Beyond Baroque launches Amanda Gorman Future Voices prize By Kamala Kirk eyond Baroque Literary Arts Center has launched the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize, a poetry contest and scholarship for youth poets-of-color in California. Based in Venice and founded in 1968, Beyond Baroque is a nonprofit public space dedicated to cultivating new writing and expanding the public’s knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. The Future Poetry Prize is named for Beyond Baroque alumna, Amanda Gorman, who is a graduate of Santa Monica’s New Roads School and the youngest Inaugural Poet in American history. Gorman began her development as a poet by participating in the Beyond Baroque Student Poets’ Program, and later credited Beyond Baroque as the place “where a young poet found the

The Future Voices Poetry Prize is open from now until May for all poets currently enrolled in grades 9 to 12 self-identifying as Black, Indigenous or people-of-color. They must currently live in California and must be able to provide proof of acceptance to a college or university with the intent to enroll in Fall 2022. Three scholarship winners will receive $3,000 each. College-bound students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grade are invited to submit to a separate poetry contest and the winner will receive $500. Runners-up will receive additional prizes. “Beyond Baroque has a long history of nurturing some of Los Angeles’ most important literary voices,” said Quentin Ring, executive director of Beyond

And we’re very excited to honor that impact—and to nurture a whole generation of poetic talents— through the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize. Amanda has shown us all how poetry can speak eloquently to the most important social justice issues of our time, and we hope the prize will inspire young poets of color to use their voices to do the same.” The deadline to apply is May 1, 2022 and prize winners will be announced by July 1, 2022. Healing Arts
Iconic art walk is back to support Venice Family Clinic By Bridgette M. Redman rt can heal. Not just for those who see or own it, but also for those who benefit from art sale proceeds. The Venice Family Clinic provides comprehensive health care to 45,000 people each year—regardless of their income, insurance or immigration status. They have 17 sites in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, Inglewood, Culver City, Redondo Beach, Carson, Gardena and Hawthorne along with two mobile clinics. However, it gets expensive taking care of people who aren’t able to pay. There was a time in their history—1979 to be specific—where they were in danger of having to close. Those who wanted to ensure it survived, came up with an idea, an idea that launched an annual fundraiser that continues to this day, the Venice Family Clinic Art Walk and Auction. They approached Frank Gehry,

Artists opened their studios, donated artwork and all the proceeds went to keeping the clinic operating. This year, organizers have built on that legacy while reimagining the iconic event. It is taking place from now through May 1, and people can bid on more than
200 art works from established, mid-career and emerging artists. Bidding takes place in person at Santa Monica Place or online at artsy.net/veniceartwork. Part of the reimagining includes an NFT auction that is hosted on Nifty Gateway. Artists from the NFT market have been invited to participate in the first NFT auction. They include new works from such artists as Tomaso Abertini, Bryan Brinkman, Nina Hawkins, Parin Heidari and Mieke Marple. “We are excited to provide this new way for everyone to view and bid on the art in person at our new Venice Art Walk Gallery,” said Elizabeth Benson Forer, CEO and executive director of Venice Family Clinic. “After having to spend two years apart, we are also energized to have a space to help us reconnect safely with the community that makes Venice Family Clinic Art Walk

