DECEMB ER ISSU E

UNSCRIPTED, INDELIBLE FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN My favorite Christmas present came when I was 8. I awoke that morning to see a train circling the tree and a new Steiff teddy bear with its paw on the transformer — and on its head, a little engineer’s cap my father made out of paper.

46 HOLIDAY ▲ Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, St. Petersburg Mayor-Elect Ken Welch and other local figures reflect on treasured moments and gifts.

20 FASHION ▲ Light up the room with stylish looks that are sure to shine at any celebration.

That very night, our beagle chewed up Teddy’s ears, one paw and the cap. But I still have that bear, and now at Christmas he looks even more adorable in mittens and a hoodie.

Several Christmas Eves later, my husband, myself and two other couples had dinner at a fancy Tampa Bay restaurant. The service was glacial, slowed even more when the waiter knocked over a nearly full bottle of red wine, soaking the pristine white tablecloth. It was nearly midnight when we headed to one couple’s house for a nightcap, only to find that their dog — channeling our long-ago beagle — had torn open all the Christmas presents. We still laugh about that night whenever we get together. Even holiday misadventures that seem calamitous at the time can produce some of the funniest or happiest memories. So if the turkey doesn’t turn out right — or if you don’t have a turkey at all — don’t stress it. Chances are it will be a wonderful Christmas, even if it takes a while to realize it. 6 / bay

12 HOLIDAY ▲ A Christmas village years in the making settles in for the season at 3 Daughters Brewing in St. Petersburg.

32 HOMES After nearly 20 years of work, an Old Northeast gem built in 1924 sparkles once again.

36 TRADITIONS

Then there was the Christmas Eve my mother and I went to Publix to pick up a prepared dinner and were handed a turkey that was frozen solid. The next day, with guests due to arrive in a few hours, we drove up and down U.S. 19 frantically searching for an open restaurant. Other Christmases have faded from memory, but everybody remembers that as the one where the main course was Ya Ya’s Flame Broiled Chicken.

Travel back in time at the Victorian Christmas Stroll at the Henry B. Plant Museum in Tampa.

▲ 40 FOOD Wright’s Gourmet House, a Tampa institution famous for its sandwiches and sweets, is a family affair.

52 SHOPPING From handmade candles to bar carts and peppermint-inspired dishes, enjoy tidings of comfort and joy.

60 TRAVEL Lose yourself in the winter wonderland that is London this time of year.

HOLIDAY

GROWING A VILLAGE BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN • PHOTOS BY BOYZELL HOSEY

I

t started with two tiny houses, one with ghostly figures of Christmas past and present dancing inside. Next came more houses, and stores and trees and trains and teensy skiers and carolers. Eventually an entire

Christmas village, fully lit and animated, took over the garage of Bruce and Pat Harting’s waterfront St. Petersburg home. Neighbors would pause on their nightly walks, transfixed by the wondrous sight. Then eight years ago, the mini metropolis moved — to a brewery started by the Hartings’ son Mike and his wife, Leigh. As 3 Daughters Brewing has grown in renown, so has the size of Mike’s parents’ Christmas display.

Pat and Bruce Harting have a lot of holiday spirit. Their Christmas village has grown so big that eight years ago they relocated it from their waterfront St. Petersburg home to their son’s brewery, 3 Daughters Brewing, also in St. Petersburg. The display runs along two sides of the brewery and stays up through the first week of January. bay / 13

Dave Zitnik, who has a model train store in Pinellas Park, helps with the display’s trains. This year, for the first time, there will be two trains running on the same track.

“You’ve got the North Pole up here,” Bruce Harting says, pointing to an animated Santa’s Mailbox, “and people shopping down here.” In all there are six trains, 341 houses and other pieces (89 of which are animated) and more than 380 people. Each year in October, the Hartings start assembling the display, which now covers several long sheets of plywood and runs along two sides of the brewery in the Warehouse Arts District. It takes until mid-November to finish what has become a popular draw, especially with harried parents who can enjoy a brew or two while their offspring ooh and ahh over the chugging trains, revolving carousels and rising hot air balloons Bruce Harting’s favorite piece remains the Scrooge house with ghosts that his mother gave him in 1986. It was made by Department 56, a Minnesota company known for its ceramic buildings and other holiday decorations. As Department 56 items became increasingly expensive, Harting turned to Lemax products, which are sold at Michaels, and whatever he can get from eBay and other sources. A retired Army lieutenant colonel, he finances the display with what he makes as referee for local soccer teams. Christmas buffs are eager to help. Dave Zitnik, who has a model train store in Pinellas Park, comes every Friday to lend a hand with the trains. This year, for the first time, there will be two trains running on the same track. Another volunteer made a mini replica of the massive brew house. And a friend from St. Louis contributed a little team of Clydesdales hauling a wagon full of beer barrels. “It had Budweiser on the side,” Harting said, “but that doesn’t work so I

