ith one exception, all the children at the Stahlbaums’ annual party are fairly well-behaved. They dance demurely, watch a puppet show attentively and show gratitude for their Christmas presents. Then there’s Fritz, the Stahlbaums’ own son. To the tune of Tchaikovsky’s vigorous score, Fritz torments his sister, Klara, until, finally, he breaks her new nutcracker doll. What is his problem? “He’s naughty,” said11-year-old Bella Stash of Forty Fort, who will dance the mischievous role in half of Ballet Northeast’s performances of “The Nutcracker” this weekend. “He’s way jealous of Klara,” said her alternate, Abbie Ortiz, 11, of Sugarloaf Township. As Fritz, each girl gets a chance to leap about with a toy sword and, kicking and fussing, to be slung over the shoulder of Mr.

Stahlbaum and taken away for a time-out. It’s a fun role, they said. For Abbie Ortiz, there’s an extra dimension of art imitating life When she’s Fritz, her real-life sister, Alessandra, 14, plays Klara. When Stash is Fritz, 18-year-old Maggie Sullivan of Wilkes-Barre is Klara. All four girls feel at least some sympathy for the little brother. “I didn’t really like to share when I was younger,” Abbie Ortiz said, remembering Barbie dolls rather than nutcrackers as the bones of contention. Sibling rivalry aside, Sullivan said, Fritz and Klara undoubtedly love each other and will be good
friends when they grow up. Growing up, actually, is part of “The Nutcracker” storyline. “Our teacher T.J. Firneno (who plays the eccentric Herr Drosselmaier, giver of the nutcracker) said Klara is on the cusp between a girl and a woman,” Alessandra Ortiz said. When Klara and her nutcracker prince enter a dreamlike land of sweets, they encounter a Sugar Plum Fairy, whose pas de deux with her cavalier suggests growing up will indeed be wonderful and romantic. As a young dancer watching Sugar Plum Fairies of the past, Cally Richardson, 17, of Penn Lake said, she felt there was always a kind of magic surrounding the role. “She was always amazing and spectacular and regal.” Artistic director Kristin Degnan-Boonin said Richardson herself is bringing that same kind of magnetism to that role this year. “It’s more than technical proficiency,” the director said. “There’s an energy and a drive and an electricity. Cally has that, and your eyes are drawn to her.”

You can’t have a “White Christmas” without snow, can you? That was director Debbie Zehner’s thought when she went out to buy cloth petals, the kind flower girls sometimes strew in front of brides. The only problem was the petals were too big to be flakes. Enter a platoon of volunteers, armed with scissors and a flurry of energy. “We had a lot of helpers. Some of the mothers (of younger thespians) and some of the cast,” Zehner said, reminiscing on the preparation for this season’s production of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” at Music Box Dinner Playhouse in SwoyersIF YOU GO ville. This year Kevin Costley, Mandy Gambal, Bill Lipski and Courtney Hahn play the ex-soldiers and their love interests who help a retired general keep his New England inn afloat. “Our general this year is Dorrance Daniels, and he’s 77, bless his heart,” Zehner said. People who have seen the movie with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney may expect the general’s granddaughter, Susan, to be a teenager, but in the play she’s only 9. That makes a scene doubly touching when she’s worried and one of the ex-GIs sings to her the advice that she should “Count Your Blessings.” “They have me crying every night,” Zehner said.

hat both servers on duty in a small but fairly bustling – and fairly new – little restaurant in Hanover Township seem to call everyone “Hon” has to mean something. How to say this without sounding unintentionally mean? DON CAREY/THE TIMES LEADER
Ma’s Family Restaurant in Hanover Township is a diner-style establishment serving up breakfast and dinner basics.

