DESIGNING A DREAM

Welcome to the first issue of WE World Magazine!

Long before I ever sketched a room or selected a piece of fabric, I dreamed of design. Throughout my youth, I visualized the day when I would become a professional designer. When that dream came true in 1989, my journey truly began. Over the years, it expanded to include other passions along the way, like fashion and helping people. As my design career evolved, so did my story.

Soon I had a new dream: to share that story with a wider audience, to celebrate and uplift others on a broader scale. WE World Magazine is the embodiment of that.

Getting to this point has not been easy. When I look back and recall where I began, I know WE World is possible only because of my community. The endless love and support of clients and colleagues, family and friends, has made me who I am. Especially in this first issue, I want to express my gratitude to my partner in life and business, Gary Harlan, for always believing in me and for his unshakable guidance and encouragement. I’m beyond thankful for my incredible team, without whom there would be no WE World or Wilfredo Emanuel Design.

This magazine honors the beauty that surrounds each of us, in how and where we gather with one another, how we live, and what brings us joy. I’m so excited that through WE World, we can live in these moments together.

I hope as you’re designing your own dream, you’ll find inspiration and purpose in these pages. Thank you for joining me on this grand adventure.

Forever yours,

Wilfredo Emanuel

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

The opposite of the infinity pool, cocktail pools are a must-have in luxury residences and resorts everywhere.

42 THREADS OF BRILLIANCE

Bespoke clothier Dominic Lacquaniti weaves a fashion legacy.

46 IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Two South Florida residences designed by Wilfredo Emanuel highlight current interior design trends.

54 MIDCENTURY MADNESS

Palm Springs remains the place for star-studded midcentury architecture and all things mod.

Chefs everywhere are bringing fish eggs back to basics — taking it from the tasting stand to the top bar.

An enchanting Naples respite blends the past with the present.

Designing your own stunning tablescape the WE way is like telling a story, one place setting at a time.

With more customization and more exclusivity, hotels, tour operators and destinations are appealing to travelers with a taste for the finer things in life.

CHECKING IN

WITH CHECKERBOARD ACCESSORIES POPPING UP IN TABLESCAPES, FLOORING, FASHION AND HOME DÉCOR, IT’S NOW HIP TO BE SQUARE.

WHILE CHECKERBOARD PATTERNS

have been around for centuries — think Greek and Roman empires, the halls of Versailles, the aisle of St. George’s Chapel and underfoot in the corridors of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art — the iconic motif is back in the spotlight again in home décor and fashion, from Gucci and Stine Goya to Dolce & Gabbana. From surprising color combinations to psychedelic takes on the trend, these new variations spotlight designers re-imagining this classic pattern in a fresh way.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

While warm neutrals have been the go-to for checkerboard patterns, appearing now are warm rust tones like this double-breasted sequined checked jacket worn by Wilfredo Emanuel from Dolce & Gabbana’s new futuristic collection built around new proportions and geometries, with silhouettes created with technical fabrics, graffiti prints and all-over logo detailing; $5,595; us.dolcegabbana.com.

THAT’S AMORE

Taking their inspiration from the Italian-American locations and institutions of Williamsburg, NY, the Giglio (and Salerno and Vespucci) hand-tufted rug designs from Pieces pays homage to the colorful and fantastical aesthetic of modern Italian design of the 1960’s and ‘70s. Crafted from New Zealand wool yarns, which are hand-dyed and tufted onto a 100% cotton woven backing, all rugs are made to order; $1080; pieceshome.com.

CHECKS, MATE

A classic pattern gets a rainbow makeover in this bright, bold Checkerboard Backgammon Set from Jonathan Adler. Crafted in couture lacquer and featuring a nifty interior pattern, this backgammon set is “chic, graphique, classique.” After vanquishing your foes, fold it closed for a cool cocktail table accent; $425; jonathanadler.com.

GAME DAY

Chess or checkers with your soup? Wilfredo Emanuel designed this King’s Garden tablescape for a Naples Tables charity event . The table was inspired by the TV series “The Queen’s Gambit.”

ALL ABOARD

It’s hard to mention checkerboard without a shout out to MacKenzie-Childs, who has been using the print as its brand signature since the 1980s. This 5’ x 5’ Train Table recalls the opulence of an era when travel by rail was the height of style with a top of vinyl tile sealed with lacquer and trimmed with a cherry molding, border and apron. The four handmade, hand-glazed and hand-painted ceramic legs are decorated with floral transfers, gold lustre embellishments and brass buttons, the perfect piece to travel back to the grandeur of a bygone era; $8,995; mackenzie-childs.com.

WILFREDO EMANUEL’S FAVORITE THINGS

WHY WE LOVE IT

“I love LV L’immensité because it lasts all day long, is easily recognizable, has a fresh scent, and is not overpowering.”

LOUIS VUITTON L’IMMENSITÉ

From heady florals to woody musks and more, Louis Vuitton perfumes, housed inside chic, minimalist, refillable bottles (in stores equipped with a perfume fountain), are inspired by Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud’s travels. L’immensité is no exception; its ginger, amber and grapefruit notes are “like a response to a vast, beckoning sea that nourishes fantasies of total freedom.”

WHY WE LOVE IT

“I don’t often drink, but when I do, I love to indulge a little with a glass of 2008 La Grand Dame Champagne. It just feels expensive. I love the taste and feel regal when sipping it.”

VEUVE CLICQUOT LA GRAND DAME 2008

One of the finest Champagne vintages, La Grande Dame 2008 is elegant, rich and complex with beautiful mature aromas such as dried fruits, praline, quince paste and truffle.

EMOTIONAL ESCAPE ROOMS

Coined by Pinterest, this pandemic-incited trend is here to stay and refers to the way people are recharging at home by repurposing their now-not-so-used guest rooms into sacred spaces — which includes everything from massage rooms to music dens, meditation rooms and crystal caverns.

