Tips for Teens to Improve Mental Health While Using Social Media

OPINION

• Find and interact with your tribe. Social media allows us unparalleled access to people and groups with whom we share interests. Teens can take advantage of these connections to build networks of folks with similar hobbies or pursuits. With millions of people starting new groups every day, it is easier than ever to find a group of people who enjoy the same things and want to connect – whether it is an online book club, a group of like-minded aspiring chefs, a cadre of dedicated hikers or something else entirely. “Identifying and engaging with people who benefit your mental health is key,” Baty said. “Finding people who ‘fill your cup’ instead of draining your energy empowers us to feel stronger and more positive.” As an example, she shared that one of her patients began teaching online Zumba classes when the pandemic began. The patient now leads both in-person and online community classes of like-minded exercise enthusiasts that have become support systems for those involved.

• Learn and try new things. Social media can provide teens with windows into new information and experiences–from games, recipes and dance trends to do-it-yourself tutorials on how to fix a hole in the wall or build a compass. Online experiences have also become commonplace during COVID-19: virtual concerts, podcasts, seminars and lessons are great opportuni ties for teens to improve their knowledge and self-confidence.

• Don’t be afraid to reach out to others IRL. Most impor tantly, according to Baty, is not to let teens’ use of social media isolate them. “Social connection is absolutely vital to teens’ mental health,” Baty said. “We all have experienced increased social isolation since COV ID-19 began, and social media can be a wonderful tool to bridge that gap–especially for teens struggling with issues they may not be able to share at home. But it is essential to build connections with others in real life for deeper well-being.”

• Always exercise best prac tices and use social media in moderation. In addition to exercising caution and follow ing best practices for safe social media use, teens should limit their social media and screen time to improve mental health. “Treat your body well and your brain will follow,” Baty tells teens. “Introducing a ‘digital sunset’ before a good night’s sleep can help improve sleep patterns and reduce anxiety. When you do use social media, take regular breaks to get outside and make sure to interact with nature and participate in physical activities. To promote well-being, hydrate regularly and sleep six to eight hours each night.”

Courtesy of Venice Family Clinic V enice Family Clinic is providing a series of tips to help teens navigate social media in a mentally healthy and responsible way. While it is well-documented that social media can negatively impact mental health, it also provides access to a wealth of resources, communities and information. And it is not going away any time soon: 90% of teens ages 13 to 17 across the U.S. report having used some type of social media, and American teens spent more time than ever on social media channels during the past two years of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.Firstand foremost, ensuring teen safety on social media must be the main priority. Keys to safely navigating social me dia include limiting contact information in profiles and posts; never giving away personal information like current location, phone numbers or addresses; keeping private information private; and never meeting up with an unknown person without a parent or friend present. They also include making sure that information is coming from reputable sources. In addition to these guidelines for ensuring teens’ physical safety, Venice Family Clinic’s director of behavioral health, Iliniza (Nisa) Baty, has pro vided the following four tips to help teens and their families use social media in a mentally healthy way.

Ways to avoid isolation can include seeking more face-toface time (even if through video chat), limiting digital notifica tions and restricting the number of hours spent online. And, as Baty points out, social media is far from the only avenue for help with mental health. Local community groups, clubs and sports teams are great outlets for improving mental health, and many schools offer counsel ing and programs to assist teens.

Jess Smith, VP of marketing at Groundwork Coffee, explained that as a company, Groundwork had already implementedindependentlythecriteria required for the certification. For Groundwork, gaining the B-Corp Certification was more a formality than any companyaltering step. “Since the brand was launched in 1990 it has always been a part of the mission of the brand to do better for people on the planet,” Smith said. “We already were meeting what we needed to do to be a B Corp, but there's a very rigorous submission process that they put you through to bring all the information to prove that you're doing that.”

By Stella Karron F or the past two years, Groundwork Coffee has been working behind the scenes to qualify for the distinguished B Corp Certifica tion. The B Corp Certificate is awarded to companies that agree to meet high standards of performance, accountability and transparency throughout their entire business model.

