Giving Back to the Community

Marina del Rey Historical Society hosts Sunday brunch fundraiser By Kamala Kirk n June 5, the Marina del Rey Historical Society hosted a Sunday brunch fundraiser at Marina del Rey Hotel. It was the organization’s first major fundraiser in several years since the pandemic. A group of MBA students at CSUN David Nazarian College of Business and Economics volunteered to help throw the event to raise funds for MDR Historical Society and as a way for them to celebrate their accomplishments with the community. The event included a silent auction and attendees were also entered into a raffle to win VIP passes to The Magic Castle. MDR Historical Society serves the Marina del Rey community as the primary source of the area’s historical archives and information. To showcase the exhibits and

historical resources of the community in the Fisherman’s Village gallery, continued funding and community involvement is needed. “We would like to thank the MBA students from CSUN David Nazarian College of Business and Economics, the volunteers of the MDR Historical Society, the Marina del Rey Hotel, and all of our supporters who helped make our first big fundraiser in three years a huge success,” said Howard Wenger, president and gallery manager of the MDR Historical Society. “Your continued support keeps the MDR Historical Society an informative and vital part of the community.”

You’re Not Alone

In-school program offers safe, nurturing spaces for students with incarcerated loved ones By Sara Edwards hildren with incarcerated loved ones need safe spaces at school, away from the pressures of teachers or students. To help these children, POPS the Club offers weekly meetings, including at Venice and Santa Monica high schools. These meetings are shared through word of mouth or fliers. There, kids aren’t pressured to participate or share their feelings. Students who attend can participate in activities like mindfulness and art projects, or just sit and enjoy the company of their peers. There’s no pressure to participate. “We want to make sure that the club is for them,” said POPS program director Arielle Harris. “The support comes from within from their peers and other people who are in the room because there’s this mutual understanding of what it’s like to

POPS the Club is a school-based program with local chapters at Venice High School and Santa Monica High School that provides safe and nurturing spaces for youth whose loved ones are incarcerated. have a loved one who’s incarcerated.” POPS was founded by Amy Friedman, who was married to a man who was incarcerated, and Dennis Danziger, who was an English teacher at Venice High School. Danziger noticed some students were struggling in school because they had a loved one who was incarcerated and were

judged because of it. One student, who was usually quiet, opened up about having a brother in prison. Danziger said that inspired him to start the support program. Within the first three weeks, about 40 students joined. The program has since expanded to schools in Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York and other spots in California.

Harris said there was programming in Alaska as well, but that has been on pause due to the pandemic. The other programs were moved to Zoom when COVID-19 caused in-person learning to go virtual. Harris said they didn’t want to take away POPS’ resources, especially because the pandemic was traumatic for students. So, the programs would meet twice a week and have artists, writers and photographers lead students through exercises. The activities have returned to in-person since the school year started. The students aren’t left alone during the summer. POPS the Club meets three to four times a week during the break. Each year, the program takes art, poetry and other media created by the students and compiles them into a published anthology that can be purchased from the club’s website. “It’s really cool for them to be

published while they’re in middle school and high school, and it’s really cool to see how it brightens their face,” Harris said. “It also allows people to read this anthology and get a different perspective of what it’s like to have a loved one who’s in prison.” Harris said POPS is also helpful for teachers and faculty because it gives them a better understanding of what their students might be going through and improves academic support. “We want to stay in schools and even though POPS is a quick meeting during their lunchtime, it’s a program that’s available to them,” Harris said. “It’s really helpful for them to have that space where they get to share a meal with people who are experiencing similar things.”

