Bay asked representatives from the bevy of area museums: What is the standout piece guests must see if they could only enjoy one taste of their collections? Needless to say, it was extremely hard to narrow the list of so many important works and artifacts. Someofferedthreetitlesand thosewerenarrowedtoone. Fortunately, these museums are available to Tampa Bay residents most days of the year, so there’s plenty of time to absorb the hundreds of pieces at each one.

THE DALÍ MUSEUM ST. PETERSBURG Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham LincolnHomage to Rothko, 1976 Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) Dalí was inspired by the November 1973 issue of Scientific American. An article, “The Recognition of Faces,” by Leon D. Harmon, featured a reproduced low-resolution (252 pixels) monochromatic photograph of the face of Abraham Lincoln from a $5 bill. It demonstrated the low quantity of information needed to represent a recognizable individual face, an idea that fascinated Dalí.

THE FLORIDA HOLOCAUST MUSEUM ST. PETERSBURG Boxcar #113 069-5

Boxcar #113 069-5 now rests on original tracks from the Treblinka Killing Center as a silent tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust and is featured as part of the History, Heritage and Hope permanent exhibition. Photograph courtesy of the Florida Holocaust Museum

The boxcar is one of the few remaining of the type used by Nazis to transport Jewish people and other prisoners to places such as Auschwitz and Treblinka. It rests on original tracks from the Treblinka Killing Center. Boxcars spelled doom, as 100 or more people were squeezed into one car and subjected to hunger, thirst and horrible sanitation.

THE JAMES MUSEUM ST. PETERSBURG Red Talkers, 1978 Paul Pletka (1946- )

HENRY B. PLANT MUSEUM TAMPA

Red Talkers, a translated name for the Cheyenne tribe, are pictured here engaged in the Bull Society Dance. Shields were made from bison hindquarters. Dancers wore horned headdresses and danced feverishly around chaste girls considered sacred and symbolizing fertility. The men feel themselves being transformed into bison — a metamorphosis. One dancer’s personal medicine symbols, green mice, emerge from his rib cage. The other dancer also feels his medicine take life, as his flesh opens to reveal bees and honeycomb.

Garden Seat in the Form of a Frog late 19th century Artist unknown Pottery with majolica glaze. Purchased by Henry Plant for the 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel. The museum, housed in the former hotel, reflects the opulence of turn-of-thecentury America and the vision of Plant, an American transportation pioneer.

It is incredibly important to Tampa’s early development, and had been lost for more than 100 years after being packed away 1869. It was found in Ozona in Pinellas County in the 1980s and gifted to the museum.

This is the only full-scale reproduction of Guernica in the world, authorized by Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain. A nine-minute audio and light show explains the history and symbolism of the renowned work. Picasso created it in 1937 after the Nazi bombing on the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The mural shows the tragedies of war on innocent civilians.

ST. PETERSBURG MUSEUM OF HISTORY ST. PETERSBURG Loafer Lodge, 1915 William L. Straub, (1867-1939) Painted by former editor and publisher of the thenSt. Petersburg Times, this painting depicts pioneer-era Pass-a-Grille and offers a view of Cabbage Key (Tierra Verde) from the porch of one of the first homes built on the barrier island, prior to sidewalks and roads.

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS ST. PETERSBURG Village Girl–Lily Cow, 1915 Robert Henri (1865-1929) It departs radically from Henri’s usual palette and the dark backgrounds that characterize his portraits, especially those of children — although they are executed with the same exuberant brushwork.

IMAGINE MUSEUM ST. PETERSBURG Fluent Steps, 2017 Martin Blank (1962- )

Built when cars were few and trains were plenty, the Atlantic Coast Line train station that houses the museum is a must-see piece of history. Inside, the museum’s collection of 2,000 artifacts and 2,500 photos tell the history of Dunedin’s railroads, citrus industry, pioneering families, beaches, sports, military contributions and more. The building and interior have recently undergone a $500,000 renovation.

This piece was specifically created for the new museum in the former Imagine Charter School on Central Avenue. It is 91 inches high, 26 inches around and weighs 350 pounds. The sculpture is part of Blank’s Crystal Skin series, which was inspired by the forest.

