from the editor

MAKING A LIST AND CHUCKING IT TWICE It’s Nov. 13, or sometime after that depending on when you are reading this. By no means would I think you would turn to my column first when this issue has so much to offer. You’ll likely head right to the fashion and see the stunning backdrops of locales around the world. Bay photo editor Patty Yablonski and photographer Scott Keeler transported our models in their cocktail best via projections and some complicated lighting. After perusing that spread, you may feast your eyes on some beautiful bites to eat that you can expect to see on the upcoming party circuit. You may feel a touch of nostalgia reading about a collection of vintage wind-up toys or decades of treasured Christmas decorations. As you come to the sampling of great gifts found at local shops, if you’re like me your relaxing time with Bay will give way to panic. It’s barely two weeks into November and you haven’t shot a Christmas card picture, booked plane tickets to visit family, much less started buying presents. For that reason, I want to share a little holiday tradition I started about 15 years ago. Every holiday season I make a list of all I need to do — and cross at least two things off. Not because I’ve accomplished them; I simply decide they don’t have to be done. The tradition started one year when my family couldn’t find a two-hour window to decorate our tree anytime before Dec. 21. I didn’t want to decorate after the kids went to bed or when my husband was out of town, and we had games, birthday parties or holiday parties lined up throughout the weekends. Decorating the tree as a family is a top priority for me, like it was when I was a child. So without telling our young daughters, my husband and I decided to skip the Christmas parade and spend a leisurely Saturday morning on the tree.

NOVEMBER 2016

We drank hot chocolate, listened to Christmas music and only suffered two or three ornament casualties. It was a liberating moment to realize we don’t have to do everything every year. Since then I always cross out different items on my annual to-do list. One year (or several years) I openly brought slice-and-bake cookies to a cookie exchange. Another year I didn’t write a single personal note on our Christmas cards. I’ve opted for gift cards instead of hunting for the perfect gift. I’ve hosted parties and locked bedroom doors instead of cleaning disaster areas — knowing full well we have long lost the keys and will be opening them with a barbecue skewer the next morning. Clearly I’m not the first to say the holidays have become more of a race to beat the clock than a time to enjoy friends, family, giving and sharing. Most of us will always feel pressure to get it all done, but there are ways to do less this season and enjoy it more. After all, I want you to have plenty of time to enjoy this issue. Thank you for reading. — Katherine Snow Smith Have comments, questions? Let us know. Contact Katherine Snow Smith at (727) 893-8785 or kssmith@tampabay.com.

ade Hamby doesn’t have a favorite. Each one of the 50-plus wind-up toys he sets up around his St. Petersburg home every holiday season makes

him smile. These aren’t just wind-up cars that crawl a few inches across the floor, or a plastic Santa who spouts: “Ho, ho, ho.” Hamby’s collection includes a circus elephant that balances on a rolling ball, a bicycle rider with hinged knees that bend as they pedal, and a bear who turns the pages of an A B C book. Almost all are made of metal. A few have felt accents.

“This guy is just hilarious,” Hamby said, winding up a miniature bartender in a black felt jacket. The figure moves his left hand up and down, shaking a cocktail shaker. Then the right hand holding a tiny martini glass moves inward and the left hand tilts to “pour” the drink. Finally the right hand goes up, lifting the martini glass to the bartender’s lips. Many of the toys are more than 40 years old. They were made in the United States, Spain, Japan, China, Russia and Germany long before the aid of modern technology.

The menagerie of wind-up toys, many more than 40 years old, are on display in the home of Wade Hamby.

I loved my uncle and it was meaningful for my aunt to give me the collection.” WADE HAMBY

Wade Hamby says the key to preserving his antique wind-up toy collection is to get the toys out only at Christmas.

Hamby’s uncle started the wind-up toy collection when he owned Lowe’s Cafe, a restaurant in Birmingham, Ala. “His employees gave him one every Christmas,” Hamby recounted from his Old Northeast home. Lowe’s was open from 1957 to 1977, so the collection grew steadily. Since Hamby was “sort of like a grandchild” as he puts it to his aunt and uncle, when his uncle died his aunt gave him the toy collection. Pam Hamby, Wade’s wife of 34 years, continued the tradition by giving her husband a wind-up toy every Christmas. Sons Walker and Mack are grown now, but were always excited in younger years to help pick the annual toy and see it unveiled on Christmas morning. She found many of the intricate toys long before eBay offered anything possible at the touch of a keyboard, relying on catalogs and connections for years. “There was one catalog early on, the company scoured basements and attics around the country,” Pam Hamby said. Now she often turns to Lilliput, a website that sells vintage toys and replicas. Tin Toy Arcade is another resource.