Her artwork will be displayed at the Venice Art Walk Gallery at Santa Monica Place. Based in Los Angeles, she works in such media as video, drawing and installation. She is on the graduate faculty at Otis College of Art and Design. “Health care is a human right,” Bowers said. “I’m so grateful the Venice Family Clinic exists so that people in need have
access to quality health care they can afford. The Clinic alone cannot meet the tremendous necessity for health care. Our society must do more—for places like the Clinic, for their patients and the millions of uninsured in this country.” Other artists who have donated art work for the auction include John Baldessari, Gary Baseman, Billy Al Bengston, Bumblebeelovesyou, Fritz Chesnut, Rosson Crow, Laddie John Dill, Sam Durant, FriendsWithYou, Alexandra Grant, Lauren Greenfield, Channing Hansen, KAWS, Grant Levy Lucero, Ed Moses, Ed Ruscha, Analia Saban, The Art of Chase, Zoe Walsh, Brenna Youngblood and Gajin Fujita. Playa del Rey resident and movie stuntman, Mark Terry, recently authored his first children’s picture book, “Kyle the Coyote: Lost in the Desert.” that’s how the story came about and I started working with these artists while I wrote a story.” Terry’s first book, “Kyle the Coyote: Lost in the Desert,” released on April 3 is about a young coyote pup who gets lost in the desert and while he tries to reunite with his family, he meets different animals along the way. Terry said the book helps teach kids what to do if they are ever
separated from their parents. “The story kind of wrote itself because I already had all the characters in my head when I saw all of these characters on my trail camera,” Terry said. Terry also wanted his book to educate people about coyotes and their way of life. He said that living in Playa del Rey where there are wetlands near the marinas, many Californians are
afraid of coyotes and talk a lot about finding ways to get rid of them. “I’m not any kind of animal rights activist or anything, but coyotes are just like any other parents,” Terry said. “It’s the perfect way to tell a story about not being judgmental.” The book is an easy-to-read tale with illustrations by Alex Sarabia, an illustrator who Terry met while restoring one of his films, “Samurai Priest Vampire Hunter.” “Alex did a lot of illustrations for the movie’s comic book transitions,” Terry said. “While we were waiting for the sound mix to complete, all of the elements to realize ‘Kyle the Coyote’ were right in front of me.” Sarabia’s art is drawn and colored by hand, and for a higher detailed edition of the book, Terry wanted to off-set print some copies for a better quality

By Sara Edwards ovie stuntman, Mark Terry, moved to Playa del Rey in 2007 to produce the film “Live Evil,” which was released on Netflix in 2009. To make the film look like it had been shot in 2007, he hired picture and comic book artists to help repurpose the footage. When the project was done, the artists wanted to continue working with Terry on another project. “I’d had this idea of doing a children’s book,” Terry said. He’d majored in writing and had a background in writing scripts, but never thought about writing picture books until he saw a little coyote that kept popping up in video footage from an outdoor camera he had purchased. “I kept seeing this little coyote pop up so I turned to my girlfriend and said, ‘Look, there’s Kyle the Coyote!’” he said. “So

By Kamala Kirk ummer is right around the corner and with kids going on a long break from school, many parents are looking for other fun and educational opportunities to keep their children busy and engaged. There are plenty of Westside-based summer camp programs that provide kids with a safe environment where they can make friends, pursue hobbies and interests, learn through first-hand experiences, develop decisionmaking skills and enjoy the great outdoors. Not only does going to camp help kids form their own identities and independence while spending time away from their parents, but studies also show that camp offers a safe environment where kids can learn freely, fosters emotional intelligence and self-confidence, and helps campers develop other skills such as leadership that will prove beneficial into adulthood. From science and sports to beach and environmentalism, these local camp programs offer kids and teens a variety of opportunities that are both educational and fun.

Partnering for a Cause Jamie Lee Curtis collaborates with longtime friend and hairstylist Sean James PHOTOS BY CHRIS MORTENSON; CURTIS’ HAIR BY SEAN JAMES, MAKEUP BY GRACE AHAN
Santa Monica resident and actress, Jamie Lee Curtis, has partnered with her longtime friend and hairstylist, Sean James, for a collaboration between their brands. By Kamala Kirk hroughout the years, actress Jamie Lee Curtis and celebrity hairstylist Sean James have collaborated on many projects and iconic looks for her film and TV roles, among them “Halloween Kills,” “Freaky Friday” and “Knives Out.” The two first met when Curtis brought her daughter, Annie, in for a haircut at Fred Segal Santa Monica almost 30 years ago. “At the time I was going to a fancy hairdresser and my guy was out of town,” Curtis recalled. “After Sean cut Annie’s hair, I told him I needed a haircut too. I sat in his chair and when he finished, my mind was blown. I loved what he did and he’s cut my hair ever since.
T
We’ve worked together on many movies and have been friends for a long time. He also cuts my husband’s hair and both of my daughters’ hair. He was at Annie’s wedding and will be at Ruby’s. Sean has become a part of our family.” James, who is represented by Aim Artists and works at Matthew Preece Salon in Santa Monica, is an award-winning celebrity hairstylist whose clients include Chris Hardwick, Eugene Levy, Cole and Dylan Sprouse, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. “When I first cut Jamie’s hair, she trusted me to give her a new look,” James said. “And over the years, I’ve helped create different looks for her various roles and projects. I’ve