This sink seems as though it is carved out of a single block of limestone. Sandi Chancey says it’s modern, yet warm and inviting.

Enrique Crespo thinks this simple vessel sink works well in a bathroom that is overflowing with vibrant colors and textures.

MICHELLE MILLER DESIGN

The firm custom designed these vanities, giving them unique mirrors that double as sconces for the faucets.

This powder room is the first room inside the front door, so it had to impress and introduce the style of what was to come, Stephanie Finelli Everhart says.

Solid walnut treads suspended from a central steel spine allow for plenty of light and air in this enclosed staircase, Sandi Chancey says.

SOBEIT INTERIORS

Stephanie Finelli Everhart bought this painting, Ginger City, in St. Petersburg, thinking it the perfect complement to this staircase in an Atlanta-area home.

STAIRCASES

OXFORD DESIGN STUDIO This staircase welcomes guests into the Stovall House with a wooden pineapple finial atop the handrail. The house is a private membership club opening soon in South Tampa.

CRESPO DESIGN GROUP

The drama of a sweeping staircase is heightened by artwork and an iron banister, Enrique Crespo says.

CHANCEY INTERIOR DESIGN

Sandi Chancey wanted a low fireplace to maintain this home’s views of the grand oaks and the golf course. The fireplace, which has two sides, warms the lanai as well as the family room.

CRESPO DESIGN GROUP

The fireplace, clad in Mexican selenite to add a translucent texture, is the focus of this living room. Enrique Crespo calls the fireplace original and beautiful.

FIREPLACES OXFORD DESIGN STUDIO

The wide-joint mortar encasing this fireplace provides an old-world look and creates the illusion of age, Jordan Winston says.

SOBEIT INTERIORS

Chinoiserie pottery, spool chairs and bookcases filled with vintage pieces surround this fireplace with “homey gentility,” Stephanie Finelli Everhart says.

DECKER ROSS INTERIORS

Bookshelves flank a stackstone wall with a TV above a contemporary gas fireplace. This adds a cozy ambiance to the gathering room, which was designed by Marci Tempesta. NOVEMBER 2018

TAKE A BOW, Ari Loar

Photographs by James Borchuck

hen Ari Loar meets with clients to design a yacht, the bar already is set high. Very high. “Most of these people have houses all over the world before they end up buying a boat this big,” the St. Petersburg designer said. “I really try to create some wow factor in each corner.” To do that, she goes to the Milan furniture show every April, and the domestic show in High Point, N.C., in October, as well. Her 20 years of experience designing yachts from scratch with two boating companies help as well. Some of the wow factors that Loar has incorporated into yachts from Tampa Bay to Tahiti include wine cellars and cabinets, a hibachi bar that seats 10 and a hot tub with retractable roof for views of sunsets and stars as well as shelter during storms.

How’s this for a bar view? Or you can slip into the hot tub on this 136-footer.

One yacht has acrylic jelly fish in the walls that give the appearance of an aquarium. Another features a glass divider between in the master suite and bathroom. With the touch of a button it can turn opaque for privacy or retract for a more spacious feeling. “I do a turnkey project. The only thing I do not buy for them is the food,” Loar explained. “They are completely furnished from bedding to china.” She usually creates a secret stash for a gun or sometimes several because of pirates at sea. Massage rooms are frequent requests, and Loar has even helped design a few “sex rooms.” She’s quick to say she doesn’t begin to know how to equip them, but creates a room with built-in drawers and a reinforced ceiling. A native of Chile, Loar got a degree in design at a university there, then worked with an architect several years before studying at the Savanna College of Art and Design.

After graduating, she worked for InterMarine Yachts, designing complete interiors. After moving to Tampa Bay fifteen years ago, she continued to do the same for Lazzara Yachts. In 2009, she started Ari Loar Interiors to design and redesign yachts as well as homes. “Many of my clients from the yachts end up wanting me to help them with their homes,” she said. Her latest project is a 40,000-square-foot house outside Cleveland. One of its more impressive facets is a detailed mosaic of two peacocks. Loar discovered the mosaic company in Milan. It makes custom works using as many as 45,000 tiles and can form pictures of anything the client requests — even a replica of their children or dogs. “You see everything in Milan first. The color trends — you always see them first,” Loar said. “The upholstery in Italy is phenomenal. The leather is amazing. There is nothing like it anywhere else.”