WHY WE LOVE IT

“ After everything we have been through the past few years, especially with the pandemic, I think people are looking for safe spaces within their own homes where they can unwind and relax. Many are incorporating resort like amenities into their spaces and creating areas that allow them to do what they enjoy without having to leave the sanctuary of their own home. ”

SPACE TRAVEL

For those with disposable income, you can now buy a $450,000 seat on one of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic’s suborbital space planes — for a reservation for future travel. Click the “Fly With Us” button on the Virgin Galactic website and you can request an application. (virgingalactic.com)

WHY WE LOVE IT

“ I remember watching the first man to walk on the moon and how exciting that was to see. To me, a trip like this would be the ultimate travel experience — exploring a new destination that very few people in our lifetimes will ever get the opportunity to visit.”

THE BROOCH

Formerly associated with grandmothers and the Queen, the brooch was considered oldfashioned, until recently, when it reemerged as a logo pin, or as a simple lapel pin being worn by men and women alike.

WHY WE LOVE IT

“The brooch is one of my favorite ways to accessorize an outfit. There are so many different options, from antique to vintage to designer. It’s the perfect way to accentuate your style. To me, it is the finishing touch to balance your outfit. I wear one every day — even when it wasn’t a trend. I have antiques. I have Dior. I have pearls.”

“When I was 9 or younger, my aunt gave me a little pony for Christmas and I hated it. She asked what I wanted instead, and I said I wanted the Barbie camper. I got it and did weddings in it, designed dresses, a Spanish girl, string explosions. Barbie nostalgia, in hot pink, neon pink, bubblegum pink, is all the rage.”

BARBIECORE

The 2023 summer release of the new Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken has brought the pinklight to the already popular fashion trend, Barbicore, seen on everyone from Paris Hilton on the Versace runway in Paris to SZA and Glenn Close at the Met Gala in New York.

MARISSA COLLECTIONS

For nearly half a century, Marissa Collections founder and expert stylist Marissa Hartington has redefined luxury fashion and revolutionized personal styling, helping clients develop their individual style through personalized service and a curated collection of designer clothing, fine jewelry, accessories and shoes. In the spacious boutiques in Naples and Palm Beach, clients are surrounded by the extravagance of Oscar de la Renta, Brunello Cucinelli, David Webb, Irene Neuwirth, Foundrae, Manolo Blahnik and many more award-winning designers.

WHY WE LOVE IT

“Marissa Collections is the place to go to see what is happening in the fashion industry. The staff is knowledgeable, stylish and always welcoming. It’s like we have our own little piece of Rodeo Drive here in Naples ”

MET GALA

The Met Gala — a charity event that is considered a fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute — has become a much-loved annual celebration of fashion that takes place the first Monday in May. The controversial 2023 exhibition — Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty — will see around 150 pieces paired with Lagerfeld’s original sketches, and those on the guestlist, a who’s who of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment, will design their looks around the theme. The decision to honor Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019, has sparked some online outrage due to things he allegedly said and did throughout his career.

WHY WE LOVE IT

“It is my dream to one day attend and walk the red carpet at the Met Gala. For a designer like myself, it is amazing to see the involvement of the other artists and designers. To watch the development of the event, everything from the decor and the tablescapes to the fashion, it’s all magical. It’s like being transported to another world for one evening.”

LOGOMANIA

Logos are back, in a way not seen since the ‘90s, with respected fashion houses such as Gucci and Balenciaga creating head-totoe looks, from the serious to the whimsical. Other luxury brands have either gone oversized all over or steered more minimal, such as former Louis Vuitton Artistic Director Virgil Abloh’s Off-White imprint, which has received the universal thumbs up for its cheeky use of logos.

WHY WE LOVE IT

” One of my favorite styles is to use a monochromatic look accentuated by logomania in order to showcase my favorite designers from head to toe. When I am putting together an outfit, I think about the entire design and incorporate different versions of the same designer logo into each element of my look to create the overall composition I want to achieve.”

TOYING WITH TOILE

THE FASHION WORLD ONCE AGAIN TURNS TO THE ICONIC FABRIC FOR INSPIRATION.

WALK INTO A CHATEAU, YOUR grandmother’s guest bedroom or the trendiest boutique hotel in town and you’re likely to see an element of Toile de Jouy. This iconic fabric translates to “cloth of Jouy”—named after Jouy-en-Josas, the town near Paris where it hails from, is still in demand today. But like everything in fashion that has staying power, there’s more to this pretty print than meets the eye.

Often associated with interiors, modern uses of Toile de Jouy are no longer reserved to plush pillows and porcelain plates—but are now reinterpreted by designers and used on everything from silk evening gowns to men’s blazers and perfume bottles.

Known for its scenes depicting pastoral pastimes, rural landscapes, mythological creatures or flora and fauna—artists today (just as in the past) embrace the myriad motifs that can be shown with toile. There aren’t many fabrics that can boast having their own museum—or a Masterclass explaining its intricate uses and complex history.

SHARING THEIR STORIES

Textile historians and designers have been fascinated with its monochromatic color scheme. Historically, only in a handful of colors such as blue, black or red were used, but modern toile has a fresh expanded color palette. These unexpected hues, along with the repeated pattern of stories that this simple fabric yields, appeals to those who care to take a closer look.

It’s ironic that what we associate with a French Bourgeois fabric has its origins in Ireland. But it was German born dyer Christophe-Philipe Oberkampf who opened a factory in Jouy-en-Josas, conveniently en route to the Palace of Versailles, and his obsession with the cloth sealed its fate and gave us its name.

ULRA-MODERN AND INVERSED TOILE

Toile de Jouy has somehow remained relevant—perhaps due to its powerful storytelling ability. Now part of the DNA of Christian Dior, it was Monsieur Dior who, with the help of his design team, had custom Toile de Jouy decorate the walls of his Maison. This toile was the springboard for Dior’s current creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, who reinvented the motif of tigers and monkeys now synonymous with the brand and placed it and inversed versions on everything from totes to ponchos.