traveled the world with her and it’s been wonderful to be by her side for special moments in her life like when she received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award in Italy. We share a deep connection and my entire friendship with her has been a collaborative effort from the start.” Most recently, Curtis and James have partnered for a special collaboration between their brands, My Hand in Yours and Beach Blvd, to benefit an important cause. In 2019, Curtis launched My Hand in Yours, a line of handmade artisan gifts that provide comfort and support. From candles to small sculptures, all of the items are designed by artists and handpicked by Curtis, with 100% of
proceeds going to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “For years I would send little bronze feet made by sculptor Anne Ricketts as gifts along with a note that said, ‘Be where your feet are,’” Curtis said. “For someone going through a hard time, it would remind them to be present and help them stay grounded. My Hand in Yours is a phrase I always write on cards for friends and loved ones, it’s my way of saying ‘I love you.’ When I came up with the idea for the company, I approached Anne to make a small sculpture of two hands clasped together. I’ve been very blessed in my life and the purpose of My Hand in Yours is not to make more money, it’s to raise money for the Children’s Hospital. I pay
for all of the costs including manufacturing. If you spend $35 on a tote bag, all of that money goes towards the care of critically ill children. Every cent is sent.” “Jamie is an incredible philanthropist who has been working with Children’s Hospital for many years since I’ve known her,” James added. “When I think of Jamie, I don’t think of her as just a movie star. I think of her like a sister and someone who contributes and gives back to society. My Hand in Yours has such a great selection of beautiful gifts that provide people with closeness and love during these times of separation and isolation. The most important thing is that all of the profits go to Children’s

working with her friend, Terry Castle, on a candle in honor of her 17-year-old son, Will, who had passed away from leukemia. “I ran into Terry at a high school reunion where I learned about her son’s passing,” Curtis said. “She contacted me a few months after I started My Hand in Yours and told me that she was starting a candle line to raise money for pediatric cancer. She offered to create an exclusive hand poured candle that was called Will Comfort. She sent over samples of different fragrances and French lavender was the perfect fit. I began sourcing lavender from Bilston Creek Farm on Vancouver Island and we expanded our line to include a lavender eye pillow, tea and essential oils. Lavender became our scent.” Since its inception, the company has continued to expand its offerings to include items like hats, an artisan wreath, wind chimes and a baby snuggler, among others. Their new line of pet products, My Paw in Yours, has also been a big hit with fans of the brand. In addition to a stainless steel pet bowl created by MiiR, they have a stylish leash system made by young entrepreneur Jake Hurley. 100% of every sale from the pet products goes toward Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ animal service program for young patients. “Animal visits greatly reduce the stress levels of children and greatly reduce the need for pain medication,” Curtis said. “When children interact with these service animals, it’s incredibly healing for them. I’m really excited that we’ve been able to expand the company into other markets, but the most important thing for me is that the Children’s Hospital gets all of the profits. So far, we’ve raised around $750,000. I am moved to tears on a daily basis by the kindness and generosity of my partners like Sean, the artists and makers, and customers who all want to join in and make a difference. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no greater mission than helping a sick or injured child.”

