Cancer is more than just one disease When someone hears the word cancer, they more often think of solid tumor cancers, such as breast and lung cancer. However, one of the more rare cancers, affecting only around 10 percent of those estimated to be diagnosed this year[i], are cancers of the blood. For some, their disease may not show symptoms. However, signs associated with these cancers range from fatigue and weight loss to enlarged lymph nodes and infections of various organs. There are four known types of blood cancer; they can affect the bone marrow, blood cells, lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system. They include Hodgkin’s and nonHodgkin’s lymphoma; myeloma; and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The most common type of adult leukemia in the United States is chronic lymphocytic leukemia or CLL.[ii] Although it is often a slowgrowing blood cancer, CLL can be a complicated disease, and many patients and their families may find themselves overwhelmed with the diagnosis and not sure where to begin. While researchers have not yet identified the actual cause of CLL, what they do know is that certain white blood cells, called B-cells, become damaged in patients with this disease. These damaged cells throw the body’s systems out of balance, causing cancer to develop. These cancerous cells go into the blood, where they build up slowly over time, and eventually may also spread to other parts of the body, like the lymph nodes, liver and spleen.[iii]
“A blood cancer diagnosis, such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia, can be overwhelming for patients and their families. You may feel anxious and afraid, unsure of where to turn,” said Stephanie A. Gregory M.D., Elodia Kehm chair of hematology – emeritus and professor of medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “There are a number of tools and communities with free resources and support information to help you take control of your health and your care choices, and empower you to confidently approach your treatment.” Patient resources can offer support in a variety of ways: • Understanding a cancer diagnosis • Communicating effectively with your health care team • Discovering what treatment options may work for you • Navigating the ins and outs of insurance and financial assistance • Coping with your disease
It’s important to talk with your health care team to understand and decide what’s best for you. “Don’t be afraid to ask for and seek out additional help,” Dr. Gregory added. “Remember, we’re in this together.” [i] Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Easy Tips for Smart Snacking It’s hard to remember when the norm was three square meals a day, and snacks were relegated to nibbles at parties or as an after-school bite to eat for kids. Today, whether enjoyed by young or old, snacks are a big part of our regular eating habits. In fact, a whopping 92 percent of us snack sometime during the day or evening, according to research by the Hartman Group. Even more surprising? We’re no longer using snacks just once or twice a day to quell hunger between meals. Snacks have moved into meal territory, and now make up half of all our eating occasions. When it comes to smart snacking, the foods you choose – and how much you eat – matters. One of your best bets? Fruit! Just 13 percent of Americans eat the 1(1/2) to 2 cups of fruit recommended each day, and snacks offer an opportunity to close that gap. For the perfect pick, think fresh grapes. At just 90 calories per (3/4) cup serving, their delicious, juicy taste hits the snacking sweet spot. Heart-healthy and hydrating, they’re a nutrition bargain compared to many processed snacks high in calories, fat and added sugar that tend to offer little health bang for the buck. Plus, grapes are portable – ideal for munching anytime, anywhere. With grapes, there’s no fuss, no muss – and no peeling or coring required. Whether added to the lunch sack to help end the midday meal on a sweet note, or tucked in the briefcase or backpack at the ready for when hunger strikes, grapes are a super snack. If late-night noshing is your nemesis, go with grapes for a tasty, healthy and guilt-free option. And if the ice cream carton starts calling your name, opt for frozen grapes instead – they’re just like a mini-sorbet. Simply rinse grapes and pat them dry, then place them on a sheet pan and pop them into the freezer for two hours. Store any extras in the freezer to keep them at the ready for your next snack attack. Fresh grapes are a delicious addition to heartier snack fare, too, adding color, crunch and a light touch of sweetness: • Make a fresh trail mix by combining grapes with cubes of cheese and a sprinkle of chocolate chips and nuts. • Toss grapes into your favorite smoothie recipe. • Spread celery stalks with peanut butter and place grapes on top for a mix of crunchiness and sweetness.
• Put together snack sandwiches: Smear a dab of cream cheese on top of graham crackers and top with halved grapes. If game day requires a more adult-style snack – perhaps perfectly paired with a beer or glass of wine – try this scrumptious flatbread. You’ll love the combination of saltiness from the cheese and prosciutto balanced by the light sweetness of the grapes.
Prosciutto, Red Grape and Pecorino Flatbread Serves 8 as an appetizer
Ingredients: 4 prepared 8-inch naan breads 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (divided) 3/4 cup grated Pecorino Romano (divided) 1/2 tsp. finely grated lemon zest 1/4 lb. thinly sliced prosciutto 1 cup red grapes, halved 1 cup arugula for garnish (optional) Directions: Heat the oven to 500 degrees F. Brush the naan breads with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and place on sheet pans. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of the pecorino and the lemon zest, then drape the prosciutto over the top. Add the grapes, then sprinkle with the remaining pecorino. Bake until grapes blister, about 10 minutes. Drizzle with the remaining olive oil, cut into wedges and serve. Nutritional analysis per appetizer serving: Calories 250; Protein 12.5 g; Carbohydrates 26 g; Fat 10 g (36 percent calories from fat); Sat. Fat 3.3 g (13 percent calories from saturated fat); Cholesterol 23 mg; Sodium 700 mg; Fiber 1g.

