Top 10 news stories of 2013 Pat Marrujo • College Times The death of a humanitarian icon, and the birth of a royal baby. A new pope, and a familiar threat of nuclear war. In news, 2013 brought some new stories along with a few that we see every year. However, it was most notably dominated by two landmark murder trials. These are the top 10 news stories of 2013.

10. North Korean Nuclear Threats

The possibility of nuclear war between the United States and North Korea has been talked about for years, and 2013 was no different. In February, North Korea announced that they were conducting underground nuclear tests. The United Nations reacted swiftly and called for meetings immediately to discuss options.

It is believed that North Korea would like to test some more, however, they are apprehensive because it would anger China.

More recently, North Korea executed Jang Sung Taek, a politician, brother-in-law to the late Kim Jong-il and uncle to now-leader Kim Jong-un. South Korea believes that their neighbors to the North may continue testing to take their citizens’ focus away from the execution. North Korea also dropped leaflets in South Korea threatening attack.

Nonetheless, as long as Kim Jong-un

remains in power, this will likely remain an ongoing situation. The nuclear situation with Iran and North Korea should be a mainstay in front page news for the foreseeable future.

9. New Pope

Something happened in the Catholic Church that has not happened since 1415—the Pope resigned. Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation on February 11 and was done with the papacy by February 28. Deliberation on selecting a new Pope started just 12 days later and the next day one was named.

Jorge Mario Boergoglio of Argentina eventually was selected and chose the name Pope Francis. Francis, is the first Pope from the Americas, the first from the Jesuit order and the first non-European Pope since the Syrian Pope Gregory III reigned in 741.

Francis’ progressive ways have shaken the foundations of the religion. Notably, he has claimed that even atheists can be redeemed in the eyes of God, touted nonjudgment of homosexuals and promoted women’s roles within the church.

8. Edward Snowden Scandal

The Edward Snowden was one of the most discussed and argued news stories

in 2013. Snowden worked as a contractor for the NSA, where he saw top secret documents. In 2012, he met a journalist named Glenn Greenwald (of The Guardian) and told him that he wanted to show the public what he called “sensitive documents.”

Snowden revealed classified NSA documents that told the American public that the government had a surveillance system and was listening to phone metadata from the United States and Europe—even monitoring the activity of everyday citizens.

Snowden, charged with espionage in the US, is currently under asylum in Russia. Public opinion of Snowden has been very mixed. While some consider him a hero, others call him a traitor.

Recently a judge ruled that the NSA surveillance program was legal.

7. Syrian Civil War

Beginning in 2011, the Syrian Civil War began during the Arab Spring revolutions, when the countries’ citizens protested for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

The war has been an ugly one, involving the use of chemical weapons and over 130,000 deaths at time of writing. In 2013, the war was at its most fatal. It is estimated that over 73,000 people have died in 2013 alone.

Terrorist organizations and other

countries are taking matters into their own hands and have begun sending assistance to both sides. In late December, it was reported that Bashar al-Assad sent a message to Pope Francis stating that he will engage in peace talks next month. These talks are expected to begin in Geneva on January 22.

6. Death of Nelson Mandela

On Thursday December 5, 2013, the world lost one of the greatest freedom fighters and humanitarians of all time.

Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95.

President Jacob Zuma of South Africa declared a 10 day mourning period to honor Mandela, during which officials from all over the world came to pay their respects.

Mandela spent 27 years in prison and many more as a political activist before becoming President in South Africa.

During his time in office from 1994 to 1999, Mandela worked to unite black and white communities in his country.

“We’ve lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth. He no longer belongs to us. He belongs to the ages,” said President Obama in a statement upon Mandela’s passing.

Following the hubbub of the royal wedding in 2011, the birth of the first-born son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was widely anticipated. And it created an equally-huge stir when it happened.

Every day, people around the world watched and waited to get a peek at the future king of England. Then, once it happened, #royalbaby went viral on Twitter and the baby was a mainstay topic on the news for weeks.

The baby’s name is George Alexander Louis, but will be better known as Prince George of Cambridge. The world will watch as the wee one grows up and eventually becomes the figurehead ruler of the British Empire.

4. Obamacare / Government Shut Down

Obamacare, otherwise known as Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is an attempt to make health care more affordable and accessible to people who don’t have it. Though it was already signed into law, Republicans tried to stop it from getting started.

As a result, a funding gap was created. Congress failed to come together before September 30 and agree on how

to appropriate funds in 2014. Republicans attempted to defund Obamacare in the process.

On October 1, the Government shutdown began. But on October 16, it was ended by the Continuing Appropriations Act. This act postpones the new funding resolution until January 14.

The result of the shutdown was public distrust and dissatisfaction with government officials. Obamacare still remains a major topic of discussion in the political landscape of the country, and another shutdown could be looming in the future.

3. George Zimmerman Trial

The latest chapter of the story of the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin took place in 2013 with the trial of George Zimmerman.

There were two sides of the story. First, Zimmerman said he shot Martin in selfdefense and that he was only protecting himself. The other, that Zimmerman racially profiled Martin and eventually shot an innocent boy.

Zimmerman was charged with seconddegree murder and manslaughter. The trial began on June 10, but by July 13, he was acquitted of all charges by the jury.

Despite a lack of evidence, there was a lot of public outcry about the decision.

been involved in three additional legal incidents and remains in the public eye.

2. Boston Marathon Bombing

When two pressure cooker bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, the nation was shocked. Three were killed, 264 were injured and the American public searched for answers.

By April 18, two suspects were identified.

Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were now the focus of a national manhunt that lasted two days. Tamerlan was shot by the police in the firefight and was then run over by a car his brother was driving as he was trying to escape.

Dzhokhar was eventually arrested and charged with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, and with malicious destruction of property resulting in death, to which he has pled not guilty. If found guilty, Dzhokhar could face life in prison or the death penalty.

His trial will likely be one of the biggest stories of 2014.

1. Jodi Arias Case

The fact that this was not only a national phenomenon, but also a local case, makes this number one on our list. The Jodi Arias murder trails became can’t miss TV.

1. Jodi Arias Case

The story starts in June 2008, when the body of Mesa resident Travis Alexander was found dead in his home with multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound to the head. His ex-girlfriend, Jodi Arias, was the accused killer.

Opening arguments for the case began on January 2, 2013 and over the next few months graphic evidence, testimonies and details about the murder and Arias’ relationship with Alexander became front page news.

On May 8, 2013, Jodi Arias was found guilty of first-degree murder, and a week later the murder was ruled “cruel, heinous, or depraved,” therefore making Arias eligible for the death penalty. Shortly after in an interview with Fox 10, Arias said she wanted the death penalty. However, since that time, she has recanted the statement and the penalty phase remains ongoing.

