Pilgrim Lutheran Offers Discounted Tuition for Kindergarteners Pilgrim Lutheran School will be offering half off the regular tuition for all kindergarteners, a savings of more than $2,000. With scholarships available, the cost could be reduced even more. More than 500 students have graduated from Pilgrim’s kindergarten program, having benefited from small classroom sizes offering more one on one attention. Because of the increased emphasis on the language arts, blocks of time throughout the day have been designated to guided reading, reading groups and reading aloud. Besides the language arts, there are also times designated specifically to math, social studies, science, handwriting and Bible study. To further enhance learning opportunities, kindergartners spend Monday and Friday afternoon with the first- and second-grade classroom. Pilgrim Lutheran School

Mountain View Has a Rockin’ Graduation Party By Lecia Crider
The 2013 graduating seniors at Mountain View didn’t need to worry about where to go or what to do to have fun after the May 23 graduation ceremonies. Following a longstanding tradition, dedicated parent volunteers put together “2013 Rock-N-Bowl,” an all night graduation party held at Brunswick Zone in Mesa. In addition to the requisite cosmic bowling, graduating seniors were treated to all the food they could eat, free arcade game tokens, dancing to the tunes of local band Amsterdam Time Machine and dress-up photos. The highlight of the evening for many seniors, though, was the ongoing raffle. More than 90 prizes were given away, including an iPad donated by Perkinson Properties, a flat screen TV donated by Automated Environments, and the grand prize

of a laptop donated by Farnsworth Wholesale. Graduating senior Corinn Eddington commented, “It was nice to be in a fun place with so many of my friends and all our favorites like Ned’s Krazy Sub and Jamba Juice.” Students appreciated the fun, and parents appreciated the safety. This annual, parentsponsored event is always an alcohol-free party, and once a student leaves the party they are not allowed back in. These rules keep the atmosphere safe and fun and gave seniors an option they might not otherwise have. The volunteer committee would like to thank everyone who donated to the party, including local businesses and Mountain View families. Those who are interested in helping out next year can contact Teresa Yetter at (480) 250-9252.

Another 12-year-old skateboarder, Alana Smith also made an incredible showing at X Games. She received a silver medal in the “Women’s Skateboard Park” event. She also credits her mother with getting her started in skateboarding. “I saw it on TV and I kept begging my parents and my mom finally got me a skateboard…and my dad didn’t even know about it,” mused Alana, who has been training with Kids That Rip! for five years. In addition to her medal win at X Games, Smith was also inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for her achievement of becoming the youngest person to medal at the games. Although she travels quite a bit for skateboarding competitions, she anticipates that she will be able to juggle skateboarding and the increased demands of junior high schooling when she goes to Fremont Junior High this fall. With 40,000 square feet of indoor, air-conditioned fun, Kids That Rip! offers skateboard and scooter instruction for ages 3 and older. There is also time to register for the last several weeks of summer camp (ages 5-15), take a free introductory class or enjoy skateboarding during open session. Visit www.kidsthatrip.com or call (480) 844-9600 for additional information. Kids That Rip! is located at 1927 N. Gilbert Road (at McKellips) at Desert Devil Gymnastics.

Valerie Kaff, 2012-13 Mountain View High School senior, has been named the Gatorade Arizona Softball Player of the Year, according to USA Today. The award recognizes athletic excellence, outstanding academic achievement and exemplary character—including volunteerism, sportsmanship and leadership—on and off the field. Kaff is the first Gatorade Arizona Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Mountain View. “Val is a phenomenal talent and team player,” said Joe Goodman, Mountain View’s head softball coach. “What makes Val so special is that she is a phenomenal talent, but her priorities all season have been about the team and about winning games. Added assistant coaches Giles Mead and David Tellef, “She never allowed her personal ambitions to supersede what we were trying to accomplish as a unit.”
The 5-foot-7 right-handed pitcher posted a 27-7 record in the circle along with a 0.84 earned-run average this past season, leading the Toros (27-8) to the Division I state tournament loser’s bracket final. Kaff struck out 431 batters and walked just 65 in 216.2 innings pitched to go with 16 shutouts and two no-hitters. At the plate, Kaff batted .310 with two home runs, 18 runs batted in and a .406 onbase percentage. Kaff maintained a 3.65 grade-point average. She volunteered at a homeless shelter, a food bank and the Salvation Army. She also spent her free time as a youth coach and umpire. “It’s a great honor to win for Mountain View,” Kaff said. “To be the first to win this award for Mountain View softball and to represent them for the last time is special.”
Kaff automatically becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year Award, which was not announced by press time. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball on an athletic scholarship at Michigan State University this fall. For 28 years, The Gatorade Company and USA Today High School Sports have honored the nation’s best high school athletes in football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and track and field. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade High School Sports Leadership Team in partnership with USA Today, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of veteran prep-sports journalists.

