Solicitor to residents: ‘Turn the page’

RANSOM TWP. - Ransom Township residents in attendance at the Township Board of Supervisors meeting Dec. 3 questioned Supervisor Dennis Macheska about personal charges made to his township credit card. Macheska said the card was issued in his name under his social security number and paid from his personal bank account, which is separate from township finances. Therefore the charges were lawfully permitted, he said. Township Solicitor Edmund Scacchitti assured those in attendance that this is the truth and Macheska did nothing illegal. Scacchitti said the issue was already investigated thoroughly in light of the incident involving alleged theft of township finances by former Ransom Township Secretary-Treasurer Kathy Zielinski, who pleaded guilty that morning to a second-degree felony count of theft by unlawful taking. “Kathy Zielinski pled guilty today,” he said. “I’ve only been in this job for11months, but there’s a lot of hard feelings that I’ve seen since I’ve been here over relationships between her and some of you here in the audience. CLARKS SUMMIT- At the Dec. 5 Abington Heights School District Reorganization meeting, President Cathy Ann Hardaway and Vice President Warren Acker were approved to continue serving in their current positions through the 2012-13 school year. Board member Louise Brzuchalski was unanimously voted

by the board to serve as President Pro Temp for the reorganization. Hardaway, who was sworn in by Lackawanna County Judge Carmen D. Minora, was approved by a vote of 6-0. Vice President Warren Acker and board member Jeanne Cadman were absent and Hardaway abstained. Acker was approved by a vote of 7-0 and will be sworn

in at a later date. “I want to thank everyone for their confidence in Warren and myself, but I must say the confidence lies in us as nine (board members),” Hardaway said. “The collegial attitude we have and the relationships that we have with each other make it work. CLARKS SUMMIT- The Borough of Clarks Summit selected a new police chief at its Council meeting Dec. 5 with a 7-0 vote. Joe Laguzzi, 41, of Clifford Twp., currently a police sergeant in Carbondale, where he has served for 20 years, is scheduled to be sworn in at the January Council meeting. The position has been vacant since the retirement of the former chief Louis Vitale Jr. April 30. At that point, Officer Chris Yarns took the temporary role of officer in charge and Council members praised him for his hard work in that time. Laguzzi said he is looking forward to working in Clarks Summit, which he referred to as “a great town, great community.” “I’m very proud to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of Clarks Summit,” he said, thanking Council. He introduced his wife Amy, a first grade teacher. In other business, representatives of the Abington Regional Wastewater Authority (ARWA) gave a report on its planned $35 million plant expansion. ARWA Solicitor Mike Donohue explained construction on the project is expected to begin in April. Council approved next year’s budget, which includes a $4 increase in sewer rates and no increase in taxes. Funding for the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board (AAJRB) was reduced to 75 percent of the amount requested, with a commitment from Council to meet full funding next year. Council discussed various committee reports. Other actions included votes for the following resolutions and ordinances: Ordinance 2012-14, a vote to accept a Tax Anticipation Note bid from PNC Bank for $300,000 Tax Anticipation Note at 1.78 percent; Ordinances 1317; Resolution 2012-24 involving pave cuts; Resolution 2012-25 for the sale of borough property on Summit Avenue; Abington Assisted Living sewer passthrough agreement and an amended parking meter ordinance.

ver the past15 years that Clarks Green Assembly of God presented its Live Nativity, the event has continued to grow and change. But what has remained the same is its status as a free gift to the community in celebration of the free gift from God to the world: His Son Jesus, born in a manger. According to Louise Cator, church secretary, the event, which is a reenactment of Jesus’ birth has always been a simple one, yet it changes from year to year. “It’s morphed,” she said. “It’s taken different shapes.” Co-organizer Cindy Sebring agreed, “And in the end, it always has the same meaning.”

