David and Michelle Sarraf recently opened McCall’s Meat & Fish Co. on Montana Avenue.
By Oliver Grynberg
McCall’s Meat and Fish Co., a neighborhood staple in Los Feliz for celebrated reputation around Los Angeles, and Schneider is excited to offer what he believes one location. This attention to detail is also brought to the fish and meat that over a decade, has opened a new location on Santa Monica’s popular Montana Avenue. Founded in 2010 by specialty chefs Nathan McCall and Karen Yoo, the one-stop shop for gourmet groceries, meat and fish focuses on providing fine-dining and restaurant quality products for local customers. In January 2022, new owners David and Michelle Sarraf opened the Santa Monica location to expand McCall’s reach and to bring their services to an area with few options for high-quality meat and fish. In Los Feliz, McCall’s thrived on strong relationships with local residents and chefs. “I’ve seen kids go from middle school to college,” said Olin Schneider, vice president of operations. “We wanted a neighborhood feel. We’d keep coming back to that when we’d walk on Montana.” The new location brings eastside vendors to the Westside, while highlighting other local small businesses. Eastside products like Kruegermann Pickles, Zab’s Hot Sauce and Jam from the restaurant Sqirl are all available at the new McCall’s. The location is the only Westside retail spot to sell Jyan Isaac Bread apart from Isaac’s own bakery on Ocean Park Boulevard. Isaac, who began selling bread during quarantine to friends and family, has a is the “best bread in the city.” Central to the McCall’s experience is the chance to leave the store knowing how to prepare the products they sell. “It’s the conversations too,” Schneider said. “Customers are going to leave with the confidence that they can go home and have a great experience with somebody over their meal.” McCall’s offers a one-stopshop for all elements of a successful meal. “If you come in looking to make sushi and all we can offer you is fish, it’s not the boutique experience you are expecting from a store like us,” Schneider said. “The best possible rice we are getting from Japan and the best possible soy sauce that we are getting from the market in Japan.” Schneider hopes customers can skip out on LA traffic by minimizing their shopping to McCall’s sells. “Sourcing is always done with flavor and quality first,” Schneider said, though sustainability, humane products and an absence of hormones and genetically modified organisms are also significant parts of the equation. Free parking in the back makes it easy to navigate an often packed Montana Avenue and get home quickly with all the ingredients for a delicious meal. Take it from Schneider: “It’s all about the extra details. There is nothing like what we are doing in the area.”
