Dusk fell and the elves came out. Actually, they were two human artists. But 17-year-old Amanda Trzesniowski of Wilkes-Barre and her mom, Lori White, felt a little like Santa’s helpers as they created a holiday surprise in downtown Wilkes-Barre. The pair spent Tuesday evening painting a snowman, a reindeer and fir trees in the windows of the former Wendy’s Restaurant on South Main Street – sure to be a pleasant diversion for the downtown workers and shoppers who would notice it the next day. “I’m liking it,” Snyder Trzesniowski said of Wilkes-Barre’s downtown holiday celebration. Set for Saturday, activities include a parade, in which Trzesniowski plans to march as a Meyers High School cheerleader, as well as music, storytelling, complimentary hot dogs and hot chocolate, a Christmastree lighting on Public Square and a free showing of “A Christmas Story” at Movies 14. The backdrop for the festivities is brightened this year with the windows of 40 downtown businesses freshly painted to sport such images as gingerbread men, angels and crisply wrapped presents.

You’ll find a Nativity scene at Edward Jones investment company, a horse-drawn sleigh at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, evergreen boughs and ornaments on City Cuts hair salon, snowflakes on Outrageous gift store and a “Peace on Earth” message on Butler Eye Care. ment Store. “Right now, I am thrilled,” he said earlier this week. “I’m amazed at the participation. We haven’t done anything like this in 30 years.” The Downtown Wilkes-Barre Business Association embraced the idea, said Michelle Wise, who coordinated the effort and welcomed 17-year-old Kaitlyn Kishbaugh of Forty Fort to paint a snowman in the window of her Dunkin’ Donuts store. “It’s really making things festive,” Wise said of the decorations. And it will help downtown WilkesBarre become a holiday “destination,” Association representative John Maday predicted. There are plenty of reasons to visit downtown Wilkes-Barre tonight, too, with Third
Friday Art Walk exhibits in such locations as Marquis Art & Frame at 122 S. Main St., and the Wyoming Valley Art League, which has new headquarters at rear 132 S. Franklin St. For live performances tonight, you can visit Arts YOUniverse, where, thanks to a grant from the Luzerne County Down Syndrome Network of the Luzerne Foundation, several children and adults spent 10 weeks studying acting, music and creative movement They will show what they have learned during a 6 p.m. performance called “Together on the Downbeat.” “My favorite part of the show is when Patrick Cleary sings ‘Edelweiss’ (as Captain Von Trapp), accompanied by four little girls each playing a ukulele tuned to a different chord,” music instructor Kathleen Godwin said. “There won’t be a dry eye in the house.”

Cheers! By SARA POKORNY spokorny@timesleader.com
Giovanni Bellini was an Italian Renaissance painter known for harmony of light, color and mood. So it’s no surprise one of Fresco Grill and Martini Bar’s most well-balanced cocktails bears his name. This version of a Bellini is a sparkling-wine cocktail with vodka, peach schnapps, a splash of orange juice and sparkling wine. The sparkling wine can be extracted to make a cocktail with a bit more bite, or a peach nectar can substitute for it to maintain a strong peach flavor. Sparkling-wine, or Champagne, cocktails became popular among the upper class in the late 1800s. Mixing sparkling wine, which can be dry and bitter, with other spirits made for punchy drinks that still went down smoothly. ••• BELLINI Served at: Fresco Grill and Martini Bar, Dallas Shopping Center, Dallas Price: $7 Recipe: • Vodka • Peach schnapps • Sparkling wine • Orange juice. Fill a martini shaker with one quarter peach schnapps, one quarter sparkling wine, half vodka, and top off with a splash of orange juice. Shake well with ice, pour into martini glass and serve.
Restaurant Review
A feast for the body and soul You can sit anywhere, the smiling server said. “So where do you want to sit?” my companion asked me. As if we’d want to be anywhere but near the special window, able to lean over and clearly see the creek that runs underneath Flow Bar & Restaurant in Jim Thorpe. Cozily ensconced in a onetime, 19th-century mill, Flow wasn’t overly crowded when we arrived for a late Saturday lunch, and we easily snagged a table close enough to hear the rushing water. Isn’t that the kind of pleasant white noise people record to help them relax? Here, we had the real thing. Enchanted by the creek, we also were charmed by the menu and its aim to “celebrate the small local farmers of the Lehigh Valley and Pocono area.” Curried Pork Barbecue ($10), Cod Tacos ($10) and “Almost Famous Grilled Cheese” ($10) with Brie, cheddar and Swiss all sounded inviting, but a Salmon BLT ($12) with locally grown tomato, hickory-smoked bacon, spring greens, spiced aioli and Pacific salmon layered on bakedon-premises multigrain sounded

