I brought it (the idea) to the group knowing that the club already had a track record for giving. The North Scranton Head Start, which includes economically disadvantaged kids from this (our) community, kids are already obviously pre-qualified based on their family’s economic disadvantage. The whole goal of Head Start is giving these kids an equal opportunity –

They don’t know what they don’t have.” The list has grown to include more than double the number of children from the inception of the program. “There might have been 35 to 40 kids the first year…so they (Head Start) combined their forces (morning and afternoon programs) and I think two years ago, we doubled the amount of gifts we gave to the kids. The magic of the Chanukah season will set the stage for an upcoming “Chanukah Miracle of Magic” program at the Jewish Community Center of Scranton, 601 Jefferson Ave., Scranton on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 5:30 p.m. Chanukah Miracle of Magic is the theme of this year’s annual celebration. Illusionist Mark Clark, of Aardvark Entertainment, a full-service entertainment company, performs locally, in the Poconos and nationally and will entertain the audience with a variety of magic tricks. Other activities planned for the evening of family fun include a balloon sculptor, dreidel games, Chanukah crafts and a special performance by the Scranton Hebrew Day School Junior Choir singing Chanukah songs. According to Daniel J. Cardonick, JCC executive director, “We will light the menorah and enjoy kosher Chinese food.” “I like to jokingly say that Chanukah fits into the theme of many Jewish holidays ‘They tried to kill us; they failed; we persevered; let’s eat.’ Chanukah commemorates the miracle of light,” he said. “It marks the Jewish rebels’ victory against the Syrian-Greek army, which oppressed the Jews and desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem. At the time when the Jews rededicated the temple, there was very little oil left that had not been defiled by the Syrian-Greek army. Oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple which was supposed to burn throughout the night every night. There was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight-day festival was declared to commemorate this miracle. Chanukah is about celebrating miracles, and magic is a

The Greater PA. Chapter Alzheimer’s Association has 2012 Memories in the Making calendars and note cards available for holiday gifting. The artwork is created by individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Suggested donation for the calendars is $10 each and the note cards are $10 for a pack of 10 with five different designs. All contributions benefit the programs and services of the association. The Memories in the Making art program originated in California in 1988 at the Alzheimer’s Association Orange County Chapter. Since those early days, additional research supports the power of the program and explains more about why it works. MIM bypasses the dominant verbal aspects of brain function and taps directly into the interior world of the dementia patient. The person with dementia, overwhelmed by an

inability to articulate, can give a voice to this inner world through the use of art materials. By providing a Memories in the Making art class with trained facilitators, the association provides that person with a symbolic language of art and opens up a new channel for communication for care-giving staff and family. MIM focuses on the individual’s remaining strengths and promotes well being. The MIM program asserts that everyone is an artist and art is an avenue that can be used as a means of self-expression for anyone. Through MIM, participants also develop a social network of friends who are also challenged by the changes associated with dementia. For additional information about the Memories in the Making program and the Alzheimer’s Association, call 822.9915 or visit www.alz.org/pa.

miracle! This is why we chose to have a magic performance.” Clark describes himself as a clown, magician, stilt walker, balloon sculptor, fire eater, puppeteer, a living statue and hypnotist. He will do close-up magic and gear his show to the audience. “Basically, there will be things appearing and disappearing, comedy and maybe some juggling…We’ll see,” he said. His wife, Georgette, coowner of Aardvark Entertainment, is a face painter, stilt walker, juggler and face painter. “She is my lovely assistant when I do the big magic shows when I make her appear and disappear,” Mark Clark said. Cardonick said, “We feel his performance appeals to adults and children alike and adds to the “ruach,” or spirit, (“ruach” is the Hebrew word for spirit) to our event.” The menu will include an assortment of food from Chop Chop, a glatt kosher Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. Chicken with broccoli; egg rolls; fried rice; vegetable lo Mein; beef with mixed vegetables; and sautéed green beans will be available, in addition to traditional Chanukah nosh such as “sufganiyot” or jelly doughnuts, and Chocolate Chanukah gelt (coins). The Christmas card family photo debacle

