The city of Fontana’s $1.6 million First Responders Memorial is still under design with construction to begin in spring 2026.
The memorial pays tribute to the first responders who risked their lives to rescue and protect civilians during the Sept. 11 attacks. The memorial will incorporate a fragment of the World Trade Center’s structure into its design. It will be built around the existing roundabout fountain in the Civic Center Campus at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and Wheeler Avenue.
Mayor Acquanetta Warren said that using a fragment of the World Trade Center poses design concerns.
“Bringing the memorial to fruition, which incorporates an actual fragment of the World Trade Cen-
ter, presented a few challenges,” Warren said.
“Incorporating the beam into the design required a specific structural detail that significantly increased the overall expense. This necessitated a redesign and relocation of the memorial to accommodate the fragment properly while ensuring the design was structurally sound and aesthetically respectful. Despite these challenges, the new design and location were carefully planned to keep costs in line with the current approved budget, ensuring that the project remained financially feasible without compromising the memorial’s integrity and purpose.”
According to the city’s website, the goal is to “create a poignant connection with the past while honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those heroes.
“This memorial not only pays homage to the courageous indi-
viduals who lost their lives, but it also serves as a symbol of hope and resilience. By immortalizing a fragment of the World Trade Center, we are reminded of the strength of the human spirit and our collective ability to rise above adversity.”
The city said that it wants visitors to become inspired by the First Responders Memorial and its message of hope.
“Through this commemoration, we strive to ensure that their memories live on, serving as a source of inspiration for generations to come,” it reads. “The Fontana First Responders Memorial invites visitors to reflect, remember and find solace in the midst of tragedy. It stands as a beacon of unity and resilience, reminding us that even in the face of darkness, our shared humanity can bring forth light and hope for a better tomorrow.”
Sierra Avenue, spanning from Foothill Boulevard to Baseline Avenue, is wrapping up its nearly two-year, $8 million construction project.
With an expected completion this summer, the street will have six lanes and offer improved access between Downtown Fontana, North Fontana and the State Route 210 corridor. Other improvements include additional curbs and gutters, sidewalks, a raised landscape median, a storm drain and a new
traffic signal at the intersection of Sierra and Reed.
Another benefit is improved traffic flow, with newly added left-turn lanes and upgraded traffic signals at the intersections of Foothill Boulevard, Miller Avenue and Baseline Avenue. According to the city’s Capital Improvement Projects, these additions contribute to the master plan for circulation, which specifies Sierra Avenue as a “modified major highway” due to its increased traffic flow.
The updated sidewalks will increase accessibility for pedestrians, seniors and people with disabilities or those using wheelchairs. The previous sidewalks were disconnected, with uneven placement and buckling. The project will add continuous sidewalks, bicycle lanes and curb and driveway ramps on both sides of Sierra Avenue. Existing curb ramps will be upgraded to meet current Americans with
Disabilities Act standards.
Aesthetic improvements are included as well. The city website notes there is minimal landscaping and no representation of “community pride” along the roadway. The project added a raised and landscaped median area that will reduce points of driving conflict for left-turn and U-turn movements.
Once these improvements are completed, the project needs to go through the utility relocation phase. This involves moving underground or overhead utilities that may have been affected by construction. Utilities like cable, telephone and electricity wiring as well as sewer, water or gas lines may need to be adjusted to accommodate the additions.

The Fontana City Council voted 6-1 on July 23 to extend its moratorium on the planning and construction of a Planned Parenthood center.
The one vote against the extension came from Councilmember Jesus Sandoval.
Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino County signed a lease in 2022 that would allow it to build a facility in Downtown Fontana. After Planned Parenthood spent a year filing permits and designs for the new facility, the Fontana City Council approved an urgency ordinance.
The ordinance prohibited “service-based, nonentertainment uses” in the area of the proposed Planned Parenthood. The city council said the Fontana General Plan states that Downtown should be a “hub for dining, shopping and entertainment.”