“I enjoy every one because each one is different,” Wade Hamby said. “I loved my uncle and it was meaningful for my aunt to give me the collection.” The key to preserving the toys is getting them out and displaying them just once a year. “I didn’t let the boys play with them by themselves. They helped me get them out of the boxes every year and learned to be very careful,” Hamby said. “As long as you put them away right after Christmas they’re okay. If you left those suckers out all the time they wouldn’t last this long.” Hamby gently wound up a pig standing on his hind legs and wearing a chef’s hat. “Now watch him,” he said, setting the toy on the kitchen table. The pig’s left arm jerks up and down three times, prompting a tiny metal T-bone steak to rise up out of the pan and drop back down. Then the right arm moves in and sprinkles a little salt shaker over the steak. “Can you believe that,” Hamby marveled. Perhaps he does have a favorite, after all.

xpect smaller tastes of more items on the passing platters and catering menus this holiday season. Thanks to Pinterest and other social media, party hosts and guests are looking for creative and picturesque foods and caterers are rising to their requests. “I think classics that are always going to be there are shrimp and beef tenderloin. But we are doing way more creative things, too,” said Margaret Ann Burtchaell, owner of Margaret Ann’s Catering in St. Petersburg. If only these pages were scratch and sniff. Or rather, scratch and taste.

Creativity always on the menu MARGARET ANN’S GOURMET COOKIES & CATERING “Cheese has always been popular but cheese boards are huge right now. In cooking class in Italy we did a lot of things with (cheese and) cooked fruits. It’s fun. You can do so many different things on a cheese board,” said owner Burtchaell. People like individual bites. Now instead of doing vegetables in a basket with a dip, each person will get a little cup with the dip in the bottom and a piece of celery, carrot or asparagus. She’s also offering a variety of four-layer trifles with such ingredients as chocolate whopper cookies, white chocolate mousse, black berries, raspberries and whipped cream. Those hosting business affairs usually tend to go for a more traditional menu while someone who knows their guests really well and doesn’t worry about surprising them tends to be more adventurous, Burtchaell laughed.

A little taste of everything PUFF ‘N STUFF EVENTS CATERING Puff ‘n Stuff Catering in Tampa also has some new popular items, many of which weren’t always considered bite size or passable foods. “The shot glass allows a lot of flexibility,” said Rosy Usmani, marketing director for Puff ‘n Stuff Catering in Tampa. “We have a beautiful pumpkin pot de creme served in a shot glass.” Clients can request multiple kinds of little bites of desserts, including pumpkin and egg nog flavored, to be served individually instead of big slices of one or two kinds of pies, for example. “With me I like to have a little bit of everything on the buffet. I like to have a little bite of everything so it’s 21 little bites,” Usmani said. And the more trips to the buffet to try another little bite or a new items sent out on the trays keep guests moving and make parties more active. “We have a wide variety of what’s popular with our clients. We ask them what kind of experience do they want to create,” Usmani said.

This tree holds ornaments Cathy Martin has collected since the 1970s as well as Jim Martin’s family heirlooms and treasures from his grandchildren Zoe, Audrey and Stella. Some of the garland is 1940s glass that hung on Cathy Martin’s grandmother’s tree. Throw in gifts that friends found at antique stores and yard sales and the tree is complete.

athy Martin and her sister used to stay up late watching the bubble lights on a small tree their mother put in their room every holiday season. “We would plug it in and try to guess which light would start bubbling first,” Martin recalled, standing next to a similar tree with lights filled with liquid.

This slender tree is filled with balls and other ornaments from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, At top, Cathy Martin points to the baby cup her grandmother gave her that’s now a treasured ornament.

Bubble lights were popular in the 1940s through the ‘70s. The liquid, most frequently methylene chloride, in the glass vials is heated by a lightbulb, and bubbles when it hits a boiling point. Martin’s childhood enchantment with Christmas and her family’s decorations made a lasting impact. Now she has close to 15 trees of all sizes, decorated in all manners throughout her own home in St. Petersburg. “Christmas is my thing,” said the assistant dean for career development at Stetson University College of Law. She loves the decorating, but the thrill of the hunt, getting post-holiday bargains and finding the rare ornament or tree, also drive Martin’s love of holiday decor. She pointed proudly to glass ornaments by Christopher Radko — Harry Potter, a dragonfly, a butterfly. “I got these at Saks for 90 percent off. That’s $7.50 instead of $75,” Martin raved.

