HEALTHY BLOOD PRESSURE .......... 20 8 ways to better your blood pressure

t’s officially been a year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted everything, including cancer screenings. According to an analysis by the Epic Health Research Network, preventative cancer screenings dropped substantially nationwide in 2020. More specifically, cervical cancer screenings declined by 94% and colorectal cancer screenings were down 86%, compared with the same time period in previous years. The data continues to reflect a persistent decline in cancer screenings, which may result in hundreds of thousands of missed screenings — or worse yet — finding lateor advanced-stage cancers because of a delayed screening. This is why it is imperative to resume routine screenings now. When to be screened for some cancers may depend on your risk. Below are recommendations from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Breast cancer: High-risk individuals include those with a family history of breast/ ovarian cancer with two or more close relatives on the same side (especially when diagnosed before 50); inherited genetic mutations (BRCA1, BRCA2, CDH1, PALB2, PTEN or Tp53); or a breast biopsy showing atypical cells, lobular carcinoma in situ or atypical lobular hyperplasia.

Women with dense breasts, family history in distant relatives, and diagnosed in their 50s are considered at moderate risk. Most women in good health with no family history are considered to be at average risk. Recommendations: USPSTF: women 40 to 49 make individual decision; mammograms every other year for women 50 to 74; and annual mammograms at 40 for high-risk women. ACS recommends yearly mammograms for women 45 to 54; every other year for women 55-plus; and MRI and yearly mammogram for highrisk women. ACOG: yearly mammograms for average risk women 40 to 75; women with BRCA1/BRCA 2 mutation or one or

more family members with the mutation: twice yearly clinical breast exams, annual mammograms, MRIs and regular breast self-exams. Colorectal cancer: Risk factors include patients 45-plus, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, sedentary lifestyles, tobacco use, moderate to heavy alcohol use, personal history of colorectal polyps, family history of colorectal cancer, African American or Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colitis or Crohn’s disease, and Lynch syndrome or other inherited gene mutations.

any people fall because they lose their balance, and this can become of greater concern as people age. The ability to maintain balance results from a complex interaction of four major systems and depends on information received by the brain from the eyes, muscles and joints, and vestibular system. Disruption of just one of these factors can lead to balance problems and a higher risk of falling, but let’s focus on problems with the vestibular system in your inner ears that can be a common cause of falling. Patients with vestibular issues typically report symptoms of dizziness that can include lightheadedness, vertigo (feeling as if you are falling when you are not moving), feeling faint or actually fainting, or disequilibrium/loss of balance. Physical therapists look at vestibular and nonvestibular causes of imbalance or dizziness and do tests and measures to determine which system is impaired and how to help correct it. A vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) specialist provides specific exercises that retrain the brain to recognize and process signals from the vestibular system that can prevent falling.

Cancer...continued from page 1 Recommendations: ACS: screening colonoscopies at 45 and every 10 years after if no polyps are found. Those with a family history: 10 years before the youngest case in the immediate family, and every five years after. Lynch syndrome patients: between 20 and 25, or 10 years before the youngest case in the immediate family, followed by every one to two years. IBD, ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease patients: every one to two years. Cervical cancer: Risk factors include smoking, multiple sexual partners, three-plus childbirths, five-plus years of birth control pills, HPV, HIV or another condition that compromises the immune system. Recommendations: USPSTF: women

Another treatment that may be indicated for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo — an involuntary movement of eyes with the illusion of movement or sensation of spinning — is the canalith repositioning maneuver, also referred to as the Epley maneuver. This procedure helps put small crystals within the inner ear back into place, usually in one to three visits. Dizziness is abnormal and is not a typical part of aging, so it is important to see a health care professional with vestibular training to help determine the cause of your symptoms and appropriate treatment. Celeste Delap, D.P.T., P.T., G.C.S., serves as clinical assistant professor for the Midwestern University physical therapy program and supervises advanced physical therapy students in their clinical rotations at the Midwestern University Therapy Institute in Glendale. Delap is a board-certified geriatric clinical specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and has extensive experience working with older adults who have specific gait, movement or balance disorders, including vestibular disorders and Parkinson’s disease. She is also certified in the Lee Silverman Voice Training (LSVT) BIG 21 to 65, Pap smears every three years; or women 30 to 65, a combination of a Pap smear and HPV testing every five years. Lung cancer: High risk: 30-plus packyear smokers age 50 to 80; 30-plus pack-year smokers who quit fewer than 15 years ago, age 50 to 80; or 20 pack-year smokers, age 50-plus with additional risk factors (e.g., radon exposure, prior radiation treatment, particularly head and neck cancer/lymphoma). Moderate risk: 20 pack-year smokers age 50-plus. Low risk: those younger than 50 who smoked fewer than 20 packs a year. Recommendations: USPSTF: lowdose CT scans for current smokers 55 to 80 with a 30 pack-year smoking history, and former smokers who quit within the past 15 years.

