LA Mayor Editor: I am a strong supporter of Karen Bass for mayor of LA. She has good experience of working with other government organizations to get things done…this is important. And she knows what can be done with her leadership! With pleasure I have had her signs on my front yard here in
Mar Vista; with displeasure they have been taken several times, and replacements also. Along with the signs for Erin Darling for council. Also other homes in the neighborhood. Why? What good is it? This is not the way elections should be held! Anne Goldfarb Mar Vista Venice Assault Editor: Short story: I was born, raised and educated here for 30 years. 67 years old. Beaten for the first time this past Sunday in Venice by a homeless kid, who police (when they arrived 30 minutes later) said they knew and had "arrested half a dozen times." Gascon, Garcetti, Bonin— you’re all doing a hell of a job in Venice and surrounding areas. Again, "half a dozen times"... You're right, open the cells and let them all out. By the way, four women visiting from Minnesota stayed with me while I waited for the LAPD. They said they had been assaulted trying to use a public restroom nearby. They said they would never return to LA.
Again, great job guys, especially Councilman Bonin. I'm sure businesses paying $6,000 leases a month hoping for tourist dollars share your love of the violent and mentally disturbed. An addendum: I asked for help from the fortuneteller nearby. She screamed, "Get the hell out of here!" Ditto for the folks representing the Bible and Jesus on the other side of the helpful fortuneteller. They said to "get away" because they didn't "want to get involved." Pretty sure that was what Jesus had in mind with the Good Samaritan parable. Mike, l really wish you could have been in my shoes on Sunday, literally. I know you'll make the East Coast just as safe and livable as you've made things here, unless you run for re-election here...again. Tony Lynn Pacific Palisades Preserving Trees Editor: This letter is about preserving trees which, thank God, do so many things for us. Briefly, they absorb carbon dioxide, which is the major
cause of climate change, produce oxygen, buffer sound, cool the air and add to beauty. They could make the difference on what the Earth will be like for our children and grandchildren in the not at all distant future. We are already in the era of climate change with hard to control fires, drought, hurricanes and just plain too hot summers for all life. This brings up our HOAs. Our villas each have a board. I suggest that the boards not remain unaccountable on environmental issues. Before cutting trees, especially the two beautiful 100-foot pines at my villa, Villa Napoli, it should require such decisions be made in agreement with a small number of truly qualified professionals with no connections to those who make money off of cutting trees. Is this so hard to understand? You would think the “crazy” weather the entire world is experiencing would make people alarmed. I'm deeply worried for all generations after mine. Missing Campaign Signs Editor: Once again this morning we awoke to find another political sign missing. It must be four or five by now. The opponents do not report their signs being stolen. The implication of a lack of ethics by one side in the CD 11 race cannot be overlooked. Traci Parks was key in the smear campaign (which used signs extensively) against council member Bonin and now signs appear to be a big issue again. Speech Therapy and Community Support American Institute for Stuttering opens location in Santa Monica By Jeff Croff ccording to the National Institute of Health, approximately 3 million people in the United States stutter. For those facing this neurological disorder, treatment and coping mechanisms can be difficult to come by with roughly 150 speech therapists certified to treat it across the country. This year, California residents gained additional resources to address a malady that can isolate and limit opportunities for those suffering from it. On Sept. 30, the American Institute for Stuttering celebrated the grand opening of its offices in Santa Monica. This is the third location for the Institute and its first in the West. When asked why the Institute chose Santa Monica, Gregory Scott, speech-language pathologist and clinic director for the new location, cited the welcoming nature of the city which

is incorporated into treatment. “I give props to Santa Monica for being a famously welcoming city and one of the most walkable places in Los Angeles,” Scott said. “It's a perfect, gentle place to bring our clients who are working on facing their fears.” Part of the Institute's program is to take clients out into the community and encourage them to talk with passersby, business staff and others they encounter throughout Santa Monica. In addition to engaging the community, the Institute offers clients counseling sessions on-site or online. Scott mentioned that these sessions are intended to provide clients with the tools to live with their stuttering-not to mask it. He also noted that often even as clients are finding success in dealing with the disorder, they return to speak with pathologists as a
means of maintaining and gauging their progress. The American Institute for Stuttering offers empowerment for its clients rather than recommending ways to hide the neurological disorder. “For the vast majority of people who stutter, it’s something they were born with,” Scott said. “It’s not a mistake. It’s just how they talk. It’s their natural, authentic voice and there’s nothing wrong with that.” Overcoming the stigma of stuttering and the accompanying reluctance for those suffering from the disorder to engage in social situations is at the heart of treatment at the Institute. Often as people encounter negative reactions to their stuttering out in the community, they withdraw from situations that would require them to talk, which can be detrimental to relationships and career advancement.

