t last, the first signs of spring are beginning to burgeon, marking the start of the eagerly anticipated transition from winter to spring. The days are growing longer and the nights shorter and for me spring means lambs skipping in the fields, blossom on the trees and the chance to get outside and soak up the beautiful local surroundings. Spring is a promise of exciting times ahead, much like the announcement of the forthcoming rejuvenation project at Leek’s iconic London Mill. We will all watch with interest as this historic building is transformed into a centre for the creative arts. March and April are couriers of tempting, new season produce, inspiring us to replace the hearty comfort food of the winter months with lighter, fresher dishes and we hope this issue’s Recipe for Life will help you do just that! Also inside Leek Life this time we catch up with Leek songstress Rebecca Paris following the release of her debut single ‘Country Girl’ and hear about her plans to launch a new luncheon club (with a musical twist) for Leek’s senior residents to enjoy. We also hear from Jessica Owen who’s stunning paintings draw inspiration from the dramatic scenery of Leek and the surrounding Moorlands. Bolstered by a sponsorship deal with Farrow & Ball she ultimately hopes to open a gallery right here, in her home town. Once again, Leek’s thriving events calendar is brimming with festivals, shows and celebrations. From Leek Food and Drink Festival to the Foxlowe’s ethical fashion show - we’re here to make sure you don’t miss a thing. We hope you enjoy this latest edition of our magazine, happy reading!

