MARCH ISSU E

ON THE ROAD FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN The late humor columnist Erma Bombeck loved to poke fun at the foibles of growing older. One memorable line: “I wanted to take classes at the community college but I don’t make left-hand turns.’’

24 FOOD

Enjoy adult beverages and delicious bites at rooftop bars high above the Tampa Bay area.

34 RECIPES

Re-create the Limonata, the Tropical Tune and other cocktails from local spots.

I still make left-hand turns. But I also look for alternatives to cautiously creeping out at busy intersections, trying to peer around the monster SUV blocking the view in the opposite turn lane. As Tampa Bay roads become increasingly congested, there have been other changes to my driving routine. When I leave our northeast St. Pete home to go to the mall in Tampa, I generally shun the speedway that is the Howard Frankland and take the quieter Gandy Bridge to West Shore Boulevard, then West Shore north. It adds only a few minutes to the trip and I don’t worry as much about someone roaring up behind me at 90 mph. The ultimate nightmare to avoid is Interstate 4. On a recent visit to the Central Florida town of Mount Dora, my husband and I opted for a more scenic, less crowded route that began with the Suncoast Parkway. We saw hardly any cars on the 30-mile stretch to Brooksville: Until afternoon rush hour, almost all of the traffic is heading south to Tampa. We got off on State Road 50, four-laned much of the way to Groveland. There we took State Road 19, which passes through the pretty lake district, and at Tavares followed the signs to Mount Dora. All in all, a stressless trip and a reminder that sometimes the best roads in Florida are the ones less traveled.

WATERFRONT WONDER BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN

The Rutland-Farley estate extends from Fourth Street S to Little Bayou in St. Petersburg and sits on nearly 4 ½ acres with 400 feet of waterfront. It encompassed 20 acres when it was the home of banker Hubert Rutland Sr., who also owned what was at one time the largest ranch in Manatee County. Photos courtesy of Tony Townsend

An elaborate treehouse at the Rutland-Farley estate overlooks both the pool and Little Bayou.

The listing for the Rutland-Farley estate notes that “the textural variety of the fabrics and other materials in the home add richness and warmth to the classic architecture.”

F

OR DECADES, the name “Rutland” has been big in St. Petersburg. Many

residents opened their first checking accounts at Rutland Bank. They got their shoes and suits at Rutland Department Store. Those vanished with time but

there’s still a Rutland Plaza — and the fabulous Rutland-Farley estate, which is now on the market for $8.5 million.

The casual dining room in the Rutland-Farley estate has a vaulted brick ceiling.

Upper-floor bedrooms are all ensuite with two extra bathrooms for guests.

This is the kitchen in the Rutland-Farley home, which the current owner extensively renovated after it fell into disrepair over the years.

Designed in English Tudor style, the 9,213-square-foot house sits on nearly 4 ½ acres overlooking Little Bayou south of downtown St. Petersburg. It has seven bedrooms, 8 ½ bathrooms, six fireplaces, a gym, a butler’s pantry and an oak-paneled library. On the parklike grounds, shaded by oaks hung with Spanish moss, are an Olympicsize pool, an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, a bocce ball court and a putting green. For boaters, there’s a dock and lift on the bayou, which leads directly into Tampa Bay. The house was originally built in 1918 for $50,000 and sold two years later to a Pennsylvania oil magnate for $100,000. At the time, a newspaper story described it as “one of the finest homes on the west coast of Florida.” Hubert Rutland Sr., head of a banking and ranching empire, acquired it and 20 surrounding acres in 1935. Granddaughter Nancy Rutland, who lived nearby, recalls that the property was so big that it stretched almost a mile along the bayou and even had a riding stable. “There was the water, and horses, and we’d stomp through the woods,” she said. “It was just magical.” As for the house itself, “I thought it was haunted, but I’m sure that was my cousin playing tricks on me.”

The butler’s pantry is an asset during charity galas and other events.

The house remained in the Rutland family into the 1980s, when it again began to churn through owners — a developer who sold off

much of the land; a Canadian con artist convicted of health care schemes; a woman who nearly lost it in bankruptcy; and another woman who tried to convert it into a school without the proper permits. In 2004, entrepreneur Phil Farley paid $2.3 million for the estate — hence the current name. He embarked on an extensive renovation that added modern amenities while preserving the traditional character of the home. With its grand setting, the estate once again has hosted parties, weddings and charity events. “He has been very generous with it,” Nancy Rutland said. “It’s a gracious entertainment house and you cannot get more spectacular grounds.” On the wrought iron gate at the entrance to the house, Farley has posted a plaque with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. It reads: “The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it.” This is the formal dining room.

