elcome to the South Shore area! With another year of amazing year of growth in our community, we’re officially the fastest growing area in all of Hillsborough County. If you are new to the area, we encourage you to visit our office and website and see all the wonderful things this area offers. We have so many hidden gems in our community and would love to tell you about them. There’s a little bit of everything here, something for everyone. If you’re thinking of starting a new business or you currently own one and are looking to grow and expand your audience, we invite you to join us at any of our monthly events. Just tell us you’re a brand-new guest, and we’ll take it from there! At the chamber, we pride ourselves on being involved in both business and community events, which we feel are essential to the success of the area. Our various subcommittees cover diversity, education, marketing, military support, economic

development, legislative affairs, leadership and more. Allow me to explain exactly what the SouthShore Chamber does for our community. We represent the business community in South Shore and nearby communities. We stay involved in anything that effects business growth and development in our area. We’re very involved with planning, and we advocate for our members with Hillsborough County government. It’s our responsibility to help businesses increase their visibility to area residents. We’re committed to do everything we can in helping our members succeed. The SouthShore Chamber organizes monthly coffees, luncheons and evening mixers for all members to meet and network with each other. We find that as our members develop trusting relationships with other members, they become much more supportive of each other. Our members enjoy promoting each other any chance they get by working collaboratively on special

projects and hosting various events that draw attention to what their businesses have to offer. We host the largest annual event in all of southern Hillsborough County, the Ruskin Seafood Festival. This event welcomes more than 25,000 people over a two-day period! We also host two other large, annual community events, the Apollo Beach Manatee Festival of the Arts and the Pigs in the Parking Lot BBQ, Beer & Blues Festival. Our members can have a booth, promote their products and services and meet firsthand, thousands of community residents at these three events. Everything we do focuses on making a more unified and strong community. Our chamber is about business, but we go one step further. Our members love to help in the community. They look to us to find out what the biggest “needs” are and how they can help specifically. We connect the needs of our residents and local nonprofits to our business members, and this makes our chamber stand out from others.

The amount of outreach our members show our community each year is amazing. Our theory is, if our community doesn’t thrive, it becomes more difficult to help area businesses thrive. We want to be the community that everyone is proud of to call home. I hope you enjoy this directory. You’ll find lots of information on our annual events, our wonderful subcommittees and most of all, on the incredible members we have. At 400-plus strong, our members are exactly what make South Shore the best place to work, live and play.

The SouthShore Chamber of Commerce merged two historic chambers in 2011, combining Apollo Beach and Ruskin. The Apollo Beach chamber was founded in 1985, originally as an all-volunteer welcome center. The Ruskin chamber dates back to 1928 and was the very first chamber of commerce in southern Hillsborough County. These two communities of SouthShore offer the ideal blend of natural beauty, relaxation and recreation. The area combines both waterfront and rural communities that are fast becoming business destinations as Tampa Bay grows.

Ruskin Seafood Festival Always the 1st weekend in November E.G. Simmons Park 2401 19th Ave. NW Ruskin, FL 33570 813-671-7655

Since its inception in 1989, the Ruskin Seafood Festival has grown from a humble local celebration of scrumptious sea creatures to one of Hillsborough County’s largest and most anticipated events of the year. Another 25,000 people are expected to attend this year’s festival in E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin the first week of November to feast on the area’s best clams, grouper, mullet and seafood chowder from some of Tampa Bay’s best vendors of fresh fish. “I always say it’s up there with the Strawberry Fest and the Florida State Fair,” says Melanie Rimes, SouthShore Chamber of Commerce executive director. “Not quite as big, but the Ruskin Seafood Festival definitely comes right after them in terms of biggest local events.” A lot of the growth spurt over the years is related to how the festival has evolved to offer a broader variety of entertainment and activity options during the two-day event. In addition to arts and crafts, including face painting, and balloon art and a huge kids’ area, there’s a stage for local young dancers and gymnasts to perform. In 2016, Armetta’s Grand Jete Studio of Dance, Victoria’s School of Dance, the Julestarz Academy and the Rowlett Academy for Arts and Communication all staged amazing performances by their students. Another kids’ area highlight last year was the Mini-American Ninja Warrior course offered for free by Jubilee Gymnastics. The festival also puts on a boat and outdoor sports expo, anglers cast lines on the waterfront, and local nonprofits have the opportunity to do outreach to festivalgoers about the work they do serving the community. Perhaps the biggest growth area is the eclectic lineup of bands playing live music all day, each day, on the Clam Jam stage. Last year, Tampa-based La Lucha played an energetic set of Latininfluenced jazz, audience members enjoyed the steel-drum Caribbean sounds of venerable ska/reggae band Spy vs. Spy, and local favorite Kozmic Pearl, a band that frequently plays at Latitudes Apollo in Apollo Beach, played a fun variety of classic rock, dance and R&B.

