Shown above are renderings of Heritage Marketplace, which will feature Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles as well as Fox Concept’s Zinburger.

Lolo’s, Zinburger Coming to Gilbert Next Summer The Historic Heritage District of Gilbert will see two new restaurants as well as office/retail in the third quarter of 2014, as part of a new $7 million project. According to LGE Design Build President David Sellers, Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles as well as Fox Concept’s popular Zinburger will move into Heritage Marketplace Phase I, which has already broken ground. Phase I consists of 31,000 square feet with the two signature restaurants and a two-story mixeduse office/retail building. “We’re excited to have them part of the project,” Sellers said of Lolo’s. “We’re excited to have Zinburger as part of the project, too. We’ve had a lot of activity from other tenants. “It’s really more of a shell game right now, just trying to figure out where is the best place to fit people in the project and what tenants we want in there and what tenants we don’t want in there. It’s a really unique area and, the thing is, we don’t want to do is make the project, say, too vanilla or anything like that, typical strip center/retail.” Sellers explained he wants to see “really unique tenants.” “That’s why we chose Lolo’s to be in there and that’s why Zinburger’s

going in there,” he added. “In the next 90 days or so, we’ll announce more tenants. There are two to three more restaurants that we’re in negotiations with right now.” Sellers’ firm came across the Gilbert opportunity a couple years ago, around the time that Postino opened. “This little area called The Heritage District started picking up a lot of momentum and a lot of publicity for being a destination dining and entertainment area for the Southeast Valley. “We got in there underneath the radar a little bit, before a lot of people started looking at this area and trying to put new developments in there.” The firm purchased the land less than 30 days ago from the Town of Gilbert, which is building a 400-space parking structure. “We chose the area because it’s got great demographics,” Sellers said. “There’s definitely a demand for unique dining and retail spaces in the Southeast Valley that’s not really met with the current retail environment. That’s why this area has really started to blossom.” Future phases will add more than 50,000 square feet of additional retail, restaurant and office space. December 2013

By Tyler O’Tremba Family owned and farmhouse grown is how Sylvia Hilligardt and her daughter Milli describe their eatery, The Farmhouse Restaurant. Originally set in a farmhouse two miles south of its current location in Gilbert’s Heritage District, the restaurant was a second calling for Sylvia. She began her working career as a nurse. “But I didn’t want to do nursing anymore,” she said. Her parents inspired her to enter into the restaurant business, as they were “big in cooking and it’s something I knew I could do.” With the recession, businesses have struggled to draw customers as well as maintain repeat customers, but Farmhouse Restaurant has thrived. On the weekends there is regularly a 20- to 30-minute wait for a table in the mornings. “I think our repeat customers pulled us through the recession and we also have a business that grows,” she said.

Farmhouse Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch and the menu features many full-sized meals that cost less than $10. Omelets are packed with fresh vegetables, while sandwiches, patty melts and hamburgers are hearty. Repeat customers say they come back for the good food and friendly staff. “It’s like eating at home,” said Dane Stewart, a frequent Farmhouse diner. “They’re always really courteous.” Doug Briggs has had similar experiences. “They’re very friendly, genuine and considerate,” Briggs said. “It’s always very good service, and the price is good for the amount of food you get.” The Farmhouse Restaurant is located at 228 N. Gilbert Rd., Gilbert. Hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call (480) 926-0676 or visit www.farmhouseofgilbert.com.

When Lexi Ermeling saw “The Nutcracker” for the first time, she dreamed of becoming a part of the production. “I thought, ‘How cool would it be to be behind the scenes and be a part of the whole thing,’” she recalled. “Once I saw it, I knew it’s what I wanted to do.” Lexi, the daughter of Ryan and Lyndsay Ermeling, is one of two dancers chosen to play the lead of Clara Lexi Ermeling in the 27th anniversary presentation of Ballet Etudes’ “The Nutcracker” held in Chandler and Mesa after the Thanksgiving holiday. The cast boasts 115 girls from throughout the Valley, including fellow Clara—Helen Porter, a 14-year-old Mesa resident. “I love this performance because it not only gives you a chance to become a better performer, it gives you a chance to act in it,” said the seventh-grade student at Gilbert’s Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran School. Lexi began her dancing career six years ago after her parents enrolled her in classes and she fell in love with the art form. This year marks her sixth year in “The Nutcracker.” In years past, her roles have included a Gingerette, Party Girl, Russian and Junior Snow, Bonbon and Baby Doll.