appreciate the option of sourdough toast, which added a flavorful touch. Next up, our fan of crispy potatoes, who also considers himself a fan of plain and simple foods – down-home country cooking, if you will – figured you can’t get any simpler than Ma’s Big Breakfast, which covered all the bases. Aside from a minor issue or two – two fried eggs requested overmedium erred on the side of overlight (runny whites), and two meats were unremarkable – the breakfast got the job done. Kudos to whomever Ma is for including bacon AND sausage, he said, though he longed for a more distinct “greasy-spoon” flavor in his meats. Perfectly toasted sourdough bread slices and a healthy dose of salt and pepper, however, kept the man content enough. Ma, he noted, cannot be accused of skimping, as this breakfast also included pancakes, plate-size offerings presented in a tempting golden-brown color but not necessarily standouts in the class. On all counts, note well, the coffee was great, and Ma’s helpers, roving with carafes, were quick enough with refills. On the dinner side of things, two items stood out: homemade meatballs and homemade meat-
loaf, very diner-like, very defining, seemingly. The meatballs can be had as a two-piece side to anything or on an intriguing grilled melt, which we found hard to skip, but ultimately we had to put the homemade meatloaf to the test, and it passed. Fans of an Italian-style meatloaf, rife with red sauce and perhaps stuffed with cheese, might not be impressed. But those who appreciate a basic hamburger-like entry, so much so that the classic loaf shape is almost lost, will be pleased. Rich brown gravy of nice consistency with traces – ribbons, almost – of something from the tomato family made for a generous, tasty blanket, and not a drop of added salt was needed. The meat itself also was generous. This meal, only $8.95, also comes with potato and vegetable – the mashed were instant but buttery-tasty, though the green beans were passes – as well as soup or salad. Italian wedding soup hit the spot. All in all, a decent and serviceable meal, served with a smile by more than decent and friendly folks admirably trying to make a go of it in the restaurant business these days. Will you go shouting from the hilltops after you eat here? Probably not. But is that the intent? Again, we think not. We do think the happy other customers, who seemed perfectly content with basic things done basically well, would agree. Times Leader food critics remain anonymous.

In our minds, the din and buzz peppered with the “hons” kind of got us to thinking that maybe the food we were awaiting might not exactly be five-star, but the “everyone’s family here” and “everyone’s welcome” mindset might more than make up for that. In other words, we might walk away satisfied even if the mashed potatoes were instant and the green beans a bit heavy on that classic out-of-the-can flavor. Indeed, a meal at Ma’s is workable and filling as well as inexpensive (not much over $10 here), and the early Sunday-afternoon crowd, coming and going with notable frequency, also had to mean something. We selected from both the breakfast and the dinner menus, focusing on words along the lines of “homemade.” A “breakfast casserole” sounded all-encompassing and tasty, and indeed it was: eggs with cheese plus pick-your-potato as a base, choice of meat over top and choice of toast on the side. The choices made all the difference. Our hash browns – we said yes to peppers and onions – were better than our home fries because they seemed to contain more peppers and onions and pack more flavor, and the scrambled eggs were moist, with plentiful cheese. A note about the hash browns: These were especially creamy, which one of us loved and one of us lamented. If you prefer yours browned to a nice crisp, you might be better off with home fries, which even contained some noticeable “pan black.” Sausage was seemingly the standard frozen link stuff, cut into small coins and scattered atop the omelet-like eggs, but we did

This hot mess is perfectly played By BETSY SHARKEY Los Angeles Times

OS ANGELES — There’s something mesmerizing about watching a train wreck unfold on screen. When the wreck is a narcissistic beauty played to scheming, sour, downward-spiraling perfection by Charlize Theron, cringing is definitely called for, but so is laughter.
That’s exactly the reaction director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody are going for with “Young Adult.” This is comedy extracted from pain start to finish, with its story starting in Minneapolis. Mavis (Theron) spends her days writing young-adult novels and her nights making the club scene, binge-drinking, sleeping around and surprised to find happiness eluding her. The self-absorbed stream of teenage consciousness she needs for the books comes easily, which seems like a gift until you realize that’s how she still thinks and how much growing up she still has to do. That journey begins in earnest
when she heads home to pick things up with her high-school sweetheart, football star Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson). That he’s married and has just had a baby doesn’t alter her resolve. But things take an unexpected turn when she encounters Matt Freehauf (an exceptional Patton Oswalt), the high-school geek she’d forgotten about. Their friction, friendship and brush with romance give the film its humor and heart. “Young Adult” needs a lot of that to soften the outrage as Mavis sets about seducing Buddy. Elizabeth Reaser plays Beth, likable as new mom and patient See ADULT, Page 16

A kite and hang-gliding accident leads to Chipmunks and Chipettes overboard, with Dave and their disgraced manager, Ian (David Cross), now a lowly costumed ship’s mascot, tumbling in after them. They wash up on an island, the chipmunks in one pack, the humans in another. Each must find food, find ways to make fire and hope for rescue. Maybe they’ll even find each other. Simon, “the responsible one,” suffers a spider bite that turns him into a French-accented adventurer who goes by the name “SeeMONE.” Thus Alvin finds himself having to be “the responsible one.” These are urban chipmunks, so expecting them to know how to