Caring for a Special Needs Child By Tracy House The children are outside swimming and Kim Hansen can share a few minutes of her time. The older children are looking after their younger siblings and it’s quiet in the house that is usually bustling with activity. Hansen sits at her kitchen table, hands crossed in front of her, the raucous squeals of laughter muffled from outside. Hansen’s four biological daughters are on their own, married and starting families, but at home are her nine adopted children, all of whom were drug exposed before coming to live with her. The children have varying degrees of learning disabilities, from minor delays to profound disabilities. Of her nine adopted children, Andrew, who is now 14 years old and going into eighth grade, is the
one Hansen calls her special needs child. “The day to day with him is significant,” she said closing her eyes remembering. She tries to not get teary-eyed every time she talks about his journey. Andrew was 1-week-old when he came to Hansen. She adopted him at 8 months old. Hansen said Andrew was a completely typical baby up until he was 4 years old when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on the brain stem called a medulloblastoma, which is related to the drug exposure in utero shortly after conception. Three days after the diagnosis Andrew had surgery. The cancer was on the brain stem and could not be completely removed. As a result, Andrew became disabled.

Back to School Know-How: 5 Tips to Save on School Supplies pasta vixen
mom cents
It may feel a bit early, but the truth is that now is the perfect time to start scouting out the back-to-school deals to find what you need so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Here are a few tips to help you save on school supplies. 1. Find out what you can reuse before you start shopping. Backpacks, calculators, rulers, scissors and binders are all items that can last more than one year. 2. Start shopping now for basics. If you don’t already have your school supply list, stock up on the basics (pencils, paper, notebooks, etc.) and wait until you know exactly what you need for all the extras. Insider tip: Not sure you want to visit a bunch of different stores? You can price match the sales at Walmart. Items that are often available to photo page

price match include name-brand items like Sharpie, Crayola, Bic pens and Elmer’s glue. 3. Buy plain and personalize. The simple undecorated school supplies cost less and they are just as effective. You may even find that the store brand is cheaper. But to kids, they may not be as fun, so let them personalize their supplies with stickers, labels and colorful doodles. 4. Take advantage of reward programs. Office supply stores often offer “free after rebate” or “free after rewards” items. By
understanding how each of these programs works, you can pick up name-brand school supplies like pens, paper, highlighters, Sharpies, etc. for just a few pennies after rewards. The drug stores also have reward programs with free or cheap items each week during the backto-school season, so make sure you are checking those ads, too. 5. Shop the loss leaders. Each week the office supply stores and national retailers like Target and Kmart offer school supply loss leaders. These are the penny, 10-cent and “free after rebate” items that help drive traffic to the stores. Try hitting up each of the office supply stores each week and only buying these loss leaders. Come back next month for tips to save on back to school clothes!

buttons of his iPad, his communication device, and hopefully one day type on a keyboard to communicate. His speech therapists help him navigate on his communication device with spelling and typing, to communicate better. Andrew is learning American Sign Language but has difficulty using signs and needs somebody who knows him to interpret. “My goal, my hope is that one day he’ll be able to actually spell words, and even if he could finger point, even if it takes him half an hour for a greeting, that would be such an accomplishment,” Hansen said, taking a deep breath to hold back the tears. They’ve come a long way, Hansen said, but are probably as far as they are going to be able to go with Andrew. For a long time she tried to do it all herself but realized through this lifechanging event she needed to let others help. “It’s very hard to release that responsibility, especially to someone
else,” she said. “As he got a little bit older, for those first several years we always thought he would improve and this would just be a short-term situation and I was always completely and totally hands-on working to get to that point. And then we started crossing that bridge of this might be as good as it gets, as close to back to normal as we’re going to see.” If Hansen has any advice for other mothers who are facing a significant situation, it’s to find somebody who has worked through the system and to connect with someone who can help figure things out. She also mentioned finding good help—respite and habilitation workers, friends or families—you are comfortable with because you do need a break. Hansen doesn’t rest until Andrew is tucked safely in bed each night. “It is 24/7 truly,” she said.