I do a turnkey project. The only thing I do not buy for them is the food. They are completely furnished from ARI LOAR bedding to china.”

The 145-foot Trinity yacht.

In a typical year, Loar works on about four yachts and three homes. Homes are bigger, but boats are harder. Because of the constant pounding a boat takes from the water as well as the elements, there are limitations on the size and weight of materials and furniture. Also, boats carry fuel and thus pose a fire risk. “Some of these boats, they have restrictions on what materials can used. They have to be marine-certified, so you have to keep track of every fabric and screw you put in,” Loar explained. She designs most pieces of furniture, which are then custom made in Bradenton. “My clients have been exposed to the latest and greatest of everything,” Loar said. “I always have to keep that in mind.”

Laurie Elliott and Heidi Jinks opened their store off of Kennedy Boulevard in 2009. The 4,000-square-foot former biscuit factory now houses hundreds of pieces of furniture, rugs, art and much more. The owners go early to the annual furniture market in High Point, N.C., to find unique pieces. They also have sources throughout the United States, Europe and Indonesia who scout antique stores and street markets. Jinks and Elliott, who have a second store in Nashville, promote Tampa Bay artists as well as painters from Alabama and potters from Maine. Plan on at least an hour to walk through the store and take it all in.

The necklaces of pearls and the vintage medals by Love, Nina Jane featured in several of these photos come with a story. The three women who make these distinctive pieces grew up in Lake Charles, La. Their mothers, one from New York and one from Dallas, met there in the 1960s when they both moved to town with husbands who were starting a medical practice. The women immediately had something else in common: they both were named Nina Jane. Decades later, when their daughters started a jewelry business, they knew immediately what to name it. Jane Kalpakis works from Tampa while her two childhood friends and business partners are in Mississippi and Tennessee. At first, they found vintage medals at flea markets in the United States, Europe and on eBay. Now they have a picker from the Netherlands. “He has a really good eye,” Kalpakis said. But Love, Nina Jane is far from an international conglomerate. “We make everything ourselves at our kitchen tables,” she laughed. Necklaces range from $28 to $598 and are sold locally at Marketplace Interiors and Juxtapose.

But we couldn’t stop. Plastic has undoubtedly made our lives more convenient. But at what cost? Our family has been involved in the community of Clearwater Beach for over seventy years. S

cott Meister can remember being almost as tall as the tables laden with food at Christmas parties at Annabelle’s Antiques, the store in which his grandparents owned a minority stake. Henry and Anne Meister bought it with their friends Jack and Annabelle Johns in 1979, the year Meister was born. Soon, the owners found they couldn’t keep the 4,000-square-foot shop in Odessa filled with antiques, so they expanded to include new furniture. Fast forward to 2016 and the next generation of the Johns family was ready to get out of the furniture business. They told Scott Meister, who, with his family, owned the small shopping center known as Fox’s Corner that had formed around the store. It sits across from a cow pasture at a peaceful crossroads in Odessa, though designers and homeowners from throughout Tampa Bay make the drive regularly to find custom furniture. “The initial thought was we don’t want to lose that tenant,” Scott Meister said. Annabelle’s had grown to occupy 18,000 square feet. “As we looked at it and thought about it, we recognized the value of the name and reputation of Annabelle’s.” So Scott and his brother, Eric, bought the retailer to add to their list of other businesses. They own Dade City-based Cornerstone Solutions Group, a full-service landscape and hardscape company along with Mainstay Construction and other real estate ventures. Scott Meister also owns Tampa-based Russell’s Western Wear, which has seven Florida locations. “With Russell’s, I already had retail experience,” Scott Meister said. Since buying Annabelle’s, he’s been to the furniture market in High Point, N.C., but isn’t the one picking out the custom pieces that fill the store. “I’ve done it, but I’m not very good at it. So we have people working here who are great at it,” he explained. “I’m not a cowboy either, but I’m in the boot business.” All of Annabelle’s sales people are designers. They care more about creating a coherent room or home than selling furniture off the floor.