ArgonautNews.com “I’ve had clients who, out of sheer desperation, legally changed their names to something easier to say,” Scott said. “Of course, because stuttering is a neurological condition, they end up stuttering on their new name, which leads to shame, embarrassment and frustration.” To combat the isolating effects of stuttering, the Institute also promotes a variety of ways for its clients to meet and engage with others dealing with the disorder. From online meet-ups to a speaker series which brings experts to talk about the latest research, the Institute tries to demystify stuttering and help its clients find coping mechanisms. Clients are often paired with mentors who have found success in the program and/or might have similar career or social challenges. The American Institute for Stuttering’s mission is to “provide universally affordable treatment to persons of all ages.” It also seeks to educate colleagues on the proper methodologies to treat and
address stuttering, another thrust of the Institute addressing the inclusivity issue and removing the stigma surrounding stuttering. Scott notes that while treatment can benefit all, it’s best to address stuttering as soon as it is identified. “As children begin stringing together multiple words is when stuttering can emerge,” Scott said. “80% of toddlers who stutter will grow out of it. 20% will persist into adulthood. We recommend parents seek out treatment early on.” As it assists clients in gaining confidence and removing the stigma, the Institute also guides its clients in effective communication, all changes that will allow greater engagement for patients as they stroll through Santa Monica and are welcomed. Recent Controversy
Antisemitic flyers and banners appear in LA By Morgan Owen emonstrators hung banners across an overpass on the 405 freeway near Culver City on Saturday, Oct. 23 in support of recent antisemitic comments made by rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. The controversy began on Oct. 7, when Ye posted a text conversation to Instagram with a racially charged statement about the Jewish community. After Instagram suspended his account and removed the post, Ye took to Twitter to respond to the suspension. The tweet, which has been removed, allegedly read: “I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 – On JEWISH PEOPLE – The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also – You guys have toyed with me and tired to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.”
D
Two of the banners hung on the 405 overpass appeared to show support for Ye’s antisemitic comments, saying, “Kanye is right about the Jews,” and, “Honk if you know.” Images of the incident also show demonstrators making Nazi salutes. A third banner attributes the demonstration to the Goyim Defense League, which according to the Anti-Defamation League is responsible for at least 74 antisemitic propaganda incidents in 2021. “Goyim” is a pejorative Yiddish and Hebrew word for someone who is not Jewish. Further controversy ensued in the Beverly Hills area after images of antisemitic flyer packets were redistributed over the weekend of Oct. 22. The flyers display images of Disney executives with the star of David stamped on their forehead and identify high-ranking officials in the CDC and Biden
administration as allegedly Jewish. Published reports indicate that both the Beverly Hills and Los Angeles Police Departments are investigating the antisemitic flyers.
Fallout for Ye A day before the demonstration on the 405 freeway, Ye became more explicit with his anti-semitic statements in a video where he says, “The thing about it being Adidas is I can literally say anti-semitic s*** and they can’t drop me. I can say anti-semitic things and Adidas can’t drop me. Now what?” Combined with pressure resulting from the demonstrations on the 405 freeway, Ye’s remarks about redoubled public pressure on Adidas to terminate their relationship with him. On Oct. 25, the company announced it would cut ties with

the rapper, a decision that is expected to cost them $246 million. Balenciaga and JPMorgan Chase had already terminated business dealings with Ye. Published reports also indicate the Hollywood talent agency CAA has also ended its relationship with Ye, following Goyim Defense League’s demonstration.
Anti-semitism in Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti responded to the incident on the 405 freeway, saying, “LA is a city of belonging, not hate. We condemn this weekend’s antisemitic incidents. Jewish Angelenos should always feel safe. There is no place for discrimination or prejudice in Los Angeles. And we will never back down from the fight to expose and eliminate it.” Several candidates running in the November municipal election, including Karen Bass, also condemned the demonstration. “This is the exact type of hate that I will not tolerate as mayor.