Other fashion designers have also taken variations of Toile de Jouy and made it their own. Dries Van Noten, a master of print, has hand painted Toile de Jouy motifs on porcelain fragrance bottles as if there were vases. Thom Browne, the designer known for irreverent classic ensembles, has used the print to soften the look of rigid schoolboy style blazers.

And whether you love a head-to-toe look or you’re a print skeptic and believe a little goes a long way, one thing is for certain—Toile de Jouy is no flash in the pan, and the once old, now modern toile, is here to stay.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND S

THE OPPOSITE OF THE INFINITY POOL, COCKTAIL POOLS ARE A MUST-HAVE IN LUXURY RESIDENCES AND RESORTS EVERYWHERE.

imply the name “cocktail pool” evokes images of sophisticated fun: martinis and margaritas shared with friends around the pool enjoying a perfect sunset. Cocktail pools are small, typically around 400 square feet depending on the space available and personal tastes. As with larger-size pools, prices depend on design and amenities, but there is no question they work well for intimate gatherings and simply enjoying a dip.

“Having a cocktail pool gives your guests an area to enjoy the outdoors while taking a dip to beat the heat and sip a cocktail.”
—WILFREDO EMANUEL

Interior Designer Wilfredo Emanuel has created cocktail pools that deserve to be noticed. “Cocktail pools are a fantastic way to create an entertainment space without having to put in an entire pool,” he says. “Having a cocktail pool gives your guests an area to enjoy the outdoors while taking a dip to beat the heat and sip a cocktail.” They can be especially nice for homes that have smaller backyards or limited space, he says. And because of their smaller size, they are generally easier to care for and can be less costly. “Whether they are used by themselves or in addition to a full-sized pool, cocktail pools are a great way to create the perfect outdoor space for you and your guests to enjoy,” says Emanuel.

CONSIDER A SPOOL

Also gaining traction among homeowners are spools. “Since homeowners are looking for more amenities at home without the huge upkeep, cocktail pools or ‘spools’ have become very popular. You can use it as a pool in the hot summer months and then as a spa in the cooler

winter season — the best of both worlds,” says Mary Jeffrey, a Realtor with Bennion Deville Homes in Palm Desert, CA who recently sold a home with a spool in Palm Springs. “The upkeep is a fraction of a full-sized pool with a separate spa and accommodates smaller lots. Homeowners love it and it adds value to the home when it sells,” she says.

PERFECTLY PERFECT FOR SMALL SPACES

Kathy Roberts and her family moved from their longtime Los Angeles home with a large pool to a new construction modern home with a cocktail pool in a Palm Springs gated community. Roberts doesn’t miss her 60-foot pool, home to many birthday parties. “These homes included a pool. You got to design the size, lounge seating and sunning area. We chose a cocktail pool where you can’t swim laps. It’s perfect for the size of our yard and we love to sit by it and enjoy a cocktail. We did add a waterfall to the design,” she says. Is there a cocktail pool in your future?

“They can be especially nice for homes that have smaller backyards or limited space.“

Unique Mixes

Mixologists are creating rare liquids with seasonal ingredients and bespoke presentations that are giving modern twists to regional cocktail menus.

THESE DAYS, COCKTAIL MENUS are ever-evolving, and while there will undoubtedly always be room for the classics, the modern imbiber is curious, adventurous and always seeking the next best thing, with an emphasis on uniquety. These demands keep bartenders and mixologists on their toes, concocting some of the moment’s favorite cocktails from mixologists around the country. Here are some of their top picks.

FEAST OF GÉVAUDAN

HECATE, BOSTON, MA

[ INGREDIENTS ]

‘DOUBLE ZÉRO’ EAU DE VIE DE CIDRE, CADENHEAD’S OLD RAJ, BROVO

LUCKY FALERNUM AND HOUSEMADE MUSTARD CORDIAL

“The name itself is a play on words regarding the Beast of Gévaudan, the monster terrorizing the French in the late 1700s, but the inspiration came in a very different era, during lockdown,” says Aliz Meszesi, beverage director of Hecate. “I was having a warm pretzel with cream cheese and spicy mustard and the combination tasted like a cheeseburger, so I decided to perfect a mustard cordial that, together with other spirits, would create a savory, bold drink that both reminds you of something familiar and makes you ask a new question with every sip.” The cordial contains two types of mustard, Hungarian paprika, curry, honey and horseradish powder, and is paired with a French cider brandy, a saffron gin from Scotland and a spiced ginger liqueur. A tiny charcuterie board on top serves both as a garnish and a palate booster, taking the ingredients and the name to a full circle.

BASIL ADVICE

BAR TULIA, NAPLES, FL

THE EURO

THE FRENCH, NAPLES, FL

[ INGREDIENTS ] TEQUILA, ITALICUS, WHITE CHOCOLATE, LEMON, CHOCOLATE BITTERS AND CHI-CHI (A VEGAN EGG WHITE SUBSTITUTE)

“The Euro holds a spot incredibly close to our head bartender’s heart. Daniel is a career bartender of 26 years who originally comes from Germany,” says Kay Ousley, general manager at The French. “When creating new drinks, he pays close attention to balanced taste while using ingredients he really loves (tequila is his favorite spirit). The name of the cocktail pays homage to European tastes and is one of our favorites on the cocktail menu!”

[ INGREDIENTS ]

VODKA, APEROL, GRAPEFRUIT, CITRUS, DEMERARA AND BASIL

“Basil Advice had humble beginnings four years ago. One of our resident bartenders, Stef, had some ladies come in and simply say ‘make me a drink.’ At the time, vodka wasn’t a spirit of focus within Bar Tulia but with its approachability to many, Basil Advice was born,” says general manager Kay Ousley.

