Mimi Cutler, owner, Cutler and Company Antiques, described the town of Fleetville as a destination since the1950s for people interested in antiques. Cutler and friend, Dana Oliver, Ambience Wallcovering, have recently joined forces to help their customers create an environment of warmth and comfort. “We are a great complement to one another,” said Cutler, who has been operating an antiques business in Fleetville since1981. “Fleetville has a certain draw to it and it relates to antique activity. There are seven lakes you can walk to from that main intersection. It creates a flow here and it really works well…” she said. At her shop located on Route 407, Fleetville, Cutler has a diverse and eclectic mix of furniture and accessories and architectural and garden antiques. “That line (architectural and garden) offers people a lot of flexibility in terms of being able to bring the outdoors in, which is really quite fashionable these days. The iron and stone are organic and earthy,” said Cutler. For more information, call 570.945.3747 or email mimicutler6@gmail.com. Oliver, who owned a wallpaper business for six years and prior to that was a wallpaper installer, offers her residential and commercial customers approximately10 different brands of wallpaper that range from affordable to high end, in addition to wallpaper for children, an assortment of area rugs and window treatments and shades. “I carry brands of wallpaper ranging from contemporary to Victorian,” said Oliver. “These days you can be really eclectic about what you’re doing to your home. You can bring in old pieces and you can mix it with contemporary designs on your walls. Anything goes,” said Oliver. She said one source from whom she draws inspiration and motivation is President Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In a 2008 conference of the Relief Society, the Church’s women’s organization, he referred to “the desire to create” as “one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul,” counseling that “as you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you.” It was with that aspiration Lord set upon the task that led to her awardwinning creations. Lord said her early interest in sewing was sparked by her mother, who sewed dresses for her and her three sisters, and stories of her early pioneer ancestors, who knew all there was to know about running a home. “I loved coming home from school seeing a new dress hanging up over the door where my mother was sewing,” she said. “I was eager to learn myself, and produced my first clumsily constructed dress in the eighth grade.” Although she described that first dress as a “disaster,” she said once she began taking lessons, her sewing dramatically improved. She recalled a few more of Presi-

dent Uchtdorf’s suggestions, which proved true in her experience: “if you feel incapable of creating, start small” and “don’t let the fear of failure discourage you.” “While I truly did have to start small, part of my satisfaction in sewing comes from the fact that I have persisted through enough disasters to learn how to create beautiful clothing,” she said. “Sewing can look simple but it requires a lot of eye-hand coordination and the skills come only with good instruction and practice. The ones who persist in the face of early klutziness are those who eventually get to mastery.” “Another source of satisfaction,” she continued, “is that sewing has con-

nected me to many great women – a favorite aunt who helped me cut out my first dress, my mother’s friend who started me quilting, great teachers at the Martha Pullen School of Fashion Art, and a dear friend in Atlanta who taught me a wide range of quilting skills. I can literally feel their hands on mine when I work and I am appreciative of their love, skills and willingness to teach me.” Lord’s advice to those wishing to learn to sew is, “Don’t give up, and learn how to unpick your work…You have a desire, go take lessons, stick at it and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” Ken Lord contributed to this story.

ueen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Mozart’s “Requiem.” John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Schubert’s “Dona Nobis Pacem.” These seemingly disparate pieces become complementary choral works at the hands of music director Susan Kelly. The music educator, who teaches at Abington Heights and conducts for the Choral Society of Northeast Pennsylvania, recently completed a doctoral degree in choral conducting from the University of South Carolina. She has her sights set on putting all of her energy back into musical endeavors. Kelly, who sings in local a capella ensemble, Lyric Consort, and serves as the music director at First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, has taught chorus to Abington Heights High School students since 2005. “Basically I just sing with kids all day,” she said of her job at the school. “I find that I have highly intelligent, motivated kids at my job.” Her students, as well as students of all ages from around the region,

can take their singing to a more advanced level by joining the Choral Society of NEPA, which will host auditions for its children and youth choirs Jan. 22. “Choral Society is a community group and you can sing with us from kindergarten through adulthood,” the music educator said. Singers in grades kindergarten through 12 can perform with others in their age groups. The singers, who rehearse weekly on Thursdays, are broken into four segments according to age. Children who begin from a young age are taught to read music as part of their education at the society, Kelly said. “Choral Society is really cool because kids can meet kids from other schools. And they can sing music at really high levels, as well as learn to read music,” she added. She added that the Choral Society performs challenging music often in foreign languages. “If you love singing and choral music and are willing to work hard on behalf of both of those accounts, then we love you and want you to be a part of our musical family,” the Choral Society’s website states.