Brothers Eric Meister, 37, right, and Scott Meister, 39, are the co-owners of Annabelle’s Fine Furniture & Interior Design .

Typically our customers are here three to four times spending hours with designers. They are picking out paint colors, rugs, accessories. Our designers will go to the delivery and help SCOTT MEISTER them set up the room.” “Part of the experience here is we get someone building or renovating a home to sit with a designer,” Eric Meister said. “Very rarely do we have somebody who comes in on a Friday and wants something on a Saturday.” Since most of what the store sells is custom-made, much of it in the United States, orders take six to 12 weeks to arrive. “You can go find your neighbor’s living room and have it delivered tomorrow. But if you want your own room that no one else is going to have, it’s going to take three months,” Scott Meister said. “It’s a bigger conversation. With custom orders, clients can change features such as the fabric, the color, the width of the arms, the curve of the headboard and the pattern of studs. And to keep the showroom fresh, Annabelle’s has a tent sale in fall and spring to liquidate floor models. “Our commitment is to keep it fresh and keep it new,” Scott Meister said. “We want people to walk in here and say ‘This is incredible. I love this.’ I can’t wait to come back the next time and see what else they have.”

Making design challenges work. Beautifully. Moving in means moving boxes. All the little things that make a house a home are in those cardboard boxes. Things you’ve collected over time. We appreciate how precious these things are, and as much as possible we include them in the new design for your interior. Because new doesn’t exclude familiar and dear. So we welcome your boxes. haron Smith’s husband thought the small plant shop she opened in 1975 would be a short-lived phase. “I remember overhearing him say to our friends how sweet it was I had a hobby outside the home,” Smith, owner of The Potting Shed in South Tampa, said.

The Potting Shed owner Sharon Smith specializes in creating fine floral arrangements that range from rustic to refined.

NOVEMBER 2018

She managed to be home by 2 p.m. every afternoon with their two young sons, but still made a profit in the first year. Her husband, Cliff, was surprised. “I wasn’t. I loved the challenge of buying a product and selling to the public,” Smith said. Her love of flowers and entrepreneurial streak came naturally. “I grew up in a family surrounded by beautiful, witty, intelligent women. They all spoke their minds and all of them had a cutting garden,” she explained. “There were always flowers on the breakfast-room table and in the kitchen window.” Smith began buying fresh flowers wholesale and creating little “love bunches” wrapped with twine displayed in baskets to sell along with the plants. She was stunned how quickly they sold out. A trip to New York City to visit her sister spawned an expansion of the business.

The Potting Shed features both fresh and artificial plants. These are paper flowers.

“I saw corner shops selling flower stems on street corners. No one in Tampa was doing this,” she recounted. “I designed a cooler with rows of flower buckets and doors which easily opened so customers could buy flowers by the stem. I pride myself on being the first bucket shop in Tampa.” The Potting Shed became a mainstay for fresh flowers. And then there was another catalyst. A woman came in with a sterling silver compote and asked Smith to fill it with flowers for a party. Smith couldn’t believe she was getting paid to arrange flowers, something she loved doing. “I enrolled in a flower-design course to learn the basics. I found the designs to be stilted and so stiff,” she said. “I took the basics I learned like taping and using floral foam to design arrangements depicting my mother’s and grandmother’s cutting gardens. I was thrilled with the results and so were my customers.

NOVEMBER 2018

Smith sees herself and her “exceptional” staff as designers, not florists. When a customer orders a centerpiece for a dining-room table, they ask if it’s an antique or modern, what’s the color of the walls and what the chandelier above looks like. She goes to the merchandise market in Atlanta three times a year to keep up with trends and stock the store with vases, cache pots, gifts and more. The Potting Shed’s fun, relaxed atmosphere is a big part of its success. It hosts a happy hour every Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., serving homemade Sangria from Smith’s mother’s recipe. “I am having a wonderful time. A day does not pass when I walk into the back door of my shop in the morning without a smile on my face,” she said. After 43 years in business, and having just designed all the flowers for their son’s wedding, Cliff Smith certainly sees his wife’s brave venture as much more than a little hobby.

