New Orangetheory Fitness location to open in South Chandler BY ALISON STANTON

Just in time for New Year’s resolutions regarding weight loss and getting into shape, a new Orangetheory Fitness location is preparing to open in South Chandler. Becky Renner, an area developer for Orangetheory Fitness in Arizona, and owner of three locations in the East Valley, says the new gym is scheduled to open by the end of January at 4850 S. Gilbert Rd., Suite 7. For more information, call 480-794-1055 or visit orangetheoryfitness.com. To help celebrate, Renner and her staff are hosting a VIP Night at the new location from 6 to 8 p.m. Thu., Jan. 23. The first 50 people through the door will receive a “Swag Bag” filled with goodies, and Renner is in the process of collecting health and beauty- and fitness-related donations from area businesses for a raffle that will be held that evening. “The grand opening will just be a great opportunity to show people what Orangetheory Fitness is all about,” Renner says. She is offering a discounted rate of up to 20% off for people who sign up before the new location opens. “People will receive the discount just by making the commitment to come in,” Renner says. She decided to open the South Chandler location because another nearby, at 1900 W. Germann Rd., Suite 6,

Chandler, is successful. “Usually we are very busy at the start of the year, but we’ve continued to be very busy all year long,” she says. “To be consistent like that all year is really great. In fact, there are now more than 4,500 members total at the 11 locations throughout the state, so it is going very well.” Orangetheory Fitness is popular with people for a variety of reasons, Renner

says. In addition to being affordable-each class works out to about $10, she says--clients are connected to heart rate monitors during the workouts, and they go through the cardio and strength training at their own pace. In addition, Renner says Orangetheory Fitness’ group exercise program offers a great spirit of camaraderie. Everybody is accountable to one another, which, she says, helps

encourage them to stay and finish the workout. “Each one-hour class is run by a skilled personal trainer who not only motivates each member, but takes the class through a workout that ensures that each member spends the average of 12 to 20 minutes in the ‘orange zone’ through the use of TRX machines, rowers, treadmills and free weights,” Renner says. As Renner explains, the “orange zone” is the ideal target heart rate zone because it is backed by science and pushes each member into excess postoxygen consumption (EPOC), which will continue to burn up to 1,200 calories post-workout. “Our workouts are backed by science and you actually see results. Your metabolism speeds up, you lose body fat and you see physical muscle toning.” Because so many people do resolve to exercise more in the beginning of a new year, Renner says all of the Orangetheory Fitness studios nationwide are launching a weight loss challenge beginning Jan. 17. The top male and female winner will split a prize of $25,000. To reward her local members, Renner says she is planning on having her first Chandler location give a monetary award to the studio’s top finisher. “And once my new South Chandler location opens, we will have a whole SEE ORANGETHEORY PAGE 19

Summit urges local businesses to reach new heights BY KIMBERLY HOSEY

The Small Business Alliance AZ, serving small businesses primarily in the East Valley, is hosting The Summit, a business event equipping local small business owners to prosper and grow, Thu., Jan 23, at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler. More than 300 business owners are expected and prominent speakers are set to present. “We really want to help businesses to get reinspired and remotivated to really attack the year and be aggressive with the betterment of their business,” says Aimee Rigler, executive director of the Small Business Alliance. The group chooses a theme each year to help small businesses thrive. This year’s theme is company culture— intentionally cultivating a company culture and striving to define and pursue that purpose. “We really feel the theme applies to if you’re the one-man band or if you have 50 to 100 employees,” Rigler says. The theme will be discussed in a few different ways, Rigler says. Speakers will address the theoretical side of cultivating a company culture: defining what the company’s “story” will be, and communicating that message to customers, employees and anyone who’s interested. Real-world examples will present strategies to business owners, showing

specific ways that deliberate planning and envisioning the company story can lead to business success. “And then we’ve got a couple of really just wonderful success stories of people who are doing amazing things, they have amazing missions for their businesses, but they’re also just going gangbusters and are being successful and prosperous,” Rigler says. Speakers will include international marketing speaker, branding guru and author David Avrin to discuss carving out a unique and successful business image; and Sue Carlisle of Straight to the Plate Catering, who overcame a loss of all smell and taste to become a catering success story. “There’s a lot of uncertainties with health care reform and the debt ceiling that make the environment tenuous for small businesses,” Rigler says. “This is away from the politics and helping them with the tools on the aspects that they really can control, which are a lot of the inner workings of how they run their business and being better business owners. Roushan Christofellis, owner of Salad and Go, a Gilbert drive-thru restaurant, is another speaker. She says she can’t wait to talk to other local small business owners, and is especially excited to support the Small Business Alliance after working with them to start her restaurant.

