Who We Are and Why This Resource Guide By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging

This is the second year our all-volunteer group within the SouthShore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging has published this community resource guide. Last year’s edition was so well received we’ve decided to make it an annual publication, mainly because so many resources change from year to year and so many new ones come into being to help people or groups find what they need. Just take a look at our grid starting on Page 4 and you’ll see the names of those nonprofit organizations that provide service(s) to South Hillsborough (mainly everything we could find from the Alafia River to the Manatee County line). From the grid — which tells you what each organization provides — you can look up the organizations that would be most useful to you in the Categories section, starting on Page 18. The coalition itself is composed of organizations and volunteer groups whose work — their whole reason for being — is to provide help for people who need it: those whose lives or well-being, for any number of health issues, is troubled. Whether you’re dealing with hunger, dementia or Alzheimer’s, or a deeply troubled child, this community resource guide provides the contacts you may need. The coalition is grateful to its president, Debbie Caneen, who has led to producing this guide, and, in particular, to Karen Fredricks, president of the National Alliance On Mental Illness-Hillsborough FL. Diane Tottrup orchestrated the computer programming. Bob Black led the editorial team with Karen Ryan as an invaluable editor, and

Debbie Caneen President

SouthShore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging four volunteers – Morgan Kirsch, Whitney Blankenship, Pauline Charles-Malcomb and Rae Gavison – master’s and doctoral students from Gannon University, gathered and cataloged the contents. The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay provided invaluable funding to ensure those in need in our area would have resources offered by local organizations at their fingertips. You’ll find that neighbor helping neighbor is a recurring theme throughout this guide. We’re all volunteers, and giving our time provides a benefit to those who need assistance and, truly, to ourselves. The Men's Club of Sun City Center along with the Woman's Club have provided needed funding and continue to support collaborative efforts in our community. The Tampa Bay Times has been an invaluable partner in bringing this guide to completion and deserve our thanks. Finally, if you can find anything we have missed or that needs changing or updating, please let us know. Send an email to office@mentalhealthandaging.org and we’ll fix it in the next edition.

Trying to Make Mental Health First Aid As Familiar As CPR By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging, and Lenny Bernstein, Washington Post If someone suddenly collapsed and appeared to be having a heart attack, you wouldn’t just walk on by, right? You’d at least call 911. You’d likely stay with the person while the ambulance was coming. And if you were trained, you might even start CPR. Chances are that human decency would motivate you to do something. So why is it that when we see obvious signs of mental or emotional crisis in a friend, colleague or even a casual acquaintance, our first reaction is to withdraw? We typically consider behavioral health issues too personal for our intervention, out of bounds for anyone but a family member or a very close friend. That pretty much defines the challenge facing the National Council for Behavioral Health, which has announced it will train another 500,000 people in its Mental Health First Aid Course. The goal of the eight-hour session is to help people recognize when someone is suffering from a mental health or substance abuse disorder and to encourage intervention. “The truth of the matter is that you are more likely to encounter someone who is experiencing a behavioral health condition or crisis than someone facing a physical emergency,” said Laira Roth, the council’s project manager for the first aid course.

Every year, the organization notes, one in four Americans will suffer from a mental illness or addiction. Half a million people across the country have already taken the training … and the biggest message is that an individual has the capacity to help. The Mental Health First Aid Action Plan begins: Assess for risk of suicide or harm. The other actions: Listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help and encourage self-help and other support strategies. In Hillsborough County, the phone number for the National Alliance for Mental Health is 813-273-8104. The address is P.O. Box 17856, Tampa, FL 33682. The 24/7 manned line is at the Crisis Center: just dial 211. For groups who want to have a class or join a class, call 914-469-2323. The SouthShore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging can cosponsor a class at your house of worship or other location. Much of the proceeding story was written by Lenny Bernstein of the Washington Post. The coalition reprints with permission.

Services Available in South County from Disabled American Veterans By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging DAV Chapter 110 in Sun City Center is typical of many chapters of the Disabled American Veterans organizations around the county and state that provide actual services to veterans. There are two main ongoing services or programs for residents of lower Hillsborough County. The first provides nocost transportation to ambulatory veterans who have medical appointments at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa. The van makes pickup stops in Ruskin, Sun City Center and Gibsonton every weekday.

for assistance in dressing, bathing, meal preparation or medication management, these fine volunteers will help. The ride-scheduling phone is 813-642-0302, and a meeting with the service officers can be scheduled by calling 813-331-3871. The office is at 1002 Cherry Hills Drive in Sun City Center. If you’re calling for a ride from Ruskin, Sun City Center or Gibsonton, it’s best to call a week ahead of time to ensure a seat in the van. The DAV asks that when scheduling your appointment at the VA, you let them know you’re riding in the van and they will try to make sure the schedules work together. The van drivers and the service officers are all volunteers, so there is no cost to the veterans.

The second program provides veterans or their spouses/ families with information on benefits and services they may be eligible to receive. This program includes the filing or assistance with filing claim forms for benefits as well as helping navigate the VA system. This is important, as many of the forms are for benefits to cover the cost of care needed as a result of a physical decline by either the veteran or the widow/widower. Furthermore, should a veteran need financial help with paying

Those Emergency Phone Numbers: What 211 and 911 Really Get for You

If you would like to become a community partner or an affiliate of 211Tampa Bay, call 727-210-4239. There are other -11 numbers that are useful. Dial 511 for emergency travel information — where the accidents and the highway delays are, for example. The 711 number enables people with a hearing or speech disability to use the telephone system by texting to call people with or without disabilities. The 811 number is a required call for digging projects large and small to avoid underground lines, pipes and cables in yards or construction sites.

