What’s inside...

Welcome to the 10th annual Stone Food & Drink Festival programme... It’s hard to believe that it’s 10 years since we first hosted a Food and Drink Festival in Stone. From humble beginnings in the town square and Crown Hotel, the event has grown year on year to become a real fixture of the foodie calendar.

We’re hugely proud of the town and our community for the support it gives the festival – from the local businesses who get involved by running events or offering sponsorship, to the volunteers who give up their time to ensure the weekend goes swimmingly, and to each and every one of you who attend the event to have a good time.

And the town is at the very heart of why we work so hard to put this event on every year - the festival remains a Community Interest Company dedicated to bringing people into Stone to boost the local economy in October each year, whilst also aiming to raise the town’s profile as a year-round tourist and foodie destination. Every penny of profit is ploughed back into the coffers with the aim of making the following year’s event even more of an attraction. Enjoy browsing the programme to see what new events – and old favourites – the 2014 festival has in store for you, and we look forward to seeing you the first weekend of October this year (and hopefully for many more to come)!

Richard Stevens Best wishes

A CELEBRATORY FESTIVAL ALE thanks to Titanic Brewery!

To help mark the festival’s 10th anniversary, Burslem-based Titanic Brewery will be producing a special festival ale to be sold in its Stone pub,The Royal Exchange, and on site at Westbridge Park in the Titanic Beer Festival marquee.

What makes the brew - which is yet to be named - even more special is that it will be brewed traditionally in the historic brew house on the Shugborough Estate.Titanic Brewery’s Dave Bott says:

“Each month we brew a special ale at the Shugborough Brew House for one of our pubs and, with the Stone Food & Drink Festival celebrating its 10th anniversary this October, it seemed apt to use September’s brewing slot to produce a special celebratory ale for the Royal Exchange. We have been attending the festival since the Royal Exchange opened its doors back in 2008 – so this will be our 7th year. It’s been great to see the event grow year on year and we look forward to many more in the future.”

Designed and produced by Stone and Eccleshall Life Magazines. Photographs courtesy of Pam Campbell

WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK... To help ensure we keep our visitors happy and the festival continues to get bigger & better year on year, we’re keen to find out what you think – along with things like how far our visitors travel, what they spend on average during their visit, what their favourite events/attractions are and what can be improved. To this end, we’re delighted to announce that we’ve teamed up with Staffordshire University and its Tourism & Events Management students, expertly guided by their lecturers, have worked with us to compile a survey. Fellow students will be in and around town over the festival’s ‘Big Weekend’ asking visitors to spare just a couple of minutes to complete the survey; with the incentive win prizes from a ‘lottery’ of great food & drink items.

whom the event just wouldn’t be possible, while clocking up valuable work experience hours toward their courses. It’s a pleasure to be working with Staffordshire University in what we hope will be a long-standing relationship and would like to thank all of the lecturers and students for their support, hard work and commitment.

THERE’S A GOOSE ON THE LOOSE at the festival this year! This year on Westbridge Park visitors are in for a real treat as Goose on the Loose’s pop-up tearoom graces the event for the first time. Run by sisters Mandy - otherwise known as ‘Mrs Goose’ - and Tessa, of Goose on the Loose events, the tearoom will be a real feast for the senses; serving delicious light lunches and salads alongside traditional afternoon teas and cakes in stunning surroundings. Offering visitors the chance to sit down and sip tea from fine bone china cups - or enjoy a cold Pimms or nice glass of wine with their food - the latest pop-up addition to the festival compliments The Lewis Partnership’s popular Pop-up restaurant, which will once again serve gourmet three course lunches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and exclusive, ticket-only evening meals on festival Friday and Saturday.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming Mandy,Tessa and their team to the festival and I’m confident it will be a hugely popular addition. Several of our volunteers who were helping out on the stand at Shrewsbury Food Festival went and sampled Mandy’s cakes – for research purposes, of course – and can attest that they are absolutely delicious!” To enjoy Goose on the Loose’s fabulous menu, simply pop in on the day – to secure your table at The Lewis Partnerships’ Pop-Up restaurant, call 01785 712217 or email info@moathouse.co.uk

Designed and produced by Stone and Eccleshall Life Magazines.

Festival Chairman, Richard Stevens, explains: “It was my good lady wife who mentioned, at last year’s festival review meeting, that there was nowhere

on Westbridge Park where you could sit down for a proper cup of tea – so we decided there and then that a pop-up tea tent was a must for 2014.We wanted to work with someone who could put on a show and make the tea tent a real experience, and already having seen Goose on the Loose in action we knew they could more than deliver the goods.

Award-winning farm shop & Bistro Aston Marina is once again generously hosting the festival Park & Ride service – due to restricted parking in Stone town centre, we strongly recommend that all visitors use this quick and simple way of getting to Westbridge Park – and, with either a conventional bus or canal ‘water bus’ service on offer, you can elect to take a leisurely cruise to the festival site. Aston Marina is located on the southern outskirts of town on the A51 - follow the yellow road signs from all the major roads into Stone. Return shuttle bus ticket £2 per person Water bus - £5pp each way (call 01785 819702 to book in advance)

EXTRA PEACE OF MIND This year festival goers will be in safe hands should the worst happen, as local company AED Sales UK has generously offered us use of a Defibrillator for the weekend. Bolstering the event’s usual first aid arrangements, the state-of-the-art machine will be located on Westbridge Park ready for action should anyone experience a heart attack or cardiac arrest. Jamie Richards, Managing Director at Stone High Street based AED Sales UK said:“We are delighted to donate a Defibrillator to the Food & Drink Festival to help ensure that safety and wellbeing of our local community is priority over one of the biggest weekends in Stone. “The chance of survival after Cardiac Arrest decreases minute by minute, but if someone is treated with a Defibrillator within 3 minutes their chance of survival increases by 70%.” For further information on AED Sales UK’s Defibrillators visit www.aedsalesuk.co.uk.
