Everlasting Love Sunrise of Gilbert Community Celebrates Residents’ Anniversaries By Lynette Carrington Seventeen couples at Sunrise of Gilbert Senior Living recently celebrated 937 years of marriage collectively. Looking as much in love as they day they met, they were there to celebrate and pass on their marriage advice to a special young couple that was in attendance at the ceremony. Chris Robilotto, pastor of guest services at Sun Valley Community Church, officiated at the ceremony and shared love-related Biblical passages from Corinthians and Philippians. He also shared some of the best advice he ever received for a successful marriage, “If you want it to be successful, serve her,” Robilotto recounted. Gilbert Mayor John Lewis also was in attendance and congratulated all the couples. He also shared a few words of advice that have helped him in his marriage. “I make sure that I always get the last two words and those words those are ‘yes, ma’am,’” Lewis said. His marriage is now 32 years strong with a family that includes nine children and six grandchildren. A lovely young newlywed couple was on hand to listen to the triedand-true advice that the couples volunteered. Valerie and Fidel Perez have worked at Sunrise of Gilbert for several years where they originally met, then fell in love and eventually married. The couple even held their wedding reception at the facility. The residents were overwhelmingly supportive and loving toward the couple who are now a part of the larger Sunrise of Gilbert family. They July 2013

were happy to pass on their words of marriage wisdom. Carlton and Phyllis Ruud have been married for 67 years. They met when Phyllis’ parents purchased the farm next to Carlton’s when she was 12. The couple started to date two years after high school. Their advice to Valerie and Fidel was “Both put your trust in the Lord.” Bill and Carmela Allison have been married for 65 years and were introduced to each other by a mutual friend. They told the young couple, “Never go to bed mad at each other and don’t be afraid to say you’re sorry.” Philip and Kathleen Peterson married 67 years ago, met in fourth grade and attended school together all the way through college. They said, “Always be in love and tell the truth, and listen patiently; don’t criticize.” When the celebration came to a close, the couples and all the guests were treated to cake and other treats in the main dining rooms. Just beyond the celebration was a trip down marriage memory lane with a table full of photos of the happy couples on their wedding day. Included in the display was a gorgeous lace-covered gown from the wedding of Roy and Fernel Downing on Nov. 15, 1942. It was Fernel’s wedding dress and was purchased at Miller’s Department Store for $14.95. The gown looked as new and as lovely as the day it was purchased. Congratulations to all the couples who celebrated on this special day. For more photos from this celebration, see our Neighborhood Photos feature on page 12.

Caring for a Special Needs Child By Tracy House The children are outside swimming and Kim Hansen can share a few minutes of her time. The older children are looking after their younger siblings and it’s quiet in the house that is usually bustling with activity. Hansen sits at her kitchen table, hands crossed in front of her, the raucous squeals of laughter muffled from outside. Hansen’s four biological daughters are on their own, married and starting families, but at home are her nine adopted children, all of whom were drug exposed before coming to live with her. The children have varying degrees of learning disabilities, from minor delays to profound disabilities. Of her nine adopted children, Andrew, who is now 14 years old and going into eighth grade, is the

one Hansen calls her special needs child. “The day to day with him is significant,” she said closing her eyes remembering. She tries to not get teary-eyed every time she talks about his journey. Andrew was 1-week-old when he came to Hansen. She adopted him at 8 months old. Hansen said Andrew was a completely typical baby up until he was 4 years old when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on the brain stem called a medulloblastoma, which is related to the drug exposure in utero shortly after conception. Three days after the diagnosis Andrew had surgery. The cancer was on the brain stem and could not be completely removed. As a result, Andrew became disabled.

buttons of his iPad, his communication device, and hopefully one day type on a keyboard to communicate. His speech therapists help him navigate on his communication device with spelling and typing, to communicate better. Andrew is learning American Sign Language but has difficulty using signs and needs somebody who knows him to interpret. “My goal, my hope is that one day he’ll be able to actually spell words, and even if he could finger point, even if it takes him half an hour for a greeting, that would be such an accomplishment,” Hansen said, taking a deep breath to hold back the tears. They’ve come a long way, Hansen said, but are probably as far as they are going to be able to go with Andrew. For a long time she tried to do it all herself but realized through this lifechanging event she needed to let others help. “It’s very hard to release that responsibility, especially to someone