Hospital, which is an incredible institution with innovative doctors and nurses. I am so happy to be able to help bring awareness and raise money for this cause. It’s truly amazing what Jamie is doing.” James is the founder of Beach Blvd, a line of luxury self-care products that are inspired by beaches around the world and his career in Hollywood. Prior to the pandemic, James was developing his own haircare line, but when there was a national shortage of hand sanitizer as a result of COVID-19, he decided to change course and developed highquality sanitizers instead. “When I started My Hand in Yours, Sean was incredibly supportive and was always buying our items as gifts for friends,” Curtis said. “He’s a very ambitious person who came to America from Australia with only a few dollars in his pocket and has worked extremely hard to achieve all of his success. When COVID hit, he created his own line of hand sanitizers, which I loved immediately. Then three months ago he came to me and offered to create a custom hand sanitizer in our signature scent. It smells wonderful and I bring it everywhere with me. When I offered to pay for the cost of production and materials, he refused. He wanted to donate everything, which allows us to sell his product at no cost to us and the hospital gets all the profit. That is the purest form of philanthropy.” The Beach Blvd hand sanitizer features a French lavender fragrance and is available exclusively on My Hand in Yours’ website. It retails for $12 per bottle or two bottles for $20. James and his business partner, Vikram Prabhu, worked with Curtis and a graphic designer to create the lavender wreath logo that appears on the bottle. In the center of the wreath is a pair of hands representing My Hand in Yours with ocean waves at the bottom. “I love the ocean and the waves represent the continuous cycle of life,” James said. “My Hand in Yours has several lavender products, so we wanted to create a scent that was in alignment with Jamie’s brand. The hand sanitizer is formulated in the U.S.” Curtis said that lavender became the signature scent for the company when she was

‘Cue & A’ offers pun-filled evening on making movie music By Paul Wozniak f you’ve ever been pumped up by the music from the film “Rocky” or pretended to fly to the “Superman” theme song, then you already know the power of a film score. On April 26 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, “Cue & A with Robert Kraft featuring Kris Bowers” offered an evening of conversation, clips and commentary, live demonstrations, and an audience Q & A with Emmy Award-winning composer and pianist Kris Bowers (“King Richard,” “Bridgerton”) moderated by the former president of Fox Music, Academy Awardnominated Kraft. For Kraft, “Cue & A” is an extension of his continued advocacy for what he sees as an underappreciated craft. “I think that film and television composers are the least acknowledged of all the ‘crafts’ people around filmmaking,” Kraft said. “They have a niche audience of musicians. They have a slightly larger audience of fans. But in my world, they are absolute warriors who solve problems and deserve accolades for their level of artistry.” Kraft should know. He started his music career in the 1970s as a songwriter and band leader. His songs have been recorded by artists from Bette Midler and Roberta Flack to Bruce Willis and Kermit the Frog. As president of Fox Music from 1994 to 2012, Kraft was the executive in charge of music for more than 300 feature films including the record-breaking scores and soundtracks “Titanic,” “Moulin Rouge!” “Waiting To Exhale” and “Life of Pi.” After Kraft left 20th Century Fox, he produced “Score,” a music documentary that was later adapted into a podcast called “Score: The Podcast.” “We sort of focus on ways to promote the whole arena of music for picture,” Kraft said. When a friend connected to The Broad Stage suggested an evening with a film composer talking about how they scored scenes, Kraft was intrigued. “I said, ‘I would like to go to something like that,’” Kraft said. “And of course, not unlike almost everything that’s happened to me in my life, the other

