elham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: People in Oman have been urged to help cultivate the culture of voluntary blood donation in society to maintain a balance between supply and demand throughout the year. Dr Sabria Nasser Khalfan Al Hashami, director of the Department of Blood Services at the Ministry of Health, says that the culture of voluntary donation is gradually increasing and ‘replacement donations’ are being phased out in the last few years. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), family/replacement donors are those who give blood when it is required by a member of their own family or community. In most cases, the patient’s relatives are requested by hospital staff to donate blood, but in some settings it is compulsory for every patient who requires transfusion

to provide a specified number of replacement donors on emergency admission to hospital or before planned surgery. Regular campaigns Al Hashami said that the Department of Blood Services and regional Blood Banks has regular campaigns to raise awareness about voluntary donations. WHO states that voluntary donors are the safest group as the prevalence of blood-borne infec-
tions is lowest among this group. “We have two fully equipped mobile units, and they are sufficient for mobile collections. On a daily basis, there are a minimum of three collection sites functioning simultaneously; the mobile unit in one location, the central blood bank venue (located in the department) and the blood donation drive (outside government and private sector institutions). So we mobilise three teams daily to collect blood from these loca-
tions,” she told Times of Oman. When asked how wide the gap between blood supply and demand is, Al Hashami said that the blood component requirements of the hospitals fluctuate and are not static which complicate matching the demand to the supply. “Overall, the current total annual collection meets the criteria for collection per acute bed. On an average, we aim at collecting 100 to 200 units per day and issue as per the hospital’s request.” According to her, the total amount of blood donated annually in Muscat (Ministry of Health, Department of Blood Services only) is approximately 25,084 units. The official further explained that the Department of Blood Services is functioning at full capacity to meet the demand. “However, the demand does not necessary reflect the actual needs since many of the hospitals may not use the requested units fully. Furthermore, restricted supply does happen and can be anticipated, for example during the Holy Month of Ramadan or in summer when fewer donors reach the donation centres.” Most-needed blood types On the most needed blood types, Al Hashami said that Rhesus negative blood components (e.g. O negative, B negative, A negative and AB negative) are in short supply most of the time due to rarity of these groups within the donor pool. “The latter is true for all countries.” Dr Salam Al Kindi, professor and head of the Haematology department at Sultan Qaboos University, also called for voluntary blood donation. >A3