3 things to consider when moving to a retirement community

SPRING 2021

N

BY LA SIENA

ow more than ever, retirement living offers residents value, services and safeguards in a supportive setting. Below are three things the senior living experts at La Siena suggest you consider when making your decision. 1. Start early: Begin researching in advance, before the need arises. Ask family, friends and valued advisers for their recommendations. Waiting until the need arises can often result in hastier or short-term decisions that might fail to meet your long-term needs. 2. Create a list: Determine which type of senior living community best fits your needs. Not all retirement communities are the same. Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) require larger, upfront entrance fees. “Rental” communities can offer similar services with the flexibility of a monthly fee. Ask for a “Value Check-

9

Health & Wellness

list” to help compare your needs and current monthly expenses, delivery services, transportation costs, meal expenditures and the upkeep of a house with the monthly fee of a retirement community. 3. Ask questions: Get to know the community. A tour or information presentation can provide you a feel for a community’s amenities; services; and safeguards, such as if residents have received the COVID-19 vaccine. But also ask about lifestyle. Learn about a community’s fitness, art classes or other interests you may enjoy. Accreditation, which helps provide the assurance that high standards of quality care, service and safeguards are maintained, is another important topic to discuss. For more information about the engaging senior living lifestyle and supportive services offered at La Siena, call 602-635-6968 or visit LaSienaSeniorLiving.com.

Deciding between home and senior living BY RHONDA THIEL

e all know that aging is a part of life. It’s unavoidable, but that doesn’t mean you want to think of yourself as old. All of us, at one point or another, are likely to need a little help. And when that happens, inevitably someone will ask the question of if you should continue living at home or if it’s time for senior living. When thinking about senior living, a multitude of emotions typically arises. Many seniors immediately nix the idea, believing their home will always be where they belong. And others, who’ve made the move, state consistently that they wish they would have done it sooner. So, how do you decide what’s best for you? Let’s find out.

Challenging the perceptions What a perfect mindset for under-

standing senior living options. We’re all too familiar with the perception of yesterday’s nursing homes, where seniors live in isolation and lack purpose or independence. We know you don’t want that for yourself, and we don’t want that for you either. Senior living communities aren’t where you go to start the end; they’re actually designed to help you start a new beginning. Take a look at these powerful facts. After moving to independent living: • 89.3% of independent living residents rate their overall satisfaction as good or excellent. • 84.5% of independent living residents would recommend their community to someone else. -Holleran Consulting LLC After moving to assisted living: • They are five times more likely to see overall quality of life improve than worsen. • 73% of families report that a senior’s

RIT helps with foot and ankle pain 12

Health & Wellness

BY GREER BANKS

D

r. Kerry Zang, the podiatric medical director of CiC Foot & Ankle, hates to hear foot pain is keeping someone from everyday living. Feet do not have to hurt just because someone is getting older or hasn’t had relief from other treatments. “Regenerative medicine is one of the most exciting and effective breakthroughs to come along,” Zang said. “It doesn’t matter if you are suffering from arthritis, an old injury, Achilles tendonitis, heel pain or plantar fasciitis, pain after surgery, the list goes on and on. Regenerative medicine may be able to help.” Regenerative injection therapy (RIT) uses growth factors to help repair and restore tissue, ligaments and joints. Until recently, anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections, like cortisone, offered the best chance

for relief. But these options just reduced the symptoms. “While cortisone stops the swelling and pain, it can also interfere with the healing process, and more damage can occur,” Zang explained. RIT addresses the underlying problem causing the pain. It helps the body initiate its own healing response. “Sometimes the body just needs a little boost to encourage the regenerative or healing process. The growth factors in RIT do that,” Zang said. Zang recognizes patients are sometimes skeptical. “I’ve seen excellent results. RIT has great potential to offer relief,” Zang said. One of his patients had been suffering for three years, and surgery was not an option. After RIT, the patient reported, “I haven’t noticed any pain. This is an unbelievable outcome. I thought this could never happen.”