Top 10 sports stories of 2013 Pat Marrujo • College Times In the world of sports, 2013 was a year of scandal. Whether it was selling autographs, bullying teammates or performanceenhancing drugs, athletes found new ways to surprise us with their antics off the field.

After a year of big contracts and legal battles, these were the top 10 sports stories of 2013.

10. Florida Gulf Coast/Kevin Ware

The 2013 NCAA Tournament was dominated by two stories. First, littleknown Florida Gulf Coast came into the tournament as a 15-seed and advanced all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. However, once the Elite Eight rolled around, the story turned into the legend of Louisville’s Kevin Ware’s horribly broken leg. Ware took a corner jump shot and came down on his leg awkwardly and produced a gruesome sight that brought his teammates to tears.

Bone pierced directly through skin, causing a simultaneous gag across the nation.

After the injury, his team went on to win the National Championship, so it wasn’t for naught.

9. Dwight Howard

Howard started off 2013 as a member of the struggling Los Angeles Lakers. However, his time in L.A. was short lived. In the offseason, Howard was the most sought

after free agent in the NBA. He ultimately signed with the Houston Rockets, and alongside James Harden, the Rockets have become one of the strongest teams in the Western Conference.

8. Iron Bowl Finish

The greatest rivalry in college sports has a new chapter. In the latest installment of the Iron Bowl, Auburn and Alabama met with a trip to the SEC Championship on the line.

The game was thrilling from the start, but nobody could have ever predicted the way it ended. With one second on the clock, Alabama attempted a 57-yard field goal.

When it came up short, Auburn’s Chris Davis caught the ball and returned it the length of the field for a touchdown.

7. Heisman Winner Scandals

The past two Heisman Trophy winners have been haunted by controversy in 2013. The 2012 winner, Johnny Manziel, was accused of selling autographed jerseys, which is a violation of NCAA rules. Then, later in the year, eventual 2013 winner Jamies Winston was accused of rape. However, both cases have been dropped and both players have been cleared of charges.

6. Super Bowl Blackout

It never gets bigger than the Super Bowl, and this year didn’t disappoint. Two brothers, John and Jim Harbaugh, met on football’s biggest stage and their Ravens and 49ers battled for football supremacy.

With a 28-6 Ravens lead in the 3rd, the lights at the Superdome suddenly went out. They stayed out for 34 minutes. What followed was a 49ers comeback to make the game close again. However, the Ravens ultimate held on 34-31.

5. Richie Incognito/ Jonathon Martin Bullying Scandal

In November, the biggest story in sports became bullying in the NFL. A debate spread across the league about how far hazing should go and when it becomes bullying. In the case of the Miami Dolphins, veteran guard Richie Incognito allegedly left racist messages on teammate Jonathon Martin’s phone, made Martin pick up expensive tabs and threatened violence towards the second year tackle.

4. Jason Collins Comes Out

On April 29, 2013, Jason Collins became the first ever openly gay male pro athlete in American sports. The announcement sparked talks about acceptance in American sports and also opened the door to

speculation about who might come out next.

In the local media, there was a lot of talk that former Cardinals safety Kerry Rhodes would be the first openly gay NFL player.

However, media attention died down in the summer due to the next story on our list.

3. Aaron Hernandez Murder Case

The former New England Patriots star was one of the best tight ends in the NFL from 2010 to 2012. Instead of continuing that success in 2013, he’s been the main suspect in a murder investigation. Hernandez has pled not guilty to first-degree murder and is currently being held without bail awaiting trial. This will likely be one of the biggest stories of 2014 as well.

2. MLB Biogenesis Scandal

Just when the MLB thought they were beyond the performance enhancing drug (PED) era, they get hit with the Biogenesis Scandal. In January, the Miami New Times revealed information that stated a number of MLB stars like Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez could have ties to a health clinic in Miami called Biogenesis of America, which was accused of selling PEDs. The scandal resulted in lengthy suspensions dished out to Braun, Rodriguez and 12 other players.

We can only hope that the evidence of your involvement in some of them will result in fond memories and not an embarrassment-fueled untagging spree on your Facebook profile. The following list should help jog your memory, just in case you need to partake in some social media spring cleaning.

Blame Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry and their toned stomachs for this one. The general consensus among young women this year seemed to suggest that the best way to make a shirt even cooler was to cut it in half. No word from doctors yet on whether or not this led to an increase in cases of female patients diagnosed with the common cold.

Grunge was back with distressed jeans, beat up Chucks, combat boots and more than enough floral prints. College students everywhere rejoiced when there was finally a socially acceptable excuse for walking around campus with greasy

hair, oversized flannel and looking like you got dressed in the dark.

8. Cutout Clothing

For those feeling a bit more risqué, cutout clothing was a great way for women to expose just the right amount of skin without being held liable for breaking some kind of public decency laws. Cutout dresses were the staple at most clubs over the summer—more than likely because of the extra ventilation they provided dancers.

7. Hi-Low Skirts

This trend could be described as the mullet of skirts. The waterfall hemline was a fun twist for the fashion-forward and also really helpful for all of the girls that really wanted to show off some leg, but didn’t want to risk goose bumps when sitting on cold chairs.

6. Mint and Pastels

Early in the year, it was easy to tell mint and pastels were going to big.

Denim, tops, outerwear in all of the colors of the ice cream shop popped up and became the rage from spring to summer. It also gave the twee and indie girls choices other than Zooey Deschanel

bangs and baby doll dresses.

5. The Selfie

Countless dissertations could be written about the selfie and the impact it had on the world in 2013. In the same way Facebook and Twitter let everyone know what you were doing every single moment of the day, selfies took it a step further and showed us what you looked like during them. The selfie epidemic got so bad that it spawned a “selfies at funerals” trend that even President Obama was not immune to.

4. E-cigs

Don’t want to get lung cancer or smell like an ashtray? Electronic cigarettes became the cheap and semi health-conscious alternative to tobacco cigarettes this year. It was more than helpful for smokers desperate to kick the habit, as well as those who were just tired of having to step outside every ten minutes for a few quick drags on a burning stick.

3. Lace

Fashionistas did a 180 from 2012’s stud and leather overkill. Lace and lace-like patterns made the leap from

underwear to outerwear this year. The fabric gave dresses, tops and even leggings a refined edge while keeping things flirty.

2. Twerking

Miley didn’t invent it, but she definitely made it nearly impossible to ignore. Her MTV Video Music Awards performance was the booty shake (more like attempt, if we’re being honest) seen and copied around the world. Partying on the weekend meant you had to be prepared for one too many sightings of inebriated club goers bending over, sticking out their tongues and giving epileptics a run for their money.