Decide What You Will Do—And Follow Through I think one of the most satisfying moments in a parenting class is when a parent sits up a little straighter, their eyebrows go up and I can almost see the light bulb flash over their head as they muse, “So in order to get my child to change his behavior, I have to change mine.” It is in this moment of awareness that the parent begins to see himself as teacher and role model, rather than friend, behavior monitor or punisher. We need to be always asking, “What am I teaching?” If my child is crying for treats at the grocery store and I buy her one because I’m embarrassed and want her to be quiet, what am I teaching her? And if she cries for treats the next time, how can I be irritated when I’m the one who taught her how pasta vixen

to get a treat? If my child demands that I make him a sandwich and I do it while lecturing about how he needs to speak more respectfully, what am I teaching? Should I be surprised when he is disrespectful to others, when I’m the one who taught him that it’s ok to be disrespectful? Jane Nelsen, author of many positive discipline books, advises parents to “decide what you will do, and follow through.” This reminds me that I need to be proactive and prepared to act so that I set my child up for success. I need to decide whether I am willing to shop through the crying and ignore my embarrassment, or leave the store and sit in the car until the crying stops and then try again, or bring along a snack so if my child really is hungry
she has something to eat. Any of these strategies will teach my child that we don’t get treats every time we go to the store. If I am kind and firm and follow through, my behavior will gradually elicit the behavior I want from my child. If my child demands that I do something, I don’t need to get angry or punish or lecture. He won’t hear me, anyway. But I can kindly and firmly say, “I will be happy to help you when you ask respectfully.” And stick to that commitment. My child will quickly learn that politeness is required. Following through with our own
behavior is hard work, especially when we’re tired or stressed. And just as our kids master one good habit, it’s time to teach them another. I have met many parents who exclaim, “Nobody ever told me it was going to be this hard!” Being a teacher-parent is hard, but what an amazing job we have: the opportunity to mold and shape another human being! When we follow through, we turn on our light bulb so our children can turn on theirs. Eva Dwight is a parent and family coach and a positive discipline educator. Trinity Christian School A Genuine Educational Alternative Educational choices made for a child are some of the most valuable decisions parents can make. Trinity Christian School is a nondenominational, private Christian school that offers something different. Founded by the late Rev. C. Truman Davis, the school’s direction is now under the direction of Headmistress Jean E. Davis with Principal Janet Mattausch and Office Manager Tina Drappo. Trinity Christian sits in a serene desert setting, north of Ellsworth and McKellips roads. Each morning, the school day starts with a half hour chapel service. “Anyone is welcome to attend,” stated Vice President of the Board Don Gaylord. The service includes prayers, hymns, readings from Scripture by the older male students and lessons read by volunteer chaplains. on the town

The school is for children in kindergarten through sixth grade and the teacher to student ratio is a stellar 1:12. During the school day, students partake in phonetic reading, traditional math and Bible instruction along with literature, geography, history and science. Throughout the week, they also do physical education, music and art, with the younger students taking Spanish classes and the older students taking Latin. Each year Trinity Christian students win many awards for their art in the Arizona State Fair competition and they also exhibit at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. The students at the school thrive in an environment that is very focused. “They just love the fact that we have small classes and they like the structure,” Drappo said. events calendar

