he 50th annual Luzerne County Fair will be running from September 5th-9th, on State Route 118 in Lehman Township. Our fair has come a long way over these fifty years. It has gone from things such as a parade, dog training, a horse show and a little league baseball game to S&S Amusement rides, food and live entertainment! Our fair is a reasonably priced event that is jam packed with fun, food and a surplus of memory making opportunities. It is a family friendly place, so bring your kids, parents, cousins, sisters, brothers, neighbors or anyone else you know that enjoys traditional, funfair activities. Once you pay the small price of $8 dollars ($4, for senior citizens and children under the age of 2 are free) and walk through the welcome sign you will embark on a night of experiences, laughs, joy and, hopefully, some over indulgence on all succulent and sweet foods! Wednesday: Looking for a mid week pick me up? Don’t feel like cooking dinner? Stop by the fair and enjoy some of the treats you can only get once a year; at the Luzerne County Fair! Bring the kids, and watch their eyes light up when they walk through the threshold and soak in the lights, sounds and smells that only a fair can offer! Win a teddy bear for your sweetheart or child; then let your kids test their luck at winning a gold fish! Take a walk through the fun house or a leisurely ride on the ferris wheel. Once you have your fill of the rides enjoy some Grotto pizza, or maybe some candied almonds (hopefully both!), and wash it all down with fresh, hand squeezed, lemonade. Then, why not pick up some extra treats and head down to the amphitheater at 7:30 and check out the musical talents of the Charlie Thomas’ Drifters! Charlie Thomas has been in showbiz for 50 years, making him the perfect asset and entertainment to celebrate the Luzerne County Fairs 50th anniversary! Thursday: If you’re looking to take the night off from all the foods or not keen on riding rides such as the Musik Express don’t worry, because our fair offers many other fantastic attractions! Have a stroll through the arts and crafts exhibits and take pride in how well educated and aware our youth is! Take some time to learn from all the interesting and informative displays 4-H members have worked hard to put together. Check out the local produce and take notice of the dignity and dedication that come from our local farmers. These displays provide a wonderful and rare opportunity to teach yourself and others about the agriculture our area is so well known for. When you’ve learned all you can, take a walk down to barn and visit the cows, chickens, rabbits and many other farm animals that are locally owned, raised and shown! Once finished there, if you enjoy the sound of country music and the vibe of old time Rock n’ Roll then be sure to keep an ear our for the night time entertainment, Tommy Guns will be playing from 7-8:30, and, as quoted, from the lead singer “...United together, we guarantee our fans a high energy.. high quality.. highly entertaining show”

Saturday: Do you have or know a spunky, fun and, of course, adorable little girl between the ages of 4-6? Why not stop out to the fairgrounds at noon and check out the Fair Princess competition! Not only can you see how sweet and beautiful all the little superstars are, but your own daughter may decide she wants to enter next year! If that’s not for you then dosie on out couple hours later, because at 2pm there will be Line Dancing happening on the community stage! You can either sit back and enjoy the show; or jump in the fun, and learn some new dance moves! When the session concludes hang up those dancing shoes, grab a snack and hang out for a while, because at 6pm in the Equine arena you can take in Dancing with Horses! Dressage is a beautiful display of strength and grace by both rider and horse, come and be mesmerized by the fluency and beauty in the simplistic and difficult tasks performed by these impeccably trained horses and riders! If simply watching the horses isn’t enough for you or your kids, not to worry, at 7:15 there will be an interactive session where kids can learn more about difficult dressage moves on foot! Also, they will have the opportunity to take photos with the horses! As if that isn’t enough excitement packed into a single day at 7:30 the one and only Jon “Bowzer” Bauman will be performing on stage! Where else will you be able to see Bowzer live for free! Sunday: At 3 on Sunday there will be events happening in the equine arena, the event list includes: a hay bale toss, egg toss, wheel barrel race and more! There are two age divisions for these events: 10 years and younger, and ages 11-18. These events are sponsored by H&R block, Dallas Office. CHOOSE A WASHER AND DRYER HOW TO ...

Choosing a washer

Basically, there are two types of washing machines – top loading and front loading. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Front loaders use less water and electricity, but usually cost more. But don’t let that be a deterent, said James Broda, owner of Rebennack’s Appliances in Kingston. “What kind of price tag can you put on an item that will pay for itself? “Top loaders use more water and more electricity, but for some people, it’s the only way to go. “People who have back problems can’t use the front loaders and see the top loader as the only possible choice,” Broda said. “Typically for a large family, front loaders will save more money because of the number of loads they’ll do,” he added. “Apartment residents and single people will do less laundry, so the top loader is your normal choice.” Capacity is a major consideration when selecting a washing machine. Broda advises customers to base this decision on the number of people in the household and the amount of wash that will be done. Some other things to consider are price and efficiency. For dryers, consumers should also pay attention to door size, what sensors are used to monitor moisture levels and temperatures and the interior capacity.

Select a Stove or Fireplace

T

hinking of purchasing a fireplace or stove to help ease winter heating woes this year? Aside from the comfy, cozy ambiance, a fireplace can help reduce your ever-rising home-heating costs and even add to the value of your home. Here are a few tips to get you on your way.