PAD: The Silent Killer “PAD is often called the silent killer because you may have it and not even know,” says Dr. Joel Rainwater, chief medical officer of Comprehensive Integrated Care (CiC). The reason it is sometimes missed is because people dismiss the symptoms of this dangerous disease as ‘just a sign of getting older’. But it’s not. “It’s not normal to have difficulty walking to your mailbox, it’s not normal to have constant leg pain or cramping,” says Rainwater, “That’s not normal aging, it could be a sign of PAD.” While many of us tend to think it’s just “too many birthdays” because you can’t remember an injury or reason, your symptoms may be due to poor circulation or vascular insufficiency. PAD is a circulation disorder and those with it are at a much higher risk of heart problems and generally have a much higher rate of amputations and death from heart attack or stroke. “If there’s poor blood flow to

Dr. Rainwater has focused his medical career on educating the public and his fellow physicians to recognize PAD and start treatment as quickly as possible.

PAD is caused by the buildup of fatty material inside the arteries, limiting blood flow.

your legs and feet, you’ll have pain, cramping or wounds that won’t heal,” explains Rainwater. If you ignore these signs, it may lead to an amputation. “If you get an amputation because you have PAD, your life expectancy is worse than if you had breast cancer or lymphoma. PAD is no joke.” In some cases, people have been diagnosed with, or think they have, neuropathy. The symptoms of neuropathy and PAD are very similar and include difficulty walking without taking a break, burning, tingling, numbness and/or pain. “When I see a patient who has been told they have neuropathy and they’ve been maximized on medication that’s not working, I know there may be something else causing it and one of the big, notorious offenders in that scenario is PAD,” says Rainwater. PAD is caused by the buildup of fatty material inside the arteries. This buildup occurs gradually over time and hardens into plaque inside the artery. This condition is

known as atherosclerosis. Sometimes, it’s called “hardening of the arteries.” No matter what you call it, this plaque causes a narrowing of the passageway, restricting the amount of blood that flows throughout the body. Without an adequate blood supply, your body can’t get the oxygen and nutrients it needs to maintain healthy legs, feet and toes. “This is something we can fix,” explains Rainwater. “The good news about PAD, is that there’s hope. There is treatment and it’s excellent, it’s been one of the biggest success stories in all of medicine.” Patients are able to get back on their feet and every day living with almost no downtime, not stitches and no overnight hospital stay. Medicare as well as most insurance plans will cover treatment. Rainwater says, “The method of diagnosis, the treatment was unheard of 20 years ago. It’s become so sophisticated and so easy for the patient to tolerate that there’s no reason not to seek answers for this condition.”

Is Neuropathy about to make you crack? If medication hasn’t stopped the tingling, pain and numbness in your feet, you may be one of the countless people who are misdiagnosed each year. Symptoms of neuropathy often feel very similar to symptoms of poor circulation in your legs and feet. It’s time to start asking questions.

Y/N

Do you have difficulty walking without taking a break? Do your feet feel numb, or your legs cramp in bed at night? Do you experience pain, tingling, or numbness in your feet? Is your neuropathy treatment not making symptoms go away? Does pain in your feet keep you from everyday living? If you checked “yes” to any of the questions above, our doctors can help tell you what those answers mean. Call 602-954-0777 to make an appointment.