The reasoning given was not satis-
factory enough for Planned Parenthood, which filed a lawsuit against the city. Planned Parenthood argued the city council illegally added the entertainment hub section to its general plan to specifically target Planned Parenthood and its proposed facility.
The court hearing was scheduled for July 25, but has been pushed to Aug. 25.
“We will continue to challenge this moratorium on behalf of all Fontanans, who deserve better health care and education in their communities,” Planned Parenthood said.
“At Planned Parenthood, we welcome every patient who walks through our doors, regardless of health insurance, immigration status or ability to pay. Our entire medical team looks forward to someday welcoming patients to this health center and helping them to live healthier, happier lives.”
The city, however, said, “The ordi-

The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is designed a 2024 Fire Risk Reduction Community. This recognition is part of the state’s effort to enhance fire safety and resilience across California’s high-risk areas.
This designation enhances the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District’s eligibility for Cal Fire’s Wildfire Prevention Grants. These grants are awarded based on the overall benefit to reducing wildfire threats to people, structures and communities. Projects that align with the Fire Risk Reduction Community criteria are given priority, promoting comprehensive and sustainable wildfire prevention efforts across the state.
The designation as a Fire Risk Reduction Community may have a positive impact on San Bernardino County residents in addressing the challenges of obtaining homeowners insurance, specifically in the mountain communities. In 2022, the California Department of Insurance issued regulations that require insurance companies to factor in the Fire Risk Reduction Community designation when offering insurance rates.
“This designation is welcome
news because, as the Board of Supervisors declared in a proclamation on June 25, San Bernardino County and the entire state is in the midst of a crippling insurance crisis,” said Dawn Rowe, board of supervisors chairman and third district supervisor.
“This designation was achieved through hard work and collaboration between the community and the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. I’d like to thank Chief Munsey and Laura Dyberg for their leadership on this issue.”
“Mountain Rim Fire Safe Council and the Inland Empire Fire Safe Alliance congratulate San Bernardino County Fire Protection District in achieving this designation,” said Dyberg, president/chief executive officer of the Mountain Rim Fire Safe Council.
“This will allow communities in wildfire-prone areas to have more favorable insurance rates. It is a tremendous benefit to all property owners in the county.”
The Fire Risk Reduction Community list includes local agencies in state responsibility areas or very high fire hazard severity zones that meet the best practices for local fire planning. San Bernardino County Fire Protection District has successfully met the rigorous

criteria set by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, demonstrating a commitment to advanced fire prevention and planning.
“Being recognized as a Fire Risk Reduction Community demonstrates the community collaboration between San Bernardino County, the fire safe councils and county fire as part of our ongoing efforts in wildfire prevention and safety,” said Fire Chief Dan Munsey. “This designation helps us secure vital state funding that supports wildfire mitigation efforts, as well as support our residents in obtaining necessary insurance coverage at more affordable rates.”
The criteria for inclusion in the Fire Risk Reduction Community list include adherence to comprehensive fire planning standards and implementation of proactive fire risk reduction measures. Local agencies on the list are prioritized for grant funding applications, providing critical resources for ongoing fire prevention and safety projects.

nance is neither illegal nor targeted toward blocking the construction of a Planned Parenthood health center.”
In a statement published on July 23, Planned Parenthood doubled down on the claims that the city council is targeting their facility.
“Today, the Fontana City Council has once again turned its back on the community by extending the ‘urgency moratorium’ on new construction for a year, effectively blocking Planned Parenthood from building a new health center,” Planned Parenthood said.
“Not only is this a clear infringement on their citizens’ constitutional rights to access reproductive care,
it’s obvious these efforts are not motivated out of concern for the health of their citizens.”
Since adopting the ordinance on July 25, 2023, the council has been hit with a string of protests from both sides of the abortion issue.
During multiple city council meetings, anti-abortion advocates were given a platform to speak on the proposed facility. Pro-choice proponents have made their voices heard. Advocates have marched the streets, hung signs and banners, and protested during city council meetings.
On July 23, a plane could be seen flying with a pro-Planned Parenthood banner reading, “Fontana deserves high-quality health care.”