Early decisions Prior to shopping, it is a good idea to consider what type of fuel you would like to use. “Homeowners must decide if they would like to burn coal, wood, gas, wood pellets, or electric,” said Leonard DeLeur, owner of DeLeur’s Back to Basics fireplace and stove shop in Dallas. “Also, consider your storage capabilities for the fuel you select.” Next, you should determine where you want your fireplace located. That’s right, folks. You don’t need an existing masonry fireplace to get the look of one. A multitude of options is available today. It used to be that a fireplace only went in the family or living rooms Today’s technologically advanced fireplaces can be installed in bathrooms, bedrooms, studies, kitchens, and even mobile homes. Next consider the physical size of the room and specific desired location for the fireplace. Be sure you measure the size of the space. Remember to also consider the type of insulation you have in your home when deciding on the heat output (BTUs) you want from your fireplace. Which fireplace is right for you? To select the best fireplace for your home and your

needs, it is important to understand the pros and cons of each fuel type. A gas fireplace is typically the simplest to operate. You set the thermostat and forget it. When considering a wood fireplace, keep in mind, you are using wood. It isn’t as clean as gas. So, if you don’t mind a little work and a little cleanup, it provides wonderful heat. Wood pellets are a great alternative to the customary fireplace. There is not much fuss and muss, and no traditional chimney is needed.

Although it requires some effort, coal has been used for many years to heat home. It is a terrific way to reduce those high heating costs.

Fireplace vs freestanding stove Not every home has an existing fireplace and not every person has the budget or the desire for the

“traditional” fireplace look. Everyone does, however, want to save money on their home heating bills. But don’t worry, there are options available for everyone. A freestanding unit that can burn any of the aforementioned fuels can be installed almost anywhere. A professional hearth retailer is always happy to help you in your decision when selecting a fireplace or freestanding stove.

Mobile phones have become a part of the way we live, and families are faced with making decisions about how their children interact with them. AT&T Mobile Safety is our way of helping — it provided families with educational resources to help start the mobile safety conversation. Mobile phones have allowed families to be more connected than ever. But, we also have new issues that can’t be ignored – bullying, privacy, texting while driving and more. To better understand the most prevalent wireless safety issues for families, AT&T commissioned GfK for a national study with 1,000 parents and 500 children ages 8-17. The results show there’s an opportunity for more discussion between parents and children. Parents say they are worried about their family’s mobile safety. Kids’ experiences and activities tell us parents have a right to be concerned. Parents are searching for help: – 62 percent of parents are concerned that they are not able to fully monitor everything their child is doing and seeing on the phone. – 38 percent of kids say their parents have not talked to them about staying safe and secure when using the mobile phone. Kids are willing to accept rules: – 66 percent of kids have rules at home on their phone; 92 percent of these think the rules are fair – and this is consistent across age groups and types of phone (i.e., mobile phone versus smartphone). – 93 percent of kids have rules at school on how they can and cannot use their phone, so they are more likely to have school rules versus home rules. Sometimes parents and kids need a little safety net. Overcome the Fear and Experience the Joy of Adoption T here’s a new baby in your future. You know the feeling. It is a calling, a voice, a constant reminder that fills your heart. And you can’t stop it. It comes when you hear that song, or hold a baby, or see your nephew at t-ball. “Where do I go from here?”

Perhaps you have been trying to have a baby. Perhaps you have been through the pain and anxiety of fertility treatments. Or maybe you have had a calling towards adoption all your life. There is one thing I know... there is a child who needs a mom and a dad. And they have been waiting for you. There are many routes to adoption. You may seek a baby through a private adoption. Private adoptions are arranged by attorneys through legal agreements with expecting mothers. Or you may seek to adopt and older child who has had their parental rights terminated. The Pennsylvania Statewide Adoption Network has a gallery of hundreds of older children waiting for a family who are legally free to be adopted right now. Many people begin the adoption process through foster care. Babies or children are placed in their homes with the goal of adoption just after separation from their biological parents. Sometimes the

child stays with you. Sometimes the child is returned to their biological parents. There are ways to manage the risk. Specifically, learn all you can about the biological parents before taking a child. Misdemeanor criminal offenses, minor first time neglect or the presence of a strong extended family mean the child will likely be returned. A history of child removal or parental incarceration increases the odds the child will stay with you. Is adoption expensive? It is if you do a foreign adoption. Adopting children from other countries can cost $20,000 or more. Adoption can be free and provide you a stipend and free child health care for 18-years if you take a child from Northeastern Pennsylvania. We have hundreds of children right here /right now/ who need a mom or a dad. Perhaps your single and a little older. Trust me, there is a teenage boy or girl who needs you. There is a boy who needs to learn how to become a man --a gift only a father can give. There is a girl who needs to know how to become a mom. And sometimes children have experienced terrible things in their young life that make it better to be in the presence of just one parent. But you’re scared. You don’t know if you can handle having a child and then having it taken away. What about all the unknown health risks? What will your kids think if you bring in another child? What if something turns up later in life? Should I even tell them their adopted?