Some are passed on from her family. Others are gifts. “When people know you like Christmas stuff, you get a lot of it,” Martin explained. The bubble light tree was the first birthday present given to her by her husband of 20 years, Jim Martin. The former City Council member, whom many credit with bringing the Dalí museum to town, certainly has an eye for the surreal. He also gave his wife the Christmas tree made of white goose feathers as an anniversary present. Some of her trees have themes. The “fruit tree” is filled with glass blackberries, apples, pears and strawberries. The small tree standing in an elegant champagne bucket is decorated only with balls made in the 1920s. Of another, she explained, “This is the ‘kitchen tree.’ I put a tree up in the kitchen one year, and the next thing I knew I’d hung a fork on it.” She had dinner guests start hanging items, too. Soon it was adorned with foil cupcake wrappers, tea bags, a small cheese grater and a recipe for “foolproof pie crust.” Because of Martin’s allergies, all the trees are artificial. But this makes the setup and cleanup much easier. “A lot of these get put away fully decorated,” Martin admitted. That’s her best decorating tip.

A candy cane cup and saucer sits among a vintage bottle brush tree collection.

International

FLAVOR & FLAIR BY AMY SCHERZER

Just hearing the word - Thanksgiving - summons heavenly visions of a plump turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. But only in America. Other countries didn’t have Puritans feasting on the blessings of an abundant harvest in 1621. They didn’t have Presidents George Washington (1789) and Abraham Lincoln (1863) proclaiming a nationwide holiday of appreciation for a full pantry, officially moved to the fourth Thursday in November by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. Rob Rowen continued nearly 400 years of culinary diplomacy when he invited colonels from Kenya and Bangladesh and their families to his home to experience America’s quintessential feast in the fall of 2007. Both officers were stationed at MacDill Air Force Base while serving in U.S. Central Command’s 50-nation coalition in the War Against Terrorism.

We want them (the Coalition) to see the private face as well, to see us as warm, generous, welcoming, thankful people, and this is one small way of doing that.” KATE WILDE

“It occurred to me that they really had no understanding of Thanksgiving,” said Rowen, owner of Nuance Art Gallery and “honorary ambassador” to the base, a title he earned as the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s military liaison. The learning was mutual, said Rowen, his family gained as much from the invitation as their guests. “From the beginning, Thanksgiving was a sharing of cultures, Europeans and Native Americans,” he pointed out. Word spread through the chamber membership, and this season Rowen matched military guests with more than 30 dinner hosts, all coordinated through CentCom and U.S. Special Operations Command. “We’ve had guests from 13 countries since we got involved in 2010,” said chamber member Kate Wilde of Davis Islands, rattling off Germany, Romania, Pakistan, Georgia, Lithuania and Kyrgyzstan, among them. She and husband Rob, a Vietnam War veteran, lived in London for nearly 10 years, and remember what it’s like to be made welcome in a foreign land. “We want them (the Coalition) to see the private face as well, to see us as warm, generous, welcoming, thankful people,” Wilde said, “and this is one small way of doing that.” The couple displays the flags of each guest’s country, she continued. “That warms them up. We have drinks outside and he makes a toast to their country and they toast back, saying how glad they are to be part of this universal holiday.” The Wildes easily host two dozen people, including local friends who clamor to be invited. Table conversations are

fascinating and always respectful, with topics touching on the Middle East and global terrorism. “Between courses, Rob pulls Trivial Pursuit questions, “usually geography or history, because they are so good at it,” Wilde said. Most of the military officers speak English, although not always their spouses. “Five years ago, we had two people from Poland and one didn’t speak any English at all,” Wilde recalled. “It just happened that we had two visitors from London joining us whose mothers were Poles. “Well, they greeted them at the door in Polish and they were just elated. They became friends that night and have visited each other on other occasions.” Ukrainian Col. Svitlana Boiko is eager for her first bite of pumpkin pie when she joins the Wildes for her first Thanksgiving meal. “In Kiev, we studied the American symbol of peace to thank the Indians,” said Boiko, who arrived in Tampa in late March. She especially got a kick out of hearing about the military custom of officers serving the holiday meal to enlisted soldiers. “That was really surprising and amazing,” she said, “to show that the work of each person is important. We’re doing the same job, same goals.” Tampa Palms residents Samantha Dammer and Linn Wyllie have hosted three times, a French colonel, a Bosnian family with teenagers and “twice South Koreans who had never eaten turkey,’” said Dammer, who researched every country to make sure her guests would be comfortable. “For example, roast turkey is rarely if ever eaten in Korea.”