The American Red Cross urges donors to give blood or platelets now to reinforce the blood supply as much as possible before the summer winds down. Type-O blood donors and those giving platelets are especially needed to help keep hospital shelves stocked through August.
Donors remain critically needed to support the Red Cross delivery of vital blood products, which are in demand around-the-clock as hospitals work to save lives this summer. When fewer people answer the call to donate, the blood supply can quickly shrink.
Help safeguard necessary care for patients − book a time to give blood or platelets by visiting redcrossblood.org, calling 1-800RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.
In thanks, those who come to give Aug. 1 to Aug. 31 will get a $20 Amazon.com gift card by email. See redcrossblood.org/ help for details.
Upcoming blood donation opportunities
1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, Kaiser Permanente Palm Court, 17284 Slover Avenue
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, Fontana Foundation of Hope, 9460 Sierra Avenue
9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, Fontana Lewis Library & Technology Center, 8437 Sierra Avenue
The Red Cross is the primary provider to over 115 hospitals in Southern California. In addition to providing lifesaving blood products, the Red Cross mobilizes relief to families affected by disasters, trains people in lifesaving skills and provides services to active and veteran U.S. military personnel and their families.
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school stu-
dents and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive.
On July 16, the Redlands City Council approved an in-kind support request of $6,848 from the Kids Cures Foundation for the Downtown Redlands Artwalk, set for Oct. 27. City staff recommended approval of the in-kind support and the temporary street closures of East State and Fifth Street.
The Facilities and Community Services Department, responsible for administering and issuing permits for special events in public areas, supported the recommendation.
The Kids Cures Foundation is a Beaumont-based nonprofit organization that provides families with food assistance, primarily in the Banning and Beaumont communities. The foundation is also known for its “Comfort Build-aBags” program, which comprises gifts, mostly toys and books, to young hospital patients.
The Downtown Redlands Artwalk is expected to attract approximately 2,500 attendees and feature 45 vendors. Last year, the city council approved an in-kind support request of $8,344 for the same event.
The Kids Cures Foundation has secured Ed Hales Park for the event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The approved street closures will affect East State Street from Orange Street to Seventh Street and Fifth Street from Redlands Boulevard to Orange Street Alley from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The in-
kind support includes deploying police and Facilities and Community Services personnel, park reservation and city equipment.
To get started, follow the instructions at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass or use the Blood Donor App.
Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross is to become a volunteer blood donor ambassador at Red Cross blood drives. Blood donor ambassadors help greet, check in and thank blood donors to ensure they have a positive donation experience.
Volunteers can also serve as transportation specialists, playing a vital role in ensuring lifesaving blood products are delivered to nearby hospitals. For more information and to apply for either position, visit redcross.org/volunteertoday.

Those feelings of low energy and always feeling tired can impact both mood and daily activities.
Seeing others engaging in physical activities while sitting back and yawning is frustrating. Many factors can cause these symptoms, but nutrition is significant in fatigue and dietary changes might decrease that sluggishness.
Excessive fatigue can be associated with anemia caused by an iron deficiency. Several life stages and illnesses can increase the risk of iron deficiencies. Infants and young children are at higher risk. Menstruation and pregnancy, and donating blood can deplete our iron stores. Some gastrointestinal illnesses (such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, malabsorption diseases (such as celiac) and cancer can cause the loss of iron.
Iron supplements might help but there can be adverse side effects and interactions with medications. Iron from food is a much better way to improve the iron content in diet. Red meat has been considered a good source, but we should limit
this for overall better health. There are many good sources of dietary iron. Lentils, white beans, spinach (cooked more than raw), tofu, dark chocolate (!), cooked oysters, sardines, chickpeas, stewed tomatoes and fortified cereals will all boost the iron in your diet. And, for an added boost, pair the iron-rich food with vitamin C such as a glass of orange juice to increase iron absorption.
A study published in the journal Nutrients on Sept. 30, 2019, described differences between the diets of people who have less or more fatigue symptoms. It showed that a balanced diet with whole grains, vegetables, the antioxidants A and C, and omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods lessened fatigue symptoms.