On the opposite page there is a listing of agencies that can help you sort through these questions. Call them. They offer training and information classes on a regular basis. I strongly recommend you attend a local adoption matching event. These meetings are free and bring together dozens of adoption agencies and hundreds of child profiles to one location. They are offered by Wilkes Barre Racing every spring and fall. Check their website to find out when the next event is scheduled. Talk to adopted and foster parents. Their first hand experience is priceless and infinitely more valuable than any course, text book or website. Finally -- and most importantly -- talk to people who were adopted. Their stories will help you understand what you are about to give to a child. The gift of a forever family. The gift of love, hope and a future. Adoption and foster care are not easy roads to travel. But the rewards are as countless as the days of a child’s life. Honestly, I can’t really tell you how to overcome the fear and experience the joy of adoption. All I know is that people don’t make babies. God does. And if He calls you to this (remember that little voice you keep hearing?). Answer Him. He will provide you the courage, strength, love and guidance needed to give at least one orphan in our valley a new and forever home.

Select your dream wedding reception location

ne of the first and most important things a bride and groom consider after getting engaged is finding their wedding reception venue. Once you’ve located the ideal spot, the rest of the wedding day details will fall into place easily. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind as you begin your search. A Roomy Fit While it may sound obvious, it is crucial to find a venue that will fit your guests and your setup needs comfortably. The space may look large upon your first visit if you are viewing the space while empty. Make sure to go back to the venue when they are setup for a wedding to ensure there is ample room. Oyster Weddings at Genetti’s boast the maximum amount of banquet space in NEPA. With 20,000 square feet available to guests, brides and grooms can feel free to have anywhere from 40-1,200 guests present at their special day. Great Spaces To make sure that your event flows smoothly and to maximize your enjoyment, make sure that you have the correct spaces for each segment of your night. For instance, cocktail hour is the first thing that your guests will experience. You would want to make sure that this area is inviting and starts off the night in the right way. When a guest enters an Oyster Wedding, after using the complimentary valet parking service, a server handing out the couple’s signature drinks welcomes them. They then enter Oyster Restaurant Dining room where they are serenaded by the sounds of our professional piano player. Guests also have the option of lounging in our outdoor space and grabbing a cocktail at the newly renovated pool cabana area. Generous gourmet food displays and white glove butler passed hors d’oeuvres are provided for guests during this time before they are ushered into the ballroom for dinner. Stress Less It has been said that a bride will make around 287 decisions during her planning process. It is very important to find a venue that offers a package that will include all of your needs and make your walk to the alter easy and stress free. The Oyster Wedding package is all-inclusive and our wedding team takes care of all of the details so you can enjoy your special day without worry. Linens, chair covers, lighting, lush centerpieces, gourmet cuisine, premium bar and even your wedding cake and desserts all come included. All you need is a white dress and a groom!

Reputation is Key You will want to find a venue that has a great reputation and track record for doing good business. Finding a venue you can trust with your big day will rely on many factors such as, how long they’ve been in business, seeing testimonials from other brides and grooms and ensuring that they have a knowledgeable & professional staff. Genetti’s has been the leading provider of hospitality services dedicated to exceeding guests’ expectations and values for decades. Oyster Weddings at Genetti’s is the newest concept developed by the Genetti team to bring the most upscale and unique weddings to the NEPA area. Professional Wedding & Event Planner Lindsay Bezick has been certified in both Wedding & Event Planning as well as Wedding & Event Design. The professional and personal service provided by the Oyster Wedding staff is what makes the planning process easy and your wedding reception truly exceptional. Eat, Drink & Be Merry When you think of the last wedding you went to, what do you remember? Most people would say the food. As palates become more particular and people are beginning to stray from cookie-cutter food selections at weddings, it is important to select a venue that has a menu that’s sure to impress. Oyster Weddings boast a delectable Five-Course meal as well as the option for a Stations menu. Both come with specialty hors d’oeuvres, fondant or buttercream wedding cake, flaming dessert show, Viennese dessert table and international coffee station. The restaurant style service approach ensures guests are served simultaneously and tableside service attends to guests each and every need. When guests get thirsty, they can enjoy the premium open bar featuring a handcrafted beer bar, martini bar and the couple’s signature drinks. A quote from a recent Oyster Wedding guest and food critic sums it all up, “ Brides and grooms, have your reception here. Appetizers, fresh fruit, chocolate fondue, crabmeat cocktail and the best soup and salad I have ever had. The main course was filet & lobster, mmm mmm wow!! Flaming bananas foster, dessert bar and coffee bar. Thank you Oyster for a wonderful night!” Live Your Dream…. This is your wedding day, the day you’ve been waiting for your whole life. Make sure that you find a venue that is willing to carry out your dream and support your vision. Oyster Weddings at Genetti’s is dedicated to working together with couples to ensure that your dream comes true and every aspect of what you want is incorporated into your wedding. From the menu selection to the décor and color scheme our weddings are truly unique to each and every bride and groom. Oyster wedding couple Mark and Carlene said “The reception was way over my expectations. It looked stunning, the food was outstanding and the service was exceptional. I was told several times this was the most beautiful and elegant reception my guests have ever been to. It was everything we wanted and more for our special day.”