According to church members and event planners Brad and Cindy Sebring, of Dalton, the Live Nativity includes a cast of about 20 including the choir and Pastor Glenn White Jr., who is the narrator. It also hosts a variety of live animals, such as goats, sheep, donkeys and alpacas. The animals are loaned from church members and community farms, one of which is Sunshine Farm, in New Milford, which brings the alpacas. The church’s handicapped accessible fellowship hall will be open during the entire event all three nights and beverages, coffee, cookies and hot dogs will be served. A children’s craft activity will also be available. New this year is a live video stream of the outdoor Nativity, See Nativity, Page 12

Speaking on behalf of the Lackawanna County Association of Boroughs and S.T.O.P. (Scranton Taxing Our People), the committee organized by the association to oppose the Scranton commuter tax, Mayor Alex Chelik of Mayfield announced a fundraising drive to raise money for the litigation expenses connected with an upcoming hearingon the City’s request to assess and collect a 1 percent surcharge on the income or wage tax paid by commuters beginning January 1, 2013. “We have engaged an attorney with past experience in this type of litigation and we have costs for his services as well as to reproduce exhibits for the hearing,” Chelik said, “so we need your help to meet our costs.” Non-residents who work in the city now have a 1 percent wage tax withheld from their earnings and paid to Scranton, which collects and forwards the tax to their home municipalities. The wage tax is then

usually divided between the home municipality and the local school district. The city filed a petition to obtain court approval to collect and keep an additional 1 percent tax from non-residents who work in Scranton. The tax surcharge will double the amount of local income taxes being paid by those persons from 1 to 2 percent. As a financially distressed city, Scranton can ask to renew the tax surcharge on nonresidents on a yearly basis. The wage taxes assessed on city residents are not being increased. Each municipality that has not already done so is requested by S.T.O.P to donate $200 to begin the legal process. The committee is also asking commuters to participate, and individual donations can be made by check payable to “LCAB Stop Scranton” and mailed to 739 Penn Avenue, Mayfield, PA, 18433. Donations can also be made online at stopscranton.com.

eah Ducato Rudolph, Abington Community Library Director and Ken Rudolph, MD, met in 1979 as a result of a date arranged by their parents. Ken was home in the Pittsburgh suburbs on a break from his residency program in Internal Medicine in Scranton. Leah was working and living in Pittsburgh. “Our parents, who were friends, had suggested we meet as we seemed to have a lot in common,” said Leah. “Actually, I never wanted my mother to fix me up because, what could my mother know? Why would my mother fix me up with somebody that I would like? What does she know?” said Ken. “Well, prior to Leah she fixed me up with another girl she met in Pittsburgh. Mom called to say, ‘I met this girl. She lives in Philadelphia and I met her in ‘Horne’s.’ It turned out the girl was a model from Lancôme Cosmetics and beautiful. I thought, ‘My mother picked this woman?’ So, when she told me she had this other girl in mind for me to meet, I thought, ‘Well, she didn’t do so badly the first time. Maybe I’ll check it out again.” One criterion was, according to Ken, “She had to be Italian. My mother was Italian. And if the girl wasn’t Italian, she wasn’t good.” Leah Ducato, dating someone and not looking to meet anyone new, said her father phoned to let her know Ken would be calling for a blind date. “My mother started the conversation. She said, ‘We’d like you to go out with Kenny Rudolph. He’s going to be home for vacation and you should go out with him, or hang out with him while he’s home,’” said Leah. “I really didn’t want to bother, but my dad got on the phone and said, ‘Look! You don’t have to marry the guy; just go out with him one time. Do it as a favor to me.’ My father offered to give me his Horne’s credit card so I could buy a new dress to wear on the date. I went shopping right after work. I got on a bus and went downtown. I looked all around Horne’s for a new dress and ended up with a cheap, vinyl purse,” she said with a laugh.