else,” she said. “As he got a little bit older, for those first several years we always thought he would improve and this would just be a short-term situation and I was always completely and totally hands-on working to get to that point. And then we started crossing that bridge of this might be as good as it gets, as close to back to normal as we’re going to see.” If Hansen has any advice for other mothers who are facing a significant situation, it’s to find somebody who has worked through the system and to connect with someone who can help figure things out. She also mentioned finding good help—respite and habilitation workers, friends or families—you are comfortable with because you do need a break. Hansen doesn’t rest until Andrew is tucked safely in bed each night. “It is 24/7 truly,” she said. Tracy House is a busy AZ Modern Mom of four, freelance writer and former educator. Back to School Know-How: 5 Tips to Save on School Supplies pasta vixen

mom cents

It may feel a bit early, but the truth is that now is the perfect time to start scouting out the back-to-school deals to find what you need so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Here are a few tips to help you save on school supplies. 1. Find out what you can reuse before you start shopping. Backpacks, calculators, rulers, scissors and binders are all items that can last more than one year. 2. Start shopping now for basics. If you don’t already have your school supply list, stock up on the basics (pencils, paper, notebooks, etc.) and wait until you know exactly what you need for all the extras. Insider tip: Not sure you want to visit a bunch of different stores? You can price match the sales at Walmart. Items that are often available to photo page

price match include name-brand items like Sharpie, Crayola, Bic pens and Elmer’s glue. 3. Buy plain and personalize. The simple undecorated school supplies cost less and they are just as effective. You may even find that the store brand is cheaper. But to kids, they may not be as fun, so let them personalize their supplies with stickers, labels and colorful doodles. 4. Take advantage of reward programs. Office supply stores often offer “free after rebate” or “free after rewards” items. By

understanding how each of these programs works, you can pick up name-brand school supplies like pens, paper, highlighters, Sharpies, etc. for just a few pennies after rewards. The drug stores also have reward programs with free or cheap items each week during the backto-school season, so make sure you are checking those ads, too. 5. Shop the loss leaders. Each week the office supply stores and national retailers like Target and Kmart offer school supply loss leaders. Nothing stands the test of time like true love. Recently, Sunrise of Gilbert held a special wedding anniversary tribute for their residents that encompassed a total of 937 years of wedded bliss. Through all the happiness, fond memories, trials and tribulations, each couple looked as in love as the first day they met. Their love is eternal and their bond strengthened through the years. From their many years of life experience, the couples had words of wisdom to pass on to a very special newlywed couple that the residents have come to know and love. Salerno’s Restaurant and Pizzeria If you have been looking for an authentic Italian family restaurant, look no further than Salerno’s Restaurant and Pizzeria on Guadalupe Road, just west of Recker Road, in Gilbert. It was opened in 2004 by three generations of the Salerno family who were recent transplants from Chicago, where they had owned restaurants for almost 40 years. Rosario, the son of Vincenzo, told us that they have a huge following from Chicago because their food “tastes like home.” That is why “people drive from Tucson, Glendale, Casa Grande and Scottsdale to eat food that is homemade,” he proudly added. We planned our visit to take advantage of the lunch menu’s reduced prices and were immediately greeted comm. spotlight

by Tracy, the catering manager. We were quickly seated in the large dining room with lots of Tuscan red and forest green complimenting a large Italian mural and numerous pictures. Lakin, our server, brought the menus and took our drink orders. The three-page dinner menu includes appetizers, pastas, pizzas, sandwiches and specialties with seafood, veal and chicken, as well as desserts and wines. The one-page lunch specials are good on Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include pizza, pasta and sandwiches which all come with a choice of side (soup, salad, garlic bread or fries.) After placing our orders, we enjoyed delicious warm bread which was monthly meeting

crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside, as well as a fresh green salad with homemade croutons. Lou’s Italian roast beef sandwich ($7.95) included tender roast beef with grilled onions and melted mozzarella cheese on a large roll. Katie’s baked mostaccioli ($7.95) had yummy layers of pasta, ricotta and mozzarella cheese, ground beef and homemade red sauce. My lasagna ($7.95) was a delicious marriage of pasta, cheeses, meat and sauce. We also ordered two slices of pizza—one pepperoni and one sausage ($6.50)—and if you like thick Chicago-style pizza, this is the place for you! It was great for lunch and even better the next day. If we had to choose a favorite to recommend, it would be the baked mostaccioli. My daughter Katie loves tiramisu so we shared this tasty dessert. Needless to say, she was in mocha heaven as she carefully savored each delightful bite. As we were finishing our lunch, Grandpa Vincenzo came out and addressed us and all our fellow diners and said “How was the food?” How nice to feel like family. Salerno’s has a huge take-out and

catering business, in addition to the restaurant. So, for those of you who shun the chains and prefer to dine at a “mom and pop” (or in this case “grandpa and grandma”) establishment, you will want to visit this friendly, authentic taste of Italy by way of Chicago. Stop by for lunch or dinner on Tuesday through Sunday and tell Vincenzo and Rosario that you read about them in the North Gilbert Breeze.