In 2013, the Oncology Nursing Forum published a study on dietand disease-related fatigue, also showing improvement with changes in nutrition. The Mediterranean diet also has been shown to reduce fatigue. The Journal of Nutrition in Gerontology and Geriatrics, Jan. 18, 2022, published a study looking primarily at the fatigue experienced by postmenopausal women.
“Substituting fish for red and processed meat and whole grains for non-whole grains was associated with improvements in overall fatigue, energy and weariness
scores,” said the researchers. Of interest is that they found substituting whole fruits for fruit juices made no difference.
We often talk about “balanced diets” for optimal nutritional intake, but what does this mean? Moderate portions of the major food groups – protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, fiber and adequate amounts of water are recommended for most people though individual needs will vary.
Processed foods and simple sugars should be limited, though we can have an overall healthy diet that includes a cookie or two, on occasion. Blood sugar rises quickly with refined grains and simple sugars, but this can be controlled with a balance of fats and proteins.
“Low glycemic” foods help to avoid that blood sugar spike. The glycemic index is a scale from zero to 100 that measures how fast a particular food can raise blood sugar.
The Cleveland Clinic Newsletter of Oct. 21, 2021, describes the glycemic index and shows that choosing foods that are lower on the scale helps to accomplish a balanced diet.
Blood sugar spikes are lower and slower after eating low-glycemic foods. Pure glucose is 100, a white potato has a score of 78, and a piece of celery, 15. Other examples
of high-glycemic foods (greater than 70 score) are white rice, white bread and high-fructose corn syrup (most sweet sodas). Medium foods include raisins, prunes, breads without whole grains, basmati rice, bananas, and white sugar. Low foods include sweet potatoes, most vegetables, nuts, seeds and most fruits.
This is a proven beneficial diet for people with diabetes and for those who experience low energy, especially after eating. Environmental Research and Public Health, Sept. 22, 2022, published research suggesting that the low glycemic index diet also improves the fatigue experienced by people
with lupus.
Veggies, fruits, whole grains, unprocessed chicken, turkey and fish will give you more energy and curb that tired feeling. Eating a healthy diet has many benefits, from weight control to decreased illness, and may address those symptoms of daily fatigue. Of course, a holistic approach should be taken if you suffer from chronic tiredness and a low energy level. Discuss these options with your primary care provider. Laboratory studies and a good exam may be in order but an improved diet may play a role in feeling better.

The recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump shocked the nation as it was the latest of many incidents involving gun violence reported by the media.
The shooting, watched by millions of Americans live on television, when combined with frequent reports of mass shootings and other gun violence common in the United States, is impacting many people’s mental health, including children, who are feeling helpless and concerned.
Consider these troubling statistics by bradyunited.org:
Americans are 26 more likely to be shot and killed than others in high-income countries.
Every day, 327 people will be shot in the United States. Of those, an average 117 will die.
Every day, 23 minors are shot in the United States.
“Violence impacts each individual differently as it can affect one’s sleep, eating patterns and often disrupts one’s general sense of overall safety, stability and security,” said Dr. Evita Limon- Rocha, an adult, adolescent and child psychiatrist with Kaiser Permanente Southern California.
“In response to stressful situations including gun violence, there often is a variety of normal emotional responses such as sadness, worry or anger. We can feel irritable, and that often impacts our relationships with our loved ones who become worried.”
In children and adolescents, there can be a variety of reactions to violence seen on television or elsewhere, Limon-Rocha noted.
Among children, they include an increase in tantrums, disrupted sleep patterns, irritability, or a negative impact on energy and motivation that affects their behavior.
When that occurs, Limon-Rocha encourages parents to talk to their children and explain what happened in an age-appropriate way. “The key is to create safe space for them,” she said.
Among adults, it’s important to encourage and engage in conversations and calmly discuss recent events involving violence, not limited to what’s seen or read in the news, Dr. Limon-Rocha said.