There’s no better time to enjoy them than now, while Florida’s weather is at its finest. As the classic Drifters song put it, “Right smack dab in the middle of town, I’ve found a paradise that’s trouble proof — up on the roof!” bay / 25

COUPLE USED WEDDING GIFTS TO START MOVING COMPANY

B

ig Man’s Moving Company has been a constant in an ever-changing real estate market. Neighbors move in and out, and BMMC has gained a lot of local traction. How can you miss the eye-catching logo of the Big Man with his curling mustache? We decided to do some research and uncover: Who is the Big Man behind the ‘stache? Standing tall at 6’8”, Josh Anderson is the local giant and entrepreneur of Big Man’s Moving Company. He jokes, “Actually, my wife is the owner, I’m just the mascot!” Brooke Anderson adds, “He calls me the brains, and I call him the brawn.” The unique logo was designed by Josh’s friend, who he met in the military. After 14 years working in a corporate setting, the couple took their future into their own hands.... literally! As an engaged couple, a terrible moving experience with a local, well-known company fueled their vision for starting a detail-oriented, customer-centric, boutique moving company. “They arrived hours late without calling, scratched half our furniture, left a large item behind, and the bill was double the estimate. If this was the best company in the area, we knew we could do better. Hence, the vision for Big Man’s Moving Company was born. When we got married, we decided to pursue our dream of opening a family business, using wedding gifts to partially fund our first 26’ truck!” Intensive training coupled with quality employees has led to the successful completion of over 5,000 local and out-of-state moves in five years, and they’ve now expanded to eight trucks. “We are very thankful for the community support and for their referrals,” says Josh. In fact, readers of the Tampa Bay Times voted

Josh and Brooke Anderson.

Big Man’s Moving Company the #1 Mover in Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021! A customer call to BMMC goes directly to

the owners, not a random call center. Josh and Brooke speak with each client as though they’re family members, offering helpful advice. “What we’ve found is many moving companies grossly underestimate the time it takes to complete a move. However, once the customer commits to doing business, and their items are in the truck, they must pay for the overage. Since Josh frequents many of our moves, his estimates are far more accurate than someone in a call center,” Brooke adds. “Customer service is our number-one priority, and that includes the entire process from the first point of contact to the completion of the move.” Bigmansmoving.com. MOUNT DORA

charms BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN Mount Dora is often called “the New England town of the South,” and it doesn’t take much imagination to see why. This charming, artsy little city just 110 miles from the Tampa Bay area sits amid gentle hills reminiscent of Connecticut. A popular restaurant proudly touts its Maine lobster rolls. And the Victorian mansion near the heart of town could be straight out of old Newport.

A vintage sign hangs outside the train station, which is now Mount Dora’s Chamber of Commerce office. Photo by Susan Taylor Martin

There are plenty of opportunities to sit a spell in Mount Dora’s downtown. Photo courtesy of the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce

On a recent visit to Mount Dora, my husband and I browsed the shops, saw a terrific exhibit, ate too much and enjoyed watching the sunset over Lake Dora from the comfort of Adirondack chairs. It was a pleasant break from the bustle of the bay area. Mount Dora was settled in the mid-1800s by pioneers like William and Dora Ann Drawdy, who traveled from Georgia by raft and horse and wagon to stake a claim on 164 acres in what eventually became the town. After William’s death, Dora often fed and housed surveyors; legend has it that they were so grateful they named the nearby lake after her. The other important name locally is J.P. Donnelly. Originally from Pennsylvania, he married a neighbor when he moved to Florida and they combined their holdings to encompass most of what is now downtown Mount Dora and the lakefront. Donnelly, also called the “father of the tangerine” for his work in the citrus industry, served as the town’s first mayor when Mount Dora incorporated in 1910. He and his wife donated land for churches, parks, a fire department and other community improvements. The couple’s Victorian home still sits in gingerbread