Part of how Groundwork reached B Corp status is by offering only Certified Organic coffee that is ethically that farmers have

certifications have allowed for consum ers to directly make that connection on the shelf and see that a company is doing what's right for people on the planet,” Smith said. “So [the certifica tion] was a way for us to further tell our story that was easy for people to understand.”Inaddition, Groundwork Coffee hopes that other companies will choose to follow in its footsteps. “We want to be a brand that people look to and are inspired by to make these types of decisions as well,” Smith said. One way in which Groundwork Coffee has accomplished this level of perfor mance, accountability and transparency is by offering only organic coffee. “Coffee is one of the most sprayed crops in the world,” Smith said. “So all conventional coffee that is not organic is being sprayed and the spray runoff goes into water sources, it goes into soil, it harms the environments where people are farming, and ultimately it's not good for anyone consuming it.”

In addition to ensuring that consumers are safe, Groundwork Coffee also dedicates its resources to supporting farmers and their communities. One example of this is through a partnership with the AMUCC, a fair-trade certified association of women working to support women and families by bridging the financial gaps and burdens they face. Through this partnership, Groundwork Coffee is able to support female coffee farmers in Colombia by paying an additional 25 cents per pound for every bag of coffee. The extra 25 cents goes directly into an interest-free revolving credit line, which helps to mitigate short-term cash flow. Especially during the off-season, farmers can go from making mass amounts of income one month to no income the next, and this credit line helps to bridge that gap. Today, Groundwork Coffee has donated almost $45,000 to the association. Groundwork Coffee was founded in 1990 in Venice Beach. Today there are 10 retail locations across LA as well as a location in Portland. Being a Venicebased brand has also helped build the ethical business model Groundwork has today.“The founders really believed in cultivating an environment that was inclusive and supported everyone involved, whether it was customers, consumers, partners,” Smith said. “I think it is a mentality that is part of the culture of the Westside, not only California as the West Coast, but also the Westside of LA definitely contrib uted to that. We try as we grow to help take that foundation and use that same ethos to help support other organizations and other areas where we're growing as well.”

Special Dedication

PAGE 12 THE ARGONAUT AUGUST 11, 2022

By Kamala Kirk Close to 200 family members, close friends and colleagues of the late actor/comedian and beloved Venice community member, Orson Bean, gathered together on his birthday (July 22) for a special dedication ceremony outside of Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice.Previously, the Los Angeles City Council had voted to rename the private driveway (located between Amoroso Court and Venice Boulevard) that is adjacent to the theater in honor of Bean, who passed away in February 2020 when he was struck by two cars on his way to a performance at PRT. Family members wore red scarves as a tribute to Bean’s signature red scarf, and local graffiti and mural artist Jules Muck painted two giant columns depicting Bean’s red scarf intertwined with flowers, which were displayed on both side of the podium. Gwen Troy sang Bean’s favorite gospel sing and Broadway singer Carolyn Magnini of PRT also sang at the event. At the end of the ceremony, Bean’s grandson, Samson Breitbart, unveiled the new Orson Bean Way sign. “We’re very grateful to Mike Bonin for everything that he did to make all of this possible,” said Bean’s wife, actress and longtime Venice resident Alley Mills Bean. “The major vibe that evening was one of love, an old school kind of Venice love. The message from almost all of the speakers, including the political ones like our ex-councilwoman Ruth Gallanter, was that life is simply how well you loved and made people feel loved—which in Orson’s case was his family, the Venice arts community, the people he worked with, his eclectic neighbors and friends,