“Many individuals will be exposed to distressing news in a variety of ways, whether it be overheard conversations or through social media where individuals
can be exposed to distressing images related to violence,” she said.
“Thus, creating a safe routine in one’s life can help provide a sense of security and stability. It’s also important to limit aspects that can increase distress such as taking a break from social media or not watching the news. You also should increase move-
ment and recreational activities including walking outdoors, baking, knitting, solving a puzzle, or playing board games.”
If a person’s reaction to gun or other forms of violence results in prolonged anxiety or depression, it’s best to seek professional help to help ease one’s mental health burdens, Limon-Rocha stressed.

Haley Reinhart is no onetrick pony.
The Chicago native crisscrosses the music spectrum, collaborating with Postmodern Jukebox and The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger. She recently duetted with actor-musician Jeff Goldblum on covers of Taylor Swift’s “Lover” and Loreen’s “Tattoo.”
Her formula — or lack thereof — works. The video for her version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” featuring Casey Abrams, garnered 3.3 million views on YouTube. Her work with Postmodern Jukebox has cumulatively surpassed over 300 million views.
She’ll celebrate all of that at Stage Red at 8 p.m. Friday, July 26. Reinhart just returned from a five-week run, so “me and the boys are warmed up,” she said with a laugh.
The set list will serve as a retrospective of her career, with the inclusion of a new song, “Danger.”
“I’m super excited about ‘Danger,’” she said. “It has been really cool to hear the crowd’s robust response. They’re hooting and hollering. It’s leaning into the bluesier side of my projects. I think people want more of
that from me.
“That’s a big part of who I am. It has a bit of an edge to it. It’s a sexy, bluesy, guttural kind of song. It’s going to help spearhead the next project that I do.”
Reinhart said she’s using the audiences’ reaction and the stage to mold the song before she hits the recording studio.
“I’m not used to that process,” she said. “I really dig it. I’m used to doing it the opposite. I’m usually rushed. I usually don’t get to test it out and tweak it and have the time to feel more comfortable with it. It feels like a very mature step for me in many different ways.”
Music is in her blood. Born in Wheeling, Illinois, to Patti Miller-Reinhart and Harry Reinhart, she was raised on music. Her parents took her to see Ziggy Marley at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago when she was an infant. She clapped enthusiastically at the end of each song, she recalled her parents telling her.
“The first concert I can truly recall is Britney Spears in Tinley Park. I was 7,” she said. “I definitely had posters on my wall.”
When she was 3, her musician parents invited her on stage to join them on vocals. During a recent Chicago tour stop — and all these years
later — Reinhart returned the favor. Her sister/singer-songwriter, Angela Reinhart, played the opening slot, while Reinhart’s fiancé, Drew Dolan, and Harry Reinhart joined her on stage.
The third-place finisher on season 10 of “American Idol,” Reinhart
has another “musical father:” The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger. The two have collaborated on music for several years.
“We’ve done a whole lot together for almost a decade now,” she said.
dio with him again. He’s another very gentle soul. He’s a super present person who cares about people. I love witnessing him talking to his fans. Performing with him is wacky fun and a good time.”
Soon, Reinhart will take a rare two- to three-month break from touring to work on her next record, album No. 6.
“He’s fantastic. I like to call him ‘my fairy rock father.’ He’s a magical dude and he’s so chill. He’s such a gentle, calm soul. You never know what to expect with rock icons and who they really might be underneath it all.

For someone who wrote ‘Light My Fire’ at 17, he’s a very relaxed, calm, peaceful individual.”

“I want to focus on writing music,” she said. “I’m going to places like Nashville. Of course, I have my peeps in LA. I want to get a whole new project together. I have a vision of what I want to create. It has orchestral vibes. A lot of artists put out EPs. I’ll do that, but I’m a true fan of full-length albums that have, potentially, a cool theme to it.”

Legendary DJ Richard Blade
is everybody’s friend. He’s a familiar, soothing soul who is filled with stories about Billy Idol, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Berlin — a virtual who’s who of New Wave music.