We feel so grateful we get to meet these people and our other guests love meeting them. It’s a privilege.” DEBBIE LUNDBERG

One memory always makes her smile. “The wife of one of the Korean officers spoke very little English,” Dammer recalled. “Our two daughters got out their little picture books and taught her some new words.” Debbie and Michael Lundberg will welcome international guests to Thanksgiving dinner for the fourth time in a few weeks. They usually host “singles since our children are four-legged,” said Debbie, an author and inspirational speaker. “We feel so grateful we get to meet these people and our other guests love meeting them. It’s a privilege.” Michael will fry the turkey for 20 people, as well as pickles and onions, she said. “I make sure to tell them that fried is not typical.” Dinner is served on the lanai at their south Tampa home. “They’re usually not familiar with the holiday, and don’t know what to expect,” Lundberg said. “ Other than excessive amounts of food.” Previous guests have been French, Belgian and Danish, the latter brought his family over to meet the Lundbergs when they visited Tampa. Facebook makes it easy to stay in touch after they’ve returned to their home bases. “What I really love about Thanksgiving is that its not about gifts,” Lundberg said. “It’s about spending time together. In sharing the American traditions, we learn something about ourselves that we didn’t know.” Contact Rob Rowen at globalaction@earthlink.net if you are interested in hosting international guests.

Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly made us love the little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961. It’s been a staple in every closet and the reigning dress code at every cocktail party since. But 22 years before Holly strolled Fifth Avenue in her black, Vivien Leigh played a teenage Scarlett O’Hara who detested being forced to wear the color after her first husband died of measles. “Oh, Mother,” she confessed. “I know you’ll think I’m horrible, but I just can’t bear going around in black.” The black dress is timeless and looks good on almost everyone, but it can get lost among all the other black dresses. So this holiday season, add some color to your cocktail party palate and stand out in the crowd.

DRESSED IN

HOLIDAY STYLE Going out of town for a party? Don’t have time for a last-minute pressing before guests arrive? Ralph Lauren offers up the perfect gift in this red jersey gown that flows like water and won’t wrinkle. The embellishment at the waist gives it a vintage look and the perfect amount of flair. Accompany any cocktail dress (even a little black one) with this Judith Leiber bag encrusted in Austrian crystals and you have a perfect nod to the festive season. All Judith Leiber bags are known as conversation pieces as well as fashion accessories. They can break the ice at a dinner table or be just what you need to catch the bartender’s eye at a crowded party. Top hat crystal pave miniaudiere covered in Austrian crystals ($5,995), Judith Leiber; crystal-embellished satin sandals ($1,150), Rene Caovilla, both from Neiman Marcus, International Plaza, Tampa.

LET YOUR HEART

BE BRIGHT

ALL THE

TRIMMINGS Why should the Christmas tree get all the bling? Even with sequins and feathers, this top at left isn’t too over the top because it’s all black and white. The T-strap heels add just enough color with brightly colored pom poms. But if you want to keep the tinsel on the tree, this green Dolce & Gabbana fitted classic at right is understated yet amazing with ornamental dragonflies.

At left, velour pants ($184), Avenue Montaigne, Deborah Kent Women’s Apparel, 2120 S Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa. Sequin top with feather trimming ($78), Endless Rose; diamond-shape earrings ($69), Rebel design, both from Shandy Style Boutique, 4336 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg. “Layla” metallic T-strap sandal with pom poms and tassel details ($650), Sophia Webster, Nordstrom, International Plaza, Tampa. At right, dragonfly-embellished lace midi dress ($4,295), Dolce & Gabbana, Neiman Marcus, International Plaza, Tampa.

BREAK OUT THE

BUBBLY This dress by Milly is characteristic of the collection’s bold fashion with feminine flair. Milly founder and designer Michelle Smith combines advanced contemporary fashion with classic silhouettes. She merges American edge with Parisian detail. The Connecticut native came by it honestly. She studied fashion in Philadelphia and New York before landing an internship at the Paris headquarters of Hermes. She continued studying fashion at ESMOD fashion school in Paris and later interned with Louis Vuitton, Torrente and Christian Dior Haute Couture. After three years she returned to New York and gave us Milly in 2001.