Cross Valley FCU offers ways to get you started today!

he harsh reality of a struggling economy, may leave you wondering how we can rally to improve the financial lives of our children and grandchildren. While the big picture may initially seem intimidating, there are resources available to help you. Some financial institutions are making a difference and are proof that together, we can get kids savvy about saving for their futures. Cross Valley Federal Credit Union is one organization that remains committed to teaching these valuable lessons. “At Cross Valley FCU we believe in the value of financial literacy, and remain dedicated to educating the students in our community about the importance of saving early, and instilling in them strong money management skills,” said Colleen Phillips, V.P. of Marketing, Cross Valley FCU. The statistics are startling: • A recent survey by Teenage Research Unlimited found that over 20% of teenagers have their own credit cards or access to a parent’s cards, and 14% have debit cards. These teens spend 98% of their money, rather than saving it, which shows the need for more financial education. • In 2007, a survey on teens and money reported that only 45% of teens know how to use a credit card, while just 26% understood credit-card interest and fees. (Source: Charles Schwab) • The average college undergrad carries $3,173 in credit card debt, the highest since the study began. The average senior will graduate with $4,100 in credit card debt, up 41% from the same study conducted in 2004. (Source: Sallie Mae, “How Undergraduate Students Use Credit Cards: Sallie Mae’s National Study of Usage Rates and Trends 2009”) At Cross Valley FCU we believe it’s never too early to start planning for the future. Because there is proof that one person at a time, one class at a time, one credit union at a time – we can help teach our youth valuable lessons. And, getting started is as easy as 1, 2, 3…

1).Contact your financial institution:

St. Nicholas- St. Mary’s School 8th graders are proof that when teachers, students, and credit unions work together the possibilities are endless. Students at this school spent a half an hour each Thursday for ten weeks this past spring taking part in a financial literacy class being offered by Cross Valley FCU. The students learned about setting SMART goals, achieving them, and later even about helping mom and dad balance their ledgers. Cross Valley FCU provides free financial education programs such as this one, through the National Endowment for Financial Education’s (NEFE) High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP). This program gives students the tools they need to apply to their everyday lives. The materials help students learn more about: • Creating their own financial plan • Creating their own budget • Selecting strategies to use in handling credit and managing their debt • Demonstrating how to use various financial services • Examining how their choice of career and lifestyle will affect their financial future and much more.

3) Recognize real world scenarios and share them with your child/grandchild:

Take advantage of a fun afternoon in the kitchen baking and watch as fractions instantly become significant when halving a recipe for chocolate chips cookies. And, don’t forget about the lessons that present themselves when back to school shopping. You’ll be amazed how percentages make all of the difference when shopping for new clothes at 50% off, and the standard grocery checkout line question of ‘credit or debit?’ presents the perfect introduction for a parent to take the time to explain the difference to a curious young mind. Another great way to introduce youngsters is by working on fun activities that keep them interested. America’s Credit Unions website http://www.creditunion.coop/thriveby5/ offers several fun activities, tips and even a listing of books that you can begin to work on today to keep your child engaged. The National Credit Union Association (NCUA) charted the Cross Valley FCU in 1969. To serve over 22, 500 members the credit union has nine different locations in Wilkes- Barre, Forty Fort, Dallas, Pittston, West Scranton, Mountaintop and Hazleton. Currently credit union membership is available to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Luzerne, Lackawanna or Wyoming Counties. If you are interested in receiving more information about Cross Valley Federal Credit Union’s Youth Programs or want to know how your elementary school or high school can take advantage of free financial literacy materials, contact Cross Valley FCU today (570) 823-6836 ext. 1071 or email jhouseknecht@crossvalleyfcu.org.

PAGE 23

Youth Programs - Cross Valley FCU offers two financial literacy groups: Scottie Savers and the Executive Student Program (ESP). Both are designed to start children, teens and young adults off on the right road to financial responsibility and offer unique ways to get them excited early about money management through added benefits that include the Annual Scottie Saver Challenge and Youth Day Carnival, as well as the Good Student Rewards & Scholarship Programs. Financial Fundamentals Presentations - In addition to these programs Cross Valley FCU is always eager to visit schools to talk about financial fundamentals. Depending on the age group, even Scottie Saver himself sometimes tags along. Group Tours – Cross Valley FCU hosts group tours throughout the year for organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts looking to earn their next badge. “It’s a great chance for students to learn fun facts about currency and see how we operate on a daily basis,” added Phillips.

2).Make it part of the curriculum:

CHOOSE A CABLE COMPANY

e no longer rely on “rabbit ears” or large metal antennas on rooftops - some with automatic rotators - for better television reception. Instead, much of our programming comes to us via a number of cable TV companies. Which company is best for you? It depends on a lot of things.

Where you live Although “exclusivity rules” went by the boards in 1993, it’s still pretty much a given that only one cable company offers service to a given area. The reason for that is pretty basic economics. Cable infrastructure isn’t cheap -- one industry executive suggested it might cost $20,000 to lay one mile of cable; if you have only 50 customers along that mile, you’ll never recoup your investment. That’s why it’s hard for an upstart to become profitable in an area that’s already locked up by another player. Although you may not have many choices in cable providers, offerings will give you plenty to think about.

