Defying gravity: Teen astounds the world SuSAn DEnnEy
Dallas Post Correspondent
It’s easy to forget to breathe when watching Wake Schepman skate. He defies gravity as he flies over ramps and twists in the air. His favorite stunt is a trick called a flat spin 540. It’s an unbelievable sideways backflip with one and a half rotations. Wake, 16, of Hunlock Creek, is a phenomenon in the world
of inline skating, also known as Rollerblading. He’s a likeable and humble high school student who enjoys Boy Scouting and church activities. He has won many competitions and is the only teen ranked in the top 10 inline skaters in the world. “The biggest accomplishment I have had was this last February,” he said. “I competed in the biggest Rollerblading com-
petition in North America called the Bittercold Showdown. I won third place. First place went to a man from Australia and second place went to a man from France.” The Bittercold Showdown was held in Royal Oak, Michigan and drew the best inline skaters from around the globe. Wake’s mom, April, said the family has been in the Back Mountain area for four years.
She said the winters here are a challenge for her son’s skating because one of his parents must drive him to the closest indoor skating park if the weather is bad. In good weather, Wake practices on the backyard ramp his dad, Wes, created for him. April used to be afraid when Wake first started skating at age 5. See GRAvITy | 10

Festivities began at 10 a.m. and concluded at 4 p.m. The Wyoming County United Way held its annual Duck Derby. Artists from the Endless Mountain Council of the Arts exhibited paintings.

Nicole Chipego wants to play it forward. When Chipego heard about the devastation caused by tornadoes in Oklahoma in early June, she knew she wanted to help children whose lives were turned upside down by the storm. So she began planning an adult softball tournament to benefit the Moore,
Oklahoma Little League. The two-day Field of Dreams Co-Ed Softball Tournament will be held Labor Day weekend and proceeds from the entry fees and raffle ticket sales will all benefit the Little League organization in Oklahoma. “It’s important when kids love something, that they’re able to keep playing, especially when there is chaos going on,” she said. “It gives kids an outlet.” The 32-year-old mom and softball enthusiast of Noxen knows firsthand the important role sports can play in the lives of children. After all, she’s been playing softball on local teams

And my whole family played - my mom, my dad and my three sisters.” The Lake-Lehman graduate played softball for her high school team,
winning awards for her prowess on the field. She also had an opportunity to play in the National Pro Fastpitch Professional Women’s Softball League for the New york/ New Jersey Juggernaut in the early 2000s. “[I] got invited to
play,” said Chipego. “It was a two-day tryout with 150 girls playing each day. They picked 20 girls out of all of them.” But now Chipego has traded in her pro status to play on two local teams and coach her daughter, 5-year-old Hannah, through her first T-Ball season with the Badgers, part of the Bob Horlacher League. “Hannah also comes with me to my games, and I like to keep involved in the benefit tournaments,” she said. Sarah Stacey starts All-Star game on bench TOM rOBINSON For The Dallas Post
Sarah Stacey found herself in an unfamiliar situation for the Robert L. Dolbear Senior Girls All-Star Softball Game. Stacey started the game on the bench, something she never did during her fouryear career at Lake-Lehman. “She was a starter since her freshman year and played every single inning of every game,” Lake-Lehman coach Wayne Oplinger said. “We’re naming an award after her, the Sarah Stacey Ironwoman Award.” Oplinger said the award will recognize a player annually for leadership and dedication to the team. Stacey received the award, which includes a small scholarship, from the Lake-Lehman Softball Booster Club. Stacey did her best to provide leadership to a struggling West team in the all-star game for recent graduates from Wyoming Valley Conference teams. The East opened a 14-0 lead in the first 4 ½ innings of the nine-inning game, played June 21 at the W.W. Kubis Memorial Field in Dallas. Stacey singled in the sixth inning and came around to score one of two West runs in the inning on the way to cutting the final East margin of victory to 15-4. “I wasn’t used to it,” Stacey said of coming off the bench. The West team kept battling in what could have turned into a discouraging game. “The whole thing was fun,” Stacey said. By the time the game ended, six players on the West team had produced at least one hit. Five of those players came from Lake-Lehman, Dallas or Tunkhannock. Lake-Lehman had two of the game’s three starting outfielders. Brandie Brennan, who was captain along with Stacey, was in left field. Vicky Cadwalder, who provided the game-winning
Austin Finarelli’s double in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the game-winning hit as the Angels nipped the Giants, 9-8, to win the AAA championship in the Back Mountain Little League. The hit plated both Josiah Thomas and Marc Ramirez with the tying and winning runs, respectively. Starting off the scoring, Drew Lojewski had three RBI for the Angels on a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Marc Ramirez, Austin Finarelli and Nick Solinsky. In offensive support for the Angels, Marc Ramirez had two hits and scored two runs. Zack Chamberlain had a hit with two RBI and Josiah Thomas had two hits, two RBI and a run scored. After the Angels took a 7-0 lead, the Giants came roaring back and scored three runs in the fourth inning and then followed with three more in the fifth and two in the sixth. In the fourth, two of the runs came home when Will Youngman and Nick Nocito scored on a two-run triple by Kurtis Ryniec. In the fifth, Ethan Kruger hit a two-run double, scoring Blaise Napierowski and Nick Nocito. In the top of the sixth, Mitch Burgess had a clutch single, plating