We will aggressively root out anti-Semitism. It has no place in our city and never will,” Bass tweeted. Bass’s and Garcetti’s comments follow the recent controversy over a leaked audio recording of former LA City Council President, Nury Martinez, making a broad range of racially charged statements. In the recording, Martinez also expressed anti-semitic sentiments, reportedly saying, “Judios (Jews), cut their deal with South LA.” Following the incident on the 405, Jewish leaders have called again for Councilmembers Cedillo and De Leon, who took part in the conversation, to resign immediately. Antisemitism in LA is at an all-time high, according to the Anti-Defamation League. ADL’s Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents indicate that demonstrations of hate for the Jewish community in LA rose 217% from 2017 to 2021, totaling 182 incidents in 2021. Of the 15 antisemitic assaults reported in California, 14 of them took place in LA.

Fire Along Venice Canals Started by Homeless Local couple's home destroyed in recent blaze By Morgan Owen rma Hawkins stood outside her burned home in distraught anger as she and her husband, Marty Kasindorf, recounted the events of the fire that destroyed their home and damaged others along Carroll Canal on Oct. 4. The two were already in bed when they noticed strange lights from outside; they hadn’t heard shouts coming from the street to evacuate. As Kasindorf went to their living room to investigate, the glass in their windows exploded, and he saw the entire side of their home in flames. Kasindorf and Hawkins rushed outside, leaving their shoes behind and taking only their family dog and a phone that was nearby. Kasindorf said that luckily their ginger cat managed to escape on his own, but they didn’t find out he was alive until the following morning. The two had lived in that house for 24 years. According to neighbor Glenn Searle, the fire was started in the house neighboring Kasindorf and Hawkins by a group of homeless people who squatted in the unoccupied building. After the fire began, Hawkins and Kasindorf said Searle saw several people running away from the building. The home under renovation was reportedly a popular spot for homeless individuals to gather and use a portable toilet stationed there for construction workers during the day. It was half an hour before any fire crews arrived to extinguish the fire and even longer before they located the nearby fire

alleyway. They do a great job, but the neighbors have absolute fatigue because you tell them [they can’t] camp there, and they stay.” Kasindorf added that the police do nothing because their hands are tied. Venice Community Housing has several new developments moving forward to create more affordable housing, but the existence of housing doesn’t immediately take people off the streets. Bonin, the city council member for District 11, was successful in stemming the rise in homelessness in many other areas on the Westside, including Mar Vista, Del Rey, West LA
and Brentwood, but Venice has remained largely unchanged throughout his tenure. Bonin is not up for reelection in November’s municipal elections, but the homeless issue is still a critical campaign point in the LA mayoral race. For Kasindorf, the fire has changed his voting preferences. He says he changed his mind to vote for Caruso in the upcoming mayoral election because Caruso promises to come down harder on the homeless. The surrounding neighborhood has several campaign signs for Caruso, indicating this may be a popular stance for Venice residents.
Martin Kasindorf recounts the events of the Oct. 4 fire that burned his home. hydrants. “I was terribly anxious to save the house, but I saw it was absolutely hopeless,” Kasindorf said. Perhaps if firefighters had arrived sooner, the outcome would have been different, lamented Hawkins. The reason firefighters took so long, they said, was because local departments were already deployed to two other homeless encampment fires. This fire exemplifies the struggle with homelessness in Venice. “The homeless issue is so out of control that it almost killed us,” Kasindorf said. Hawkins didn’t mince words when she said she doesn’t want
to rebuild the house without assurance that local homeless residents are removed from the area. Homelessness in Venice has been steadily increasing in the last decade. According to the LA Alliance for Human Rights, Venice accounts for 5% of land in LA, but is host to 49% of the homeless population in City Council District 11. In 2019, the number of homeless people residing in Venice increased from 175 in 2014 to 1,200. In 2020, that number again increased to 1,685 people. “The last several years have been hell,” Hawkins said. “We pay $50 a month for neighborhood security that…chases them out and also tries to monitor the

Modern Ayurvedic Expert Surya’s Martha Soffer curates customized journeys for optimal wellness PHOTOS BY CHRIS MORTENSON
Internationally acclaimed Ayurvedic doctor, chef and herbalist, Martha Soffer, is the owner of Surya, an artisan Ayurvedic spa at Santa Monica Proper Hotel. PAGE 12 THE ARGONAUT NOVEMBER 3, 2022