Channels, Channels Everywhere When families got “cableized” in the late ‘60s, they were astounded to see that every dial position -- all the way up to channel 13! -- had a clear, crisp picture. Now you’ll find hundreds of channels, but not everyone will be automatically available to you. Most providers offer “tiers” of programming in which your viewing options grow as you climb the tiers. But when you select a particular package, your viewing choices are limited to the contents of that package. Digital cable television can expand your horizons even more. Picture or sound are excellent, but it is not true digital television. DTV requires digital cameras - working at a much higher resolution than analog cameras, digital transmission and a digital display that offers a much sharper picture than standard analog sets.

Premium Packages and Music Channels The days of choosing just Cinemax and/or HBO are long gone. Each of those premium services offer multiple versions, targeted to very specfic audiences. Don’t confuse music channels with radio, and don’t think it’s five or six videos in endless rotation. Cable music channels accommodate just about everyone’s taste, playing everything from big band, smooth jazz and reggae, through country hits, heavy metal and light opera, to electronica, old-school hip hop and “solid gold oldies.” All of them come to you 24/7, in full stereo, and completely commercial free. Title/artist info is displayed on-screen (Boring to watch, but great to listen to!)

The Top Five Things You Should Know 1. Cable companies tend to be dominant in certain areas due to economics; laying cable infrastructure isn’t cheap. Depending on where you live, you may not have a lot of choices about which company to choose. 2. Cable companies offer packages of channels targeted to particular interests. You can choose the kind of package that best suits your needs as a viewer. 3. On-demand programming lets you watch a program when you want to see it, and you can “control the show” as you can with a video. 4. High-definition TV offers exceptional clarity of image and quality of sound. Check with your cable company for availability -- it’s not yet available everywhere for everyone. 5. Some cable companies “bundle” services, offering TV, telephone and Internet service all from one provider. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW Where you live may determine which cable company will provide your cable service. Most providers offer “tiers” of programming with packages designed for certain viewing interests. New services include on-demand programming and high-definition TV Not all cable companies provide all services, and some companies bundle Internet and phone with cable for cost savings. Check them out before you sign up.

PAGE 29

New Services Not To Miss “Today cable TV offers a variety of service choices like digi-

tal and high-definition, and hundreds of channels are available-many showing programming targeted to a specific audience such as sports, lifestyle or entertainment,” says Andrea Visnosky, RCN marketing manager. “With today’s busy lifestyles, consumers want the flexibility to view their favorite shows whenever they want, on their schedules,” continues Visnosky. “Video ON DEMAND and digital video recorder service allow you to control your TV viewing. With VOD, you are able to choose a program from a menu of hundreds of titles, order it-- in many cases at no charge -- and watch it right away without waiting for it to air at a scheduled time. There are movies, local programs, sports features, kids programs and much more available to choose from.” With HDTV images are incredibly crisp and the sound utilizes DolbyR digital surround for top-notch radio. Not all providers offer all of these services, so if they are important, you should go with the company that does offer them. If cost is a concern, choose a provider that can give discounts when cable TV is bundled with other services, like Internet and phone.

Choose An Inpatient Rehab Facility

S

electing a reliable, clinically effective rehabilitation team is crucial to achieving goal-oriented results. Your choice will likely be the significant factor in determining your return to a meaningful lifestyle. So while location is always important in determining where you would like to go, there are other factors to consider as well. Rehabilitation is an important part of the recovery process following an illness, injury or operation. The combined efforts of physical, occupational and speech therapies with rehabilitative nursing, social services, dietary services and sound medical direction provide the necessary components and support for successful rehabilitation.

Speech Therapy • Communication skills assessment and retraining • Memory skills assessment and retraining • Swallowing difficulties assessment and treatment • Communication related to hearing loss • Alternative communication instruction In addition, you will want to ensure the therapy members are full-time licensed staff therapists and therapist assistants employed by the rehabilitation facility. Many therapists have specialized areas of expertise – be sure to ask for their educational background. Having therapy available in the evenings and weekends is a plus for the patients as well. The therapy team will work with the other departments in the rehabilitation facility to determine appropriate goals for each patient, and to outline the steps needed to achieve those goals. Their expertise and experience will help you understand what to expect during a stay at the rehabilitation facility. So be sure to ask questions and tour the inpatient rehabilitation facility you are considering for your loved one. The most important thing is to find a facility with a rehabilitation team that will meet your needs, preferences and standards. So make sure you determine what your requirements are prior to beginning your search. Some rehabilitation facilities will offer the option to prebook a stay with them. If you are planning your surgery, then why not think about planning your recovery as well. Manor Care boasts an expansive state of the art gym, outdoor rehab therapeutic walking trail, private dining room, internet cafe and gracious common area. While Manor Care still offers long-term care, its post-acute unit is a separate wing of the facility. Gary Malia, Manor Care Administrator, invites the community to stop by and tour their facility.

Remodel Your Kitchen

hen remodeling your kitchen, there are many factors to first consider before the process begins. At Cabinets, Counters and More, the owner, John Mosca, and his experienced staff will be able to help guide you through the process to guarantee that you will have a kitchen that you’ll love. The first criteria to determine when remodeling your kitchen is how much you want to spend. The budget you set will ultimately determine your selections, the overall appearance and functionality. The price is determined by the door styles, colors, brands and features of cabinets you pick. The second criteria is to figure out what style and color you are looking for. Do you want a contemporary look, elegant look, traditional look or something different? Do you want a full overlay or a partial overlay? Once this is determined, you can decide what door style and color you prefer. The third criteria to determine is whether you want a redesign of the whole kitchen or do you just want to replace what you already have. There are more questions that you may want to ask yourself to help determine which route you want to go. Do you have a soffit that you may want to remove? Is new flooring something that you are also considering to change the look and feel of your current kitchen? A common problem that many people have is that the colors, designs and features that they are attracted to are usually the more expensive looks. The simple truth is that when you are making comparisons, the more attractive it is, the more expensive it usually is.

Fortunately, it is possible to achieve the overall “High End” look without blowing away your budget. You will be able to do this by choosing from plenty of cabinet lines including the “Value Selection Series”. These are still quality cabinet lines are but there will be limitations in colors, sizes and designs. Cabinets, Counters and More also offers a wide variety of counter tops for your new kitchen. If you decide to keep the existing cabinets, we also offer counter top replacement. There is a wide range of counter tops to choose. The most popular counter tops are laminate, granite, Corian, and quartz. This will change the look of the room without doing a complete remodel. Cabinets, Counters and More now offers the convenience of a spray on counter tops to help keep your cost down. They can also spray the walls and the floor with a durable “Acrylic Urethane” coating. The room can be redone with considerable savings. If you are planning to remodel your kitchen, consult with John Mosca or his staff at Cabinets, Counters and More. They have excellent experience as skilled professional kitchen designers. The showroom is located on Route 309 across from Wegman’s at 310 Wilkes-Barre Twp. Blvd., Wilkes-Barre Twp., in the Georgetown Plaza. The phone number is 570-4304396 and 570-262-3043. The showroom hours are Monday through Thursday from 9am to 7pm; Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. Other hours are available by appointment. Due to their expertise and many years of experience, they are sure to make you a satisfied customer.

According to Robert Asby MS CCC/A, an audiologist with over 45 years of experience, the type and size of your hearing aid depends on the severity and type of your hearing loss. Mild hearing loss may be served by a very small instrument that rests inside the ear canal or discretely behind the ear. Severe hearing loss may require a slightly larger behind-the-ear style hearing aid. This device is large enough to contain the components and power to help those with a more severe hearing loss.

Make Progress W

hether it’s a home project, large industrial installation or back-up power generator, progress is what you want to see. From the first call to the last. And everywhere in between. Believe it or not, there is a contractor who knows how to bring it. Reinventing the wheel since 1974, this company makes their success, yours. Arc Electric started in a local garage as a one-man operation doing industrial/commercial electrical construction in the Hazleton area. The company grew to include electrician Robert (Bob) Judd, who married the owner’s daughter, Elaine, and then purchased the company in 1981. With Bob steering the course, there was no stopping progress. Business really started to take off as Bob’s innovative thinking and focus on unparalleled customer service became well known. He grew the business to include residential work, and was a force to reckon with in the business and local communities, volunteering on too many committees and boards to keep track of. His commitment to the community built a rock solid foundation for progress to stand on. But still, something was missing… another dynamo to manage the ever-expanding office.

Administrator and Trainer, later adding Estimator and Project Manager to his responsibilities. This freed up Bob’s time to grow the business even more. By 2006, they were once again reinventing themselves by launching a division totally dedicated to residential customers with on-call, on-time, 112%guaranteed satisfaction. The Wire Guys by Arc Electric quickly became known as the most responsive, hard-working, reliable electricians in the Hazleton area.

In 2008, Generators moved back to the front seat as Arc became an Elite Generac Dealer, opening a new division concentrated on back-up power. With Certified installers, up-front pricing and Wire Guy guarantees, it took no time for them to be recognized as the #1 Generac Dealer in Pennsylvania, serving homeowners all over Northeastern PA and the Poconos. In 2009, they were recognized as the Business of the Year by the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce. In late 2011, Bob passed away unexpectedly and Elaine grabbed the company steering wheel as President and CEO. Her son, Greg, also joined the race and is now helping steer the company’s future as Vice President and COO. With a backseat full of superb electricians and other excellent staff, Arc Electric’s momentum continues. If you make the right call on your next project, you too will see progress…delivered.

In 1996, Bob and his wife, Elaine, became partners. This powerhouse partnership took the company to even higher levels of success. Elaine started as Secretary/Treasurer, CFO and Office Manager; establishing many of the company policies and management strategies that have helped Arc become the leading electrical contractor in the Hazleton area. Her belief in putting family first is a priority that made a huge difference. Flexible work schedules attracted exceptional employees with the same strong values and integrity. Better working conditions, personnel/safety manuals, formal job descriptions and evaluation forms greatly improved performance and safety. New accounting software enhanced accuracy and efficiency in all aspects of the business. Truly reinventing the back wheels of this business, Elaine helped turn a growing construction company into a well-oiled electrical machine.

PAGE 37

Never ones to let a resource sit on the sidelines, Bob & Elaine’s son, Greg Judd, joined the company in 2000 as IT

Once the back end was up to speed, the front end got a makeover too. In the late 90’s, Arc became a Certified Dealer for Generac generators, offering a full inventory of automatic standby generators for the home and business, as well as portables for camping and other outdoor power needs. Services include installation and warranty service as well as repair.