In loving memory of Steve Fagen - 2017

Many longtime Ruskin Seafood Fest attendees will tell you, however, that the main reason they go is the same as it has always been: the food. Any and all varieties of oysters, fried shrimp, seafood chowder and “mouthwatering crustacean cuisine,” as the organizers call it, can be had at the festival, not to mention Southern cheese grits, fries, funnel cakes and other delectable sides and cold beer. As the organizers say, “Come hungry.” 16 Explore SouthShore

Chamber Events 2017

2nd week in March Hitting a milestone in March, the 25th annual Apollo Beach Manatee Festival of the Arts celebrated artists from all over the world and who work in a variety of mediums, including paint, wood, metal, ceramics, photography, jewelry and mixed media. “It was a record-breaking year, with at least 10,000 people attending,” says Melanie Rimes, executive director of the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce, of the festival. It was a collaborative effort between the chamber, the SouthShore Arts Council and the Firehouse Cultural Center.

Gracing the waterfront in E.G. Simmons Park this year were more than 100 artists, including five international artists who came to exhibit their work, Rimes says. Although many exhibitors hail from Florida, such as well-known local painter Fred Rothenbush (who also bestowed the young artist awards to three local students), the festival also attracted established artists from all over the country, including photographer Kyle Wilson from North Carolina and Wisconsin artist Nicholas Ringelstetter, who won Best in Show for his striking graffiti-style work depicting monsters and ninjas in street scenes on skateboards, stop signs and canvas. The Award of Honor went to New Jersey-based jewelry designer Danielle Merzatta, Zhiyong Ye’s breathtaking watercolor paintings garnered him the Award of Distinction, and taking home the Dean Tea Memorial Award was local watercolor painter Brinley Rairigh, who is just 14. Exposure to a mix of influences, backgrounds and experiences among exhibitors and visitors of the Apollo Beach Manatee Festival of the Arts is part of what makes it special. But local pride is also very much in evidence, with dance performances by local students, a Tampa Bay Martial Arts demonstrations, on the main stage and concerts played by popular local bands, including New Port Richey musician Emily Joy, reggae and funk group Resinated, the Betty Fox Band and Wendy Rich and the Soul Shakers. There are more food and drink options – including beer and wine – every year, Rimes says. The arts and crafts area for kids, called the Children’s Creativity Center, is a large, hands-on area in which kids play and create their own crafts and artwork. Q&A on SouthShore's Chamber E

xecutive director of the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce, Melanie Rimes explains how the chamber helps businesses meet the needs of the community.

The population in SouthShore is increasing consistently. How has the chamber kept up with the evolving needs of the community?

Melanie D. Rimes

Executive Director

SouthShore Chamber of Commerce

The SouthShore area has been growing steadily for nearly 10 years now, which you can see by the number of developments planned and under construction. But the growth has been slow enough that it’s a blessing in disguise - the slower transition has given us time to identify and plan for specific needs of the community that come with such development. The key is keeping the lines of communication open, with frequent meetings and events, so everyone stays on the same page.

In your Diversity Committee mission statement, you say that one of the group’s goals is to encourage and advocate for equality in business practices. Why is that an important part of Chamber of Commerce affairs? Because we are growing so much, our community is very diverse. It only makes sense to reach out to everyone and bring them together. One way we’re trying to do that is by reviewing chamber marketing efforts and event plans to ensure they’re as inclusive as possible.

20 Explore SouthShore

Our “blended holiday” event, for example, was a great year-end celebration of Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Ramadan, with international dishes and coffees and a cultural education aspect. If our community flourishes, our businesses flourish.

How would you say the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce enriches the community in real terms? We work closely with schools and nonprofit organizations in the area, so we’re tuned it to community needs and can share that insight with our members, which is something they tell us they love. They have the desire to give back but don’t always know where the greatest needs are. We can tell them. This kind of mutually beneficial partnership is part of what creates the “small town feel” we have in SouthShore, which I don’t feel will go away as we grow.