By Kamala Kirk fter a two-year pandemic hiatus, Summer Adventure is back. The affordable summer enrichment program, which was canceled in 2020 and 2021, is co-sponsored by the Santa Monica Education Foundation and Santa MonicaMalibu Council of PTAs. The program is open to children in kindergarten to ninth grade, and runs for five weeks starting June 20 at Roosevelt Elementary and Lincoln Middle schools. Elementary classes include STEM, sports, art, chess, video game design and theater. A full morning program for incoming kindergarteners is a popular option, supporting an easy transition to elementary school in the fall. Middle school students will have the opportunity to learn to sing, cook, produce their own songs, create art, make films and play field games. Incoming sixth-graders can prepare for their transition to middle school with“Middle School Masters,” which is offered on weekly for up to five weeks. “We are especially proud of our transition classes that have helped countless students ease into their new school experience, whether they are starting kindergarten or sixth grade,” said Alison Havel, Ed Foundation board president. Summer Adventure gives students the chance to enjoy an enriching summer camp experience in a relaxed school setting. Most classes are taught by SMMUSD teachers who are excited to share their passion in a specific area with students for a few weeks over the summer. “We are proud to offer such a comprehensive summer enrichment program for our students,” said Gabrielle Cohen, president of the Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs. “For the past 39 years, students have had a lot of fun, have made new friends, and have stayed engaged in learning during the summer. We’re so excited to be back in person again this year.”

Culver City’s Tito’s Tacos Is All in the Family

Third-generation owner Lynne Davidson receives Lifetime Achievement Award PHOTO BY CHRIS MORTENSON

W

Tito’s Tacos in Culver City was founded in 1959 by Benjamin Davidson and is now run by his granddaughter, Lynne Davidson, and her husband, Wirt Morton. America’s best burrito in 2015, as well as the California Restaurant Association Foundation 2017 Restaurant Neighbor Award and Senate District 30’s Small Business of the Year in 2018. Davidson said she has been running Tito’s Tacos since the late 1980s when her dad semi-retired. She attributed the restaurant’s success to its use of fresh ingredients and its family atmosphere. The employees work hard, long hours and in close proximity to one another, and they make the most of it. “Everybody is so close to each other,” Davidson said. “You’re shoulder to shoulder with everyone, so let’s make this great, let’s have some fun. “We have a couple of people who work here who are really good with jokes. It feels like everyone is family.”

PAGE 10 THE ARGONAUT JUNE 16, 2022

Family is important to all involved. The restaurant’s first employee was Amado Madera, who was hired at 24 and retired at 80, and helped Davidson’s grandfather develop the recipes — and Madera’s brother was the main cook for many years. Another noteworthy fact: Madera’s daughter, Denice Renteria, is running for Culver City City Council. “It’s the people I work with and the customers, it’s so much fun,” Davidson said. “It’s so rewarding to see people sit down, eat their tacos and smile. We try to have a good time. “That’s what we do here: we sell Mexican food. We want everybody to come and be happy they bought their tacos here.” Celebrities have shared their love of Tito’s Tacos. Jack Black boasted of Tito’s Tacos’

breakfasts on Instagram. “We generally don’t talk about that, to be honest,” she said. “We want to keep them as customers.” Their customers are so loyal that those who leave the area have been known to make Tito’s their first stop whenever they fly into LAX. “We get a fair amount of online orders, and sometimes people will place the order in the airport before they board so they can pick it up after they land, hopefully,” Davidson said. “That’s kind of risky these days with all the flight delays.” Tito’s Tacos is a singular establishment, though at one time there was an Orange County franchise. “This one restaurant does fine,” Davidson said. “Culver City is a great place. It’s been a small town environment so it’s homey and comfortable.” Davidson was set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020, but the ceremony was postponed until this June because of the pandemic. Tito’s Tacos weathered the pandemic after having to close for two and a half months and then reduce their hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as their number of employees from 75 to 42. “I’m glad it’s over,” she said. “I’m not sure I could survive that again — the stress would kill me.”

As for retirement for Davidson? “I have some thoughts of trying to cut back on my hours a bit,” she said. “But what would I do with myself?” At the moment she’s simply thrilled to be honored by the California Restaurant Association and received her award on June 10 during the Elizabeth Burns Lifetime Achievement Award Gala Dinner at Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica. “It was truly incredible to have all of my restaurant friends at the event who came from all over the state,” she said. “I was overwhelmed by the wonderful words and support by people I have so much respect for. It was also really special to have over 25 high schoolers in attendance at this annual charity event that raises essential funds for local ProStart programs, instructing young people on appropriate culinary techniques and management skills needed to gain employment in the restaurant industry. “The entire evening – from the dinner and dancing to the Mariachi band to the speakers – was just fantastic.”

