A time for super market ads, and heroes I already knew what was published in the Sunday Dispatch edition of June 25, 1972, but I pulled a copy out of the morgue anyway Friday morning just to torture myself. The paper was filled with two things: flood pictures and ads … mostly super market ads. Seeing the ads still hurts. Full pages from Insalaco’s, Detato’s, Super Saver, and Giant markets, half pages from IGA Foodliner, Kresge’s, the Diskay Discount Store, and Elaine’s Women’s Apparel, not to mention six full pages from WT Grants in Pittston Plaza all brought back memories of a day I felt exactly like Cinderella scrubbing the kitchen floor while everyone else went to the ball. Those were the days when “cutting” and “pasting” – two things anyone who has a computer does all the time – really meant cutting and pasting. That’s how ads were composed back then and the chief cutter

and paster at the Sunday Dispatch was a 22-year-old “journalist” named Eddie Ackerman. I was officially listed as the paper’s sports editor, but as a guy who majored in art in college, I was called upon to do most of the graphic design as well. So when Dispatch editor “Pidge” Watson huddled the small staff together on the morning of June 23, 1972, just after word was received that the Susquehanna River, swollen by the rains from Hurricane Agnes, was about to overflow its banks, I sort of knew what was going to happen. Pidge’s buddy George Bone, an amateur pilot, was told to get his plane out of Wyoming Valley Airport in Forty Fort as soon as possible so Pidge announced he was taking his old Speed Graphic, the classic “press camera,” and going off to get aerial photos. He assigned Kenny Feeney, chief photographer, to cover flooding

on the east side of the river, and Danny Lorenzini, my good friend who was only 20 and interning at the paper, to cover the west side. Pidge had to see the disappointment in my eyes when he looked at me and said, Eddie, I need you here to keep the composing room going. He was right and I knew it, but it still felt pretty lousy cutting out little pieces of paper with things like Cascade Dish Detergent only 59 cents knowing everyone else was in the heat of the action. The highlight of my day was working with the Insalaco brothers on a lastminute ad announcing their store on Kennedy Boulevard would be open Sunday ‘til 7 p.m. and would have bread and milk available. I was even able to get it on page two. Yay, me. While my efforts on that exciting Friday and Saturday bore little resemblance to heroism, those of the Dispatch pressman truly did.
As we worked around the clock to produce the paper we all wondered how we were going to get it printed. The Dispatch’s offset press was the only one of its kind in the area and the guys who ran it – pressmen James “Spot” O’Donnell and Carl Rhodes – were the only members of their trade who could. But they both lived in the Back Mountain, on the opposite of the rampaging river from the printing plant. All bridges were closed and there was no Cross Valley Expressway back then. Without Spot and Carl, all of our work was going to be for naught. With the phones out, Ettore Lorenzini, Danny’s father, made his way to each of the pressman’s homes via a series of back roads to tell them the Dispatch intended to print that night. He drove the two pressmen to West Pittston where then-Mayor Robert “Red” Campbell escorted them to the entrance to the Coxton Bridge,

a railroad bridge spanning the river just north of the closed Fort Jenkins Bridge. The two pressmen proceeded to walk over the bridge, railroad tie by railroad tie, a distance of 200 yards or more, with the raging Susquehanna just a few feet below them. On the east bank, Dispatch part-timer Bill Corcoran picked them up and drove them to the Dispatch plant where they entered to wild cheers from the staff. On Sunday morning, Pidge Watson handed thousands of Dispatches to the National Guard who took them to the West Side by boat and delivered them to residents, as per Pidge’s instructions, free of charge. I imagine many of those flood victims wished they had the means that morning to get across the river to buy bread and milk at Insalaco’s. The Cascade, even at 59 cents a bottle, was undoubtedly much less enticing.