“ I enrolled in a flower-design course to learn the basics. I found the designs to be stilted and so stiff. I took the basics I learned like taping and using floral foam to design arrangements depicting my mother’s and grandmother’s cutting gardens. These arrangements showcase the eclectic style of the store.

A day at the

spa

doctors BY JUSTINE GRIFFIN

The University of South Florida is about to open a health center in South Tampa where women can get their annual exams, stay for lunch prepared by an in-house nutritionist, and see lab results before they leave. At Dr. Parveen Vahora’s obstetrician-gynecologist practice in Trinity, patients can buy reproductive physical therapy tools — otherwise known as sex toys — with the guidance of a doctor and in private, without the awkwardness of an adult store.

INSPIRATION PLACE And in Wesley Chapel, a new clinic called Inspiration Place looks more like a day spa, with soft purple lighting, glass-paneled offices and a waterfall feature at the entrance. Patients can see a range of specialists, from a physical therapist to a urologist, and get any imaging or blood work done the same day. They also can enhance their visit with a massage, a facial, an eyebrow waxing, a trip to the clinic’s coffee bar or a spin through its jewelry and handbag boutique. With patients gaining access to ever more options, some providers are finding it’s not enough anymore to offer just health care. They are separating themselves from the pack with what has come to be known as “concierge medicine,” offering perks to women, often the heads of households, who are looking for some comfort and more of an “experience” at the doctor’s office. “Ihaveneverseenamodelthisspecificset-upforwomen,”said Dr.GinaKirkpatrick, aurologistwithFloridaHospitalwhosees patientsatInspirationPlace, whichopenedlatelastyear. “Women are busy,” she said. “We have less and less time to wait around for results or to make appointments on another day for follow-ups. We need to be sensitive to patients’ needs.” Inspiration Place is a women’s health-care clinic at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. The clinic offers routine health services with a twist — spa services like manicures and massage, with a coffee bar and a boutique, as well as a wide array of clinical services. THE PAMELA MUMA WOMEN’S HEALTH CENTER

The Pamela Muma Women’ s Health Center will open later this year as a “one-stop shop” for women’s health-care needs at the USF Health building on the Tampa General Hospital campus. Photographs courtesy of USF

Pamela Muma had a health scare three years ago. During a routine exam, doctors found something irregular and told her to schedule several follow-up tests to rule out anything serious. But the process of setting up multiple appointments was tedious and slow. “I was having a difficult time getting things scheduled and trying to get those results,” said Muma, 72, whose health ended up being fine. “And I’m a person who has all these medical contacts at my disposal,” she added, citing her philanthropic and strategicplanning involvement with the University of South Florida and its medical school. “If I’m having a difficult time, it made me think that the average woman in Tampa Bay who is not at all involved in health care is going to have a much harder time,” she said. “So I decided things have to change.” Mumaandherhusband,Les,whoarealreadywell-known benefactorstoUSF,gave$2milliontotheuniversitytoopenanew women’shealthcenter, whichwillbehousedattheUSFHealth buildingontheTampaGeneralHospitalcampus.ThePamela MumaWomen’sHealthCenterisexpectedtoopenbeforetheendof theyear,andaimstobeaone-stopshopforallwomen’shealth-care needs,saysthecenter’smedicaldirector,Dr.EmilyHaly. “Concierge medicine is basically making doctors more available for the patient,” said Haly, who ran her own concierge practice in Charleston, S.C., for three years before moving to Tampa Bay last summer. “Patients can call me anytime to get the information they need quickly. We’ll have the availability to coordinate any type of care if a specialist is needed. All routine appointments, from general exams to lab work, will be handled that day.” Most doctors, generally speaking, have anywhere from 1,800 to 2,000 patients they’re responsible for. In the new center at USF, each physician might be responsible for 500 to 600, so they can be accessible 24/7, Muma said. While health insurance will cover the costs of most routine exams, women will likely pay a bit more outof-pocket for the extra access, Muma said. Overall costs are still being ironed out. DR.PARVEENVAHORA