SELECT A LEAF BLOWER

t’s a lazy Saturday afternoon in late fall. You’re ready to settle in for a day of college football action when you’re not-sogently reminded that the leaves need to be picked up. Ouch! If you owned a leaf blower, you could be back on the couch by halftime. But there are some things to consider before running to the store. “Before purchasing a blower, evaluate your needs,” says Larry Hilbert of Hilbert’s Welding & Equipment in Dallas. “What do you plan to do with the blower and how much area are you planning to blow?” There are three basic types of leaf blowers: walk-behind, backpack and handheld.

PAGE 38

Walk-behind blowers If you need maximum blowing power, look for a walk-behind, wheeled unit. It is ideal not only for leaf blowing, but also for moving stubborn debris, removing standing water, preparing asphalt for resurfacing – or for any other job that requires gale-force winds. A good walk-behind blower can cost $699 to $1,199, depending on its features and horsepower rating. For instance, a blower with a side discharge system, which allows the operator to change air direction without tools and eliminates “blowback,” will cost more than a blower without this system. “In choosing a wheeled blower, look for things like pneumatic tires, for ease of movement, and a split discharge opening, which eliminates blowback,” Hilbert said. “Look for the split discharge deflector. And don’t be fooled by mov-

able nozzles. They’re not as effective in eliminating blowback.” Most wheeled blowers are equipped with a powerful 4-cycle engine. The torque range is much wider than a standard 2-cycle engine, but it’s much heavier, too. A front swivel wheel can make handling a large wheeled blower a lot easier. Another convenient feature to look for is a hose and bag attachment, which quickly lets you convert the blower to a vacuum and makes bagging debris simpler. Backpack blowers Backpack blowers are popular among landscapers because of their impressive power-to-weight ratio. “If you spend more than 30 to 40 minutes with a handheld blower, your wrist tends to fatigue and you’ll find yourself need-

ing to take a break,” Hilbert said. “So, if the job takes you more than that, you should consider a backpack blower.” Powered by a 2- to 4-cycle engine, backpack blowers can produce winds greater than 200 miles per hour. “Because of the volume and velocity of air being discharged, a backpack blower can reduce your cleanup time by as much as 50 percent,” Hilbert said. Most jobs that require a backpack blower tend to be bigger jobs, so be sure it’s comfortable. Look for a blower with back padding and adjustable straps that allow you to fit it to your body. Handheld blower For those smaller jobs around the house, like blowing leaves off the patio or grass clippings from the driveway, a handheld

blower is perfect. A handheld blower can come in handy in ways that you’ve never imagined. “I’ve even taken it up on the roof to clear my gutters of debris,” Hilbert said. “Handhelds are great for most homeowners with basic needs, like blowing grass after they cut the lawn and for small leaf jobs as well as cleaning your auto, decks and driveways of snow,” said Jon Paluch, who owns and operates a lawn service. A vacuum attachment is often an option. If you’re going to use the vacuum feature, Paluch recommends spending a few minutes every day vacuuming leaves. “It seems to take a long time to suck up leaves,” he said. “So, I only recommend the vacuum to people with small leaf jobs or for people who go out every day or so to clean up small

amounts of leaves. And the leaves must be dry. Wet leaves rarely get sucked up.” You can usually find 2-cycle handheld blowers for under $159. The higher-end, more powerful handhelds can cost $200 or more. Some manufacturers offer a choice of gas- or electricpowered blowers. Which one you opt for depends largely on how mobile you need to be while using the blower. Electric blowers are traditionally lighter, quieter and vibrate less than gas units. But advancements in technology continue to make this less of an issue. Gas blowers allow you more freedom to roam without worrying about a cord becoming tangled around your legs.

n the surface this would not seem like such a complicated process. However with a line of performance luxury and utilitarian vehicles as complete as the Infiniti line there are some things you may want to consider when making your selection. In November of 1985 the story of Infiniti begins with the formation of a top secret task force within Nissan. The mission was to create a new performance luxury brand to compete with the big U.S. and European luxury brands in the American market. July 1987 the name was chosen and in 1989 the Infiniti officially launches with these two models. Infiniti quickly gained recognition as an industry leader in customer satisfaction. Infiniti has come a long way from then and now offers a full line of nine models to fit all your needs. To determine which one of those models is the one for you consider some of these points. 1.) What type of Driving do you do? Are you in a climate where snow and bad weather is an issue? 2.) What type of Driving do you want to do? Do you enjoy driving? Is there more to it for you than just getting from point A to point B? 3.) How much room do you need for people and or cargo? Do you have someone with you when you drive? Who and how many? Kitchen Cabinets 101 By Robert Nause Top Value Kitchens Kitchen cabinetry has come a long way in the past 20 years. In fact, the kitchen and bath cabinetry industry has evolved so much in recent years that most people under the age of 35 don’t even recognize the word “cupboards”. The word cupboards was commonly used for generations. According to The American Heritage Dictionary, a cupboard was “a closet or cabinet, usually with shelves for storing food, crockery, and the like.” Cabinets manufactured today still serve the same function that cupboards of yesteryear provided. However, today’s cabinetry looks a whole lot better and offers a lot of bells and whistles.