One of the holiday traditions my family enjoys year after year is that of the giving and receiving of Christmas cards. Years ago, it was simple. Our card would come out of a box off the clearance rack or if we were feeling ambitious, it would feature a photo of our one and only dependent at the time, a lab mix named K.D. These days, however, we adhere to the unwritten law that compels all parents of small children to send out photo cards of their adorable, smiling faces. Some years, receiving these cards is easier than sending them. It is rare when late November rolls around and we just happen to have a fantastic family photo, one where we all look presentable. I am a stickler for trying to include all the family members in the photo, not just the children. That stems from the fact that I hope to receive the same. I care not only about how my old college roommate’s children look after all these years. I want to see her, too, and that husband of hers. After all, I knew them long before they had children and I’m curious

about how they are doing beyond their offspring. So I make a point of getting my husband and myself and the dogs in the photo. This year, we had a late start. Our third child was born in mid-November and, of course, I wanted the baby in the photo. We might as well multitask and use the annual Christmas card as a birth announcement. Still recovering and lost in a haze of infant-induced sleeplessness, I addressed my family on the way to celebrate Thanksgiving at my mom’s house. “Now, when we arrive, do not go inside until we get nana to take a family photo. Do you understand?” This was met with a cacophony of “aw, mom!” (s), the loudest coming from my husband. Unfortunately, when I got home later and excitedly downloaded the photos, I was disappointed to see

with the lowest offer with a bid of $71,175.10 for next year, $72,135.25 in 2013 and $74,299.30 in 2014. The charge would increase to $76,528.27 in 2015 and $78,824.11 in 2016. Clarks Green paid South Abington Twp. $80,460 for its services last year. Retaining those services would come at a cost of $82,075 next year, $84,126

in 2013 and $86,649 in 2104. In a five-year contract, the fees would be $89,249 in 2015 and approximately $91,927 in 2016. Clarks Green Council members will vote on the matter during a continuation of their Dec.12 regular council meeting scheduled for Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.

they were far from Christmas card material. My husband had put on more baby weight than I had, and between our pale bloated faces and the fussy-looking baby, we needed to go back to the drawing board. Over the next couple of weeks, every time we had company, I asked our guests to take a family photo of us. Once, I even tried the self-timer option. But getting three children (one who was too young to be bribed or threatened), two dogs and a couple of parents to all photograph well at once was too much for this family. I had long given up on trying to get them to dress in red and green for the photo. Our final, futile attempts have Dani in the Eagles jersey she’d slept in and Doug in his hunting camouflage. At my wit’s end with the holiday quickly approaching, I settled for one of those card display options where you put several different photos on one card, so everyone doesn’t have to look good in a single shot. And the dogs unfortunately did not make the cut. I ordered 125 without enthusiasm for the finished product as the first few from friends and family were delivered in our mail. The first one I opened was of a beautiful family on a beach somewhere, probably Martha’s Vineyard. All dressed in starched white shirts and faded

blue jeans, their golden hair was shining like only a professional photographer could make it. I stared, slack-jawed, at their beauty, convinced every part of their lives must be this perfect. I felt guilty that their seemingly ideal existence made mine seem messy and chaotic. Post Script: Having just made it through a highrisk pregnancy with some very difficult moments, I must once again credit our little corner of the world. The love and support extended to us throughout these past months was astounding. From the countless dinners that were made for us, the carpools that were taken over, the errands run, the gifts of new and used baby supplies and overall concern and care, we are very lucky to live in a truly supportive community where people are endlessly generous. Lions Club president added, “Whether they are rich or poor, the kids are all the same. People say, ‘You’re nice for doing this…’ but what we take out of it is a lot more than we put into it. It’s about the camaraderie and seeing the kids’ eyes light up…that’s what makes it all worthwhile…,” said Skinner, He added, “We need the people/ volunteers ahead of time…” The planning process for the Santa visits gets underway months before Santa actually gears up and heads off to visit local children, according to Skinner, and involves purchasing gifts that Santa gives to each child on his routes. “We gave large coloring books to kids four and up, regular size coloring books to two to three-year-olds, and pop-up