This year she shares the role of Clara, a job she explains is every girl’s dream. She is also a senior flower. “It’s such a neat opportunity to be a role model,” Lexi says. “Every little girl wants to become Clara. You get to dance the whole show and see everything from an onstage presence.” Lexi was initially intrigued by the costumes of “The Nutcracker.” The most magical part of the performance, she says, is when Clara shrinks and the house becomes bigger and reveals the gigantic rats. Two Arizona State University Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication students, Max Kraust and Tyler O’Tremba, wrote pieces for us this month as part of their class requirements. Max, a junior who grew up in the Chandler-Gilbert area, penned an article about the Gilbert Historical Museum. Meanwhile, Colorado native Tyler spoke to The Farmhouse Restaurant about its recipe for success. How did you all do during your Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping this year? We wound up with a $150, 70-inch television and five new iPads! (Just kidding. We stayed home and ate more cheesecake.) After making its mark as one of the first homebuilders to open models at The Bridges in Gilbert, Shea Homes Arizona has opened the gates to its second community, Retreat. Pricing starts at $239,000. Committed to Excellence By Alison Stanton

Since Gilbert’s new Fire Chief Jim Jobusch was a young boy growing up in Iowa, he knew he wanted to be a firefighter. “My dad volunteered as a firefighter, and I spent a lot of time at the fire station with him, so it definitely had an influence on me as a small child,” he said. During the past twoplus decades, Jobusch has had the chance to fulfill his dream. In December 1992, Jobusch was hired as one of the first two captains for the municipal department, which officially began service in January 1993. He was also one of the Jim Jobusch founding members of the Gilbert Fire Department, helping the town to take over the fire department from Rural Metro. “I started as a captain, and then also worked as a battalion chief and then

I have also been either assistant or interim chief,” Jobusch said. On Aug. 15, Jobusch was confirmed as Gilbert’s new fire chief by the town’s council. He is the third person to have this role in the municipal department and the first Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department employee to be promoted to the position. “I didn’t start out my career wanting to become a fire chief, but once I got started, I knew it was where I wanted to be,” Jobusch said. By Tracy House When Tisha Marie Pelletier founded Mom-e Clubs, she was looking for a way to connect with other mom entrepreneurs. After attending entrepreneurial and momclub meetings she said she felt like she didn’t belong. She left one of the meetings and wrote about how she felt on her blog. “I’m a mom, I’m an entrepreneur. I’m both and there isn’t something that meets those needs for me in terms of meeting other like-minded women,” Pelletier explained. Her blog was read by a local newspaper and as they say, the rest is history. The Mom-e Club started in September 2010. The group has eight chapters in the Valley and seven

outside of the state, one of which is in South Korea. Besides serving as founder, she is the president of the Gilbert Mom-e Club. “We’re more of a global organization,” Pelletier said. “We’ve definitely been spreading out.” Pelletier said the Mom-e Club is therapy. “It’s really challenging to be isolated. A lot of women work for themselves in a home-based office and don’t usually get out unless it’s a networking event.” She said she doesn’t think networking events offer enough time to engage with people and develop a relationship. But the Mom-e Club is different. It’s not about making sales but about connecting and supporting.

5 Tips to Create a Holiday Budget pasta vixen

mom cents

Creating a holiday budget can help you control your spending and make sure you get all of the items you need while staying out of debt or overspending. The thought of a budget can be daunting as well as intimidating, but it does not have to be. Here are five tips to help: Define your needs. Before deciding what you want to do this holiday season, decide what you need to do. Write list down of the gifts that are important for you to buy, the meals that you will be responsible for, and of course, the charities you wish to donate to. Look at your finances in an honest light. Look at your income and decide how much disposable income you have for this holiday season. Disposable income would be what is left after all of your bills for the photo page

month are paid. This is what you have to work with for holiday spending. Be realistic. Yes, we would all like to buy our loved ones incredible gifts, but be realistic. Spending more does not equal a happier holiday. In fact, it only adds stress. Be realistic about what you can afford and only look at options that are in your budget. Create a new shopping list. You know what your needs are, you know what you can spend, and now you know how to be realistic about where to spend it.

Create a new list of the items you need to purchase. Set a dollar amount next to each item and stick to it. Re-evaluate your budget as the season goes on. Each time you make a purchase from your list, cross it off and move to the next. Keep a running tab of what you have spent so far, and note what you have left to spend. This will help you plan your remaining purchases easily and efficiently. That’s it! Just by following these simple steps you can easily create a budget that you can stick too and is user friendly. A debt-free holiday is a feeling that money can’t buy!

takes a certain person to come to the meetings.” She explained the meetings are not about making sales. “It’s about relationship building and creating friendships.” That’s something that Shamira van den Akker was looking for when she moved from Florida to Mesa. She is the president of the North Mesa chapter, a busy business woman and homeschooling mother. When she relocated she didn’t know anyone. “It just took one meeting for me to know that this is where I want to be.” After attending a meeting in Gilbert, van den Akker asked Pelletier if there was a way to start a group in North Mesa. “It is really good because she gives us an agenda and we have round table questions we discuss in the meetings.” She mentioned that all the meetings are discussing the same questions. “It’s good to hear from different business women.” The North Mesa chapter has 10 to 13 women attending regular meetings monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at Victory Energy Wellness Center behind the Walgreens at the corner of Power and Thomas roads. “I chose that day because I get the energy from the meetings and it helps me for the whole month. It’s a good encouragement.” As the owner of Premier Design Jewelry, van den Akker said there is a variety of women entrepreneurs attending the group including a

