Mummers strut their stuff in full regalia during a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Scranton.
“I have a green shirt with a leprechaun on it, lots of green necklaces and green glasses,” said Becky Rich, 19, a University of Scranton biology major who expects she’ll deck herself out in all that in honor of Scranton’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday. Wilkes-Barre’s parade will follow on Sunday and give spectators as well as participants another chance to sport the color of spring. Visit the downtown streets and you’re likely to notice greenery cropping up on everything from sashes and vests to ribbons and buttons. On parade days, even a therapy collie or rescued greyhound is just as likely as an Irish setter to march along with a jaunty green kerchief around its neck. “Everyone always wears green,” University student Danielle Lanciano, 20, of Pipersville said, ticking off a list as she walked across campus earlier this week. “The hats. The glasses. The beads.” “Stickers, too,” her friend Megan O’Connell, 21, reminded her, indicat-
ing an enthusiastic spectator might attach shamrock-shaped stickers to his or her face. No matter what you wear to either parade, you can expect to see and hear the spectacle of pipe-and-drum bands, high-school marching bands, Victorian Highwheelers on old-time bicycles, Scout troops, dancers and members of service organizations who might give out candy along the way. In each town, the parades are preceded by a race. Scranton’s Brian P. Kelly Memorial Race is two miles and covers the relatively flat parade route. Registration will take place from 9 to 10:45 a.m., and the race begins at 11. Wilkes-Barre’s Renal Race is a “one-mile fun run” that begins at the Martz Amphitheatre in Kirby Park at 8:30 a.m. and ends at Public Square. Restaurant Review
A spot for all seasons
PAGE 4
You’re hot, then you’re cold. You’re yes, then you’re no. You’re in, then you’re out … Apologies to Ms. Katy Perry, but those lyrics simply would not leave this head on a half-winter, half-spring sort of day on which the sun was gloriously shining (no jacket required) yet sleet was in the 24hour forecast. That partially explains why we chose to visit the fine-dining establishment with the on-site ice bar during this wackyweather time of year we call “meteorological spring.” Those hanging on to winter and hoping for one heckuva snowstorm yet will be pleased to know the ice bar’s still sufficiently frosty (and wow-worthy and open through this weekend), while the restaurant, the deep-rooted Damenti’s, with its expansive, well-manicured grounds, looks primed for all seasons. But how was the food? Quite good, and thanks for your curiosity. A bit pricy, but in the end memorable enough to justify your fine-dining investment. Those who can’t make the stretch, however, will be pleased to hear of a bar menu touting the more-budget-friendly favorites of owners Kevin and Helen McDonald. Be aware, though: These are described as “tasty treats” and probably should be treated as tapas, or small plates. If you’re looking for dinner in this section, two or three would make sense. Soups and bisques start at $5.95, and beef tenderloin tornadoes with frizzled onion check in at $14.95. In between, you’ll find everything from chile rellenos and fried green tomatoes to an open-faced crab melt and fried flounder sandwich at price points straddling those figures. “Helen’s Grandmother’s Hamburger” ($10.95) even makes an appearance for our believers in basics. We bypassed the main appetizers menu on the grounds it was seafood-heavy and seafood seemed to be in style here for our main plates. We looked to the fun favorites menu for a kickoff, until a current special of meatball eggrolls ($11.95) was announced and we just could not resist. Asian-Italian-American fusion? Yes or no, these worked to perfection. Two to a plate, the crispy yet light shells broke open easily with the back of a fork to reveal a soft, generous, well-flavored supply of what must be a meatball schematic from someone’s grandma’s kitchen. A small cup of perky marinara sauce made a luscious dipper. These having set the tone, we knew we were in for at least some glory as dinner continued. Though the heady scent of steak filled the air before we even entered, we settled on seafood, a credit to the creative, multi-

faceted, even make-your-own (in some cases) options here. My choice was a bigger hit for me than my guest’s was for him, but that’s because he found the marinara sauce on his shrimp parmigiana ($28.95 and served with pasta for $1 more) a bit bland. Otherwise, he had no complaints and certainly not about portion size, as he got to pack up a nice container for takeaway. I, on the other hand, had nothing to take away. Finished every last bite of my grouper with baked asparagus ($26.95), yes I did. I ordered the grouper, I’ll admit, largely because it’s an ocean offering you still don’t see every day in these parts. Here you can have it several ways. My only trouble was whether to try it with a scrumptious-sounding mustard crust or this way, which sounded more traditional. It indeed proved traditional, except in its presentation, which was perfect and almost too pretty to eat. This flaky, flavorful white fish courtesy of the Caribbean came in the form of a roll, wrapped nicely around the several thick, bright-green spears of asparagus. A parmigiana breadcrumb topping added crunchy kick. My side choice was a potato or a vegetable, and I went with the potato given I already had the vegetable, tied up with a figurative bow inside my fish. I picked garlic mashed over baked or steak fries