On a practical level, what do businesses get out of Chamber of Commerce membership? What advice would you give them for getting involved? Our members have many opportunities to promote their business through our monthly and weekly events with other members, our quarterly events with other business members and residents, and our much larger annual festivals, which attract not only local residents but outsiders coming from other parts of the state.

SouthShore Testimonials “The SouthShore community is like going back in time, when communities really got together to help those in their community. The people in this community are the most caring, loving, giving and dedicated people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. It's a real honor and privilege to be able to work side by side with such awesome people who have the biggest hearts for their fellow citizens! I believe this is what contributes to making this community such a great place to live, work and play!”

Deb Adams, 2017 Chamber President “The SouthShore Chamber of Commerce is a tremendous asset for South County, assisting with economic development, helping to create jobs, promoting ecotourism, and making SouthShore a great place for people to live, work, play and stay. The SouthShore community is uniquely beautiful; a bastion of beaches, boats and businesses.”

SouthShore Chamber's

Educational Partnership Committee

Between 2000 and 2010, the population in Apollo Beach alone almost doubled, and the population of kids under 5 years old increased by more than 150 percent. So it’s unsurprising that one of the areas in which the growth of SouthShore is most evident is in its student population and schools.

to help out teaching kids in a Lennard High School robotics class, and Ruskin Elementary put out a call for mentors and reading tutors.

“SouthShore is the fastest-growing area in the whole county,” says Melanie Rimes, executive director of the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce. “The Educational Partnership Committee now serves 25 area elementary, middle and high schools.”

Some requests are specific, such as the “reading cookie sheet with magnetic letters” Rimes says. Local design companies often have art supplies that teachers need on hand, but sometimes members will just make a trip to Walmart to pick up however many items a teacher has requested. Other donations the committee has contributed include 2,559 educational booklets about the U.S. Constitution.

The number of committee members now totals around 40, although membership ranks are growing consistently. “In the last six or seven years it has just gotten bigger and bigger,” Rimes says. “A lot of retired teachers move to the area, and they come in and offer a lot of insight and knowledge. It’s amazing what you can accomplish just connecting people; it’s great the way it works out.”

“One of our local computer companies donated 150 thumb drives recently,” Rimes says.

The Educational Partnership Committee is also involved with area nonprofits; the committee recently delivered new pillows to the Hillsborough County AMIkids, a national nonprofit serving at-risk youth as well as sponsoring the Migrant Student Graduate Banquet (10th annual this year).

The committee hosts evening mixers and an annual welcome breakfast for all teachers new to the area. After the breakfast, educators receive a goody bag filled with supplies and gifts, such as Target gift cards, raffle tickets and free passes for local services. But the committee’s primary focus is wish fulfillment for local teachers and schools. The Educational Partnership Committee meets monthly at a different SouthShore school, Rimes says. Teachers and administrators are welcome to join the meetings whether they’re committee members or not. Teachers and faculty discuss their needs, which the committee communicates to chamber members so they can learn how to help. Led by chairwoman Carrie Elwell, the committee has fulfilled countless requests from educators, providing needed classroom supplies and helping to fund field trips (such as paying for buses to transport the kids or help students attend who might not otherwise be able to swing a trip financially) and matching locals’ expertise with corresponding educational needs. Recently, educators requested a welding expert in the community

With the way awareness about the committee is growing in the community, Rimes says that teachers are likely to get what they need to help them make an impact on their students, and all they have to do is ask. “This committee lets teachers know that we want to support them,” Rimes says. “Just write us a request and put down how many kids it’ll impact and submit it.” Teaching kids about taxes or finance, for example? The partnership has bankers and accountants who would love to schedule a class visit and help, Rimes says. “We have so many members who want to help but they don’t know how.” she continues. Pairing them with people in the education field who know what kids and teachers need, she says, is proving to be a win-win for everyone.