1. Snapchat

Snapchat combined the visual aspect of Instagram, the sharing abilities of Facebook and the instantaneousness of Twitter. While this resulted in hilariously edited pictures and videos, the fact that the app deleted your photos after a few seconds meant it gave way to sexters who were no longer scared of their nudes being shared. Unfortunately for them, smartphones have evolved to take screenshots.

13 0 2 f o s m u lb A t s e B n Te Ana Anguiano • College Times Picking ten albums for the entire year is not only difficult, but completely subjective. 2013 had plenty of musical surprises though, which kept everyone on their toes.

Kanye West was cryptically marketing his album “Yeezus” all over the country, while Beyoncé did no such thing. Arcade Fire donned a whole new persona as “The Reflektors” for their album, while Daft Punk merely shined their helmets. There were plenty of winners throughout various genres, but we had to go with the ones we spun until our headphones gave out.

10. Wavves, “Afraid of Heights”

Wavves are a bunch of fun loving, potsmoking, punk music making dudes with destruction and dance at heart. Their songs are all about being young and enjoying the carelessness that comes with youth. On “Afraid of Heights” they worked with John Hill, a total pop producer who has worked with the likes of Rihanna and M.I.A. It probably wouldn’t be good for Top 40 radio, but it is tight, minimally adolescent, thoughtful and well crafted.

“Afraid of Heights” is a perfect album to prove these dudes are more than just catchy surf punk. “Beat Me Up” is a semisad song that describes plenty of young and stupidly unhealthy relationships. The

song is also followed up by “Everything Is My Fault,” where singer Nathan Williams relentlessly blames himself for literally everything. “Paranoid,” “Cop,” and “Demon to Lean On” all tell really interesting stories that give plenty of insight into what’s inside Williams’ cluttered mind.

9. Daft Punk, “Random Access Memories”

We are not going to lie. At first this album seemed like a bit of a letdown. The crazy catchy and sticky tunes we love and associate with Daft Punk were toned down and slowed down. Shaking off all of our preconceived notions and remembering what year it is helped us fall in love with “Random Access Memories.” Collaborations were at the heart of this album. Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, Pharrell Williams, and the legendary guitarist Nile Rodgers are incredibly funky and fresh. Each artist brought something to the table that Daft Punk utilized to their fullest extent. “Get Lucky” ruled the airwaves this summer proving that Daft Punk still knows how to get people moving and grooving but songs like “Touch,” “Motherboard” and “Within” prove they aren’t afraid to shake things up and let their style drift. We are happy to have these robots back with new material, even if it is not what we expected at first.

8. Born Ruffians, “Birthmarks”

Born Ruffians are the epitome of Canadian pop. Their songs are positive, uplifting, thoughtful and undyingly romantic even when romance doesn’t seem to be intended. For instance “Cold Pop” is the most sexual song the band has ever released and it would probably make Beyoncé blush. The best bit is that even though singer Luke Lalonde wants to sing about knocking boots, he still has to add a lyrical clause that he will only act on his lustfulness if the lady in question consents. The entire album perfectly explains just how awkward and frustrating it is to be young and in love. Lalonde looks inwardly for most of the album with plenty of adorable self-deprecation young people can’t help but identify with completely. The album opens with “Needle,” in which Lalonde describes himself as just another needle in the hay: “I am just a no one, I’m the same as everyone/spinning underneath the sun, head between my knees.”

7. Queens of the Stone Age, “...Like Clockwork”

Queens of the Stone Age are American rock gods with a reputation that precedes them. “...Like Clockwork” is their sixth stu-

dio album, but it has also been six years since they put out an album. At this point, it seems singer Josh Homme is the one running the show and this album is big, dark and stormy, just like him. Homme has a very cynical view of the world and constantly pins himself against it, but the dude knows how to make a killer rock song. On “...Like Clockwork” he worked with Dave Grohl, Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, Elton John, and Trent Reznor. It might have been a long time coming, but it is nice to know that despite all the side projects Homme works on, he still comes back to Queens of the Stone Age to lay down some great rock ‘n’ roll tracks.

6. Foals, “Holy Fire”

Foals has been rocking the free world for quite some time now, but it seems that with “Holy Fire,” they have finally hit everything they have been trying to achieve. The album is wonderfully British and singer Yannis Philippakis’s perfectly accented and haunting voice always comes through loud and clear. The album has a slow start but songs such as “Out Of The Woods,” “Last Night,” and “Bad Habit” prove the band still possesses that incredible passion and power that makes you want to get up and awkward dance your heart out. Philippakis bares his soul quite a bit on this album, which only makes it better when you rock out to the heavy guitars and heart pounding drum beats.

5. Kanye West, “Yeezus”

Kanye West is kind of an easy target when it comes to making fun of his public persona and choice of partner, but no one can say that he didn’t rock this summer with “Yeezus.” Songs like “Black Skinhead,” “New Slaves” and “I Am God” (which actually features “God”) are alienating to non-West fans who might be faint of heart, but these songs are a couple of the best on the album. They also give West an excuse to have Jesus show up at his concerts, which we can’t hate on. West had a vision for this album and he certainly executed it accordingly along with the help of people like Justin Vernon, Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi and Daft Punk.

West always surprises with his creative lyrics and how he reacts to them within his own songs. West isn’t afraid to tackle race, perception, art, religion, politics, and his own ego on “Yeezus.”

4. Portugal. The Man, “Evil Friends”

Alaska’s Portugal. The Man is probably the hardest working indie band around. If they aren’t touring, they are in the studio working on their next album or shooting a new music video. “Evil Friends” is their eighth album in eight years and it is most definitely their best work to date. The

band worked with producer Brian Joseph Burton, aka Danger Mouse, to create a poppy-yet-psychedelic album that takes endless twists and turns. True to its name, “Evil Friends” is pretty creepy and dark.

“Creep in a T-Shirt” creeps up on you before exploding into a full-blown trumpet orgy while “Modern Jesus” is a total mystical adventure. “Sea Of Air” is intimate and quiet before bursting open and turning into a happy and loving harmonious chorus. The titular track “Evil Friends” also has the best and most enthusiastic line of the album that is probably directed at singer John Gourley’s young daughter: “Before you were born, I was already sinning.”

3. Arcade Fire, “Reflektor”

One thing that made absolutely no sense this year was the Arcade Fire backlash from fans who disliked “Reflektor.”

Seriously, dudes? What is there to dislike?

We have to agree and say it is very different from their past albums but gosh darn it if it isn’t completely wonderful.

“Reflektor” is very bold and quite personal. The beats and rhythms are influenced

by Haiti, where singer Regine Chassagne is actually from. Haitian music is celebrated on “Reflektor” and the Caribbean flavor makes it a wonderful dance album.