His friends have presented him with honorary platinum records, which line the walls of his studio. To the SiriusXM First Wave DJ, Blade said it’s an honor to be in this role.
“I hear stories from fans who say, ‘You DJ’ed my prom back in 1984,’ or ‘I met you and your mom when you came to the restaurant back in 1992. I love to hear those stories.”
An LA-area resident, Blade was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He said he was “blown away” by friends who attended or sent video messages.
“I’ve done a lot of gigs and big events, everything over the years,” he said.
“It was the first one when I haven’t walked away from it and thought I wish I’d done this, or I wish I’d said that or something like that. To me, it was a perfect day. Billy Idol was fantastic. Jimmy Kimmel was beyond good. And the fans were great. You know, it was just a perfect day, I wouldn’t have changed one iota.”
Blade’s talents aren’t limited to the airwaves. He has penned six books, including his 2017 autobiography “World in My Eyes,” and his latest “Slapton Sands.”
“I’d always thought, in the back of mind, what it would be like to write a book and have that out there,” he said. “When I put together ‘World in My Eyes,’ the autobiography, it proved to be such a huge success. It still is and people love it. I was so flattered.
“I went to Billy Idol’s house because we’ve been friends for a long time. I was interviewing him about his autobiography. At the end of the interview, he said, ‘Richard, I have a copy of your book. Would you sign it for me?’ I said, ‘Yes’ and I signed it for Billy. He signed his for me, which is right up there on my bookshelf.”
When he’s writing a book, he acts out the scenes that he is considering. His wife, sometimes, thinks he’s nuts.
“If I’m writing an action piece, like my recent book, ‘Slapton Sands,’ I’ll act out the action,” he said with a laugh. “She’ll know what I’m doing. Like in (the book) ‘SPQR,’ they have a shield. So, I have my arm up and I’m going at it with a ‘sword.’ After I finish, she’ll ask, ‘Who are you fighting?’ ‘Actually, it was a rehearsal fight. They were training.’
“She says, ‘OK. You look like you’re exhausted right now.’ I was but I really enjoy it. I spend a lot of
time researching, doing the history and working out what weapons would be used. If anyone’s going to spend $10 or $20 to buy a book of mine, I want to make it as close to perfect as possible.”
‘Slapton Sands’
“Slapton Sands” is based on a true story in Torquay, one of the embarkation points for American GIs. On June 5, 1944, they marched down the streets of Torquay and went down the slipways that they had built.
“I didn’t know that as a kid,” Blade said. “I used to carry rowing boats down there. But they built the slipways so they could go down and the landing craft would take them out to the big transport ships. They went over to fearlessly face the German guns now. I don’t think I could have done it. I think I would have been a blubbering, cowardly mess hanging in the back of the landing crowd. These guys are heroes.
“But they trained in the south of England, 6 miles away from my hometown called Slapton Sands, the name of the book. We didn’t understand why so much unused live ordnance would wash up on the beaches. There were signs every 100 yards along the beach saying if you find something that looks like live ammunition, do not go near it. Call 999, which is 911 in England. They would send a disposal squad.”
He later found that 749 Americans were killed by the Germans on April 28, 1944, “and it was kept secret.
“For 40 years, the family didn’t know how their sons died. They were told they died in accidents on the base,” he said. “They fell off a ladder. They got hit by a Jeep, but it wasn’t true. They died in combat. These kids were heroes. That’s what the book is about. It’s like ‘Titanic’ meets ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ and people have loved it so far.”
Nominated for the Radio Hall of Fame, Blade calls the ’80s such a good time musically.
“Everything was changing,” he said. “It was post-punk. Really, it helped move everyone in a new direction. But then, after punk, it helped move everyone in a new direction—many were in that new wave genre.
“It went into the new romantic era with Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. It went into the fun pop of bands like Haircut 100, Howard Jones and ABC, who are actually touring in August, which is really exciting.
“Then, it went into the goth side of it with Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the darker side of the Cure. If you listen to ‘Disintegration,” a great album, and Bauhaus
offered to help.