(non-coloring) books to 0 to one-year olds,” said Kusma. The Lions Club purchases the books. Among the projects The Abington Lions Club is involved with throughout the year include the Adopt a Highway project on Routes 6 & 11; coffee stops on I-81, usually on the northbound side four times per year on Memorial Day, Labor Day, the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving; the fishing derby; and scholarships to kids graduating from Abington Heights School District. Skinner said, “One of the things about the Lions Club that I always stand very proudly on is that every single solitary cent we get from the public goes back to the public…” To lend a hand with the 2012 Santa visits, call Kusma at 570.575.4925, and to learn more about The Abington Lions Club, visit AbingtonLions.org. “We’re always looking for people who are willing to volunteer and new members who are interested in enhancing and giving back to the community. Our goal for next year is to be able to staff the project so we can return to the normal service area that includes the Waverly, Dalton and Newton and Ransom areas ,” said Kusma.

Christmas is just a couple of days away, and excitement surrounding the big day is definitely mounting, especially for my family. You see, my little niece Audrey Elizabeth will celebrate her first Christmas with us here in Tunkhannock. And I can’t wait. It will be a joyous time. When she gets older, you can count on the fact that her uncle and I will take her to the Dietrich during holiday visits for a movie or two. If she were old enough now, we would definitely have to see “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked.” I know, I know, kids’ movies are not for everyone, but don’t fear, Hildy and Jeffrey have brought in three other movies for the holidays. You can watch Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law on the big screen as Holmes and Watson in the new flick “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” Another thriller that we are showing is “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” I have read all of the books in the Stieg Larsson trilogy and am looking forward to seeing the American movie version of the first book. Did I mention Daniel Craig plays the role of Mikael Blomkvist? For some folks, myself included, that is reason enough to see a movie. We will also bring in “We Bought a Zoo,” starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson this Friday, Dec. 23. This movie looks super familyfriendly and heart-warming. There are lots of movie options at the Dietrich for Christmas. And if you are still looking for a present for almost anyone on your Christmas list, Dietrich movie bags make great gifts. Each bag is beautifully wrapped and contains two movie tickets, two bags to bring in for the Dietrich’s famous popcorn and two bags of candy. They make wonderful presents for employees, teenagers, families, etc., and there is nothing quite like an evening at the movies spent together. Gift bags can be purchased at the theater during movie show times. Please call the theater at 996.1507 for more information about movie bags or to purchase bags during our office hours. During Christmas break, our artists-in-residence Amy and Steve Colley will offer a Holiday Camp for young artists ages five to 12, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on December 27, 28 and 29. Students will