The event included many guest speakers, who took turns addressing the crowd. They included Bean’s wife; his first wife, Carolyn Maxwell; former councilwoman Ruth Gallanter; director Alex Fernandez; Alex McElvain representing Councilman Mike Bonin, who came up with the idea for the street renaming and saw it through to completion; Apostle Beverly Bam Crawford, who was Bean’s pastor and close friend; Judy Baca, renowned muralist and head of SPARC; Marilyn Fox, artistic director of PRT; Dwight Lewis, chaplain of Midnight Mission; Marc Cherry, creator of “Desperate Housewives”; and TV director Tara Nicole Weir, who worked with Bean when he was on “Desperate Housewives.” “Orson was one of the true pillars of PRT," Fox said. "His generosity, goodness and talent will always be an inspiration to us. He was and always will be a beacon setting the bar for the world-class productions at our theater. We are so thrilled that the City of LA has chosen to honor Orson Bean this way at the very corner of PRT’s mainstage.” Weir added, “It was an amazing and overwhelming, in a good way, evening. All of the different parts of Orson’s life, his family, his faith, his friends, his work on both stage and screen, and his love of this Venice community made up of all these marvelous artists of all walks, together in one place, celebrating him and desperately missing him all at once. I wish I could hear what he would have said if he had unexpectedly stumbled upon this gathering. And see his drawing of all of us. It would no doubt be both outrageous and make us laugh.”

By Bridgette M. Redman As City Garage Theatre has stepped its way back into in-person shows, it’s gone from staging reimagined classics from the absurdist canon to staging a new comedic work, written by one of its co-founders, set on the sunny sands of a Santa Monica“Beachshore.People” by Charles Duncombe runs from now to Sept. 11 at the Santa Monica theater. It is the second offering in their 35th anniversary season. Opening with a talkative woman and her taciturn partner, she’s convinced he’s thinking about other women, specifically the nearby woman in the bikini who really likes fruit salad. With a dollop of comedy, a sprinkling of obsession and a dash of existential panic, the five-person show is a wild ride that invites people back to the theater with a little bit of all that makes City Garage so popular with its patrons. “It certainly has that kind of absurdist humor,” Duncombe said. “It’s an intellectual kind of humor.” Duncombe, a prolific playwright whose work often appears on the City Garage stage, said the story grew out of a dialogue between a couple arguing on the beach. What starts as an ordinary argument, expands into something far more complex.“Itgrew into much more of a reflection on life or the universe and our place in it,” Duncombe said. “How we find each other in relationships, happiness, the nature of happiness, objectification, illusion, and why we desire what we desire. It takes a playful sort of approach to it.”

It is a story that Duncombe said people will connect with and relate to, a story that is out of time, one that is about life, love, sex and existential panic. He hopes they will find some truth in the manic explorations of these sunbathers. “I would hope that people would find some truth in how men and women relate to each other, how they differ, how they’re the same,” Duncombe said, adding that while he hopes people will laugh, he also hopes they will dig deeper. “There’s some truth in the play about our universal need to belong, to find someone to love and be loved by, and that it’s a difficult process that sometimes can go very badly. And some times, actually, if we’re lucky, can be quite wonderful.”

While Duncombe has written many plays for City Garage, he describes most of them as being politically themed or about current social issues. This one is different. “It is a little bit more of a philosophic meditation on relationships and on the human condition itself,” Duncombe said. “It does connect a bit with the absurdist pieces that we’ve done in the past, but it’s to give the audience variety, they can come and laugh, and at the same time have something to think about. A lot of the stuff we do is pretty serious. This is a little lighter and so it just seemed like a nice change of pace.”