Leek saddles up f second Western w
F
ollowing the huge success of last year’s Country and Western weekend, The Gun Fight at the Oatcake Corral, which was staged thanks to a legacy fund left to the town by former Leek councillor, businessman and community campaigner Steve Povey who tragically lost his battle with cancer back in 2011. It was one of Steve’s dying wishes of former town mayor and oatcake shop owner Steve that the town he loved stage an event the likes of which had not been seen before. On account of the overwhelming success of the event, which was held in Brough Park and coordinated by Leek Town Council Events Committee, it has been decided that a second Country and Western weekend will go ahead in 2015. This time however the Kingfisher Country Music Club will be at the helm. The Kingfisher Country Music Club was established in 2013 by Harold Critchlow and Julie Pointon, out of a shared love for Country Music, and in 2014 the duo were joined by Felicity Barber and Geoff Scholes who agreed to help them run the club. The foursome - all of whom are also members of the town’s events committee - played a key role in organising the first western weekend giving them a great basis on which to develop this year’s extravaganza. Julie told Leek Life: “In our bid to ‘keep it country’ we are able to bring into Leek a lot of talented British Country Music Artists and we hope to make it, as in previous years, a place where western wear is the norm. “Kingfisher Country Music Club has had a really positive 2 years, and we have steadily increased our numbers at our monthly socials from five to 70 plus and we are still growing. We are looking forward to 2015 at the club and the festival with much excitement. This years' festival, which is set to take place at Leek Hockey Club, will incorporate a mixture of wonderful British country music, with 8 Leek Life March/April 2015
potential artists including: Carolann B, Allan Watkiss, Kelly Michelle and Pete Storm (of the ‘This is Country’ Show), Root'nToot'n ,Thorne Hill, Travis Logan, Texas Rising and Whiskey Duo. The western re-enactment groups Lonestar and Lincoln County Regulators will be setting up their living history camp along with - new for this year - the Native Americans. Julie continued: “As with last year this event is held in loving memory of Steve Povey, without whose generous donation last years' event would not have taken place. “Since then we have recently lost Santa (Pete Dawson) who was instrumental in introducing us to the Lincoln County Regulators and Lonestar, helping us to make the ‘Gun Fight at the Oatcake Corral’ such a success. Trade stands and local community and charity groups are also invited to attend and anyone who is interested in being part of the event should contact the organisers as soon as possible. For the children amusements including hook the duck, strike the bell, swing boats and donkey rides have already been booked with many other activities in the pipeline. The Event will also take place in Leek's Town Centre on Saturday 13th June, 2015 from 10am to 4pm with the westerners performing sketches and Hazel and Roly - Silver Spurs Line Dancing club - organising Line Dancing in Derby Street where anyone can join in and have fun. The Westerners will be opening the weekend at 7.00pm on Friday 12th June, 2015, in the Marquee at the Hockey Club, with a traditional opening ceremony followed by an evening of wonderful Country Music provided by Kelly Michelle and Pete Storm with their " This is Country" show. The music in the marquee will kick off at 2pm until late on Saturday and from 10.00am until early evening on Sunday. The closing Trilogy will be performed by the Westerners towards tea time on the Sunday
p for n weekend afternoon. A full programme of events will be available closer to the date. Unfortunately, as there is no money available to pay for this year’s festival an admission fee will be charged to allow for artists and services to be paid for. “Lots of people are helping as volunteers and we are hoping to raise some money by sponsorship but we will still have to have an admission charge,â€? explained Julie. Various ticket bundles are available for either the entire weekend, evening admission, or full day tickets. Organisers are also offering some great discounts for early bird bookings made before Wednesday 30th April. Weekend admission prices start from ÂŁ32.50 per person, evening tickets from ÂŁ7.50 and full day admission from ÂŁ12.50 per person per day. Camping passes are also available for those unable to tear themselves away from the fun for some shut eye! Accompanied Children under the age of 16 will be Free. Under 16s un-accompanied and students with a current Student Card will be charged ÂŁ5.00 per person per day. For non campers there are numerous B&Bs and guesthouses in Leek, many of which are situated within walking distance of the event site. Bookings for admission and camping are now being taken and to reserve your place please contact either Harold on 0781 326 4165, Jue on 0794 104 1224 or Fliss on 01538 361234 or email doublesunsetfestival@gmail.com or keepitcountryyall@gmail.com. Kingfisher Country Music Club's next social is on Friday 20th March, 2015 with the Four Rivers Band at the Old Central, Market St. Leek, ST13 6HX, everyone is welcome and we will be kicking the music off from 7.30pm. New location gives s
The Francesco Group salon in Leek first opened its doors 27 years ago on Bodkin Courtyard and was launched by Francesco Group Founder, Francesco Dellicompagni.
Due to growing demand and salon success, Francesco was called upon again to launch the salon in its brand new location; prime position in the heart of Leek, on Market Place and three times the size of the original salon!
As Salon Franchisee for over 12 years, Paula Jones describes that this was the “perfect spot” for the new salon, “the premises was previously home to the Cooperative Travel Shop, so we really had a blank canvas to create our perfect salon. I wanted to create a feel of affordable luxury, where our clients come to a beautiful salon to feel relaxed and pampered. It's got a lovely modern feel, with nine styling sections in the main salon, fully air conditioned and separate shampoo area with mood lighting.”
The reception area is light and contemporary, hosted by the salon’s Front of House Team, who provide a warm and friendly welcome into the new salon. There are also designated areas within the salon for different services, including a Shampoo Zone and luxurious Colour Lounge, which boasts fine Italian leather chairs, for clients to relax in during their technical appointment. The whole salon has been decorated in natural, earthy tones to create a relaxing and calm salon ambience. The salon’s colour specialists have been intensely trained under the expert eye of the Group’s Creative Colour Director, Claire Chell. They ensure that every colour service in the salon is bespoke to each client and their haircut.
Training is something that Salon Franchisee, Paula Jones, is particularly passionate about, “Francesco Group has an outstanding training programme for Apprentices and qualified hairdressers alike, which ensures all learners are fully prepared for salon life and are skilled and confident in delivering high-quality hairdressing.” Francesco Group was recently recognised for its dedication to quality hairdressing training and was awarded the Training Award at the British Hairdressing Training Awards. The new location has also developed opportunities to expand, and the salon is currently looking to recruit two new Stylists and an Apprentice, to fulfil client demand.

Saying ‘I Do’ in 2015
A
s winter draws to a close and 2015 gets underway, brides and grooms will now be putting the finishing touches to the biggest day of their lives, as they prepare to say 'I Do' this Spring. Spring wedding trends for 2015 include bold patterns alongside natural nudes and light colours such as spring lemon, celestial blue, pistachio green, pearl and watermelon pink. Modern weddings are turning away from rigid tradition and instead, brides and grooms are combining elegance and magic with a strong sense of individuality. The result is a wedding that feels very personal and unique. Vintage crockery, marquee lights, refreshing cocktails, lace, cider and the outdoors-indoors styles are still on trend this year. To give your reception a real sense of occasion you might want to consider inviting the Trentham Brass Band to perform for you and your guests. Made up of forty talented musicians, the band will happily play everything and anything
from ABBA to Robbie Williams in line with your tastes. Flower arrangements these days are no longer neat and organised and many people now opt for free-spirited arrangements instead. Spring can also be the start of more humid conditions that can wreak havoc on wedding day hair, causing frizzy flyaways. No matter what your natural hair texture is like, humid weather isn't the time to force your hair into an unnatural style. Find a look that will embrace your own hair type as this will most effectively mask any strays. Moving from cold and wet winters into warmer spring climates can also cause hiccups with make up. Plenty of moisturiser can beat any dry skin caused by too much central heating and applying primer and setting spray will keep your wedding make-up on your face all day. Remember, the finishing touches really show off your personality and leave your guests with lasting and unique memories of the big day.