Happy Independence Day The 4th of July is one of the most important holidays that is observed in the United States. This day has more historical significance than any other day celebrated by this great country. However, if you ask children what the day means, they usually respond that July 4th is all about fireworks and barbecues. Children as well as adults should use the 4th of July celebration to learn the history and significance of the reasons why we celebrate this holiday. Americans need to know what the colors red, white and blue mean to us as free citizens. We also need to teach our kids that those beautifully executed fireworks represent the bloodshed and sacrifice of heroes on the battlefield. The basis for the 4th of July celebration is the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by our founding fathers. This Declaration of Independence made America a free nation. We celebrate this holiday with fireworks, parades and picnics. It is important to enjoy these festivities with family and friends but it is equally important to teach children what this day really means. You can create delicious red, white and blue themed deserts for your 4th of July celebration while you provide information and historical facts that can help young children learn about our flag and the reasons behind the 4th of July celebration. Parents and educators alike can teach facts concerning the intriguing history of these United States in a scrumptious, delicious way. One interesting fact that can be discussed is that the Continental Congress of the new United States did not adopt the specific resolution to create a flag until June 14, 1777. The resolution stated: “...that the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red biz spotlight

and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” The red, white and blue colors used in decorations for the 4th of July celebrations are not coincidental but have significant meaning on the American flag. Currently, there are 50 stars on the flag. Alaska and Hawaii represent the last two states to join the Union. It is important to note that the original flag had only 13 stars that represented the 13 original colonies. The white stripes also represent the original 13 colonies. White represents purity of intention. The originators of the Declaration of Independence were pure of heart and intended to free the nation from the tyranny of King George III. The white on the flag signifies purity and innocence. The red represents the shed blood of the patriots and also hardiness and courage. The blue stands for the perseverance, vigilance and the seeking of justice. Many signers were vigilant in their pursuit of justice and freedom for the masses. Those brave souls who lived and died for our freedom. When you weave the color together, you get the red, white and blue American Flag, the ultimate symbol of equality and freedom. Your Behavioral Bias and The Investment Performance Gap Listen up my friends—especially those of you with advanced education degrees—and I will share with you the secret of successful investing right here in The Groves Report! One of the most successful investors of our generation, Warren Buffet, said this: “Success in investing doesn’t correlate with an I.Q. above 25. Once you have ordinary intelligence, what you need is the temperament to control the urges that get other people into trouble in investing.” The “urges” that he is referring to are known as behavioral biases to psychologists and behavioral economists. All of us exhibit one or more behavioral biases that contribute to our tendency to repeatedly make irrational investment decisions throughout our lives. Four of the more important biases are listed at right. recipe corner

Investment Impact
Overconfidence
Attributing more of our skill to the situation than is warranted.
More frequent trading = higher costs.
Loss Aversion
We derive more pain from a loss than we do happiness from an equal sized gain. It’s been shown that investors should be risk averse, but they are usually loss averse. There is a difference between these two.
Holding losing investments/holding too much cash. But then taking unwarranted risks.
Herding
A natural desire to conform socially.
Investing in bubbles.
Familiarity
Finding comfort in things that we are more familiar with.
Lack of diversification.

We know from countless studies that our behavioral biases have a devastating impact on our long-term investment performance in our 401(k) and taxable accounts. The research firm Dalbar conducted the most comprehensive study of its kind by comparing the performance of the average equity investor against the time weighted
return of the S&P 500, net of fees, over a 20-year period. Since Dalbar published its first results nearly a decade ago, and updating the study each year since, the average American equity investor has consistently underperformed the S&P 500 by an average of 4 percent to 5 percent per year. The study’s results through 2012 show that during the last