Directed by City Garage’s artistic director and co-founder, Frédéri que Michel, the play is very focused on the people, the dialogue and relationships. The set itself is kept simple with clean lines and elements that provide the ambience of the beach. It is designed to be a very simple, clean presentation. The cast features Angela Beyer, Kasey Esser, Marissa Ruiz, Henry Thompson and Naomi Helen Weissberg. Beyer and Thompson play the squabbling couple while Ruiz occupies the distracting beautiful body and Esser is a ripped waiter who provides equal distraction.Beyerhas performed with City Garage for years and Duncombe said she embodies the vulnerabil ity and empathy which is impor tant for this character. “She can play neuroses very well and a kind of self-involvement,” Duncombe said. “She’s somebody that becomes funny by the extremity of their neurotic state. She’s good at creating characters likeThompsonthat.” is a British actor who is new to City Garage. Duncombe praises his comic timing. “He really just plays the man very well, both to this sort of intellectual side and his existential panic side,” Duncome said. “But also his seriousness and sort of unreliability.”CityGarage, which hosted a series of podcasts during the pandemic, has been making a careful and diligent return to live theater since the pandemic. “We’ve been very happy to see people coming back to the theater,” Duncombe said. “We’ve been very diligent in our COVID protocols asking for proof of vaccination and masks. People are increasingly comfortable coming back and so we’d invite them to just come spend a playful day at the beach with us and see if they look, laugh and think a little bit.”

The second person they chose was Perry because, von Hoffmann said, he is a board walk icon and anyone who has been in Venice over the past 45 years has encountered him either riding on his roller blades, roller skates, or now walking around on moon boots and playing his music. “He is just a pinnacle of the fun and funky nature of the melting pot of the boardwalk,” von Hoffmann said. “He has a really interesting story to tell that many folks haven’t heard because they just know him as a character. They’ve never found out about the person who has been living this unique existence all along.” Not everything will be a history lesson though. One short film features two minutes of Venice dog owners talking about their impressions of Venice—in the voices of their dogs. A group of students aged 10 to 13 created a film of them dancing in Venice. There will be clips from a beauty contest in the 30s and others with kids attending summer school with sand on their school desks. “There is a broad spectrum of diversity from time, place and people,” Murphy said. “We’re definitely trying to share all the voices of Venice. There are a couple of teenage documenta ries done as a 20-minute history of Venice with some great interviews from various diverse voices. There’s a smaller teenage piece about Black surfers in Venice and the history of Black surfers in Venice, Ocean Park and Santa Monica.”

Another film, “Goldie Glitters,” shares the story of a man who was a banker by day and a drag artist at night. He performed in his own free theater on the boardwalk in the 1970s.“Hewas a beloved member of the community who was known to help out elderly folks that needed a grocery run or help getting medication,” von Hoffmann said. Goldie decided to run for Homecoming Queen at Santa Monica College, which created a huge scandal, especially when he won. The crowning was supposed to happen at a Harry Perry, a boardwalk musician and icon, is among the local characters who will be featured during Venice Heritage Museum's 2022 Film Festival on Aug. 13.

Fascinating Films Venice Heritage Museum’s 2022 festival lauds the city’s hodgepodge of history and culture