“Here Comes the Night Time” is an explo-

sion of joy that is their ode to Haitian street music. “Normal Person” is a slightly paranoid and critical view of humans while “Afterlife” takes a very serious look at mortality and death. Songs like “We Exist” and “You Already Know” are layered and full of tiny details that make the songs, much like the entire album, incredibly rich.

She is confident, powerful and pretty much everything we wish we could be. This album is extremely well executed and the visual side of it really takes it over the top.

Beyoncé is only 32, but it seems she has really peaked in terms of her style and voice. All hail the one and only Queen B.

Just when you thought the year was over and you could kick up your feet and rest, freaking Beyoncé burst through your living room more graciously and beautifully than any Kool-Aid man and slaps you in the face. She somehow kept her album a secret for months and had zero hype or marketing and still stole everyone’s attention. It truly is Beyoncé’s world and we are all just living in it. Her new songs are dirty, sexy, crazy, raunchy and empower-

The Arctic Monkeys have come a long way since their debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.” They still look good on the dance floor but “AM” is an incredibly solid album that begs to be put on repeat. The singles “R U Mine?,” “Do I Wanna Know?” and “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” are the only questions on the album, but are far from being the best tracks. “Arabella” shows off singer Alex Turner’s affinity for wondrous and colorful storytelling wrapped up in a rock tune. Arabella is described as a “modern lover” who is “made of outer space” and “her lips are like the galaxy’s edge” while “her kiss the color of a constellation falling into place.” “AM” definitely has a sexy, stellar feel to it that comes with an unwavering confidence that most bands never achieve.

9. “Pacific Rim”

Ana Anguiano • College Times 2013 was a diverse year for movies. There are directors on this list from various countries with different levels of experience. Oddly enough, there are actors that appear in a couple of these films. We tried to pick the best movies of the year that were the most engaging to watch. They might not all be Academy Award winners, but they certainly piqued our interesting and gave us our money’s worth.

10. “The Place Beyond the Pines”

This year was all about great performances in films and “The Place Beyond the Pines” was no exception. Ryan Gosling has been the “it” boy for a while, but his role as a criminal, carnival performer and reluctant father in “The Place Beyond the Pines” was truly phenomenal. Bradley Cooper also plays a father but his role is much different in the film. The way the two fates of these men intertwine throughout the film is both devastatingly sad and complicated. The film is broken down into three different parts and the story follows an incredible timeline, which allows consequences from the past to fully develop.

9. “Pacific Rim”

“Pacific Rim” was by far one of the most underrated films of the year. Like all of his projects, director and writer Guillermo del Toro throws himself into his work and creates a world that is utterly stunning and visually captivating. His work sucks you in and even when monsters and giant robots are the main attraction, we are on board and ready. Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba give amazing performances and each of their characters is given a beautiful background story that only makes us care for their characters even more. Ron Pearlman and Charlie Day also add plenty of humor and further insight into the horrifying world where monsters terrorize the planet. The idea behind how the robots work is also one of the best aspects of the film. They can’t just have giant military robots with bombs attached to them, no. They must fight with friendship and close bonds!

8. “Spring Breakers” “Spring Breakers” isn’t a movie you want to see with your parents. But just because it is gratuitous in every way, shape and form doesn’t mean it should be dismissed as a bad movie. Director Harmony Korine is a creep known for making super disturbing films, but his four main actresses—Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine—along

8. “Spring Breakers”

with James Franco elevate this movie to greatness. These girls are bad. They commit crimes and laugh at the misery of others while they selfishly take everything they think they deserve and more. James Franco plays a rapper named Alien who falls into their web and escalates their lives, which are already filled with debauchery. The film is colorful, bright, loud, violent and totally hedonistic in every way. Oh, and did we mention there is a scene in the film where James Franco plays Britney Spears’ “Everytime” on a piano while the ladies dance around him in ski masks with giant ass rifles?

7. “This is the End”

There aren’t many comedies that can take a cliché (the end of the world) and turn it into something awesome while still keeping absolutely ridiculous. The apocalypse is certainly no laughing matter, but when Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson are left stranded in a mansion trying to figure out their fates together, it turns into a story that is endlessly entertaining. It is also pretty obvious that the film borrowed plenty of plot points from other movies, but when literally every actor and comedian under the Judd Apatow umbrella is put together and given clever writing courtesy of Rogan and Evan Goldberg, you can’t go wrong. It is like every “what if” conversa-

tion you have ever had with your friends.

Demons, monsters, cannibals, Emma Watson and good old pop music all came together to make “This is the End” the funniest film of the year.

6. “The East”

“The East” is one of the most unique stories of the year. From the creative minds of Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, who also stars in the film, “The East” takes a look at a subculture that aims to live off the grid. But as with any subculture, there are those who take it too far. “The East” follows a reclusive group that terrorizes corporations that poison the earth and its inhabitants. Marling plays a James Bond-like spy that infiltrates the group led

by Alexander Skarsgård. Ethics are called into play, right and wrong is blurred and soon Marling doesn’t know who she should side with. There are amazing performances from Marling, Skarsgård and Ellen Page, who all want to change the world for the better but might not know how. Batmanglij directs a very gritty and raw film in dilapidated homes and stark white office spaces, but the best part of the entire film is that it makes sure to stay politically neutral to let the audience make of it what they will. ... continued on pg. 19

5. “Behind the Candelabra” “Behind the Candelabra” did not have a big cinematic premiere nor did it have much marketing behind it. Instead, the HBO film proved that just because it was a film made for television, it wasn’t any less compelling or thorough. The story of the famous piano man Liberace and his much younger lover, Scott Thorson, is utterly captivating as told though eyes of Steven Soderbergh. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon present an amazingly chaotic and tumultuous relationship that was somewhere in between the gray spectrums of love, shame and greed. This could have made for a great Lifetime movie, but instead this scandalous and salacious story was given the full depth of emotion that came from Thorson’s memoirs. For younger audiences who might not be aware of Liberace and his professional legacy, this film serves still as an eye-opening depiction life with an older, freakishly wealthy and closeted gay celebrity in the ‘70s.

4. “Short Term 12” “Short Term 12” uncovered that Brie Larson is a phenomenal actor. This indie

flick was definitely on the smaller side of productions, but all it needed was heart. Larson plays a young counselor at a foster care facility. She is passionate and patient with the at-risk teenagers she works with and, at times, it literally drags the life out of her. The film is quite dark at times, but the subject matter is one that is hardly touched on film. Larson’s character identifies with the kids in her care and she puts them all before herself.

Despite being young, she cares for them as a mother/older sister and the bonds she makes with them are important. She carries their pain with her home and brings it into her relationship. It isn’t on purpose, of course, but through the kids she helps it seems she finds a bit of vindication and salvation for herself.

3. “American Hustle” If the late ‘70s hair and fashion isn’t enough to draw you in to “American Hustle,” we don’t know what will. The stellar cast that includes Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner was absolutely outstanding.