14 / bay

painted it and put 3 Daughters on it.” The Christmas village grew even larger this year with the addition of an entire circus. Harting consulted with circus experts on the tiger cages, “human cannonball” and other elements of the Big Top. His wife spent hours gluing down the tiny people, some posed to look like they’re chatting with each other, who sit on bleachers watching the circus parade. Also new is an interactive feature: a big red button that starts the trains. “You can see the kids waiting for them to stop so they can run them again,” Harting said. The couple met at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where she was working and he was visiting a friend who had been seriously wounded in Vietnam and later died — their son is named after the friend. The Hartings also have a daughter, Becky, and five grandchildren — Mike’s three daughters and Becky’s son and daughter. The Christmas village stays up through the first week in January, then most of it is shrink-wrapped and deposited by forklift on the big refrigeration unit at the back of 3 Daughters. The Hartings take home a few sections to work on throughout the year. As for Mike Harting, he likes the business the village brings, but made it clear who is responsible for upkeep. “Dad, I’m not doing it,” he told his father. “I’ve got a brewery to run.” 3 Daughters Brewing, 222 22nd St. S, St. Petersburg, opens at 11:30 a.m. daily. Closing times vary. Check the website at 3dbrewing.com. 727-495-6002.

HOME S

A HOUSE BECOMES A HOME BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN

I

n the early days of their marriage, Donna and Felix Fudge lived in her native Wisconsin. But he thought it was too cold, so they moved to St. Petersburg, where he grew up. When it came time to look for a house, she thought most of the ones they saw were “too pink.’’ She wanted something more traditional. They found what they were after on 14th Avenue N between Fourth and Second streets. Two stories, with purplish brick and a green tile roof, the Georgian Colonial-style house had been built in 1924 by a wealthy New Yorker for use as a winter home. But at the time the Fudges bought it in 1998, the neighborhood was rundown and not yet part of the Historic Old Northeast District that is now among the most upscale areas of Tampa Bay. Figuratively speaking, “it was on the other side of the railroad tracks,” Donna Fudge says. The house itself had good bones but had not been well maintained. The setting for our December fashion shoot, the house has since been restored to its original glory and then some. The Fudges doubled

its size, adding a bedroom, a billiard room, a laundry room and a great room with a fireplace and lofty ceiling. But it was a process that spanned almost two decades, and at one point they moved out for 2 ½ years. Felix Fudge, a real estate broker, was determined that the addition look exactly like the original part of the house. He spent months trying to match brick samples. The glazed terra-cotta roof tiles were no longer made, so he scoured the country for salvaged ones. He also worked in close consultation with city staffers, including Bob Jeffrey of the Development Services Department. Fudge so admired the imposing Doric columns on the front of the house that he wanted to use the same columns all the way around. But Jeffrey told him not to, saying it would “be too much” and look out of place. “He was absolutely right,” Fudge says. He also bowed to advice not to expand a balcony. Almost every object in the house has a story. The gilt horsehair plaster tiles in a den and the great room came from a chapel being demolished on the grounds of a Wisconsin Catholic school Donna Fudge attended. Her father laboriously unscrewed dozens of the tiles, then drove them to St. Petersburg. Much of the woodwork in the den originally was part

of the chapel’s altar. In the kitchen, the stove is flanked by carved wooden cabinets that came from a massive French Hunt Cabinet. A full-length antique mirror in the living room was found in New Orleans in 1940 by Felix Fudge’s mother. Outside by the pool, a metal patio table and swimsuit drying rack once served as radiator covers in the Wisconsin chapel. The house is filled with comfy furniture and family photos, including those of Fudge’s grandfather, who owned a hardware store; his father, a dentist; and the Fudges’ three sons. Tucked in a chest is a scrapbook that Donna Fudge, a lawyer who represents health care providers, keeps with clippings from when she worked her way through college as a model for Kohl’s, Target and other retailers. Although the house is now among the grandest in the Old Northeast, her husband says it still isn’t finished. He would like to enlarge the master bathroom, using bricks and tiles left over from the previous expansion. “I guess we take pride in stepping up and saving the home,” he says. “It is simpler and cheaper to tear down and build up, and certainly way quicker. A passion of Donna and mine is to restore versus tear down.”