By Marin Heinritz hen Lynne Davidson was 17, she got her first job at her grandfather’s restaurant in Culver City. But when she asked for weekends off, she learned what it meant to work for the family business. “If it’s not convenient for you to work when the customers are here then I don’t need you,” Davidson’s grandfather told her. “I gulped a big glob of air,” she remembered. “It was true. After a couple minutes I said, ‘OK, Got it!’” From that fateful start in 1971 to becoming a manager and now owner of celebrated Tito’s Tacos, it’s that work ethic and commitment to excellence that undoubtedly helped earn Davidson the California Restaurant Association’s Elizabeth Burns Lifetime Achievement Award. Davidson said she learned a lot from her grandfather, as well as her father who took over the family business in the 1960s when her grandfather’s health started to decline. Her grandfather continued to show up for work even after he stepped down from management. “In the morning he would come in, wash all the windows and then go home,” Davidson said. Tito’s Tacos has been in business for more than 63 years and is known best for its crunchy hard shell beef tacos topped with cold cheddar and iceberg lettuce. “They taste fabulous,” Davidson said. “I ate one yesterday, it was so good. Make sure to put lots of salsa on them.” The salsa is made daily, Davidson said, much like other offerings. Hot tortillas are delivered daily, the tortilla chips are fried on site daily in lard. (“I’m not sure you should be able to call it Mexican food if you’re not using lard in it,” Davidson said.) The recipes have remained since the 1960s after a few minor tweaks, such as eliminating chorizo from the taco meat because some customers didn’t like it. Tito’s Tacos won an award for

The Santa Monica Animal Shelter Open House Fundraiser and donations raised will go to helping the animals at the shelter. Due to the success of the open house, it will hopefully become an annual tradition. “The event was a tremendous success and a wonderful day,“ said Elizabeth Noble, SMASF Board of Directors chair. Operated by a Volunteer Board Directors, SMASF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed by the city of Santa Monica in association with the Santa Monica Police Department. The mission of the foundation is to raise funds and support the Santa Monica Animal Shelter. In November 2020, the volunteer board of directors was reformed by the city of Santa Monica. The donations and funds they raise go directly to the Santa Monica Animal Shelter to cover veterinary costs, facility improvements and upgrades. They hope to create a proper dog play and enrichment area soon. “Our mission is to support the shelter by raising funds for animals that need extra veterinary care and help with needed facility upgrades,” Noble said. “We also promote adoptions by showcasing many of the wonderful animals that are available for adoption on our social media pages.” Noble, a Santa Monica native and longtime shelter volunteer, is a professional photographer who uses her skills to take photos of the available pets in hopes they’ll be adopted.

She regularly volunteers her time at the shelter because she believes “by spending time with the animals, it helps bring joy and happiness to their day and helps them to feel safe and comfortable while they are at the shelter.” She added, “It feels wonderful to be able to give back and help the animals at the shelter and truly know that you are making a difference.” As chair, Noble spearheaded the open house as a special day of fun to bring community awareness to the shelter and its needs. The event ran from noon to 3 p.m. with over 100 people in attendance. Notable guests included Police Chief Ramon Batista, City Manager David White, and City Councilperson Gleam Davis. “We are very grateful to everyone who supported us at our fundraiser and helped to make this a successful event,” Noble said. With an abundance of local community businesses supporting the free and public event, it offered something for everyone. Donations went directly to the shelter. Kids met with the Santa Monica Police Department Mounted Unit horses, had their faces painted by Magical Atelier and received balloon hats by Wild About Balloons LA. The Kona Ice Truck was on hand to offer sweet treats and there were treats donated by Vienna Pastry. Alan’s Aquarium supported the fundraiser by bringing a tortoise and other creatures, and Michael Chill hosted an informational show and tell featuring a rescued indigenous bird from Wild Wings. To help support the cause, visitors participated in a raffle and, for a small donation, won

prizes. A silent auction featured unique experiences to raise money for the shelter and create a lively atmosphere. “We were able to have a very fun day, raise funds for the shelter, and because visitors could tour the shelter and meet the available animals, we were able to help many animals find their forever homes,” Noble said. Usually, visitors need to make an appointment to meet the available animals at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter. On this day, guests toured the shelter on their own, leading to a number of adoptions. In three hours, 13 pets (four dogs and nine cats) were adopted and found their forever homes. More than half of the adoptable pets who were at the shelter on

that day were adopted. This number doesn’t include people who were at the event and later came back to adopt a pet. To make a donation, learn more about SMASF and how you can help the animals at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter, visit smasf.org.