Bale transformed himself into a scummy con artist with a wicked comb over and complicated conscience. Adams plays a woman trying to live above her means while Cooper wants to advance his

career. Each of them is looking to make it big in their own way, no matter how scummy and twisted things might get.

“American Hustle” is also surprisingly funny and witty with Jennifer Lawrence and Louis C.K. to break up the fast-paced drama occurring between the four main characters. Their lives get dirty and complicated as they try to out-con each other, the FBI and countless other individuals.

The film could have had zero plot whatsoever and it still would have been enjoyable to just watch these characters live their lives.

2. “Gravity” “Gravity” is a bit of a polarizing film; some people hate it while others love it.

It’s easy to disconnect from a science fiction film set in space with only two characters, but that’s also what makes it so beautiful. We don’t care if it isn’t realistic.

Space is something most of us will never see (unless some eccentric millionaire or a future astronaut is reading this), which makes it the coolest setting ever. The isolation of it all is utterly fascinating and the cinematography is stunning. Sandra Bullock gives an amazing performance full of desperation and fear that brings about real anxiety. The soundtrack and various sound effects throughout the film also bring the audience closer to the protagonist, who is not only trapped in

space, but within herself.

1. “Inside Llewyn Davis” The only thing harder than rejection is trying to make it in this world as an artist, and in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” both of these factors drive the movie. Failure is an uncomfortable thing. This movie revels in it. Oscar Isaac plays a man with a multitude of flaws that is not exactly a likable character, but one you cannot help but become attached to. Joel and Ethan Coen also did an amazing job putting the audience in the cold, grimy, and isolating world that Davis lives in. This world is also pre-Bob Dylan, which makes it all the more difficult for a folk singer trying to make his way. The soundtrack does folk music justice. The musical takes were live and Isaac is playing and singing all on his own—a detail that truly made all the difference in musical scenes.

Rob Klinkhammer is a 27-year-old hockey journeyman who has finally found a home with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Over the past three seasons, Klinkhammer has bounced around from the AHL to the NHL, but the left winger has found a consistent role this season in the desert. Klinkhammer has notched seven goals and seven assists and has seen an average of 12 minutes of ice time per game in 40 games this season.

Recently, Klinkhammer took a break after practice to tell us a little about his journey to Phoenix, his favorite places to eat and his upcoming wedding in this week’s Time Out. Stability: It is great. You work your whole career to get to the NHL level and to be a mainstay. Once you are here it is great, but you can’t take anything for granted. I am glad I’m in Phoenix. I think I am a pretty good fit for the team.

Last Name: A lot of people love it for hockey. I have gotten a lot of attention just from my last name, and I will take all the attention I can get. It is mostly just Klink or Hammer, some people call me the Colonel. It is a reference from Klink of Hogan’s Heroes. It is a little before my time. That was my Dad’s nickname.

Everywhere I go, they call me the Colonel.

Fine Weather, Fine Dining: I love it down here. You can’t ask for any better weather. Like, this is the winter and it is unbelievable. A lot of great places to eat, things to do. I couldn’t be happier.

I absolutely love it here. Probably my favorite spot is True Food Kitchen. I am a healthy guy, so I like to eat really healthy food. If I want to treat myself, then Zinc Bistro. I love French food.

Close to Home: I am from Alberta, so it is an easy commute. There are a lot of Albertans that come down—the snowbirds as they call them. My fiancé’s family has a house down here, we have family friends that have houses down here and my parents are retired and always here.

Getting Married: We are not technically engaged, but we want to have the wedding over winter break.

There are not very many chances to do an in-season wedding, but we love it here in Phoenix and we thought it would be a unique thing. It is kind of a destination wedding for us. She is pretty much doing everything because I am focusing on hockey.

Olympic Break: We got a week off before all the wedding stuff, but we are going to have family and friends coming in. I want to maybe take the guys golfing.

It would be nice to just take some time off, relax with family. Then after that, maybe go up to Sedona and do a little hiking or Lake Pleasant for a night.

Calling Phoenix Home: I love it here, I love the team and I think I fit in really well. I have a two-year deal right now, and I am happy with that right now. Two years will go by quick and I will need another deal, but hopefully I can get something done here. Two years is a short time, but it is a long time.

Haters: A lot of people didn’t give me a chance at any level. A lot of people said I wasn’t going to play in the WHL when I was playing minor hockey and they said I was too slow or my hands weren’t good enough. I have faced adversity my whole career. Nobody thought I would make the AHL and the whole way up. When people tell you that you can’t, but you and your family think you can, just use it as motivation to prove people wrong.

2013 is finally over, but no matter what kind of year it was for you, it is refreshing to feel as if we get a brand new start. To help us grow, we decided to ask a life coach about what we can do to make 2014 the best year ever.

Bonnie Moehle is a personal life coach, motivational speaker, a certified hypnotherapist and an author having penned two books, including “What is Happiness and Where Can I get Some?” and “Thoughts from Within: A Guide to Inner Peace in a Crazy World.” Moehle shared some insights about shifting the way we think to help us break out of unhealthy patterns and keep our New Year’s resolutions.

College Times: What do you do?

Moehle: Primarily I work one-on-one with people and what differentiates me from say, a physiologist or a therapist, is that I am more of a teacher. I don’t actually dig up too much of the past because everything from your past that is not healed or unresolved is actually coming up in how you deal with life right now.

What do you teach?

The basic underlying concept is really about self-awareness. Another word for what I do is teaching people to live consciously. What we think about creates our reality. What you think about creates your perceptions, your behaviors and it creates the choices you make and the outcomes in your life.

What are your views on New Year’s resolutions?

So many people set New Year’s resolutions and never achieve them. Most people, when they set a new year’s resolution, it is about changing a behavior.

They think they are going to change their behavior without actually having to examine why the behavior is there to begin with and what the thinking and mindset and programming that is creating the behavior... When you learn how

to change your thinking, the behavior chances automatically.

What can college students do to better themselves?

When it comes to college students, the number one thing I have worked on with them is stress, and worry, and fear, and anxiety. We are hard on ourselves because we think it will motivate us, but the truth is that it doesn’t motivate us—it is the outcome that is actually the motivator. We stress because we think there is a payoff. We think somehow it will help us solve problems and help us to troubleshoot, but it doesn’t. All it does is take away your clarity and prevent you from moving forward.

There is a way to let go of anxiety but you have to be really aware of yourself.

It’s not the situation that is causing the anxiety. It’s not the teacher, the other students, the amount of work. If you are blaming the situation for how you feel, you become the victim. You can’t change the situation and the people, but what you can do is can take responsibility for yourself.

Any quick tips for the New Year?