othering Sunday is just around the corner and if you haven't already, now is the time to put some thought into that special gift. Mothering Sunday is a special occasion for honouring the mothers of children and giving them presents. This year, it falls on March 15th, so there's still plenty of time to find something perfect for your Mum. Mums love the personal touch, so think about her hobbies, likes and interests. Is she a green fingered gardener? Does she like to be busy in the kitchen, baking up a beautiful cake or creating a three course masterpiece? Or perhaps she's creative – knitting, sewing, decoupage, or even painting. Tailor your gift to your Mum's personal taste.

show backs evolution n the 24th April 2013, 1133 people were killed and over 2500 were injured when a clothing factory collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Although this particular disaster was major in scale, social and environmental catastrophes in fashion supply chains continue to take place. In response to this fact the now global campaign ‘Fashion Revolution’ was born and is rapidly gaining momentum. In anticipation of the second anniversary of the Dhaka disaster, a group of ethically minded, fashion forward Leek residents have decided not to let this devastating incident be forgotten. In a bid to commemorate what has now been dubbed Fashion Revolution Day (24th April) and to raise awareness of the importance of buying ethically produced clothes, volunteers from the Foxlowe Arts Centre in Leek are planning to host a very special fashion show. Pauline Hart, who is helping to co-ordinate the second ethical fashion show at the Church Street venue, explained: “It’s really about making people aware of what they are wearing and the ethical issues that surround clothes production. “We want people to try and consider how their clothes are made and from where the fabrics are sourced.â€? The show will feature independent, local retail outlets including: Pachacuti, Melissa Claire, HollyCrow, The Wardrobe and Equatorial, all of which stock their shops with ethically sourced items. As well as the chance to purchase items modelled during the show, there will be a variety of stalls selling ethical jewellery and Fairtrade make-up from Tropic Skincare. As an extra treat for the audience, fashion students from Leek College will kick start the event by showcasing some of their fantastic creations. The fashion show will take place on Thursday evening 19th March. Tickets are available from the Foxlowe Arts Centre and also all of the retailers involved in the show. Tickets cost ÂŁ7 each including a glass of wine or a cup of tea or coffee.

undreds of people from across the Moorlands descended on Leek town centre in a show of pride and support for soldiers from The Mercian Regiment. Crowds lined the streets to welcome more than 60 soldiers as they marched through the town recently ahead of their deployment to Kenya this April. Renowned for courage and professionalism the regiment, which recruits from the five counties of the ancient Kingdom of Mercia including Derbyshire and Staffordshire, has in
the last 12 months alone, deployed on exercises to Cyprus, Lithuania and Uganda. In addition to the forthcoming operation in Africa this spring, the modern infantry unit is also expected to deploy to Canada during 2015. The soldiers, from A Company, 2nd Mercian Regiment, exercised their Freedom of the Town at lunchtime on Wednesday 18th February by marching from the offices of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council on Stockwell Street in a circular route along some of Leek’s key streets. Private Derby XXX, the Regimental Mascot ram – who made national headlines by switching on the Christmas lights in Ashbourne last November – lead the troops accompanied by the Band of the Royal Logistics Corps. Expressing the sense of pride felt by all concerned, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Leader, Councillor Sybil Ralphs, told Leek Life: “These occasions are always special and offer local people a chance to show their appreciation for the brave and selfless work undertaken by all of our armed forces. Corporal Nicholas Bradley, aged 23, from Leek added: “Parades through our home towns are very enjoyable. From Stockwell Street, soldiers marched down St Edward Street, onto Stanley Street and down Derby Street. A salute, involving local dignitaries, was taken at the Nicholson War Memorial and the parade then continued along Ball Haye Street and up Stockwell Street to finish back at Moorlands House. Following the march a reception was held in honour of the Mercian Regiment. Leek Life March/April 2015 17