Max to the Rescue

17-year-old volunteers at PetSpace to help animals By Michele Robinson eventeen-year-old Max Huber is passionate about helping animals and has logged over 300 volunteer hours at Wallis Annenberg PetSpace in Playa Vista. “It’s easy to want to volunteer there,” Huber said. “The staff is very welcoming, warm and friendly. They make me feel very comfortable.” A Playa Vista resident, Huber always wanted pets in his life. Since he was 5, he begged his parents for a dog. His persistence finally paid off five years later when they adopted Bauzer, which helped to spark his love of animals. “All animals have their own personalities, each is a different and fun experience,” Huber said. By the age of 13, Boy Scouts no longer appealed to Huber. Looking for a fresh way to volunteer in the community, he sought out the newly opened PetSpace. From then on, he spent much of

Because teens younger than the age of 15 need an adult volunteer to accompany them, his mother, Stefanie, is also a long-term volunteer. Huber can volunteer on his own now, but they continue to volunteer together. “We do it together,” Stefanie said. “We hang out and both look forward to it. It also helps keep us close during the teen years, which has been really nice.” Tto volunteer, Huber and his mother attended training sessions for each volunteer job they performed. “Before COVID, we got to work one on one with the animals and got on the job training,” Huber said. “You also learn as you go.” Huber stays passionate by diversifying his volunteer activities. Huber enjoys helping out with Paws and Pages storytime, Mutt Manners and Agility dog training classes, animal care and guest services.

Paws and Pages is geared for children ages 2 to 10 on Saturdays and Sundays at noon. For storytime, their duties depend on what is needed. This may include craft testing, distributing crafts, and introducing the special pup for adoption with their handler. For the Mutt Manners and Agility community training classes, they volunteer as an assistant. This includes welcoming and checking in the guests and their pups, and making sure they have doggie blankets, treats and water for class. For animal care, they get to socialize and play with the kittens and cats, and tidy the animal rooms and facility as they go. And for guest services, they can talk with potential adopters and show them around the facility. “I like that there is so much to do there including a diverse amount of activities,” Huber said. “I help with story time for kids by preparing the crafts. I

also assist in the dog training classes, enrichment and do whatever it takes to make the class run smoothly.” Huber is a junior at New West Charter School in West Los Angeles. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA, academics are important to him. Although he is enrolled in all honors classes, he particularly excels in STEM subjects. When Huber isn’t volunteering at PetSpace, he tutors friends in calculus, chemistry and physics. His parents pay him to tutor his younger sister in algebra. He plans to major in biochemistry in college with the hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Huber is so passionate about becoming a veterinarian that for spring break he went to Countryside Veterinary Services in Knoxville, Tennessee, to participate in a preveterinary internship with farm animals. During the internship, he worked with dogs, (Continued fon Page 18)

Azure Printed Homes creates sustainable spaces with 3D printing and recycled plastics By Sara Edwards irst there were 3D printed prosthetics, machine parts and medical tools. Now, 3D printing is making its mark in real estate. Azure Printed Homes in Culver City is changing the way people buy and build homes with its 3D printed home layout to welcome the next dimension of living. Azure Printed Homes was launched in 2019 by Ross Maguire and Gene Eidelman. The co-founders noticed that 3D printing was increasing in popularity in the construction space and saw a potential for 3D printing in home construction as a more sustainable way to build homes. “We’re doing it in a (prefabricated) way where we can print in a factory where we’re able to print more of the structure and, in essence, speed up the process to another level by being able to print the walls, the floor, the roof and create an entire shell in that one day print,” Maguire said. Azure uses recycled plastics in its printing material and, since plastics take centuries to properly break down, it creates a sturdy, sustainable building material that won’t degrade after a few years. According to the company’s website, using 3D printing technology with recycled plastic materials allows the company to build structures 70% faster and 20% to 30% less expensive than current building methods. “Our design allows us to maximize space by printing the exterior shell, which I’m convinced would normally take four or five days, but now it’s in a one-day print,” Maguire said. Azure’s debut design is a Backyard Studio template that’s about 120 square feet, which can be used as a home office space, yoga room or gaming space. Their second design, the ADU, starts at 360 square feet and can be used as a guest house or rental space similar to a studio bedroom. The sloped edges on one side and accent wall on the opposite were a creative design move by Maguire and Eidelman to keep the structure from looking like a plain, boxy room in the backyard. “We were trying to come up with a cool, modern and slick look while taking advantage of the fact that a printer can create all these weird and wonderful shapes so we didn’t want to create just some kind of square box,” Maguire said. “We also have lots of ideas of future models and different ways of using the same concept of the same printer but just to create a different output.” The Backyard Studio has multiple customizable options from interior finishes and wall choices to adding HVAC and solar panels. Maguire said they plan to launch an