teacher, Mary Kay representative, massage therapist and chiropractor. Anyone woman who is an independent business owner is welcome. “You don’t have to be a mom,” van den Akker said. “We do target to moms. It’s hard to balance being a mom and a business (owner), but we encourage other women to come.” “I’m just celebrating my year anniversary,” van den Akker said about the North Mesa club. The club is open to women who are business owners; the first three meetings are free. Mom-e club is open to any mom, or non-mom, with a business interested in getting to know other women, business owners, networking, sharing ideas and learning something new. There are 150 members of the Mom-e club. There is a fee to join and members get a coaching session and an e-copy of Pelletier’s book with membership. Joyride Taco House opened in downtown Gilbert’s Heritage District in June to rave reviews. One of many restaurant projects by Wyatt and Lauren Bailey and Kris and Craig DeMarco, it has an upscale look but maintains a welcoming feel. The interior has earthy tones of rust, aquamarine, yellow, tan, green and brown with huge globe lights over the spacious U-shaped bar. Festive Sicilian Fig Bars ‘Cucidati’ pasta vixen

You get two Italians together and it’s not long before the conversation settles food and family—especially during the holidays! Thus began my friendship with Vinny Dejohn, formerly the wine and specialty food buyer at Whole Foods Market in Scottsdale. Getting his suggestions for a good vintage was great, but getting his vintage family recipe for an Italian fig cookie was even greater. Cucidati is one of the most delightful and delicious Sicilian holiday treats. Thankfully, Vinny’s mission a few years ago was to contact his great aunt, carve out some time and preserve a family recipe once and for all. Here’s how Vinny put it: “Great Auntie Antoinette Arnone was 93 years old when she died. Ten years ago during the holidays, I went back to New York and I made arrangements to spend time with events calendar

monthly meeting

Auntie Arnone and have her teach me how to make ‘Goog-i-dottie,’ as she would call them. “We spent all afternoon making the cookies. Not only did I leave with Cucidati, but also her handwritten recipe card and her grandmother’s meat grinder that she herself has been using to grind the fig mixture for 60 years! I was so appreciative of her for taking the time to pass along her recipe. I often think of those treasured moments together.” Vinny’s version of this soft, flavorfilled fig cookie with icing and little colorful candies is now part of my own holiday tradition. What better way to honor my own Sicilian father. The time put into making these delights is well worth it. Keep them in an airtight container and pass them around the table for a festive holiday treat.

To ‘B’ or Not to ‘B’ AB Trust Planning vs. Portability Under ATRA-2012 The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA-2012) was enacted on Jan. 2, 2013, effectively saving us from falling off the Estate & Gift Tax Kenneth C. Barney “Fiscal Cliff ” that threatened us at the end of 2012. ATRA-2012 was a welcome relief for many families who worried that the estate and gift tax exemption would fall back to a $1 million exemption with a 55 percent max tax rate. Some of the changes ATRA2012 made are: • Increase the top estate/gift tax rate from 35 percent in 2012 to 40 percent; • Permanently keeps the estate and gift tax exclusion at $5 million (indexed for inflation); • Annual gift tax exemption increased to $14,000 for 2013; • No “sunset” provision is included in ATRA-2012 (meaning these changes are permanent, for now); • Keeps portability (capturing a deceased spouse’s unused estate tax exemption). The concept of portability means that a married couple is able to fully utilize both spouse’s estate tax exemption ($5.25 million each in 2013) to pass a maximum of $10.5 million to their loved ones estate tax free without having to administer or fund a “B” trust after the first spouse’s death. With ATRA-2012, most families will never have to worry about paying estate taxes. However, since ATRA2012 was passed, the concept of “portability” has raised the question:

Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood

Is my current existing “AB Trust” still appropriate, or is a simpler “A Trust” is all my family now needs with portability? As with any legal analysis, the answer is “It depends.” Every family has its own unique set of circumstances that requires it to discuss these issues with a qualified estate planning professional and/or their CPA. A few of issues I would discuss with a family when answering this question may include: • Step-up in basis at both deaths vs. lack of step-up at second death; • Cost of filing 706 tax return; • Cost of administrating “B” Trust; • Family and remarriage protection; • Surviving spouse asset protection; • Appreciation of “B” trust assets are estate tax free at second death; • Blended family and child protection; • Annual accounting requirements; • Annual income tax (1041/141) returns; • Revocability vs. irrevocability of trusts. In short, it is vital that each family talks with their qualified estate planning professional on a regular basis to discuss tax law changes, as well as other changes in assets and or the family that may have an effect on their estate plan. If you have any questions regarding family-based estate planning or any other legal issues, do not hesitate to call the attorneys at Rowley, Chapman and Barney Ltd. at (480) 833-1113. Kenneth C. Barney is a partner with Rowley Chapman and Barney, Attorneys at Law, whose practice is limited to family based estate planning, tax planning, probate and trust administration and guardianship matters.