Patients are more educated now, which is great. They come in, sometimes with their husbands, and ask questions.” DR. PARVEEN VAHORA

Dr. Parveen Vahora began selling vibrators in her office nearly nine years ago to help women who struggled with intimacy and reproductive pain. “At first I sold glass tools to massage pressure points. If you have a knot on your back or shoulder, you’d massage it right? It’s no different with the vagina,” Vahora said. “Patients didn’t want to go to physical therapy for this, so I found tools that they could use at home.” Vahora sells Luna Beads, used to stimulate stronger orgasms and for Kegel strengthening exercises, and Lelo-brand vibrator sex toys as modes of therapy for women. In addition, she offers vaginal rejuvenation using MonaLisa Touch treatments. “Are you really going to go to the sex-toy store to get this? I knew patients weren’t going to do it,” Vahora said. “Patients can go online and order these for themselves now, or they can buy them through our office. Either way, I think they feel more comfortable having a conversation and consultation about it.” Vahora said this is just one perk she offers for patients in an effort to maintain a non-judgemental and stress-free environment in her clinic. “Patientsaremoreeducatednow, whichisgreat.Theycomein, sometimeswiththeirhusbands, andaskquestions.Someofthese toolscanbeboughtthroughhealthsavingsaccounts, too,”shesaid. Back at Inspiration Pace, Kirkpatrick sends many of her postsurgery patients to the women’s clinic for physical therapy and follow-up appointments. She said they often lump in routine OB-GYN care while they’re there, too. That’s what Deborah Giella did during a recent post-operation appointment at Inspiration Place with Kirkpatrick. What she loved most about the experience was that she got everything she needed for the year done in one trip. Health insurance covers the cost of most clinical services, but patients should be prepared to pay for spa services. “It’sjustsoconvenient,”saidGiella,56,wholivesinDadeCity. “Youdon’tfeellikeapatientwhenyou’rehere.I’mnotusedtothat.”

HELPING THOSE WHO CAN’T AFFORD

AN ORGAN TRANSPLANT LIVE TO TELL ABOUT IT

Every day in America, thousands of people are informed they need an organ transplant. Overwhelmed by the diagnosis, as well as the financial burden it represents, many of these patients turn to us. We are National Foundation for Transplants. For 35 years, we have helped patients with nearly $85 million in financial assistance for transplant-related costs that are not covered by public or private insurance. What’s more, we benefit patients and their families way beyond our financial and grant programs, with everything from education services to partnerships with the nation’s top transplant centers. Our goal is to ensure that each patient’s transplant journey – from pre-operative preparation to surgical procedure to post-operative care – is as smooth as possible, and not denied or delayed by the inability to pay for care.

As we work collaboratively – especially with our transplant center partners – to ensure quality transplant care is accessible and affordable, we will be here to help bridge the financial gap for more than 4,000 new patients every year. If you or a family member are an organ transplant candidate, we suggest contacting us as early as possible to take advantage of our team’s comprehensive resources and their many years of transplant process knowledge. If you would like to become a financial supporter of National Foundation for Transplants, we invite you to learn why we are the first stop for a second chance for Americans, just like you, who suddenly find themselves in need of a life saving organ transplant.

faces COMBINING METALS AND MUCH, MUCH MORE BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH

J

ewelrymaker and artist Sana Doumet lived and studied around the world before settling in Clearwater about two decades ago. Her fine pieces of hand-hammered silver and gold are sold locally as well as across the country, including a recent show at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The awardwinning artist was born in Lebanon and always has had a passion for arts and culture. The following conversation highlights more of her story. How did your interest in the arts begin? I do come from a family of artists. My mother was an interior decorator and my brother is a painter. I went to college in Lebanon and started as a business major. I was walking on campus and a girl with a big portfolio dropped it on the ground and it opened and I saw all the pictures and the drawings. I asked what she was majoring in and she said the arts. Immediately my heart dropped. Then I decided that’s what I was going to do, major in Fine Arts. It was more difficult to get into the arts than to get into business school. I had to take more exams, government exams. How did you end up graduating from Tufts University near Boston? I had left Lebanon to study in Italy (at Escuela De Bella Arte in Perugia). The civil war in Lebanon got really intense, and I decided to go study in the states at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It was affiliated with Tufts University. I had been more involved with sculpture until I came to the museum. I moved to jewelry because it was a smaller dimension. I could still express myself, but I could take my work back home with me to show what I was working on.