You gotta love yourself. You cannot go around criticizing yourself and putting yourself down and expect to feel good and happy and expect to feel motivated to get things done. If you are beating yourself and putting yourself down, all it does is lower your energy. You have got to focus on what you love about yourself and celebrate every little accomplishment.

Main Event brings a Texas-sized entertainment center to Tempe Pat Marrujo • College Times Opening its newest location outside of Texas in South Tempe near IKEA, Main Event is the fastest-growing entertainment concept in the United States.

With a new, massive 55,000 square foot building, Main Event is a combination restaurant, one-of-a-kind bowling alley, bar, billiards hall, high-tech arcade and laser tag arena. Oh yeah, they also have a unique high-rope obstacle course.

“We are the best party in town and we create an experience that suits each individual guest,” says General Manager Steve Jackson.

Jackson says the dynamic of Main Event changes multiple times a day. During the day time, it is more of a family-oriented destination, but come night, it turns into a bar setting suited for adults.

The common misconception about Main Event is that it is mainly just a bowling alley.

“The reaction we get from people is pretty amazing. When they see the technology, how well it’s decorated, how friendly our staff is, it really blows people away,” Jackson says. “We are a big entertainment center, but we are also restaurant type people who want to give people full service when they are here.”

Jackson says that Main Event is a great place for college kids to hang out because of the options it provides.

“It is perfect for a group of college kids,” Jackson says. “If some of your friends are 21, but some are younger, you can all still go out together. You can’t all drink, but you can

all co-mingle and still play billiards together and play at the same spot.”

Main Event hosts any and every kind of event you can think of, from children’s birthday parties to corporate events. They pride themselves on being accommodating to everyone.

“If somebody comes in here and they are on a date, we are a great place to have a couple of drinks and shoot pool,” Jackson says. “If you want to come in with your friends and do everything for four hours, we can accommodate that as well.”

Their best bargain night of the week is Monday Night Madness, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Admission is $10 and you can play all the bowling, billiards, laser tag and gravity ropes courses you want, all for one price. If you want to play in the arcade instead, you can get an all-you-can-play video game card for the same price.

They have an additional special that includes all the activities, running until January 20. The first one costs $15.95 for unlimited activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the other one lasts from 4 p.m. until close and costs $17.95.

When it comes to food, there are endless options. Their main eatery is a full-service style restaurant that features traditional favorites such as wings, burgers and pizza.

On top of that, they also have a New York Style Pizzeria that they call La Bella.

Butt Out is unlike any other electronic cigarette shop in the Valley. It certainly doesn’t look like any other smoke shop and their welcoming philosophy is one you will be hard pressed to find in any other business.

“I never felt like I ever fit in when I was growing up, so now I made a place where everybody fits in and everybody’s family,” owner Matt Berger says. “There are a lot of customers that are now friends with other customers. It’s a destination rather than an errand.”

Butt Out opened in October 2012, but already has three locations in the Valley (Glendale, Phoenix and Tempe). Berger says he used to deliver electronic cigarettes from his house for a year and a half before opening shop.

“As soon as I started using them, it worked so well I figured, hey, I want to turn other people on to this,” he says. “This stuff saved my life so I’m passionate and plus, smoking to me was always a very social thing.”

Butt Out has a rock star feel to it in the décor, but the lounge is where customers hang out and get to enjoy their social pastime indoors with friends. They even have game nights.

Berger is only 26, but he used to smoke a pack a day for six years. He hasn’t bought a pack of cigarettes since May 2, 2011 and has been vaping ever since.

The community at Butt Out is so tight-knit that Berger and 17 other people have Butt Out tattoos, and there is a waiting list of people wanting to join them. Once a month or so, they have a “tattoo day,” where a tattoo artist/customer inks those who want to

join the Butt Out brotherhood/sisterhood.

Besides being a destination for equipment and good times, Butt Out also has their own line of favored e-liquids made right here in the Valley. Currently they have about 40 to 50 flavors, including their newest Metal Line. They created six new flavors for six local bands and a portion of the proceeds from each bottle go to the band.

Berger knows all the bands and says most of them vape as well. For local bands Sectas, Pastries With Teeth, Black Curtain, Downhill Trend, Fatal Malady, and Chemicals of Democracy, they created the awesomely named Apple Bottom Ale, Banana Hammock, Dark Passenger, Major Munch, Scurvy Dog and Toxic Offender juices.

Their e-liquid lab is actually in their Glendale location and Berger encourages anyone curious about the process to visit and ask questions.

Berger says they have never closed a day since they opened Butt Out, including holidays, which is when they’re busiest. Their motto is to treat everyone like a friend and because of this, they have a very high customer retention rate. Berger says they want to help people through the process of learning how to successfully use an electronic cigarette, and while it might not help them quit right away or entirely, any time someone turns down a cigarette and chooses vaping, it’s a victory.

Comedian and actress Jessimae Peluso is the tattooed and totally frank one that never sugarcoats advice and doesn’t mind oversharing when it comes to the personal stuff. Peluso says her life is all about multitasking, so while she hid in the IKEA floral department behind a couple begonias, (the only place she could get cell reception) she chatted with College Times about what it means to be a girl. Peluso will be performing at the Tempe Improv along with “Girl Code” co-star Carly Aquilino and “Guy Code’s” Chris DiStefano January 9 through 12.

What’s it like to be a part of “Girl Code”?

It’s wonderful. It’s great to be a part of a show that celebrates individuality and encourages us to speak our minds, which, when you’re dealing with TV, it’s usually the opposite. We are censored. I think I’m one of the most censored on the show, but they’re just beeping me… It’s really great to be a part of a show that celebrates being a woman and the changes that every single girl goes through. It’s kind one of the first shows that talks about those changes and milestones in this format, with all these different women coming from different

upbringings and race and vocations and backgrounds.

What makes you qualified to give advice?

That’s a real tough question. We are women and we are honest. Maybe I’m not qualified? We are relatable and we are almost like the “every-girls’ girl.” That’s what [MTV] wanted. They didn’t want to hire actors, even though a lot of us are actors and comedians and improvisers. They were like, “We want you to be funny but we really want you to speak your truth and what you really feel, because otherwise it will come across as contrived and fabricated,” and that’s not what they wanted. We are all pretty true to form.

Do you have any advice for college girls?

Save. Your. Money. Save your money, bitch. Don’t go to Target every week. Stop going to Target. You don’t need that extra pair of shoes. Please, for the love of God, floss your teeth. Save your money. It’s like all those things your mother and grandmother say that make you roll your eyes. Heed all of that advice. I am here to tell girls: save your money and don’t date assholes. Be single.

Stay single as opposed to dating an asshole just to avoid being single. Being single is much nicer than being with a dude who calls you third or fourth after all the other girls he calls.