Pending before the U.S. Supreme Court is a case nicknamed after a young girl that two families are fighting for. “Baby Jessica” lived with her adoptive parents for two years before they suddenly lost custody. The biological father, despite having signed away his parental rights prior to the adoption, gained custody of a child he’d never met due to a federal law offering special considerations for cases involving children of Native Americans. The biological mother is now inadvertently excluded from the daughter she thought she sent to a better life. Although uncommon, this case highlights how dangerous adoption proceedings can be. State law is no different. Arizona law attempts to balance the rights of mothers, fathers and the adoptive parents. Arizona adoption laws are highly technical, however, and the slightest mistakes can result in an irreversible and unintended outcome. For example, in anticipation of an adoption, biological fathers are often sent a “notice of potential birth father” from birth mothers or their attorneys. This can be as simple as a single page, can be mailed to father as young as 15 years

Birth Father’s Rights and Obligations in Adoption old, and is effective even without his parents knowing. Failure to timely respond within 30 days can result in the permanent and irreversible exclusion of that father from the adoption proceeding. This result is extremely harsh, because it bars a father from objecting to the adoption—even months before the birth occurs. Fathers have an obligation to respond within 30 days and must take additional steps if they object to the adoption. Filing a paternity action is one such step, and can be done before the birth of the child. Registering with the putative father registry is another, but likewise has a short timeframe. In other words, don’t wait to consult an attorney until it is too late. Adoption proceedings are extremely emotional for all parties involved. Adoptive parents need to have finality and assurance that their adoption was handled correctly. Both biological parents and birth parents need to assert their rights to avoid unintended consequences. If you or a loved one have any questions regarding paternity or adoptions in Arizona, contact Rowley, Chapman & Barney.

Teaching Principles of God, Family and Country Nancy Genys has been on a mission to create a stimulating, challenging and inspiring curriculum for a school of her own for years. She came close to starting a school on seven different occasions. After reviewing curriculum models throughout the United States and having long conversations with school owners, she knew she was ready. Then life threw her a curve ball with the deaths of two of her children in less than three years. That put the school on hold. A year and a half ago she finally came upon Kimber Academy and knew she had found exactly what she wanted—and the timing was right. The dream of opening her school became a reality this year. “I wanted something that would provide the best academics possible for my two young children,” Genys said. “I knew this was it. I am very close to God so I loved that Kimber curriculum incorporates my Scriptures of choice in their academic application as they do for all children at the school.” The school uses a trio of principles revolving around God, family and country as their benchmark. The school offers educations for students age preschool through 12th grades and elective classes that homeschoolers are also welcome to attend. “We have a full array of dance, music, acting, Spanish, science, arts and crafts, chess, tennis, guitar, etc.,” Genys said. “We also have regular school activities. Keep in mind, our students only attend three half days a week. That is all they need and amazingly, can progress a grade every 90 days if the parents direct it.” Parents determine the pace at which their child is educated and, therefore, the school develops unique relationships with its parents because the school is self-governed. governing is an important component of its overall success. “Parents set the pace for their children,” she said. “Together they set goals and then meet with the dean monthly to see how they are doing and if they set realistic goals. The parents truly are in charge of their child’s education. Students are tested three times annually with a test designed by Simon and Schuster (who create the ACT and SAT tests). This provides an unbiased assessment on each student’s knowledge.” All instructors at Kimber Academy are certified to teach Kimber curriculum. Enrollment for the Kimber Academy will be limited to 200 students and tuition is very affordable. Parents are invited to tour the campus by appointment. “Common Core (curriculum) is dangerous,” Genys said. “It is not designed for the betterment of children and, if parents are looking for alternatives (we do not use common core and won’t), Kimber Academy is a solid choice. We also don’t do data tracking on children either.” Reserve a space as soon as possible to ensure your child can attend. Kimber Academy believes that nurturing a love of learning in every child is top priority. Kimber Academy is located at the Clearview Cultural Center at 1355 S. Clearview Avenue (south of Southern Avenue). Call (480) 659-5980 or visit www.KimberAcademyMesa.com for additional information.