IKE BA NA STORY BY PENNY CARNATHAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY LARA CERRI

As a 30-something American in 1959, Barbara Goss knew Japan only as a producer of cheap toys and tchotchkes. So when GE transferred her husband to Tokyo that year, “I was just blown away. I had no idea of the culture, the flower arranging, bonsai, calligraphy. Most of their art is understated. They call it shibui, serene duty — a quiet elegance.” She quickly enrolled in classes that taught ikebana, the ancient art of Japanese flower arrangement based in Buddhist tradition. It has been a tranquil river of zen in her life ever since.

Driftwood with painted fan palm fronds: Sogetsu Group arrangement by teacher Barbara Goss and students.

“It’s a way to enjoy the moment,” says Goss, who studied under the founder of the Sogetsu School, one of the predominant schools of ikebana. Her mastery of the skills led to her own certification as a teacher by the time she and her husband moved to St. Petersburg with their five children in 1965. For the next three decades, she owned and ran John’s Pass Marina in Treasure Island. A busy mom with a demanding job, she needed restorative downtime. She found it in ikebana, joining St. Petersburg’s thriving chapter 65 of Ikebana International. “When you’re in ikebana or yoga or tai chi, where you’re very focused, it changes the way you react to life,” she says. “Things that would normally bother you are not that big a deal.” All ikebana designs have a sculptural quality based on

scalene triangles — those with three unequal sides — created by using the lines, textures, forms and colors found in nature. Practitioners pay as much attention to the positive image, the picture created by arranging the materials, as the negative, the empty space framed by those branches, flowers and leaves. While ikebana creations incorporate every phase of a plant’s life, including death, the Tampa Bay area offers delectable, year-round opportunities for color and blooms — one reason, perhaps, that chapter 65 has flourished since its founding in 1962. “This is a lush and tropical paradise, an opportunity to open up and expand,” says Aimee Jackson, who moved to St. Petersburg three years ago from Washington, D.C., in part because of the chapter’s reputation.

“We work with three main stems. The lengths of those three major stems is measured in proportion to the container and then in their relationships to each other,” explains Jackson, an artist and one of Goss’ students. While most Japanese children are taught the art early in school, people can pick it up at any age. The first step is mastering basic upright and slanting arrangements. Students start out with two types of containers: shallow ones, called moribana, and tall cylinders, or nageire. As their skill grows, designers add personal, free-form elements. “You have to leave room for interpretation, for the type of material, the colors,” says Jackson. “If you give the same materials to a group of people, each one is going to use them in an entirely different way.” Jackson and Goss constantly search their surroundings for materials, which makes them view the world with a greater appreciation of the beauty in every slender grass, every twist of a brown twig. That awareness flows into other daily routines in unexpected ways.

“You start to look at all natural things differently,” Goss says. “If you’re making a salad, you might say, ‘Maybe this tomato would look better over here.’ Or maybe you put a leaf under your poached fish instead of serving it plain. You see how you can arrange things in a way that others can enjoy.” They also grow plants with an eye toward future arrangements. “I have lots of different types of ferns, variegated small elephant ears, lilies, different types of grasses, trees with different limb shapes,” Jackson says. “We’re trying to make it so it’s out there for everybody. It’s a wonderful interaction with nature.”

INTERESTED IN IKEBANA? If you have an interest in exploring ikebana, visit your local Ikebana International chapter. The Tampa Bay area has two chapters, St. Petersburg and Sarasota. The nonprofit global association lists chapters and other information at ikebanahq.org. Chapter 65 meets at 10 a.m. the third Monday of the month beginning again in September at Chapel on the Hill United Church of Christ, 12601 Park Blvd., Seminole. The chapter holds two public exhibitions, one in late winter at Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg and another in the spring at the Treasure Island Community Center, 154 106th Ave., Treasure Island. The latter includes demonstrations, a flower shop and displays for sale.

All photographs shot at “Ikebana in the Garden” at Sunken Gardens, St. Petersburg.

GRIDIRON PASSION

Andra Douglas owns the New York Sharks professional women’s football team, which is part of the Women’s Football Alliance. She is also an accomplished artist who spends time between New York City and the Tampa Bay area.

ndra Douglas owns a football team that has no endorsements, makes no money and is never on TV. “Yet we survive,” said the Zephyrhills-born owner of the New York Sharks women’s tackle football team. “We’ve been doing this for 17 years. I love it.”

Her first stint — as quarterback playing at Mitchell Field on Long Island in 1999 — was what sealed the deal. She no longer plays, but is a big advocate for female tackle football’s roughly 60 U.S. teams that include the Tampa Bay Inferno. While it seems most people are unaware that female tackle football exists, there are devoted athletes across the country and the world who pay their own way to play, and owners like Douglas who keep them going. “We’ve got teachers, doctors, nurses, trainers, techies, truck drivers, poets, students,” she said of the 40 women ages 18 to 50 who play for the Sharks.