She kept purse to this day. “I didn’t even get a shower or wash my hair for this date because I was shopping for a dress.” Their first date took place at a Polynesian Restaurant in Monroeville in September 1979. Leah said her first impression of Ken was “shock.” “I was shocked how much he resembled one of my favorite Pittsburgh Steelers: Rocky Bleier.” She recalled details of the date: “I was most impressed that Ken got chosen out of the crowd to learn how to ‘hula’ on stage. I don’t think he’ll ever do something like that again, but he was a good sport that night.” The words Ken used to describe his first impression of Leah are “genuine,” “personable” and “a believable person.” A few days after their first date, he suggested they go out again. “…She politely declined,” Ken said. “She told me, ‘I thought I told you to never call me again.’ I thought, ‘Did I miss something here? I must have missed the boat.’” He added, “Then a week or two later, my mother said, ‘Leah and her sister, Lisa Ducato Ross, are going to New York and they wondered if they could stop by Scranton to see you.’ I thought, ‘Wait a minute. She blew me off. Now they’re coming up to visit me. I don’t understand this. In the meantime, she broke up with her boyfriend.” In early December 1979, they had their second date and the rest, as they say, “is history,” said Leah. She shared her backstory. “My parents liked him. It’s infinitely easier to date somebody your parents like…. Just from that one date, we really did have a very nice time. He was a lot of fun. He was a gentleman. I thought, ‘I really would like to get to know him

better. This would be a missed opportunity if I didn’t.’” So, Leah asked her sister Lisa if she would drive to Scranton with her and planned to tell Ken they were passing by on their way to New York. Lisa shopped while Ken and Leah spent time together. Sometime early in the New Year 1980, Ken was home in the Pittsburgh suburbs and took Leah back to Scranton for a few days. “In the car, I asked him what his parents had to say about our budding relationship. He said they wanted to know what his intentions were. I wondered as well, and said, ‘So, what did you tell them?’ He said, ‘I told them we were going to get married.” She was shocked again. “Astounded, I told him he’d better ask my father first.” They were officially engaged around Valentine’s Day when Ken presented Leah with an engagement ring and a single red rose, which Leah preserved. Six months later on July 5, 1980 they were married at Ken’s Presbyterian Church in the Pittsburgh suburb of Oakmont. The hot summer day at fell in the span between Ken’s graduation from a medical residency and the start of his practice. Their reception was held at the Churchill Valley Country Club amidst the Fourth of July holiday, complete with fireworks. More than 32 years later, they reside in Clarks Summit where they raised three children: Dania Rudolph Edwards, 29, Julia, 27 and Michael, 25. A Myers-Briggs-type personality test they took years ago after they were married, typed them as nearly identical with the exception that “Ken is a ‘Thinker’ and I’m a ‘Feeler,” said Leah. Their common interests include service to their church, golf and watching sporting events. The moral of their story, according to Leah: “There is definitely something to be said about taking your parents advice and arranged marriages…Simply meeting someone with a similar background and interests can go a long way in establishing the basis of a match made in heaven.”

Gerrie Fitzgerald Carey, Clarks Summit Borough councilwoman, said she was born a Democrat. Carey recently received the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women Outstanding Elected Democratic Woman 2012 award Nov. 18 at a luncheon in Camp Hill. Susan Rutt, Chair, presented Carey with the award. The organization, based in Harrisburg, is comprised of 18 districts throughout the state. According to the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women website, “Each year, the federation honors an outstanding Democratic woman elected to public office in Pennsylvania. The honorees have made significant contributions to the Commonwealth, have supported the Federation and the Democratic Party and have consistently aided other women seeking elective office. On hand to watch their mother accept the award were her children: Mary Ellen Berry, Colleen Berry and Rick Carey. Her son, Hutch, was unable to attend. Carey serves on the Democratic Executive Committee, which she said is “actually the heart and soul of the Demo-

cratic Party as far as endorsing candidates and also supporting the Democratic slates.” She is active in the Lazareth and Eucharistic Ministries of Our Lady of the Snows church and the Society of Irish Women. She also recently joined the Abington Heights Civic League and is on the board of Clarks Summit State Hospital. When asked how she feels about being a Democratic woman, Carey said, “I have learned from my parents, to respect my faith and party. Both feeding off one’s conscience. Women have some special God -given gifts that when put into place make them good candidates who will work with sincerity and integrity for all the people.” She is married to Bill Carey.