LIBRARY NEWS

BY MARY ANN MCGRATH

Due to a typographical error in last week’s column, the list of holiday hours set by the Abington Community Library was incorrect. Please note that the library will be closed on Friday, Dec. 23, Saturday, Dec. 24, Sunday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Dec. 26. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 9 am. It will also be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2 for the New Year’s holiday. This is the time of year for lists of “the best” of 2011 to make their appearance. Book Page, a publication available free of charge to patrons of the library, recently released its editors’ picks for the Best Children’s Books of 2011. A total of 10 titles currently available in the Picture Book and Middle Grade collections that were purchased during the past 12 months are on the list. Look for the following “best” to enjoy with children: Picture Books “Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet - Here is the true story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who devised the puppets for Macy’s original Thanksgiving Day parades. “Blue Chicken” by Deborah Freedman - An enterprising chicken attempts to help an artist paint the barnyard and accidentally turns the whole picture blue. “Brother Sun, Sister Moon” by Katherine Paterson - Text and illustrations reimagine Francis of Assisi’s 1224 prayer of praise in celebration of God’s gifts throughout the universe. “Grandpa Green” by Lane Smith - A child explores the ordinary life of his great-grandfather as expressed in his topiary garden. “I Want My Hat Back” by Jon Klassen - A bear almost gives up his search for his missing hat until he remembers something important. “Me . . . Jane,” by Patrick McDonnell- Holding her stuffed toy chimpanzee, young Jane Goodall observes nature, reads Tarzan books and dreams of living in Africa and helping animals. “Swirl by Swirl” by Joyce Sidman - Poems celebrate the shape of spirals in nature, from rushing rivers to flower buds and even the shape of an ear. Middle Grade Fiction “Dead End in Norvelt” by Jack Gantos - In the historic town of Norvelt, PA, 12-year-old Jack Gantos spends the summer of 1962 grounded for various offenses until he is assigned to help an elderly neighbor with a most unusual chore involving the newly dead, molten wax, twisted promises, Girl Scout cookies, underage driving, lessons from history, typewriting and countless bloody noses. “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making” by Catherynne M. Valente - Twelve-year-old September’s ordinary life in Omaha turns to adventure when a Green Wind takes her to Fairyland to retrieve a talisman the new and fickle Marquess wants from the enchanted woods. “Wonderstruck” by Brian Selznick - Having lost his mother and his hearing in a short time, 12-year-old Ben leaves his Minnesota home in 1977 to seek the father he never knew in New York City and meets Rose, who is also longing for something missing from her life. Ben’s story is told in words; Rose’s in pictures. The Abington Community Library is located at 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. Learn how to make every penny count BY DON MCGLYNN dmcglynn@theabingtonjournal.com

In recent years, online penny auctions have grown tremendously and the new book “Penny Wise: The Complete Guide to Saving Money with Online Penny Auctions” can help those interested become a part of it. A penny auction is a bidding-fee auction. Participants purchase bids at a pre-set price to use in the online auctions. Each bid typically increases the auction price of the item by a penny. When time expires, the last participant to have placed a bid wins the item, with the additional cost being the final bid price plus shipping. Written by Baptist Bible College (BBC) Executive Director of Communications and Marketing Ken Knelly and former BBC web designer Joshua Waldron, the book explains the origins of the penny auction industry, the business model behind the

sites, basic fundamentals and various auction formats, ways to know when to bid and when not to, developing an online identity; methods of tracking your success, recognizing red flags and problem sites, monetizing your wins and how to start your own website. “It’s a very different way of buying things, and if you’re not focused on what you’re doing, and you’re not prepared, you won’t get value for what you’re doing, or you might lose your money,” said Knelly. Knelly was first made aware of penny auctions by his friend and co-author of the book, Waldron. In the preface, Waldron explains that he discovered penny auctions in 2009 and by December 2009 he launched the website Penny Auction List (http://pennyauctionlist.com/). The website was the first filtered directory of penny auctions on the Web and features penny auction tips, strategies and news.

As more penny auction sites opened and closed, Waldron felt a book was needed. “There really wasn’t a book out there on the whole business of how it works, a penny auction for dummies-type book,” said Knelly. Waldron, who now lives in Virginia, reached out to Knelly and the two began work on the book communicating through email, Google docs and over the phone. After running the website, Waldron was very familiar on the subject, but Knelly admitted he knew very little about the subject when the process began, but said his 13 years of experience working in newspapers helped him learn about the service quickly so he could write about it. “I always kind of viewed it, when I was in journalism, as the same kind of thing of trying to make ideas clear or help people understand things,” said Knelly. “My contribution is really

Holiday tunes BY JOAN MEAD-MATSUI Abington Journal Correspondent

Gerard Mayer’s new CD “Home for the Holidays: Gerard Mayer and Friends” is now available to purchase.