Happiness is a Warm Home Joy expert Gretchen Rubin brings it home, even for displaced college students Ana Anguiano • College Times Gretchen Rubin is a happiness expert and a New York Times bestselling author best known for her book “The Happiness Project: Or Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.” Rubin also keeps up with blog, simply titled The Happiness Project, where she gives tips and advice to help others find their happiness.

She is coming to Changing Hands to discuss her newest book, “Happier at Home: Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon a Project, Read Samuel Johnson, and My Other Experiments in the Practice of Everyday Life.” But Rubin’s revelations about being happy at home aren’t just for homeowners. Her advice is pretty valuable to students as well.

“What I liked about writing about home is there aren’t that many universal things, but one of the things that almost everyone has an idea of is home. And even if you’re in college, you have your home where your parents and family are and you have your home at school with your roommate, or whatever the situation,” she says. “I think we expect a lot from our home situations but they don’t always live up to it.”

Rubin says it can be hard wanting a place with privacy that is also engaging, or a safe place where you can plan your adventures. She says home is a place where you want to hang out and relax, but most people want it to be reasonably tidy.

Things can be complicated if there is conflict between the people you live with but

resolving it is up to the individual.

“If you feel happy at home it’s so much easier to be happy generally. When you have that place of return it’s a lot easier to have a happier life,” she says.

However, knowing just what you want out of your home can be difficult, especially if you don’t really know where to start.

“When I was in college I didn’t really know what I was like. You feel all this pressure to figure out the way you are and project that into the world, but you haven’t really figured it out. It’s hard, but to know yourself is the great challenge of all of adulthood,” she says.

Some questions Rubin recommends you ask yourself are: What do you like to do for fun? What do you do if you are left to your own devices?

“Pay attention to what you’re interested in. Think about what you’re good at and what you want to do,” she says.

Other tips Rubin recommends for students to achieve happiness are to make sure they get enough sleep, a bit of exercise, and to eat well to keep your battery charged. Otherwise, you can easily get burnt out or resentful.

“Always think about your physical experience because your physical experience always colors your emotional experience.

Don’t let yourself get too behind on sleep,” she says.

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo isn’t in the mood for any small talk. He wants to cut to the chase and talk about “Walk Through Exits Only,” his first release with Philip H. Anselmo and the Illegals.

Called his debut solo record, “Walk Through Exits Only” is laced with brash, brutal guitars that cut through punishing percussion. Anselmo screams with uncompromising ferocity.

Anselmo—who’s also a veteran of Down and Superjoint Ritual, among others— wanted to make music at its hardest.

“I wanted to dabble in something a little more harsh than Down or anything else I’ve done lately,” Anselmo says via telephone from his New Orleans home, stressing the word “lately.” “It’s just something I did. It felt natural and that’s about it.”

“Walk Through Exits Only” was inspired by “real-life events, down-to-Earth true events” and “real stuff” that Anselmo deals with daily. Although he had been working on the album for years, he just kind of went with the flow.

“I had some time,” says Anselmo, who brushed off the much-written-about notion that he’s writing an autobiography. “There was no real fucking big master plan or anything. It felt natural so I did it.”

Produced by Anselmo and Michael Thompson, and recorded over the past couple of years at his New Orleans studio, Nosferatu’s Lair, the collection features his Illegals—Marzi Montazeri on guitars, and drummer Jose Manuel “Blue” Gonzalez.

They are guys that the formidable frontman has known for years.

In the Clubs

Funk & Soul @ Crescent “I’ve known the guitar player for almost 20 years,” he says. “The drummer’s from Warbeast and they’re one of my bands on (Anselmo’s label) Housecore Records.

He’s a talented, good kid. The bass player, who played on the record, is a local New Orleans guy, Bennett Bartley. The guy we tour with is Steve Taylor. Sweet guy, tight, tight, tight musician and really, really easygoing guy. He’s easy to work with.”

When he’s not working with Philip H. Anselmo and the Illegals, he’s recording the new Down album.

“It’s cool,” he says, describing the new material. “I’ve finished my vocals on that sucker. We got all the basic tracks down.”

The new Down record should be ready to drop in the first quarter of 2014, Anselmo says.

Now that he’s wrapped his part, Anselmo and his band will hit the road again, playing Pub Rock Live in Scottsdale on Friday, January 24.

“I feel like in live situations, I’m really most comfortable as far as pumping the thing up,” he says.

Anselmo could play larger theaters or even, maybe, arenas. But he chose to perform in small clubs like Pub Rock Live.

“It’s my choice, man,” he explains. “The smaller the better. It’s fucking real. I don’t

prepare for it any differently—not from a musical standpoint, not from anything I’m going to personally do or say or anything like that. Not at all. We just fucking buck up, get in there and jam the set and really that’s how I’ve thrived really over the years.

I just go with the flow and feel it out when you get there. And let things be off the cuff.

The show at Pub Rock Live should attract a virtual who’s who of the Arizona metal scene, he says.

“Arizona’s always been fantastic— always, always, always,” he explains. “No matter what band I’ve been with. We have a lot of excellent friends in Arizona.

Country Thunder rolling into Florence with Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Country Thunder’s reputation precedes itself.

Country singer-rapper Colt Ford has heard rumblings about Country Thunder for years among his peers. Now the former professional golfer is getting his chance to perform there when the festival takes place in Florence Thursday, April 10, through Sunday, April 13.

“That’s one festival I’ve wanted to play for awhile,” Ford says. “I’m excited to be able to do that. I’ve heard from my other buddies what a great festival it is and how much fun it is. So I’m really looking forward to it.”

Ford is promoting “Ride Through the Country Revisited,” a reimagining of his 2008 debut album.

“It’s old, but it’s new, if that makes any sense,” says Ford, who recently wrapped up a tour with longtime friends Florida Georgia Line. “When I first made ‘Ride Through the Country,’ I didn’t know anything about Nashville. I didn’t know anything about what was going on in that world. I just wanted to make a country record. So I made one.

“At the time, I didn’t think I’d make one (album), let alone four. I just never thought that would happen.”

He decided to revisit “Ride Through the Country” to show where he has traveled to, musically, in his career.

“There are so many songs on that record that are the foundation of my career, that I have to play every night,” he says.

“If I don’t play them, then somebody will be mad at me. We just decided to try to do it—and do it with some legends.”

The album features new versions of the favorites with fellow Country Thunder act Joe Diffie, along with Ronnie Dunn, Wynonna Judd, John Anderson, among

others.

“The integrity of the songs hasn’t changed, but I’ve certainly grown as an artist in the last few years,” he explains.

“I was able to get my band, my guys who play with me every night, to go in there with me and do it. It just turned out really cool.

I think people who love the first record will love them both. They’re the same but they’re different.”

With headliners Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert and The Band Perry, Country Thunder organizers feel they have the right mix to stir up the dirt in Florence.

“We think we’ve gotten it right yet again,” says Troy Vollhoffer, executive producer.

“Our headliners are incredibly strong and we’ve backed them up with a good mix of hot, young talent, and classic artists who appeal to our entire demographic. We know that our fans are going to have a blast this spring.”

Besides the trio of award-winning artists, the bill also features Sawyer Brown, Craig Morgan, Mark Chesnutt, Joe Diffie, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Thompson Square, Cassadee Pope, Tyler Farr, Easton Corbin and LoCash Cowboys.

Escape the Fate and Falling in Reverse ‘Bury the Hatchet” Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Nothing good in life comes easy, and Escape the Fate singer Craig Mabbitt knows this well.

The Phoenix resident calls the recording process, and the touring and promotion cycles for Escape the Fate’s latest album, “Ungrateful,” a “nightmare.”

“It took forever,” Mabbitt says. “We had internal problems with the band and who we wanted to record with. It was back and forth. We had already taken a lot of time off the road. We just wanted to get it done already. I felt like it was never going to come out.”

How did Mabbitt deal with it?

“Jack Daniel’s,” he says. “You deal with it for so long and you just learn how to say, ‘Whatever.’”

While the recording process has ended, the promotional rigors continue. The band will share the Marquee Theatre stage with Falling in Reverse as part of their “Bury The Hatchet” tour.

The name of the tour is telling. The lead singer of Falling in Reverse is Ronnie Radke, the former frontman of Escape the Fate. Since he was kicked out years ago, there has been a lot of bad blood between the two bands and, for the first time, the acts are heading out together.

“It’ll be fun,” Mabbitt says curtly.

He continues after a sigh, “I like touring. It’s always bittersweet for me.

I miss my family at home. I don’t mind

touring at all. I have my own little process that I do and I love performing my music for people. We haven’t come back to Phoenix in awhile.”

Mabbitt says the last time Escape the Fate played the Valley it was at the nowdefunct Rocky Point Cantina.

“We played a smaller venue and it was a packed, sweaty show,” he says.

“I like all shows, but if the energy is still there, I’ll play the biggest show possible.

All depends on the crowd. I don’t want to play a ginormous show and you can barely see the people and there are ‘crickets.’ I’d much rather be crammed in a room with 100 people dying to see us play.”

The Phoenix area has a special place in the heart of Mabbitt, who spent the holidays in the Detroit area with his girlfriend. Growing up in a military family, he spent time in Peoria, Tempe, Avondale, Scottsdale, Glendale and Goodyear.

“I like it, except it’s hot—way too hot,” he says.

“But I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing for fans again,” he explains. “I feel like we haven’t done that for such a long time. The recent tours were ‘B’ markets, so this is exciting.”

For ‘Idol’ Winner David Cook, Staying in the Spotlight is About More than Fame

Christina Caldwell • College Times This might be our best of 2013 issue, but there’s no sense in living in the past. 2014 has a bevy of music offerings that, if the artists’ past track records are any indicator, will totally rock.

The year’s album releases are only scheduled for the first half of 2014, but here are the ones we’re stoked to see come to fruition this year.

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Winning “American Idol” in the Fox Television show’s seventh season has given pop singer David Cook a plethora of opportunities, including playing for the troops, touring with Gavin DeGraw and The Script on separate occasions, and selling millions of records.

But, Cook says, the best reward has nothing to do with the stage. It’s helping to support cancer research after losing his brother, Adam, to a brain tumor. Through his efforts, he has raised more than $3 million for brain tumor research and funding.

“I think losing Adam, it affected me such a great deal,” Cook says after a heavy sigh. “I couldn’t fathom anybody else going through something like that. So what platform I continue to be afforded by ‘Idol’—I don’t know how long I’ll have it—I see it as imperative that I use it as best I can. Continuing to be involved with the National Brain Tumor Society and ABC2 (Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure) is paramount for me. I get as much joy out of doing that as I do being on stage, which says a lot.”

Cook will hit the stage locally on Saturday, January 12, when he performs at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.

He’s using this jaunt to road test material for an album he’s going to record later this year.

“We’re in the midst of starting preproduction to record,” says Cook, who has lived in Nashville for the last year and a half.

“We’re going to get on the road and play the songs, which on top of us trying to entertain, is pretty great pre-production for us. We’re getting to tighten the songs up.

We’ll get in the studio pretty quickly after that.”

Cook plans on producing the album—his third post-“Idol” release—on his own. It

reflects his ethic on his latest single, “Laying Me Low.” “I got a bit of a bug for it on the last single we put out, ‘Laying Me Low,’” he says. “I co-produced it with one of the other writers. I just loved wearing that hat. I think feeling a little more invested in the end result was something I really enjoyed. I’m going to take on this monumental task of trying to do it with the whole record.”

He sees it as a big challenge, considering he did his last two records with such high-caliber knob-turners as Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls) and Matt Serletic (Collective Soul, Matchbox Twenty).

“My hope is that that rubbed off on me a little bit and I bring some of that experience into it,” Cook says. “I have a vision of what I want these songs to sound like. Being able to have that say so, will helpfully move these things along.”

“Laying Me Low” is a bouncy, pianoladen song that varies from his recent efforts, which, admittedly, have been lower key.

“The second record, ‘This Loud Morning,’ was a record I needed to make,” he says.

“Being on the other side of that, I can see it a little more clearly now. The subject matter of the record and where that record

came from, I just had to do that record.

With this new stuff, I’ve tried to enjoy the creative process more—trying to experiment with new instrumentation and new lyrical concepts. That’s where a song like ‘Laying Me Low’ comes from. I thought, ‘Let’s just write a song and see what happens.’ That’s the creative environment that I’ve tried to adhere to with this new stuff.”

Cook explains that feeling is rooted in his enjoyment with music.

“Without question I’m having more fun now,” Cook says. “I’m not sure what triggered it. Just having the whole creative confidence and creative freedom really has been huge. I don’t know that these songs would have come out in any other scenario.”

While touring and recording his new album, Cook will continue to advocate.

“I think having a bit of empathy toward a situation is what continues to drive me,” Cook says. “Adam left behind a wife and two kids. I wish Adam could see his kids now. I think it drives me to make sure that nobody else has to deal with this.”

Gardens & Villa – “Dunes” Anticipated release: February 4 Gardens & Villa will move you with a mix of jumpy vocals, classic rock n’ roll rifts and psychedelic elements. St. Vincent – “St. Vincent” Anticipated release: February 25 ‘Ole Annie Clark might be a shy gal off stage, but if her self-titled album’s first single is any indicator, she’s out to kick some ass. “Birth in Reverse” is an overproduced (in a good way), yet somehow gritty ditty.