and wasn’t certain I’d made the right decision until the small but lovely dish arrived. These spuds were whipped smooth as velvet, with nary a lump, and the garlic was anything but overpowering. In fact, it was barely there; garlic enthusiasts might want to request an extra shot. Now to pick a nit or two, without taking away from what truly was a fine meal. The wine list. It was impressive enough but only if you’re going with a bottle. Wines by the glass, it turns out, are generic, and so I settled for a lackluster house pinot grigio instead of the PouillyFuisse I’d have liked, had I dared to order a bottle pour moi seul – for me alone – and pardon my French. (My guest was having a lager, see.) I adjusted, however. After all, the ice bar awaited, so I simply saved my tastes for an after-dinner drink, enjoyed while marveling about how soon this will all be gone. But fear not, fans, for summer will bring something equally fun to this same spot, which is to say a sand bar. Godspeed us all to the beach. Times Leader food critics remain anonymous.

ne beer is a treat, but how about an entire line from one brewery, most of which are rare? Even better. Brew enthusiasts can stop at Sabatini’s Pizza in Exeter on Wednesday to sample 10 brews by Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware. “We’ve been planning this event for quite a few months,” Lindo Sabatini said. “Having one or two of these beers is special enough, but to have all of them? That’s pretty cool. More than half of the beers on the list are very hard to get.” Beers on the list range from chili and fruit beer to imperial stouts and IPAs. Some of the brews are heavy hitters. “The Worldwide Stout and 120 Minute IPA have 18 percent alcohol,” Sabatini said. “To have both of them on draft at once is pretty rare.” Entry is free, reservations are unnecessary, and patrons can show up any time Wednesday. All beers will be tapped in the morning. Sabatini said most will visitors will come between 5 and 7 p.m. “People are welcome to try as many or as little as they’d like,” Sabatini said. Grave Digger is a signature monster truck in the Monster Jam series, well-known for its eerie paint job and power on the truck track.
Randy Brown has that insight, given he’s been driving with the Grave Digger fleet since 2003 and Monster Jam itself since 2000. “The adrenaline rush from all the horsepower, from jumping through the air, it’s just incredible,” he said. hen we first meet Arlene and her lover, they’re scheming to kill her husband, Paul. • The second time the zany trio appears, flighty Arlene wants to goad Paul into getting rid of Mitchell. • Finally, when the men have had enough of this woman-sochangeable, Paul and Mitchell join forces and try to do away with her.
The operative word here is “try,” because in “Murder at the Howard Johnson’s,” nobody ever succeeds in actually murdering anyone. “Of course they’re bad at murder. They’re bad at everything. They have very little follow-through in their lives,” said Richie Cannaday, who is directing the farce for the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble. “I don’t think they would know where to begin.” Well, the would-be killers do have some ideas, among them guns and window ledges, Novocain and a bathtub. But starting isn’t the same as finishing. Could it be they’re just not ruthless enough? “There’s always a point of no return, and these guys never cross the point of no return,” Cannaday said. “It’s endearing in a dark-comedy, seedy kind of way. You love them because they just can’t do it.” At one point, the director said, Arlene even wants to make sure the water in the motel bathroom is the right temperature so Paul will feel comfortable as he drowns.
Local artist Jody Hadsall will give a lecture and demonstration today at the Wyoming Valley Art League in WilkesBarre, followed by a workshop tomorrow.

Elizabeth Dowd as Arlene seems to be bidding a tender farewell to her husband, played by Gerard Stropnicky in the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble’s hilarious production of ‘Murder at the Howard Johnson’s.’
“These people come up with half-baked plans that come out of very rash thinking brought about by passion,” Cannaday said. “It plays out like a Coen brothers movie might.” “These people are not criminals,” he said. “They’re your dentist. They’re your car salesman. They’re regular Joes.” The cast includes Elizabeth Dowd, Gerard Stropnicky and James Goode. Director Cannaday said they’re doing a great job with the humorous plot. He also is proud of the work of set designer Ellen Lenbergs, technical director Earl Martz, lighting designer Sabrina Hamilton, costume designer Emily Weisgerber and props designer Michael Fritz, whose combined efforts create the ambience of the 1970s.