By Bridgette M. Redman V enice Heritage Museum will be celebrating the things that make Venice special with an evening under the stars—a night of short films all about the people and stories of Venice. The party gets started out doors at Vice Media at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13 and will last for three hours. The family event will include concessions and short films that celebrate Venice’s historic, artistic and cultural legacy. The films come from a variety of sources. Some were created as part of the Venice Heritage Museum’s Oral History Project. Others were shared by Venice Arts, UCLA Film & Television Archive, the Venice Institute of Contemporary Art, and Herman Paramount Pathe News. Tickets are $20 and kids 12 and under are free. What inspired the museum to offer this medley of films celebrating the culture and heritage of Venice? “Venice is a creative bastion right in Los Angeles,” said Kristina von Hoffmann, the museum’s board president. “It is a place where so many cultural movements have sprung forth across art, music, politics, design and architec ture. Film is one of those categories. It was always a natural fit to launch a film festival, an evening of short films that celebrated Venice’s cultural heritage.” With all the partners they collaborate with, von Hoffmann said they were able to get access to a really diverse and dynamic group of films that showcase the diversity of movements that have come out of Venice and the people who make up the heart of what Venice is. Board member Michael Murphy said that they were able to pull together a little bit of everything, from films made by kids to history projects to rare footage. His job has been to choose from the wide range of content they had available what should be shown on Saturday night. “It’s a celebration of heri tage,” Murphy said. “We pulled content from the 30s, from the 60s and content from today. I would say it’s almost an 80 or 90-year spectrum of VeniceVeniceheritage.”Heritage Museum launched its oral history project this past April and they have so far collected and recorded 32 stories. They work with a pro bono film company called Why Not Coco? From those 32, they chose two to feature at this first film festival: Joan Huff, a descen dent of one of the first Black families of Venice; and Harry Perry, a boardwalk musician andHuff’sicon.story takes viewers back to the early days of Venice. She is a direct descen dent of Irving Tabor, whose cousin Arthur Reese convinced him to come West, to a place that was more tolerant and accepting of people of color than many other places in the U.S. in the Jim Crow era of the earlyTabor1900s.hada chance encounter with Abbot Kinney one day on the Venice Pier. Kinney asked if he was able to drive. Even though he had never done so, he claimed to be a great driver and quickly learned how to drive. He became Kinney’s chauffer and righthand man and confidante. “They developed a close relationship,” von Hoffmann said. “Irving Tabor and his next of kin helped develop the community of Oakwood in Venice. Tabor has his own cultural legacy and his descen dants include Joan Huff, and her son Robert will be speak ing at the event as well. She has her own really interesting and unique stories to tell about being part of this multi-genera tional family in Venice and growing up in this place that is really the most diverse com munity of its kind on the coast of California and in the country. There’s a story that could be told nowhere else that Joan has to share.”

PAGE 18 THE ARGONAUT AUGUST 11, 2022

Joan Huff, descendent Tabor, bottom and football game and the football players were threatening to beat Goldie up. As soon as the announcement was made, Goldie was whisked away to a friend’s apartment. “He’s a really special charac ter,” von Hoffmann said. “A tough person, tough personal ity, but a really resilient character and a member of the queer community at a time when people were still ostra cized and seeking to gain acceptance.”

The film festival will start with the most family-friendly films to accommodate those with young children. It will offer popcorn, candy and empanadas. The latter will come from the Empanada Factory, which is going to donate 25% of all its proceeds to Venice Heritage Museum. In addition to the films, the museum will feature an exhibition that people can walk through focusing on Venice’s film heritage. “It’s spanning the decades from the early days of Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin, all the way to the most recent film that has been getting some buzz around Venice, which is the live-action Barbie movie with Ryan Gosling,” von Hoffmann said. She hopes people will come and stay for the whole night while seeing the exhibit in the breaks tucked between the films. “Everything is worth seeing and it is going to be exciting with different elements of Venice’s history and culture,” von Hoffmann said. “So, we hope folks enjoy the whole event.”BothMurphy and von Hoffmann said the plan is for this film festival to be the first of an annual event. There is, they say, a boundless amount of content and their oral history project is just under way.“People should come to the event to celebrate Venice Heritage and its diverse stories,” Murphy said. “The more we understand where we come from, the more we understand what we can do together.”

There’s a certain kind of satisfaction that can be achieved from looking at photos of homes before and after they’ve been redecorated and revamped. It’s like getting to quietly cheer for the lucky homeowner from the comforts of the other side of the screen as you gawk at each well-lit and expertly-composed photo. You watch the drear and drab of an old, dark living room transform into high ceilings, sleek and smooth lines, and floor-to-ceiling windows; you marvel as the tiredness of a damp tiled kitchen transforms into the freshness of modern textures and contemporary countertops. You may even scratch your head at the possibility of the fact that plants indoors (when they should’ve been outdoors) just works so well. And somehow, you start thinking, “How can I get that kind of home?”