Entertainer Gerard Mayer has a new CD available for the holidays. His first CD raised more than $12,000 for The Regional Dialysis Patient Fund, according to Mayer. The fund provides blood pressure monitors, medications and transportation to and from dialysis usually three times a week. “Home for the Holidays: Gerard Mayer and Friends” released Dec. 1. The CD features Mayer on vocals, Dr. Henry Yeager, an area nephrologist, on trumpet, Sean Flynn on rhythm guitar, John Lewis, lead guitar, and Mark Woodyatt, violin and viola. Dietrich Theater hosts new display

A new Stephen Hendrickson display is ready to be viewed at the Dietrich Theater, along with antique toys, displayed by Patrick Robinson and Mark Mitchell, Amy Colley’s doll house all ready for Christmas, and more. The public is invited to experience these displays. Stephen Hendrickson, production designer for the CBS hit, “The Good

Wife,” spins a different theme for the holidays every year at the Dietrich Theater. Displays that patrons may remember, including the Winter Circus, were swept away by the September flood, but Hendrickson has completed his new display entitled, “On Christmas Eve, who let the monkeys in.” This display tells a story

that each onlooker is invited to discover. Children can push buttons and make the figures move, around and around, up and down. Hendrickson divides his time between New York City and Tunkhannock. His creative mind has already conceived ideas for displays at least three years from now. First, he collects figures

and pieces of the sets. Then the ideas come flooding in. Then the production begins and continues over many months. All of the holiday displays will be at the Dietrich Theater through the end of the year. They can be viewed any time the theater is open or by appointment. For more information, call 996.1500.

Area fighters win at MMA tournament BY JOE BARESS Abington Journal Correspondent

Dave Morgan and Mike Baresse, two students of Jason Ratchford at Pridelands Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Clarks Summit, each won Cage Fight 9 Mixed Martial Arts fights on Nov. 25 at Lackawanna College. Morgan won his professional flyweight fight over Evan Velez by a unanimous decision with several guillotine attempts, according to Ratchford. “I knew going in, I had a wrestling advantage so I used that to my strength,” Morgan said. “Up at Pridelands, they’ve got me going with my jiu-jitsu and my boxing so I used a lot more of that.” Baresse defeated Mark Mangiardi in an amateur middleweight fight, in which Mangiardi tapped out in the second round after Baresse held him in a fierce guillotine choke. “He made the mistake of going in for a double-leg kick down on me,” Baresse said. “I pretty much capitalized on what me and my coach (Ratchford) were going over in the locker room, just sinking my arm in deep on a standing guillotine.” Ratchford coaches both fighters and is the lead instructor at Pridelands Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Pridelands not only has a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program, but also an MMA program. “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a system of ground fighting, throws, submissions, chokes and takedowns,” Ratchford said. “MMA is a mixture of everything, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, freestyle Greco-Roman wrestling, kick boxing and anything else you can think of.” Ratchford started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1999 and after about 12 years earned a promotion to black belt on June 26. “I believe in my jiu-jitsu so much,” Ratchford said. “I believe that if someone wants to compete or train or really learn jiu-jitsu, whether it be for self defense or for fighting at the professional or amateur level, I believe that once they try my See MMA, Page 2

FACTORYVILLE - Lakeland had three players score in double figures in its 6354 victory over Lackawanna Trail in the consolation game of the Lackawanna Trail Invitational on Dec.17. “It was good (to get the win),” Lakeland head coach Dave Rosenkrans said. “Kyle (Kiehart) just came back last night, so we were kind of out of it a little bit in that game, but we had a little more team chemistry tonight.” The Chiefs opened the game on a 10-2 run and led, 19-10, at the end of the first quarter. “We try to keep the crowd out of the game, that’s a big thing,” Rosenkrans said. “In three out of the four games, we jumped out to first quarter leads. This time, we actually held on to one. Hopefully, these guys will turn it on now.” Point guard Eric Grabowski, who finished the game with 13 points and five steals, forced four turnovers in the first quarter. “Eric’s a good player,” Rosenkrans said. “He was excellent distributing the ball and was more under control on offense today.” The Lions cut the lead to six points at the half. Matt Lochen and Lyle Sweppenheiser each hit a three-pointer in the quarter for Trail. The Lions started the second half with an 8-2 run to tie the game with 3:37 left in the third quarter. Lady Lions fall to Tunkhannock