Douglas grew up an avid football fan, going to games at Zephyrhills High and Florida State University regularly. She played on flag teams any chance she had. After graduating from Florida State, Douglas went to Pratt Institute to get a master’s in fine arts and joined a women’s flag football team in Brooklyn. Since it had the best record in the country, when two female tackle teams in the Midwest wanted an opponent in 1999 for an exhibition game they called on the women from Brooklyn. “They said, ‘We’ll send you the pads and the helmets.’ We beat them 12 to 6,” Douglas recalled with a laugh.

For girls who haven’t had a chance to do a lot of things, when they can say to themselves, ‘Hey, I can throw that football’ or ‘Hey, I pulled that flag,’ that gives them a new sense of confidence.” ANDRA DOUGLAS Brilynn, by Andra Douglas.

The next year organizers started a women’s tackle league. It cost $20,000 to join. Fresh off their victory, the Brooklyn flag-turned-tackle team tried to find a buyer to pay their way to the league. When no takers emerged, Douglas spent her savings to buy the team herself. It became one of the first 11 franchises in the country. The Sharks play April to August in high school stadiums in front of about 200 spectators. Douglas has tried to get TV coverage and more national attention, but for now, it’s not happening. So the games are largely for the players. “I think this is always something they’ve wanted to do and they didn’t know it existed,” she said. “Some come and they get hit once and they don’t come back. Most of them say ‘this is great’.” But with plenty of flag football opportunities for women to pass, run and catch, why do they want to add the component of being knocked down? “I think it’s the knocking down that they like,” she said with a sly smile. “I asked a ref once what was the difference in how we play. He said, ‘The women smell better. Other than that there is no difference.’ ” Football is Douglas’ passion, but graphic design was her day job for many years. As vice president of creative at Atlantic Records’ WarnerVision Entertainment, she designed packaging and marketing for Jane Fonda exercise videos and Led Zeppelin and Natalie Cole, among other projects. More recently she has been a design consultant in New York and co-manages development and conservation of her family’s K-Bar Ranch in Pasco and Hillsborough counties. She commutes regularly between New York and Tampa Bay. An artist as well, Douglas’ latest works depict female football players and coaches. She photographs them, prints

them in archival ink on bamboo paper, then overpaints the images with oils, colored pencils and other mediums. Women smile and glare behind face masks with black grease under their eyes and hair flowing from their helmets. “They make great subjects. They are so real, they just bubble up,” Douglas said. She also paints more relaxing scenic shots of the Hamptons and Zephyrhills. She has homes in both. Her work will be in Miami’s Art Basel show in December, and shows are planned for St. Petersburg, Charlotte, N.C., and New York in the spring. As proud as Douglas is of the Sharks, her favorite day of the season is not a game day. It’s a weekend in the fall when the team coaches about 75 girls ages 13 to 17 from across New York at a football camp. The team’s Fins Up Foundation, which Douglas started in 2003, provides transportation for girls from at-risk neighborhoods to the free camp, where they play flag football and meet female mentors and sometimes an NFL player or two. “For girls who haven’t had a chance to do a lot of things, when they can say to themselves, ‘Hey, I can throw that football’ or ‘Hey, I pulled that flag,’ that gives them a new sense of confidence,” Douglas said. Whether the girls have goals of being a football player, doctor, truck driver or coach, seeing strong women doing what they love inspires them. Three current Sharks players attended the Fins Up camp as young girls. Another big event coming up will be the Women’s World Games Jan. 21-29 in Orlando. A vetted U.S. team, as well as players from other countries, will compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Yes. A wide world of sports, indeed.

VIP CHIHULY HOMECOMING GALA Traffic stopped on Central Avenue as art patrons celebrated the new home of the Chihuly Collection under an almost full moon. About 150 people mingled inside and out enjoying dinner, live music and, of course, the colorful glass creations of Dale Chihuly at the VIP Chihuly Homecoming Gala. Morean’s professional artists entertained guests with live glassblowing demonstrations and clay demonstrations, and the band Stolen Idol provided live music. Locale’s Farmtable Kitchen, Sea Salt and Ruth’s Chris teamed up for the culinary spread. Concept Bait created a colorful tablescape, tent décor and lighting that reflected Dale Chihuly’s love for color.