even better and proved wonderfully hearty and tasty. My companion ordered a “Klee Burger” ($10), which was made from free-range beef (kudos for that) and served on a brioche roll. His one complaint was that, considering the gener-
ous thickness of the meat, the sandwich could have used more sweet-onion jam, Swiss cheese and aioli. We topped off our meal by shamelessly sharing Lemon Thyme Panna Cotta ($7), a sweet and creamy Italian-style flan
made doubly delicious by the lemon drizzle and thyme leaves, as well as Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Mousse ($8) which also was dazzlingly drizzled, this time with chocolate and sprinkled with pink Hawaiian sea salt. While the dining experience is a feast for the body, the art gallery next door is a feast for the soul. If you’re a logophile (lover of words) you’ll be amazed at how many unusual ones author and illustrator Victor Stabin incorporated to create perhaps the most fascinating ABC series ever. fy emotions. “When you’re on an island, taken out of your typical surroundings, I think your true feelings come out,” said Mary Scarpa of Tunkhannock, who plays the power-hungry Antonia.
TEMPEST Continued from page 7
“She’s driven by the malicious need to be on top,” Scarpa said. “She envies her brother (Prospero), so she tries to kill him.” If you wonder what happened to Prospero’s traitorous brother, Antonio, that character from the
original script has become a traitorous sister, the better to make use of female talent in this production. Prospero’s faithful friend Gonzalo, likewise, has become Gonzala. In a plot chock-full of nefarious
schemes, actor Sam Corey said, you’ll notice “the ‘good’ characters, the ones who are pure in spirit, see the island as a lush paradise. Those who aren’t so good see it as an awful place.”

DVD
Two DVDs about men facing crossroads top the new releases. ••• “LARRY CROWNE,” GRADE B-MINUS: Tom Hanks takes on another “every guy” role with this story about a skilled UMart employee, fired because he doesn’t have a college degree, who enrolls at community college so such an injustice can never happen again. Hanks is a superb actor and competent director, but the boyish charms that have carried him through so many productions are beginning to show signs of aging. ••• “BEGINNERS,” GRADE B-PLUS: Mike Mills wades into the complexity and diversity of love with this often-touching, often-painful story of multiple romances. “Beginners” is the story of budding relationships (between a man and a woman, a man and a man, a man and a dog) and fully mature connections, like that between a father and son. Each has its own complexities, which Mills treats with deep respect. ••• ALSO COMING TO DVD THIS WEEK: “VIETNAM IN HD”: War footage is presented in high def. “WHITECHAPEL: THE RIPPER RETURNS”: A modern-day killer copies Jack the Ripper. “SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS: HOLIDAYS WITH SPONGEBOB”: Includes “Christmas,” “Halloween” and “To Love a Patty.” “BELLFLOWER”: Young love goes awry.
Fewer laughs in ‘Happy Feet 2’ By ROGER MOORE The Orlando Sentinel
IF YOU GO
“Happy Feet Two” is to 2006’s “Happy Feet” what “Babe: Pig in the City” was to “Babe,” a clever, adorable film remade with most of the charm wrung out. The conceit — penguins each have a special song to woo the opposite sex, save for one penguin (voiced by Elijah Wood) who can’t sing a lick but can dance — is abandoned for a muddled sequel about trapped penguins and inter-species cooperation, all in the name of “adapt or die.” Yeah, global warming’s still a subtext (no longer over-fishing). But responsibility passes to the critters if they want to survive. The songs are weaker, the laughs fewer, and this plays like a cynical attempt to cash in by tossing around half-baked ideas and adding more characters. Mumble (Elijah Wood) and Gloria (now voiced by Alecia “Pink” Moore) are parents, but their little Erik (Ava Acres) doesn’t seem to be a chip off anybody’s old ice block. He can’t dance or sing, so he
What: “Happy Feet Two” ★★ Starring: The voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Alecia “Pink” Moore, Hank Azaria Directed by: George Miller Running time: 90 minutes Rated: PG for some rude humor and mild peril
scampers off and falls in with the Adelie penguins in Adelieland. They’re led by “the first penguin to learn to fly.” Sven (Hank Azaria) is a self-help guru and a fraud. He can fly, all right. He’s a Puffin passing himself off as a penguin. That “adapt or die” mantra has been taken up by Will the Krill, voiced by Brad Pitt in a funny but almost utterly unrelated story. The opening 20 minutes are a random jumble of characters, situations, voices and song. The only thread is that Mumble is making the same mistakes his dad
made in encouraging his son. Humans show up and may help. Or not. Real children’s voices are used for the many penguin chicks (and elephant seal pups) who appear, which is cute. The animation and color palette are a pretty big leap forward from “Happy Feet’s” images, though the penguin faces are as inexpressive as ever. Which can also be said of filmmaker George Miller. Entertaining and teaching kids are noble pursuits, but half-hearted sequels aren’t a happy consequence of that. They’re just an excuse to sell toys and Happy Meals.
Fans will swoon over Part I’s wedding
By RICK BENTLEY McClatchy Newspapers
IF YOU GO
The decision to split “Breaking Dawn,” Stephenie Meyer’s last “Twilight” book, into two parts has created a pair of films as different as Edward and Jacob. The first half is packed with as many emotional, contemplative moments as the brooding vampire, while the second will have the kind of action that makes a werewolf howl. Part 1 deals with the wedding of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson), their energetic honeymoon and her immediate pregnancy. The wedding is beautifully staged but begins to lose power because director Bill Condon extends the sequence with a series of toolight, too-silly wedding toasts. Condon has turned up the soundtrack so loud that half the film plays more like a