GREEN LIGHT

FREDDY’S SPEAKEASY, MIAMI, FL

[ INGREDIENTS ] A RICH, SWEET AND SMOKY DECADENT BLEND OF DEL MAGUEY VIDA MEZCAL, CHARTREUSE, CHOCOLATE BITTERS, FRESH LEMON JUICE AND SIMPLE SYRUP

“The mixologists were inspired to create an exclusive-to-Freddy’s cocktail that is a unique spin on prohibition-era style cocktails, but with a modern, Miami-twist,” says Robert Renfroe, food and beverage director at InterContinental Miami, where the 12-seat cocktail bar is tucked inside. He adds that “the fusion of the alcohol with fresh herbs, juices and bitters” is the perfect combination that makes the team love it so much.

M BILE

Moliving’s “nomadic” concept aims to change the way we think about where we stay.

OHOSPITALITY

BETWEEN THE REDEFINITION OF hospitality through platforms like Airbnb and VRBO and pandemic-related changes in traveler taste, it seems Moliving is bringing its “nomadic hotel” concept to market at exactly the right time.

“We realized we had a great opportunity as a small brand—operating like a Ferrari rather than a semitruck,” says Moliving CEO & founder Jordan Bem.

As a new concept, Bem can build Moliving to be flexible and nimble, meeting the needs of a specific hotel location by utilizing proprietary modular luxury units that can be moved at any time as the market demands. Each unit is approximately 400 sq. ft, includes two 120-sq.-ft. outdoor decks and is built to the quality of discerning travelers.

All of the units are movable, so Moliving can physically transport rooms to another location as the market demands. Given Bem’s aggressive expansion plans, that will only serve to help propel Moliving’s growth.

Moliving’s first property, Hurley House, will open in 2023 in New York’s Hudson Valley with 60 rooms. From there, Moliving will separate quadrants across the U.S., expanding along the east coast, followed by the west, then shifting to less developed locations. There are also plans for international expansion into western Europe.

Bem explains that Moliving has ultimate flexibility once it has the case study of the first property, helping other municipalities understand the low footprint and high upside of a hotel concept that can be, quite literally, on the move.

The extension of that low footprint is Bem’s commitment to making the modular rooms as sustainable as possible. The rooms themselves are built with a range of recycled and responsible materials, and the company is measuring the impact of its entire operation through a partnership with a major environmental tracking firm.

“We’re actually using a new program based off of LEED certification that our partners at PwC Luxembourg Sustainable Real Estate are helping us with because what we’re offering is unlike anything else available,” Bem says.

As luxury travelers search for the next great adventure in the next stunning locale, perhaps all they’ll need is a hotel room that can meet them wherever that might be.

BESPOKE CLOTHIER DOMINIC LACQUANITI WEAVES A FASHION LEGACY. By

Among other talented members of his Italian family, Naples clothier Dominic Lacquaniti grew up with a deep appreciation for art and traveled to Florence to study the Renaissance masters. The iconic Gianni Versace is among Lacquaniti’s favorite designers, and when his travels to Italy take him near Calabria, he pays a visit to Versace’s studio to touch the Medusa emblazoned on the door. The insignia pays homage to the Greek mythological figure whom Versace chose to signify his place in this world.

Like Versace, Lacquaniti has taken his rightful place in history as a keeper of the craft, earning richly deserved respect and accolades. Enamored with art history and the fascinating people who create it, honoring the individuality of his clients is in the blood.

“It is not about being a master at anything, but rather taking time to get to know my clients,” says Lacquaniti, who nurtures these connections with a cup of coffee, or glass of wine, and meaningful conversation. “I learn a client’s likes and dislikes and when I present a design, it’s for them alone.”

Lacquaniti is descended from legendary clothier Rocco Lacquaniti, a master tailor in Naples dating back to 1968. “My dad always told me, your clients are paying you to design and make clothes for them alone,” says Lacquaniti, who calls his famous father an incredible person and totally unique. “Since I was a kid, I was raised in the business with my dad, and I would sleep underneath his table with all the fabrics.”

Lacquaniti’s footwear is as iconic as his clothing. While his father gained international recognition for his tailoring, his uncle was a master shoe craftsman. Lacquaniti’s clients relish the shoes he designs for them, handcrafted only for their feet.

“By the grace of God, I fell in love with a small company who handmakes my shoes right outside

True Art

WILFREDO EMANUEL’S PERSONAL CLOTHIER, DOMINIC LACQUANITI, DRESSES HIS CLIENTS WITH PASSION.

Working as a personal clothier to Wilfredo Emanuel, Lacquaniti says his favorite thing about the detailobsessed designer is how far he is willing to go to take a risk. “I’ll say, ‘Man, Wilfredo – I never did that before!’ and Wilfredo will say, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll make it happen!’ so he pushes me,” says Lacquaniti.

From suits to scarves to pajamas Lacquaniti created for the cover of a magazine, Emanuel reserves high praise for Lacquaniti’s talents, and the heart and soul he puts into every creation.

“The role he plays when someone is creating a brand and an image that includes bespoke clothing, that helps people know who you are and it makes a difference when you enjoy what you do that much,” says Emanuel. “Coming from his father who was a famous tailor for many years, the threads of what he does as a custom clothier runs through his veins.”

of Rome and in their 400 years of history, they just make shoes,” says Lacquaniti.

Even in the face of disaster, Lacquaniti’s compassion for others shines through in the unthinkable loss his hometown of Naples suffered after Hurricane Ian.

“My father always advised me not to look at the dollar amount of a project, but instead to take care of the client and that will take care of the business side,” says Lacquaniti.

That turned out to be prophetic advice. Honoring the Lacquaniti craft and caring about his clients has come full circle. Hurricane Ian all but destroyed Lacquaniti’s shop, but his community has stepped up to rebuild it. And to help others who lost so much in the storm, this past October, Lacquaniti hosted a two-day shoe giveaway of the items he was able to save from his store.

“We gave away 350 plus shoes, and I just thought, the best thing would be to give them away to people who actually need them more than we do,” says Lacquaniti. “It felt really good to help our community, to give people a little bit of hope and a little bit of happiness.”

“When I met Dominic, it was a perfect match …he is a true artist,” says Emanuel. “With his ability to map a person and who they are in their clothing, he has a way of taking every single design and making it so personal and emotional, dressing people with such great energy and passion.”

Emanuel says Lacquaniti has a magical aura that makes everyone who enters his studio instantly comfortable. He is helping Lacquaniti design his new studio after Hurricane Ian destroyed his old one, interpreting what Lacquaniti wants in order to showcase the love he has for his work.

The world watched Emanuel, who is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to gorgeous clothes, become one of the most fashionable people in the design world on HGTV’s hit show “Table Wars.” He is known for his attention to detail, down to the tiniest element, something Lacquaniti appreciates.

“Wilfredo is extremely particular, even in bringing things in to be tailored, but my favorite outfit we did for him was from a gorgeous piece of dark chocolate fabric from Italy,” says Lacquaniti. “He was one of the first clients to understand the continental waistband, which is a higher-waisted pant, two-inch waist with double closure, two button front and two small fashion pleats.”

“COMING FROM HIS FATHER WHO WAS A FAMOUS TAILOR FOR MANY YEARS, THE THREADS OF WHAT HE DOES AS A CUSTOM CLOTHIER RUNS THROUGH HIS VEINS.”
- WILFREDO EMANUEL

The offset pocket design doesn’t disturb the hips, he explains. It’s simply a straight, thin pocket off the center seam which lays flat, the classic Lacquaniti continental pant.

“Wilfredo was the first to say, ‘Ooh, let’s do a double-breasted suit!’ so that’s what we did,” says Lacquaniti. “Whatever you do, it starts with the cloth and picking things for clients, not because you want to look good, but because you want them to look good.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

TWO SOUTH FLORIDA RESIDENCES DESIGNED BY WILFREDO EMANUEL HIGHLIGHT CURRENT INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS.

WILFREDO EMANUEL

INSPIRATION

The homeowner of this Bonita Bay Residence wanted plenty for space for entertaining. With that in mind, WE designed an open layout concept with plenty of room for guests to gather and converse. WE used large, sliding glass doors that could be fully opened to unite the indoor and outdoor areas and selected both indoor and outdoor furniture that was cohesive to make it all feel as one space. WE used white materials and furnishings with splashes of jewel-toned accessories to create a modern look.

“Purple is a symbol of wisdom and royalty. It’s bright, vibrant and can be used to make a bold design statement. Using it in an unsuspecting way, “ says Wilfredo Emanuel, “like at the entrance of a home, can immediately create a feeling of luxury for your guests to experience.”

FABULOUS BATHROOMS

“With amenities such as steam showers, saunas, and soaking tubs, homeowners are spending a lot more time in their master bathrooms,” says Emanuel. “So, it is important not to neglect the design of these spaces. Adding upholstered seating, ambient lighting, and using quality materials create spaces that exude luxury and comfort.”

WINE CELLARS

“In the past, the wine cellar was a hidden room where people had to go inside to enjoy.,” says Emanuel. “By using the best woods, lighting and stone in the design, the wine cellar is now becoming a major focal point of the luxury home. Putting the wine cellar on display not only showcases the homeowner’s collection of wines, but it also makes it more functional, accessible and helps add to the overall ambiance when entertaining guests.”

INSPIRATION

The intent of the design for this Naples residence was to combine the client’s request for a very clean interior concept that was cohesive with the natural beauty of the outdoors, resulting in a contemporary-chic design. To achieve the desired look and feel, WE included textured elements throughout both the interior and exterior spaces. The kitchen was designed to include plenty of space for entertaining while the zebra wood cabinets hid many of the appliances, giving the space a clean, modern look.

STUNNING BACKSPLASHES

“Before, backsplashes were just used as additions to finish the cabinet space, but these designs have come a long way.,” says Emanuel. “Now, the backsplash has become a main focal point. From agate and natural stones to marble to book-matched porcelain, there are many different options. And some can even be enhanced and highlighted by adding back lighting. The possibilities are endless.”

SCULPTURAL

LIGHTING

“Spaces with clean lines and very architectural furnishings benefit tremendously by sculptural lighting,” says Emanuel. “These uniquely shaped pieces not only add light to the space, but also give a sense of movement and direction to the design aesthetic. When used in clean, modern designs, the lighting fixtures become focal points themselves like a piece of artwork. They also make excellent conversation pieces.”

MID-CENTURY MADNESS

PALM SPRINGS REMAINS THE PLACE FOR STAR-STUDDED MID-CENTURY ARCHITECTURE AND ALL THINGS MOD. By ELLEN PARIS

MARY MACS
THE REAR POOLSIDE OF THE MAIN HOUSE AT SUNNYLANDS

Located about 120 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the mid-century movement from architecture to furniture to clothing to cocktail lounges revived Palm Springs from a tired desert town to one of the coolest international destinations in the US. Many of the iconic mid-century and modernist architects including Albert Frey, Richard Neutra, E. Stewart Williams, John Lautner, William Krisel, A. Quincy Jones, Donald Wexler, Richard Harrison, John Porter Clark and William Cody left an indelible and timeless stamp on this desert oasis.