What’s the worst that could happen? Are they going to kill me if I (expletive) this movie up? Are they going to run me out of town if I lose a lot of money on this record label? No.” No one will be running Kraft out of town as the “event moderator” either, but they might learn more about the difficulty of the composer’s job. “I understand the level, the Olympic level of difficulty of what they do scoring movies,” Kraft said. “It’s not just writing songs and making records, and I’ve certainly been around people who do that. And I’ve also done it myself for many years. But scoring a film is a very difficult assignment. And so, on that level, I’m always interested in promoting the idea of respect for film composers.” It’s also a chance for Kraft to work with artists he knows and admires. “This is my universe,” Kraft said. “I think the joy of these evenings coming up is I’m
starting to look at people that I feel comfortable with and know, and so I know both of these composers have been around their work.” As varied as Kraft’s career appears to be (from nightclub musician to studio executive), he said one connective thread between all of his jobs has been music. “I’m in a very creative universe where flexibility and spontaneity are so woven through every day,” Kraft said. “I think what might be surprising to most people is that I kind of touched on a lot of pieces of a big wheel with music at the center. If you dolly back from my career, it has never been about anything but one thing and that’s music. I haven’t done any gardening. I haven’t installed any solar panels. I don’t go and sew pant legs for costumes. It’s all music in every possible way.” Kraft hopes the “Cue & A” series continues on. He’s equally excited about the second scheduled event on June 1 with composer Michael Abels (“Get Out,” “Us”). “These are great artists, so I’m happy to just talk to them,” Kraft said. “It’s just an area of art and expression that I absolutely am fascinated by and love and appreciate. And having done it and seeing how hard it is, and having been next to these geniuses to do it. I’m just happy to share it.”

Party Crashers
Paul Sand debuts new play at Odyssey Theatre By Paul Wozniak f you’ve ever felt like someone who just met you got the wrong idea about who you were, Paul Sand has written a play satirizing that situation. “The Pilot Who Crashed the Party: A Dangerous Satire in Two Acts” is a visiting production on April 29, 30 and May 1 at the Odyssey Theatre. It’s about a dinner party, unexpected guests and a real airplane crashing (sort of). Described as “one of the founding members of improv comedy in America” by Second City Chicago, Sand has worked with legendary mime, Marcel Marceau, in Paris and guest starred on “The Carol Burnett Show” and “The X-Files,” among others. He’s won a Tony Award and two Drama Desk Awards for acting, and toured with Judy Garland. Sand has traversed many major cities for his craft; however, as he paraphrased a former conversation: “I was once talking with a really smart psychiatrist and asked, ‘Where do you like to live the most?’ She said, ‘Paris and Santa Monica…anywhere in the world, Santa Monica, you’ve got it all.’” Sand has been tinkering for years with the concept for “The Pilot,” which is set in a mansion in the Santa Monica mountains. But it wasn’t until a casual conversation with a guest at a party turned amusement into reality. “I had a reading at a friend’s house in some mansion and there was somebody there who asked, ‘Can I give you some money?’” Sand said. “And I said, ‘Yes.’ And the sum was kind of impressive.” He recruited some of his favorite actors in town, a cast that includes Jacqueline Wright, Lee Boek, Megan Rippey, Irish Giron, Sol Mason, Debra Lane and Caroline Quigley, with producer Keira Jacob. The workshop is sponsored in part by Public Works Improvisational Theater Company. While the production isn’t autobiographical per say, the story’s central concept does come from personal experience. “When I was a young guy in New York doing shows and things, and even out here on TV, people assume hey’ve got your number,” Sand said. “I’ve heard, ‘We are so much alike,’ so often in my life, and then I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. So I’d never say, ‘No, we’re not.’ I just kind of go, ‘Oh, really?’ And then you can get in