FIND A PLACE TO SHOP

THE BELLS AND WHISTLES

When choosing cabinetry, begin your search by finding a reputable kitchen dealer. The best way to do this is by talking to your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and relatives. Ideally, a good kitchen dealer would be in business for several years, operate an extensive showroom with convenient hours, staff the showroom with dedicated design professionals and employ well- trained and experienced carpenters.

An experienced designer can greatly enhance the ease of use in a kitchen by properly adding several accessories offered by most cabinet companies. With an aging population in Luzerne County, every kitchen should be equipped with rollout trays in base cabinets and/or deep pots-n-pans drawer base cabinets. Reducing the strain on consumer’s joints and backs is rewarding, which is feedback from past customers who greatly value such labor reducing items. Other options such as trash receptacles and super-susan trays are great additions to the overall function of a kitchen as well.

CAVEAT EMPTOR ... Let the buyer beware! There are many variables that determine why one cabinet brand costs more than another cabinet brand. A knowledgeable cabinet designer can easily and clearly explain the differences in the construction of a cabinet box. All cabinet manufacturers use either a particle board or plywood to build the cabinet box. Many overly aggressive cabinet sales people misuse the term “ALL WOOD” in describing their product. Spend a couple of minutes to look at the actual construction and material composition of your intended cabinet selection before you commit to a purchase. In order to conduct an “apple to apple” comparison, consumers must be educated in these details. Cabinet manufacturers have increasingly assisted consumers with this information by publishing their construction details in their literature and on their websites.

MORE STUFF TO KNOW...

PAGE 50

All drawer boxes are not created equal! Most consumers can recognize a wooden drawer box with a dovetail joint. But most consumers don’t pay a lot of attention to the runner system that operates the drawer box. Reviewing the different options is not rocket science. Again, take some time to look at different options at the showroom that you are visiting and confirm the information in the manufacturers brochure or website. Some drawer runners use nylon rollers and others use ball-bearings. Some runners are full extension with a soft close feature while others extend 3/4 of the way.

A WORD ABOUT DOORS

FINISHING TOUCHES

The single biggest variable when shopping for cabinets and comparing prices is making sure that all cabinet suppliers are quoting the same or similar door style. Kraftmaid cabinets, for example, has 32 different price points in their door selections. Many lesser quality cabinet manufacturers offer only a handful of door styles. The two main variables that affect a price of a kitchen are the overlay of the door (full or standard) and the construction of the center panel (as solid wood or veneer).

There’s nothing more pleasing to the eye than finishing a kitchen installation by installing crown moulding. One can use a simple, traditional crown moulding or one can create a striking statement by “stacking” several types of flat stock, decorative trim and crown together. Selecting the proper type of crown, trim, and under cabinet moulding can greatly enhance the over-all look of your kitchen and home.

HOW TO ...

Choose a Website Development Company I

Questions to ask a potential web design company.

n today’s society, it is nearly impossible to compete or get ahead without a website. Of course, just a generic website won’t do you any favors either. You need one that is thoughtfully created with a sitemap, SEO, fast load time, integrated social media buttons and a user-friendly interface. A free site is not going to fulfill your needs. If you want to get the most out of your site, you will need to hire a web development company with skilled professionals who know what it takes to make a site that generates traffic and sales. As the web design industry becomes more competitive it is harder for business owners to determine what makes one company more qualified than the next. With the ability for designers to work from remote locations the industry has been flooded with foreign firms trying to get a piece of the high-paying American market. What to Look for In a Web Development Company An outstanding portfolio isn’t the only thing to look for when choosing a web development company. The company needs to have a full understanding of website functions, including programming languages, and the ability to create sites on a varied amount of platforms. Choosing the right company is crucial because a great site can earn you revenue, but a poorly made site is just a waste of money. When you are looking for a web design company the #1 tip is to ask good questions. Most businesses have no idea what they need when it comes to their website. They are too busy running their businesses. They may think they know what they like, but it may not be what they need. Make sure to ask these simple questions so you can ensure you have found a true professional that is capable of delivering the results you are looking for. First, decide what you want; what your needs are and requirements for your business. Then, decide how much you can invest to have a professional looking website. What should I expect to have on my website?

PAGE 52

• A professional look and feel. • Easy to use navigation and organization of information. • An easily definable marketing message. • Calls to action. • A phone number / contact on every page. • A CMS that I can edit website content myself. • How easy is it to add content? • Video(s) if applicable • Social media integration

• Do I get a detailed proposal outlining the project / timeline? • Do you hand code your websites? This is important. It shows a level of experience you can expect to see, and what their capabilities are. • Will my website be Search Engine friendly? • Will my website work in all internet browsers? • Do you have both a graphic designer and a web developer on staff? • How many websites have you built? • Who will update and maintain the site? • What is the limit on revisions and how does this affect the cost of the website? • If e-commerce how does it process credit cards? Not only will YOU need to ask the right question, but your design company should be asking good questions too, in order to develop a proposal. They should be asking about your business, your products and services, your current marketing, and goals. The most important thing a good web design company needs to ask is about your customers and your target market. Who are your customers? What do they need? What kind of information do they need to make a decision? What will appeal to them? All of these factors will determine the design, function and marketing of your site. When you choose a web design company to develop a new website for your business, you are taking on a business partner. You should both determine if it’s a good fit by asking the questions that will give you the answers you need to be mutually successful.