The entire process from ordering to delivery takes about five days. “Conceivably, people will be able to order on a Sunday and have it ready to be delivered by that Friday,” he said. “We come from being general contractors so we’re just trying to make it a lot faster, easier, less expensive and better for the environment than anything that has been done before.” Azure’s facility in Los Angeles has one printer. Maguire said the facility is in the middle of being built up to be fully operational with three printers to be able to print three models each day. He also said within the next year, the company plans to recreate the same production line and assembly process in multiple locations where they see demand for affordable and sustainable housing like Arizona, Texas and Florida. The company also wants to be a potential solution to affordable housing and homelessness issues. “We’re planning to have small, microfactories that will meet local demand and keep building from there,” Maguire said. “Creating affordable housing and a solution that will benefit the globe, both environmentally and socially from the fact that we’re creating these so quickly is the main message we want to get across.”

‘Out of the Blue’ Into the Louver Latest Hammersley exhibit for sale By Paul Wozniak hrough his experimenting with organic shapes and contrasting colors, Los Angeles-based artist Frederick Hammersley created a unique lens of thought and feeling through an incorporation of his lived experiences and interactions with others. The L.A. Louver is hosting work by Hammersley until July 15; this is the largest current presentation of his work and includes a range of pieces, primarily focused on hard-edge and organic abstraction. The latest survey exhibition on display may not be the biggest exhibition of his work in recent years, but this time the pieces are all for sale. “I consider this work to be timeless and universal. I don’t think that one needs to pigeonhole something as West Coast,” said Elizabeth East, director of the L.A. Louver. “These works have appeal for people from anywhere, different people from different experiences. These are timeless works. This exhibition we have right now is drawn from works that are in other private collections that those collections have had for upwards of 50 years…and it’s been through this wonderful confluence of various collectors making decisions to deaccession work that we’re able to bring about this exhibition now.” Hammersley was a keen observer of the world around him according to East. “He took inspiration from flowers or people or objects, other objects he identified, that inspired his abstractions,” East said. The ‘Out of Blue’ exhibition showcases pieces spanning the artist’s portfolio from 1945 through the mid-1980s. “It’s certainly not intended to be a full survey of the work because he had a quite long career…I feel that within the time period we’re addressing it’s actually a very, very strong presentation of what Frederick accomplished,” East said. The exhibit includes one of Hammersley’s earliest works, a photograph from 1945 that shows a bombed out building in Berlin where he was stationed at the end of World War II. East said it really shows how Hammersley looked at the world and what his interests were. “We’ve positioned that photograph at the beginning of the exhi-

and museum goers alike. “As it stands, I am grateful for the fact that Frederick was very good at maintaining his own notes and about the development of his work because curators, art historians, conservationists have had increased interest in looking at those and in fact, through the donation of the foundation of the artists archive, not only to the Archives of American Art, but also to the Getty, the Getty Conservation Institute as well has been a source of inspiration to scholars and to conservationists to examine Frederick’s work and recognize the gift that he has given to research from this period of time,” East said. But in order to appreciate the full impact of the works, East said one really needs to see them in person. “The works are presented in our second floor gallery, where we have natural light and I think that everything looks beautiful,” East said. “But people have to come in and experience it for themselves. The palettes, the colors, the textures, surfaces. These are very beautifully made, finely made paintings. And we’re thrilled that we’re able to present them to an audience publicly.”

