Beyond Baroque launches Amanda Gorman Future Voices prize
By Kamala Kirk
Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center has launched the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize, a poetry contest and scholarship for youth poets-of-color in California. Based in Venice and founded in 1968, Beyond Baroque is a nonprofit public space dedicated to cultivating new writing and expanding the public’s knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. The Future Poetry Prize is named for Beyond Baroque alumna, Amanda Gorman, who is a graduate of Santa Monica’s New Roads School and the youngest Inaugural Poet in American history. Gorman began her development as a poet by participating in the Beyond Baroque Student Poets’ Program, and later credited Beyond Baroque as the place “where a young poet found the love of her life.” The prize continues Gorman’s legacy by supporting California student poets-of-color in their development. The Future Voices Poetry Prize is open from now until May for all poets currently enrolled in grades 9 to 12 self-identifying as Black, Indigenous or people-of-color. They must currently live in California and must be able to provide proof of acceptance to a college or university with the intent to enroll in Fall 2022. Three scholarship winners will receive $3,000 each. College-bound students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grade are invited to submit to a separate poetry contest and the winner will receive $500. Runners-up will receive additional prizes. “Beyond Baroque has a long history of nurturing some of Los Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center has launched the Angeles’ most important literary Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize, a poetry contest voices,” said Quentin Ring, and scholarship for youth poets-of-color in California. executive director of Beyond

And we’re very excited to honor that impact—and to nurture a whole generation of poetic talents— through the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize. Amanda has shown us all how poetry can speak eloquently to the most important social justice issues of our time, and we hope the prize will inspire young poets of color to use their voices to do the same.” The deadline to apply is May 1, 2022 and prize winners will be announced by July 1, 2022. Concert in Solidarity with Ukraine
Classical musicians and guest artists perform at benefit to raise money for refugees
By Kamala Kirk
On May 1, Ukrainian classical musicians and guest artists will perform in “Concert in Solidarity with Ukraine” at Robert Frost Auditorium in Culver City, a benefit that will help raise funds and show local support to the millions of refugees displaced from their homes. Acclaimed concert series Jacaranda, Culver City Forward, Culver City Unified School District, Wende Museum of the Cold War, and Classical Underground are partnering to present an emotion-filled evening of music and poetry curated by Jacaranda’s artistic director, Patrick Scott. Short works by classical Ukrainian, Russian and Polish composers will include living Ukrainians Valentin Silvestrov and Jan Freidlin, as well as the late Miroslav Skoryk, and the Romantic modernists Reinhold Gliere and Sergei Prokofiev.

Tickets are free with a suggested $25 minimum charitable contribution by phone on-site. Donations will be solicited during the concert with a goal of raising significant funds for Direct Relief to provide critical health care for victims of the war in Ukraine. “Ukrainian culture, history and identity are under attack by Russia, but we can share and celebrate the music, poetry and art here while helping address the physical suffering of Ukrainian refugees in Europe,” said Thomas Small, former Culver City Mayor and CEO of Culver City Forward.

Healing Arts
Iconic art walk is back to support Venice Family Clinic
By Bridgette M. Redman
Art can heal. Not just for those who see or own it, but also for those who benefit from art sale proceeds. The Venice Family Clinic provides comprehensive health care to 45,000 people each year—regardless of their income, insurance or immigration status. They have 17 sites in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, Inglewood, Culver City, Redondo Beach, Carson, Gardena and Hawthorne along with two mobile clinics. However, it gets expensive taking care of people who aren’t able to pay. There was a time in their history—1979 to be specific—where they were in danger of having to close. Those who wanted to ensure it survived, came up with an idea, an idea that launched an annual fundraiser that continues to this day, the Venice Family Clinic Art Walk and Auction. They approached Frank Gehry,

the world-renowned architect, and he reached out to the artistic community. Artists opened their studios, donated artwork and all the proceeds went to keeping the clinic operating. This year, organizers have built on that legacy while reimagining the iconic event. It is taking place from now through May 1, and people can bid on more than 200 art works from established, mid-career and emerging artists. Bidding takes place in person at Santa Monica Place or online at artsy.net/veniceartwork. Part of the reimagining includes an NFT auction that is hosted on Nifty Gateway. Artists from the NFT market have been invited to participate in the first NFT auction. They include new works from such artists as Tomaso Abertini, Bryan Brinkman, Nina Hawkins, Parin Heidari and Mieke Marple. “We are excited to provide this new way for everyone to view and bid on the art in person at our new Venice Art Walk Gallery,” said Elizabeth Benson Forer, CEO and executive director of Venice Family Clinic. “After having to spend two years apart, we are also energized to have a space to help us reconnect safely with the community that makes Venice Family Clinic Art Walk & Auction a special–and vital–source of funding for the Clinic’s programs and services.” “Welcoming artists from the NFT market feels like a bold but natural next step in the evolution of this important Clinic fundraiser,” Forer added. “We are grateful to meet more people through this innovative format who are driven to help us harness our collective power to advance greater health equity.” This year’s art walk is honoring contemporary artist and activist, Andrea Bowers, as the Signature Artist. Her artwork will be displayed at the Venice Art Walk Gallery at Santa Monica Place. Based in Los Angeles, she works in such media as video, drawing and installation. She is on the graduate faculty at Otis College of Art and Design. “Health care is a human right,” Bowers said. “I’m so grateful the Venice Family Clinic exists so that people in need have access to quality health care they can afford. The Clinic alone cannot meet the tremendous necessity for health care. Our society must do more—for places like the Clinic, for their patients and the millions of uninsured in this country.” Other artists who have donated art work for the auction include John Baldessari, Gary Baseman, Billy Al Bengston, Bumblebeelovesyou, Fritz Chesnut, Rosson Crow, Laddie John Dill, Sam Durant, FriendsWithYou, Alexandra Grant, Lauren Greenfield, Channing Hansen, KAWS, Grant Levy Lucero, Ed Moses, Ed Ruscha, Analia Saban, The Art of Chase, Zoe Walsh, Brenna Youngblood and Gajin Fujita.
