three or four who made the effort to come. Well, everyone else was fired by her and had to seek reappointment. We developed a very good friendship, and I saw her every time I went. She always asked me a lot of things and respected my opinions. She always had something for me to do, such as lead goodwill mission delegations to Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Gambia. She is a very bright woman. I was with her at the White House in 2007 when President Bush presented her the Medal of Freedom. Last month she received the Mo Ibrahim Prize of $5 million for leadership of an African nation. When I was chairman of the board of the University of Tampa, I asked her to accept an honorary degree and give the 2009 commencement address. The day before, she spent half a day at Berkeley Prep with my daughter Keebler and her class. Much of your philanthropy in Liberia is anonymous, in places that really need help. Why did you decide to become visibly involved when it came to higher education? I made arrangements and paid for two college renovations. One is a high school, but they call it the College of West

Africa in downtown Monrovia. President Sirleaf and many government officials went there. The bigger one was the technical college in Sinje, which had been looted and never opened. It is designed so that excombatants can take agricultural, auto mechanics, plumbing and electrical courses and get an associate’s degree. One night when I was there, President Johnson called the president of the University of Liberia into her home and with some persuasion, talked him into taking this junior college as a satellite campus so they can automatically go on after two years and get a bachelor’s. So that’s how the David A. Straz Jr. Sinje Technical Vocational College became part of the University of Liberia. I gave the commencement address at the first graduation class in December 2015. They’ve grown from 35 students initially to 85 in 2016 and this year 340. Any advice for potential travelers to Liberia? I stay at the Palm Spring Resort just outside of downtown Monrovia. It has running water and television and one of the two casinos in the country. Still no telephones, though everyone uses cell phones. Tourism is not a big part of the economy but it is important. The average person survives on about $1 a day. Unemployment is very, very high, and America sends millions and millions of foreign aid every year. Natural resources are the major industry — timber, iron ore, diamonds, rubber, some gold.

HOME, LUXURIOUS HOME
Doors around Tampa Bay will open wide for our annual Homes issue in March. Tour a Tampa house with seven kitchens, a home on the beach designed around favorite pieces of art and the family home of five in St. Petersburg that combines a busy life with luxury. (We’re talking 16 crystal chandeliers and a Lego loft that keeps the fun up high and those sharp, plastic pieces off the floor.) Those are among many more ingenious ideas in the coming issue, which shares a beautiful slice of Tampa Bay living. — Katherine Snow Smith