Rebecca celebrates debut single
ot on the heels of the release of her debut music single Country Girl we caught up with Leek songstress Rebecca Done - aka Rebecca Paris - to hear about life as an entertainer and find out about her exciting plans for the future. After almost two decades in the entertainment industry the 35 year old, who’s vocals have taken her around the globe, is back here in Leek where she is finalising plans to give something back to her home town. At just 16 years of age, and driven by a passion for singing, the former Westwood High School pupil packed her bags and headed off into the world with just one ambition - to entertain. The years that followed saw her embark on various exciting adventures including a spell as a Red Coat in Blackpool and later jetting off to warmer climes, with solo tour circuits in Ibiza and other popular tourist spots. More recently, Rebecca’s enviable career has seen her perform alongside household names including Daniel O’Donell and Stan Boardman and also sharing her expertise with the next generation of musicians by managing acts thrown into the spotlight by Britain’s Got Talent and the X-Factor. Her debut single, which was released back in October earned high acclaim for the Park Road resident, selling thousands of copies across more than 200 countries worldwide. Rebecca, who intends to stand for Town and District Council in May, told Leek Life: “I’m in entertainment because I like to entertain people and make them happy. I really enjoy what I do. “I will eventually release another track, I’ve written another couple of songs but it’s finding the time to get down to the studio! The next chapter of her diverse career focuses on giving something back to her local community. After singing in hospital settings through contracts with various health care providers, and seeing the positive impact music can have on patients, Rebecca has decided to launch a brand
new luncheon club for local pensioners where they can enjoy a warm meal accompanied by musical entertainment and games. “I’m more interested in helping people than anything else; it’s so satisfying knowing people are having a good time. “I will be using the proceeds from the sale of my single to start the luncheon club at the Central Club in Leek. The first event will take place from 1pm until 4pm on Thursday 26th March and will take place on the last Thursday of the month thereafter. To find out more about Rebecca’s music, the luncheon club or her plans for the future email Rebecca_done@yahoo.com.

elebrating the Chinese New Year, rapidly growing sales and letting agent, EweMove, is officially opening their new Head Office near Leeds in West Yorkshire. February 19th was the start of the Year of the Sheep and significantly for EweMove it’s the year of the female, green sheep that people across the world will be celebrating. EweMove’s logo and company mascot is a friendly female green sheep called Ewenice, and all of their marketing has a strong sheep theme. The Year of the Sheep is a great coincidence and spells good fortune for this unique estate agency. EweMove co-founder and Head Shepherd, Glenn Ackroyd comments: “We were thrilled when we found out that 2015 was the Year of the Sheep, we couldn’t wait to officially open our new HQ which we affectionately call the ‘Sheep Pen’! It’s been great to invite all our Branch Directors up to Yorkshire for the grand opening. After an incredible year in 2014 with many new branches launching across the UK, EweMove, which has been a popular addition to the Leek property market since it was setup in October 2014, also scooped two prestigious awards at the Lettings Agency of the Year Awards and Estate Agency of the Year Awards in association with The Times, The Sunday Times and Zoopla. EweMove won Silver for Best Newcomer, Bronze for Best Innovation and they were also shortlisted for Best Property Management. Chris Walthall, who has lived and worked in Leek for over 30 years, commented: “I am delighted to be a part of the EweMove flock and I’m confident that our innovative approach to estate agency, combined with our 24/7 service and passion for baa-rilliant customer experience will make the Year of the Sheep a fortunate time for all people looking to buy, sell or rent out their properties locally.
“The key to our success and rapid growth is our culture and quirky ‘stand out from the crowd’ branding and our extensive marketing, he continued, “Our service includes providing amazing photographs, 2D and 3D colour floor plans as well as carefully crafted marketing descriptions which appear on all of the major property portals. First and foremost, we work hard to deliver results for our client’s With branches across the UK, EweMove pride themselves not only on having a stand out brand with a unique website and eye-catching For Sale/To-Let boards, but also on its superb customer service propositions, with a motto of “We’ll never fleece ewe. Equally, customers are not required to pay upfront fees or sneaky hidden charges. Most buyers will search online for their next home; this is why EweMove lists properties on all of the major property portals, which generates huge exposure. “We also operate a 24/7 service – not just online, but with real people answering the phone who can ensure that no viewing, enquiry, purchase offer or application is ever lost. It’s obvious really. Most people search for houses online when they’ve finished work, or at weekends - precisely when most agents are shut. They’re missing a trick as we get 50% more enquiries during these periods when many of our competitors are closed, so our client’s don’t miss out. For anyone wondering what their home is worth or what the rental value of a property in Leek is, the EweMove website features a free, online valuation tool that provides an instant valuation report. For a limited time only, EweMove Leek is running a launch offer which could save local vendors thousands of pounds, they will sell a property for 0.75% (excluding VAT) within the ST13 & ST9 areas. New safety regulations will affect domestic projects
I
f you are planning to have building done in your home, or you are a builder doing the work, be aware that the new Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 (CDM regs) will come into force on 6th April. They are the regulations for managing the Health, Safety and Welfare of construction project, regardless of size, duration and nature of work. For the first time, the CDM regs will apply to domestic client projects (householders). The change to CDM regs 2015 recognises the importance of the client as the head of the supply chain and is best placed to set the standards throughout a project A client is anyone who is having a construction project carried out. A commercial client is an organisation or an individual for whom a construction project is carried out in connection with a business, such as an office, warehouse, school or landlord. A domestic client is usually the person arranging for work done on the property where you or a family member lives. As the client you must make suitable arrangement to make sure through the planning, design and construction of a project that adequate thought is given to the health, safety and welfare of those affected and involved with the construction project and any decisions made are put into place. The client must appoint a Principle Designer to be responsible for coordinating the health and safety and welfare aspects of the pre-construction phase. The Principle Designer will usually be an organisation or on smaller projects an individual, with a technical knowledge of the construction industry relevant to the project with an understanding of how health and safety is managed through the design process. They will possess the necessary skills to oversee the health and safety during the pre-construction design stage of the project and the ongoing design. The Principle Designer needs to have a good relationship between the Client and the Principle Contractor and other designers on the project. The Principle Designer must be appointed in
writing by the Client and the role can be combined with other roles in the project, such as the architect/designer or Principle Contractor. A contractor is an individual, a sole trader, a self employed person, or a business who carried out, manages or controls construction work in connection with their business. This covers electricians, bricklayer, plasterer, plumbers, and other trades and professionals associated with the construction project. The Principle Contractor is the contractor in overall charge of the construction phase. The Client must appoint a Principle Contractor and there should be only one Principle Contractor for a project at any time. The Principle Contractor manages the construction phase of a project, which involves liaising with the Client and the Principle Designer throughout the project, including the pre-construction and design stage. Depending upon the nature of the project, the Principle Designer and Principle Contractor may be supported by designers, contractors and workers. The Principle Contractor has a duty to manage the Health and Safety on the construction site, preparing a construction phase plan to ensure work is carried out without risk to health or safety, manage and monitoring the plan to check work is carried out safely, controlling the site to prevent unauthorised access, give safety advice to visitors and workers on site and provide welfare facilities throughout the construction phase. The Principle Contractor ensures the workers on site are competent to do so. The New CDM regs are too complex to cover on a single page, further information is available on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website and other internet sources, if in doubt discuss the issue with your architect or building contractor.

WHY USE A CHARTERED PLANNING CONSULTANT?
A
What is a chartered planning consultant and what can they offer?
chartered planning consultant is someone recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute as being an experienced and competent professional. Getting planning permission can be complicated. As an experienced chartered planning consultant I can help you through this maze. I have a good up-todate knowledge of the Moorlands, the Council’s policies and approach, of national planning policy and recent rule changes, all of which prove invaluable when negotiating complex planning applications. A case in point is the recent relaxation in planning rules allowing the conversion of farm buildings to residential use without having to apply for full planning permission. Councils across the country are refusing such applications with over half of the applications being refused. This practice has obtained permission for the conversion of four farm buildings in the last few months including probably the first such
permissions in the Moorlands and Derbyshire Dales. Now is a good time to bring forward housing development whether it is a new build or conversion – because of both a local and national shortage of housing and housing land. Staffordshire Moorlands, Derbyshire Dales and Cheshire East Councils are all reviewing their housing needs and looking to identify future land for development. Part of the review in the Moorlands includes possible changes to the Green Belt, particularly where villages are surrounded by Green Belt. Planning consultants deal with all kinds of development including not just planning applications but also planning enforcement and Certificates of Lawfulness where one needs to prove something is legal. We offer a full service from the conception of the proposal including obtaining detailed plans, carrying out agricultural appraisals, ecological surveys and heritage statements.
Ken Wainman Associates Ltd Chartered planning consultant and licensed bat surveyor Excellent track record obtaining planning permissions, winning appeals and resolving enforcement issues. We organize everything from concept through to the decision including plans, specialist reports, wildlife surveys and structural surveys. Current projects include farm building conversions, agricultural worker’s dwellings, conversion of a church to a house, an application for an infill house in the Green Belt and residential development, stables and riding areas. 29a St Edward Street, Leek, Staffordshire, ST13 5DN t 01538 386 808 | m 07968 774785 w www.kenwainmanassociates.co.uk | e ken@sgaplanners.co.uk 28 Leek Life March/April 2015