TWENTY PLUS YEARS OF MID-CENTURY MADNESS

SPREAD;

The kick-off began as it often does in the real estate market. Starting around 2000, a plethora of mid-century homes, many in need of TLC and updating, started gaining traction with attention from buyers attracted to the timeless aesthetic architecture that defines the desert indoor-outdoor lifestyle. These buyers were ready to reimagine these homes, many built from the late-’50s through the mid-’60s. THIS

“MAD MEN” HELPED THE MID-CENTURY RENAISSANCE

Paul Kaplan, Founder/CEO of the Paul Kaplan Group, started his real estate brokerage in 2000 with over 30 agents today and is now a part of Bennion Deville Homes. Kaplan holds a degree in architecture and has long been known as one of the go-to real estate agents for mid-century homes in Palm Springs. He’s been working with buyers and sellers of mid-century homes for over two decades. “What helped the mid-century renaissance was when the television show “Mad Men” became such a hit. At that time Palm Springs took off with the appeal and appreciation of mid-century architecture,” Kaplan recalls. “Homes were still cheap enough to buy, renovate, and then flip them. They have been continually in-demand since then with prices continuing to escalate through the roof.”

AN ICONIC INDOOR-OUTDOOR

PALM SPRINGS LIFESTYLE

These iconic homes were defined by simple clean lines with open floor plans, expansive walls of glass often boasting reachout-and-touch mountain views, and signature clerestory windows allowing abundant natural light to fill these spaces. The concept of indoor-outdoor living held wide appeal with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors opening to backyards, patios, and the ultimate Palm Springs accessory: the swimming pool. From breakfast on the patio to poolside sunset cocktails mid-century architecture was perfect for the next generation to fall in love with Palm Springs.

STAY UNTIL MAY

The most popular of these homes with over 2,200 built around the Palm Springs area were “Alexanders” built by The Alexander Construction Company owned by George Alexander and his son, Robert. The Alexanders forged a relationship with architect William Krisel of Palmer and Krisel, who designed many of the Alexanders. Their strategy was simple: to build second homes for Southern California buyers to “Stay until May” as the advertising copy went. These homes ranged from 1,300 square feet and up and were originally priced well under $20,000. The best examples of perfectly restored Alexanders can be found in the neighborhoods of Vista Las Palmas, Twin Palms, and Racquet Club Estates. Today, Alexanders can fetch well above $2 million in Vista Las Palmas, a much-in-demand neighborhood nestled between the mountains and downtown Palm Springs. Not a bad return on investment. Elvis Presley and Priscilla spent their Palm Springs honeymoon in an Alexander.

MODERNISM SHOW BOOSTS INTEREST

“About the same time the interest in mid-century homes happened, the Modernism Show started, which brought people from all over and added so much exposure for these homes. In the beginning, they did free home tours,” recalls. Modernism Week will be held from February 16-23, 2023 and offers a variety of beyond-interesting home tours today at a cost. Reservations for events often sell out far in advance.

MODERNISM WEEK

(FEBRUARY 16-26, 2023)

Modernism Week, now held twice a year, in October and February, “provides a unique opportunity for people to experience the midcentury modern culture,” says Lisa Vossler Smith, CEO, Modernism Week. “Our participants have the opportunity to attend swanky parties in architecturally significant mid-century modern homes, tour neighborhoods and individual residences that are rarely open to the public and attend compelling cultural events including a wide array of talks and presentations by midcentury modern experts. We are delighted to see that the interest in modernism continues to grow, especially among a younger audience that is increasingly passionate about modern design,” Vossler Smith adds.

Here are events that are perennial favorites:

INSITE

“At a dinner party, one of my friends served caviar with Ruffles. It was so wrong that it was right!”

THIS IS NOT YOUR PARENTS’

CAVIAR

CHEFS EVERYWHERE ARE BRINGING FISH EGGS BACK TO BASICS — TAKING IT FROM THE TASTING STAND TO THE BAR TOP.

AIARt San Francisco’s Palette, Chef Peter Hemsley turned the idea of the traditional hard-boiled egg accompaniment for caviar by placing a large dollop of white sturgeon eggs on top of smoked sturgeon cream using an edible clay eggshell as the serving vessel.

“Most people, if not inclined to luxury food, shy away from caviar as a category,” he says. “By presenting this caviar experience in a singular bite (at the start of the meal), we are asking the guest to take a culinary leap of faith with us — an icebreaker — and sets the stage for the rest of what’s to come.”

It’s clear caviar is having a moment. Chefs across the country are keeping the prized fish eggs as part of luxury experiences, but adding it into more approachable dishes as a way of introducing the product to new generations while educating them about why caviar can be more than just a taster on a blini.

For example, at the recently-opened RPM Italian at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the culinary team paired Kaluga Queen Caviar with fresh burrata. While the generous portion atop a pillowy white poof of dairy remains elegant, it’s certainly a far cry from traditional service, representing a bridge to help new taste buds understand the complexity of the delicacy.

“CAVIAR IS A FOOD THAT SHOULD BE ENJOYED, ANY WAY PEOPLE WISH”KACHKA CHEF BONNIE MORALES
PALETTE EGG DISH

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS, TOO

Ensuring there’s a future market for caviar means educating eaters about harvesting caviar and how to support responsible farmers for a better-tasting — and less impactful — product.

The complex and highly-competitive culinary scene in Portland, Oregon has proven to be quite the ground for pushing the boundaries in sustainable caviar as well.

Chef John Conlin uses caviar in a number of ways at his tasting-menu only restaurant Tercet, specifically using Tsar Nicoulai caviar from northern California — arguably America’s most sustainable caviar producer. It follows Conlin’s commitment to use responsibly-harvested products across his offerings, allowing

guests to taste the difference.

While Conlin’s menu changes weekly based on what’s locally available (and extremely fresh), he starts each meal with oysters topped with a bit of caviar.

Interestingly, he says it’s more “for texture, not necessarily flavor.”

At Russian restaurant Kachka in Portland, Oregon, Co-Owner and Chef Bonnie Morales believes in caviar as a food that should be enjoyed “any way people wish,” even putting it on the happy hour menu as the “chips and dip” option. She’ll even spread it on top of challah bread with just a bit of cultured butter.