Eight Reasons to Put a Hearing Test at the Top of Your ‘To Do’ List No matter what your age, untreated hearing loss can take its toll. The catch is, hearing loss is stealthy. It’s usually hard to notice at first. In fact, it tends to come on so gradually that it tricks you into oblivion. Then it robs you of more than you realize, sooner than you realize. It’s a noisy world. You’re part of it. And the numbers show that hearing loss is becoming more common among younger adults in their 20s and 30s. So make sure you value your hearing. It’s a treasure worth keeping.
Here are eight reasons you should get a hearing test today: 1. It may help your pocketbook. Research shows that middle-aged people with hearing loss have about a third more in health care payments than those without hearing loss. A study by the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) shows that using hearing aids reduces the risk of income loss by 90 to 100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77 percent for those with severe to moderate hearing loss. People with untreated hearing loss lost as much as $30,000 in income annually, the study found. 2. Your mind may benefit. Research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia, leading experts to believe that interventions, like hearing aids, could potentially delay or prevent dementia. 3. It could boost your job performance. Most hearing aid users in the workforce say it has helped their performance on the job. 4. Life’s challenges may not seem so intimidating. Research shows people with hearing loss who use hearing aids are more likely to tackle problems actively. 5. Your zest for life might get zestier. Most people who use hearing aids say it has a positive effect on their relationships. They’re more likely to have a strong social
network, be optimistic, feel engaged in life, and even get more pleasure in doing things. 6. It could protect you against the blues. Hearing loss is linked to a greater risk of depression in adults, especially 18to 69-year-olds. But studies also show that treating hearing loss can boost quality of life. 7. You’ll probably be more likely to get the drift. Most people who use hearing aids say it helps their overall ability to communicate effectively in most situations. The majority who bought their hearing aids within the past five years say they’re pleased with their ability to hear in the workplace, at home with family members and in conversations. 8. Your heart and health may benefit. Cardiovascular and hearing health are linked. Some experts say the inner ear is so sensitive to blood flow that it’s possible that abnormalities in the cardiovascular system could be noted here earlier than in other less-sensitive parts of the body. Hearing loss may signal or exacerbate other health conditions, as well, including depression, sleep apnea, cognitive decline, and the risk of falling and hospitalization. So do it for your health. Do it for your happiness. Get a hearing test.

A Four-Point Plan For Joint Health Whether it’s a brand-new BMW or a classic Mustang, most people have a car they dream about. If they’re lucky enough to own it someday, you better believe they’re going to take care of it. Regular maintenance is an essential part of keeping a vehicle in tip-top shape. The same is true of the human body, particularly the joints. “Prevention is the only thing that actually prolongs the health of your joints, similar to the care of a machine,” said Matt Johnson, health and performance expert and president of On Target Living. “If you want something to last as long as possible, and to cost as little as possible over the long run, you have to do maintenance, perform checkups and change the oil. Taking care of your body is no different. If you do, your joints can last until you’re 80, 90 or even 100 without tendon or ligament issues.” Johnson notes that joint issues are some of the most common concerns he sees in his practice. These issues can happen at any age, although many start to manifest between the ages of 40 and 50, after years of wear and tear cause pain and inflammation. “The best age is always now,” says Johnson. “Start as soon as possible and think about it like you take care of a car or nice jewelry. Joints are meant to last as long as you live. The key is to take care of them with quality nutrition, normal exercise and adequate rest.”
Johnson’s mantra: If you take care of the body, it will take care of you. To help people of any age maintain joint health, he provides this four-point joint maintenance plan.
1. Rest
The first part of healing the joints is to rest the joints. Massage, meditation, light yoga, stretching and cool baths are great ways to rest the joints. Additionally, quality sleep each night is essential. (Quick tip: Take an epsom salts bath once a week.)
2. Healing Nutrients
Studies show that omega-3 fats can help support joint health by limiting inflammation after exercise and boosting hormones that help the body heal.
3. Superfoods
Superfood herbs and spices help the body get maximum nutrients in minimal amounts. For example, curcumin and bromelain are both great for helping joint pain and repair. Remember, limited processing of the product is ideal for optimal absorption.
4. Exercise and body alignment
You can’t have optimal joint function if the body is out of alignment. There are five key joint checkpoints: ankle, knee, hip, shoulder and neck. This is where you start to achieve perfect posture, after which you can focus on strengthening the large muscles.