Stroll through the ages 36 / bay

BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN n the fall of 1981, Emily Brownhold had just become director of the Henry B. Plant Museum when she was asked what the museum would be doing for Christmas. Surprised there wasn’t already a plan, she said the first thing that came to mind as she considered her surroundings: “Here we are in this historic building and it just popped out of my mouth: ‘What about a candlelight tour?’ It was just that simple.” For that first tour, Brownhold and friend Teri Willis stayed up until 2 a.m. tying lace ribbons around a single, enormous live tree. The museum, part of what was a grand hotel built in 1891, had many rooms but “we did not decorate every room because we didn’t have the manpower,” Brownhold said. “From my perspective, though, this had tremendous potential for a community event, all inclusive, great for outreach and nothing like it at the time.” Forty years later, what is now known as the Victorian Christmas Stroll has grown into a beloved holiday tradition that pre-pandemic drew as many as 50,000 guests a year including schoolchildren. Nearly 20 rooms, hallways and other spaces are lavishly decorated in Victorian style for a tour that runs through December instead of just three days as it did at the start. “It was clear to me that it was important to extend it,” said Cynthia Gandee Zinober, the museum’s director since 1988. “It was very few nights but the effort of installing it was enormous.” Other aspects have changed as well. Candles added a soft glow, “but they were so incredibly dangerous,” Zinober said. A fireplace surround in her office still bears scorch marks from a barely averted disaster. Live trees were the next to go. “One year we had a 15-foot tree and the fire marshal arrived — unexpectedly I might add — because we were blocking one of the exits,” Zinober recalled. “We had to move the whole tree down the hall, dropping ornaments along the way.” Only artificial trees are used now, ranging from 1-inch trees in the dollhouses to 14 ½-foot behemoths that almost reach the tops of the high-ceilinged rooms. And this year, for the first time, one “tree” will be a Victorian-style, wide-skirted dress made out of paper by a Clearwater woman. In the early days of the stroll, before the museum was accredited by the Alliance of American Museums, it relied on local designers to decorate for Christmas. But creative as they might be, they didn’t always adhere to the standards set for handling valuable and historic items. Now the museum closes for a few days in November while Zinober, curator Susan Carter and other museum staffers don jeans and white gloves and start setting up. The trees are hung with hundreds of vintage ornaments, some owned by the museum, others that “we beg and borrow from the public,” Zinober said. Each room has a theme, be it a Victorian child’s playroom or

one adorned with shells, feathers and native plants. This year, one room pays homage to Thomas Edison, a long-ago guest at the Plant Hotel, and another to Babe Ruth, who in 1919 hit his longest home run (587 feet) at nearby Plant Field. A third room shows Dame Nellie Melba — melba toast and peach melba were named for her — luxuriating in a bathtub. Melba, a Victorian-era opera star, purportedly bathed in 52 bottles of Champagne; Tampa’s Mise en Place restaurant donated dozens of empty bottles to fill the tub. A favorite part of the Christmas stroll is trying to spot and count the little mouse ornaments scattered throughout the rooms. (The mice, some wearing glasses or carrying a snowball, are for sale in the gift shop.) Before or after the stroll, guests can enjoy hot apple cider and cookies outside on the broad verandah. “For some kids,” Zinober said, “that is the thing they remember best.” The Henry B. Plant Museum is at 401 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Dec. 23. $16 adults, $15 seniors, $10 youths. Last tickets sold 30 minutes before closing. 813-254-1891. plantmuseum.org.

TAMPA’S WRIGHT’S GOURMET HOUSE SUCCESS IS . . .

all in the family

Jeff Mount bought Wright’s Gourmet House from his grandparents in 1980. Photos by Ivy Ceballo

BY KATHY SAUNDERS

Jeff Mount was still an English major at the University of Florida when he came home to Tampa and told his grandmother he wanted to buy the family business, Wright’s Gourmet House. Mount’s grandmother, Marjorie Coggins, and her husband, Pete Wright, had opened Wright’s as a gourmet shop in 1963. “She knew from the start that she wanted to sell sandwiches,” said Mount of his grandmother. Today, Wright’s sells 200,000 sandwiches a year, along with some 40,000 of its celebrated three-layer cakes.

There’s a part of this business that sees people as instruments but that didn’t work for me because I have learned over time that you can’t run this big of an operation and this complicated of an operation without longtime employees.”

Mount bought the business in 1980 for $100,000, making monthly payments. He also agreed to pay his grandparents $100 each per week — and that’s what kept him focused. “I was responsible for their retirement, I just couldn’t fail,” he said. Through the years, Mount expanded the cafe, bakery and catering company to its current 17,000-square-foot building at 1200 S Dale Mabry Highway. While the business has remained a Tampa institution, Mount said it has evolved, along with its owner. “I started working here when I was 12,” he said. “All I did was make roast beef after roast beef sandwiches. At the end of the day, I knew how to make a roast beef sandwich.” He coaches other employees in the same way, helping to cross-train staffers to handle a variety of responsibilities behind and in front of the customer counters. Employees are key to Wright’s success, Mount maintained. He tried a variety of business models from opening nights and weekends to selling hot meals. But his staff of 50 employees is the backbone of his business. Longtime Wright’s employee Rosa Manzanero decorates one of the holiday cakes. Employees are key to Wright’s success, Mount says.

popular in December. Cookies and brownies are on the menu, along with the favored banana nut bread, a recipe from Grandma Wright, who never wanted to waste bananas. Ann Scott Knight started visiting Wright’s in 1965 when the owners catered her son Peter’s christening party. She is still a regular customer and her grown children stop at Wright’s on the way to her house from the airport when they visit for a Cuban sandwich and a slice of lemon cake. “It has been a long and blessed friendship for me because I can’t think of anything nicer to give or receive than a big platter of Wright’s sandwiches and a big cake,” she said. “No matter the occasion — whether it’s happy or sad — you can depend on Wright’s to help somebody else.”

Baker Byron Viteri, holding a chocolate rum cake, has been at Wright’s Gourmet House for 32 years. Photo by Ivy Ceballo

While she likes their strawberry cakes, Knight has a favorite. “One of the most delicious things that I have ever put in my mouth from there is their pumpkin gingerbread cake, which they make in November and December.” That’s what she will be ordering for her 87th birthday in December.

this big of an operation and this complicated of an operation without longtime employees,” he said.

Originally, Mount wanted to put a Wright’s Gourmet House on every corner in Tampa. But his vision changed as he gained more experience as a business owner. Today, he prefers that Wright’s honor the legacy of his grandparents and his family tree rather than branch out too far.

When the pandemic forced Wright’s to close, Mount kept his workers on the payroll. He continues to offer health care, a retirement plan and Sundays and holidays off. Wright’s is closed on Sundays and major holidays. Byron Viteri, the baker at Wright’s, has been there for 32 years, starting shortly after he arrived in Tampa from Ecuador and before he learned English. Cake decorator Rosa Manzanero has 21 years of seniority at Wright’s. Her favorite cake is the Alpine, a yellow cake with thick chocolate frosting and white chocolate shavings on top. “When we were quarantined he kept us informed and asked for ideas, and he made the process of coming back very safe and comfortable,” staffer Korinna Turner said of her boss. Turner started working at Wright’s several years ago, hired in December, the team’s busiest month of the year.

42 / bay

“This is a hard business,” he said. “You’re only as good as your last sandwich.” Customer Matt Smith was introduced to Wright’s cakes at a New Year’s party 15 years ago when he had just moved to Tampa. Now he visits Wright’s four to six times a week. He enjoys the doubledecker club sandwich and loves the Bahama Baby, a pile of pork, ham, cucumber, bacon, Jarlsberg cheese and mustard sauce on an onion roll. The chocolate, chocolate cake “was the most delicious thing I had ever eaten,” said Smith, a career prosecutor. “The cakes started it for me but they have a large variety and doing it all well is what is important.” Smith knows all of the staff members by their first names and he said his friends fondly refer to Wright’s as “The W.” “Today, customer service is a lost art, but it’s not gone at Wright’s at all. They are like an extended family,” he said.