The Choral Society will host auditions from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22 at Trinity Baptist Church, Monsey Avenue, Scranton. “We’re looking for potential, not achievement,” Kelly said of the auditions. “Anyone can sing. I’ll teach you to sing.” The Choral Society rehearses September through May with several concerts in between. For more information, see www.choralsociety.net

CLARKS SUMMIT- From the time she was a young child, Claire Reed, now 13, loved to draw. At age eight, she began taking art lessons from local artist Jennifer Brandon, who continues as her instructor today. Although Reed has been working with paint for only about a year, her first exhibit, consisting of six oil paintings, was displayed at Duffy’s Coffee House in Clarks Summit during November and December. Reed said she enjoyed this taste of the local art scene, which gave the community a chance to see her work. “I like people to see it,” she said. veteran actor from Clarks Summit said an upcoming twocharacter play will make viewers laugh and think. The Shawnee Playhouse will showcase their presentation through the Worthington Players of “Handy Dandy,” starring Clarks Summit native Robert Hughes and his award-winning co-star Suzanne Ford. Hughes described his character Judge Henry Pulaski as “a conservative, personally immoral, excatholic,” and Ford’s character Molly Egen as “a devout catholic who is radically zealous in her commitment to reform society.” Writer William Gibson’s “Handy Dandy” follows the development of an unusual friendship between an immoral court judge, Henry Pulaski and a free-spirited nun, Sister Molly Egan in the midst of their battle over nuclear politics. While Sister Molly tries to stick to her beliefs on preservation of the human race, she must attempt her battle to work around the law-abiding hands of Pulaski. He will do anything to keep the laws in order through this debate on nuclear policies pursued by civilized nations, even if that means sending her to jail. Actor Hughes said of the author, “He’s a highminded brilliant crafts-

The lifeless body of Richard Marshall on the floor of the office of Marshalls Development Limited in Londonis discovered after hours by cleaning lady, Mrs. Lily Piper. After she runs to tell her husband, the body is moved to a desk chair. Piper, terrified, runs to the police. The detective leading the investigation is her childhood friend from 30 years ago. When Piper returns with the police, the body disappears. Actor’s Circle presents “Busybody,” a comedy by Jack Popplewell and directed by Lou Bisignani of Scranton. The cast brings the audience back to England in 1964, when cops on a beat were called Bobbies or Peelers, named after the founder of the London Metropolitan Police, Sir Robert Peel. Detective Superintendent Harry Baxter does everything he can to remain professional, but is plagued not only by a cold but by busybody, Piper and a disappearing corpse. Piper will not allow the detective to do his job in peace. She constantly reminds him who he once was before his new career and tries to take over his investigation. “Oh, you moved up in the world, have you Harry? Forgotten your old friends, Harry?”

The employees of the late Richard Marshall attempt to solve the mystery of his death in ‘Busybody’. Shown, from left, are: Casey Thomas, Nicole Lopez-Isa, Janet Loewe.

said Piper, played by Janet Loewe of Clarks Summit. The mystery murder comedy begins Jan. 24 to 27 and Feb. 1 to 3 at 1256 Providence Rd. Tickets are $8 on opening night. Any other evening, tickets are: $12 general admission, $10 seniors, $8 students. Thursday to Saturday the play begins at 8 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m. For reservations, call 342.9707. Loewe describes Piper as the star witness. The detective does not want to admit to having known her. And her every action seems to frustrate him and force him to make newbie mistakes such as ruining fingerprints on the murder weapon. He cannot make her go away, because she’s the only witness. Piper takes it upon herself to interrogate suspects when she thinks she can do a better job, and even finds several pieces of evidence that the distraught detective misses. Bisignani welcomes people of all ages, although some of the jokes and funny bits may be difficult for young children to understand. “Come enjoy an evening of fun and mystery. I bet you won’t figure out who did it,” Loewe said.

O’Neill also addressed the allegation that the township bears ill will toward members of the military. “Absolutely false,” he said. “Many members of my family, including my father, were in the military. At the same time this [the events surrounding the case] was going on, Chief [Robert] Gerrity’s son was a decorated veteran serving overseas numerous times.” “We expect the same results

At a board of supervisors meeting May 10, 2010, the board, at the recommendation of Police Chief Robert Gerrity, adopted a resolution terminating Dubiak’s employment with the township. Dubiak was terminated because of “multiple acts of insubordination as well as neglect and violation of his official duties,” according to a copy of the minutes from that meeting. Dubiak is seeking reinstatement of his position and compensation for lost wages and benefits he may have received had he remained on the force, as well as other damages.

It kind of looked like an amphitheatre. We figured it was where they held those services.” One escaped slave who came to call Waverly home built his home adjacent to the church. His house, just steps from the church, gave him easy access to what he loved most: worship. Lott Norris arrived via Pottsville after escaping from a plantation in Burgettstown, Md., according to “This Is Waverly.” In Pottsville, he found work, married and raised a child. One evening, he came home to his wife who frantically told him that they’d

had an unwelcome visitor that day. His wife confirmed his worst fears, that the man was Norris’ former owner, referred to as “Old Marse.” Norris ran, under cover of night, not stopping until he found Waverly. There he sought employment and sent for his family. But it was not long before “Old Marse” found him again. This time, Norris didn’t have to run. “Old Marse” was driven out of Waverly by a group of armed farmers. Many ex-slaves who settled in Waverly volunteered to fight in the Civil War and only a few returned afterward. By the early 1900s, the older residents had died and a younger generation left to seek work in larger cities. The church was sold and began its life as a private residence in 1926.