Dave reflects on 25 year career
A
fter 25 years with Staffordshire County Council, Gritting Manager Dave Rushton is not averse to coming across emergency situations or helping members of the public in distress. When the wintry weather strikes Dave is tasked with the unenviable job of inspecting the rural roads of Leek throughout the night, while many of us are at home, safely tucked up in bed. Looking back on his career with the council, which spans a quarter of a century, he recalls: “When you are out on winter nights and mornings it is not unusual for us to be the first to come across people needing assistance and we all see it as just part of our job to help where we can. Just after Christmas quick thinking Dave swung into action to raise the alarm after he came across a fire at a furniture factory on the Barnfield Road Industrial Estate. A faint smell of smoke alerted him to the blaze which was beginning to sweep through the premises. He said: “When I am out checking the roads there is usually not another soul around so I am always extra vigilant and just get a sense when something isn’t quite right. “I wound down the car window and thought I could smell smoke, so I decided to pull over and got out to take a closer look. I couldn’t see any flames but could hear a strange crackling and knew instinctively it was a fire. “I was just pleased that I was there to be able to raise the alarm as the fire inspector said the blaze would have been even worse than it was if they didn’t get there when they did. For the unassuming community highways liaison officer, who later rolled out the gritters from the Ladderedge depot to ensure the roads were ready for the morning commute, this wasn’t the first time he has stepped in to help. Around 18 months ago he was also first on the site to pull a woman out of a smouldering car. Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council’s
Cabinet Support Member for Highways & Transport, praised Dave’s swift response, and said: “While most of us were tucked up in bed, Dave was doing what he does on many a bitter winter morning and was out inspecting the roads first hand to help ensure he keeps drivers safe on the move in the Moorlands. “He is definitely one of those characters that the council and the community can always count on.

key fragment of the Queen of the Moorlands’ rich architectural heritage is set to be brought back to life thanks to an exciting regeneration project. Located at one of the main gateways to the town, London Mill in Ashbourne Road, Leek, has lain inactive for many years inspite of the vital role it once played in the local production of textiles. Now, thanks to an exciting regeneration project, a new lease of life is on the cards for the historic building, something planners believe could spell a major boost for people working locally in the creative industries. It was announced at the end of January that the Grade II listed mill is set to receive ÂŁ800,000 in Growth Deal funding, to allow for the building to be transformed into a centre for the arts. The funding will help to deliver a ÂŁ3.5million scheme which will include 14 workshop units and 12 apartments, as well as other commercial units. It will also create parking spaces, the lack of which has held back redevelopment. The project, led by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and supported by Staffordshire County Council, will complement a major refurbishment of Leek College and wider redevelopment of the Leek Mill Quarter, which it is hoped will attract significant private investment. Work on London Mill is set to be completed in 2017, which comes as just one of four similar projects currently in the pipeline across Staffordshire, all of which are due to benefit from this latest round of the Growth Deal. Philip Atkins, Leader of Staffordshire County Council, told Leek Life Magazine: “Staffordshire has stepped up to the challenge and is on a roll in terms of our delivery of projects which will have a major impact on long-term economic growth and job creation. “This announcement means people in Leek and the surrounding areas can look forward to regeneration and greater employment and leisure opportunities. “The expansion of our Growth Deal is further recognition by the Government of our commitment