20 years the S&P 500 has generated an 8.21 percent annualized return while the average equity investor has only managed a 4.25 percent annualized return during this time period. This 3.96 percent performance differential is referred to by behavioral economists as the “Behavior Gap.” In addition, Morningstar has found that investors underperform the very fund(s) that they are invested in. Dalbar and Morningstar conclude that investors’ behavior and their decisions of when to purchase and sell securities cause such underperformance. The keys for every investor to close the “Behavior Gap” and boost your long-term returns by as much as 4 percent to 5 percent per year in your investment portfolio are three fold: 1) Recognize that as a human being, no matter your level of education, you are behaviorally preprogrammed to buy high and sell low. 2) Stop trying to beat the market. Trust me, you can’t do it. Invest passively through index and asset class funds that charge minimal fees and consistently outperform their actively managed mutual fund counterparts. 3) Don’t do it yourself! Work with a fee-only, fiduciary adviser who is not a product salesman. They will not only help you “structure” your investment portfolio to maximize your returns over your investment time horizon, but most importantly, they will prevent you from making the wrong investment decision at the wrong time for the wrong reason. Precision Mixed Martial Arts Martial Arts for Fitness, Fun and Self-Defense Mention Mixed Martial Arts and you might think of highly trained fighters sparring on the mat. While you certainly wouldn’t be wrong, there is much more to Mixed Martial Arts than meets the eye. It is a fantastic way to stay in shape, work on personal development skills and to learn self-defense skills at any age. Since 2001, Precision Mixed Martial Arts has been helping all age groups with valuable skills that can be used throughout life. With more than 26 years experience, Head Instructor Master Adam Gilbart has extensive training in MMA, Krav Maga, Kali, Muay Thai Kickboxing and has black belts in American Jiu Jitsu and Tang Soo do Moo Duk Kwan. “We start them at age 3 and take all the way up to adults,” said Gilbart. In addition to Sport Karate (a hybrid of Kenpo and Taekwondo), other skills people will learn are assertiveness, ageappropriate self defense and how to fight back effectively when there is danger. Another instructor also teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. “Our classes are filled with excitement yet focused on developing the inner qualities of a champion,” noted Gilbart. Classes instill a sense of accomplishment, respect for one’s self and others, self-confidence and increased physical and mental capabilities. Instructors take on a high level of interaction with students to ensure that no one is left out and is getting proper instruction at all times. They also help to ensure that kids master their martial arts skills at a level that instills confidence. At higher levels of some of the classes, there are tournaments and competitions in which students can compete, if they choose. In addition to birthday parties and summer camp, Precision MMA offers on the town

the Kid Safe Workshop and the Bully Proof Workshop. During the year, there is also the TASK (Transport After School Kids) pick-up program where participants can be picked up after school and brought back to Precision MMA for martial arts class, snack and homework. It’s a great value because it incorporates homework, karate class and a safe after-school environment. “We have a fully wrapped van and we pick up kids at their individual school,” explained Gilbart. Child pick-up time at Precision MMA is 6 p.m. A variety of payment plans are available to parents for the TASK program for added convenience. Kids are not the only ones who benefit from various forms of martial arts. “Most parents come for the fitness aspect of the classes and what sets us apart from the gym is that in addition to the fitness, you’re actually learning something and having fun doing it,” Gilbart explained. He also noted the staff will assist with fitness goals and motivation to help ensure steady progress. For adults, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts and SelfDefense Workshops offer different levels of skill development. Precision Mixed Martial Arts is located at 1908 E McKellips Rd., Suite 101 (at Gilbert Road). Birth Father’s Rights and Obligations in Adoption Pending before the U.S. Supreme Court is a case nicknamed after a young girl that two families are fighting for. “Baby Jessica” lived with her adoptive parents for two years before they suddenly lost custody. The biological father, despite having signed away his parental rights prior to the adoption, gained custody of a child he’d never met due to a federal law offering special considerations for cases involving children of Native Americans. The biological mother is now inadvertently excluded from the daughter she thought she sent to a better life. Although uncommon, this case highlights how dangerous adoption proceedings can be. State law is no different. Arizona law attempts to balance the rights of mothers, fathers and the adoptive parents. Arizona adoption laws are highly technical, however, and the slightest mistakes can result in an irreversible and unintended outcome. For example, in anticipation of an adoption, biological fathers are often sent a “notice of potential birth father” from birth mothers or their attorneys. This can be as simple as a single page, can be mailed to father as young as 15 years
old, and is effective even without his parents knowing. Failure to timely respond within 30 days can result in the permanent and irreversible exclusion of that father from the adoption proceeding. This result is extremely harsh, because it bars a father from objecting to the adoption—even months before the birth occurs. Fathers have an obligation to respond within 30 days and must take additional steps if they object to the adoption. Filing a paternity action is one such step, and can be done before the birth of the child. Registering with the putative father registry is another, but likewise has a short timeframe. In other words, don’t wait to consult an attorney until it is too late. Adoption proceedings are extremely emotional for all parties involved. Adoptive parents need to have finality and assurance that their adoption was handled correctly. Both biological parents and birth parents need to assert their rights to avoid unintended consequences. If you or a loved one have any questions regarding paternity or adoptions in Arizona, contact Rowley, Chapman & Barney.
