Held just once a year, those shopping for a new home in Hillsborough, Pasco or Pinellas counties have a unique shopping format in the Tampa Bay Parade of Homes, which opened March 2 and runs today and next weekend, March 9-11. Hosted by the Tampa Bay Builders Association, the free event features 35 builders and 95 production and custom model homes spread out over three counties. The showcase is outlined and mapped on the parade website at tampabayparadeofhomes.com. Numerous communities are participating, with four showcase
communities: Connerton, Estancia, Starkey Ranch and Triple Creek. “We tend to forget just how lucky we are to live amongst world-class communities offering the highest-quality amenities rivaling any market,” said Brian Bullock, 2018 Parade of Homes chairperson. Most homes in the parade range from below $200,000 to just south of $1 million. To meet 2018 tastes, low-maintenance materials and systems, granite countertops, smart-home features and threecar garages are prevalent, as is a special emphasis on outdoor living spaces. A good number of the models are along the S.R. 54 corridor in southern Pasco County, one of the hottest housing growth areas in the region, said Jennifer Motsinger, executive vice president of the Builders Association. The housing market is stronger than last year,
and while that may seem like a red flag for buyers that it’s a seller’s market, Motsinger said builders are bargaining and offering incentives on homes during the parade. “With special incentives, interest rates that are still low and a market that’s getting better, it’s a good time to buy,” she said. Most buyers are millennials cashing in the equity in their current homes and upgrading to something “larger and nicer,” Motsinger said. Despite what housing experts predicted during the crash a decade ago, when the market rebounded, buyers were not looking to downsize and simplify. It’s just the opposite, she said. “They’re moving up to new construction and bigger homes (rarely less than 2,500 square feet) to meet their needs,” said Motsinger. “For folks that are in the market, the parade is the easiest way” to find that perfect home.
The F Street Homes Faro Blanco is located in Longleaf in Trinity, and is a 3/2.5/2 with 1,445 square feet of living space, a Jack & Jill bathroom, 10-foot-tall ceilings and crown molding on both floors. The base model price starts at $255,900.

Yes! Cut that back (if you haven’t already) Tips for our first post-freeze spring in 8 years
BY PENNY CARNATHAN Diggin’ Florida Dirt
To cut or not to cut? Last month, that was the question. Our first freezes in eight years took many by surprise and the results horrified some. Hate me for saying this, but it’s just what I prayed for. The question on everyone’s lips: “Can I cut back the brown stuff now?” I gave them the answer approved by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences: Wait until March 15 when all chance of frost or freeze has passed. If the plant’s still alive (and many are!) whacking back too early removes insulation and can trigger new growth, both of which make the plant vulnerable should we get a late winter freeze. And we do! Another reason to wait? With time, your woody plants will show you just how far to cut as they sprout new growth.
All excellent advice. Did I heed it? Heck no! Neither did Joe Parr, who put the “gardens” in Busch Gardens Tampa Bay as horticuture director for 25 years. At his home in Temple Terrace a couple weeks ago, he was busy. “I’m out there cutting back,” he said. “But I’ll do the tropicals last. I’m leaving the brown on my beautiful purple glory tree (Tibouchina granulosa) ... and the Manila palms” (Veitchia merrillii) aka Christmas palm. Like Joe, I was selective. I ripped out a wall of brown black-eyed Susan vine (Thenbergia alata) because I know her. She’ll be back. Same with the porterweed (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis). But the tropical angel trumpet trees? The crotons? I’m waiting for them to talk to me. If you’ve been sitting on your pruners, rejoice! March 6, we’re good to go, says Joe, who monitors past freeze dates and extended forecasts to predict when it’s safe to do serious hacking. As I fill my yard waste bins, I’m grateful Mother Nature finally gave our landscapes a good slap. She killed a lot of weeds, sternly dis-
ciplined some spoiled plants, and gave me room to try new ones. How to move forward? First, don’t despair. After several consecutive nights of deep freezes in January 2010, I thought I’d lost it all. But most of my plants came back, many from the roots. If you’ve lost some favorites, hey, we have great plant
festivals this month and next. Get out there and find new loves! Some tips for heading into our Florida spring: Leaves produce food for plants through photosynthesis, so can a plant with no leaves feed itself? Yes, says Joe. If you can save some leaves, great, but don’t fret if you
In March, watch for newly hatched Eastern lubber grasshoppers. They may be all black, or have yellow or orange stripes. These pests have just one known natural predator and a voracious appetite for all plants. If you spot nymphs, kill them by hand or heel and get non-toxic Nolo bait.
A Muscovy duck waddles through a bed of crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) that have been cut back to remove frost and freeze damage. The popular bedding plants are tropicals that hail from India and Malaysia. Most will come back after a freeze.
can’t. Except palms. Keep all fronds that still have some green. If you moved here in recent years, you may think we never freeze. “You see people planting all these things that are really tropical. Watch what you plant. Just because you see it out there doesn’t mean it’s hardy here.” Tropicals fare better along the coast and south of Tampa. Is climate change to blame for the change in weather? Way too early to tell, says Joe. He’s observed 20-year cycles in Florida of warm vs. cold winters. “I am going to watch to see if this is the start of a new cold cycle,” he says. “It could be a hiccup.” Other items on Joe’s spring cleanup checklist: He’s fertilizing with Nutricote, a granular slow-release brand he prefers because it releases nutrients only when it gets wet. He’s also amending his soil with cow manure compost and oak leaf mulch. “If you’ve got a dollar, spend 50 to 75 cents on the soil,” he says. Joe hasn’t had a problem with
Eastern lubber grasshoppers, but I have, so here’s my tip: Now’s the time to watch for newly hatched lubbers. They look like little crickets and are often swarmed on plants. They grow into enormous, armor-covered grasshoppers that will eat everything in your garden. Kill ’em! The best long-term solution I’ve found is non-toxic Nolo bait. It’s available online or locally at Shell’s Feed & Garden Supply (shellsfeed .com). If you loved Joe’s surprising garden displays at Busch Gardens, you’ll be happy to learn he has a fun new book coming out and is doing landscape consulting. Curb appeal & garden Timely Tendings | Edibles in the Landscape Vegetable gardening should be in full swing this month. Remember to keep a watch for insects and diseases and be prepared to act at the first sign of invasion. Vegetables are annual plants that require a lot of fertilizer while growing, and vegetable gardens are exempt from the Pinellas County fertilizer ordinance. Keep side-dressing 2 or 3 times each growing season. There is still time to plant pole beans, lima beans, cantaloupes, collards, okra, sweet potatoes, and summer squash. This is also a great time to plant herbs. Some herbs in Florida are annuals and others are perennial so be sure to locate them appropriately. You don’t want to plant perennial herbs in the middle of a vegetable garden where you will need to rotate crops and change plans from one season to the
next. For more information on herbs including which herbs grow best in Florida see http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/VH/ VH02000.pdf. ALWAYS remove suckers below the bud or graft union on citrus, avocados, mangos, or any other grafted plant. These shoots will grow fast and rob needed strength from the desirable upper portion of the plant and will not produce the desired flowers or fruit.