The Educational Partnership Committee meets once a month. Call the chamber at 813-645-1366 for more information. 22 Explore SouthShore

SouthShore Chamber's

Diversity Committee

Diversity Committee advocates for inclusive business community Southern Hillsborough County’s continued growth over the past decade means the area’s demographics are changing. Embracing those changes, the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce believes, is fundamental for the growth and sustainability of its member businesses. So, three years ago, the chamber established its Diversity Committee. The committee’s goal is to help chamber members promote equality in their business practices, which helps to strengthen their businesses and improve their economic growth, says committee chair Joey Henderson. The committee was borne from the chamber’s former Hispanic Affairs Committee, which reflected the area’s large Hispanic population. It now focuses on the many different communities living in the SouthShore area. “Over the years the community has changed and the focus of our committee has also changed in terms of diversity,” says Henderson. “We try to be more universal in our reach, as far as race, as far as gender, and even various challenges with mental health and physical health.”

The committee encourages member organizations to create inclusive workplaces by utilizing the skills and perspectives of a robust, diverse workforce. It also guides members in how to best meet the needs of a diverse clientele, including those with different abilities and physical challenges, says Henderson.

The group also helps host annual events that reflect the many cultures that make up SouthShore’s vibrant community, including the Migrant Student Graduation Banquet, a celebration honoring the children of local migrant farm workers who graduate from local high schools. “Migrant farmers tend to move around a lot from one farm to another to work. So it’s an amazing task for a child of migrant farmers to be able to graduate high school and we recognize that,” says Henderson. “We recognize their struggle and we try to encourage them to continue forward.” The chamber also hosts a Blended Holiday event for its members each December. The year-end celebration honors Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Ramadan and features international dishes and other cultural offerings. The bottom line, says Henderson, is that being sensitive to the needs of all members of the community is smart business practice. “We’re really trying to help our business owners understand that when it comes to diversity, when it comes to color, the main color that matters is green,” he quips. “We want our members to understand they will flourish if they serve everyone fairly. We want their businesses to grow in the best possible way.”

The Diversity Committee meets once a month. Call the chamber at 813-645-1366 for more information.

The committee provides members with information about diversity training opportunities for employee groups, and has brought in guest speakers, including a member of the Hillsborough County Diversity Advisory Council, to “give us some insight in regard to what our businesses and business owners could expect when dealing with diversity,” says Henderson.

SouthShore Chamber's Although it’s less than a year old, the newly minted Military Affairs Committee of the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce has been charging full steam ahead in its efforts to support current and former members of the military and their families in the community as well as to honor fallen servicemen and women.

“They have made amazing progress in a short period of time,” says Melanie Rimes, executive director of the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce. Led by chairwoman Nadya DePontbriand, committee members include current and former military personnel and representatives from local businesses, such as H&R Block SouthShore, CrossFit Apogee and nonprofit My Warrior’s Place, a retreat center for veterans, military service members, first responders and Blue Star, Silver Star and Gold Star families. With SouthShore’s large military population and MacDill Air Force Base so close, the Military Affairs Committee fills a crucial void, supporting military families and connecting them with local business leaders who want to help. Part of the committee’s focus is outreach to the families of deployed service members, such as hooking them up with discounts for products and services and other resources, Rimes says. The committee has organized two military supply drives during which children from Kids ‘R’ Kids wrote 100 letters to soldiers overseas. Both events were great successes, collecting items such as eye drops, soap, sunscreen lip balm and soup packets for deployed soldiers. In addition to outreach, education is another key focus of the committee. Recently approved by the Hillsborough County School Board is the Military Affairs Committee proposal to standardize student instruction regarding the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The program includes Ruskin Gold Star mom Kelly Kowall’s videos about the importance of and differences between Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day, Rimes says. “You don’t thank veterans for their service on Memorial Day and you don’t say Happy Memorial Day,” she explains, offering an example of what kids will learn from the program. “Veterans deal with survivors guilt already and that needs to be understood.” It’s important to educate students and teachers about things like that.” Previously, many teachers didn’t have discussions in the classrooms on 9/11 about the significance of that day, while others did. Some did a lot to remember that day and some did nothing. The Military Affairs Committee was passionate about establishing a consistent curriculum, 24