Tony and two-time Drama Desk Award winner, Paul Sand, wrote and directed “The Pilot Who Crashed the Party: A Dangerous Satire in Two Acts.” trouble.” Sand wrote the script by improvising in front of the
computer to create the natural conversational rhythm of the dialogue. “I thought since I come from a satirical background with Second City, I grew up with Viola Spolin who invented it all,” Sand said. “And I thought I’ll make sort of satire about it.” In addition to writing the script, Sand is also directing, a skill that he describes as listening more than talking. “In directing, with the actors it’s guiding them towards what they want to do, unless I get a better idea,” Sand said. In light of the pandemic, Sand found many ways to fill up his time with artistic ventures like directing.
“I am a creative person,” Sand said. “And a creative person…you can fill up your time in a very constructive way.” He also didn’t mind the solitude as some might think. “Maybe I live an isolated life, but I didn’t feel held down,” Sand said. “I was writing more and I never felt like I was in a problematic situation. I mean, the world is horrifying. But it’s like when I was a little kid, some relative said to me, ‘Oh, Paul, you just like to stay in your own little world, don’t you?’ And I remember saying, ‘Yeah.’” Still, after two years of dark stages, Sand is just thrilled for the possibilities of what is yet to come.
“Well, it’s a kind of excitement I get for a lot of interesting things and the possibility of it,” Sand said. “This is why I’m calling it a workshop because the possibility is endless. I’d like to go all over the world [with the production]. To me it is like the beginning.” The Pilot Who Crashed the Party” WHEN: April 29 & 30 at 8 p.m., May 1 at 7 p.m. WHERE: The Odyssey Theatre, 2055 S. THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE NEWS
Reverse mortgage knockoff available for seniors 55 and over Here’s a hybrid mortgage for preretirement borrowers who need to lower their payments as mortgage rates rise and the cost of living mushrooms. After rocketing upward for four straight months, the average rate for a 30-year, fixed mortgage hit 5% in the past week – the highest it’s been in more than a decade. On top of that, wholesale prices surged 11.2% in March. Groceries, gasoline, and medical matters are just the tip of the overall affordability iceberg. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand these headwinds are going to make home prices reverse course. What are pre-retirement homeowners to do? How do they maintain their overall net worth and adjust to inflationary financial pressures? Sell? What about the incredible capital gains tax one might be paying? And where to go? Perhaps the answer for the 55 and over crowd is to tap into their home equity vault to pay lingering bills and make needed home repairs before home prices make a real swan dive.
But what kind of a mortgage is best to do that? Easy qualifying FHA reverse mortgages are a non-starter unless you are at least 62. Interest-only mortgages last at most 10 years before principal and interest payments kick in. Can you say payment shock? A good solution for some could be an interesting mortgage hybrid that takes baby steps to a reverse mortgage. It’s available for those age 55 and over who want to change their mortgage, do a cashout refinance or get a new purchase loan. The monthly cost is much lower than a regular mortgage payment or even an interest-only mortgage payment. The key difference between this and a similar mortgage product I wrote about in 2020 is the minimum age dropped to 55 from 60. The borrower must make a partial interest payment for the first 10 years. The mortgage balance increases just like a reverse mortgage — classic negative amortization. But then, no more house payments and no more obligations to the mortgage servicer so long as you stay in your home. If you move, refinance or pass away, the mortgage will need to be repaid.

You will always be required to maintain your home, pay your property taxes, homeowners’ insurance and any HOA fees.
down payment or equity will need to be at least 60% to make the math work, or $1.2 million on a $2 million dollar home.
Your required minimum payment — excluding taxes, insurance and HOA fees — is roughly 30% of the full payment in one illustration I reviewed. The remaining balance zoomed from $497,250 to more than $750,000 after the first ten years of payments. Again, classic negative amortization. No more payments though.
Other key points include:
Let’s say a 55-year-old borrower takes out a mortgage and lives in the home until he or she passes at 90. Let’s assume the property is worth significantly less than what is owed on the original principal balance and the accrued interest and the property is under water. Since this is a “nonrecourse loan,” the mortgage servicer would not be able to go after the owner’s estate to make up the difference between the home’s value and the amount owed. The heirs still will have the option to pay off the lien if they want to keep the home. This is based upon an actuary table for the youngest borrower, who must be at least 55. The older you are, the less equity is required. Assuming the youngest borrower is 55, the
• Borrowers must have a minimum middle FICO score of 680. • Borrowers must income qualify. • Borrowers must attend a mortgage counseling class. • The loans are available for up to $4 million. • The loans are available for houses, condos and buildings with up to four units. • To refinance, borrowers must have 10 years or more remaining on their existing mortgage. • There’s no FHA mortgage insurance because this is not a Federal Housing Administration loan. • Keep in mind nothing is free. Even though this mortgage instrument does not carry expensive FHA mortgage insurance, just like the FHA reverse mortgage, there may be enormous closing costs. THIS WEEK’S CONTRIBUTION CAME FROM:
