STUDENT LIFE

SISTER ACT SCOTTSDALE NATIVES READY TO COMPETE AT WESTWORLD LAURA LATZKO • COLLEGE TIMES

H

orses have changed Scottsdale native Molly Schwanz’s life. The ASU student finds solace in riding, which has led to four Arabian Youth Nationals wins in the Arabian hunter pleasure category. At this year’s Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, she will be joined by her older sister, Madison, who will compete with her half-Arabian horse in hunter pleasure. The 67th annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is Thursday, February 17, through Sunday, February 27, at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The event highlights Arabians and half-Arabians in events that focus on their breeding, movements, attitude, ability to perform certain tasks, and skill in following handler or rider commands. This year, more than 2,000 horses will compete for $3 million in prize money. The event will have handson opportunities to ride, touch and learn more about Arabian

horses through the HoofbeatZ USA program, as well as a shopping expo with art, clothing and jewelry vendors.

TAKING IT SERIOUSLY Molly and Madison grew up showing horses, which created a deeper sisterly bond. “We can support each other and help each other get ready. It’s been a very fun experience having your sister by your side, growing up with horses, learning about it together and helping each other,” says Schwanz, 20. On Saturdays, they continue the tradition of traveling to the barn as a family to spend time with their horses and train. Still, Molly goes multiple times a week. “I think every time that we left the barn, we were so excited for the next time we could go back there,” Molly says. “Growing up, we used to stay at the barn all day on Saturdays. My mom would drop us off. We would help to feed the horses, just do anything we could to help out. We would travel to horse shows with our trainers to help set up. We fell in

love with it instantly.” Their mother turned them on to horses. Molly, who started competing in Arabian horse events at age 9, says it can take years to connect with horses, but this is an essential part of competing. “The most important thing when it comes to riding horses is making sure the horse that you are showing or riding knows you,” Molly says. “When you are showing them, having a relationship with them and knowing they can trust you is super important.” She has two horses: Montie, whom she describes as “a very sweet boy,” and Chuck, who is energetic. Montie, 4, will attend the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show with her. Throughout the years, Molly has competed in showmanship, reign, hunter, English, halter and hunter pleasure events. This year, Montie will take part in hunter pleasure class, and he may also compete in the halter class. In the hunter pleasure class, judges look at a horse’s manners, ability to perform different gaits, and suitability as a hunter. The halter class focuses on a horse’s conformation to breedspecific standards and movement.

LIFE CHANGING Working with horses has changed Molly’s life. She learned important life lessons and values, and gained skills that she can use in other aspects of her life, such as school, charity work and pageantry.

“I think just growing up and having a bond with such a big animal teaches you about love, patience, and what you can do if you are so passionate about something and love something so much,” Molly says. “Horses also give you skills. Not always when you get on a horse is it the best ride, but you’ve just got to know that the bad rides don’t take away from the good ones.” Molly began competing in pageants in 2016 and won Miss Teen Arizona USA in 2020. At the national Miss Teen USA Pageant, she placed in the top 16. This led to modeling opportunities in New York, Arizona and Paris.

THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE A graduate of the private Jones-Gordon School in Paradise Valley, Molly is studying business communication at ASU. She’s a member of the Phi Beta Phi Fraternity. She says her strong work ethic as a student developed from caring for and training horses. “Sometimes, when you are doing homework, it can be a lot, but you’ve just got to keep working hard and working through it, and it’s all worth it in the end,” Molly says. She’s still deciding on her postcollege career, but she knows that Arabian horses will be part of her life. “No matter where I go in life and wherever it takes me, I will always be involved with horses no matter what,” Molly says. 11 THINGS WE WISH CONVERSATION HEARTS SAID L ANNIKA TOMLIN • COLLEGE TIMES

ove is in the air, and candy and flower sales increase. Conversation heart candies are staple confections of Valentine’s Day. They provide a simple pick-me-up to brighten one’s day. Most have a positive or cheery message, such as “Luv U,” “Miss U” or “Be Mine.” Here are 11 things we wish conversation hearts said instead.

11. “EATING MY FEELINGS” This conversation heart goes out to all the single people or those who just ended a relationship and are stress eating. Sometimes you just need a tub of ice cream and a small heart-shaped candy that gets you through the heartbreak.

10. “DEAD INSIDE” As a more dramatic touch on the previous phrase, this one has a comical twist. Take, for instance, attending a boring lecture or writing an unexpected 1,000-word essay due just before spring break. There is a list of things that can make a person feel “dead inside.”

9. “TAKE A NAP” Like nicely decorated wall décor probably says, “naps fix everything.” This would serve as a nice little conversation heart to slide to a friend who has been going off about his/her ex for an hour after not getting sleep. Sometimes a simple reminder to get some sleep is all someone needs. That reminder coming in the form of a cute little candy is a bonus.

8. “AREN’T U SWEET” The backhanded compliment to thank someone for a backhanded compliment. This is also the “I’m trying to be nice even though you don’t deserve my niceness” conversation heart. We could go on for days with this one.

7. “LIKE U AS A FRIEND” This harks back to our teenage years when we asked someone if they liked us or not. Normally people would put “yes” or “no” and be done with it. This conversation heart removes the guessing. Take it as an easier and literally sweeter way of

6 ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | FEBRUARY 2022

friend-zoning someone.