bition. And I think it’s sort of holds a lot of seed of how he was to develop his work,” East said. The photograph is displayed near another work called ‘Seed,’ which East said is rare for its scale. “I think [Seed] is an amazing painting in itself,” East said. “So to begin the show with those two works, which are sort of catty corner to each other in our presentation, sets the platform for the unfolding of what is to come. We have some beautiful examples of the artist’s painting but also his approach to composition through different media.” Part of the West Coast abstractionist movement in the 1950s, Hammersley led with a hard-edge painting technique that ran counter to the abstract expressionism dominating the East Coast art scene. “To talk about the two primary impulses in Frederick’s art is the kind of curvilinear or what we refer to as the organic abstractions, which are intuitively and more emotionally driven,” East said. “They have and often have a more textural orientation made with a brush. All his frames, by the way, were made were made by him.” Hammersley’s long-lasting impact as one of the “Four Abstract Classicists” along with Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson and John McLaughlin continues to resonate with museum curators

Santa Monica middle school student to perform at Carnegie Hall move on to the stage, she said she gives them 12 seconds just to look around and be in awe about being on the same stage as such musical greats as Peter Tchaikovsky, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. The secondary benefit is that the musicians get to meet other young people with similar passions. “This involves students from all over the country and all over the world,” Woo said. “Through the power of music, it’s a collaborative experience unlike any other. It really is true about music being the universal language.” She said that the first time she conducted the orchestra was in 2019 and there were students from London, India and other parts of the world. Many of them were making friends and building memories that they’ll have with them for life. “The most special thing is the connection that we feel as humans through music,” Woo said. Fitzgerald started playing guitar five years ago, but there was no place for him to do that at the middle school except jazz band, which meant he would need to learn a new instrument. By Bridgette M. Redman Having to learn the upright bass while in pandemic isolation for two years didn’t stop Grayson Fitzgerald, a student at John Adams Middle School (JAMS) in Santa Monica, from achieving some of the highest honors possible for middle school musicians. He will join other middle schoolers from around the United States and Canada, all top-ranked musicians for their age, to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. They will have five days of learning from conductors, rehearsing and playing the role of tourist. They’ll then perform in a concert open to the public on June 18. He will be joined there by JAMS director of instrumental music, Angela Woo, who will be conducting the middle school honors orchestra for the third time. Woo has been Fitzgerald’s orchestra director since he started middle school. Woo, who has watched many young musicians participate in the program both before and during the pandemic, said one of the top benefits of the program is that the students get to experience the incredible history of Carnegie Hall. When they first

Grayson Fitzgerald is a student at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica who will be performing among other top-ranked musicians at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 18. Orchestra, suggested the upright bass and loaned him an instrument to learn on — and later a second one after Fitzgerald grew 12 inches. It was a smooth transition. “The bass has the first four strings as the guitar,” Fitzgerald explained. “It transfers over a lot of the knowledge that I hadn’t been taught. Also, I just love the sound. You have a part in every piece, you’re contributing a lot.” It was a good match and even though Fitzgerald had to learn while in isolation, he is now in three of the school’s highest level instrumental groups—chamber orchestra and wind ensemble where he plays the string bass, and jazz band where he plays the guitar. Earlier this year, he was selected to participate in the California All State and All Southern Honors Orchestras. “It’s a very competitive, really exciting opportunity,” Woo said. “You meet students of a certain caliber who come together. The experience of performing at the all-state level is really an honor, really remarkable. I know Grayson had such a great time. When he came back, he was sharing that experi-

ence with some of our younger students, encouraging them to audition for next year.” Fitzgerald did say that the pandemic afforded him extra time to practice and to explore the instrument while finding his personal expression of it. He praised his music teachers for figuring out a way to make rehearsing happen over Zoom. He is grateful, though, to again be performing live with his fellow musicians. “The invitation to perform with other student musicians from around the world at Carnegie Hall is an amazing way to end this school year, my time in middle school, and to celebrate the return to performing music in person,” Fitzgerald said. Woo said that one of the things that really sets Fitzgerald apart is his generosity as a performer. “Grayson likes to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to shine,” Woo said. “He never ever makes it about him. It’s all about what we can do as a collective. He’s been such a remarkable leader in that way. He is one of the most respectful, polite students you will ever meet. But he’s also ambitious. He rises to the challenge. He will push himself and his peers to do their absolute best.” This summer, in addition to the Carnegie concert series, Fitzgerald is looking forward to once again participating in the Stanford jazz camp. He did it last summer, but it was all on Zoom. As fun as that was, he said he’s looking forward to being in the dorm, participating in person and getting to participate in jam sessions with fellow musicians. Fitzgerald is quick to credit his many music teachers and mentors. He said that he’s had an amazing private teacher for years: Erik Shiboski. “He’s helped me from the very start, even before I came to JAMS,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s been great helping me every single week through all the pieces (of music).” Fitzgerald added that as wonderful as the music has been, what makes the JAMS music program so amazing is the community that it builds, all the friends that he’s made and the teachers who help everyone in their journey.