music video. Instead of setting the mood, the music slams into scenes with distractingly unabashed fury. The film has such a large cast that only Stewart and Taylor Lautner get a lot of opportunities. Lautner gets the most out of the big moments, but Stewart does get her first real opportunity to act. This review is not for loyal “Twilight”

fans who will camp outside theaters. The sight of Bella walking down the aisle will be enough to make them swoon. But for oblivious people who stumble into this without having seen the others, the biggest problem is that it’s one long setup for “Part 2.” It’s like getting married and being told you have to wait a year for your wedding night.
Movie Amy By AMY LONGSDORF For The Times Leader
With the new-to-DVD “Larry Crowne,” Tom Hanks steps behind the camera for only the second time. A trio of other movies helmed by actors-turned-directors: ••• “WIN WIN” (2011, FOX, R, $29): Desperate for cash to shore up his practice, a lawyer (Paul Giamatti) accepts a fee to oversee the care of an elder-
ly client, but when the old man’s grandson and just-out-ofrehab daughter show up, things get complicated. Unpredictable, poignant and funny as hell, this is a victory for Thomas McCarthy (“2012”). ••• “MERCY” (2010, IFC, R,
$25): “Hawaii Five-O” scenestealer Scott Caan wrote and stars in this love story about a romance novelist far from romantic in his dealings with the opposite sex. Johnny (Caan) has been one-night standing his way through L.A. until he meets Mercy (Wendy Glenn), a book critic who tells it like it is. “Mercy” gets at something universal about love and loss. ••• “INTO THE WILD” (2008,
PARAMOUNT, R, $13): Writer-director Sean Penn pours heart and soul into this transporting saga of an Emory University honors grad (Emile Hirsch) who gives away all his money and hits the road in search of “ultimate freedom.” Superb on every level. Amy Longsdorf also profiles celebrities for the Sunday Etc. section of The Times Leader.

ove or stay? The question Katie Kelly, 27, of Wilkes-Barre and her local friends dealt with when planning their futures became a point of inspiration for the Ashes for Trees song “Wilkes-Barre,” off the band’s second recording, “The WilkesBarre EP.” Kelly, who stayed, has a different perspective than many of her friends’. “A lot of people I know left after high school, and when they come back they have an anti-WilkesBarre attitude, like ‘When are you getting out of here?’ ” she said. “I wonder, do they realize what we have here? I know I did when I traveled to look at colleges, like Boston and Ithaca. I wasn’t impressed by the cities; they’re just buildings and streets; what I really like here is the people.” Kelly said she has met many locals who don’t fit the “terrible stereotype outsiders have.” “People assume we’re all backwards, that we’ve got small-town mentalities, but I don’t find that entirely true.” Kelly said the area as a whole

has the wrong light shed on it. “People outside the area are hearing about the ‘Kids for Cash’ scandal, corruption in City Hall, flooding. That’s what makes the national news,” she said. “No one talks about how, when it floods, the entire valley binds together and helps every single person they can out. That’s what we’re about here.” The song “We Were Blue” is another nod to the area, particularly a type of music associated with it. “I’ve been falling in love with the ukulele over the past three months, so I took that and added the melodica, which is similar to the harmonica, and the whole sound reminded me of polka,” Kelly said. “Bless Me Father” is the album’s biggest departure. “I was trying to veer away from writing about relationships, which I find comes very easily,” she said. “I wanted to experiment by writing something purely fic-
tional.” The song, about a village condemning a prostitute’s illegitimate child, was inspired by Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” “It’s not just different lyrically but musically,” Kelly said. “The arrangement is different. We wanted the drums to be the driving force on it. We also experimented with song form; there’s a breakdown towards the end.” Ashes for Trees was formed in 2009 by Kelly and drummer Conrad Miller, who will leave the band after the EP release to pursue other projects. Bassist Vince Insalaco plays live sets with Kelly as much as possible. The Wilkes-Barre EP was produced at J.L. Studios in Wyoming. Other musicians on the EP include Joe Loftus on guitar, keyboard and bass, Terry Childers on vocals and Aaron McCurdy on banjo, mandolin and vocals. As for whether Kelly’s “stay” decision will change, maybe. “I would definitely like to travel,” she said, “but I know there’s always going to be a feeling of home here. I take comfort in the fact that I have such deep roots in this area.” ••• Misericordia University’s Cougar Radio is giving local, un-