When words fail By RENE RODRIGUEZ McClatchy Newspapers
In this dumb, insulting movie, Eddie Murphy is Jack McCall, a fast-talking literary agent who doesn’t read manuscripts. He just knows how to package books to sell. He must learn to be a better person after a Bodhi tree sprouts in his yard and loses a leaf with every word he says. When the branches are bare, Jack will keel over dead. This is a crass, soulless cashgrab, a racist, homophobic and colossally misguided vanity

Marjoe Gortner film hard to find on DVD Q. In the ’80s there was a movie called “When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder?” It starred Marjoe Gortner, Hal Linden, Candy Clark and others. I can’t find it, or even a mention of it listed with the many stars who were in it. Could someone have bought the rights to it and is that why it can’t be listed anywhere? A. The 1979 film is listed in several references I consulted and on Linden’s website, among other places, (Turner Classic Movies’ website sums it up in this way: “Marjoe Gortner plays a drug dealer whose car breaks down in a small U.S. town. In turn, the town’s people become victim to his unique brand of physical and mental torture.”) It also appears that it was released on VHS, although copies can be hard to find, and there are various online sellers offering unauthorized DVDs of it. So it has not been erased from public memory. It may simply be that ownership issues, or a lack of interest, has kept it from current release.

Q. I am wondering what happened to my new favorite sitcom, “Man Up,” which aired on ABC on Tuesday nights. It suddenly disappeared. A. An insufficient number of viewers agreed with you about three guys trying to figure out what being a real man means. The network dropped it after eight episodes and has posted the five remaining installments on ABC.com. Do you have a question or comment for the mailbag? Write to me at rheldenfels@thebeaconjournal.com or by regular mail to the Akron Beacon Journal, 44 E. Exchange St., Akron, OH 44309.

You may be on the defensive, and it will be far too easy to lash out for reasons that have nothing to do with the current circumstance. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). There’s a certain pleasure in getting things right. So you’ll go over your work again and again until you’re absolutely sure that there are no mistakes in it. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Daughter raised in abusive home is still burdened by past Dear Abby: My sisters and I grew up in a horrible household with our mother. She was not only OK with the severe abuse and neglect we suffered, she encouraged it. Now grown up, my sisters have moved out of state and have no contact with her. My contact with Mom is limited although I live close to her. My sisters want her to know nothing about them, and they are very cautious.
DEAR ABBY ADVICE Recently, one of them had a beautiful baby. Because of the abuse she suffered during our childhood it was difficult for her to conceive, so this seems like a miracle. I was given the news on the condition that Mom is not to know about the baby, nor is anyone who talks to her — aunts, uncles, children, grandchildren and our cousins.
If I don’t keep my promise, my sisters will cut me out of their lives, too. I’m angry about it. I didn’t hurt them, MOM did. I went through the same nightmare they experienced. How do I deal with all of this now? — Prisoner of the Past Dear Prisoner: Your sisters have dealt with the abuse they suffered by going away, leaving all reminders behind. two-fisted Civil War vet searching for gold out West who stumbled instead into another Civil War — this one a thousand years old and millions of miles away. It’s taking place on Mars, which is where John Carter wakes up and asks, “Where the hell am I?” He’s landed in the end game of the Martian Civil War, when two cities, Helium and the mobile city of Zodanga, are about to have their final battle. Shape-shifting pan-dimensional beings have set up Zodanga to deflate Helium. The armies are clad in gear borrowed from the ancient Romans and flit about in huge, fragile solar-powered flying galleys. The movie has the requisite sword fights and land and sea (air) battles, with the obligatory “Let them to fight in the arena” moment. But “John Carter” is hampered by the staggering exposition this “introduction of the myth” installment must take care of — races, tribes, names, religions, Martian science about “The Ninth Ray.” It’s a state-of-the-digital-art 3-D film with 1930s “Flash Gordon” story elements, stuff that probably wasn’t as dated 100 years ago when Burroughs was writing his pulp fiction. A true Disney touch? Playing up the happy, helpful monster “mutt” who takes to Carter and follows him like a puppy. It’s a popcorn movie, not to be taken any more seriously than “Clash of the Titans” and its ilk. But even by those standards, it’s still a bit of a slog.
patience of the “Don’t GO in there” crowd by making Sarah mostly passive and her actions illogical. But those aren’t fatal failings for a movie whose terror can be read in every silent scream on Olsen’sgorgeousface, servedupin extreme close-ups. Sarah hides under tables and beds. The “intruder” — whose face we never see — seems to lose interest in chasing her, from time

to time. Sarah doesn’t scream for help, doesn’t pick up anything she could use to defend herself. With all the doors padlocked, weak littleSarahcan’tforceherwayoutinto the light. She must go into this room or that basement to escape. Olsen plays Sarah as paralyzed, with paroxysms of fear that have herstiflingscreamsandforgetting to breathe. She’s the perfect surrogate for the horror-movie fan, stunned into inaction by a confrontation with what could be the supernatural, and stone deaf to the audience shouts of “Don’t GO in there” and “Get out from under that bed.”