By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging In a world filled with numbers and odd combinations of letters, 911 and 211 are the ones that count the most. Every man, woman and child, no matter what language they speak, should be taught these numbers because they are, literally, lifesavers. Call 911 in an emergency for fire, police, an ambulance or in any situation in which you need an emergency responder to come to your location. Dialing 911 links you immediately with a dispatcher who can send an emergency vehicle to you. The 211 number is not as well known, but also functions 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It’s the Crisis Center phone number, and caring and trained specialists will answer and help support you or your family through whatever difficult times you may be facing by providing you with emotional support, crisis intervention or suicide prevention response. With 211, people are never alone. For instance, help is available for housing and homelessness, for child care and early learning, for food and meals, and for disaster information. There are even people at 211 who will provide tax return assistance, diabetes health and control advice, health care and insurance information and early childhood development guidelines.

Suicide Prevention: What to Look For By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging “These are the times that try men’s souls,” said Thomas Paine. All too often today, men’s and women’s souls are so tried by time and circumstance that they simply give up. “Suicide,” says the National Alliance on Mental Health, “may be a manifestation of mental illness, but not all persons who commit suicide are mentally ill.” Here are some signs of depression and warning signals of suicidal thought:

• Feelings of helplessness and worthlessness; overwhelming guilt, shame or self-hatred

• Change in personality: Usually sad, withdrawn, irritable, anxious, tired, indecisive, apathetic or moody

• Sense of hopelessness about the future

• Change in behavior: Difficulty concentrating on school, work or routine tasks; change in eating habits such as a loss of appetite and/or weight or, overeating and/or weight gain: excessive tearfulness or crying • Change in sleep patterns: Oversleeping or, conversely, insomnia, sometimes with early waking • Loss of interest: Reduced interest in friends, sex, hobbies or other activities previously enjoyed • Fear of losing control: Fear of “going crazy” or harming oneself or others • Worries about money or illness: Either real or imagined

Do not be afraid to ask the person showing such symptoms if he or she is thinking about suicide. Just about everyone has contemplated suicide, however fleetingly, at one time or another. Raising the question of suicide shows you are taking the person seriously and responding to the potential of his or her distress. If the answer is “Yes, I do think of suicide,” you must take it seriously. Ask questions like: Have you thought about how you would do it? Do you have the means? Have you decided when you’ll do it? Have you ever tried suicide before? What happened then?

SouthShore Community Resource Guide

• Drug or alcohol abuse: It should be noted that drug and alcohol abuse lowers inhibitions and that people tend to do things when they are drunk or high that they wouldn’t normally do if they were sober • Recent loss: Loss through death, divorce, separation or a broken relationship. Even the loss of a job, money or status may trigger suicidal thoughts • Loss of religious faith • Nightmares • Agitation, hypertension and restlessness may indicate masked depression • Giving away possessions

Depending on their response, do not hesitate to contact your local 24-hour mental health crisis service by dialing 211 or your emergency 911 telephone service for help. Content from the "National Alliance on Mental Illness" contribution.

In the World of Special Education, Both Children and Parents Have Rights By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging Special education laws give children with disabilities and their parents important rights – and Hillsborough County has a good and strong program for special needs kids. Children with disabilities are defined as being between the ages of 3 and 22 with one or more of the following conditions: developmentally delayed, hearing impairment (including deafness), speech or language impairment, visual impairment, serious emotional disturbance, orthopedic impairment, autism, traumatic brain injury, specific learning disability or other health impairment. Special education laws give children with disabilities and their parents important rights, including the right to: 1 Have their child assessed or tested to determine special education eligibility and needs. 2 Inspect and review school records relating to their child. Attend an annual individualized education program (IEP) 3 meeting and develop a written plan with representatives of the local school district. 4 Resolve disputes with the school district through an impartial administrative and legal process.

In Hillsborough County, there are a number of phone numbers that should be helpful for people with questions about their children and the programs they need. These include: Autism Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities: 813-273-7288 Behavioral Support: 813-273-7228 Diagnostic and Learning Resources: 813-837-7777 Instructional Materials for the Visually Impaired: 813-837-7777 Hospital and Homebound: 813-375-3950, ext. 221 Instructional Support, Elementary: 813-273-7287 Instructional Support, Secondary: 813-273-7030 Prekindergarten: 813-744-8941, ext. 291 Sensory Programs (touch, blindness, etc.): 813-837-7840 Speech and Language: 813-273-7035

This community resource guide is a perfect example of the community collaboration required to make an area a wonderful place to live. Nevertheless, Sun City Center and the surrounding communities are targets for financial and economic scams. These scams usually victimize seniors, but the perpetrators are not picky and will be happy to elicit money from anyone. Some of the most prevalent scams in the South County area include the IRS impersonation scam, identity theft, investment scams, lottery and sweepstakes fraud, Internet fraud and telemarketing scams.

Most of these can be prevented with some training and education. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office provides education and awareness through various mediums, including brochures and seminars, to help people avoid being victimized. Call 813-242-5515 for more information.
