Beyond Baroque launches Amanda Gorman Future Voices prize By Kamala Kirk eyond Baroque Literary Arts Center has launched the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize, a poetry contest and scholarship for youth poets-of-color in California. Based in Venice and founded in 1968, Beyond Baroque is a nonprofit public space dedicated to cultivating new writing and expanding the public’s knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. The Future Poetry Prize is named for Beyond Baroque alumna, Amanda Gorman, who is a graduate of Santa Monica’s New Roads School and the youngest Inaugural Poet in American history. Gorman began her development as a poet by participating in the Beyond Baroque Student Poets’ Program, and later credited Beyond Baroque as the place “where a young poet found the

love of her life.” The prize continues Gorman’s legacy by supporting California student poets-of-color in their development. The Future Voices Poetry Prize is open from now until May for all poets currently enrolled in grades 9 to 12 self-identifying as Black, Indigenous or people-of-color. They must currently live in California and must be able to provide proof of acceptance to a college or university with the intent to enroll in Fall 2022. Three scholarship winners will receive $3,000 each. College-bound students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grade are invited to submit to a separate poetry contest and the winner will receive $500. Runners-up will receive additional prizes. “Beyond Baroque has a long history of nurturing some of Los Angeles’ most important literary voices,” said Quentin Ring, executive director of Beyond

Baroque. “We’ve been thrilled to witness the worldwide impact Amanda has made through her poetry and advocacy. And we’re very excited to honor that impact—and to nurture a whole generation of poetic talents— through the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize. Amanda has shown us all how poetry can speak eloquently to the most important social justice issues of our time, and we hope the prize will inspire young poets of color to use their voices to do the same.” The deadline to apply is May 1, 2022 and prize winners will be announced by July 1, 2022.