splendor on Donnelly Street, one of the major streets in the compact downtown. We spent two nights at the Lakeside Inn, billed as the oldest continually operating hotel in Florida. Since it opened in 1883 with just 10 rooms, the inn has hosted President Calvin Coolidge, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and other notables. The main building has been expanded, and there are now several other buildings on the lakefront property, all painted a cheerful yellow. We stayed in the 1927 Gables house in a room with vintage glass doorknobs and authentic framed postcards from Mount Dora’s early days. Through the bay windows, we had views of a broad lawn, the swimming pool and the lake, one of many in Central Florida’s beautiful chain of lakes. After checking in, we took a quick stroll through downtown and then headed to cocktail hour at Pisces Rising, a restaurant and outdoor bar overlooking the lake. Mount Dora has an impressive number of restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. There also are enough coffee shops, candy stores and bakeries to keep you satisfyingly stuffed throughout your visit.

over the lake. Then, because we were lucky enough to arrive on the third Thursday of the month, we did Mount Dora’s art walk that evening. Almost a dozen galleries open their doors for the walk, many offering sangria and canapes as you browse. The next morning, we went straight to the town’s Modernism Museum for a first-of-its-kind exhibit: “Space Oddities/Sottsass/Memphis.” In the 1980s, Italian architect Ettore Sottsass started what came to be called the Memphis Group, known for bright, quirky looking furniture and household objects. Late rock icon David Bowie once owned several of the pieces in the exhibit, including a fire-engine red Olivetti typewriter and a pink, red, white and green table with one of its three legs resting on a large ball. The Lakeside Inn opened in 1883 with just 10 rooms. Photo by Susan Taylor Martin

For dinner, we went back to the inn, which itself has three full-service restaurants, including the Veranda on the long front porch. We made a tapas-style meal of fried green tomatoes, baked cranberry Brie and petite beef tenders while watching the sun sink

40 / bay

Open Friday through Sunday, the Modernism Museum has indefinitely extended the popular exhibit. There’s also a gift shop across the street and a restaurant, 1921, with art on loan from the museum. After a lobster roll at Let’s Do, a lunch-only spot on Donnelly Street, we took a two-hour boat tour of Lake Dora and the Dora Canal. Dozens of bass boats

zipped by before we turned into the quieter canal, dug by hand decades ago from what had been a small stream. While some stretches of the canal are lined with decidedly unscenic mobile home parks, others pass through a primordial Florida swamp filled with alligators, herons and ancient cypress trees. Several companies offer the tours; the $32-per-person fare on ours, which starts at the Lakeside Inn, was well worth the price. By late afternoon, the weather had turned cold and windy, so we dined inside at Olive Branch, an Italian-Mediterranean restaurant. Despite the chill, we capped the evening with a walk to Palm Island Park, which has an elevated boardwalk trail along the lake. A side path goes to the old red-and-whitestriped lighthouse that still shines on the lake. Leaving town the next day, we passed what locals call the Starry Night House, a large home painted in the style of van Gogh’s famous work. The owners, whose autistic son loves the van Gogh painting, battled with city officials, who considered the place an eyesore and ordered it repainted. In 2018, the town apologized and the house remained as is — just another of Mount Dora’s many attractions.

BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN

F

or many Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans, it remains one of the greatest plays in team history. During the 2002 NFC championship game in a frigid Philadelphia, Ronde

What are some of the organizations that Copperhead Charities supports? Obviously Habitat for Humanity, it’s one of the biggest ones because Valspar is involved with them in the painting of houses. We support all the First Tees of Tampa Bay. They introduce the game of golf to children and adults who otherwise wouldn’t be introduced to the game.

Barber intercepted an Eagles pass and raced 92 yards for a touchdown. As Times columnist John Romano recently wrote, Barber’s spectacular return not only sent the Bucs to their first Super Bowl (which they won), it “exorcised so many demons

Have you helped build any Habitat houses? I have two girls, and probably four or five years ago we went to a Habitat build and they were like, “It’s hard work, man!” Of the group I was with, I was strong and more agile so I had to get up and hang trusses.

that had haunted Tampa Bay fans for so many years.’’ Barber, a Hall of Fame finalist who holds numerous NFL and team records, retired in 2013 after spending his entire 16-year career with the Bucs. He became a color commentator on radio and TV and with twin brother Tiki, a former New York Giants player, wrote several children’s books. Barber, who lives in Odessa, is also general chairperson of Copperhead Charities, sponsor of this month’s Valspar Championship, a PGA tournament event on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. We recently caught up with Barber. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

You said Copperheads don’t have to be good at golf, just love it. How’s your game? Considering I’m mostly retired, it’s pretty good. I play a lot. I have one of those wives that allows me to get out three or four times a week. With practice comes expertise. While you were doing commentary, did you ever wish you were back down on the field? No, 16 years of playing is enough. I joke all the time with people that I completely ran the wheels off the bus. I was done playing football. Fortunately, I knew exactly what I was going to be able to do. I worked for Fox Sports for seven years and my contract ran out two years ago. It’s been kind of a blessing because this role now has its time and responsibilities. How did you and your brother become authors?