Mount still honors his grandmother’s husband Pete by continuing to sell sandwiches with his signature mustard sauce, like the Reuben and the double-decker Monte Cristo, both grilled on pumpernickel bread.

Earlier this year, Smith began working for Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody.

For many years, though, the turkey breast sandwich has been the store’s bestseller, followed by the Cuban sandwich.

But, he said, “If they make an ambassador to the world for Wright’s — that would be my ideal job.”

Along with the Alpine cake, Wright’s sells chocolate, carrot, red velvet and other cakes whole or by the slice. Cupcakes are available in the same flavors. Seasonal peppermint chocolate cakes are especially

HOLIDAY

cherished memories We recently asked Tampa Bay luminaries about their fondest holiday recollections. Here’s what they had to say.

46 / bay

RANDY WAYNE WHITE, AUTHOR AND PARTNER IN DOC FORD’S AT THE ST. PETE PIER On Christmas Eve, a buddy and I would pool a sum of cash and fill my truck with wrapped toys. Then, under the cover of darkness, we’d tour the lowincome areas and tiptoe presents to the doorstep where we knew (or guessed) children lived. No tags, no cards, no interaction of any kind. We employed a give-and-run technique that guaranteed anonymity, yet inflated our sense of generosity — even decency — that we certainly didn’t deserve the other 364 days of the year. The best part was the next day, seeing kids outside with new bikes or ball gloves, all having too much fun to care about the phantom Santas driving past.

KEN WELCH, MAYOR-ELECT OF ST. PETERSBURG

JUDY LISI, PRESIDENT AND CEO, DAVID A. STRAZ JR. CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

My favorite Christmas memory is from my childhood. My entire family — my dad and his brothers and sister and their families, three generations of our family — would meet at my grandparents’ home on 18th Street and Seventh Avenue, between the Deuces and the Gas Plant. It was a large two-story, wood-framed home. It was all about family, food and celebrating Christmas.

I was 7 years old. I had wanted a puppy for the longest time, but my mother kept telling me I was not old enough. Well, miracle of miracles … Santa brought me the cutest little beagle puppy who I named Sparky. And I remember thinking that Santa knew more than my mother!

LOU PLASENCIA, CEO OF THE PLASENCIA GROUP HOTEL INDUSTRY CONSULTANTS KATHY FOUNTAIN, FORMER WTVT-CH. 13 ANCHOR, NOW OWNER OF THE FOUNTAIN FERTILITY GROUP When our son Grant was 5, Santa brought him a backyard play set and we managed to keep him away for the entire day it was being assembled. I’ll never forget his face Christmas morning when he exclaimed, “A fort! A swing set!” It was a beautiful moment I will treasure forever.

My best-ever Christmas gift came when I was 6 years old. We had escaped from Cuba a year earlier with only a single change of clothes … nothing more. Certainly, no toys. That Christmas, my father’s friend, Angel Oliva, showed up at our oneroom apartment and presented me with a wrapped Tonka dump truck along with a hearty “Merry Christmas.” It is the one Christmas memory I always treasure and for which I will be forever grateful. It was the best gift ever!

TERRI LIPSEY SCOTT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WOODSON AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM OF FLORIDA My most memorable holiday was Christmas 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Holiday emphasis was limited to the health, safety and welfare of family and friends with limited thought given to the hustle and bustle of purchasing gifts and holiday decor. My family gathered with intentionality — celebrating life, health and each other.

PAUL WILBORN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, THE PALLADIUM THEATER When I was 4, I REALLY wanted a red rocking horse that was hung on springs so a kid could really get going really fast. When it arrived a week or so before Christmas my parents were worried that my legs might not be long enough to reach the “stirrups,” which would result in a horrible, crying Christmas Day. So they made a strategic decision to let me try the rocking horse before Christmas. When they showed it to me, I leapt on and I DID fit the stirrups and rode most of the rest of the day. But the next morning, the rocking horse was gone and I was distraught. But being 4, I was apparently only distraught for a day. By Christmas, when I discovered my magical, bright red bucking bronco sitting next to the Christmas tree, I was sure I was riding it for the very first time. As a kid who planned a career as a “cowboy,” I rode that horse almost every day for the next few years — until, as I recall, my legs got too long for the stirrups! bay / 47

ED MONTANARI, ST. PETERSBURG CITY COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON FRANK HIBBARD, MAYOR OF CLEARWATER It was 1991 and a company I was working for in Washington, D.C., allowed me to relocate back to Tampa just prior to Christmas. It allowed me to be closer to my parents at a time when my father was battling cancer, and I had the opportunity to be with him until he passed in November of 1992.

ANGELINE HOWELL, CEO, GREAT EXPLORATIONS CHILDREN’S MUSEUM Every Christmas the family enjoys eating traditional meals like boliche and yuca. All the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and now our spouses and children partake in games and laughter. Christmastime brings back memories of celebrating traditions as a kid and now bringing those traditions to my own kids, who are 8 and 11. Some of those new traditions are Christmas Eve Mass, hosting a fun and fancy dinner Christmas Eve and sprinkling reindeer food in the front yard!

My favorite Christmas present was a handmade ceramic tile that my daughter Jackie gave me many years ago. She made it at Practically Picasso and included a verse from Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed.” I was moved to tears when I received such a nice and thoughtful gift from my daughter, who captured one of my favorite Bible verses.

EUGENIE BONDURANT, ACTOR, MODEL When I was young, we were allowed to open one gift with our name on it under the tree prior to my parents’ big Christmas Eve party. The entire week, I had my eye on this one present. It was heavy, it had a crazy shake to it, and I was intrigued. Opening the box, my 7-yearold self realized it wasn’t Lite Brite or Mr. Potato Head, it was a frog bean bag — something my dad probably received from one of his customers. Thing is, that bean bag, “Gribbit,” has kept me intrigued all these years. It’s followed me to camp, moves, marriage where it’s been thrown, ripped and stained. It is my special joyous object! 48 / bay

TAMARA LUSH, ROMANCE NOVELIST In the middle of the pandemic last year I had to visit the ER at St. Anthony’s for an unexpected gallbladder situation. I ended up there for four nights. The kindness of the staff was the greatest holiday gift I could receive.

RHEA LAW, INTERIM PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA About a decade ago in preparing for Christmas, I found a box of 8mm film reels. I didn’t know what was on them but they were dated, so I put them in chronological order and had them put on DVDs. It was more than 10 hours of film that highlighted our life from the moment I was brought home from the hospital (I am the oldest child) and included the birth of my sister, all of our trips and important occasions. We were glued to the TV for those 10 hours reminiscing about all the fun we had together as a family. It was a truly memorable Christmas and now each of our family has their own copy of the video history.

E.J. SALCINES, FORMER HILLSBOROUGH STATE ATTORNEY AND RETIRED APPELLATE JUDGE I value the sporting goods that my grandkids have sent me from the University of Oregon — The Ducks. They have sent me T-shirts, a sweatsuit I would wear to exercise, caps, and of course they’ve got the big O for Oregon. People in the coffee shops of West Tampa will see me in the green shirt with the big O on it and it’s “Oh, E.J. has on Our Lady of Perpetual Help” shirt (referring to a former Ybor City school). It’s always a conversation starter.

JANE CASTOR, MAYOR OF TAMPA My favorite Christmas present definitely was a horse, a Shetland pony my father gave me when I was about 9. I remember being in bed Christmas Eve and heard a whinny outside. I ran to my brothers and said, “There’s a horse outside!” They said, “You’re crazy, go to bed.” The next day my dad told me to look outside, and there he was. His name was Fury and he was the meanest s--t who ever lived.