“I grew up eating caviar at both celebrations and in more casual gatherings at home, so I take that approach in my restaurant,” she adds.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

Then, there are the chefs adding caviar to seemingly simple bites, elevating the food to an entirely new level.

Back in San Francisco, the first Russian restaurant in America ever to be listed on a Michelin Guide, Birch & Rye, uses caviar as a finisher for dessert.

The meal ends with rye donuts, caramel and Siberian sturgeon caviar. It’s a new, decadent take on sweet-and-salty that’s certainly a rare treat among tasting menus anywhere in the country. (The restaurant even extends this to the drink menu via a caviar-infused vodka.)

As chefs continue to push the limit, caviar will only be opened to those curious about what makes this storied ingredient such a sought-after addition to meals everywhere.

AN ENCHANTING NAPLES RESPITE BLENDS THE PAST AND THE PRESENT.

I In Living Color

t’s both a blessing and a curse, the constant flow of concepting and implementing designs. On one hand, it keeps business going strong, but there is little reprieve from the nonstop flurry of ideas. That’s why Wilfredo Emanuel’s home serves as both a blockade from the outside world and place for quiet reflection.

It’s no wonder that there was a time when Emanuel preferred an expanse of white space in his home, where he could effectively turn off those creative juices and be surrounded by the soothing nothingness. But as he evolved as an artist, life began to mirror art. And today, Emanuel’s home décor is a reflection of the designs he loves, paying homage to a life well-lived.

Often asked about his own favorite space, design influences, and meaningful items in his home, Emanuel says it’s a question he has often challenged himself to answer.

“As a designer, you get to a point in your professional life where you can see your past immaturity, and for me, it was those years of that white canvas in my home,” says Emanuel. “I loved it, but still discovering who I was and what I could bring to the table.”

Determined to succeed and be inspirational to others, Emanuel grew into his own space. Eventually he began applying the same principles to his home that he brings to his clients.

“The home reflects where you are going, what you are doing, and today I am a deeper person than I was before, and my home has changed along with me,” says Emanuel, who was influenced by the architectural style of the house. “Our style is a midcentury and contemporary vibe.”

Emanuel chose to make changes that didn’t require permits. It was a wise choice, since, as he says, a designer is his own worst client.

“I remember when we were making changes to the house, thinking, ‘What if I paint a trending color for this year and next year it’s not trending?,” Emanuel chuckles. “So, we went with classic and timeless.”

There are perhaps no two better words to describe the home he shares with partner and beauty guru Gary Harlan of N.color Salon. Both Emanuel and Harlan are leading men in every sense of the term, fashionable with the confidence and poise of classic film stars, true gentlemen. Making their different tastes work under the same roof was no simple feat, but Emanuel and Harlan can agree on the most important component of a well-loved home: their canine companions.

“Our dogs Ella and Hermes are our family, so they are very important and in those times when you need to relax, there is nothing more beautiful,”
—WILFREDO EMANUEL

“Our dogs Ella and Hermes are our family, so they are very important and in those times when you need to relax, there is nothing more beautiful,” says Emanuel. “Every night we unwind over a bite to eat and some television with our dogs in our laps before bed, and that’s how we regenerate for work the next day.”

Emanuel treasures such precious moments. Fridays also are especially fulfilling, when Ella and Hermes have both of their parents all to themselves.

“The doggies know on Friday that it’s the weekend, so they’ll jump up and down with excitement, knowing they will have us for 24 hours and we will do everything all together,” says Emanuel. “Being in our home with my partner and doggies,

having those silent moments are very special.”

Most of the artwork in the home is courtesy of Gary’s expert eye, but there is one area of the home that is distinctly Wilfredo Emanuel: his closet. Though he and Harlan are known for their wardrobes, the one area Emanuel designed solely to his own tastes houses his fashion secrets.

It wouldn’t be home to Naples’ own go-to tabletop designer without a beautiful, ageless wood table, which Emanuel decorates for Valentine’s Day, Christmas and an array of holidays, using that as his showcase.

The exterior of Emanuel and Harlan’s home is where they love to pass the time. The stunning outdoor space is very manicured and sophisticated, with a Beverly Hills feel in the black and white striped awnings. Everywhere in and around the house Emanuel has created artful vignettes, just as he is famous for doing for his clients. In each room, each scene has a beginning, middle and end—all tiny productions that tell the tale of its inhabitants.

“A house can tell a story in a thousand beautiful moments, unique to its owner and in my case, I really enjoy being at home,” says Emanuel.

OVER-THE-TOP TABLES

Designing your own stunning tablescape the WE way is like telling a story, one place setting at a time. By KELLY GRAY

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the table is the heartbeat. It’s where we welcome beloved dinner guests, where fellowship and family discussions take place, where we gather for important events. As such, it deserves to be a place of celebration.

Decorating a tabletop the WE way tells the story of the occasion. A beautifully dressed table can include stunning place settings, candlelight reflecting off flatware, casting shards of light through crystal

goblets and dazzling centerpieces. Or it could be a simple, thoughtfully arranged platter with a few treasured serving pieces. Most of all, as Wilfredo Emanuel says, a decorated table should include what is meaningful to you.

“For me, designing a beautiful table is about expressing who you are and going with what you feel, not with what’s trendy,” says Emanuel.

Early in his design career, Emanuel’s clients discovered his special gift of

“TABLE WARS”

As one of eight finalists from more than 1,700 tablescapers who auditioned, designer Wilfredo Emanuel, not a tablescaper by trade, rose to the semi finals of HGTV’s “Table Wars,” which aired last winter on Discovery Plus. Emanuel’s tablescaping services have also been showcased at various philanthropic events, such as the Naples Zoo Gala and The League Club’s Naples Tables, a design extravaganza raising funds for the organization’s grantmaking program.

designing individual tables, and they began relying upon him to ready their homes for the holidays. From Versace china to family heirlooms, over time, the word got out in the philanthropic community to red carpet organizers and gala event hosts: a Wilfredo Emanuel holiday table was the table.

