Broker receives Chandler’s Kelly brings prestigious cutting-edge clients to market Realtor award BY TRACY HOUSE

Early in December Shivani Dallas was awarded the 2013 Realtor of the Year award from the Southeast Valley Regional Association of Realtors (SEVRAR), which recognizes one active member who has provided outstanding service to his/her community during the year. The award came as a surprise to Dallas who thought she was solely attending the SEVRAR meeting. SEVRAR consists of about 10,000 agents in Phoenix and is the sixth largest board of Realtors in the nation. “I did not know I was there for that reason. It was a surprise at that point,” she explains. “I actually thought I was there for the installation of the new president for SEVRAR, which I was. But doing that, they announced those awards.” Dallas says she was shocked. “It was a nice surprise.” Dallas began her real estate career in 2005 and has been a broker since SEE REALTOR PAGE 49

THE TOP DOG OF BLACK DOG PROMOTIONS: Scott Kelly, owner and CEO of Black Dog Promotions, showcases, markets and partners with a wide variety of successful businesses. Submitted photo BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

Some folks are just natural-born businesspeople and have a knack for knowing that next big thing. One such person is Chandler resident Scott Kelly, owner and CEO of Black Dog Promotions. Formerly in the banking and finance industry, he has shifted gears to become a focused media and business development company specializing in public relations and publicity. He also partners with emerging local, regional and national companies in creating unique business opportunities. “I love what I do,” Kelly says. “I look for businesses that utilize successful business models. I also look for people who have unique vision or who have created other successful enterprises in the past. I take whatever is different and forward-thinking about their company or concept and look to create business or marketing opportunities for them.” Kelly earned his undergraduate degree from Adelphi University in New York and his MBA from San Francisco State University. After graduation, he taught economics in Russia, worked on the development of a massive shrimp farm in India, developed online gaming in Costa Rica and worked in the copper mining industry in Chile. He then spent several years in California in investment banking. “With such a diverse business and marketing background, I always bring unique insight to every business I worth

with,” states Kelly. One such unique company is GSI Global Inc. Business partners actor/ producer/motivational speaker Tank Jones and entrepreneur Mike Smoot are at the helm of GSI, which launched in 2012 and created GSI TV. “GSI Global connects consumers with content created by many unique providers and makes it happen in a profitable way,” Kelly explains. “They literally do anything video-related. From video integration, or helping to produce or edit a video, add graphic animation on a video or anything else involving video.” Essentially, any person or company can have a quality channel with GSI TV. “As I am always looking to be on the cutting edge of media, I embraced GSI because they think toward the future, just like I do.” Some channels on the GSI TV site include AZLatinos and Renegade Calendar Girls. Another channel creating a lot of buzz is The Shorts Network, which debuted in November. “There are already some short films from independent producers that have signed on as well as a couple of Academy Award-winning shorts that will be part of the channel. They’ll welcome content from Arizona filmmakers, too,” Kelly explains. The diverse channel website can be found at www.GSITV.com. In a completely different venture, SEE PROMOTIONS PAGE 48

All children should get the opportunity to attend a summer camp where they can run, swim in a lake, fish, hike, do arts and crafts, meet new friends and stargaze. For kids who are battling cancer, summer camp is a welcome way to try to take their mind off their disease and find a bit of freedom in the great outdoors. Feb. 28 marks the first Dreams of Summer Gala that benefits Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks, a special facility specifically designated for children who have or have had cancer, plus their brothers and sisters. Held at the Ocotillo Golf Resort, Dreams of Summer will kick off with a silent auction and cocktail hour, followed by an elegant sit-down dinner and presentation from the children of Arizona Camp Sunrise. Following is a live auction that will feature golf outings, hotels stays, jewelry and other goods and services. This inaugural event serves as the main fundraiser, working to support the ongoing efforts of creating memories and unforgettable experiences for the children who attend Arizona Camp Sunrise, organizers say. Dreams of Summer Gala tickets are available at azcampsunrise.org/ SEE SUMMER GALA PAGE 50

Black Dog Promotions is marketing the International Sportsmen’s Expo taking place at the University of Phoenix Stadium Feb. 20-23. “This event is huge and every year it just keeps getting bigger and better,” Kelly says. “Whether you like camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, Boy Scouting activities or archery, this event will have everything. It’s an outdoor activist’s dream. I’m proud to be a part of this because I love and support the Boy Scouts and it’s given me a whole new appreciation for the great outdoors an all the fun opportunities it provides.” (Of note, Kelly serves on the executive committee for the Boy Scouts, 2014 Scout-O-Rama.) For more information, visit sportsexpos.com/attend/2014/ phoenix/ Kelly has always loved the entrepreneurial spirit and founded Grow Southwest to spotlight innovative new companies.