How did you get involved with the tournament and Copperhead Charities? While I was still playing football, tournament director Tracy West invited me to host a couple of events for them during the tourney week. Two years later, the then-general chair of Copperheads, Les Muma, asked if I’d be interested in joining the board. He thought it would be something to benefit them and certainly me, help me stay involved in the community with something I really love, which is golf. That was probably seven years ago going on eight.

Way back when, Tiki and I were both Verizon literacy champions. Tiki was the ambassador in New York and I was the ambassador in Tampa and basically we would encourage young boys to read. Somewhere along the line a publisher from Simon and Schuster, whose son was a fan of Tiki’s, said “you guys’ story would make a good children’s book” and asked if we’d be interested in writing one. We did a picture book that was very successful and then two more picture books and then we aged up and wrote more.

What is Copperhead Charities and how does one join?

That’s pretty impressive.

It’s made up of about 180, 200 businessmen and women, civil servants. You just have to want to be a Copperhead, and handle responsibility. You have to love golf — you don’t have to be good at golf, you just have to want to be around other people that love golf.

Our book, Game Day, won a Christopher Award (honoring media that “affirm the highest values of the human spirit”). One of the coolest things we got to do was that twice we had books chosen by the Bush Family Literacy Foundation as books of the year.

All PGA Tour events are run by (nonprofit) organizations so our goal other than putting on a pretty kick-ass event every year with the best players in the world is to raise dollars for local charities. Over the past 40 years we’ve raised over $46 million or so. Every year we try to give around $2 million, and (in 2021) we were able to give $1.7 million even coming out of the pandemic.

Do people still comment about that 92-yard run in 2002? I would say that every new person that I meet that was of age at that time, if they’re from Tampa that’s the first thing they say. Interesting part is that almost everybody I meet from Philly says something, too.

he Innisbrook Resort in north Pinellas County will be the focus of the golf world this month as the Valspar Championship returns in full force with defending champion Sam Burns and other top-ranked players. The Valspar was the first PGA Tour event canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and operated with limited attendance and activities last year, although it still raised $1.657 million for charities. “We will not have any restrictions, and by every indication the community is ready for a return to the level of community involvement and excitement that marked our tournaments in 2018 and 2019,” tournament director Tracy West said.

The Valspar, televised on NBC Sports and the Golf Channel, runs March 14-20. Guests from other Tampa Bay championship teams will be on hand when the winner is crowned March 20. Activities include a free concert March 19, a tiny home painted in Valspar’s colors of the year and a paintby-numbers mural for fans to finish during the week. Glazer Children’s Museum Cirque de L’Imagination Cirque de L’Imagination delighted Glazer Children’s Museum supporters awed by SkyArt Entertainment’s contortionist, aerialists, stilt walkers and fire jugglers roving throughout beautiful and breezy waterfront Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa on Feb. 4. The 400 guests could try their skills at Lucky Drop, Three Ring Circus and Feats of Strength while enjoying Salt Block Catering’s sushi, skewers and sweets. Lively auction bids rose sky high in an elegant circus tent, including $18,500 for a Super Bowl LVI getaway trip and five Mexico vacation packages for $13,000 each to advance museum programming and exhibitions. — Amy Scherzer A contortionist and other circus performers from SkyArt Entertainment delight the crowd at Cirque de L’Imagination at Curtis Hixon Park. Yo ho, yo ho, the Rotary Club of Tampa partied like philanthropic pirates and civic scalawags at its fifth Gasparilla Bash, downing grog and local brews and dancing to the Bus Stop Band at 81Bay Brewing on Jan. 15. Ticket sales added loads of doubloons to local charities supported by the Rotary Club’s foundation, which will invest $100,000 in grants this year, continuing a commitment that began in 1914. — Amy Scherzer, photos courtesy of See Jarrett Studios