And Alvin being Alvin, mischief is made. “I like my tails shaken, not stirred,” The Big A (voiced by Justin Long) chirps as he dons a tux and sneaks out to hit the casino. or much of cinema history, movies have had the good sense to keep Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis Professor Moriarty off camera, a menace made all the more menacing by invisibility.
Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” puts the infamous Professor M. face to face with Holmes. They parry, threaten and play chess. But as the unimposing Jared Harris plays the evil genius, you can’t help wondering why Robert Downey Jr. doesn’t just dope-slap this shrimp and “crack on.” It’s not fatal miscasting. “Game of Shadows” is still a romp, albeit an overlong one. But Hitchcock’s maxim — “Good villains make good thrillers” — holds true. Downey is more Chaplinesque, more whimsical and more English in this sequel, a two-fisted See SHERLOCK, Page 16

‘Cinderella’ musical from 1965 on DVD Q. I am looking for the movie that was on television in the 1960s that was a musical of “Cinderella.” It starred Lesley Ann Warren (as Cinderella) and “General Hospital’s” Stuart Damon (as the prince), I think? Please let me know if it is available for rental anywhere. A. The production you remember originally aired in 1965 on CBS. It had songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein and a cast that also included Ginger Rogers, Jo Van Fleet, Walter Pidgeon and Celeste Holm. While I do not know what is carried by your local rental outlet, I can tell you that it was released on DVD in 2003. It appears that it is not currently in distribution, but you may be able to find old copies. I also spotted it in the listings for one of our local libraries.
PREVIOUS DAY’S SOLUTION
Q. In the series “Nikita,” is Michael (Nikita’s partner) the SAME person who played the villain in the last “Die Hard” movie? Incidentally, Maggie Q (who plays Nikita) was also in that movie if my memory serves me right?
CRYPTOQUOTE
A. Shane West, who plays Michael on the CW series, from some angles resembles Timothy Olyphant, the villain in “Live Free or Die Hard.” But they are not the same person. You may remember West from “ER,” while Olyphant’s many TV credits include FX’s “Justified” and HBO’s “Deadwood.” And yes, Maggie Q was in “Live Free or Die Hard.” Do you have a question or comment for the mailbag? PG for mild rude humor. 110 minutes, including an amusing preceding “Toy Story” short. ★★★ NEW YEAR’S EVE — Garry Marshall again directs a script by Katherine Fugate that weaves together a dozen or so plotlines
that crisscross a holiday prone to sentimentalizing. PG-13 for language, including some sexual references. 117 minutes. ★ 1/2 THE SITTER — Jonah Hill, world’s worst babysitter. Must have sounded like such magic that director David Gordon Green and company grabbed the first three brats they saw on the street, shoved them in a minivan with Hill and started filming. R for crude/sexual humor, pervasive language, drug material and some violence. 81 minutes. ★ 1/2
tend to make the most of it.” That entails derailing the honeymoon. Holmes has pieced together the puzzle that is the powder keg of Europe in 1891, and all the fuses lead back to the megalomaniac Moriarty. An age of anarchists, Cossack assassins and a new military-industrial complex raises the stakes. Ritchie takes his slow-motion violence fetish to artful new extremes and treats us to more scenes in which Holmes’ peerless powers of concentration and perception give him an almost super-
natural ability to play through the variables in a coming fight in his mind, before actually martialarts-ing his way past the evil henchman. Downey and Law click like a polished comedy team, with Law more than holding his own with Downey’s hilarious excesses. If only the recycled Bond-film gadgets and Bond-film plot line didn’t weigh this down. If only they’d spent the cash on a bad guy with stature. Playing this “Game” might have been even more fun.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN — PART 1 — Laughter is
there, in all the wrong places, in the fourth movie in the freakishly popular girl-vamp-wolf love triangle series. PG-13 for imagery, violence, sexuality/ partial nudity and thematic elements. 117 minutes. ★1/2
Oswalt is required to play the beast, the gimp for whom no one who looks like Mavis should ever fall. He’s bitter about more than the fact that a brutal beating in high school left him nearly dead, the limp and cane constant reminders. Oswalt is able to work
the very raw deal Matt has been given to devastating and cynically and comically superb effect. Though this is very unlike “Juno,” the film does share the distinctive voice of its writer. In Mavis, Cody is giving us another unexpected sort of female protagonist. Her great fondness for flaws allows us to empathize with the appalling, to savor the humor in the foibles. Reitman continues to refine his imprint, a light touch on dark comedy. He is so completely at ease in the quirky, gritty worlds Cody creates that it helps us deal with all this discomfort.
Go Go’s “Vacation” and the campfire favorite, “Kumbaya.” The gags and the jokes are pretty tame, and the script relies a bit too heavily on “Oh no you DIDN’T” sass. It’s about what you’d expect from a chipmunks movie directed by the fellow who handled “Surviving Christmas” and “Shrek Forever After.”
But the message — about giving kids responsibility — and the tone make it hard to hate on these “Chip-Wrecked” chipmunks. At least they took the time to sum up the whole movie in one Chipetteto-Chipmunk put-down: “You can make all the jokes you want, Alvin, but you can’t make this interesting.”
What: “Young Adult” ★★★ Starring: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt Directed by: Jason Reitman Rated: R for language and some sexual content Running time: 94 minutes
By AMY LONGSDORF For The Times Leader
In honor of Ed Helms’ performance in the new-to-DVD “Hangover: Part II,” we offer up a look at other “Office” stars outside of “The Office.” ••• “A LITTLE HELP” (2011, IMAGE, R, $29): With a quiet yet intense performance, Jenna Fischer (a.k.a. Pam) dominates every frame of this engaging dramedy about a Long Island dental hygienist whose life is showing signs of decay. Her husband (Chris O’Donnell) is cheating on her, and her family (Lesley Ann Warren, Brooke Smith) are all bossy scolds. Surprisingly delicate and poignant, “A Little Help” works miracles with its thin premise thanks to deft characterizations and a staunch refusal to tidy up every loose end. ••• “BAD TEACHER” (2011, SONY, R, $30): Hot on the stiletto heels of “Bridesmaids” comes another laughfest that does a great job proving that guys shouldn’t be allowed to corner the market
on crudeness. A game Cameron Diaz stars as a teacher who’ll do anything to raise money for a boob job, including trying to land a sugar daddy. With a scene-stealing turn by Phyllis Smith (a.k.a. Phyllis), this comedy is a blast from start to finish. ••• “CRAZY STUPID LOVE” (2011, WARNER, PG-13, $30): A suburban everyman (Steve Carell, a.k.a. Michael) is thrown for a loop when his wife (Julianne Moore) of 27 years tells him she’s had an affair and wants a divorce. Newly single, Carell is befriended by a ladykiller (Ryan Gosling) who teaches him how to be a player. That’s just the beginning of a charming movie, which boasts inappropriate crushes, hilarious trysts and a great twist ending. Amy Longsdorf also profiles celebrities for the Sunday Etc. section of The Times Leader.
New on DVD This week’s new DVD selections include vampires, a heroic panda and lots of monkeys. “FRIGHT NIGHT,” GRADE AMINUS: A teenager discovers his neighbor is a vampire. This remake of the 1985 thriller is as much fun as the original. “KUNG FU PANDA 2,” GRADE A: Po’s new life is threatened by a formidable villain. Keeps the superb voice work of Jack Black (Po) and Dustin Hoffman (Shifu)
but adds to the brilliant vocal cast, too. “RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES,” GRADE D: James Franco plays a scientist who creates a formula that makes monkeys and apes smarter. He never expected them to get smart enough to go from pets to protagonists.