ROTARY REACHES OUT Abington Rotarians and family members spent Nov. 25 helping three families in the Rockaways section of New York City clear Hurricane Sandy debris from their homes. INTERACT NEWS Members of the Abington Heights Interact Club recently did a presentation on the Club for Rotary Club of the Abingtons. President Emily Davis and Sarah Parkinson, Secretary, gave the presentation. The Club has about 40 members this year and has added requirements for membership, including participation in at least one service project/quarter of their choice and assistance with club sponsored endeavors (a minimum of two planned/year). The club will also work on something to advance international understanding and goodwill. Students host book swap

TCMC presents ‘Going Global’

The Commonwealth Medical College will present Going Global: International Opportunities in Medical and Public Health Education by Olapeju Simoyan, MD, MPH, BDS, today, Dec. 12, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in The Commonwealth Medical College’s Medical Sciences Building, 525 Pine St. Scranton. Simoyan will share her experiences as an Erasmus Mundus Scholar in Europubhealth, a European Public health Masters Program at the French School of Public Health in Rennes, France and as a Fulbright Specialist Scholar at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos in Lagos, Nigeria. Lunch will be provided.

CLARKS SUMMIT- The National Honor Society at Abington Heights High School recently hosted their first book swap. Students were asked to bring books they wished to donate to their lunch period where they received a ticket for each book. They were invited to donate any type and as many books as they wanted. Then a week later students traded their tickets for books. Abington Heights National Honor Society President, Amelia Oon, pitched the idea of the book swap. The goal: to get students more involved and reading more, as well as to donate as many books as possible to the Abington Community Library. All books remaining were donated to the Abington Community Library. “There are a decent amount of books, but we are looking for more. It’s a good opportunity for free books,” said Kasey Feather, National Honor Society member. The National Honor Society at Abington Heights High School also actively participates in other events for their school and community. Events have included organizing craft fairs, wrapping gifts and serving as

ushers for concerts and musicals. The National Honor Society is a high school academic society recognized nationwide. Students are able to be inducted into the National Honor Society during their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school if they meet the requirement of having a cumulative scholastic average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), or the equivalent standard of excellence. Mrs. Antonio and Mrs. Lovett moderate the National Honor Society at Abington Heights High School. “I know personally, before I joined NHS, I wasn’t active in the community. But now I get to meet new people and do a lot of volunteering,” said Feather, Abington Heights senior.

Allied employee earns VP title Karen Kearney was recently promoted to Vice President of Inpatient Rehabilitation, Allied Services Integrated Health System. Kearney started her career as a social worker at Heinz Rehab Hospital when it was founded in 1982, and most recently served as Assistant Vice President of Hospital Operations at Heinz Rehab. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Penn State University in 1981, and her Master’s Degree from Marywood University the following year. Kearney lives in Scranton with her husband Kerry, and children Kerry Jr. and Chelsea.

CLARKS GREEN- The Abington Council of Governments held its monthly meeting, Dec. 6 at the Clarks Green Borough Building. Len Gorney of the South Abington Planning Commission announced that due to sewer work, the South Abington Community Park will be closed from approximately mid-June until mid-August. He explained that the project entails replacing pumping stations with gravity feed lines, as well as other repairs. The walking trail will be open, however the parking lot will not be available. He stated that the recreation board is, “using this as an opportunity to see what improvements can be made. It’ll be back better than ever.” Bill White, the Waverly Township Manger mentioned that they are having difficulty adding the words Waverly Township to their addresses through the Post Office to enable emergency responders to better find residents. Several Waverly Township residents currently have Clarks Summit mailing addresses. In Clarks Summit news, Herman Johnson reported that plans were unveiled for a proposed new CVS store where the Valero gas station currently is located. The CVS on 100 South Abington Rd. will close and move to the new location, he said.

In addition to its lineup of classes, the art studio will host art-themed birthday parties. For example, children can stage a Victorian tea party or learn how to draw super heroes with a cartooningthemed party, she said. The studio, which opened in June of this year, will hold classes and private lessons for children of all ages with an emphasis on young children. “Primarily I teach children ages four and up for art lessons. We are a children’s art school,” Lombardi said, noting that in a year she hopes to expand to all age groups. The art teacher said the studio’s niche is sustainable art. During classes, Lombardi shows her students how to repurpose objects ordinarily considered refuse into art. In the past, Lombardi’s students have converted old bottle caps into vibrant mosaics, which adorned the exterior of her studio. In the new space, decorative lights made of water bottles fashioned into flowers hang in the front window. “All of my window displays are going to be recycled,” she said. Although the school primarily caters to children, it holds a ladies’ night out, where women can gather and relax while creating some art. Quickly moving on to various Instamatics, an old Leica D, and finally Japanese 35mm SLRs, Stovall explored different aspects of black and white photography, becoming