40(506( -5.3056%4 to create employment and our ability to get the job done where major projects are concerned. Councillor Sybil Ralphs, Leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and portfolio holder for regeneration, commented: “Having conceived the idea and then personally led this project from the start, I am delighted that funding has been secured. “It is fantastic and exciting news which will see major investment at a location which is one of the key gateways into Leek. It means we can fulfil our objective of transforming yet another of the town’s heritage buildings for contemporary use attracting jobs and growth. “The Moorlands has a proud tradition of creativity covering a broad spectrum from our rich architectural heritage to our worldwide reputation for textiles. This latest project builds on that by providing the space for today’s creative industries to continue to thrive in the Moorlands and meeting the demand that our research has shown exists. I look forward to seeing this mill building operating once again as a busy hub of activity. “I’d also like to thank Staffordshire County Council for their support and co-operation on the project – it has been an excellent example of true partnership working which has delivered results. The LEP Chair David Frost added: “This is excellent news and enables us to build on our substantial Growth Deal announced last year. “It again demonstrates the Government’s confidence in our ability to deliver major job creating projects on time and on budget. “The first Growth Deal-funded project is already underway with two more to follow in the coming months. We set an ambitious job creation target, but we know these developments will attract significant further investment and support us in achieving it.

ivic dignitaries from acrosss the Staffordshire Moorlands, East Staffordshire and Derbyshire gathered for the third annual Four Towns Ball on Saturday 7th February. The event, which was staged in the plush surroundings of the Alton Towers Hotel, was organised by a hard working committee of mayors and deputy mayors from the neighbouring towns of Leek, Cheadle, Ashbourne and Uttoxeter. The inaugural ball took place back in 2013 and came about as a happy consequence of The Four Towns Initiative, a scheme established to help foster a good working relationship between the local market towns. Over the past three years, representatives sitting as part of the four towns committee have met regularly to promote common interests and tourism within the four member towns, working together to find solutions to shared issues and assist each other where possible. The proceeds from each ball are divided between the four town mayors in support of their individual charity work. At the helm this year was: Leek Town Mayor Keith Harrison, Cheadle Town Mayor Ron Locker, Ashbourne Town Mayor Sandra Spencer and Uttoxeter Town Mayor Councillor Karen Haberfield. 32 Leek Life March/April 2015

How to choose a network marketin Network Marketing? Direct Marketing? Party Plan? Pyramid Schemes? – they offer great money making opportunities right? But we’ve all heard that pyramid schemes are scams and know someone that knows someone who has lost money. Yet the world seems to be full of people boasting about their successes and riches gained from this type of business. What are you supposed to believe? And should you give it a go? Firstly you need to understand a couple of things about this type of scheme, and then I will focus on how you go about finding the right scheme for you. Pyramid schemes, rather like those old fashion chain letters were devised so that there were high volumes of people at the bottom of the business paying into the scheme with a few people at the top reaping all the benefits. Network or direct marketing schemes (sometimes known as multi level marketing) will have a product. A small investment will be made for a starter kit to enable the seller/consultant to demonstrate the product and take orders. Sometimes sold by party plan or direct to a consumer. Those at the top of the structure do earn more
34 Leek Life March/April 2015
money because they have built teams and everyone within the structure has the ability to elevate their status. The more you put in the more you get out. FACT – pyramid schemes are illegal in the UK and no longer exist. FACT – The Direct Selling Association (DSA) regulates direct marketing companies in the UK to ensure that sellers and consumers are protected, ensuring everyone gets a fair deal. Why become a direct marketer? There are many reasons you may wish to take up an opportunity with a direct marketing company. Flexibility/working from home or around children or another job. Work where you want and when you want. Supplementing an existing income. Ability to save for a special occasion. There are simply hundreds of companies out there, with more being launched every day, so how do you choose one? • Check the company is registered with the DSA. • Do your research. Talk to people in the business as well as those who declined the opportunity to get a balanced perspective. What works for one person doesn’t for another. • Try the product? If you wouldn’t use it yourself it can be harder to sell. • Does the product have special beneficial features that make it more saleable, i.e. organic, natural, UK made, not tested on animals etc • Do the company offer free training and support? • Look for a company where you can order to customer demand rather than having to hold stock so that you’re never out of pocket. • Does the company have easy opt out clauses. A good company will allow you to cease trading at any point, allowing you to try the scheme without high risk. • Does this company provide a start up package at low cost (typically <£100) so you can start trading. What is included?