“I would help him set up the gear,” she said. “He had all the records at the time. Every other Saturday, we would do a dance on campus. He asked if I wanted to start things off. So, I ended up playing for an hour. When he left at the end of his third year and I stayed on — as I did a second degree — he asked me to take over as college DJ.”
By that time, Blade started acquiring records and gear, which paid for itself within a year. Then, I’d go home to Torquay, which was a holiday town, like the Laguna Beach of England. I would DJ there in the clubs and then I did mobile DJing.”
and Peter Murphy. That’s why I love the ’80s. It encompasses so many genres of music.”
Blade said it’s easy to stay passionate about his position.
“Everybody has their up days and down days, and music can lift you or echo those sentiments,” he said. “Music talks to people in so many ways. If you’re having a tough day, you can put on an album like ‘Songs of Faith and Devotion’ from Depeche Mode, which was written when they were having their dark days.
“Or you can put on something from the Smiths like ‘Meat is Murder.’ That album and so many of its tracks I can relate to. Morrissey and I are close to each other in age and we both went through the same things growing up—even though he was in the north of England and Manchester and I was in the south.”
The Smiths’ “The Headmaster Ritual” tells the story of a “sadistic” headmaster, Blade said. Both were abused by one.
“His was in Manchester. Mine was in Torquay. I went to lunch to do some extra work on an architecture piece I was doing. I was 17 at the time and I was a big boy at 6 foot. I thought I could knock this guy across the room. Then I would have been expelled.”
He hit Blade with a bamboo cane across his butt. Blade’s father, a teacher, visited the headmaster the next day.
“He said, ‘If you ever put your hands on my son again, you’re going to have to answer to me,’” Blade recalled. “The headmaster said OK and he never did. You have to wonder what was going through that guy’s mind when he asked me to drop my pants and then hit me with a cane. Morrissey had the same thing. He wrote a great song out of it.”
Longtime music lover
Blade was a student at Oxford when he met the college DJ, who was in his third year. He was getting burned out on spinning, so Blade
really lit my fire. I wanted to continue with this, and I had America in my sights.”
When he moved to America, he found disco filling the airwaves. The genre already made its mark on Europe so he had an advantage over the American DJs.
“I knew all the disco acts,” Blade said. “I knew Barry White. I knew KC and the Sunshine Band. I knew Earth, Wind and Fire, and all the other DJs who were just starting. Discos were very new to America. I knew what to do. I knew what to play. I was really in demand because I knew the music.”
Suddenly, he was doing well as a DJ. When he finished his fourth year of college, he had a “Sliding Doors” moment.
“I thought, which door do I go through?” he said.
“Do I use my two degrees and go into teaching or acting or something like that? Or do I go into debt and continue with DJing. I was approached by an agent in Europe and ended up touring Europe for two years. I played across Europe at the greatest clubs as a DJ and that
His original career aspiration was to be a teacher. He disagreed with the notion that he’s a sort of teacher now.
“That would seem to be presumptuous,” he said. “I like to tell stories on the air about groups because I’ve been fortunate enough to be with them — whether it’s in the recording studio with Duran Duran or a rehearsal with Depeche Mode. I like to share those stories and people seem to really appreciate them. Maybe it is kind of teaching, but I don’t think of it that way. I think it of me being a fanboy.”

Vicki was a lifelong resident of Fontana, where she was raised by her loving parents, Howard and Arlene Ranegar.
She graduated from Fontana High School in 1979 and married her devoted husband, Randy Binks, in 1980. Their marriage was a testament to their enduring love and partnership, lasting 44 wonderful years. Together, they raised three children: Brian, Ashleigh, and Lindsay. Vicki was also a proud grandmother to six grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
Vicki dedicated over 25 years to the Fontana Unified School
District, where she held various roles, including cafeteria worker, health assistant and, most notably, as part of the “Workability” department. In this role, she passionately helped special needs students find employment, making a significant im-
pact on many lives. In addition to her work at the school district, Vicki also contributed her time and culinary talents at the Binks’ Boys Home in Fontana, preparing meals with love and care.