You lived in Ecuador after Boston. How did you end up there? After I graduated, at that time I was married. We had gotten married before we left Lebanon. The situation was so bad we wanted to be married when we left. We decided to go to Ecuador and restart my husband’s family (textiles) business. We were young and excited about the idea of living in Ecuador. The first thing I did when we got there was I set up a studio and I started working. You’ve done so many things by the time you graduate from college. You don’t even know what to do with yourself. Every artist has to say: “Okay, this is what I want to do.” I set up a studio. I started off making more theatrical jewelry — bigger pieces — made of all sorts of materials. Then I switched to metal and I had a show in Ecuador. Most jewelry is either silver or gold. Why do you enjoy mixing them? I think it is because the norm was you do not mix silver and gold. If you do put them next to each other, some of the gold particles will go on the silver and ruin it, and some of the silver particles will go on the gold and ruin it. You were not even supposed to put them in the same box. I was always attracted to doing what other people didn’t want to do. From the very get-go my work was always hammered and I always used the satin finish. Is it physically hard work? I guess after all those years, you learn to space yourself. Back in college I was hammering all day for seven or eight hours. I still work with sheets (of metal) and I still work with wire. Now I pace myself. I hammer, I solder. I do different things so I can switch it up so it doesn’t take as much of a toll on my body.

What brought you to the Tampa Bay area? My sister lived here. We visited and we loved the place. We kept coming every summer for a few weeks. We knew if we stayed in Ecuador eventually our children were going to leave for university in the (United States). We decided it was time to move, and we wanted to come to a familiar place. After living in Ecuador with all the warmth, we didn’t want to go back to the cold.

Aqua earrings, $490. Aqua necklace, $2,700.

How did you develop a following in Florida? When I was in Ecuador I subscribed to art and jewelry magazines. I thought, “I wish I could meet that artist or I wish I could talk to this artist.” When we came back (to the U.S.), the world had changed since I graduated from Tufts. There were more art shows. The first show I went to was the American Craft Council show in Sarasota. The ACC shows rank among the best in the country. I went and I just walked and looked. Oh my gosh, was I intimidated. I went home (to Clearwater), set up a studio and kept working. Then I applied to an ACC show three years later and I got accepted. It was a thrill. Then we started doing all the big shows in the country. I met all those people who I had seen in the magazines when I was in Ecuador. My husband was my biggest supporter. Now we work together. He takes care of the business side of the studio. He is actually making jewelry now. We travel together (and) we go to shows together.

Co-chairs Eve Goelde and Heather Van Nest thank designer Marc Bouwer for making the chic Tampa Museum of Art benefit so successful.

next time COMING DECEMBER 9

THEGIFTSTHAT KEEPONGIVING When the next Bay arrives at your doorstep, the holidays will be in full swing. But take time to pause during the hectic season to see all that Bay has to offer. Instead of the last-minute gifts you grab at the mall, Bay will make suggestions for fabulous and unique trips that can be easily gifted in December and enjoyed months later. Our wonderful stylist, Sandra Davila, will showcase outfits for the parties, family gatherings and New Year’s Eve. She’ll also share her knack for finding the right accessory — be it a bow, broach or handbag — that can take a favorite dress or blouse up another notch (or three) for a big night out. The next Bay will also feature a family that has been celebrating their faith and friendships for more than 50 years. The week of gatherings includes a Bingo night and a beach day that bring almost 100 people from around the country together in St. Petersburg. Mark your crowded calendar for Dec. 9 and make time to savor the season as well as Bay magazine. — Katherine Snow Smith shutterstock.com