The combination of alluring simplicity, classic and timeless furniture pieces, ingenious indoor-outdoorelement integration, and the overall sleek and modern freshness that we love so much can only be attributed to contemporary home design. The contemporary home design puts more focus on the harmonious feel of the space as a whole, placing heavy importance on comfort and efficiency on top of striking interior design. And while it all sounds simple and straightforward enough to do, here are some rules to go by to successfully incorporate contemporary design into your home. Be Deliberate with Mixing Colour and Texture Begin your revamp by choosing muted color palettes for the larger portions of your house like the floor and ceiling. Neutral shades like black, white, and grey work well for starters. Then purposefully incorporate textural elements and pops of color to give an air of sophistication to your space. For instance, the clean lines and neutral shades of an all-white-walled living room can be broken up by matte black lighting fixtures or a colorful painting. Adding throw pillows of varied complimenting colors and prints, and throw rugs of a variety of textures (fur, microfiber, etc) to otherwise plain colored couches create a cozier and more liveable feel to your space, too. On the flip side, keeping your walls or ceilings bare and exposed can serve as your textured base (as in industrial design), while your contemporary home accessories can be super sleek and smooth in contrast. Go with Minimal Lighting Generally, contemporary home design strongly espouses natural light. Floor to ceiling windows is a defining quality of this design discipline, letting natural light flood in to compliment all the contemporary home accessories present. There aren’t usually any drapes, either, but if you’re more comfortable incorporating curtains, make sure the material is thin, light, and airy, and is in more or less the same color palette as another design element in your space. That being said, don’t be afraid to incorporate one or two striking home lighting pieces, as these can set the tone for the entire theme of your room and can significantly liven up space.

“Welcome to the ideal beachside home with 360° views from the crow's nest to a spa-like swimming pool in a lush & private backyard,” says agent Jesse Weinberg. “On floor one, you'll find a large living room/flex space w/sweeping views & wet bar flowing to a full bath, guest bd or office, & owner's suite with large patio connecting to the pool. Upstairs, discover a kitchen with new KitchenAid double ovens, a full bath, & 3 spacious bedrooms, two w/private patios. Solar heats the gorgeous pool. Newly painted with meticulous landscaping, the exterior of the home is in pristine condition. First time on the market in 40 years, this truly special home has been lovingly maintained & is ready for your new memories.”

Home design inspiration is a dime a dozen in the whimsical world of the internet, so one bonus piece of advice – and this may be the best one out of all of them, to be honest – is to take the rules you’ve learned here and go out there and decorate! Get your hands dirty with familiarizing yourself with shades, textures, fixtures, furnishings, and everything in between, because only then can you apply these rules on contemporary home design, and maybe even bend and break them for a truly contemporary masterpiece right in your own living space.

Maximize the use of shared space, not just horizontally but vertically as well. Open floor plans are another defining quality of contemporary home design, so keeping that in mind can help you arrange your contemporary home accessories better too! Open spaces not only make it more efficient to move around, but it can encourage more interaction between housemates and guests, too. If your space is small, to begin with, create the illusion of negative space with simple, gold or chrome-trimmed wide, long, or round mirrors flush against your walls. If your space is more on the tall side than wide, making use of unusual but stylish home lighting pieces will round off your space nicely. Be Flexible At the heart of it all, contemporary home design is meant to be changed around, just as the tastes and whims of the people living in the space do. So keep your space ‘moveable’ and liveable, as you never know when you’ll feel the need to add in another painting or throw pillow or change the colour (or texture) of your walls. It all boils down to striking the perfect balance of clean and quirky and finding the perfect combination of styles that suit your exact taste. That’s the beauty of contemporary home design – it will always adhere to what your style is.

It’s time to choose contemporary home accessories. Handpicking your furnishings can sometimes be the best part of redecorating, but it can also get overwhelming fast. To make sure everything you pick outstays harmonious with your space’s base, go for sleek furniture pieces with rounded edges and complementing colors to neutralize and strong and clean lines already present back home. Iconic pieces with pops of color or texture fit in nicely into all-brown or all-white spaces, and plants give a more liveable feel to your abode. Don’t be afraid to incorporate a centerpiece or two – large paintings or other interesting wall hangings can be a great conversation starter! Incorporate Negative Space