ctive-duty members and their spouses who are expecting a baby, or new mothers assigned to an Air Force installation, are encouraged to contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center to sign up for a Bundles for Babies/Kids Ride Safe class. Parents can receive a free car seat and learn about proper installation in their vehicle, parenting skills and finances; meet other expectant parents; and receive a bundle of supplies. That includes a large canvas tote bag with the AFAS logo, a thermal receiving blanket, a hooded towel and washcloth, a white knit crib sheet, a printed knit crib sheet, a three-pack sleep-n-play, a fivepack onesies, two pairs of booties, two bibs and three burp cloths. Classes are open to all ranks and are not limited to a first pregnancy. The transition from singlehood to married life is tough, and marrying a military member can pose its own unique challenges. Heart Link is a pro-

gram designed to familiarize civilian spouses with the military and alleviate some of these issues. From military protocol to traditions and lingo, Heart Link teaches civilian spouses what their military counterparts deal with daily. Spouses are introduced to the military community. They have an important role to play: keeping up the home front while their spouses are deployed and being a source of support for the airmen. Heart Link, which is geared toward newlyweds, is designed to help connect military members with their spouses. By integrating spouses into the military, it helps to enhance mission readiness. Participants learn about military protocol and military and Air Force traditions, including the role of coining and the Air Force song. Learning these things helps them understand military culture. ing military support programs worldwide. Through the MFLC Program, licensed clinical providers assist service members and their families with issues they may face through the cycle of deployment — from leaving their loved ones and possibly living and working in harm’s way to reintegrating with their community and family. The MFLC program provides support for a range of individual and family issues. Psychoeducational presentations on reunion/reintegration, stress/ coping, grief/loss and deployment are provided to commands, Family Readiness Groups, Soldier Readiness Processing and other requested locations. MFLC support is also provided to the Child and Youth Program and specifically for the summer DoDEA/CYP summer enrichment program. Support for these issues empowers individuals during the problem-solving process, increases individual and

family competency and confidence in handling the stressors of military life, and ensures that issues do not impair operational readiness. The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is designed to provide support to military family members with special needs. EFMP services include a variety of personnel, medical and family support functions. The Exceptional Family Member Program- Family Support (EFMP-FS) is a community support function provided by the Airman & Family Readiness Center that includes, but is not limited to, on- and off-base information and referral, parent training, support group, relocation assistance, financial management and school information. W

e opened the doors in 2001, being the first 12-week program in the state of Arizona. We are licensed by the State Post Secondary School of Education and are approved for funding by many state agencies. It is our endeavor to prepare individuals with the knowledge and technical proficiency that will allow them to become immediately employable in a dental office upon graduation. It is our objective to offer the best possible education in the shortest possible time consistent with proper educational procedures. Students are accepted regardless of sex, race, age, marital status, religious creed, ethnic or national origin. There are many opportunities available to welltrained individuals in the dental profession. It is our desire to train chairside dental assistants to assume the many positions available in the den-

tal field. Modern dentistry requires the assistance of dental assistants well schooled in four-handed or sitdown dentistry. It is very difficult for dentists today to treat their patients without proper chairside assistance. The Arizona School of Dental Assist-

ing is dedicated to the ideal of developing efficient, effective dental assistants through a competency-based program. For more information, call the Arizona School of Dental Assisting at 602-6787061 or visit azdentalassistants.com.

enevilla recently celebrated its 40th year of promoting health and independence by providing supportive services. The not-for-profit senior and family services agency was founded in 1981 by Sun Cities citizens out of concern that local services were not readily available to the community’s residents. Forty years ago this May, Benevilla formed as Sun Cities Area Interfaith Services Inc. and was established as a nonprofit, nonsectarian agency with 30 volunteers, who helped with errands and home care services. With a handful of employees, IFS grew into Benevilla, a network of Life Enrichment Day Programs, comprehensive care-management programs, free support and educational services across the Northwest Valley. It is all supported by more than 500 volunteers and 100-plus employees seeking to help keep senior citizens and families independent in their own homes.

Benevilla provides many support services, including: • Three Life Enrichment Day Programs providing care for older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia, survivors of stroke, Parkinson’s disease and fall-related injuries located in Surprise, Sun City and Peoria. • Two Life Enrichment Day Programs for adults with disabilities at locations in Sun City and Peoria. • A safe, family-friendly learning environment at Wirtzie’s Preschool and Child Care in Surprise, including the unique Intergenerational Program. • Free home services for seniors and homebound adults supported by generous volunteers who run errands, provide grocery shopping, assisted transportation services to medical appointments, basic handyman services, business assistance, and visitor and phone check-ins. • Caregiver support through Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. Talk with your doctor about FDA-approved options that can help further reduce your heart risk if you already take statins. For more information about cardiovascular disease and what you can do, look for #RethinkCVRisk on social media or visit truetoyourheart.com. Truths and falsehoods about heart disease risk 1. Statins reduce your chance of experiencing a cardiovascular event by up to 90%. False. Statins, diet and exercise can lower your risk by about 25% to 35%, but for many patients, controlled cholesterol doesn’t eliminate cardiovascular risk. This residual risk, or “persistent CV risk,” puts millions of patients at risk and has been the focus of therapeutic development for many years. 2. Managing high triglycerides along with taking statins is enough to reduce your risk.