“They’ve been an amazing, integral part of getting us open,” says Christofellis. Christofellis says that since the model she had was for healthy food that was also convenient and affordable, she knew she would have to do something different from many other restaurants, and the Small Business Alliance understood and helped with that. “They were just so great because they got our concept, and they understood that what we were trying to do was something different. They were amazing

working with us and the town of Gilbert to understand how to look at it with an open mind. They know we don’t fit into this cookie-cutter box of rules and regulations, and said let’s try to be creative and innovative here. The Small Business Alliance was just amazing,” she says. Rigler says the Small Business Alliance is looking forward to hosting the event in the historic Chandler building. The Summit moves around the East Valley each year, and Rigler is proud of the organization’s East Valley focus. SEE SUMMIT PAGE 19

Valley Honda Dealers celebrate ‘helpful holiday’ in Arizona In an effort to make this a helpful holiday season, the Valley Honda Dealers gave back to Arizona’s less fortunate. On Wed., Dec. 11, veterans were treated to a traditional holiday meal: turkey, stuffing, gravy and pie. They were also provided with socks and toiletries. On Thu., Dec. 12, the dealers provided a helpful gift to some of Arizona’s homeless and at risk teens—40 shiny blue bicycles. The Watershed, Tempe’s newest kitchen, bar and lakeside patio, brings a little of Newport Beach, San Francisco and New Mexico to the table. “It was our goal to create an experience that you can’t get anywhere else in Phoenix. Redwood picnic tables on a lawn, couches and bars overlooking a beautiful lake. The feeling is like you’re somewhere else,” says owner Dan Scott of South Chandler. The 200-person patio and indoor Captain’s Lounge is completed. The Watershed will now focus on finalizing the 50-foot bar and the rest of the interior. Chef Matt Nichols created a menu that is best described as modern American

with twists on familiar classics. Everything is made from scratch and to order. Some menu examples include poutine a las Santa Fe; beer battered cod bites; crab cakes; barbecue ribs; chicken enchiladas with homemade green chile; The Watershed house salad; fish tacos; grilled shrimp penne carbonara; freshly ground and infused griddle burgers, a chop menu that will boast four select cuts of steak and a fish of the day. Businesses encouraged to take advantage of SRP’s lighting rebate increase Through April 30, SRP business customers are encouraged to take advantage of a special rebate increase to upgrade lighting and save on energy bills for years to come. SRP has increased the rebate amount from $300 to $350 for each kilowatt of reduced demand for all qualified SRP Standard Business Solutions program lighting projects. This limited-time 17% rebate increase is intended to help make energy-efficient lighting projects even more financially feasible for businesses. It is also the best time to maximize rebate

dollars for upgrading T12 fluorescent lighting systems. Effective May 1, SRP’s baseline and minimum lighting-efficiency requirements within the Business Solutions program will change, so act now to take advantage of the current standards. Additionally, replacement costs for old T12 fluorescent lamps and ballasts may increase because of reduced supply. New federal standards required phasing out production of these lamps and ballasts. SRP business customers are encouraged to upgrade T12s now while rebates are at their highest levels.

Gilbert hospital earns ACR Accreditation Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, 3555 S. Val Vista Dr., Gilbert, has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology. CT scanning, sometimes called CAT scanning, is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and tailor treatments for various medical conditions. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer review evaluation by board certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement. The mission of Gilbert hospital is to provide the highest quality of health care services to the communities they serve. “The accreditation reassures the community that we believe in and deliver healthcare as promised in our mission statement,” says Sheelagh Lindberg, diagnostic radiology director. In addition to CT, Gilbert hospital’s diagnostic imaging department also has accreditation for its MRI and Nuclear Medicine Department. The hospital meets or exceeds the safety and quality assurance guidelines for radiology. The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Arizona Working Poor Tax Credit A tax credit may be available for individuals who pay state taxes in Arizona. For example, if an individual owes $1,000 in state income tax and they donate $400 to a working poor charitable entity that is qualified by the state of Arizona, they can subtract that donation from their tax bill and only owe the state of Arizona $600. That $400 donation can also be used toward the federal income tax deduction. Married couples who are filing jointly