Funny-enough girls By SANDRA SNYDER ssnyder@timesleader.com
OK, so you’ve heard not a peep out of this writer about two new fall shows starring a certain two comediennes (or comediennes of sorts), perhaps because said writer was certain the two shows would never make it. Too goofy. And too predictable. If “Free Agents” and “How To Be A Gentleman” barely made it past the starter’s circle, how could “The New Girl” and “Whitney” possibly survive? Make that thrive. At this point in the season, the point we call “mid-season,” the casual viewer can almost get it. Both Whitney (Whitney Cummings) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel, beloved cornball) are just offbeat enough without going overboard to bring audiences back. Even the cynics (yours truly) are coming around. Notable episodes of late: • Whitney brings a “replacement” dog home to her live-in paramour (Chris D’Elia) with whom she’s in a “committed, long-term relationship” but they just don’t believe in marriage, that’s all, though try explaining that to the folks who decide whether you’re suitable adoptive parents for a canine requiring a stable home. Translation: You might get one, but he’ll be very old, very blind, have one of those
lampshade thingys around his neck, and we can’t guarantee you he’ll live more than a week. He didn’t. But the episode was funny (and sad) enough to explain why “Whitney” lives, even if all Deschanel she and Alex ever do is talk about how they really should spice up their relationship, if they truly, you know, cared to. • Then we Cummings have Jess (Deschanel), “just Jess,” who does nothing but try to spice up her relationships, or lack thereof. Case in point? The recent “Bad In Bed” episode, in which the poor thing learned the hard way that body chains might just be one of 50 ways to make a lover leave you, especially if he prefers a good (and goofy) girl. OK, I said it. These shows are decent. On occasion even good. But, you understand, sometimes even a jury of one simply must hold out. “Whitney,” 9:30 p.m. Thursdays on NBC. “The New Girl,” 9 p.m. Tuesdays on Fox.