oil to help manage cardiovascular risk. However, supplements contain only 30% of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), with the majority of the product consisting of non-omega-3 ingredients, including saturated fats. Some data suggests certain ingredients in dietary supplement fish oils, such as DHA and saturated fats, may raise bad cholesterol. While high triglycerides are an indicator of cardiovascular risk, lowering them won’t necessarily reduce your risk. However, addressing the underlying causes of high triglycerides can help, according to the AHA.

Treatment options With ongoing research, new standards of care are emerging. High cholesterol is a key cardiovascular risk factor with statins currently the first-line therapy for lowering cholesterol. Statins, diet and exercise can lower your cardiovascular risk by about 25% to 35%, but, for many people, controlled cholesterol doesn’t eliminate CV risk. This residual risk, or “persistent

For example, earlier-generation medicines prescribed to lower triglycerides, like fenofibrates and niacin, failed to show clinical benefit when used with statins to reduce cardiovascuar risk. In fact, the FDA withdrew approval for fenofibrates and niacin in combination with statins because they add potential risk with no proven benefit to heart health. 3. Fish oil supplements are a proven way to get protection from a cardiovascular event. False. Fish oil supplements are not FDA-approved medicines intended to

treat or prevent a medical condition. Despite multiple clinical studies, these products have not been proven to reduce cardiovascular risk on top of current medical therapies, including statins. 4. Having a first cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, puts you at greater risk to suffer another. True. Having a cardiovascular event makes you more likely to suffer another. That’s why it’s important to protect against a first cardiovascular event or future events. To closely monitor your heart health, stay in close contact with your doctor and reduce your risk by keeping up with your medications, exercising and sticking to a healthy diet.

Insurance may authorize coverage for a simple outpatient surgery that would minimize all of those problems, helping patients regain vision, confidence and even a more youthful appearance. Health insurance can be applied toward a popular procedure called upper eyelid blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an “eyelid lift.” “I have spoken to many patients who get headaches from dealing with the need to hold up their drooping eyelids, often using their brow or even at times their hands to open their eyes,” said Dr. Emilio M. Justo, founder and medical director, Arizona Eye Institute & Cosmetic Laser Center. “In the morning, or when it is especially hot, eyelids may even stick together.

It’s more common than you think, among all ages.” Some patients stop driving because they cannot do so safely any longer. Others grow tired simply reading a book or watching TV, because droopy eyelids make us work hard to do something most of us take for granted — see clearly. Patricia Mealy had a scare that she said led her to realize how important eyelid surgery was. “I was on the freeway, and I was crossing into other people’s lanes,” she said. “When I realized, I stopped driving as much and lost a lot of my independence, until I had eyelid surgery.” When upper eyelids become droopy, they begin to impact your peripheral vision. That is a serious life and safety concern. The change is often so gradual that you don’t realize you are doing it until you learn about how easy it is to fix droopy lids. The procedure is a 20-minute outpatient surgery that Justo routinely performs in his fully accredited ambulatory surgical center. “I use a CO2 laser to safely remove

Patients will often love the look of their results, and their more youthful appearance, but what is most important to them, and to Justo as their surgeon and physician, is the quality of life that they regain. Many patients opt to also get their lower eyelid surgery as well, although it is not authorized through insurance. Joan Schill is one such patient who

chose to get upper and lower eyelid surgery to eliminate droopy upper lids and bags under her eyes that made her feel older and more tired. “I am very happy with the results,” she said. “I look better with my eyes not so closed and puffy. Utilizing specialized classes and weekly schedules is what sets Glencroft apart from others. They hope to take what they are learning through this holistic, immersive approach and create an ongoing, customizable platform that enables us to work with clients from all over the country — making Glencroft Center for Modern Aging a destination where living is the goal.