“I created Grow Southwest as a way to showcase emerging people and businesses in the southwest that are displaying cutting-edge ideas in entrepreneurism or thinking outside of the box,” Kelly explained. “It’s important for me to bring their stories out to the media and to the public because they are the future in areas such as technology, media and unique services that will serve consumers in a unique way. “Some of the companies that we have spotlighted are companies that have emerged from young entrepreneurs completing programs at ASU, companies like Duo Kitchenware and SafeSIPP.” Visit GrowSouthwest.com for more information. He jumped at the chance to partner with Data Privacy Network. They have developed a network of consultants, speakers, products and services designed to help individuals and businesses of all sizes secure their data, protect their identity and maximize online security. “With my background in banking and

finance, I know first-hand how important it is to protect personal and professional data and information,” Kelly notes. “Data Privacy Network was founded by Phil Alexander and he shares my passion for protecting businesses and people from the craziness that can ensue with unsecured data,” states Kelly. Together with Black Dog Promotions, the two companies inform and educate others about the importance of properly securing and protecting data. Learn more about Data Privacy Network at www. DataPrivacyNetwork.com. Show Business Report, ShowBusinessReport.com, is a Black Dog Promotions venture that launched in November. “The new website is centric to the entertainment industry, focusing on business elements of television, film, acting and production. “We have already interviewed stars from ‘Once Upon a Time’ and ‘Nashville’ and in the new year, we’ll have one of the stars of ‘Shark Tank,’ plus many other surprises.” Kelly says. “I’m excited to bring

some unique content to the site and we’ll be at various events in the Valley and elsewhere, interviewing those in the industry. Some people think that movies and television are all glitz and glamour, but we’ll be revealing the business taking place behind the spotlight. I’m excited about the new ‘baby’ in the Black Dog Promotions family.” Moving toward the future, Kelly is looking forward to working with other entertainment, sports, technology and finance companies to include in the mix of his dynamic and burgeoning media, marketing and business development agency. “I’m always looking to partner with companies that think like we do. Together, the possibilities are endless.” Find out more at www. BlackDogPromotions.com. Lynette Carrington is a freelancer for the SanTan Sun News. She can be reached at lynette@santansun.com.

Chandler Multicultural Festival celebrates diversity BY MEGHAN MCCOY

Residents from all walks of life will come together this month to honor the diversity among them during the 19th annual Chandler Multicultural Festival. “It’s our way of celebrating the diversity in our community,” says Chandler Special Events Coordinator Hermelinda Llamas. “We like to showcase that diversity through our entertainment, our activities and the food.” This year the festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., Jan. 18, in the downtown Chandler Public Library courtyard, 22 S. Delaware St. Admission and parking are free. The festival attracts between 5,500 and 7,500 people throughout the day. “We do get a pretty good crowd,” Llamas says. The event is part of the city’s monthlong Celebration of Unity. For more information about the Celebration of Unity, visit chandleraz.gov/unity. The Chandler Multicultural Festival kicks off with the fourth annual naturalization ceremony. “The Department of Homeland Security does the choosing, we provide them with an outlet to do it,” Llamas says of the 200 honorees. “They choose

people who are here locally in the East Valley, Chandler and surrounding areas. It’s a little more personalized for them.” More than 600 individuals have

become American citizens through the naturalization ceremony. “It’s really a neat ceremony and everyone is accepting of the different

cultures,” Llamas says, adding that it showcases how they live and puts their heritage on display. There will be day-long entertainment for those who attend the Chandler Multicultural Festival. The event will also feature entertainment by a number of different groups, including a Mexican folk music duo, a belly dancing troupe, children who are learning Korean drumming and a professional Japanese drumming organization. Winners of the Creative Expression Competition involving Chandler schoolage children who produced artwork, essays and performances centering on the unity theme will be displayed. There will also be a variety of food to try, including Caribbean, southern, Mexican, Native American and American cuisine. Lisa’s Creatures will bring different animals from various regions of the world. Llamas says it will be fun for the kids as they learn what the animals eat and some history about the creatures. 2009. She explains that a broker has more experience, continued education and certification than a Realtor, much like a LPN and a nurse. Dallas specializes in residential real estate and since 2006 Dallas has completed more than 400 short sales. She has several designations signifying her advanced education in the real estate field in addition to being an associate broker, including: Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE), The Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR), The Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) and Short Sales & Foreclosure Resource Certification (SFR). She explains that agents choose to continue their education to take their designations to the next level. An associate broker with RE/MAX Infinity in Chandler, Dallas was nominated by Shelly Farley, managing broker, and Bill Ryan owner of RE/MAX Infinity. Nominations are collected and the selection is based on specific criteria. Among the criteria the association considers are high principles, faithfulness to laws and regulations in the industry, local, state and national civic and service clubs, charitable activities and the likes, along with service to the Realtor associations, and business accomplishments. Farley says she nominated Dallas for more than one reason. “Shivani is a force to be reckoned with. When she sets her mind to something she does it. More importantly, this year she’s taken on a really big role at SEVRAR with the Leadership Committee and Young