adept at all kinds of darkroom work by the time he entered high school. He was introduced to the view camera at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the early 1970s and eventually moved on to large format color transparency in a realism-based vision, which he still practices today. At the French Toast Breakfast, we put in a lot of work to make sure everything runs smoothly. The scouts spend hours selling the tickets, setting up the night before and operating the breakfast. Pivirotto Pivirotto was named MidAtlantic Regional Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) after leading the Royals to a 17-3-2 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Pivirotto guided the Royals to three NCAA Tournament victories and their first appearance in the Elite Eight since 1983, when Scranton made the last of four straight Final Four appearances. Rachel Smertz, another sophomore, led the team in the opening win over Dallas with two individual and two relay wins. Smertz was on the regional championship 200 medley relay team while adding, a silver and two bronze medals. Senior Kasey Feather, juniors Krista Brickel, Annie Gromelski and Chloe Sweeney and sophomore Morgan Muller also finished in the top six in the regional meet in at least one event last season. Muller was on first- and secondplace relay teams and finished in the top seven in two individual events. Other returnees are seniors Kristie Furlosi and Maria Gibson, junior Siobhan Cahill and sophomores Hannah Conahan, Abby McLane, Jessa Sablan and Mia Caputo. Gualtieri, Furlosi, Muller and Sweeney all joined Smertz by swimming on two first-place relay teams while Feather and freshman Elisa Selznick were on one each in the opener. Furlosi and Sweeney also had a first and a second as individuals while Muller and Gualtieri had two seconds. AnnieGromelski won the diving. Selznick and junior Leila Cappelano-Farber lead the list of 11 newcomers for Mary Gromelski, who is in her fifth season as Abington Heights head coach and her 29th year overall coaching swimming. Seniors Jason Kohn and Matt Bruzzano are back after scoring points with top-12 finishes in four events each in last season’s regional meet. Juniors Luke Fazio and Walker Kay are among the best of the rest, along with senior Pat Conahan and sophomore Noah Shapiro. Kay and Fazio were part of the only winning relay in the opening loss to Dallas while also adding secondplace individual finishes. Bruzzano and Conahan were also on the relay while Kohn had a second-place individual finish. Senior Matt Pettinato, Tom Jubon and Sean Albright and juniors Sam Vale and Dan Stevens are among the other returnees. Almost half of the roster is newcomers. Brendan Conahan and diver Collin Florey could be the best of that group. “I’m honored to be my high school’s swimming coach,” Lempicky said. “I think there’s a lot I can teach them.” Lempicky will try to help the Comets improve after going 3-4 in the division last season and placing sixth of nine teams in the Class AAA regional.

OBITUARY Daniel Thomas Fogarty December 3, 2012

Daniel Thomas Fogarty, 79, of Clarks Summit died Monday morning, Dec. 3, at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. His wife was the former Virginia E. Lachmann, who also died Monday morning. The couple had been married for 57years. Born in Manhattan N.Y., he was the son of the late Daniel T. and Mary Cannon Fogarty. He was a graduate of Bogota High School in Bogota, N.J. and was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving on the USS Macon. Prior to his retirement he was employed as traffic manager for Sandvik Steel Co. Daniel and his wife Virginia were both founding members of the Sandvik Retiree Association. He was also a member of the Abington Memorial VFW Post 7069. Daniel was a loving father, grandfather and especially a wonderful husband who such great care of his wife during her illness. Surviving is a son Kevin, Clarks Summit; four daughters, Keren Ann Miller, and husband Jeff, Jessup; Kelly Weaver, and husband Kenneth, Mountain Top; Kathy Fogarty, Clarks Summit and Linda Durso, and husband Mike, Waymart; eight grandchildren Devon and Daniel Fogarty, Alyssa and Lindsay Miller, Brittany Zeunges, Gabrielle, Brooke and Mikey Durso, one great- granddaughter Hailey Zeunges, two nephews Stephen and Jeffery Fogarty and one niece Donna McLaughlin.