Military Affairs Committee including remembrance assemblies and the facts about the events of 9/11, and the school board was extremely open and receptive to their proposal, Rimes says. “Together, we launched a pilot program for all 25 of the Area 8 schools for this year and hopefully in the years to come, the entire district will follow” she says. Rimes is also enthusiastic about the committee’s first official action as an official chamber committee: the program to award challenge coins to area military members who deserve special recognition. The first coin was presented to local artist and veteran Fred Rothenbush, who paints portraits and battlefield scenes on commission for fellow servicemen and servicewomen and also frequently donates to militaryrelated organizations. “They’re awards for significant accomplishments and a big deal in the military,” Rimes says. “It’s an honor to get them.” The Military Affairs Committee also counts the float it builds for the annual Ruskin Memorial VFW Post 6287 Veterans Day Parade as one of its most important efforts. Every year, thousands of attendees of all ages gather along U.S. 41 to watch veterans’ organizations, current and former members of the military, kids in school JROTC programs and others who want to honor everyone who has served this country. Last year, the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce won the America Tribute Award for its work supporting the parade. “It’s a huge event and my fav day of the year, IN RUSKIN!,” Rimes says. SouthShore Chamber's

Emerging Leaders

Leaders of SouthShore aim to impact the community. The Emerging Leaders of SouthShore is a committee focused on providing leadership and influence to the members and businesses in the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce. “We want to help anybody in our Chamber – new businesses, existing businesses, businesses that have been open for 50 years – to hone their leadership skills and become the best leaders they can be so that we can best service our businesses, our families and our communities,” says committee member Amy Modglin. Modglin, who owns her own leadership business called Modglin Leadership Solutions, says the committee’s work excites her because she sees firsthand what happens when you spend time and energy working with people to maximize their potential.

group’s mission is to help the chamber’s other committees stay focused and meet their goals. “We hope that the Emerging Leaders Committee can step in where needed to help provide some leadership oversight, to make sure we’re doing the right projects at the right time with the right people,” says Modglin. Modglin says she knows how effective leadership training can be, and has big hopes for the committee’s impact. But, she says, she’s hardly alone in her enthusiasm. “We have a lot of fantastic, passionate, giving people with servant hearts who have a lot to offer.” Says Modglin, “It’s all about the right person, at the right time, with the right need.”

“If you’re part of a group or an organization, your people are your best asset,” says Modglin, who calls herself a “people investor.” Giving individuals the chance to grow and stretch helps their organizations and communities grow, too. The committee was founded a year and a half ago to help the chamber’s younger businesspeople develop leadership skills, but recently restructured its mission to be inclusive of members of all ages.

The group plans to tap into the chamber’s own resource pool first. “We want to make sure that we utilize the resources right at our fingertips and right in our chamber because we have people who are experts at the various parts of running a business,” says Modglin. The committee believes in “starting from within (the chamber) so we can have a greater impact all around us,” she says. A big part of the

Those are the kinds of stops I love, when people think, ‘That’s odd’ initially, but then they come out and are so surprised by how much they learned. Chamber of Commerce members pay just $50 to be a tour stop and tourists pay $25 for the tour. Tourists visit approximately 10 area businesses and nonprofits, including a local restaurant for lunch. Plus, breakfast and a ton of snacks are provided, Rimes notes. 26 Explore SouthShore

The biggest challenge for businesses is simply getting people in the door, Rimes says. Because these tours guarantee consumer contact for their portion of the tour, they’re great for business as well as a great opportunity to shine a light on what they want to highlight about their business or work, Rimes says.

“They can shape what they want us to walk away with, she says. “And some people get really creative with it, which is

great. A boat company took tourists out on a boat for a ride. In addition to surprise adventure excursions, the tours often offer more subtle but substantial insights about the community and what it has to offer. “Even if you’ve been to a place 100 times, like a bank, you can learn so many cool things when a business owner talks to them for 15 minutes about what makes them stand out, says Rimes.

Tourgoers hop on a bus at the Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of SouthShore not knowing the day’s schedule, because the mystery is part of the fun, says Rimes. Past stops during the holiday season have been organized to highlight local shopping options, and nonprofits have the opportunity to tell tourists about what they’re doing to give back to the community during the holidays. Other trips have included hardhat tours of a waste management facility, a visit to an animal shelter and a trip to the circus museum, Tthe International Independent Showmen’s Museum in Riverview, near Gibsonton.

“There was so much interest that we decided to do one once a quarter, Chamber of Commerce executive director Melanie Rimes says. “We used to fill one bus, but now we have people following in their cars when it’s full.

Backstage tours offer a glimpse into what makes a production special, which is the idea behind the Tour de SouthShore, the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce’s popular “field trips for adults that peel back the curtains of area businesses for locals.