cats, reindeer, sheep, horses and goats. He also observed canine veterinary surgeries and received hands-on training. He assisted in administering vaccines and grooming procedures. “I had the opportunity to help a newborn colt learn to nurse from its mother,” Huber said. Huber also hopes that his efforts will

inspire other teens to volunteer at Annenberg PetSpace. “It’s always a good idea to help your community with whatever you are passionate about,” Huber said. “It’s fun to volunteer and cool to give back.”

How to Deal with a Neighbor Dispute Disputes with neighbors are prevalent. Some of the most frequent reasons people report having conflicts with the people who live around them include: • Noise: Maybe your neighbors have a different sleep schedule than your own or enjoy late-night parties, but overall most people surveyed say that this is their top complaint with their neighbors.

of the lawn you should mow or where a fence can go. • Parking: If you live in the suburbs this might not be as big of an issue, but if you live in an urban area, then parking can become a bigger problem. Even in the suburbs, it can be an issue if for example someone is parking on the street when they shouldn’t be or if they are blocking your driveway.

• Pets: Problems with pets can include not cleaning up after them on other people’s property, barking at all hours, or maybe a pet that’s aggressive or not well-trained.

Regardless of the specifics, what should you do if you’re having an issue with a neighbor?

• Appearance of a home: If there’s a visual nuisance in a neighbor’s front or back yard, it can lead to disputes. Offensive items on a property, lawns that aren’t well-kept, holiday decorations that overstay their welcome, and trash are all specific situations that impact the appearance of a home and can create a dispute.

Before you take any action, consider whether or not the issue you’re having with a neighbor impacts you in any major way. It may not be worth raising the issue if it’s not something that’s truly affecting your quality of life.

• Property boundaries: Dealing with where one property ends and another begins can contribute to problems between neighbors. For example, you may argue about how much

Evaluate the Situation

We all get annoyed sometimes, but what your neighbor is doing might not be that unreasonable. Also, if something is a one-time thing and it doesn’t happen again, you might not need to say anything

PAGE 20 AT HOME – THE ARGONAUT’S REAL ESTATE SECTION JUNE 16, 2022

Keep a Log of the Events If you’ve taken the time to cool off and evaluate the situation and you still feel like it’s a real issue that you’re going to have to address at some point, keep a log of the offending events. For example, if your neighbor is having a loud party every Friday night, make notes. Know if Any Rules or Guidelines are Being Broken If you live in an apartment community or you have a homeowners’ association, there may be rules against what your neighbor is doing. If that’s the case, you might be able to talk to the governing organization and see if they can handle the situation. While you’re at it, if you want to resolve an issue, you may have more power in numbers. Talk to other neighbors and see if they’re bothered by the same things as you. If so, you might approach the offending neighbor as a group. Try to Avoid a Face-to-Face Conversation If possible, try to approach your neighbor in writing with a letter or email, as opposed to

going to them in person. It can escalate a situation if you go to your neighbor in person. When you’re writing them, be direct and polite. You might also mention any compromises you have considered. For example, if their dog is continuously barking, maybe you suggest that someone take the dog out during the day while they’re at work. Finally, if you can’t solve your neighborly dispute, you might need the help of a third party. It can be a professional mediator, someone from your housing association or a landlord. Don’t immediately go to a lawyer or the police unless something dangerous or illegal is happening. Regardless of the outcome, remember this is someone you’re going to continue to live near, so try your best to keep things calm and relaxed, no matter how frustrated you are.