6. “YOU SMELL”

There really is no polite way of telling someone they have body odor or their breath stinks. But this is at least a way to hopefully make that person’s breath a tad bit nicer to bear.

5. “SINGLE 4-EVER” For those celebrating National Singles Day or Anti-Valentine’s Day, this one is for you. College relationships can be trying. It’s hard when others are planning their weddings or chatting about their forever-long relationships. Then there are the people who fall into the “single forever” category who gave up on the whole relationship thing. Stay strong this Valentine’s Day season, and get an extra bag of candy.

4. “YOU’LL DO” This one is a fun quip to give to a longtime significant other for a laugh: “OMG, I can’t believe we are still together.” Or it can also be a hilarious candy to give to a best friend who sticks by you.

3. “GET TESTED/ THE VACCINE” With another COVID-19 spike on the rise, this may become a favorite among the vaccinated who hope others will follow. That being said, “Get tested” can refer to other things, too. Leave it to the receiver’s imagination.

2. “RED FLAG” This is perfect for a friend who needs to be told to swipe left or move on to someone else. We don’t want our besties with an excessive smoker or someone who’s overly clingy.

1. “BLESS UR HEART” This snarky comment is used to call out someone — politely — for doing something reckless. This can also be used positively to express condolences. But normally it’s used as a backhanded, sarcastic quip to nicely say, “Wow, that was stupid,” without making someone feel bad. CT

A PEEK INSIDE THE PLAYLISTS OF PHOENIX’S MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE

W

hen pop-punkers Divided Minds are not in the studio creating new tracks or hitting the stage, they are in the classroom pursuing degrees. Vocalist Sean Collins and drummer Deven Pile are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in computer information systems and computer science, respectively, at ASU. “It’s been difficult, for sure,” Pile says. “With the pandemic it has helped because most of my schoolwork is now accessible both online and in person. I was able to attend most lectures or watch back the recordings and get my homework done while on the road. It ultimately turns into doing schoolwork whenever I’m not on stage.” The band kicked off its first headlining tour in November and, despite the new challenges of ensuring shows happen safely, it was the band’s most memorable jaunt. “We were able to almost sell out our hometown venue at The Rebel Lounge,” says Pile, whose band recently released its debut album, “Guilty Pleasure.” “During the show I could hear the crowd singing along to the songs while we played, and it felt like a very special moment.”

TOP SIX FAVORITE SONGS Collins: “Sneaky Devil” by The Garden

This song scratches my brain itch like nothing else. Instant hype.

“Second Wind” by Trash Boat

I am convinced they wrote this song about my childhood. “Get Got” or “Eh” by Death Grips

I am torn between like four Death Grips songs, so we will just say those two. No clue why I even like Death Grips, they just slap. Pile: “Ladders” by Mac Miller

I really like the overall meaning and vibe of the song. Also, the bass dropping in hits hard. “Self Care” by Mac Miller

I relate to this song and a lot of Mac Miller songs a lot. Just the overall vibe. “Tints” by Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar

I love the drums that Anderson .Paak does in all his songs, and his songwriting and style. Kendrick Lamar is a GOAT, and the two of them made a banger of a song. “Wow” by Post Malone

It is a good flex song and a good cruising song. I like all the car references in the song and the fact that his line about the Dallas Cowboys ended up happening a few weeks after the song dropped. “Broke B-tch” by Tiny Meat Gang

Top-tier meme song. Really strong lyrics, but 100% ironic and does not take itself seriously. “m.A.A.d city” by Kendrick Lamar

“Kingslayer” by Bring Me the Horizon and BABYMETAL

I am a sucker for weird noises, breakbeats and breakdowns. “In the Walls” by Knocked Loose

Perfect metal song, in my opinion. “Taxi” by Nova Twins

God is two women.

It brings me back to playing GTA V on my Xbox 360. I really like his style and flow on this song and how well he can craft a story.

FAVE WAY OF LISTENING TO MUSIC AND WHY? Collins: With as little outside stimuli as possible so I can dissect everything.

Pile: Either in my car or over-theear headphones. Anything with a good soundstage and good amp/ digital to analog converter to really draw out all the aspects of the song.

DESERT ISLAND ALBUM Collins: “Post Human: Survival Horror” by Bring Me the Horizon. I do not think I have listened to any other album as much as this one. (Video games producer) Mick Gordon is a legend, and the stuff he added to this album was nothing short of transformative. Pile: "Swimming" by Mac Miller.

WHAT ARTIST WOULD PROVIDE THE SOUNDTRACK FOR THE MOVIE ABOUT YOUR LIFE? Collins: The Garden’s lyrics are just my internal monologue most of the time. Probably them. Pile: Childish Gambino. He has

a good mix of being serious and goofy. Also vibey, and I am big on R&B.

GO-TO GUILTY PLEASURE TRACK OR CLASSIC KARAOKE TUNE Collins: “Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus. Pile: “God’s Country” by Blake Shelton.

FAVORITE SONG BY AN ARTIST FROM YOUR COUNTRY? Collins: I have hyped up The Garden enough, so I’ll say “Silence is Also an Answer//” by KennyHoopla. Love the dude’s voice and the work Travis Barker did on the drums. Pile: Any of the six above. They are all American, besides Cody Ko from (Canada’s) Tiny Meat Gang. CT