T
onight’s concert by country powerhouse trio Lady Antebellum at the Mohegan Sun Arena is a family affair for opener Josh Kelley: He and Lady A vocalist Charles Kelley are brothers, but expect no on-stage sibling rivalry. Josh, 31, says he and Charles, 30, are long past that. “We’re pretty grown up now,” Kelley says. “This tour is an opportunity for us to be together on a daily basis, like when we were growing up. We’ve been working out together, writing songs together, playing golf.” Lady Antebellum – Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott – is the reigning CMA Vocal Group of the Year and notched its sixth No. 1 single with “We Owned the Night,” from third album “Own the Night.” And with the March release of debut country album “Georgia Clay,” Josh Kelley is on his way to stardom himself. “All of this work we’ve been doing has just made our show so big and so promising,” Kelley says. Yet it’s clear he counts his family as his greatest gift. He and wife Katherine Heigl, movie star and ex-“Grey’s Anatomy” actress, are the adoptive parents of 3-year-old Naleigh. “It’s the best thing in the world. She’s a total daddy’s girl, and she does everything with me. She’ll come to the studio and we’ll jam, hitting the drums and playing the piano,” Kelley says. He composed “Naleigh Moon,” on “Georgia Clay,” as a tribute to his child. He and Heigl filmed a video for the song, slated to be the album’s next single. “Just for fun, me and Katie made this video and got our friends to film me, Katie and Naleigh in the park, along with a performance scene and old footage of Naleigh,” he says. “I turned it into the record label to see what they thought, and they freaked out.” (Comedy fans are
Heigl
going, well, nuts over a different short film the couple made for humor site funnyordie.com about male anatomy. Google it.) Kelley and Heigl are happy to share their home movies with fans and those considering
adoption. “With this, we control the content,” he says, lamenting paparazzi. “I’m a Southern redneck, and we’re not built” for that. “They’re popping out of trees and scaring See KELLEY, Page 22

my kid. If I wasn’t worried about being sued, I’d already have taken one of their cameras and smashed it.” Kelley chooses to unleash that pentup aggression on stage, moving feverishly in a “goofy and freaky” style. “I look like some idiot out of an old 1970s show when I dance,” he jokes. “I get everybody riled up.” Including his own brother. “He stands behind us in the dark watching our show, and I can see him itching to come out,” Kelley says, revealing he makes a guest IF YOU GO appearance during Lady Who: Lady AntebelA’s set, pop- lum with Josh Kelley ping up for and Edens Edge When: 7:30 tonight classic-rock Where: Mohegan duets. Sometimes he’ll even drop in a relic from his past, pop life, the 2003 hit “Amazing.” He’s a completely different person now, he says. “I don’t even know that guy that wrote those songs then,” he says. “I’m more grounded now. I know exactly what I want, what I stand for and what I want to sound like.” Indeed, Kelley has assembled an ideal life, one he doesn’t let the road disrupt. “Now that I have a (bus) with a bed in the back, Katie can come out. It feels like it’s a real home. We put a Pack ’n Play in front of the bed, and Naleigh sleeps in that,” Kelley says, before shattering the peaceful scene: “Then she wakes us up as early as hell.” So much for the late mornings of a pampered star.

Moden immersed himself in music early on, studying several instruments and receiving formal schooling at Modern School and the University of Rhode Island. If you know what the title is, you can hear the meaning of it in every track.” Moden plans to release a documentary about his experiences with the album next year. “I moved here with a clean slate, totally alone, wanting to start a new life,” he said. “I did just that, and I didn’t want to do it just for me.