Professionals Network. She’s been involved in the community, which is really nice, and rare in our industry. You don’t see a lot of people willing to give back and she’s really just jumped in.” Farley mentions Dallas is part of the mentor process in the office and is always willing to help. “It was a no-brainer to nominate her for this award.” She cites her consistent growth and giving back as other reasons for her nomination. “We’re very proud of her.” Dallas is passionate about serving on the Professional Development Committee, Young Professionals Networking, and the Political Action Committee through SEVRAR. “I love my involvement with SEVRAR and just very passionate about the political action committee I’m part of there, which is fighting for Arizona legislation that has to do with homeownership here and doing more of the same.” Dallas works out of the RE/MAX Infinity Office at 2450 S. Arizona Ave., Suite 1, Chandler, providing real estate services throughout the East Valley. She represents buyers and sellers and has a wealth of knowledge, experience and resources to help with real estate decisions and believes that integrity and transparency are keys in being a trusted real estate professional. SUMMER GALA FROM PAGE 47

programs-events/dreams-summer-gala/. Sponsorship opportunities are available and live auction items are also welcome. Chandler resident Stacey (Orendorff) Deiser, 32, fondly remembers her days at Arizona Camp Sunrise. She was diagnosed with spinal neuroblastoma, a tumor underneath the spine, at the age of 7 months. “My parents told me that at 6 months you start sitting up on your own, but then I stopped doing that,” Deiser explains. “They took me in and found out I had this tumor underneath my spine and it was preventing me from sitting up. I’m very thankful that I don’t remember going through any of it.” As a baby, she underwent chemo and surgery to remove the tumor. Even after the operation, some of the tumor remained and she underwent a second surgery. Luckily, the procedure was a success, but she had to undergo testing and blood work for years afterward. At the age of 14, she was declared as cured of her cancer. Arizona Camp Sunrise was an important part of her more fond childhood memories. “They had a day camp where I would go for the day and I was 5,” Deiser recalls. “My mom told me because of my maturity, that at age 6, they let me go too early to the camp up north. I went every year until I was 15 or 16. They would have Jell-O wars. One team would be red and one team would be green and we would go at it. That was a blast. We did a ton of activities and every day it was something different. It was the highlight of my

LAKE DAY: Fishing and swimming are just some of the many fun activities available for campers. Submitted photo summer.” She also enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, rappelling and campfires. She served as a counselor-in-training for a few years at Arizona Camp Sunrise, too. Deiser says she made friends with whom she remains in touch.

EVENING HOURS AVAILABLE! Now open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Deiser is healthy and has moved on with her life. But, she is excited to relive some of her memories at the Dreams of Summer Gala at Ocotillo Golf Resort. “When I saw this event on Facebook, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s the camp I used to go to,’ and it gave me goose

bumps,” she says. “This camp makes a huge difference in so many children’s lives and the kids going through this feel that they have something in common with everyone else.” Arizona Camp Sunrise was established in 1983 and is the first camp in Arizona for children with cancer. In that first year, there were 23 cancer patients and eight staff members who took to the pastures in the White Mountains where staff and children slept in tents and worked together cooking meals. In 1985, the camp moved to the R-C Scout Ranch, northeast of Payson. Because of generous support by individuals and businesses, the facilities have grown. Now there are seven cabins, a dining hall and kitchen, a 24/7 medical staff and a medical cabin that proves cancer treatment support. The camp engages hundreds of children impacted by cancer, offering camps, retreats, and other services year-round. The Sidekicks program is the only one like it in the state and is for the siblings of cancer patients who also have their own program at the camp. In 2013, the Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation was established to continue the 31-year legacy of Arizona Camp Sunrise after funding from The American Cancer Society was discontinued. The new organization is committed to actively preserving and advancing the camps and programs for children affected by cancer. Lynette Carrington is a freelancer for the SanTan Sun News.