By Kamala Kirk artha Soffer’s interest in wellness was inspired by her grandmother, who owned a large farm in her native Colombia. Growing up, Soffer watched her utilize the herbs and flowers that grew there to treat various health conditions. “My grandmother had a huge garden with roses and different types of herbs, and she would mix ingredients from her garden to treat her arthritis pain,” Soffer said. “Anytime I got sick or was suffering from some type of ailment, she taught me what herbs to treat it with so I learned a lot about natural healing at a young age.” Soffer was also introduced by a friend to Transcendental Meditation, a form of silent mantra meditation that helps decrease stress and anxiety, in addition to improving one’s health. The experience, Soffer said, ultimately changed her life. She later moved to the United States to study English and computer science at Maharishi International University in Iowa, which features a consciousness-based education system that includes the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique. One day on campus, Soffer noticed a woman with glowing skin and fragrant oil in her hair, which piqued her curiosity. “I was fascinated by the incredible smell and asked her what it was,” Soffer said. “I learned that she was participating in a Panchakarma series, which is the Ayurvedic process of detoxifying and purifying the body for several days. She referred me to the campus Ayurvedic center and as soon as I walked in, I loved it. I applied to the program and began my study of Ayurveda.” Soffer learned about plants, diet and the human connection to nature, which resonated with many of her grandmother’s teachings. After completing the program she came to Los Angeles in 2000 for six weeks to teach a course, and it was

ArgonautNews.com during that time that she met her husband, Roger, which prompted her to relocate to LA. The following year Soffer opened Surya, which at the time was a one-room clinic out of her home. It began to draw national attention and was written up by the LA Times, eventually expanding to a bigger location when Soffer moved to a house in the Pacific Palisades. 20 years later, the owners of Santa Monica Proper Hotel were looking to add a spa. They met Soffer and fell in love with her treatments, and she spent the next year and a half working with renowned designer, Kelly Wearstler, to create the ultimate wellness sanctuary. Surya opened its doors at Santa Monica Proper Hotel in April 2021. The stunning 3,000 square-foot space is tranquil and welcoming with a palette of soft, warm colors, along with marble, wood and stone mediums. It includes a meditation den, community room where guests can enjoy meals between services, and beautiful private treatment rooms with en-suite bathrooms and soaking tubs. “Kelly and I shared ideas with each other and it became this beautiful place,” Soffer said. “It’s been amazing since we’ve been here.” At Surya, Soffer presents a modernized version of Ayurveda to her clients through an extensive menu of offerings, which include luxurious spa therapies such as Abhyanga (a massage where two practitioners work together in synchronized movements) and Shirodhara (warm herbal oil is poured on the forehead for ultimate relaxation), Ayurvedic cooking classes, one-year programs and professional certifications for every level of interest, personal consultations with Soffer, and Panchakarma—a series of immersive and restorative therapies that last anywhere from three to 28 days. A traditional Hindu healing and medicinal practice, Ayurveda was developed by Southern Indian yogis over 10,000 years ago. It incorporates herbs, meditation, diet, yoga, massage and other methods to help cleanse the body while restoring balance to one’s mind, body and spirit. According to Soffer, people

about a person’s health, what they are going through and where they need to be balanced.” At Surya, guests are greeted by a custom oil blend bar in the reception area, along with beautiful walls lined with powerfully healing skin and self-care products ranging from bath soaks and body oils to lip salves that Soffer makes by hand. Among her standout products is the Balancing Collagen Cream, which contains 46 healing botanicals, 13 nourishing oils, 14 essential oils, and a proprietary blend of collagens and milks to moisturize and repair skin while reducing fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and unwanted marks. “The cream is really nourishing and it comes from a recipe that my entire family has used,” Soffer said. “All of my aunts in Colombia are in their seventies and they have such amazing skin. I made the cream with my grandmother’s recipe
combined with all of my knowledge. It’s very rejuvenating for skin.” During their visit, guests are also served a slice of freshly baked almond banana walnut bread with ghee. The bread is grain-free and paleo, and is baked with Ayurvedic herbs and spices. It is available for sale by the loaf and comes in other flavors such as apple date, vegan apple, and gingered peach and turmeric. For those that can’t make it to the spa in person, all of Soffer’s products including the bread can be purchased on Surya's website. “The bread is delicious and high in protein,” Soffer said. “I’m working on a new flavor right now along with more products. I’m also developing some products for a project with several companies that I can’t share just yet. We are planning to offer more retreats in the future, including one in Kauai in January, so I’ve been learning about Hawaiian
culture, herbs and traditional Lomi Lomi massage to incorporate into the treatments and experiences I’m developing for the retreat.” Soffer also plans to offer more mini-retreats and experiences like yoga classes and sound baths at Santa Monica Proper Hotel so that more local residents will be able to experience some of the magic of Surya. “I love being in Santa Monica,” Soffer said. “I love the farmers markets and being so close to the ocean. The air here is cleaner and everything works so well together in harmony. It truly is an amazing place.”

Showcasing Operatic Greats Concert focuses on two classical giants

Artistic director Anne Marie Ketchum has devised a special program to highlight the Verdi Chorus’ talents and bring the lush world of Italian art songs, as well as Neapolitan favorites, to audiences on Nov. 12 and 13 at First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica. By Bridgette M. Redman fter a year of challenges and heartbreak, AnneMarie Ketchum, who has been the artistic director of Verdi Chorus for the past 39 years, wanted to pick music for the fall concert that would make her happy. “I always say that one of the really nice things about being in charge is that I can pick all the music that I love, that I really want to work on my soul, not just whatever’s going to make an audience come,” Ketchum said. It’s why the Nov. 12 and 13 concerts at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica will feature the works of two composers, digging deep into what each of them can do. “A Verdi Puccini Fest” will feature selections from 10 operas, the first half digging into four of Verdi’s operas and the second half showcasing six of Puccini’s works. It will bring in three guest soloists that Ketchum and the Chorus have worked with many times over the years: Jamie
A
Chamberlin Granner, soprano; Nathan Granner, tenor; and Ben Lowe, baritone. The concert will also feature the Fox Singers, 16 young professionals hired as section leaders and rehearsal coaches. They will perform alongside the guest soloists and the chorus, with most of them singing solos at some point during the evening. Since its birth at an Italian restaurant named after Verdi, the Verdi Chorus has focused on the music written for opera choruses. While they do have soloists, the repertoire is selected from the most dramatic choral numbers in classical opera. While this concert devotes half the evening to Verdi, Ketchum said that nearly all of their concerts contain at least one piece by Verdi, the Italian composer best known for his operas. “There are really good reasons for that,” Ketchum said. “The reason we were named for Verdi is because of the way he treats the chorus in his operas.
PAGE 14 THE ARGONAUT NOVEMBER 3, 2022
Verdi treated them as kind of a character. They’re treated as part of the action. He uses the chorus a great deal. Many other composers will just take a moment to have the chorus respond to something the main characters are doing. With Verdi, he writes full-out pieces for the chorus alone. There’s so much to choose from in almost everything he wrote. Most of them are just loaded with wonderful pieces that stand alone as great pieces of art.” The second half of the concert is devoted to Puccini, whom Ketchum describes as being known for his dramatic orchestral writing and his striking use of colors and rhythm in a rich theatrical style. “They are truly deserving of being referred to as two of the greatest opera composers that ever lived,” Ketchum said. “Verdi wrote for the chorus as an actual character and force in what the leading characters were saying and doing, and Puccini wrote musical tones and hues for the chorus to illustrate more deeply the story
being told.” Ketchum said there were a couple of pieces from Puccini that the chorus hadn’t done for a while and she wanted to dig back into them. She also built the program around her soloists and the pieces that they wanted to do. Having been involved in the music community her entire life, Ketchum has had the opportunity to befriend many wonderful singers. “This particular time, we’re just coming off the pandemic and I am coming off a really horrendous year in which I lost my husband,” Ketchum said. “I just felt like I wanted to bring in some people that I love and who are outstanding and wonderful performers.” She described how several years ago, the current guest soprano and tenor were performing at one of the concerts. At the end of the last matinee, Nathan Granner proposed to Jamie (then Chamberlin) Granner. “She said yes in front of our audience and then proceeded to
sing a whole lot of high Cs,” Ketchum said. “It was just a totally joyful time. So, they’re favorites of mine. I just love them dearly and they are outstanding, wonderful, fun, beautiful, talented, artistic deep thinkers—wonderful people. So, in looking at all this repertoire, I was looking at what I could do that would showcase their special talents. Some of the music was planned specifically for them.” She then knew she needed a good baritone that could balance out the others, someone with a big, tight voice that could handle the large, dramatic pieces. She turned to Lowe because not only can he handle all of that, but because he was present at the previous concert where the Granners got engaged. The Verdi operas which they will perform selections from include I Lombardi, Don Carlo, Rigoletto and La Traviata. The opening chorus is “O signore dal tetto natio,” which Ketchum said is famous in Italy—one that school children learn as

Anne Marie Ketchum has been the artistic director of Verdi Chorus for the past 39 years. they are growing up. “It’s just a really beautiful piece and it has a lot of unison and then it goes into open beautiful chorus, harmonies and rhythms,” Ketchum said. “I love conducting it. I love listening to it. I love singing it.” Other choices she made include a friendship aria from Don Carlo that features the talents of the tenor and baritone—known as a friendship duet, a heart-wrenching aria that Lowe will sing about the abduction of his daughter, a drinking song and a big soprano aria. The Puccini pieces are what Ketchum describes as a musical and spiritual trip around the world with the Asian influences of Turandot, the Western sounds of La Fanciulla del West, the Parisian ambiance of La Rondine, and the religiosity of Suor Angelica. There will also be selections from La Boheme and Tosca. “What’s really fun about this collection of Puccini is that he has such a way of telling a story through the colors and the sounds of the music,” Ketchum said. “All these pieces are very obviously Puccini, but you really hear the differences.
When you’re listening to this big scene from Turandot, it’s very reminiscent of the Chinese colors and sounds. You hear in it the modal quality and the strength of it. Then there’s this wonderful sort of French, early sweetness kind of thing and in Suor Angelica, the beautiful religiosity of the nuns.” She talks about the fun of Puccini, an Italian composer, writing a Western musical with La Fanciulla del West, which has all the sounds of a Western. She’s selected a song from early in the opera that the Men’s Chorus will perform. They’re all in a saloon and singing about the things they miss—their mom, their home, their dog. The climax of the concert will be a piece from La Rondine, “Bevo al tuo fresco sorriso.” “It means, ‘I drink of your fresh smile,’” Ketchum said. “It starts out with the soprano and tenor—our Jamie and Nathan who fell in love and got engaged on our stage—singing to each other. Then another duet comes in. It’s a quartet of two couples. Then the full chorus joins in and it’s all about love and springtime and warmth. It’s a real feel-good
kind of thing, which I always like to end with.” “A Verdi Puccini Fest” closes out their 39th season as they prepare to celebrate their four decades of history next year. In 40 years, Ketchum has never missed a concert and loves bringing the Verdi Chorus’ special focus to audiences in Santa Monica. “What’s interesting about this organization is that you go to an opera and most people come away thinking about the aria, duet and the big finale, but often people don’t remember or think about the chorus music, and there’s so much wonderful music,” Ketchum said. “This is an opportunity for us to focus on another part of opera that is not always recognized, but really deserves to be because there’s so much great music.”

‘Sing’ Along
Travis fetes its landmark album ‘The Invisible Band’ By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski ravis vocalist/guitarist Fran Healy is sitting outside of an LA rockclimbing gym, apologizing for his casual look. Hailing from Scotland, Healy now lives on the Westside, and is looking forward to playing a rare LA show at The Theatre at Ace Hotel on Saturday, Nov. 5. The quartet will perform its No. 1 album, “The Invisible Band,” in full along with its hits and fan favorites. The dates were scheduled for last year, but the jaunt was canceled when Healy injured his hand rescuing a dog in a multicar crash outside of his home. “This show is beautiful,” Healy said. “The stage set is lovely. There are two very distinct shows. One is ‘The Invisible Band’ show where we play that record. In America, that album was a little island for people to crawl into to swim away from the likes of Fred Durst and Britney Spears back in 2001. “Following that record, things changed, and alternative music definitely took a turn for the better. People still come up to me in America and say they love that record.” Healy said fans won’t expect Travis to “do a Bob Dylan” and play revised versions of the songs. “You’re going to feel like we just walked into your living room and you put the needle on the record,” he said with a smile. “We turn up and play it for you. The good thing is we’ve played it so many times now. This is maybe the 30th show of this particular thing. We’re playing brilliant and it’s good fun.” The tour coincides with Craft Recordings’ reissue of “The Invisible Band,” which includes the songs “Sing,” “Side” and “Flowers in the Window.” With “The Invisible Band,” which was recorded at Ocean Way Studios in LA with co-producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead), Travis received critical acclaim for melding rock and pop, appealing to indie and mainstream audiences. They climbed the Billboard Top 40 chart, while gaining outspoken fans that range from Oasis to Elton John and paved the way for acts like Coldplay and Keane. The album was released in

2001, with a world tour that followed. Looking back, Healy said he wouldn’t change a thing about the record — just the times. “I would have changed 9/11, which happened right as we released the album,” he said. “Everyone knows where they were on 9/11. I was in Norway when it happened. I remember our website had a message board. We were very communicative with our fans at the time — and still are. I remember asking people in New York — because we had a show booked at Radio City Music Hall — if we should come. “And everyone said, ‘God, yeah.’ Nobody was flying. Everyone was on the ground. Our families were like, ‘Don’t, don’t, please don’t go. But we went. What happened was one of the most memorable shows I think we ever had. I remember coming off stage and I broke down, crying my eyes out.” “The Invisible Band,” Healy said, stands the test of time. He generally doesn’t listen to his own music, but it feels deep. With every song on the album, Healy said he was “trying to figure out something.” These days, he’s trying to wrap his head around the world’s problems. “It’s a really weird time,” he said. “I think your homeless problem is just unbelievable. I’ve actually been carjacked. I’ve been assaulted—all by homeless people. I mean, I’m sort of asking for it. My studio is on the border of Skid Row. But it’s not the homeless person’s problem. It’s a government problem. This country is one of the richest in the world. They should look after people, and they don’t because people are just greedy. It’s ridiculous. “In the meantime, we’re just going to have to hang tight. I think America is going through its own adolescence right now. It’s having its own teenage hormonal problems.” Travis w/Ben Ottewell of Gomez WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 WHERE: The Theatre at Ace Hotel, 929 S. Patterns and Power
Artist’s Santa Monica show surveys a lifetime of feminist sensibility By Bridgette M. Redman ince 1977, Linda Smith has been making art in Los Angeles, and an extensive survey of her work opened on Oct. 15 at bG Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. It was in the 1970s that she left New York after earning a filmmaking degree and came to LA—not to make movies, but to make paintings. After two decades of success, she switched her primary medium to ceramics, though she continues to approach the work as a painter. The bG Gallery exhibition, “Pattern and Power,” will juxtapose up to 50 of her paintings and ceramic works and be on display until Nov. 15. Smith says she loves working with that gallery—a place that has supported her work for at least the past eight years. “This is very thrilling to have a solo show,” Smith said. “It’s like a retrospective and it’s great that it is incorporating my paintings.” Active in the women’s movement all her life, Smith found that she was better able to express her ideas through the “single frames” of a painting or sculpture rather than a story. She does work that draws in the viewer and demands that they participate in completing the story suggested by her work. Pointing out that each artist has their own vocabulary and concern, Smith says that hers has always been pattern, color and light. She traces her love for art back to her childhood where growing up in New York her parents would let her go into the city to visit art museums. “I got a lot of fabulous art and it just became a passion,” Smith said. “I’ve always had this love of art history and the importance of it. It gives me meaning in my life. I love prehistoric art too. When I look at it, I just feel so connected. It connects me to humanity.” From history, her art continued to grow out of her everyday experiences, whether it was her interactions with her cat, her dog or her now ex-husband. It incorporated women’s issues and her experiences as a woman.

Artist Linda Smith’s solo show “Pattern and Pattern” presented by bG Gallery at Bergamot Station is a survey exhibition encompassing works from 1980 through the present.
The exhibition features paintings—many not previously shown—serigraphs, mosaics and hand-built ceramic sculptures, including a new series of monumental 6-foot-tall totems.
Her work has been described as a celebration, as an affirmation of the feminine spirit. She said that gender identity has always been a part of her work. Growing up in the 1960s, things were undergoing seismic shifts, especially for women. “The struggle for equality continues today with many groups,” Smith said. “This struggle is part of my work. Often my faces on my totems are androgynous. Identity is masked by patterns and brush strokes and colors.” She said that art has been her saving grace, that instead of a religion, she has art. “When I’m in my studio and working, I put on music and it just transports me to another place,” Smith said. “I get more relaxed and happy. It’s a wonderful relief and then it connects you with other people. I don’t go to the dark side. I am optimistic and joyful. The work is a great way for me to funnel all my stress about the world.” Smith’s commitment to feminism is part of what draws her to exhibit at the bG Gallery. She said she is very supportive of many women artists and has noticed over the years that the
new totems, many of which carry through the themes, patterns and colors of her paintings. “What inspired me was to be more monumental. Even though I need outside help like a fabricator to come in and help me with the steel and base, it’s more exciting. It’s exciting to have big work next to your small work. It’s more dramatic that way.” Her totems feature such things as hats, masks, heads, and animals. Her practice allows her to incorporate a variety of approaches. Sometimes she plans out each totem, sketching it and determining ahead of time what it will look like. “Other times, I just want to be loose and I hand build and don’t know what’s happening,” Smith said. “Sometimes that’s very freeing when you can build and you don’t even know what you’re going to put on it. I look at the shape and then I draw on it.” When she paints the ceramics, she said she’s very concerned with brushstrokes and color and lines and good design. While she is a serious studio artist, she’s also been a part of the artistic pop culture world. In
owner and director, Om Bleicher, loves folk art, outsider art and the work created by women. “His taste is pretty eclectic and he’s wonderful to work with,” Smith said. “He’s fabulous and he’s a good friend. He’s become a friend of this whole group of artists and it’s wonderful to be a part of it, even though we’re doing totally different things. He has the same kind of sensibility that I have. He gets it and he likes a bit of the crazy.” The exhibition will include paintings, many of which are being shown for the first time—serigraphs, mosaics and hand-built ceramic sculptures, including a new series of 6-foot-tall totems build around a steel base and rod. There will also be work by the artists who have influenced her practice in the exhibition. Smith has been making ceramics for decades and her cups and other sculptures have made it into museum exhibitions and shops. However, she found she wanted to do something more important, something she calls more monumental than the small work. “I felt like I needed to do a big statement,” Smith said of her
1988, she made an album cover for “John Prine Live.” Her works were on display in Wolfgang Puck’s original Spago restaurant at the height of its popularity. Her work also filled the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills in 1985 and 1993. While the exhibition at bG Gallery represents a survey of her work, Smith plans to keep creating. “The thrust of my life is that art keeps me sane,” Smith said. “It’s upbeat, positive and connected and I just love it. Going to the museums when I was a kid was always inspiring and exciting. So, here I am, still a kid.” And for a month, she hopes that others will come see her work and experience that same joy and inspiration. THE ARGONAUT REAL ESTATE Q&A
When Is “For Sale By Owner” The Right Option? When you put your home on the market, one of the first decisions you’ll make is whether to hire an agent to represent the property or to go the “for sale by owner” route. While a portion of homeowners initially goes into selling their home on their own, they end up ultimately hiring an agent.
the primary motivators for people to go the FSBO route.
real estate agent doesn’t have that emotional connection so they can be objective.
Along with avoiding the listing commission, there are other benefits of FSBO.
• Real estate agents have access to local listing portals, the MLS, networks, and other agents.
• You’ll have full control over the price at which you list your home.
Some of the big reasons homeowners decide to try and sell their home on their own are because they think it will save them money and time. Some homeowners also feel like they understand their home better than a real estate agent will.
• You can schedule your open houses and showings, so you’re not stuck at the last minute trying to leave the house.
So when is it the right option to try and sell your home on your own without an agent?
• You know not just your home but also your neighborhood best.
The Basics of For Sale By Owner (FSBO)
What Are the Downsides of FSBO?
FSBO means that as a homeowner, you list your home for sale without a real estate agent, making you responsible for the process from start-to-finish. Some of the things you’ll have to do include pricing and listing your home, staging it, negotiating, and closing.
Some of the potential downsides of trying to sell your home on your own, aside from the commission you’ll pay, include:
The standard real estate commission fee is around 6%, and trying to save that is one of
• You’re going to be motivated to get the highest possible amount for your home.
• A real estate agent understands how to properly price a home to sell based on fair market value.• You may be emotionally attached to your home, which can be problematic. You may think your home is worth more than it is, or you might be offended if someone criticizes your home. A
• Some agents won’t show a home that’s FSBO. • Real estate agents understand how to efficiently manage the procedural aspects of selling a home, such as the paperwork. When Does It Make Sense To Sell Your Own Home? In many circumstances, working with an experienced, professional real estate agent is best. There are a few cases where it can make sense to opt for FSBO, however. • If you already have a qualified buyer who’s interested in your home before it goes on the market, you may not need a listing agent. One of the big roles of an agent is marketing, and if you have someone who plans to buy your home, you won’t need an agent’s expertise in that area. It is important to separate interested
buyers from qualified buyers in this case. • Is there a lot of demand in your market? If you’re in a high-growth market and inventory is limited, you may be able to sell your home quickly and for top-dollar without an agent. • Can you take your time? If you’re in no real hurry to sell your house and you can wait, then you might be able to sell it on your own successfully. If you do the research and think FSBO is best for you, remember to price it accordingly, based on market research rather than emotions. Create a listing that’s high-quality with professional photographs and an optimized description. Finally, if you aren’t going to have a real estate agent, you should work with an experienced real estate attorney early on to protect you and help guide you through the process.