New 8th St. Bridge lower than original by design Guardsman says new bridge designed to go under water during flood By Jack Smiles
Associate Editor
Before they were ordered off by the National Guard, the question heard amid the scores of onlookers who walked onto the deck of the new Eighth Street Bridge from the Wyoming side on Thursday was: Why was it built so low? It could be easily seen that the bridge was lower than the old one, part of which still stands just 15 feet away and by Friday morning about a quarter of the bridge was underwater. A Guardsman had the answer to the question: The bridge was designed to go un-
derwater during a flood. For 48 hours Thursday through yesterday afternoon the Bridge took a battering from debris in the swollen, speeding river. Large trees, sheds, decks, parts of houses, 55 gallon drums and more unidentifiable stuff rammed the bridge piers with resounding booms, shaking the deck. Onlookers saw a huge propane tank float along River Street in Jenkins Township, missing the bridge. Will the bridge be none the worse for the wear? That will be answered only after the water recedes and a thorough in-

spection can be made, but preliminary indications are that the bridge, while bruised, has survived. As the river rushed by, officials form the county and the Army Corps were worried that the old bridge remnants might be ripped loose and hit the new bridge, but that didn’t
happen. Thursday night after the bridge was cleared Wyoming councilman Mike Flynn and two Wyoming cops ventured out to the middle of the deck. Flynn said a debris field between the bridges of at least a half dozen coolers, a full-sized surfboard, an RV refrigerator,
blue plastic 55 gallon drums, basketballs, mixed with vegetation and large branches a swirled in a whirlpool. Mayor Bob Boyer said CNN inquired about shooting video from the bridge. They didn’t, but an aerial view was seen on CNN on Friday morning.

‘Flood Baby’ of 1972 deals with flood of 2011 By Ed Ackerman
It seemed somehow right to Tom Serpe that he’d be pumping water from his basement following the flood of 2011. After all, he came into the world right in the middle of the flood of 1972. Serpe, 39, who says he’s still referred to as “The Flood Baby” by many old-timers, was born in an evacuation center at Wyoming Area High School on June 24, 1972, the day after the Susquehanna River flooded most of Wyoming Valley including his mom’s home in West Pittston. “I was told I was delivered by an Army doctor,” Serpe said Friday afternoon during a break from tending to the 8 inches of water in the basement of his town home in Wildflower Village in Exeter, where he moved just two months ago. He previously lived in his grandmother’s home on Wisner St., West Pittston, a building that was spared this time around. “I guess I just picked the wrong time to move,” he said Friday.
Tom’s mother is Joan Gronski. His father was the late Michael Serpe but he said his mom’s husband, Jerry Gronski, has always been a father to him. Tom lives with his fiancé Christine Janczak and their children Zack Serpe, 12, Taylor Serpe, 16, and Aaron Janczak, 16. He said Christine just gave him a copy of the book “The Great Flood of ‘72” featuring the photography of John Rygiel as a gift. He and his mom are pictured in the book just after he was born in the school. “It wasn’t easy to find,” he said. “She finally got one on line.” Tom said he and his family took a ride near the Susquehanna River early Friday and came home feeling a lot better about their situation. “At least the water in our basement is clear and clean,” he said. “I feel bad for the people near the river.” Despite the flood, he said there’s no place he’d rather live than West Pittston. “There’s just something about this town and its people,” he said.

LLVSA asks residents of six towns to begin conserving water The Lower Lackawanna/Luzerne Valley Sewer Authority is requesting that all residents in Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Old Forge, Moosic and Taylor begin conserving water immediately. Water use in the six towns feeds into the LLVSA Plant in Coxton, which is currently under water due to the flooding of the Susquehanna and Lower Lackawanna rivers. “The LLVSA is urging residents to conserve water,” said State Representative Mike Carroll of Avoca. “The sewers from the six towns run into to LLVSA and are causing backups into the homes of those located in the flood zone in Duryea.” Rep. Carroll also stated that Duryea residents are also having trouble pumping water out of flooded areas because the water
has no where to go because of the continued use of the LLVSA system.