CELEBRITY Q&A BY R.D. HELDENFELS
JUMBLE
UNIVERSAL SUDOKU
BY MICHAEL ARGIRION & JEFF KNUREK
TNT cancels “Memphis Beat” Q. We recently saw the excellent movie “The Ides of March” and wondered who the piano player /vocalist was in the brief bar scene. Absolutely no one seems to know. We stayed for all the credits and didn’t see the song title or the performer. Would appreciate your input! A. From what I can find, that was Bob Mervak, a musician in Detroit, where part of the movie was shot. (Other portions were shot in Ohio.) The Detroit Free Press says Mervak was singing “We’ll Meet Again” and playing a rented, $70,000 Steinway in a sequence done at Cliff Bell’s, a Detroit jazz club. Q. Will we ever see “Memphis Beat” again? We miss Jason Lee.
PREVIOUS DAY’S SOLUTION
CRYPTOQUOTE
A. I mentioned in a mailbag in midSeptember that things looked shaky for the TNT series, and the situation has not improved since then. About two weeks ago Entertainment Weekly reported that “Memphis Beat” will not get a third season because “the cable network is doing a little housecleaning in preparation for the arrival of its ‘Dallas’ reboot next year.” The network also axed “HawthoRNe” and “Men of a Certain Age,” but it has ordered more of “Falling Skies,” “Franklin & Bash” and “Rizzoli & Isles. Do you have a question or comment for the mailbag? Write to me at rheldenfels@thebeaconjournal.com or by regular mail to the Akron Beacon Journal, 44 E. Exchange St., Akron, OH 44309.

Bride-to-be is feeling blue because fiance hates orange Dear Abby: My fiance, “Todd,” and I have been together for four years. He proposed this summer and our wedding is planned for next year. I thought planning our wedding would be fun, but it has turned out to be a nightmare. I want orange as our primary color, but now Todd is saying he “hates” the color orange, although he never mentioned it before. I tried to get him to
DEAR ABBY ADVICE agree to pair it with a color of his choice, but he refused. Todd is being unreasonable and will not agree with me on the color. Since it mainly affects the bridal party, I feel it should be my decision. He says it isn’t, and that he won’t even wear an orange tie or anything like it. What is your opinion? — Stuck On the Color in Georgia
Dear Stuck: This isn’t just “your” wedding; it’s Todd’s wedding, too. If he would find standing at the altar opposite a line of bridesmaids clad in orange to be a turnoff and dislikes the color so much that he refuses to wear a tie or boutonniere that’s orange — then agree on some other color. This is only one of the many compromises that lie ahead for you, so start practicing with this one.

TV TALK Today
‘DWTS’ – and then there were three By SANDRA SNYDER ssnyder@timesleader.com
So maybe you didn’t watch all season. Or you watched here and there. Tune in now, “Dancing With The Stars” quasi-fans. The season finale is nigh, another coveted mirrorball awaits its new owner, and who doesn’t like the glitz, glitter and glory of a fabulous, black-tie finish? One of the season’s favorites, Ricki Lake, tangoed her way to the top during semifinals on Monday to finish in first place heading into this grand event, followed by Rob Kardashian, then Army veteran J.R. Martinez and soccer star Hope Solo. Alas, hope has now expired for poor Hope, who became this year’s cusp candidate, the one who came thisclose only to have her dreams dashed just before the finale. The soccer star was eliminated Tuesday. Meanwhile, Martinez’s pro partner, Karina Smirnoff, had expressed a lack of confidence and a desire for divine intervention after Monday’s show, while Lake and partner Derek Hough had more reason to believe: Their sambas and Argentine tangos were nearly perfect. But secondplace Kardashian kept his eyes

firmly fixed on that gleaming prize after finishing first in the relay and second overall during the semifinal round. “It’s my time to peak and just bring everything I’ve got,” he told The Associated Press. Whether he means he’s been overshadowed for too long now by his female, spotlight-hogging K sibs and simply craves more love all to himself, we can’t really know, but if you feel a measure of pity for the odd man out, cheer him on Monday. The final three couples dance for the final time at 8 p.m. Monday on ABC.