both James McCabe and Mike Murray and giving the Giants an 8-7 lead. Offensive leaders for the Giants were Will Youngman, Kurtis Ryniec and Mike Murray, with each having two hits. The Giants pitching of Nick Nocito and Will Youngman and the Angels pitching of Marc Ramirez, Josh Noone and Austin Finarelli was excellent. In the field, the Giants’ Nathan Savignano took away a smash, no-doubt extra base hit from Angels’ Ethan Meuser in the third inning.

double in extra innings for the team’s only win of the season, started in right field. Cadwalder went 1-for-2. “Vicky worked so hard to make herself a great player,” Oplinger said of Cadwalder, pointing out that she led the division in doubles as a junior and hit multiple home runs this year. “She worked hard to make herself a better all-around hitter.” Brennan went 0-for-1. Taylor Baker represented Dallas and was the starting pitcher for the West. Baker went 1-for-2 and scored a run. Tunkhannock had four players in the game, including Kristen Gilpin, who was selected as the West team’s Most Valuable Player.
“It was really unexpected,” Gilpin told The Times Leader after learning about the award in post-game public address announcements. Gilpin singled to drive in the team’s first run and finished 1-for-2. She also pitched the last four innings, controlling the East offense, which had been overpowering early with 16 hits in five innings. In the last four innings, Gilpin gave up just one run on two hits while striking out four and walking three. Emily Forba, Alicia Spudis and Jess Brennan also played from Tunkhannock. Forba went 1-for-2 and drove in a run. Spudis started as the West leadoff hitter and finished 0-for-3. Brennan was 0-for-2.
The Sun won the third/fourth grade championship in the Dallas Youth Basketball League. Members of the team are, from left, first row, Shauna Kern, Gianna Dickson, Sommer Zier-Norris, Mikayla Goldsmith. Gravity From page 1 “You become desensitized after a while,” she said. “I do still worry when he does tricks on the Mini-Mega ramp. It is a huge ramp and he gets going very fast.” Inline skating can be dangerous. Wake says his injuries so far have been minor, citing broken wrists as the most serious he’s experienced. There are obviously challenges in having a child so talented but April said one of the biggest challenges doesn’t apply in Wake’s case. “Any talented person can become proud,” she said. “Being humble comes naturally to Wake so that hasn’t
been too hard to reign in on. He is extremely thankful for his talents.” Wake will perform this summer at Dorney Park in Allentown. He has just signed on with All Wheel Sports, a performing group which includes inline skaters, skateboarders and bicycle stunt artists. A team from All Wheel Sports made the semi-finals in the seventh season of “America’s Got Talent” and Wake will perform with the group at the park when he is not traveling to competitions. Does he prefer competitions or performances? “I like both,” Wake said. “At competitions, I get to try new tricks and push my limits. I enjoy the competitive feeling and I perform well under

nicole Chipego, a former softball standout at lake-lehman High School, has more than the game on her mind. Chipego is planning a benefit softball game to aid tornado victims in oklahoma.
Forward From page 1 she spent time in nearby Norman when her father was working on natural gas and petroleum pipeline construction. “We lived there for a year, and my sisters went to the schools that were affected,” she said. Chipego can’t imagine life without sports and hopes to instill that same passion in her daughter. “I think participating in any type of team sport helps build good character and helps develop your decision making skills,” she said. “For me, it’s definitely helped me with
my people skills - I meet new people from all over. It also helps you feel like you’re a part of something bigger.”

At shows, everything is planned and practiced before. It gets a little repetitive after a while but I love to skate for the crowd.” April sees characteristics in Wake that have allowed him to excel. “He was blessed with wonderful personality traits that help him be this all-around great kid,” she said. “People like Wake
and he loves to meet and talk to people. He is a kind, happy, friendly, athletic person and has great leadership abilities. He does have a competitive nature and all of our kids have this type of internal drive, determination, I guess, that makes their interests not just interests but intense, focused dedication.” Wake would like more young people to get interested in inline skating and has advice for those who would like to skate. “You should always wear a helmet and protective knee and elbow pads because even the professional skaters fall,” he said. “If you can, go to a local skatepark and watch skaters; that helps you. If not, you can look up videos on YouTube.
Skate with a friend, too, or encourage your friends to skate with you.” Wake sees skating in his future but has other plans as well. “When I graduate, I want to attend college and study architecture,” he said. “ But I am always looking for new opportunities to help further my skating career and the rollerblading industry.”