HELEN KERR, MEMBER OF THE LYKES FAMILY IN TAMPA Our mother, Frederica Lykes Thompson, would have the tree delivered to our house after my sisters and I went to bed. She would then stay up most of the night to magnificently decorate it so we would have a delightful surprise on Christmas morning. My second best memory was not of the actual gift, but the elaborate wrapping paper and ribbons that adorned gifts from my grandmother, Genevieve Parkhill Lykes. This year I’ll have fun adding fancy ribbons on the gift to my first great-grandchild, who was born in October. bay / 49

HOLIDAY

ENCHANTED

St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field is transformed into a Christmas wonderland again this year with an ice skating trail, a light maze, gourmet holiday treats from around the world and a “mischievous elf” who will take visitors on a

quest to find eight gifts taken from Santa’s workshop. The dome is darkened to give Enchant Christmas, as the event is known, the ability to create a starry winter night even during daylight. Tickets start at $25 for adults and $20 for kids 2 to 12 with a $3 discount for seniors, military personnel and EMS workers. Days and hours vary, with extended hours on select days. BRITISH BRILLIANCE BY DIANE BAILEY MORTON London teems with tourists during summer, but winter can be a wonderful time to experience the traditions and splendor of one of the world’s greatest cities. Its famous shopping streets are brightly illuminated for Christmas. The windows of Harrods, Selfridges and other department stores are decorated with holiday flair. The food halls and tea rooms, such as those at Fortnum & Mason, envelop the visitor with the sights and smells of a gilded age. Here’s an insider’s guide to getting the best value while enjoying the full enchantment of an English Christmas. Remember: Book early to avoid disappointment.

SOMERSET HOUSE In a scene in the popular 2003 movie Love Actually, skaters glide across an ice rink in the courtyard of Somerset House, a magnificent neoclassical building overlooking the Thames River that is now a working arts center. You, too, can try your spins and jumps there by booking a slot and even taking lessons. For novice skaters, there are penguin figures to hang onto. Moet Chandon sponsors the Skate Lounge, which serves Champagne and cocktails. Night skates with DJs spinning music on rink-side decks make for an unforgettable date night. Dinner is also available at the alpine lodge popup. somersethouse.org.uk. Photo by Kirsty Wigglesworth | Associated Press (2015)

KEW GARDENS ILLUMINATED TRAIL The running joke in England is they don’t have bad weather, you just wore the wrong coat. The right coat will be necessary to visit the outdoor holiday illuminations at the Royal Botanic Gardens, also known as Kew Gardens. With 50,000 living plants, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The sun will be down, so it will be chilly but worth it to experience tunnels of light and flickering flames. Vendors provide hot chocolate and other treats in a “botanical world filled with seasonal cheer.” It runs through Jan. 9. kew.org.

ST MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS St Martin-in-the-Fields, on the corner of Trafalgar Square, is a medieval Anglican Church whose Christmas concerts are among London’s best-kept holiday secret. (The affiliated Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields has a world-renowned chamber orchestra.) The acoustics and ambience make this a magical setting for concerts ranging from classical Christmas music to candlelit carols; concerts that will delight children include “The Snowman” and “Paddington Bear.” Ticket prices start at 20 pounds (about $25), and concerts book up quickly. For the full experience, have lunch or dinner beforehand in the underground Crypt Cafe. stmartin-in-the-fields.org.

LONDON WALKS The best way to immerse oneself in a London topic of interest is to take a two-hour walk with London Walks. Led by experienced guides, many of whom are actors, the group walks are a great deal. If you love the Beatles, do the walk that includes a stroll across Abbey Road. There is a detailed tour of Westminster Abbey. History buffs will love the Tower of London, British Museum and Blitz tours. Holiday walks include a special Sherlock Holmes mystery walk and a Dickens Christmas. If the weather is uncooperative, walks might be inside, including at the National Gallery. Due to COVID-19, many walks are virtual on the walks.com website. Diane Bailey Morton, a St. Petersburg lawyer, is married to a British citizen and frequently visits England. bay / 61

Perfectly themed “Phoenix Rising,” Pavilion XXXV reunited Tampa Museum of Art patrons thrilled to reconnect after a pandemic hiatus and hear firsthand about the $80 million expansion and renovation underway. Gala co-chairpersons Debra Williams and Allison Casper Adams and museum board president Dianne Jacobs honored art collectors-philanthropists Penny and Jeff Vinik, airing a video describing their legendary generosity. Constellation Culinary served the 370 guests on the museum terrace, where Botanica Florist interpreted phoenix wings in bird-ofparadise, heliconia and pin cushion protea encircled in white candlelight. An enormous cascade of the same flowers and pheasant feathers draped a grand piano. The annual event has raised millions of dollars since 1981 for exhibitions and educational programs. — Text and photos by Amy Scherzer