ting scheme • Is the brand a household name – a well known brand is easier to sell. If you are looking for a get rich scheme I’d advise you against this type of business. There are people making a lot of money in network marketing but they do work hard for it – if that’s for you go for it. The rewards are there if you’re prepared to go and get them. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is so step away. You will also need to register to complete a tax return and probably need to take out an insurance policy. From a personal perspective, I chose Neal’s Yard Remedies because I wanted an ethical product from the health and wellbeing industry to sit alongside my existing business Reflections Coaching. I knew nothing about the beauty industry. I’ve been doing parties and events for about 12 months and have some regular customers now. I love the company for its ethics, I’m enjoying the social side of it and have converted completely to organic beauty products and can feel the difference. I’m now recruiting my own team and using the coaching skills I already have to support others starting their own direct marketing business. urning to the arts following a personal tragedy, Leek landscape artist Jessica Owen has recently earned sponsorship from revered paint makers Farrow and Ball, whilst working along side the creme de la creme of contemporary artisans at one of Manchester's most exclusive, creative hubs. Originally from Bollington, just north of Macclesfield, Jessica set her heart on moving to Leek after being talent spotted by a local art curator during her first major exhibition. “After finishing my degree in 2002 the best students were chosen to take part in a big show in London. While I was there I was approached by a lady who was organising a contemporary arts exhibition in Leek. “This led to another show at Out of the Blue in Stockwell Street - my first solo exhibition – and after spending time here I fell in love with it and decided this was where I wanted to live,â€? she explained. Fast forward more than a decade and the 36 year old is, along with her husband Jason and 19 month old daughter Jemima Bunny, doing just that. Despite her natural flare for art and undoubted success as a painter, Jessica’s life was coasting along quite a different course until her father passed away suddenly. “I was very academic and my dad was my authoritarian, he always encouraged me to work hard and I wanted to make him proud. I was 18 when he passed away and I rebelled completely and went into the arts. Dad dying was life changing but drawing helped me. I’m a really emotional painter and found it very cathartic.â€? Jessica’s Northern Scapes Studio is based within the highly esteemed Manchester Craft 36 Leek Life March/April 2015
and Design Centre – home to some of the most celebrated names in the contemporary art scene. Her moving landscape paintings have not only been recognised by Farrow and Ball, but have also been called upon by designers from Curve Interior Design to add the finishing touch to their projects and have also appeared on television series including Channel 4's Utopia and this spring will feature on Paul Abbott's (writer of Shameless) forthcoming drama No Offence. Taking her inspiration largely from the dramatic landscapes of the Peak, Jessica’s Leek home means she is well located when the need to feed her imagination calls. “I have always really loved the countryside. I can get physically moved just driving across a beautiful landscape. “My work is semiabstract and quite dream like. I work with my hands so there are always tell tale signs of paint on my fingers! “Having a working studio means I’m on hand to show customers how it’s done, we take lots of commissions and I love the thought of my work being in people’s homes - there is no bigger compliment. Speaking about plans for the future Jessica added: “I really believe that Leek is an up and coming place, many small towns seem to be struggling but our High Street is thriving. “Hopefully one day I will be able to open a small contemporary gallery here, I would love to bring something to my home town. Keep up to date with Jessica’s work, future exhibitions and her blog by visiting www.northernscapes.co.uk or by following her on Facebook at northernscapes or Twitter @northernscapes.

Important modifications have been made in the cabin as well, with an emphasis on the quality of the materials, which look and feel better. Equipment and colour choices have also been increased. Under the skin important modifications have been made to improve the suspension, handling and ride comfort, as well as significantly reducing noise and vibration levels. The powertrain choice is unchanged, with two petrol engines, a diesel and a hybrid. The three-
cylinder 1.0-litre petrol unit has been substantially improved for greater thermal efficiency, delivering better fuel economy and taking CO2 emissions below 100g/km. Likewise, adjustments to the hybrid system have reduced CO2 levels from 79 to 75g/km, with a concurrent improvement in combined cycle fuel economy to 85.6mpg. The overall aim has been to give Yaris more emotional appeal, but without sacrificing any of its successful rational qualities, such as its packaging, durability and cost of ownership. Alessandro Massimino, Toyota’s Brusselsbased product manager, said: “Yaris was always extremely strong in its rational dimensions. What we wanted to achieve was to connect the model not only with our customers’ brains, but also with their hearts. The project itself marks a major milestone in the history of Toyota in Europe, with the Europebased product planning, research and development and design departments working together to deliver new designs and changes to the vehicle platform that are being adopted for other Toyota models around the world.