“Tablescaping added another layer to my professional career as a designer, to decorate a table where people share each other, share a meal, and inviting family and friends to join them in celebration,” says Emanuel. “I love being part of that process.”

Later, Martha Stewart came calling with an invitation for

Emanuel to participate on the Discovery / HGTV television series, “Table Wars,” judged by Stewart, with Tamera Mowry-Housley and Chris Hessney. Emanuel’s unofficial title as tablescape maestro firmly cemented in television history; he has become the recognized expert in over-the-top table design and décor.

“After the television show with Martha Stewart, it’s amazing how every time I go into a place and see a table, I imagine how I will decorate it,” says Emanuel. “This is especially true during the holidays, a time when I love to invite everyone to be at the table with me, saying ‘Merry Christmas,’ and see you in the spring!”

How to Create the Perfect Festive Table

With the right inspiration, you can create a meaningful holiday table in your own home.

STEP 1 Begin from the center and work your way to the outside of the table. Look around your home and find things that represent whichever holiday you’re celebrating. It can be an item that’s color specific to that holiday, or something you love, such as a beautiful book. This is where the story of your holiday table begins.

STEP 2 Bring your collection of holiday décor to this element and build from there. Add ribbons of color and found items that celebrate the season.

STEP 3 Your main theme will live on the table runner, helping continue the story of your table. Holiday tables are not just about décor, they are about the guests the host has invited to share that space, so let that be your driving factor as you decorate.

STEP 4 Focus on the center. Begin mixing and matching the items you’ve chosen to decorate your table, starting from the top and down the sides of the centerpiece, so everyone who has a seat can enjoy the scenery.

STEP 5 Create illusion with lights and layers, continuing to mix and match meaningful items. There is an unbalanced balance of a decorated table. Designing a table is like being a magician, creating height and depth.

STEP 6 Every place setting should tell its own story, with a beginning, middle and end. Choose elements that carry the theme of your centerpiece. The layering, mixing and matching will allow guests to be part of the journey as they discover each tiny detail. Once the table is set, the ooohs and ahhhs is your reward. Now take a breath, have a seat, and enjoy the meal, together.

Philip Guston Now charts the 50-year career of one of America’s most influential modern artists through more than 150 paintings and drawings. Guston’s story is one of epic change — of artistic styles, from muralism to abstract expressionism to figuration, of degrees of political and social involvement, and of levels of personal confession in his work. Renowned in his time and in ours, Guston’s work continues to resonate, attract and provoke, raising crucial questions about the relationship of art to beauty and brutality, freedom and doubt, politics and the imagination. Q + A

WITH COURTNEY HANSEN

WE ASKED EXECUTIVE producer, TV personality, mom, author, philanthropist and host Courtney Hansen, who is currently producing “Ride of Your Life with Courtney Hansen”— a custom car restoration show on Motortrend TV which surprises deserving individuals and families with the custom car of their dreams — about life, love and inspiration.

Your idea of perfect happiness… being content in each moment and peaceful in your mind and soul. Happiness for me is also tied to my family and close friends.

The trait you most deplore in yourself… OCD. I work on it daily. I’m the type of person who has to check if the door is locked 25 times, the candles are burned out 12 times and I’ll go back to the house after I leave to make sure I unplugged the curling iron or turned off the stove.

What you deplore in others anybody who is unkind.

Your current state of mind is…in a million places because I’m juggling my television series and editing these last episodes. I’m also a mom of an eight year old who has her

school and daily activities which are violin, piano, tennis, soccer and soccer and soccer. And then I have a husband …

Your greatest extravagance… buying fine jewelry from Marissa Collections. Getting frequent blowouts is another one.

The quality that you like most in a man... kindness, 100 percent. I love a kind man and have never been into the bad boy thing.

The quality you like most in a woman… confidence and a woman who supports other women.

The phrase you most over-use… according to my daughter, “only boring people get bored.” She’s in that phase of saying “I’m bored, I’m bored.”

Your favorite writer of all time… C.S. Lewis

Your favorite hero of fiction…Wonder Woman, Duh! For sure, Wonder Woman.

Your biggest regret is… that I stopped playing piano. Because I used to be able

to play and I hate that I ever stopped.

Your most treasured possession… my 1957 Thunderbird. It was the first classic car I ever bought and it’s not even the most expensive or valuable car, but it has so much special meaning in my life.

Your favorite occupation is… mine, I love what I do! I love being able to interview people and get to learn about them through my craft. I love to work in television and hopefully be able to make people laugh, smile or cry in a good way. And bring them an escape from daily life. And I love working on cars.

If you could choose how to die… Oh gosh, that’s a weird one. My friend Linda Vaughn, who is the queen of motorsports, once said that if she had to pick a way to die she would love to be standing in the pits on a race track and get blown down by Mario Andretti going 200 mph. I thought that was funny, but that’s not my quote.

Your motto… be kind, work hard, enjoy the ride.

THE ROLEX COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA

Originally designed to meet the needs of professional race car drivers, the Cosmograph Daytona pays tribute to a place – Daytona, Florida –where the legendary watch has become the instrument of choice. With its origins in outer space, the material which adorns the dial – metallic meteorite – comes from an asteroid that exploded millions of years ago, creating unique, distinctive crystallization within the material that is impossible to recreate on Earth. Like those who wear it, this Rolex remains in a class of its own. (bighamjewelers.com)

“I love this watch for many different reasons,” says Wilfredo Emanuel. “First and foremost, it was given to me by my lovely partner, so it is very sentimental to me. I also love the aesthetic of this watch. It is a beautiful piece that goes with everything, both formal and informal outfits. It makes me feel distinguished when I wear it. This gorgeous watch is well-made, stylish, and sophisticated.”