The Tunkhannock High School girls basketball team defeated Lackawanna Trail, 60-36, on Thursday, Dec. 15. Lisa Kinter led Tunkhannock in scoring with 17 points in the game played at Lackawanna Trail High School while teammate Kassie Williams chipped in 13 points. Melissa Grimm led the Lady Lions in scoring with

11 points. The loss came on the heels of Lackawanna Trail’s 45-37 defeat over Carbondale on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The girls will try to bounce back this week. The team took on Montrose High School on Tuesday, Dec. 20 and is scheduled to play Old Forge on Thursday, Dec. 22 at Old Forge High School.

Scranton’s Strong sets record for coaching wins The University of Scranton’s Mike Strong became the alltime leader in career coaching wins in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III women’s basketball Saturday with a 46-43 victory over host Cabrini College in Radnor but he wasn’t on the bench when the record became his.. Strong was ejected for the first time in his 921-game career after receiving two technical fouls midway through the second half. “I should probably say I did it on purpose, but I didn’t,” Strong said. “I slipped. Both technicals were deserved. “The good news is that it emotionally charged us and we finished.” When the Lady Royals held on at the end, Strong improved to 758-163 in his 32-year ca-

reer, allowing him to break a tie at 757 with Phil Kahler, the retired St. John Fisher coach. Strong was not, however, on the bench when the record officially became his. Erin Boggan led Scranton with 11 points while adding eight rebounds and three steals. Lindsay Fluehr had 10 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. Tayler Pallotta, a junior from Dunmore, had eight points and 11 rebounds to help Scranton improve to 4-4. “I’m very humbled and very proud,” Strong said. “We’re fortunate that we have so many Philly-area alumni. If we were not going to get it in Scranton that it could happen here. This achievement is for all the players, assistant coaches and staff. It’s a celebration for all of us.”

The third quarter had four lead changes, but Abington Heights finished the quarter strong, scoring eight straight points. Katherine Rosencrance and Caitie Nealon each had four points during the 8-0 run. Despite the deficit, the Royals crawled back into the game with 16 fourthquarter points. Holy Redeemer cut the lead to one behind Alana Wilson’s six straight points, but Abington Heights came up with two big stops with less than a minute to play to help the Comets secure the victory. “It was big and they came through,” Bucciarelli said. “That was a very good team we played tonight so I was proud of my girls.” O’Donnell led Abington Heights with 14 points

“She has a lot of experience under her belt.” O’Donnell’s rebound on the Lady Comets’ final possession was just one of Abington Heights’ many second chance opportunities. The Lady Comets shot poorly in the first half and fell behind early after Holy Redeemer went on a 6-0 run to start the game. Despite the slow start, Abington Heights grabbed a slew of offensive rebounds. “Getting that second or third shot helped us out a great deal because we weren’t hitting the first shot,” Bucciarelli said. “It helped pull us back into the game.” The Comets’ scrappy play gave Abington Heights a slim 20-15 lead late in the second quarter, but Sara Altemose nailed a three-

He said Pridelands provides this same family-oriented environment. “It’s different from any other club that I’ve been associated with in MMA,” Morgan said. “I like going up there and being able to be myself.” Baresse attributes a lot of his success and the evolution of his fighting to Ratchford and the Pridelands program. “It took that dedication to Jason’s program and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to really perfect the submissions and the defense and it paid off in this last fight because I finished it,” Baresse said. “I got the guillotine.” Ratchford started Pridelands

about two years ago in Green Ridge. When his student base grew, he needed to move to a bigger location in Clarks Summit across the street from JJ Bridges, where he has been for less than a year. “I opened my academy because I really have a passion for teaching,” Ratchford said. “I love seeing people getting better and love seeing people reach goals that they never thought were possible.” Ratchford also offers a yearround special of free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for 30 days.