Touchdown Tommy and the Terrors to be honored WA Ring of Pride Weekend begins Friday at Warriors grid game By Jack Smiles
Associate Editor
H
ow cool would it be to be called “Touchdown Tommy” on a team called the “Touchdown Terrors?” Pretty darn cool, it was, for Touchdown Tommy Evans, a halfback for the West Pittston Rams. In his senior season of 1953, Evans and the Rams went 10-0 and scored 487 points. That was just under a 50-point per game average and was considered a state record at the time. Evans, along with Dante Bovani, Mike Liberski and the Wyoming Area 1971 Championship team will be honored during Ring of Pride Weekend, set for Friday at Jake Sobeski Stadium in West Pittston. There will be a ceremony at the 50-yard line before the Warriors contest against Lake Lehman. A cocktail party immediately following the game at Saint Anthony’s Banquet hall in Exeter. In the Thanksgiving morning game against Exeter, Evans ran back a kick off 92 yards for a TD. The next time Exeter kicked, he bobbled the ball and it rolled back to within inches of the goal line. He picked it up and whatya think happened? He went 100 yards for a TD. West Pittston won 62-12. Yeah he was fast. He was a sprinter for the track team which won four championships Evans scored 33 TDs in his junior and senior seasons in 20 games of which the Rams won 19. Though Evans had the nickname in his senior season, fullback Bernie Wierbowski actually scored more TDs, 22 to Tommy’s 16. The other halfback was Soupy Lepore Skip Sheriden was the quarterback.
Evans -- who played around 5’7 and 160 lbs. -- said the Rams had a tactical advantage. In his junior season a coach named Tom Dean came in from Tommy Evans out of the area and changed the offense from the single wing -- where the ball was snapped directly to one of the backs -- to the wing T with the quarterback under center. The next year coach Jack Jones kept the split T. “The teams we played were running the single wing. They tried the split T, but didn’t know how to run it. These guys who coached us did. They changed football in the area. They were ahead of their time.” The run backs versus Exeter notwithstanding, Evans said he doesn’t have a single standout memory. “Just that we had a good team, that was it. It’s just that we stressed team work. Everybody did his job.” The Rams closest game was against Pittston which they won by two TDs. “I didn’t didn’t play against Pittston,” Evans said. “I was sick with 100 and some fever and my mother wouldn’t let me go. It was raining like hell.” Tommy’s wife is Patricia. He has five children, four great grandchildren and one on the way. He’s 75 and that makes getting into the Ring special. “I’m thrilled. It’s a great honor. Coming late in life it’s much more of a thrill.”
Evans is retired from the Pope and Talbot paper mill where he worked 43 years. He also worked delivering drugs to nursing homes. Dante Bovani He describes himself as a “Philadelphia guy” and likes to watch the Eagles and Phillies Dante Bovani
Dante Bovani was a 6’1, 245-pound offensive tackle for the Wyoming Area Warriors. In his junior and senior seasons, 1985 and ‘86, the Warriors were 19-5 combined and he was an All-Conference player. He also threw shot and discus for the Warriors 14-0 track and field team as a senior. His best memory was beating Valley West his senior year. “They were unbeaten and unscored upon and we beat them 32-7,” he said. Bovani played one season of college ball as a guard for Hudson Valley Community College. He’s a huge Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. He has a son Dante, 9, and a daughter Mia, 1. He is engaged to Laura Dennis. He’s the proprietor of Bovani’s Towing and Service, a third-generation family business. Asked his feeling about getting in the Ring, he laughed and said, “I have a lot of good friends that voted for me.” Mike Liberski
Legendary Wyoming Area coach
Paul Marranca liked to say “academics and football go hand in hand.” Mike Liberski could be the poster boy for that sentiment. Liberski was second in Mike Liberski the WA class of 2000 with a 3.95 GPA, a three time Science Olympiad State Medalist, and the Al Ciampi Scholarship winner. At Wilkes he was the university’s only two-time Verizon Academic All -American. And, oh yeah, he played a little football. At WA he was a three-year letterman, a co-captain as a senior, and first team All-Conference as a senior. At Wilkes he was a team captain and first team on two all-star teams. He lives in Exeter and is the Manufacturing Engineering Manager of the Specialty Products division at Intermetro Industries in Wilkes-Barre. His best memory is beating Montrose, and their NFL-bound tackle Chris Snee, 21-20, for the District 2 championship his senior season. Liberski made a tackle on the last play of the first half that saved the game for WA. Montrose was leading 21-7 and they were about to make it 28-7 with the ball at the Warrior 1yard-line. The ball went into Liberski’s hole, but there was no hole. Mike was there to stop the play. “I lit him up,” he said of the tackle. “I’m happy and proud to be included in a group of such high quality individuals"
Best of Luck to All Area Teams This Season.
